One hundred years on, a service of commemoration is held

:00:11.:00:14.

in France to remember the thousands of Welsh soldiers killed or injured

:00:15.:00:16.

For those who were here, walking over barbed wire towards gunfire,

:00:17.:00:25.

and yet still they did it and I think

:00:26.:00:28.

it is difficult for us to understand that and that is why

:00:29.:00:32.

it is so important for us to remember it.

:00:33.:00:36.

At home in Wales too, the fallen were remembered.

:00:37.:00:52.

Also tonight, heading for home - the Euro 2016 dream may be over,

:00:53.:00:57.

but there'll be a heroes' welcome for this Wales team,

:00:58.:01:01.

I live in Paris and I have spent most of my life trying to explain

:01:02.:01:17.

to Paris taxi drivers the difference between

:01:18.:01:19.

I hope that as of last night, they are going to

:01:20.:01:22.

From Cardiff Castle, the team will parade

:01:23.:01:26.

We'll have all the details of tomorrow's big celebrations.

:01:27.:01:31.

And workers at Tata Steel sites in Wales wait for confirmation,

:01:32.:01:33.

but the company is expected to hold off on the sale of most

:01:34.:01:36.

It lasted five days, left more than a thousand Welsh men

:01:37.:01:44.

dead or missing, around 3,000 wounded.

:01:45.:01:48.

Today marks the centenary of the battle of Mametz Wood

:01:49.:01:50.

in northern France, where soldiers from across Wales were told

:01:51.:01:54.

Today, services were held across Wales as well as a special

:01:55.:02:00.

ceremony in France, from where Roger Pinney now reports.

:02:01.:02:17.

The music played by the band of the Royal Welsh would have been familiar

:02:18.:02:26.

to those who fought here. We are here today to remember but also to

:02:27.:02:32.

thank. And today was a time to remember. Those who travel to

:02:33.:02:36.

mammoths would for the ceremony came from all aspects of Welsh life, just

:02:37.:02:39.

as the soldiers of 1916 did. As wreaths were laid, there was a

:02:40.:02:56.

reminder of the terrible toll. In 15 minutes, the losses were greater

:02:57.:03:00.

than the British Army's 15 years in Afghanistan. I need to Jordan, uncle

:03:01.:03:11.

was among those who died. He died of wounds as a result of the battle on

:03:12.:03:16.

July the 11th. You are standing here on his ground. That is a very

:03:17.:03:25.

emotional. As you can imagine. I think how proud my father would have

:03:26.:03:32.

been. For those who work here, going through the mud, walking over barbed

:03:33.:03:36.

wire, towards gunfire, and yet still they did it. I think it is difficult

:03:37.:03:42.

for us to understand that and that is why it is so important for us to

:03:43.:03:48.

remember it. For five days the Welsh for her. Time and again they threw

:03:49.:03:57.

themselves at the wood. Accounts of the time talk of this valley strewn

:03:58.:03:59.

with the dead and wounded. We've become used now to the grainy

:04:00.:04:03.

black and white images of war. This remarkable film was recorded

:04:04.:04:06.

during the Battle of the Somme and then shown to packed

:04:07.:04:09.

picture houses back home. And some still photographs survive

:04:10.:04:12.

of the aftermath at Mametz Wood. Here, a wounded soldier is returning

:04:13.:04:16.

through the trenches. They give a flavour but can't fully

:04:17.:04:19.

convey the true horror. 30 years ago, BBC Wales interviewed

:04:20.:04:30.

men who lived through it. They included Albert Evans

:04:31.:04:33.

of the 16th Cardiff City battalion Alf Jackson of the 14th

:04:34.:04:35.

Swansea Welch and Williams Davies They did not have two shallots

:04:36.:04:54.

because they were mowing us down with the rifle fire, snipers and

:04:55.:05:01.

machine guns. When I look at the wood, it was all demolished.

:05:02.:05:08.

Branches down, trunks stripped, trunks lying down.

:05:09.:05:10.

Two Welsh rugby internationals were killed at Mametz,

:05:11.:05:12.

including Dick Thomas, a collier turned policeman who played in two

:05:13.:05:15.

The Welsh Rugby Union has put his shirt and caps on display.

:05:16.:05:30.

We have this remarkable account of his death. I remember this huge man

:05:31.:05:39.

down in front of me, he got on his knees and two hands on the ground,

:05:40.:05:43.

went down to the ground, killed like that. Just in front of you? Just in

:05:44.:05:55.

front of me. Many of those who died are buried at this ceremony.

:05:56.:06:00.

Men from north south east and west Wales who fought together and died

:06:01.:06:03.

Back home, events have been taking place across Wales to remember those

:06:04.:06:07.

who lost their lives at Mametz Wood and throughout World War One.

:06:08.:06:10.

From Cardiff to Caernarfon, hundreds of people have attended

:06:11.:06:13.

ceremonies to remember the Welsh men and women who made

:06:14.:06:16.

The last post rings out in the Welsh capital.

:06:17.:06:28.

150 men, women and children stood in silence on the very day,

:06:29.:06:32.

a century ago, that Welsh soldiers were being cut down at Mametz Wood.

:06:33.:06:38.

This ceremony marked the unveiling of Cardiff's first permanent

:06:39.:06:41.

memorial to the people of the city who lost their lives

:06:42.:06:43.

2,290 Cardiffians died in that conflict.

:06:44.:06:50.

Among those in attendance, Alan Barter, who's great uncle

:06:51.:06:53.

fought in World War One and who was the first solider

:06:54.:06:56.

from Cardiff to be awarded the Victoria Cross.

:06:57.:06:59.

I think it is fitting and in keeping that we remember

:07:00.:07:03.

these men who served and gave their lives

:07:04.:07:07.

This tree shaped memorial is suitably symbolic because more

:07:08.:07:14.

than a thousand trees have been planted here and when they grow

:07:15.:07:18.

they will fill a memorial wood, a living reminder of the sacrifice

:07:19.:07:21.

That sacrifice was honoured at Caernarfon too.

:07:22.:07:27.

Hundreds turned out in the driving rain to pay their respects

:07:28.:07:31.

at the opening of a memorial garden in the castle grounds.

:07:32.:07:35.

Children lined up with simple crosses to honour their forefathers.

:07:36.:07:39.

They get to know and they understand the

:07:40.:07:42.

history and the sacrifice that has been made by doing this for them for

:07:43.:07:46.

It is also a sign of continuation that even though the

:07:47.:07:52.

For those who lost relatives in the Great War, today provided

:07:53.:07:59.

Clare Noyce is the great niece of two men whose tragic fate

:08:00.:08:06.

symbolised the courage and carnage of Mametz Wood.

:08:07.:08:09.

Those men were brothers Thomas and Henry Hardwidge

:08:10.:08:12.

Henry ran out to give him water and to comfort him.

:08:13.:08:24.

He was then shot by a sniper and they both died

:08:25.:08:28.

Quite moving, the love that they must have

:08:29.:08:33.

It is one small story in the thousands that were killed.

:08:34.:08:39.

Today, across Wales, communities came together,

:08:40.:08:43.

honouring ancestors who went to war - many never to return.

:08:44.:08:46.

It's a sacrifice we've never forgotten and never will.

:08:47.:08:51.

Well, let's cross to Roger, who's in Albert in northern France.

:08:52.:09:00.

Roger, there's a concert taking place there tonight?

:09:01.:09:09.

Yes, it is in the building behind me. It is called the basilica and it

:09:10.:09:16.

has a real Welsh Labour because it involves the Treorchy Male voice

:09:17.:09:21.

choir who also sang at the service earlier today. I spoke to a few

:09:22.:09:25.

members of the choir and they said it was their first visit here and

:09:26.:09:29.

they have been incredibly moved by it. The concert tonight and the

:09:30.:09:33.

ceremony this afternoon has been organised by the South Wales branch

:09:34.:09:37.

of the Western front Association, many of which spent a considerable

:09:38.:09:42.

amount of time working with local French people to foster the memory

:09:43.:09:46.

of what the Welsh did her 100 years ago. That is really what this has

:09:47.:09:51.

all been about. Those survivors have left this now but if you speak to

:09:52.:09:57.

any of the many Welsh people here this week, they will tell you they

:09:58.:10:00.

are determined to make sure that this story will live on. Some of

:10:01.:10:06.

them have come on personal or images, thinking of members of their

:10:07.:10:11.

own families who were here. My own grandfather fought on the Somme. And

:10:12.:10:15.

we have had a real sense this week that while we are here, we have been

:10:16.:10:18.

walking in their footsteps. A 29-year-old man from Cardiff has

:10:19.:10:21.

been found guilty of causing the deaths of a father and his

:10:22.:10:25.

unborn baby by dangerous driving. Kyle Kennedy crashed into a car

:10:26.:10:28.

on Lamby Way on New Year's Eve. 33-year-old Simon Lewis

as they arrive home from France. Tata Steel is expected to announce

that it will hold off on the sale of most of its UK business,

including its site at Port Talbot, But the company says it will proceed

Cabinet ten days ago in process at Jeremy Corbyn's leadership. Since

:18:30.:18:34.

then he has maintained a diplomatic silence so speculation has grown

:18:35.:18:39.

among MPs about his own leadership ambitions. Today he has broken the

:18:40.:18:43.

silence with a statement in which he says that hundreds of Labour Party

:18:44.:18:48.

members and MPs have contacted him to shape their fears that the Labour

Party truly risks splitting apart. He says he shares those fears. He

has been to see Jeremy Corbyn, he has been to see Len McCluskey, the

union leader who is trying to broker a peace deal in all this. But he

says that Jeremy Corbyn and that peace talks should be given more

but then he adds in his statement, I stand ready to do anything I can to

save and serve the party. That can be taken one of two ways but most

:19:25.:19:30.

MPs think that if Jeremy Corbyn does not stand down, he will face a

:19:31.:19:34.

leadership challenge and Mr Smith stands ready to serve. Can Jeremy

:19:35.:19:42.

Corbyn Klingon? That is the big question. He says he is going

:19:43.:19:46.

nowhere but there are talks going on to see whether a settlement can be

:19:47.:19:51.

agreed. If he is still imposed early next week there will almost

:19:52.:19:57.

certainly be a challenge, either from Angela Eagle, another Shadow

:19:58.:20:01.

Cabinet departure last week, or perhaps from Owen Smith. Nobody

:20:02.:20:06.

knows how this is going to end, which is why it is so fascinating

for those outside the Labour Party and so traumatic for those inside

it. Neonatal services across Wales

invested in training staff. It is a very specialist area

:20:34.:20:38.

of recruitment around neonatal services and there is development

:20:39.:20:41.

and training we can put in place but I would have an expectation

:20:42.:20:44.

that the neonatal network along with health boards takes the report

very seriously and gives us reassurances on the steps

by last winter's storms. The Prince of Wales and Duchess

David Lammy, it aims to make recommendations on how to tackle any

institutional racism. In a recent survey, ethnic minority

prisoners at Cardiff reported a more positive experience

Minister David Cameron. As part of that review, he is being

shown around Cardiff Prison. During his tour he met a number

:22:07.:22:10.

of inmates who told him I know it is not going to help me

:22:11.:22:18.

because I have been sentenced already but I hope it changes it

for people in the future. Really and truly, if you are from

:24:01.:24:03.

the Wales team's homecoming? Yes, I have some good news. The

:24:04.:24:23.

weather is looking in good shape for tomorrow. Today has not been great.

:24:24.:24:28.

It has been rather unsettled, it has been feeling humid, and this weather

:24:29.:24:32.

front making its way south and eastwards. Tomorrow, after a damp

:24:33.:24:37.

start, by the afternoon it is looking much drier. That front

:24:38.:24:41.

pushing south and eastwards and it is going to push back up again in

:24:42.:24:46.

the overnight period. Some heavy rain is likely across the south-east

:24:47.:24:50.

but it is in the overnight period. Those temperatures pretty muddy. 16

:24:51.:24:57.

Celsius. And the wind coming from the south-west. Tomorrow, we get a

:24:58.:25:04.

brief break from the weather front but this deep area of low pressure

:25:05.:25:07.

in the Atlantic will bring wet and windy conditions by the time we get

:25:08.:25:11.

a Saturday. First thing tomorrow morning, sunlight and patchy rain.

:25:12.:25:17.

Pretty quickly, the wind will clear and by the afternoon we can look

:25:18.:25:21.

forward to something a bit brighter, feeling pleasantly warm in the

:25:22.:25:26.

sunshine. Still feeling humid with temperatures between 17 and 20

:25:27.:25:31.

Celsius. If you are going to the homecoming party tomorrow, you will

:25:32.:25:36.

need to take sunscreen with you. It is about 19 Celsius. We have got

:25:37.:25:40.

plenty of sunshine on offer as we head into the evening. Tomorrow

:25:41.:25:45.

night, some evening sunshine, a few showers running across mid and North

:25:46.:25:49.

Wales. We will start to see the next weather system pushing in from the

:25:50.:25:53.

West, bringing more persistent rain into the early hours of Saturday

:25:54.:25:58.

morning. Feeling very humid indeed. Overnight temperatures of 15

:25:59.:26:04.

Celsius. There is the front that is going to bring the wet and windy

:26:05.:26:08.

weather to Saturday. A bit of uncertainty about the positioning of

:26:09.:26:12.

the front but as it stands, most of us will see some rain as we go

:26:13.:26:18.

through the gate. Those temperatures still very mild. 21 Celsius. It will

:26:19.:26:23.

not feel cold despite the shortage of sunshine. You will need your

:26:24.:26:31.

waterproofs as you head out. As we head towards the rest of the

:26:32.:26:34.

weekend, Sunday there will be some sunny spells but also a few blustery

:26:35.:26:38.

showers. Very humid conditions as well. And as we start next week, it

:26:39.:26:46.

is looking less humid for Monday. Some sunny spells as well but still

:26:47.:26:52.

the risk of a few showers. Enjoy the sunshine tomorrow afternoon.

:26:53.:26:55.

It's approaching seven o'clock, the main news again from the BBC.

:26:56.:26:58.

Today marks the centenary of the First World War Battle

:26:59.:27:00.

It lasted five days and left more than a thousand Welsh men dead

:27:01.:27:05.

or missing as they launched an assault on a German standpoint.

:27:06.:27:08.

Today, services were held across Wales, as well as a special

:27:09.:27:11.

And following the Wales team's historic progress in Euro 2016,

:27:12.:27:18.

reaching the semifinals last night, the country is preparing

:27:19.:27:20.

Thousands are expected to line the streets of the Welsh capital

:27:21.:27:25.

tomorrow night to celebrate the team's achievements.

:27:26.:27:28.

I'm back with an update at 8pm and then again after the 10pm news.

:27:29.:27:32.

And don't forget to join us tomorrow for that special programme

:27:33.:27:34.

between 4pm and 6pm following the Wales football team

:27:35.:27:39.

For now though, from everyone here, good evening.
