Here on BBC One it's time for the news where you are. | :00:00. | :00:00.
As Bridgend Ford cuts production, the Economy Secretary warns any | :00:00. | :00:08.
Brexit deal must secure access to the single market. | :00:09. | :00:11.
40 years after Janet Commins was killed, Stephen Huff appears | :00:12. | :00:14.
in court charged with her rape and murder, and more | :00:15. | :00:17.
And the revolutionary blood test developed by scientists | :00:18. | :00:22.
at Swansea University that could detect one of the most deadly | :00:23. | :00:25.
The car industry employs 18,000 people in Wales and it needs | :00:26. | :00:48.
a Brexit deal that secures it access to the single market. | :00:49. | :00:50.
That's the demand from the Economy Secretary tonight, | :00:51. | :00:52.
following Ford's announcement that it's slashing production | :00:53. | :00:54.
Ken Skates says he also wants promises from the car-maker | :00:55. | :01:00.
about the security of 500 jobs there, which was a condition | :01:01. | :01:04.
of the ?15 million of state aid the Welsh Government | :01:05. | :01:06.
Workers at the plant are after reassurance too, | :01:07. | :01:12.
as our business correspondent, Brian Meechan reports. | :01:13. | :01:17.
Despite assurances from Ford that no-one will lose their jobs, | :01:18. | :01:20.
there was concern as shifts changed this afternoon. | :01:21. | :01:23.
I think the majority of people think it is going in 2018/2020. | :01:24. | :01:30.
That's the way it's looking, and that's the rumours. | :01:31. | :01:32.
Personally keeping an open mind on it. | :01:33. | :01:35.
We'll just have to wait and see what transpires and hopefully it | :01:36. | :01:38.
In a letter to staff seen by this programme, | :01:39. | :01:42.
Ford blames lower global demand for the new petrol engine | :01:43. | :01:46.
for its decision to almost halve its investment at Bridgend. | :01:47. | :01:49.
It's left some concern that the company isn't | :01:50. | :01:51.
That's not the case, according to this firm, | :01:52. | :01:56.
This company near Neath is an engineering company | :01:57. | :02:01.
and tool-makers that's part of the booming UK | :02:02. | :02:04.
It's grown 50% in the last three years and now employs | :02:05. | :02:09.
Bosses here reject claims that Ford is ready to abandon | :02:10. | :02:15.
I think it's a very competitive sector. | :02:16. | :02:20.
It's a sector where we all need to show continual | :02:21. | :02:23.
and accelerating innovation so, no, that doesn't concern me | :02:24. | :02:26.
This is a major, major investment for the long term coming | :02:27. | :02:32.
But the problem for Bridgend is clear. | :02:33. | :02:36.
This time last year, workers were celebrating the news | :02:37. | :02:39.
that they'd secured the contract to manufacture 250,000 | :02:40. | :02:42.
of the new Dragon petrol engines anually, starting in 2018. | :02:43. | :02:48.
of the new Dragon petrol engines annually, starting in 2018. | :02:49. | :02:50.
It secured hundreds of jobs but it meant that Bridgend would only be | :02:51. | :02:54.
making a third of the engines it does now. | :02:55. | :02:56.
A year on, and it emerges that Ford will produce 125,000 Dragon engines, | :02:57. | :02:59.
only half of those previously planned, from 2018. | :03:00. | :03:05.
The Welsh Government argues that uncertainty resulting from Brexit | :03:06. | :03:08.
What we need from the UK Government is a firm commitment | :03:09. | :03:15.
to access to the free market in order to create stability | :03:16. | :03:19.
It's no good having fluctuations in terms of the value of sterling. | :03:20. | :03:24.
We need sterling to be steady in terms of its value. | :03:25. | :03:29.
But of course the low value of the pound following the vote | :03:30. | :03:32.
to leave the EU has benefits for firms as well. | :03:33. | :03:35.
People want to mix it up in the Brexit argument | :03:36. | :03:38.
but the currency fluctuates all the time, and from an exporter's | :03:39. | :03:40.
point of view it is very good to be able to sell your goods abroad | :03:41. | :03:44.
and actually some of these engines do go abroad to Ford's plants | :03:45. | :03:48.
on the Continent, in Europe, and so it actually puts the plant | :03:49. | :03:51.
It's clear that Ford Bridgend needs to get back to the drawing board | :03:52. | :03:56.
While Brexit may not be responsible for the decision to scale back | :03:57. | :04:00.
production now, how we trade with the world after it | :04:01. | :04:03.
will have an impact on the plant's ability to bring in that work. | :04:04. | :04:10.
A man has appeared in court in Llandudno accused of raping | :04:11. | :04:13.
and murdering a teenage schoolgirl 40 years ago. | :04:14. | :04:16.
15-year-old Janet Commins, from Flint, died in January 1976. | :04:17. | :04:21.
Now Stephen Huff is charged with sexually assaulting | :04:22. | :04:24.
and killing her, as well as more recent sex offences. | :04:25. | :04:27.
Stephen Huff was brought to court today from police custody. | :04:28. | :04:34.
He was charged yesterday with committing five offences | :04:35. | :04:37.
From 1976, he's accused of murder, rape and a serious sexual offence. | :04:38. | :04:43.
In February this year, he's charged with rape | :04:44. | :04:48.
The hearing before district judge Gwyn Jones lasted | :04:49. | :04:53.
Stephen Huff spoke to confirm his name, age and address in Flint. | :04:54. | :04:59.
As he was remanded in custody, he was asked whether he understood | :05:00. | :05:02.
ARCHIVE: Police and forensic experts have been combing every square inch | :05:03. | :05:10.
of the school playground today, where the body of pretty 15-year-old | :05:11. | :05:13.
The killing of the schoolgirl 40 years ago made headline news. | :05:14. | :05:20.
It became a major police investigation, involving dozens | :05:21. | :05:23.
of officers who took thousands of statements. | :05:24. | :05:26.
One senior officer appeared on BBC Wales Today, in an attempt to speak | :05:27. | :05:30.
This girl had been sexually assaulted and she did | :05:31. | :05:39.
After nearly three weeks a man was charged and then | :05:40. | :05:45.
subsequently jailed after he admitted manslaughter. | :05:46. | :05:51.
In a statement, North Wales Police have said Stephen Huff was not | :05:52. | :05:54.
charged in their original investigation. | :05:55. | :05:55.
He was remanded in custody until tomorrow, when he will appear | :05:56. | :05:57.
Three health boards in Wales have been placed under an increased level | :05:58. | :06:03.
of scrutiny and control by the Welsh Government over | :06:04. | :06:05.
doubts about their ability to tackle their challenges. | :06:06. | :06:08.
Cardiff and the Vale, Abertawe Bro Morgannwg and Hywel Dda | :06:09. | :06:11.
health boards now face what is known as "targeted intervention". | :06:12. | :06:15.
That's one level lower than special measures. | :06:16. | :06:20.
An agricultural machinery company says it's closing | :06:21. | :06:24.
its North Pembrokeshire base because of the difficulties | :06:25. | :06:26.
Up to 20 people work at the Riverlea depot in Crymych. | :06:27. | :06:30.
Owners say staff will be offered posts at their other branch | :06:31. | :06:33.
Scientists at Swansea University have developed a revolutionary blood | :06:34. | :06:43.
test which could detect one of the most deadly forms of cancer | :06:44. | :06:45.
It's hoped the test could be in widespread use within five years, | :06:46. | :06:51.
So this is a blood sample here and you can see the mutant red | :06:52. | :06:58.
blood cells are under this light here... | :06:59. | :07:00.
Professor Gareth Jenkins and his PhD student Rachel Lawrence have been | :07:01. | :07:03.
studying the blood of oesophageal cancer patients and noticed | :07:04. | :07:05.
interesting differences with the blood of healthy people. | :07:06. | :07:08.
And anything under this line we would class as a mutant cell... | :07:09. | :07:12.
They believe they've made a significant breakthrough | :07:13. | :07:14.
here in Swansea, which means this particular cancer could now be | :07:15. | :07:17.
We've been asking the question, do cancer patients, patients | :07:18. | :07:23.
with oesophageal cancer, have elevated levels of these mutations? | :07:24. | :07:27.
We have shown in a pilot study we've been doing for the last | :07:28. | :07:30.
four years that they do, so this offers the promise | :07:31. | :07:32.
that we could, in the future, detect an undiagnosed cancer patient | :07:33. | :07:37.
at an earlier stage purely from taking a blood sample | :07:38. | :07:41.
and measuring the number of these mutated red blood cells. | :07:42. | :07:46.
Currently the test for this cancer involves an invasive and costly use | :07:47. | :07:51.
of an endoscope, but simply testing blood instead means the disease can | :07:52. | :07:55.
Cancer Research Wales believe that has the potential to save lives. | :07:56. | :08:05.
Early diagnosis of cancer generally is critical because Wales actually | :08:06. | :08:07.
suffers from late diagnosis and it's a major reason why Wales suffers | :08:08. | :08:10.
And so a blood-based test that can actually detect cancers earlier | :08:11. | :08:17.
is very welcome, particularly for something like oesophageal | :08:18. | :08:22.
cancer that has poor five-year survival rates. | :08:23. | :08:26.
The Swansea researchers have likened their technique to a smoke | :08:27. | :08:29.
detector that warns of fire, as this test warns doctors | :08:30. | :08:32.
They hope it could also be developed for other cancers, too. | :08:33. | :08:37.
They now need to conduct a larger validation study but they're | :08:38. | :08:40.
confident their simple test could be in widespread use within five years. | :08:41. | :08:47.
So, it's official the Wales coach Warren Gatland will lead the British | :08:48. | :08:51.
and Irish Lions for next year's tour of New Zealand. | :08:52. | :08:53.
His role with Wales will be filled by Rob Howley for the season, | :08:54. | :08:56.
which will see the national side play four autumn internationals, | :08:57. | :08:59.
the Six Nations and a tour of the Pacific Islands. | :09:00. | :09:02.
But tonight Gatland has warned that some high-profile players will miss | :09:03. | :09:05.
out on selection for Wales if they ply their trade | :09:06. | :09:08.
The head coach for the 2017 British and Irish Lions tour | :09:09. | :09:17.
There was really no need for the big introduction today. | :09:18. | :09:22.
Warren Gatland getting the top job was the worst-kept secret in sport. | :09:23. | :09:25.
But before heading to New Zealand, a warning to the Welsh | :09:26. | :09:30.
Some, he said, won't be picked for the national side in future. | :09:31. | :09:37.
There's going to be a couple of big-name players missing out | :09:38. | :09:44.
on the autumn, they will not be involved in the squad, | :09:45. | :09:47.
and that will be quite dramatic, and perhaps the Six Nations, | :09:48. | :09:49.
Everyone's been questioning whether we're going to stick | :09:50. | :09:53.
with that policy and I can guarantee that's going to happen. | :09:54. | :09:55.
The Welsh Rugby Union has worked hard to stop the stem of Welsh | :09:56. | :09:58.
Jonathan Davies is one who's returned home recently. | :09:59. | :10:02.
Only players who play in Wales will be considered for national | :10:03. | :10:05.
selection, with only three wildcard places available to those who play | :10:06. | :10:09.
This man will help enforce that rule. | :10:10. | :10:14.
With Gatland gone for a time, Rob Howley takes temporary charge, | :10:15. | :10:18.
as he did four years ago, when he guided Wales | :10:19. | :10:21.
It's a great opportunity for Warren to probably undertake the biggest | :10:22. | :10:29.
challenge in world rugby, and when he comes back to us in ten | :10:30. | :10:32.
months' time, I'd have thought he will be a better | :10:33. | :10:35.
Gatland led the Lions to success in Australia three years ago but no | :10:36. | :10:40.
Lions side has won a series in New Zealand since 1971. | :10:41. | :10:45.
It's been made more difficult as players will be involved | :10:46. | :10:48.
in the finale of the domestic season the week before | :10:49. | :10:51.
The playing season this year, if you go on the Lions tour as well, | :10:52. | :10:57.
is going to be about 11 months, so it's all about player welfare, | :10:58. | :11:01.
who can best recover the quickest, because everybody's going to want | :11:02. | :11:04.
a pound of flesh, really, from the WRU from a Welsh | :11:05. | :11:07.
He flies tomorrow to New Zealand to start preparing, aiming | :11:08. | :11:15.
to conquer the All Blacks - something he's failed | :11:16. | :11:17.
to achieve in ten attempts during his time with Wales. | :11:18. | :11:23.
Time for the forecast, and we need to keep our brollies | :11:24. | :11:26.
That would be a good idea, but today was a lovely day, with temperatures | :11:27. | :11:39.
at 26 as a high. The average for September is around 16 so we did | :11:40. | :11:44.
very well indeed. Feeling fresher tomorrow, less humid, with sunny | :11:45. | :11:48.
spells as well. A cold weather front tonight brings patchy rain in from | :11:49. | :11:53.
the West with the odd heavy burst likely on Snowdonia. Temperatures | :11:54. | :12:01.
12-16. The cold weather front will clear through tomorrow morning and a | :12:02. | :12:04.
brief break behind it, but another weather front brings more rain as we | :12:05. | :12:08.
head into tomorrow night. First thing tomorrow, a blustery start and | :12:09. | :12:14.
we have that front clearing through. Behind it, it brightens up with a | :12:15. | :12:18.
few showers, remaining blustery throughout the day, with those | :12:19. | :12:22.
south-westerly winds. The further south and east you are, the drier | :12:23. | :12:26.
and brighter it is, with that rain band pushing into England and | :12:27. | :12:30.
Scotland, and behind it, some rain pushing into Northern Ireland. Some | :12:31. | :12:35.
sunny spells to look forward to tomorrow afternoon with the risk of | :12:36. | :12:39.
a few showers. There's temperatures ranging between 18 and 20 with brisk | :12:40. | :12:45.
south-westerly winds. The next weather system comes in tomorrow | :12:46. | :12:48.
night, bringing more rain from the south-west, but the rain will push | :12:49. | :12:52.
through quickly thanks to the wind, and a fairly mild night. It will | :12:53. | :12:59.
feel muggy again as we head into Friday. The rain cleared through | :13:00. | :13:02.
first thing on Friday morning with sunny spells to look forward to. If | :13:03. | :13:07.
you catch a shower, it could be heavy, but most of us will get a dry | :13:08. | :13:13.
day, with highs of 17-20. A wet start to Saturday but the rain band | :13:14. | :13:17.
should clear through by the afternoon and it will brighten up. | :13:18. | :13:20.
Looking much better for the second part of the weekend. | :13:21. | :13:23.
We're back with updates into Breakfast from around | :13:24. | :13:27.
From all of us on the programme, a very good night. | :13:28. | :13:32. |
