250 jobs are lost in Port Talbot - after the engineering company - | :00:00. | :00:08.
Baby Ezra was born seven weeks early - his mum says he owes his life | :00:09. | :00:16.
to Glan Clwyd Hospital - now North Wales' Health Board | :00:17. | :00:21.
approves plans for a new neo-natal Unit there. | :00:22. | :00:31.
And supermarkets come under fire for what is called fake food. | :00:32. | :00:44.
A Port Talbot engineering firm which has supplied the steel | :00:45. | :00:48.
industry - including the town's TATA works - | :00:49. | :00:50.
for almost 40 years - has ceased trading. | :00:51. | :00:52.
250 people have lost their jobs since the company began facing | :00:53. | :00:56.
Our Economics Correspondent, Sarah Dickins, reports. | :00:57. | :01:02.
The machinery is silent after 37 years of working for Port | :01:03. | :01:07.
Fairwood Fabrications ceased trading a few | :01:08. | :01:10.
You own it and your father set it up a | :01:11. | :01:20.
My father passed away earlier this year. | :01:21. | :01:27.
Over the last four years we have put ?38 million in wages | :01:28. | :01:30.
alone and that is just in the last four years. | :01:31. | :01:36.
There was a future here, you know, it is heartbreaking. | :01:37. | :01:45.
Six months ago 250 worked here. | :01:46. | :01:47.
They carried out round-the-clock emergency | :01:48. | :01:56.
maintenance for TATA and were involved in building the new blast | :01:57. | :01:58.
The Swansea Bay tidal lagoon was what Fairwater hoped would keep | :01:59. | :02:02.
its metal fabrication business going but that is still on the drawing | :02:03. | :02:05.
This company has been caught in the vacuum of an industry which | :02:06. | :02:09.
is declining, steel, and one which is still trying | :02:10. | :02:11.
In January when Tata announced major cutbacks, this | :02:12. | :02:16.
company wrote to the Business Secretary Sajid Javid | :02:17. | :02:18.
Tata was devastating for the company. | :02:19. | :02:21.
It also suggested that the | :02:22. | :02:22.
Swansea Bay tidal lagoon was a way forward for this company | :02:23. | :02:25.
Well Tata is still in limbo and the tidal lagoon | :02:26. | :02:34.
The last 66 workers left as the gates | :02:35. | :02:38.
There are many companies in the area also affected by delays and | :02:39. | :02:42.
It is difficult to predict with any certainty | :02:43. | :02:47.
but clearly if there were | :02:48. | :02:49.
major projects such as the tidal lagoon going ahead on the doorstep | :02:50. | :02:55.
here, that could only be beneficial for Fairwoods and the supply chain | :02:56. | :02:59.
and manufacturing industry not only in Talbot but back | :03:00. | :03:02.
Many across private and public sectors are trying to hold tight, | :03:03. | :03:08.
waiting for a series of decisions to be made. | :03:09. | :03:15.
Plans for a new ?18 million pounds Neo-Natal Unit for North Wales have | :03:16. | :03:18.
moved a step closer - following approval | :03:19. | :03:20.
The unit would offer specialist care for premature and seriously-ill | :03:21. | :03:23.
It comes after proposals to temporarily remove | :03:24. | :03:28.
consultant-led Maternity Services from the hospital, were shelved. | :03:29. | :03:30.
Four week old Ezra Eeles owes his life to the medical staff | :03:31. | :03:40.
at Glan Clwyd hospital's special care baby unit. | :03:41. | :03:42.
Born seven weeks early he's just the sort of emergency case | :03:43. | :03:46.
the new Neo natal centre will specialise in. | :03:47. | :03:48.
His mum Clare from Llanddulas in Conwy says it will make a big | :03:49. | :03:51.
But it's not big enough, with the babies you can | :03:52. | :04:00.
see coming in and out, it definitely needs to be expanded. | :04:01. | :04:05.
neonatal intensive care centre some of the most seriously ill children | :04:06. | :04:11.
face the prospect of being treated many miles away | :04:12. | :04:13.
The full business case for the new project got the approval | :04:14. | :04:18.
of the Betsi Cadwaladr university health board at a meeting | :04:19. | :04:21.
We will have more cots and staff and be able to look | :04:22. | :04:32.
after more of those poorly BBC locally. | :04:33. | :04:38.
who'll need specialist care which will need | :04:39. | :04:47.
to go to mainly Liverpool and | :04:48. | :04:48.
England but even for them, we will be able to bring them back quicker. | :04:49. | :04:52.
But until recently there was turmoil at Glan Clwyd hospital with staff | :04:53. | :04:55.
shortages prompting the board to consider temporarily removing | :04:56. | :04:57.
Many people campaigned against the plan saying patients | :04:58. | :04:59.
would face long and stressful journeys to either Bangor | :05:00. | :05:02.
A purpose built neo-natal unit is what campaigners wanted | :05:03. | :05:06.
It has been identified since 1999 | :05:07. | :05:09.
that this unit has been needed and | :05:10. | :05:10.
it has been ignored and continued to | :05:11. | :05:12.
We have been through several consultations, discussions, | :05:13. | :05:15.
One plaid Cymru AM believes services at Bangor's Ysbty Gwynedd could be | :05:16. | :05:28.
There's been a constant under the radar drift of | :05:29. | :05:31.
For me that is not good enough for the | :05:32. | :05:37.
population I represent and I will make sure that | :05:38. | :05:39.
we maintain full services in all fields. | :05:40. | :05:45.
The full business plan of the ?18 million unit needs | :05:46. | :05:48.
the blessing of the Welsh Government before it can go ahead. | :05:49. | :05:50.
But once it does, it could be open by 2018. | :05:51. | :05:54.
Even before the controversy, campaigners here have long supported | :05:55. | :05:59.
the idea of a neonatal unit and now that idea | :06:00. | :06:02.
North Wales Police have charged a 25-year-old man | :06:03. | :06:10.
with the murder of a mother at her home in Penygroes. | :06:11. | :06:13.
22-year-old Emma Baum's body was discovered on Monday morning | :06:14. | :06:17.
in the back garden of the house she shared with her | :06:18. | :06:20.
David Nicholas Davies will appear before Caernarfon | :06:21. | :06:23.
New figures show there's been a 21% increase in the number of violent | :06:24. | :06:33.
crimes recorded in Wales - up by more than 9,000 | :06:34. | :06:36.
But the rise here was smaller than the 27% recorded | :06:37. | :06:39.
The Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has criticised his challenger - | :06:40. | :06:47.
Pontypridd MP Owen Smith - for what he describes | :06:48. | :06:49.
as the "slightly odd" way he resigned from the shadow cabinet. | :06:50. | :06:52.
Speaking at the official launch of his campaign | :06:53. | :06:54.
to retain the leadership, Mr Corbyn said Mr Smith quit - | :06:55. | :06:57.
despite telling him he was happy in his top-team and wanted to stay. | :06:58. | :07:03.
Owen Smith was in the shadow cabinet until two weeks ago. | :07:04. | :07:09.
He came to see me to say he was happy in | :07:10. | :07:11.
the shadow cabinet and wanted to stay there and then left the meeting | :07:12. | :07:14.
and resigned which was a slightly odd thing to do. | :07:15. | :07:17.
But he of course - he is very welcome | :07:18. | :07:19.
to come back and I hope he would. | :07:20. | :07:24.
Well, Owen Smith disputes Mr Corbyn's account of the meeting, | :07:25. | :07:27.
Speaking to our Parliamentary Correspondent, David Cornock, | :07:28. | :07:31.
Mr Smith also denied he is anti-devolution. | :07:32. | :07:35.
The former shadow Welsh secretary said he wanted First Minister, | :07:36. | :07:39.
Carwyn Jones, to play a bigger role in Labour at Westminster. | :07:40. | :07:43.
Carwyn knows me well and he knows that isn't true. | :07:44. | :07:45.
I am also someone who has to think what we have to hold in | :07:46. | :07:59.
common, ways to hold the UK together so I | :08:00. | :08:02.
have said for example, in the | :08:03. | :08:03.
Labour party, the leader of our party in Wales should be much | :08:04. | :08:13.
decisions being taken in Westminster. | :08:14. | :08:16.
I would have Carwyn Jones alongside other leaders from | :08:17. | :08:18.
the Metropolitan bits of England's and the leader in Scotland sitting | :08:19. | :08:26.
regularly as a regional shadow national shadow cabinet to make big | :08:27. | :08:29.
areas where there is not about defence and economic | :08:30. | :08:37.
responsibility not only in Wales but where there is clear interest | :08:38. | :08:40.
This year's Royal Welsh Show in Llanelwedd came to a close today - | :08:41. | :08:44.
with final attendance figures 2% lower than last year. | :08:45. | :08:46.
Around 236,000 people visited over the four days - | :08:47. | :08:48.
A spokesperson for the show pointed out that many schools didn't | :08:49. | :08:52.
break-up until Wednesday - which could explain | :08:53. | :08:53.
Some of the best of Welsh produce has been on display | :08:54. | :09:02.
But some supermarkets have come under-fire at the Royal Welsh | :09:03. | :09:07.
Some people say the packaging - using fake farm names - | :09:08. | :09:17.
make people think they're buying British, when they're not. | :09:18. | :09:19.
Woodside and Boswell farms, some of the fake farm names used by | :09:20. | :09:23.
They sound British but are actually from Ireland and Denmark. | :09:24. | :09:32.
The NFU say this is misleading consumers and it is unacceptable. | :09:33. | :09:35.
We do not want consumers to be misled. | :09:36. | :09:36.
We have commissioned a survey which shows that over 60% have been | :09:37. | :09:39.
There is now a strong letter going to the National Trading | :09:40. | :09:44.
Tesco are not the only supermarket to do this, | :09:45. | :09:49.
Aldi have now decided to use only British meat in | :09:50. | :09:55.
So that people can buy their favourite food all | :09:56. | :10:06.
But how confused are consumers about where these kinds of | :10:07. | :10:15.
We are going to conduct our very own unscientific | :10:16. | :10:19.
We choose the cheapest to be honest because we're on a budget. | :10:20. | :10:26.
I think it is cheating people but there is | :10:27. | :10:28.
nothing on there to say it is | :10:29. | :10:30.
How to get more people to buy the food | :10:31. | :10:38.
It has been a hot topic for the show ground this | :10:39. | :10:43.
week but with household budgets stretched, will shoppers vote with | :10:44. | :10:45.
The deal for an American consortium to buy a controlling stake of 60% | :10:46. | :10:54.
in Swansea City Football Club has been completed. | :10:55. | :10:56.
The US investors Jason Levien and Steve Kaplan - | :10:57. | :10:59.
who lead the group - confirmed the deal in | :11:00. | :11:01.
Swansea Supporters Trust retain a 21% shareholding in the club. | :11:02. | :11:09.
Staying with football - and ALL the Welsh Premier League | :11:10. | :11:11.
sides have now been eliminated from Europe - after FK Vojvodina | :11:12. | :11:15.
beat Gap Connah's Quay in tonight's Europa League qualifier. | :11:16. | :11:18.
A double from captain Dejan Meleg made it 2-1 - | :11:19. | :11:22.
Let's get the weather forecast now - any more | :11:23. | :11:30.
sunshine on the way, Behnaz? | :11:31. | :11:34.
Yes, more sunshine on offer. Sunny spells as you go through tomorrow | :11:35. | :11:45.
with the potential for patchy rain, especially in the West. A few | :11:46. | :11:50.
isolated showers babe laments of clouds temperatures will range | :11:51. | :11:59.
between 13 and 17 Celsius. We have this weather front of being quite a | :12:00. | :12:04.
lot of cloud with it and drain as well. High-pressure not far away the | :12:05. | :12:17.
dry start for rush hour. We do have a few showers ahead of this but a | :12:18. | :12:21.
lot of dry weather to look forward to. The best of the dry and warm | :12:22. | :12:28.
weather the further south and east you are. The sunshine is strong | :12:29. | :12:35.
enough to break through the cloud so it will be pleasant when the sun | :12:36. | :12:40.
gets out with highs of 18 to 24 Celsius. Tomorrow night, some | :12:41. | :12:47.
evening sunshine to look forward to with a few isolated showers. | :12:48. | :12:51.
Temperatures will be comfortable overnight, ranging up to 16 Celsius. | :12:52. | :12:58.
Westerly winds will bring fresh air for the weekend. Saturday will be | :12:59. | :13:03.
the best day in terms of sunshine. Still the risk of isolated showers, | :13:04. | :13:09.
especially along the coast. All change on Sunday. Cloud and rain | :13:10. | :13:14.
spreading in from the south-west. Back to you. | :13:15. | :13:16.
We'll be back with updates in Breakfast from around | :13:17. | :13:18.
From all of us on the late team, thanks for watching. | :13:19. | :13:23.
Nos da. Goodnight. | :13:24. | :13:29. |
