Welcome to Wales Today, our top stories: Welsh Conservatives | :00:00. | :00:00.
give their reaction to Theresa May, their new party leader | :00:07. | :00:08.
It'll be nice for those who are concerned to have a Prime Minister | :00:09. | :00:21.
who is active and can put herself straight into the job. And do what | :00:22. | :00:23.
is best for the country. It'll cost ?375 million - | :00:24. | :00:36.
will the Welsh Government agree to underwrite half the cost | :00:37. | :00:39.
of the Circuit of Wales It needs to become more efficient - | :00:40. | :00:42.
the message from the companies top Finding a new use | :00:43. | :00:50.

here say Theresa May will bring The Home Secretary will be | :01:10. | :01:21.
the next Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, | :01:22. | :01:24.
taking up the post on Wednesday. The party's leader here, | :01:25. | :01:27.
Andrew RT Davies, says she has a wealth of experience | :01:28. | :01:31.
at the highest level of government and is best | :01:32. | :01:34.
placed to unify the party. Here's our political | :01:35. | :01:37.
editor Nick Servini. So, it's a summer coronation and not | :01:38. | :01:49.
the result of an autumn contest that will put Theresa May into Downing | :01:50. | :01:54.
Street. It's the latest twist in the political cycle that saw Andrea | :01:55. | :01:58.
Leadsom pulled out of the leadership contest, bringing clarity to a | :01:59. | :02:01.
fortnight of turbulence for the Tories. We were expecting the | :02:02. | :02:07.
Conservative leadership contest, like the Labour won, to form the | :02:08. | :02:10.
backdrop of the summer holidays. But such is the pace of politics at the | :02:11. | :02:14.
moment that the decision on one of them has already been made, before | :02:15. | :02:18.
the full holiday season swings into action hero in the Vale of | :02:19. | :02:25.
Glamorgan. -- here in the Vale. Therese organ will be the next Prime | :02:26. | :02:31.
Minister. This is a conservative constituency, so I caught up with | :02:32. | :02:35.
some of the Tory faithful. If there had been a contest, they would have | :02:36. | :02:39.
had a say. As it is, they are now just bystanders. In the wake of the | :02:40. | :02:43.
referendum result, almost half the country will feel quite relieved for | :02:44. | :02:50.
what happened. For them, it will be nice to have a Prime Minister who is | :02:51. | :02:53.
active and can throw herself straight into the job and do what is | :02:54. | :02:58.
best for the country. We are all pro Brexit now. The country has | :02:59. | :03:02.
committed to leaving, and we now have given get on with the job of | :03:03. | :03:06.
achieving that. She has to get on with the job of running the whole | :03:07. | :03:12.
country. The mandate we have need to run its course until 2020. If we had | :03:13. | :03:17.
a general election now, then to reason they could be accused of | :03:18. | :03:21.
playing party politics with the Labour Party so we can Jeremy Corbyn | :03:22. | :03:29.
in such a bad position. She has been a cabinet member for six years, but | :03:30. | :03:34.
not much is known about many of her wider views. One thing we do know is | :03:35. | :03:43.
that she now has a challenge as we negotiate our exit. I am honoured | :03:44. | :03:48.
and humbled turban chosen by the Conservative Party to become its | :03:49. | :03:54.
leader -- humbled to have been chosen. She commands respect and has | :03:55. | :04:00.
huge authority. I have been more than impressed at her ability to | :04:01. | :04:03.
assimilate information and really lead. On that basis, I think she | :04:04. | :04:08.
could be an excellent Prime Minister. To reason they will go | :04:09. | :04:13.
down well in traditional Tory heartland areas like this one. Even | :04:14. | :04:18.
among those who voted to leave the EU when she was four Remain. At an | :04:19. | :04:25.
incredibly turbulent political time, she is considered a safe pair of | :04:26. | :04:31.
hands. In his nearby fine, the leader of the Welsh Conservatives | :04:32. | :04:34.
and prominent Brexit campaign gave her his full support. I have | :04:35. | :04:38.
complete trust in to Reza May. She isn't one who says one thing to your | :04:39. | :04:44.
face and then change her mind and actually do the dirty on you. She | :04:45. | :04:49.
will be honest and decent in everything she does. She will Terry | :04:50. | :04:52.
as it is and she will tell you to your face as it is. -- she will tell | :04:53. | :05:00.
you as it is. To Reza May arrives on the horizon as Prime Minister. -- | :05:01. | :05:04.
-- Theresa May arrives as Prime Minister. | :05:05. | :05:09.
Live to Our Parliamentary Correspondent David | :05:10. | :05:10.
Quite a day indeed. It began with two came to depth in the race. It | :05:11. | :05:25.
was scheduled not to end until September. By lunchtime, there was | :05:26. | :05:29.
only Theresa May and by five o'clock she was the new leader of the | :05:30. | :05:33.
Conservative Party and David Cameron was packing his bags. He will leave | :05:34. | :05:37.
on Wednesday after Prime Minister's Questions. Even those who have been | :05:38. | :05:42.
less than enthusiastic supporters of Theresa May before now saying that | :05:43. | :05:48.
she is the way forward in terms of stability and uniting the party. As | :05:49. | :05:53.
said in the report, we don't know a great deal on her views on issues | :05:54. | :05:57.
beyond the Home Office. In her job there she has had to deal with Welsh | :05:58. | :06:04.
issues from time to time. From the mistakes over Welsh language ballot | :06:05. | :06:07.
papers, the police and crime commission it election is, the whole | :06:08. | :06:11.
debate over whether policing should be from Cardiff Bay or Westminster. | :06:12. | :06:18.
She has come firmly down on the side of opposition to devolving policing. | :06:19. | :06:26.
The word that comes up was detail. She's forensic in her approach to | :06:27. | :06:29.
negotiation, you can't go into a meeting with her unless you, too, | :06:30. | :06:36.
know the detail. Talking to MPs again today, you think that the way | :06:37. | :06:40.
that she operates behind-the-scenes in and and sherry, and flashy way | :06:41. | :06:45.
we'll actually be a great contrast to David Cameron as Prime Minister. | :06:46. | :06:51.
We'll have to find out whether watches proposing will mean a change | :06:52. | :06:56.
of direction in terms of the government's devolution policy and | :06:57. | :06:59.
how different she will be from her predecessor. That is the Tories. | :07:00. | :07:05.
Meanwhile, not an entirely quiet day for the Labour Party. There will be | :07:06. | :07:11.
an election. Jeremy Corbyn has been challenged by Angela Eagle. She is a | :07:12. | :07:16.
former member of his Shadow Cabinet who resigned two weeks ago. She may | :07:17. | :07:21.
be joined by the Pontypridd MP Owen Smith. He is trying to avert an | :07:22. | :07:29.
election coming he says, but there will now be a contest. Talking to | :07:30. | :07:34.
Labour MPs, they expect him to throw his hat into the ring later this | :07:35. | :07:39.
week. Keep us posted for the moment, thank you very much. Now the rest of | :07:40. | :07:47.
Developers behind a motor racing track in Ebbw Vale say they're | :07:48. | :07:52.
confident the Welsh Government will back the project this week, | :07:53. | :07:54.
allowing them to get on with developing the site. | :07:55. | :07:56.
A revised plan for the Circuit of Wales has been | :07:57. | :07:59.
It requires the taxpayer to underwrite half the ?375 million | :08:00. | :08:02.
cost of the project if it were to get into difficulty. | :08:03. | :08:05.
It's a critical week for Circuit of Wales. | :08:06. | :08:08.
A plan to build a racing track capable of hosting motorcycling's | :08:09. | :08:11.
Grand Prix, the Moto GP, a range of industrial premises | :08:12. | :08:16.
for the automotive sector and hotels, right next to the Valley | :08:17. | :08:23.
The idea is to attract big-name companies and the sports car | :08:24. | :08:31.
maker TDR has already announced its going to make | :08:32. | :08:33.
And this is where they planned to build the 3.5 mile track. | :08:34. | :08:37.
The circuit itself is part of a wider regeneration development, | :08:38. | :08:39.
The company claimed it could create 6000 jobs and attract 750,000 | :08:40. | :08:45.
visitors to this part of the valleys every year. | :08:46. | :08:51.
But the project needs Welsh government backing. | :08:52. | :08:54.
The most important thing for us this week is getting the confidence | :08:55. | :08:57.
and certainty from the Welsh government that allows | :08:58. | :09:00.
Of course there will still be things to talk about and I'm sure | :09:01. | :09:04.
there will be other negotiations, but what we are looking for is that | :09:05. | :09:07.
confidence and certainty that we can pass on to our suppliers investors, | :09:08. | :09:19.
An initial proposal requiring the entire ?335 million project | :09:20. | :09:25.
to be underwritten by the Welsh government if it ran into trouble, | :09:26. | :09:28.
A new plan has been put together which would reduce that | :09:29. | :09:42.
With Blaenau Gwent and Monmouthshire councils providing loans | :09:43. | :09:46.
worth ?90 million, around a quarter of the cost. | :09:47. | :09:48.
In all, the public purse would guarantee 75% of the total | :09:49. | :09:51.
The rest of the risk would be borne by the private sector. | :09:52. | :09:55.
The leader of Monmouthshire Council has said tonight that neither | :09:56. | :09:57.
they nor Blaenau Gwent council have yet agreed all backed the loans. | :09:58. | :10:00.
The economy secretary is due to make a decision this week, | :10:01. | :10:03.
before the assembly heads into summer recess. | :10:04. | :10:06.
It's a big call for the new minister so soon into taking | :10:07. | :10:09.
Who, back in April, was adamant that the risk | :10:10. | :10:18.
At lunchtime today, still discussing issues on this. | :10:19. | :10:25.
So it's important to recognise that we wanted to support this | :10:26. | :10:27.
project, we thought it would have been good. | :10:28. | :10:29.
But I'm not entitled to take the risk with our public money, | :10:30. | :10:32.
and I don't think the public would expect me to take that risk. | :10:33. | :10:35.
Now the Welsh government says it's always been clear that any support | :10:36. | :10:38.
provided by the taxpayer needs to be proportionate and fair. | :10:39. | :10:41.
It has also stressed that its door remains open if sufficient private | :10:42. | :10:44.
The question is whether that's the case. | :10:45. | :10:50.
A campaign to increase awareness of lung cancer symptoms, | :10:51. | :11:00.
particularly in the over 50s,has been launched by the NHS here. | :11:01. | :11:03.
It's one of our most common cancers, and the campaign is aimed | :11:04. | :11:06.
at increasing survival rates by diagnosing and treating | :11:07. | :11:08.
Devolved governments have said they must not lose out financially | :11:09. | :11:15.
Following a meeting in Cardiff, finance ministers from Wales, | :11:16. | :11:19.
Scotland and Northern Ireland said they should be included in the UK's | :11:20. | :11:22.
Voters in Scotland and Northern Ireland opted to Remain | :11:23. | :11:28.
in the referendum, while Wales voted to Leave. | :11:29. | :11:35.
The future of the Port Talbot steelworks can only be guaranteed | :11:36. | :11:37.
That's according to a senior executive at Tata Steel. | :11:38. | :11:43.
The company's in merger talks with the German firm Thyssenkrupp | :11:44. | :11:47.
after halting its sale for its Welsh sites, including Port Talbot. | :11:48. | :11:50.
Here's our business correspondent, Brian Meechan. | :11:51. | :11:59.
David Edwards is a steel worker at Port Talbot. He's been with Tata for | :12:00. | :12:07.
ten years. The company's decision to abandon sales at its Welsh plants | :12:08. | :12:11.
and focus on talks with Thyssenkrupp means uncertainty for workers | :12:12. | :12:15.
continues for longer. There isn't a timescale, they haven't said they | :12:16. | :12:23.
will put the on pause for X amount of time. If they put it on pause | :12:24. | :12:28.
for, I don't know, six months and then they decide they don't want is | :12:29. | :12:32.
any more, will be people who put bids in still be there? This local | :12:33. | :12:37.
pub has been serving a specially brewed ale. The community has thrown | :12:38. | :12:42.
its weight behind the campaign. Politicians are more divided on what | :12:43. | :12:46.
the new plans mean. The UK Government says the merger is good | :12:47. | :12:51.
news for workers and the future of Port Talbot. But Plaid Cymru says | :12:52. | :12:56.
that if it goes ahead, it will signal the death knell for the | :12:57. | :13:00.
industry. Some say the industry should be nationalised and begin the | :13:01. | :13:05.
sales process again if Tata doesn't give long-term commitment to Port | :13:06. | :13:10.
Talbot. Senior executives say the plant can and must become more | :13:11. | :13:18.
successful. I think we need a very quickly put our heads together and | :13:19. | :13:22.
find out very quickly and collaboratively the solutions, it | :13:23. | :13:26.
may be part of the larger enterprise. Losses have been reduced | :13:27. | :13:33.
at Port Talbot. The UK Government is offering financial support and | :13:34. | :13:45.
reform oft putter deficit. -- Tata's pension deficit. Interest has been | :13:46. | :13:54.
shown in the Dutch side of Tata, and not so much on the UK side. This | :13:55. | :13:59.
might be about consolidating the continental Europe side of the | :14:00. | :14:02.
business and not supporting the British side. What we need now are | :14:03. | :14:05.
guarantees from the British government and front at a steel that | :14:06. | :14:10.
there is a long-term, secure future based on real investment in the | :14:11. | :14:17.
British Steel industry. While the focus on an talks with Thyssenkrupp, | :14:18. | :14:22.
Tata are still prepared to look at kids, it is not satisfied with those | :14:23. | :14:24.
it currently has. -- bids. The D-Day landings | :14:25. | :14:30.
on the beaches of Normandy. Now France's highest honour | :14:31. | :14:34.
for a Cardiff grandmother, for her And the weather turning more settled | :14:35. | :14:36.
for the middle of the week. Wales is home to a rich array | :14:37. | :14:42.
of historic buildings, but many of them are in urgent need | :14:43. | :14:53.
of repair and restoration. According to the heritage body CADW | :14:54. | :14:56.
more than two and a half thousand 19 of those have just been included | :14:57. | :15:00.
in a register of the most vulnerable Tucked away on a side street, | :15:01. | :15:06.
this Edwardian Chapel has stood It's a Grade II star | :15:07. | :15:21.
listed building, but it's And it begs the age old question - | :15:22. | :15:25.
how do you breathe new life There are significant structures | :15:26. | :15:32.
in our towns and cities that Structures like this Gothic lodge | :15:33. | :15:35.
in the Vale of Glamorgan, and this 1940s Women's Land Army | :15:36. | :15:42.
Hostel in Flintshire. They're just two of the 19 listed | :15:43. | :15:46.
buildings in Wales that have been included in a new register | :15:47. | :15:49.
by the charity Save Britain's It's a snap shot of some the UK's | :15:50. | :15:53.
most endangered architectural gems. Finding new uses for buildings | :15:54. | :16:00.
is one of the key things that And by that I mean, economically | :16:01. | :16:03.
viable new uses. Sometimes that requires quite | :16:04. | :16:10.
a lot of imagination, and certainly a lot | :16:11. | :16:12.
of determination. And if you want proof | :16:13. | :16:15.
of that determination, just take a look at this miners' | :16:16. | :16:17.
welfare hall in Penrhiwceiber Built in 1913, its Grade II listed | :16:18. | :16:21.
facade remains intact. The library now houses a gym that | :16:22. | :16:25.
operates as a business. While downstairs, the old dance hall | :16:26. | :16:33.
has become a community boxing club. David Jones bought the building | :16:34. | :16:38.
for ?30,000 at auction last year. His grandfather was a miner | :16:39. | :16:43.
and he wanted to save this What we did notice, | :16:44. | :16:46.
is that there was no dry rot here. This is why I can't understand why | :16:47. | :16:52.
somebody didn't come So I'm just glad I bought | :16:53. | :17:00.
at the right time. Purchasing and preserving a listed | :17:01. | :17:04.
building isn't always cheap, although there is funding | :17:05. | :17:06.
available from a number But a warning from someone | :17:07. | :17:09.
who redesigns old buildings for a living - make sure | :17:10. | :17:14.
they have a fresh purpose. It's important to recognise that | :17:15. | :17:19.
you can't freeze time. Buildings have to change to meet | :17:20. | :17:21.
the desires and will So we have to find new uses | :17:22. | :17:24.
for old buildings. I'm all in favour of keeping | :17:25. | :17:29.
the best of the past, but I don't think it necessarily, | :17:30. | :17:31.
just because they're It can be a race against | :17:32. | :17:35.
time to save fading buildings like this one - | :17:36. | :17:42.
but across Wales many landmarks, great and small, | :17:43. | :17:45.
are in desperate need of new owners Ten members of a Rhondda drugs gang | :17:46. | :17:47.
have been sentenced to a total of 33 years in prison | :17:48. | :18:05.
at Cardiff crown court. Police recorded phone calls | :18:06. | :18:07.
between members of the gang and recovered nearly ?500,000 | :18:08. | :18:09.
worth of cocaine. A large quantity of it was found | :18:10. | :18:11.
in a house in Tonyrefail. The airline Virgin Atlantic has | :18:12. | :18:17.
signed a ?3.4 billion deal to buy 12 The aircraft, due for delivery | :18:18. | :18:20.
in 2019, will operate on routes The UK arm of Airbus employs 6 | :18:21. | :18:25.
thousand staff at its Broughton Nine out of 10 people in Wales want | :18:26. | :18:31.
drug or drink drivers who kill, Research by the road safety charity, | :18:32. | :18:40.
Brake found that 68% of people think drivers responsible for deaths | :18:41. | :18:47.
on the roads should be jailed Currently the average prison | :18:48. | :18:50.

in helping to liberate France 93-year-old Sylvia Wild | :19:03. | :19:05.

as Mrs Wild fought in my hometown. Without her, I don't think my family | :20:23. | :20:32.
or myself would exist. So I am very personally | :20:33. | :20:35.
grateful to her. Is this a photograph | :20:36. | :20:37.
of you, is it? That was in the back garden of our, | :20:38. | :20:40.

about her wartime experiences and working closely with a team that | :20:45. | :20:46.

there within a few hours. But, unfortunately, we were part | :20:57. | :21:00.
of the very big convoy. And then they found | :21:01. | :21:09.
that the Germans had laid bombs. We had to turn back and when we saw | :21:10. | :21:12.
the coastline, we thought Sylvia is thought to be just one | :21:13. | :21:19.
of three women in the UK to have been awarded this prestigious medal | :21:20. | :21:30.
for their involvement in D-Day. The success of the Welsh football | :21:31. | :21:34.

in the quarter finals, We can look forward to some sunshine | :22:11. | :22:12.
tomorrow, but first we have some showers to deal with tonight and | :22:13. | :22:29.
tomorrow morning. Tonight, we have some sunny spells | :22:30. | :22:39.
before sunset. Overnight, we'll start to see more showers from the | :22:40. | :22:43.
West. Some of those could be heavy. Quite a bit of cloud into tomorrow | :22:44. | :22:47.
morning, with misty patches. It is feeling cooler and fresher than the | :22:48. | :22:51.
past few nights. Temperatures ranging from 11 to 14 Celsius. Winds | :22:52. | :22:57.
easing as well. Tomorrow morning we have some showers first thing. | :22:58. | :23:01.
Behind the trough, some high pressure building which will settle | :23:02. | :23:05.
things down nicely. First thing tomorrow, if you showers lurking | :23:06. | :23:08.
around. Some sunshine in between. Pembrokeshire X gaping the worst of | :23:09. | :23:15.

charge of our weather. Thursday morning, some ploughed around. | :23:56. | :24:01.
Isolated showers, you would be unlucky to catch one. It's dry and | :24:02. | :24:04.
related through the day. Temperatures will range between 15 | :24:05. | :24:10.
and 17 Celsius. Cooler and fresher, less humid compared with last few | :24:11. | :24:15.
days. Towards the end of the week, more sunshine, fewer showers, | :24:16. | :24:19.
feeling less humid. By the weekend, more humid weather heading our way. | :24:20. | :24:23.
A reminder of the top stories this evening. | :24:24. | :24:25.
The Home Secretary, Theresa May, has been elected as the new leader | :24:26. | :24:28.
of the Conservative Party and will be the next Prime Minister | :24:29. | :24:30.
of the United Kingdom, taking up the post on Wednesday. | :24:31. | :24:33.
Her rival to become leader of the Conservative party, | :24:34. | :24:35.
Andrea Leadsom, withdrew from the contest this morning. | :24:36. | :24:43.
I am honoured and humbled to have been chosen by the Conservative | :24:44. | :24:50.
Party to become its leader. I would like to pay tribute to the other | :24:51. | :24:54.
candidates during the election campaign, and I would like to pay | :24:55. | :24:58.
tribute to Andrea Leadsom for the dignity that she has shown today. | :24:59. | :25:00.
The former shadow business secretary, Angela Eagle, | :25:01. | :25:02.
has formally launched her attempt to unseat the Labour leader, | :25:03. | :25:04.
Jeremy Corbyn, promising to save the party and heal Britain. | :25:05. | :25:08.
Mr Corbyn has said he'll fight any challenge. | :25:09. | :25:11.
Labour's National Executive Committee will decide tomorrow | :25:12. | :25:13.
whether or not he will automatically be on the ballot for the contest. | :25:14. | :25:19.
The Tories may play out there again thrones. | :25:20. | :25:23.
But they have nothing to offer on the question is this | :25:24. | :25:25.
We are at a crossroads, and I am ready to lead. | :25:26. | :25:36.
Let's get the thoughts of our Political Editor Nick Servini. | :25:37. | :25:47.
They used to say a week is a long time in politics, but now it's a | :25:48. | :25:51.
day. today's events will pan out | :25:52. | :25:52.
in coming days, weeks and months? Theresa May has broad support of the | :25:53. | :26:01.
Conservatives. From the senior figures, no one is going to | :26:02. | :26:04.
criticise her because she will be the next Prime Minister. In terms of | :26:05. | :26:08.
the rank and file, a bit annoyed that some of them not have their say | :26:09. | :26:11.
in the leadership contest. Overall, I think they accept incredibly | :26:12. | :26:18.
turbulent times and she will be a steady hand. You have to say, such | :26:19. | :26:23.
an extraordinary day, how events moved so quickly. People keep asking | :26:24. | :26:27.
me what she thinks of Wales. Sources is in the party say they believe it | :26:28. | :26:35.
will probably be quite a cautious approach to devolution, more | :26:36. | :26:38.
partnership rather than wholesale devolution of powers from | :26:39. | :26:42.
Westminster to Cardiff. She was instrumental in the police and crime | :26:43. | :26:46.
commissioners, which is a big reason why the Conservatives oppose | :26:47. | :26:52.
devolution to Wales in policing. Not so for the Labour Party? This will | :26:53. | :26:58.
trundle on throughout the summer. Angela Eagle started her campaign | :26:59. | :27:03.
today. The speculation is that Owen Smith, the Pontypridd MP, will enter | :27:04. | :27:08.
the race as well. They are likely to be up against Jeremy Corbyn, and | :27:09. | :27:12.
it's a real role of the dice. If those two don't win, they are back | :27:13. | :27:17.
to this huge problem of trying to hold the Labour Party together after | :27:18. | :27:21.
another leadership contest. Who would have thought that it could be | :27:22. | :27:26.
so divisive for the party, and people openly talking about the | :27:27. | :27:29.
possibility of the Labour Party spitting as a result of a contest. | :27:30. | :27:34.
Thank you very much. I'll be back with an update | :27:35. | :27:35.
at 8pm and again after That's Wales Today, thank | :27:36. | :27:38.
you for watching from all of us | :27:39. | :27:43. |
