Welcome to the programme. Tonight's headlines: | :00:00. | :00:00.
Brexit campaigners celebrate as Wales votes | :00:00. | :00:07.
We'll look what it could mean for our economy, our government | :00:08. | :00:11.
and the effect it could have on all our lives. | :00:12. | :00:15.
And there's no talk of leaving Euro 2016 in Paris. | :00:16. | :00:18.
Wales' footballers are aiming for a place in the quarter finals. | :00:19. | :00:36.
Wales, along with the UK as a whole, has voted to leave | :00:37. | :00:41.
The result has been welcomed by Leave campaigners describing it | :00:42. | :00:46.
But First Minister Carwyn Jones says he fears there'll be | :00:47. | :00:49.
consequences for jobs, and can't see anything positive | :00:50. | :00:51.
Just over 52% of voters in Wales backed Leave, compared | :00:52. | :00:58.
Out of the 22 Welsh council areas a total of 17 voted to leave the EU. | :00:59. | :01:05.
Five local authorities voted for Remain - | :01:06. | :01:07.
Cardiff, Ceredigion, Monmouthshire, the Vale of Glamorgan and Gwynedd. | :01:08. | :01:11.
Turnout was high in Wales at nearly 72%. | :01:12. | :01:16.
Our political editor, Nick Servini, reports on how Wales voted. | :01:17. | :01:21.
This day is British Independence Day! | :01:22. | :01:24.
They don't look like much out in the rain on the streets | :01:25. | :01:28.
of Newport, but more than 850,000 people across Wales backed | :01:29. | :01:33.
the cause promoted by these Vote Leave campaigners. | :01:34. | :01:37.
Even for some diehards, it came as a surprise, | :01:38. | :01:40.
but for many here it was a result of years of work. | :01:41. | :01:46.
Last night, Wales voted for us to leave the EU. | :01:47. | :01:48.
It wasn't just England pulling the rest of Britain out | :01:49. | :01:53.
of Europe, out of the EU, it was England and Wales. | :01:54. | :01:57.
And as we've seen throughout the campaign, | :01:58. | :02:00.
You go home to a nice, little house... | :02:01. | :02:05.
There was always a sense of the band of brothers taking | :02:06. | :02:08.
on the establishment with the vote Leave campaign, and it generated | :02:09. | :02:13.
excitement and enthusiasm that frankly the other side | :02:14. | :02:16.
They just could not make their greater size count, | :02:17. | :02:21.
and when they did start campaigning, they were too late to the party. | :02:22. | :02:26.
The most prominent vote Leave campaigner in Wales was the leader | :02:27. | :02:29.
of the Welsh Conservatives, Andrew RT Davies. | :02:30. | :02:31.
He says he was proud to play his part. | :02:32. | :02:34.
The beliefs and aspirations of what we were seeking to achieve | :02:35. | :02:38.
were magnified last night by the vote, the substantial vote, | :02:39. | :02:42.
to recast our relationship with Europe. | :02:43. | :02:45.
And I believe my team stuck to their convictions, | :02:46. | :02:48.
stuck loyally with me, and we have succeeded | :02:49. | :02:51.
with a family of activists that were in the Leave campaign. | :02:52. | :02:54.
Their jubilation was in stark contrast to a downbeat news | :02:55. | :02:57.
conference in Cardiff, in which Carwyn Jones | :02:58. | :03:00.
He also refused to take responsibility for the result | :03:01. | :03:05.
in Wales, saying he did not choose the timing of the referendum, | :03:06. | :03:08.
but he admitted there was a disconnect between Labour | :03:09. | :03:12.
Too many people in these communities feel that politics and our economy | :03:13. | :03:20.
has left them behind, and we have a real task ahead | :03:21. | :03:23.
There was also a call for stability from the leader | :03:24. | :03:30.
In the next phase now, the chances are it could be | :03:31. | :03:35.
even more difficult, unless we are prepared to pull together | :03:36. | :03:38.
as politicians and as civic society in Wales, to make sure | :03:39. | :03:43.
that our needs are fully understood by Westminster and delivered upon. | :03:44. | :03:48.
The result in Wales mirrored that in England. | :03:49. | :03:50.
Cardiff chose to remain, with the biggest majority. | :03:51. | :03:53.
Together with affluent areas like the Vale | :03:54. | :03:56.
of Glamorgan and Monmouthshire, and with the | :03:57. | :03:58.
Welsh-speaking heartlands of Ceredigion and Gwynedd. | :03:59. | :04:02.
Plaid Cymru, which is strong here, had urged its supporters | :04:03. | :04:08.
With its university and large hospital, Bangor's | :04:09. | :04:13.
The city's Pontio arts complex was built using EU cash. | :04:14. | :04:18.
Its executive director Dewi Hughes says the future is now uncertain. | :04:19. | :04:24.
It would be a great shame obviously of those opportunities are not | :04:25. | :04:27.
available to these kinds of areas in the future. | :04:28. | :04:31.
Again, I hope that in whatever new settlement comes, | :04:32. | :04:34.
there will be the opportunities to obtain that kind of funding | :04:35. | :04:38.
for economically disadvantaged areas. | :04:39. | :04:42.
It was a very different story in Blaenau Gwent, | :04:43. | :04:44.
the most Eurosceptic area, voting by 62-48 to leave. | :04:45. | :04:49.
It was one of many former industrial communities | :04:50. | :04:53.
in the labour heartland in the South Wales Valleys to reject remain | :04:54. | :04:56.
despite receiving millions in EU funding. | :04:57. | :05:00.
I think people are trying to take control back from the Government. | :05:01. | :05:05.
I think to get our country back owned by ourselves | :05:06. | :05:07.
I think there are too many immigrants coming | :05:08. | :05:13.
For many years, Wales was considered one of | :05:14. | :05:20.
Nick, what is your assessment of the result? | :05:21. | :05:30.
I would argue that the symbolic significance of Brexit is as | :05:31. | :05:37.
important here as anywhere else in the UK. After the demise of heavy | :05:38. | :05:43.
industry the EU played a major role. Grants to deprived areas. The single | :05:44. | :05:49.
market was central to weaken -- economic policies. What is | :05:50. | :05:52.
fascinating is it has been rejected most strongly in the communities | :05:53. | :05:57.
that were supposed to have benefited the most. Why is that? The Brexit | :05:58. | :06:02.
campaigners will tell you they have been successful in arguing the case | :06:03. | :06:07.
that it is important to regain control. I've been on the campaign | :06:08. | :06:11.
for weeks and people have told me they have been voting Leave for all | :06:12. | :06:18.
sorts of reasons. They wanted to kick David Cameron and the bankers. | :06:19. | :06:23.
In the middle of all of this, the subject of immigration has dominated | :06:24. | :06:27.
this by the fact that some of these communities, migration is no higher | :06:28. | :06:32.
than 3%. That isn't the point. The fear of immigration is there and | :06:33. | :06:36.
that is why so many people voted to Leave. What does this mean for the | :06:37. | :06:41.
political parties? Labour were going to do the heavy | :06:42. | :06:44.
lifting on this. The questions tonight about the role of Welsh | :06:45. | :06:50.
Labour. We had an Assembly campaign but why was it they were so late out | :06:51. | :06:56.
campaigning? A momentum against the EU had generated by the time they | :06:57. | :06:59.
got there. It was impossible to stop when it's got going. | :07:00. | :07:01.
The economic case for Wales' future in or out of the European Union | :07:02. | :07:04.
was key to the debate from the very beginning of this | :07:05. | :07:07.
Several top Welsh business leaders backed Remain, | :07:08. | :07:09.
highlighting the importance of the single market | :07:10. | :07:11.
But Leave supporters argued businesses would still be able | :07:12. | :07:14.
to trade with the EU after a Brexit and that jobs wouldn't be at risk. | :07:15. | :07:18.
So what effect will the leave vote have on businesses | :07:19. | :07:20.
Here's our business correspondent, Brian Meechan. | :07:21. | :07:23.
Wales has a small number of big companies including Airbus, Toyota | :07:24. | :07:27.
They largely supported Remain in the European Union. | :07:28. | :07:31.
Airbus said it was concerned about future investment in its | :07:32. | :07:35.
Deeside plant in the event of Brexit. | :07:36. | :07:38.
Back in 2014 we announced a large investment in Wales so that is | :07:39. | :07:43.
We're increasing the automation to ramp up production in | :07:44. | :07:47.
But future investments, like everyone else, we will have | :07:48. | :07:53.
to consider future investments and I can't commit to that. | :07:54. | :07:57.
There may not be many big companies in Wales but | :07:58. | :08:00.
Around 38% of the private sector workforce. | :08:01. | :08:05.
Medium-sized firms employ about 12%, while smaller firms have | :08:06. | :08:09.
House-builders including another big Welsh company, Redrow, have seen | :08:10. | :08:15.
their share value drop significantly since vote Leave | :08:16. | :08:19.
The property sector is taking an immediate hit | :08:20. | :08:23.
from the decision as people expect there will be less demand for costly | :08:24. | :08:26.
TRJ is a building company in Ammanford that employs 180 people. | :08:27. | :08:35.
The construction industry was particularly badly hit by the | :08:36. | :08:38.
financial crisis that started in 2007. | :08:39. | :08:42.
They hadn't planned for or expected Brexit and | :08:43. | :08:48.
they are now concerned about the future. | :08:49. | :08:50.
I don't think anybody planned for what happened today. | :08:51. | :08:53.
As a country, Wales has benefited, in our view, from being members | :08:54. | :09:00.
of the EU by virtue of the funding that has come back. | :09:01. | :09:03.
The First Minister is calling for Wales to be given | :09:04. | :09:06.
guarantees that it won't lose out financially from Brexit so working | :09:07. | :09:09.
Companies don't like uncertainty but successful ones are able | :09:10. | :09:14.
Brexit is very different at this medical leech farm in Llanelli. | :09:15. | :09:21.
It trades all over the world including with the | :09:22. | :09:23.
European Union but its boss says Brussels regulations have been | :09:24. | :09:26.
We may have to increase our breeding for example and we will | :09:27. | :09:31.
Over the long term, once that initial setup is done, | :09:32. | :09:39.
the overheads are going to be greatly increased by this. | :09:40. | :09:42.
What happens next for businesses is uncertain. | :09:43. | :09:45.
Aston Martin, which plans to start car production in south | :09:46. | :09:49.
Wales, has asked the UK Government for assurances. | :09:50. | :09:51.
The impact on the potential sale of Tata's operations will also | :09:52. | :09:56.
And there's much more information on our website about the decision | :09:57. | :10:01.
to leave the European Union and its implications. | :10:02. | :10:06.
And a GP who was cleared over the death of a 12-year-old boy has | :10:07. | :10:10.
been formally acquitted of attempting to pervert | :10:11. | :10:12.
Ryan Morse from Blaenau Gwent died in 2012 from Addison's disease. | :10:13. | :10:18.
A judge ruled last month that Dr Joanne Rudling had no case | :10:19. | :10:22.
The case was also thrown out against Dr Rudling's | :10:23. | :10:26.
Workers at National Museum Wales have accepted a deal to resolve | :10:27. | :10:33.
The museum had been attempting to end "premium payments" | :10:34. | :10:39.
The PCS Union balloted its members over an improved offer. | :10:40. | :10:43.
The Welsh Government is providing the extra money being offered | :10:44. | :10:46.
Let's turn to Euro 2016 now where Wales play | :10:47. | :10:52.
Northern Ireland tomorrow, with a place in the quarter finals | :10:53. | :10:54.
After dismantling Russia on Monday the challenge now is to reproduce | :10:55. | :11:02.
that performance against Northern Ireland. | :11:03. | :11:04.
Along with at least another 20,000 Welsh fans, | :11:05. | :11:11.
the city of light is due to have a touch of red tomorrow, | :11:12. | :11:14.
with the green and white army also adding to | :11:15. | :11:17.
Following the referendum result, there is more than just football | :11:18. | :11:22.
It took me by surprise, I didn't expect that result. | :11:23. | :11:28.
Where we have been staying in quite remote areas of France, | :11:29. | :11:32.
we had some Danish people, some Dutch people staying with us, | :11:33. | :11:35.
and they were all totally bemused this morning, | :11:36. | :11:38.
not sure whether it was foolish thing or a brave thing we've done. | :11:39. | :11:43.
My mind has been taken off it with the football. | :11:44. | :11:45.
I voted to stay in. I'm shocked that we're leaving. | :11:46. | :11:48.
We have had a lot of locals asking us about it. | :11:49. | :11:51.
We have been concentrating on the football, but we woke up to | :11:52. | :11:54.
It was also discussed in today's press conference. | :11:55. | :12:02.
Talking about being in or out of Europe. | :12:03. | :12:06.
We're still in it and it's all we care about as a team. | :12:07. | :12:09.
It's on the news, but it's not our focus. | :12:10. | :12:13.
We will talk about that when we get back. | :12:14. | :12:15.
For Welsh footballers, it is a first here at Parc des Princes, | :12:16. | :12:18.
but some fans will remember the ground as being the | :12:19. | :12:21.
former home of French rugby, where in 15 games Wales | :12:22. | :12:26.
Tomorrow, it will be a different story. | :12:27. | :12:31.
This Wales team is physical, matches the work rate | :12:32. | :12:34.
of the opposition and fights, really. | :12:35. | :12:37.
We know it will be a tough physical game against Northern Ireland | :12:38. | :12:40.
and we will more than match that, as we always do. | :12:41. | :12:43.
Chris Coleman's men may be the favourites before | :12:44. | :12:46.
the five o'clock kick-off but Northern Ireland went | :12:47. | :12:48.
The last game between both sides ended in a draw. | :12:49. | :12:56.
The final score in March was 1-1 after a late penalty by | :12:57. | :13:00.
A shoot out would be a dramatic way to decide whether | :13:01. | :13:04.
When it comes to a Euros' vote, Welsh fans in Paris want to remain. | :13:05. | :13:14.
There's live coverage on BBC One Wales and S4C | :13:15. | :13:19.
as well as commentary on BBC Radio Wales and Radio Cymru. | :13:20. | :13:24.
Glamorgan completed a convincing double over Surrey | :13:25. | :13:29.
in Cardiff tonight, winning by nine wickets. | :13:30. | :13:31.
The hosts reached a modest target of 111 with 4.1 overs to spare. | :13:32. | :13:37.
Dean Cosker became the first Glamorgan bowler to reach 100 | :13:38. | :13:40.
Let's get the weekend weather forecast now, with Behnaz Akhgar. | :13:41. | :13:48.
The forecast is looking pretty unsettled for the weekend but | :13:49. | :13:51.
feeling much fresher than the past few days. | :13:52. | :13:53.
Through tonight, we've got a few coastal showers but the bulk | :13:54. | :13:56.
of the country is dry with some clear skies. | :13:57. | :13:58.
Overnight temperatures getting down to nine Celsius. | :13:59. | :14:01.
Fresher than the past few nights and it should be more | :14:02. | :14:03.
Tomorrow, low-pressure nearby but also high pressure is | :14:04. | :14:08.
First thing tomorrow morning there will be a few | :14:09. | :14:12.
Some sunshine in between the showers, the odd heavier one | :14:13. | :14:16.
For the rest of the British Isles, it is a day of | :14:17. | :14:21.
sunshine and showers, some of those showers heavy | :14:22. | :14:23.
Here in Wales tomorrow afternoon, most of the showers will clear | :14:24. | :14:33.
and we can look forward to more in the way | :14:34. | :14:35.
Those temperatures will range between 16-19 Celsius with brisk | :14:36. | :14:41.
On Sunday, it will start off dry and bright but we | :14:42. | :14:45.
have rain arriving from the west by the afternoon. | :14:46. | :14:51.
We'll be back tomorrow evening at 7.25pm. | :14:52. | :14:54.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend. Goodbye. | :14:55. | :14:56. |
