Welcome to all Wales today. Our headlines: The teacher from Swansea | :00:09. | :00:14.
stopped from entering the US on a school trip. Tonight, still no | :00:15. | :00:17.
explanation. And a jealous man who murdered his | :00:18. | :00:21.
girlfriend after getting paranoid about her being unfaithful is jailed | :00:22. | :00:22.
for life. A teacher from Swansea says | :00:23. | :00:34.
he's still waiting for answers after he was removed from a flight | :00:35. | :00:37.
to New York while on a school trip. 25-year-old Juhel Miah, who teaches | :00:38. | :00:42.
at Llangatwg Community School in Neath, was flying from Reykjavik | :00:43. | :00:46.
in Iceland to the United States when The First Minister Carwyn Jones has | :00:47. | :00:49.
written to the Foreign Secretary asking him to pursue the matter | :00:50. | :00:54.
urgently with US authorities. I can't believe this is happening. | :00:55. | :01:14.
It's dreadful. Honestly, I feel like a criminal. | :01:15. | :01:21.
The thoughts of Juhel Miah, recorded on his phone at the airport in recce | :01:22. | :01:24.
you make after he was escorted off a plane with no explanation. It was | :01:25. | :01:28.
supposed to be a once-in-a-lifetime school trip, but having spent a few | :01:29. | :01:34.
days in Iceland, Mr Miah was randomly selected for a security | :01:35. | :01:38.
check at the airport before a flight to the US. | :01:39. | :01:41.
They took me into a room with about five or six officials. I noticed | :01:42. | :01:44.
that two of them were checking me, so one put me on a stool, I took my | :01:45. | :01:50.
jacket and bag off. They checked me thoroughly, and then I had to take | :01:51. | :01:53.
off my hoodie. I had a school hoodie on at the time, site about. They | :01:54. | :01:58.
checked me, and took my shoes off. After they do that, they got a swab | :01:59. | :02:01.
and rub it all over me. Having eventually boarded the flight | :02:02. | :02:09.
for the Big Apple, it was in front of 39 pupils from the school that Mr | :02:10. | :02:15.
Miah was confronted by a homeland security official and asked to leave | :02:16. | :02:17.
the plane. I have just been kicked off the | :02:18. | :02:23.
plane. Surprise, surprise. My bag is already off the plane. And now I am | :02:24. | :02:27.
just waiting. This height pleading with officials as to why this was | :02:28. | :02:32.
happening, Mr Miah received no clear answers. | :02:33. | :02:35.
As soon as she said, I'm not allowed on the plane, and allowed access to | :02:36. | :02:39.
New York I asked why? I explained I had my Visa in my bag and every | :02:40. | :02:43.
document needed. They could not give me an explanation. I asked the | :02:44. | :02:46.
question more than once they could not give me an explanation. | :02:47. | :02:50.
After he was taken off the flight, Mr Miah then return to the UK the | :02:51. | :02:54.
following day alone. He told me he has had no answers as to why he was | :02:55. | :03:00.
removed from the flight to New York. Neath Port Talbot council says it | :03:01. | :03:03.
has written to the US embassy to express its dismay at the treatment | :03:04. | :03:08.
of Mr Miah. The incidents has even caught the attention of the First | :03:09. | :03:10.
Minister. In a letter to Boris Johnson, Carwyn Jones urges the | :03:11. | :03:15.
Foreign Secretary to pursue the matter is with the US authorities. | :03:16. | :03:19.
In his letter, Mr Jones states their British passport holders should not | :03:20. | :03:23.
be affected by the US government's travel ban, adding: | :03:24. | :03:38.
Clearly, we have had Donald Trump's decision in the US about Muslims | :03:39. | :03:45.
travelling into the US, and although that policy has been suspended, it | :03:46. | :03:47.
seems to be pretty likely that this may be a consequence of that. | :03:48. | :03:52.
But the US embassy in the White House have been asked to comment. | :03:53. | :03:55.
Back at the school in Neath, Mr Miah says he would like to travel to the | :03:56. | :04:00.
US one day, but for now, he continues to wait for answers as to | :04:01. | :04:03.
why on this occasion he was treated differently to everyone else. | :04:04. | :04:05.
A barman has been jailed for life for murdering his wealthy Chinese | :04:06. | :04:07.
girlfriend who moved to Britain to improve her education. | :04:08. | :04:10.
Cardiff Crown Court heard how 24-year-old Xixi Bi was killed | :04:11. | :04:16.
by Jordan Matthews in a vicious and prolonged attack. | :04:17. | :04:18.
Judge Nicola Davies said it was the "tragic culmination" | :04:19. | :04:22.
of a course of physical and verbal abuse over a number of months. | :04:23. | :04:25.
Clever, beautiful, and much loved by her family back in China, Xixi Bi | :04:26. | :04:41.
was studying for a Masters degree in the Welsh capital. The 24-year-old | :04:42. | :04:45.
had started a relationship with Barman Jordan Matthews. She showered | :04:46. | :04:49.
him with gifts, bought him a car, and paid the rent in their flat in | :04:50. | :04:54.
the city. But the relationship became abusive, and the court heard | :04:55. | :04:58.
he regularly beaten until one attack in August last year resulted in a | :04:59. | :05:03.
murder. The court heard Xixi suffered 41 injuries including | :05:04. | :05:07.
broken ribs and a broken jaw. She also had healing fractures from | :05:08. | :05:10.
alleged previous attacks. The court heard how a weapon similar to a | :05:11. | :05:15.
steel rod was used. Tee's deficit is the latest case in an | :05:16. | :05:19.
ever-increasing problem here. In the year ending March 2016, there were | :05:20. | :05:23.
11 murders -- 18 murders resulting from domestic abuse in Wales. In | :05:24. | :05:27.
total, thousands of incidents were recorded here, but just over 6000 | :05:28. | :05:31.
cases resulted in a prosecution. Across the UK, the British crime | :05:32. | :05:36.
survey revealed 1.2 million women were victims of domestic abuse, but | :05:37. | :05:39.
the vast majority did not contact the police. Prime Minister to Reza | :05:40. | :05:46.
me has vowed to directly oversee the location telling creation of laws to | :05:47. | :05:50.
deal with the problem. The government is creating Deloitte | :05:51. | :05:52.
consulting experts to find out what should be included in any new act. | :05:53. | :05:56.
We don't know yet what this act will be an whether it will have Wales | :05:57. | :06:00.
within that. From our perspective, what we would like to see is a lot | :06:01. | :06:04.
of work being done around preventing domestic abuse and sexual violence | :06:05. | :06:10.
to begin with, so that would mean work in schools and the round | :06:11. | :06:13.
education with young people and children, but also work in community | :06:14. | :06:16.
to allow women to access support when and where they need it. | :06:17. | :06:21.
In the case of Xixi Bi, there was evidence of previous attacks and | :06:22. | :06:24.
hospital visits for months before she died. Matthews has pleaded | :06:25. | :06:28.
guilty manslaughter, but the jury decided he had murdered his | :06:29. | :06:31.
girlfriend. Sentencing Matthews to life, the judge Nick Davies told | :06:32. | :06:36.
them, over a period of months, you regularly subjected her to abuse. | :06:37. | :06:39.
The murder, she said, was the tragic, nation of physical and | :06:40. | :06:44.
verbal conduct, gratuitous violence, to which she had no defence. She | :06:45. | :06:50.
said he should serve a minimum of 18 years before being considered for | :06:51. | :06:51.
parole. A couple from south Wales have been | :06:52. | :06:54.
found murdered in South Africa. The bodies of Christine Solik, | :06:55. | :06:57.
who was originally from Mountain Ash, and her husband Roger | :06:58. | :07:01.
were found 50 miles Police in South Africa believe | :07:02. | :07:03.
they were kidnapped from their home Labour has launched an investigation | :07:04. | :07:10.
after complaints were made about the conduct of members | :07:11. | :07:27.
involved in a row over changing Llangennech primary school | :07:28. | :07:30.
to Welsh-medium education only. It's been suggested a Labour | :07:31. | :07:32.
councillor shared social media material by the far-right group | :07:33. | :07:34.
Britain First. Tegwen Devichand, who's | :07:35. | :07:35.
Labour's deputy group leader at Carmarthenshire Council, | :07:36. | :07:37.
says she doesn't remember A ?15 million discount | :07:38. | :07:39.
travel scheme for young people that was axed | :07:40. | :07:45.
by the Welsh Government Ministers had been criticised | :07:46. | :07:47.
for scrapping My Travel Pass, which gives sixteen to eighteen year | :07:48. | :07:50.
olds a third off bus travel. It will now continue | :07:51. | :07:57.
beyond April until a new More TV dramas, comedy programmes | :07:58. | :07:59.
and entertainment shows will be coming to your screen | :08:00. | :08:06.
after the BBC announced it's increasing the amount it spends | :08:07. | :08:11.
on its output in Wales The money will also be used | :08:12. | :08:23.
to improve news services as well as its online | :08:24. | :08:27.
and mobile services. But it falls short of | :08:28. | :08:29.
the ?30 million extra that some politicians | :08:30. | :08:31.
and lobbyists called for. I think it has been a long time | :08:32. | :08:37.
coming. We welcome any investment, and we look forward to a 50% | :08:38. | :08:42.
investment being spent here in Wales new programming. But we would say | :08:43. | :08:45.
it's all sort of the ?30 million a year increase that we wanted to see. | :08:46. | :08:48.
Test we would say it all sort. Fire officers say they hope | :08:49. | :08:49.
the conviction of a former safety consultant who gave "valueless | :08:50. | :08:52.
advice" will help bring in new rules An investigation into Brian Fakir | :08:53. | :08:55.
began after fires at charity shops Today he was given a six-month | :08:56. | :08:58.
suspended sentence for failing to carry out proper risk assessments | :08:59. | :09:02.
at four other shops in South Wales. Fire crews were amazed no one was | :09:03. | :09:22.
killed here at Pontypool and 2014. A charity shop gutted, flat above | :09:23. | :09:25.
destroyed. Just months later, another Saint Davids Hospice shop | :09:26. | :09:29.
was also destroyed by fire in nearby Newbridge. No one was prosecuted, | :09:30. | :09:34.
but a wider investigation began. This is Brian Fakir. The charity | :09:35. | :09:45.
paid him thousands to give fire risk assessment is that their shops. They | :09:46. | :09:47.
relied on his assessment being full and frank, but they went. He failed | :09:48. | :09:54.
in his duties 13. This was a shop here set in Aberdare. Escape route | :09:55. | :09:57.
blocked, no appropriate fire alarm fitted. He didn't even record that | :09:58. | :10:01.
this basement existed as part of the shop he assessed in Blackwood, never | :10:02. | :10:04.
mind any other fire prevention measures. The judge handed Mr Fakir | :10:05. | :10:11.
a six month suspended jail sentence and ordered that he complete 180 | :10:12. | :10:15.
hours' community service will stop he told them, your assessments | :10:16. | :10:18.
failed to address the most obvious risks. It seems to me, he said, they | :10:19. | :10:23.
were valueless. He'll so told the court it was jaw-dropping that | :10:24. | :10:26.
anyone can set themselves up as a consultant and give fire safety | :10:27. | :10:29.
advice without having any formal qualifications. The Fire Service | :10:30. | :10:36.
hope this will help them in their campaign to change the rules. | :10:37. | :10:38.
It is a vital piece of legislation. The skill sets and the experience | :10:39. | :10:44.
required to identify the risks, and we are talking about potential loss | :10:45. | :10:47.
of life and serious injury in the results of fire. We have to have | :10:48. | :10:51.
people qualified and experienced to undertake that work. | :10:52. | :10:55.
Saint David's Hospice has refurbished the shop and has also | :10:56. | :10:58.
had to spend tens of thousands of pounds reassessing all its | :10:59. | :11:03.
properties. The Fire Service is now urging other customers of Mr Fakir | :11:04. | :11:04.
to get in touch. The sister of a Welsh fisherman | :11:05. | :11:06.
who died in an accident on his boat is helping to lead a new campaign | :11:07. | :11:09.
to improve safety at sea. In a film produced by the RNLI, | :11:10. | :11:12.
Yona Hughes, from the Lleyn peninsula, speaks movingly | :11:13. | :11:15.
about her brother Gareth Jones, who died after getting caught | :11:16. | :11:17.
up in deck machinery while he was fishing | :11:18. | :11:19.
alone on his boat. The campaign urges those working | :11:20. | :11:21.
in the industry to take advantage of an EU fund to update aging | :11:22. | :11:24.
equipment to improve safety. Football, and League Two bottom side | :11:25. | :11:31.
Newport County's hopes of avoiding relegation were dealt another | :11:32. | :11:35.
blow with a 1-1 draw The Exiles' sixth draw in eight | :11:36. | :11:37.
games means they are still six Storm Doris is heading our way - | :11:38. | :11:42.
Behnaz will explain all. In bringing some lively conditions | :11:43. | :12:01.
as we head into Thursday. For tomorrow, a lot of wet and windy | :12:02. | :12:05.
weather to deal with. Through tonight, Rayman pushes | :12:06. | :12:09.
itself and eastwards. If early mild night, with | :12:10. | :12:11.
temperatures no lower than eight Celsius. A cold weather front | :12:12. | :12:17.
lingers too much of tomorrow, bringing with it a lot of cloud. | :12:18. | :12:22.
Rain from the world go, so not nice for tomorrow's rush hour. It is wet | :12:23. | :12:28.
and windy, and poor visibility will continue through the morning and | :12:29. | :12:31.
into the after noon. For the rest of the British Isles, the best of the | :12:32. | :12:33.
brightness across northern England and Scotland, and still a few | :12:34. | :12:37.
showers there. Risk winds, and dry weather across Northern Ireland. | :12:38. | :12:40.
Here in Wales tomorrow afternoon, a pretty soggy afternoon. Low-level | :12:41. | :12:44.
cloud, mist and fog, and the wind not making it feel very nice. Top | :12:45. | :12:50.
temperatures, 8-11. Through tomorrow night, the rain band appears for a | :12:51. | :12:54.
time, remaining cloudy overnight. Another band of rain comes in with | :12:55. | :12:59.
brisk winds. Overnight lows no lower than six Celsius, still fairly mild | :13:00. | :13:03.
for the time of year, and there it is, Doris, arriving into Thursday, | :13:04. | :13:07.
bringing with it wet and windy conditions. The rain will clear | :13:08. | :13:11.
through by lunchtime, but we do have strong winds to deal with. The Met | :13:12. | :13:15.
office has issued an amber warning for North Wales, where we can see | :13:16. | :13:19.
gusts of up to 70 miles an hour, which could cause some problems. | :13:20. | :13:23.
Keep an eye on the forecast. By Friday, it will turn colder and | :13:24. | :13:25.
brighter, with some rain arriving. That's Wales Today. | :13:26. | :13:27.
Thank you for watching. | :13:28. | :13:30. |
