100 years after the start of the Battle of the Somme,

:00:00.:00:08.

commemorations across the country to remember.

:00:09.:00:19.

Very proud and very humbled I what they did. I would not be here if not

:00:20.:00:25.

for what they did, or their sacrifice.

:00:26.:00:30.

An RAF fly past over Caernarfon in honour

:00:31.:00:32.

of a daring airman from the town, awarded the Victoria Cross

:00:33.:00:34.

for an attack he led on the first day of battle.

:00:35.:00:45.

Also tonight, former Lostprophets singer Ian Watkins

:00:46.:00:48.

was jailed for child sex offences in 2013.

:00:49.:00:50.

Three police officers now face misconduct proceedings

:00:51.:00:51.

an hour away from the biggest game in a generation.

:00:52.:01:01.

Can Wales eclipse the team of 1958 and reach a semifinals

:01:02.:01:06.

I would have given my right hand to play tonight.

:01:07.:01:12.

the quarterfinal of the European Championships.

:01:13.:01:20.

But tonight, many fans are stuck at Folkestone -

:01:21.:01:22.

problems at Eurotunnel mean they could miss the match -

:01:23.:01:25.

Services of remembrance have been held across Wales to mark 100 years

:01:26.:01:38.

Commemorations were held at the National War Memorial

:01:39.:01:42.

in Cardiff, and at cenotaphs and war memorials

:01:43.:01:45.

in towns and villages across the country.

:01:46.:01:48.

On July 1st 1916, the battlefields of Northern France witnessed

:01:49.:01:53.

the biggest, single loss of life in the history of the British Army,

:01:54.:01:59.

and eventually more than a million men would die on all sides.

:02:00.:02:01.

There was a distinctive Welsh flavour at Thiepval Memorial

:02:02.:02:12.

in Northern France to commemorate the centenary of the Somme.

:02:13.:02:15.

This choir sang before princes, presidents and prime ministers,

:02:16.:02:19.

in memory of the bloodiest chapter in British military history.

:02:20.:02:26.

Back home in Wales, a special service at Llandaff Cathedral

:02:27.:02:28.

A trench lantern from 1916 formed the centrepiece of this service.

:02:29.:02:34.

At first light, it was transported to Cardiff's Cathays Park.

:02:35.:02:38.

At the National War Memorial, a poignant service for the 19,240

:02:39.:02:49.

British soldiers who died on that first day of battles,

:02:50.:02:54.

Just before 7:30am, two minutes of silence to honour them.

:02:55.:03:01.

Whistles were then blown to signify the start of battle,

:03:02.:03:04.

by these former soldiers of the 3rd Battalion Royal Welsh.

:03:05.:03:07.

Very proud and very humble for what they did.

:03:08.:03:09.

I wouldn't be here now if it wasn't for them or their sacrifice.

:03:10.:03:14.

My grandfather served, as did his brother,

:03:15.:03:16.

We timed it to the 7:30am mark, and there is a poignancy to that.

:03:17.:03:32.

I think we felt a oneness with them that was hugely significant.

:03:33.:03:40.

Just something that we have all got to remember, and look to the future,

:03:41.:03:44.

because this is about how we can develop peace and reconciliation.

:03:45.:03:52.

As part of the commemoration here, 100 volunteers, organised

:03:53.:03:55.

by National Theatre Wales, paraded through several

:03:56.:03:58.

Welsh locations dressed as First World War Tommies.

:03:59.:04:01.

We're Here Because We're Here was an arts performance

:04:02.:04:04.

mirrored across Britain, designed to humanise

:04:05.:04:06.

the dead soldiers and interact with the public.

:04:07.:04:09.

This morning, people will have found soldiers of varying ages in places

:04:10.:04:15.

in train stations, in markets, in streets.

:04:16.:04:22.

If you met one of those soldiers, they would give you a card,

:04:23.:04:25.

and on that card is some information about a real soldier.

:04:26.:04:29.

Their name, their title, and when they died.

:04:30.:04:33.

Lance Corporal Alfred John Clark, 2nd Battalion South Wales Borders.

:04:34.:04:38.

I was watching on television last night,

:04:39.:04:40.

Smaller services were held all over the country,

:04:41.:04:48.

ensuring that a century on, those who laid down their lives

:04:49.:04:50.

One of the heroes of the Somme has been commemorated

:04:51.:04:56.

Major Lionel Rees won the Victoria Cross for a daring attack

:04:57.:05:02.

on German aircraft on the first day of the battle.

:05:03.:05:05.

A plaque has been unveiled in his hometown

:05:06.:05:07.

and the RAF performed a flypast in his honour.

:05:08.:05:17.

one of the true pioneers of military aviation.

:05:18.:05:22.

Major Lionel Rees was born in Caernarfon in 1884

:05:23.:05:25.

and joined the Royal Flying Corp in 1914,

:05:26.:05:27.

initially piloting the so-called Gunbus.

:05:28.:05:31.

By the time he was sent to France in 1916,

:05:32.:05:33.

he had graduated to the DeHavilland Pusher Scout.

:05:34.:05:37.

The experience of flying this particular type of aircraft

:05:38.:05:40.

It's very noisy, there's lots of wind,

:05:41.:05:44.

there's a smell of oil and so, in some respects,

:05:45.:05:47.

But, particularly above the Somme at that time,

:05:48.:05:52.

it would also have been absolutely terrifying.

:05:53.:05:57.

It was in that plane that Major Rees earned his Victoria Cross

:05:58.:06:00.

as allied troops on the ground began their gruelling battle.

:06:01.:06:03.

He attacked five enemy aircraft on the 1st of July 1916.

:06:04.:06:06.

He damaged two and was wounded in the leg

:06:07.:06:09.

before regaining his strength and chasing off the rest.

:06:10.:06:13.

When his ammunition was used up, he drew his pistol.

:06:14.:06:16.

But this was just one chapter in his extraordinary life.

:06:17.:06:20.

If I could pick anybody I would loved to have met,

:06:21.:06:22.

He was a man who was fascinated by everything,

:06:23.:06:26.

and nothing daunted him - he became an expert pilot.

:06:27.:06:32.

I claim, the first ever official fighter pilot in the world.

:06:33.:06:36.

He then became an archaeologist, he became a sailor.

:06:37.:06:41.

At a ceremony in Caernarfon today Lionel Rees was honoured again.

:06:42.:06:44.

His post-war life saw him sail singlehanded

:06:45.:06:46.

He returned to the RAF as a wing commander in the Second World War

:06:47.:06:52.

before getting married at the age of 62.

:06:53.:06:54.

He died of leukaemia aged 71 in 1955.

:06:55.:06:57.

You can find more stories and archive on our website -

:06:58.:07:06.

And next week we'll be reporting from the Welsh commemorations

:07:07.:07:12.

at Mametz Wood, where thousands from all over Wales were killed

:07:13.:07:15.

For football fans, it's what dreams are made of -

:07:16.:07:25.

Wales, playing for a place in the semifinals

:07:26.:07:27.

and Tomos Dafydd is in Lille for us tonight,

:07:28.:07:36.

The agonising wait for Wales fans is nearly over.

:07:37.:07:48.

Kick-off here in Lille is in just over an hour.

:07:49.:07:51.

The fan zone here is full, with 20,000 fans.

:07:52.:07:54.

It's the biggest game in a generation, but some fans say

:07:55.:07:58.

they could miss the game tonight because of problems at Eurotunnel.

:07:59.:08:10.

Some fans say they've been waiting up to three hours.

:08:11.:08:12.

Eurotunnel say the delays were caused by cancellations

:08:13.:08:14.

Well, we've spoken before about the Wales team making history -

:08:15.:08:23.

Now the players could go further than any other Welsh team,

:08:24.:08:27.

and into a semifinals at a major tournament,

:08:28.:08:29.

Our first report tonight is from Iwan Griffiths.

:08:30.:08:42.

From day one, they pleaded to stay for four-week 's. They have had

:08:43.:08:53.

their wish granted. I will have to remortgage the house when I get

:08:54.:08:56.

home, because we have spent a fortune. But we have had a fab US

:08:57.:09:03.

time. -- a fabulous time. We have if you contact and they have come good

:09:04.:09:07.

for the tickets. With over 100,000 pounds crossing the border from

:09:08.:09:12.

Belgium, the Welsh are in the minority, but they have mixed well,

:09:13.:09:16.

the flag flown with pride. Through the qualifiers and the tournament,

:09:17.:09:20.

just the whole of Wales has come together to support one nation.

:09:21.:09:26.

Absolutely fantastic. In Folkestone this afternoon, many fans feared

:09:27.:09:29.

they would not make the game at all. Problems at Eurotunnel and there

:09:30.:09:32.

were delays to trains of around three hours. Some fans reported five

:09:33.:09:37.

hour-long waits. Eurotunnel say the problems were caused by

:09:38.:09:41.

cancellations due to technical problems. To night, you waive it

:09:42.:09:45.

says the bus majority of fans with tickets will arrive on time. There

:09:46.:09:50.

is a 3.5 or four hour delay on everyone's journey here. It is a

:09:51.:09:59.

real maelstrom of emotions. We are in a situation where we tried to get

:10:00.:10:04.

a very ugly cannot get out. We are trapped and clock watching, and

:10:05.:10:08.

there are many lifelong fans, it is heartbreaking. It was a goal that

:10:09.:10:18.

got the ball rolling in Bordeaux. And who can forget this? There is

:10:19.:10:27.

plenty to pick from the game against Russia, Wales top of the group. An

:10:28.:10:32.

own goal pushed Wales through in the next round. Tonight, the

:10:33.:10:36.

quarterfinals. Wales will be watching.

:10:37.:10:43.

It is about 11 men fronting up against another 11 men for 90

:10:44.:10:47.

minutes on the day. Respect everyone. Fear no one. Let's do

:10:48.:10:59.

this. And the captain who impressed, Belgian start -- Belgium start as

:11:00.:11:09.

favourites. We will treat it as normal but we do understand it is

:11:10.:11:13.

the quarterfinals, so we will be up for it. Fully focused, as we have

:11:14.:11:20.

been. Everything is on track. Wales have exceeded expectations and, if

:11:21.:11:24.

the bow out of Euro 2016 tonight, they will do so as heroes. Football

:11:25.:11:30.

has united the country, people who did not even follow the game brought

:11:31.:11:34.

together to back Chris Coleman's man. They might be underdogs, but

:11:35.:11:40.

keeping the competition in the quarterfinals is something Chris

:11:41.:11:45.

Coleman says he hasn't contemplated. You write this Welsh team off at

:11:46.:11:46.

your peril. Wales are underdogs,

:11:47.:11:48.

but will be quietly confident, having beaten Belgium

:11:49.:11:50.

in Cardiff last year. The former Wales striker,

:11:51.:11:57.

John Hartson, says Belgium being favourites

:11:58.:11:58.

will suit Chris Coleman's team - I bet you would love to play in a

:11:59.:12:13.

tournament like this, on a night like this. Of course. I won over 50

:12:14.:12:19.

caps for my country as a number nine for Wales. Every time I did it, was

:12:20.:12:23.

immensely proud. I would have given my right hand to play tonight, you

:12:24.:12:30.

know, in this game such magnitude, the quarterfinal of the European

:12:31.:12:34.

championships. Against Belgium, 18 that we know very well, we have the

:12:35.:12:40.

knowledge of beating Belgium. -- a team that we know very well. We have

:12:41.:12:46.

been to Brussels in the last two years and picked up good results. We

:12:47.:12:49.

have not lost in the last three games against Belgium. This time

:12:50.:12:53.

last year, in Cardiff, we beat them. The wonderful, great victory which

:12:54.:13:00.

helped us qualify, of course. It is a great occasion. Who would have

:13:01.:13:04.

thought it? Wales in the quarterfinal of the European

:13:05.:13:08.

championships. I sense you are edging towards the underdog pushing

:13:09.:13:12.

through tonight. I'm under no illusions that this is a difficult

:13:13.:13:17.

tie. It is the quarterfinal. There are 100,000 Belgian supporters here

:13:18.:13:23.

tonight, and 105 Welsh borders. I doubt there are that many! I think

:13:24.:13:28.

there are about 20 but they have been singing just as loudly. There

:13:29.:13:33.

is a massive expectation on Belgium. This is the golden generation,

:13:34.:13:40.

really. The likes of Eden Hazzard and the others. You know, they have

:13:41.:13:53.

got to deliver. For Wales, we have done magnificently well. We don't

:13:54.:13:56.

want our journey to end. Anything can happen.

:13:57.:14:02.

John Hartson, one of several former players over the decades

:14:03.:14:05.

who never got the chance to play at a major tournament.

:14:06.:14:07.

And past failures makes this summer so special -

:14:08.:14:11.

we'll be seeing how the nation's preparing for tonight's game.

:14:12.:14:14.

Three police officers are to face misconduct proceedings

:14:15.:14:16.

over their handling of allegations of child abuse

:14:17.:14:18.

against the former Lostprophets singer Ian Watkins.

:14:19.:14:22.

One of the officers could face dismissal.

:14:23.:14:24.

Ian Watkins was given a 35-year sentence in 2013

:14:25.:14:28.

for a series of child sex offences.

:14:29.:14:30.

He was the front man of what was once labelled the UK's 80/ band. But

:14:31.:14:45.

high in this celebrity image was a paedophile. When his offences were

:14:46.:14:50.

uncovered, they were deemed to be among the worst ever dealt with by

:14:51.:14:55.

our courts. Watkins was back home in Pontypridd when he was arrested.

:14:56.:15:01.

Police went on a tip-off that he had child abuse images. The discovered a

:15:02.:15:11.

staggering 27 terabytes of images, more than could be stored by the

:15:12.:15:15.

whole North Wales police force. That was in December 2012, and concerns

:15:16.:15:20.

had been raised long before that. The IPCC has looked at allegations

:15:21.:15:24.

made over a four-year period, to establish who knew what and when and

:15:25.:15:30.

how police officers responded. Today, it has announced that three

:15:31.:15:34.

officers, a detective sergeant based here in Pontypridd, and to detective

:15:35.:15:38.

constables will face misconduct proceedings. In response, John Drake

:15:39.:15:44.

from South Wales Police said... An ex-girlfriend of Watkins, who

:15:45.:16:01.

repeatedly warned the police about him, has said she feels vindicated

:16:02.:16:07.

by the IPCC enquiry. Joanne told the BBC that she still feels traumatised

:16:08.:16:11.

and frustrated that the most that can happen would be for an officer

:16:12.:16:18.

to be sacked. The NSPCC has also said that the case raises serious

:16:19.:16:22.

questions, and once the misconduct proceedings concluded swiftly to

:16:23.:16:27.

provide the public with answers. It is of grave concern that the

:16:28.:16:31.

independents can please -- that the IPCC as combine that they were not

:16:32.:16:37.

properly investigated. We believe that he could have been brought to

:16:38.:16:41.

justice earlier. It is an incredibly difficult step for any member of the

:16:42.:16:45.

public to report child sexual abuse, and what they need to know is that

:16:46.:16:49.

any reports that they take to the police will be properly investigated

:16:50.:16:53.

and acted upon immediately. The IPCC says it will issue for the findings

:16:54.:17:00.

into the investigation, including the examination of the wider

:17:01.:17:02.

organisational response of South Wales Police, following the

:17:03.:17:05.

conclusion of the misconduct proceedings.

:17:06.:17:07.

More than ?800,000 of "resettlement payments" have been given

:17:08.:17:09.

to 18 Assembly Members who left the Senedd in May.

:17:10.:17:11.

The largest sum, of almost ?65,000,

:17:12.:17:15.

was given to former Economy Minister Edwina Hart.

:17:16.:17:17.

The amounts paid to AMs elected before 2011

:17:18.:17:19.

depended on their age, length of service

:17:20.:17:24.

A meeting will be held by Ceredigion council next week to address how

:17:25.:17:29.

the local authority and police can handle illegal gatherings better.

:17:30.:17:35.

A multi-agency meeting, conducted after 2,000 people attended

:17:36.:17:38.

an illegal rave near Llanddewi Brefi last month, said the way

:17:39.:17:41.

it was handled by the authorities was not fit for purpose.

:17:42.:17:46.

Natural Resources Wales has re-opened

:17:47.:17:47.

It's the ninth year in succession they've opened

:17:48.:17:54.

since a licensing system was introduced,

:17:55.:17:56.

who can gather them to preserve numbers.

:17:57.:18:03.

have been gathering in Cardiff this evening.

:18:04.:18:07.

comes following a vote of no confidence in the Labour leader,

:18:08.:18:13.

and 60,000 new sign-ups to the party over the past week,

:18:14.:18:16.

since the UK voted to leave the European Union.

:18:17.:18:22.

Our reporter is at the event for us to night.

:18:23.:18:28.

Plenty of Jeremy Corbyn supporters here. Plenty of placards and

:18:29.:18:33.

banners. I am joined by two supporters, Siobhan and Becky.

:18:34.:18:38.

If I could come to you first. Jeremy Corbyn has clearly lost the

:18:39.:18:45.

conference of the Parliamentary Labour Party. Why is he the right

:18:46.:18:50.

choice for the Labour Party? He is the real choice for the Labour Party

:18:51.:18:53.

because of all these people standing here, the members believe that

:18:54.:18:56.

Jeremy Corbyn is the voice of the masses. We have chosen our leader

:18:57.:19:02.

already. If other MPs feel he is not fit enough to lead, I suggest they

:19:03.:19:05.

throw their hats in the ring and let's have it out. If there is an

:19:06.:19:09.

alternative person, that you want to elect, that you want to put forward,

:19:10.:19:15.

but them forward and let's see what happens. These people here will make

:19:16.:19:18.

sure that Jeremy Corbyn remains as our leader. It seems to be there is

:19:19.:19:22.

a disconnect between the Parliamentary Labour Party and

:19:23.:19:27.

grassroots. How much of a disconnect is that? There is a massive

:19:28.:19:34.

disconnect. Look at the numbers of people who have taken a decision,

:19:35.:19:38.

and we are disappointed that people have taken the decision to not back

:19:39.:19:42.

Jeremy Corbyn and to ignore their own constituents, party members.

:19:43.:19:46.

People are going to their own MPs and saying, what is going on? We

:19:47.:19:52.

know who our leader is. This person stands on an anti-austerity

:19:53.:19:56.

platform. Back your leader or step aside. I will come to you. You're

:19:57.:20:01.

one of the sick the thousands who members. Why did you join the Labour

:20:02.:20:09.

Party? I have always been interested in politics, but not party politics,

:20:10.:20:12.

because I did not think they had anything to offer me. When Jeremy

:20:13.:20:16.

Corbyn came along, he offered a different type of politics, the type

:20:17.:20:19.

Apollo takes I could get behind. It is for the people on the street,

:20:20.:20:22.

that is what I want to be involved in. Thank you very much. Lots of

:20:23.:20:27.

Jeremy Corbyn supporters here. Clearly, that is not a sentiment

:20:28.:20:30.

echoed in the Parliamentary party. Thank you.

:20:31.:20:32.

Let's return to France, where kick-off is drawing ever closer.

:20:33.:20:41.

For decades, fans have been starved of success -

:20:42.:20:43.

cast your mind back to 2011, and Wales were ranked below

:20:44.:20:46.

the likes of United Arab Emirates and the Faroe Isles.

:20:47.:20:48.

Kate Morgan now on the fans who've endured so much,

:20:49.:20:52.

but can finally enjoy supporting a team on the biggest stage.

:20:53.:21:02.

It took 58 years for Wales to arrive here, and 40 years to make a second

:21:03.:21:09.

quarterfinal. Never mind is on Wales, and come the hour, come the

:21:10.:21:19.

12th man. It is a day of school so good! I have supported Wales all of

:21:20.:21:30.

my life. The atmosphere is unreal, it makes me shiver. I can feel it

:21:31.:21:43.

now. It is immense. So many moments when we thought we were about to do

:21:44.:21:46.

it and then we didn't quite do it, and then we did do it, and now we

:21:47.:21:50.

are here. It is just brilliant. Everything and start to finish has

:21:51.:21:54.

been amazing. That gradual realisation that it was the

:21:55.:22:01.

possibility, a distinct possibility, then it has happened. Yet, it is

:22:02.:22:10.

great. Never thought I would see it. I have supported Wales for 30 years.

:22:11.:22:13.

You cannot even put into words how important my kids. When the draw was

:22:14.:22:19.

made, we thought oh! Would we get out of the group? Then we topped it.

:22:20.:22:25.

It was incredible. The Russia game was something I had not experienced

:22:26.:22:30.

in 30 years. To top the group above everyone else. Collectively, the

:22:31.:22:34.

wall of red has given Gareth Bale the response. Their passion is

:22:35.:22:42.

incredible. They are also not ready for the party to be over. Desperate

:22:43.:22:45.

for one more winning Welsh performance and perhaps one more

:22:46.:22:47.

song. SINGING The nation will come

to a standstill tonight, with plenty of support

here and back home. In a moment, we'll hear

:22:58.:22:59.

from Iwan Griffiths, who's made his way to

:23:50.:23:55.

is new to me. I was born in Wales, I have always supported our nation,

:23:56.:24:02.

but I just wanted to get involved. Spirits are high, and it is a good

:24:03.:24:08.

atmosphere, isn't it? Yes, it is, a good family atmosphere. Lots of

:24:09.:24:11.

people supporting the nation. I understand you are an honorary

:24:12.:24:15.

Welshman tonight. You are from England? I'm originally from

:24:16.:24:24.

England, but who are they? I may Wales supporter. Predictions for the

:24:25.:24:30.

:24:31.:24:33.

back to bite me. I will not make any predictions, but we will win. That

:24:34.:24:38.

is the right prediction! Thank you. Enjoy the game. Lots of fans here he

:24:39.:24:40.

would probably like to be in France. The fans are starting to arrive here
