Tonight's headlines: Five bodies have now been recovered in Snowdonia | :00:00. | :00:00.
And coracle fishermen choose to return their catch as salmon | :00:07. | :00:12.
stocks on the River Teifi approach "crisis point". | :00:13. | :00:32.
Five bodies have been recovered from a helicopter | :00:33. | :00:35.
The operation had been hampered by poor weather | :00:36. | :00:38.
Married couple Kevin and Ruth Burke owned the helicopter. | :00:39. | :00:41.
They were on board with three other members of their family, | :00:42. | :00:45.
named tonight as Donald, Barry and Sharon Burke. | :00:46. | :00:47.
They were travelling from near Milton Keynes on Wednesday | :00:48. | :00:54.
en route to Dublin when they crashed in the Rhinog mountains. | :00:55. | :00:57.
More than 80 people have been involved in the recovery | :00:58. | :00:59.
and investigation, as Roger Pinney reports. | :01:00. | :01:11.
A break in the weather, and a search and rescue helicopter was able to | :01:12. | :01:17.
fly over the scene. The area is known as the Celtic Badlands, so | :01:18. | :01:20.
tough is the terrain there. At last a recovery operation could get | :01:21. | :01:25.
underway. Convoys of vehicles making the tortuous journey to the site, | :01:26. | :01:29.
carrying teams drafted in to help. This is as close as we are allowed | :01:30. | :01:34.
to get to the crash site. From here, it is a half hour in a four by four | :01:35. | :01:41.
and then to our climate for, scrambled to more than 400 metres | :01:42. | :01:44.
above sea level. This evening, police confirmed that five bodies | :01:45. | :01:47.
have not been recovered. More than 80 people have been involved in the | :01:48. | :01:52.
operation, from the military, the police, coastguard and civilian | :01:53. | :01:55.
mountain rescue teams. This photo, released at the request of the | :01:56. | :01:59.
family of those who died, shows where the crash happened, and an | :02:00. | :02:03.
indication of the conditions. That is something North Wales Police | :02:04. | :02:07.
spoke about earlier in the day. We have got very skilled individuals of | :02:08. | :02:11.
their the moment, but even they are finding it extremely difficult. | :02:12. | :02:15.
The slopes are very slippery and treacherous, and the recent rains | :02:16. | :02:21.
have not made the underfoot particularly easy either. Heather | :02:22. | :02:24.
has become very slippery as well on the Downs, so it is particularly | :02:25. | :02:27.
challenging up there. Those he died included Kevin and | :02:28. | :02:33.
Ruth Burke from the Milton Keynes. The helicopter is registered to | :02:34. | :02:37.
them. The others were members of their family, all travelling to a | :02:38. | :02:41.
family baptism in Ireland. At home, there was this reaction. | :02:42. | :02:45.
Very, very sad. And of course, terrible shock for people who live | :02:46. | :02:48.
in this community. As you can see, it is a very small one, and Kevin | :02:49. | :02:54.
Andrews had only just moved into this magnificent new house that they | :02:55. | :02:58.
had been building for the last couple of years. -- Kevin and Ruth. | :02:59. | :03:03.
For the aviation authorities, the main task now is to discover what | :03:04. | :03:08.
went wrong. A team is already at work. Once recovered, the wreckage | :03:09. | :03:14.
will be minutely examined at the Air Accident Investigation branch | :03:15. | :03:15.
headquarters at Farnworth in Hampshire. | :03:16. | :03:19.
If it is a fairly straightforward accident, the investigators will | :03:20. | :03:22.
have a reasonable idea of what happened fairly soon. However, they | :03:23. | :03:27.
have to cover all possibilities, and the investigation will follow the | :03:28. | :03:35.
same processes as it would if they weren't certain of what happened. | :03:36. | :03:40.
But nothing will happen quickly. The terrain and weather conspired to | :03:41. | :03:43.
make this all an exacting, arduous operation. | :03:44. | :03:45.
A Wrexham council binman has pleaded guilty to three terror offences. | :03:46. | :03:47.
49-year-old Aabid Ali - from Yale Park in Wrexham - | :03:48. | :03:50.
was known as Darren Glennon before he converted to Islam. | :03:51. | :03:54.
He was found in possession of two terror manuals, | :03:55. | :03:58.
and also published a statement on YouTube encouraging others | :03:59. | :04:01.
He'll be sentenced next month in Manchester. | :04:02. | :04:05.
A man in his twenties has been charged with murder, | :04:06. | :04:08.
after the death of a disabled man in Wrexham. | :04:09. | :04:11.
The body of 67-year-old Nicholas Anthony Churton | :04:12. | :04:13.
was found at his home in Crescent Close on Monday morning. | :04:14. | :04:16.
Jordan Davidson also faces three charges of robbery, | :04:17. | :04:20.
two of burglary, and offences against police officers. | :04:21. | :04:23.
He's due to appear before Wrexham magistrates in the morning. | :04:24. | :04:27.
One of Britain's best known endurance cyclists has been killed | :04:28. | :04:30.
35-year-old Mike Hall lived in Monmouthshire, | :04:31. | :04:36.
He was competing in the Indian Pacific Wheel Race, | :04:37. | :04:40.
south of Canberra, when he was hit by a car. | :04:41. | :04:43.
The race, from Perth to Sydney, was cancelled after the crash. | :04:44. | :04:50.
Coracle fishermen on the River Teifi are taking the unprecedented step | :04:51. | :04:52.
It's because of increasing concerns about fish stocks. | :04:53. | :04:59.
Natural Resources Wales says the situation is | :05:00. | :05:01.
approaching "crisis point". Aled Scourfield reports. | :05:02. | :05:10.
These fishermen have the guardians of a tradition that has been | :05:11. | :05:14.
practised in the rivers of Wales since pre-Roman times. The Teifi | :05:15. | :05:19.
coracle men still use their ancient craft to capture salmon and sea weed | :05:20. | :05:24.
with nets. The river Teifi is often described as the Queen of Welsh game | :05:25. | :05:28.
fishing rivers, but there is mounting concern about salmon | :05:29. | :05:31.
numbers. These coracle men say they have taken the difficult the season | :05:32. | :05:35.
to release the salmon they catch. From the 1st of April till the 1st | :05:36. | :05:39.
of June, we have to release any salmon that we catch anyway, as part | :05:40. | :05:43.
of the licence regulations. However, from that time on till the end of | :05:44. | :05:47.
the season, we have made the decision now to actually release all | :05:48. | :05:52.
salmon that we catch, and put them back into the system so they can | :05:53. | :05:55.
follow on to spawn. What has prompted that? Is it purely | :05:56. | :05:59.
witnessing this decline in the last few years? | :06:00. | :06:02.
Yeah, definitely. A decline in the fish we are catching, you want to | :06:03. | :06:05.
make sure this fishing style is kept for our children to be able to be | :06:06. | :06:11.
done in generations to come. Latest figures from Natural | :06:12. | :06:14.
Resources Wales show that there has been a sharp decline in the number | :06:15. | :06:19.
of salmon caught on the Teifi. There were around 115 declared net catches | :06:20. | :06:24.
of salmon in 2014. That's more than halved to around 45 in 2015. | :06:25. | :06:31.
Declared rod catches of salmon are also down from 320 14 to around 210 | :06:32. | :06:35.
the following year. But what is responsible for the decline? There | :06:36. | :06:40.
have been very well-publicised pollution incidents on other parts | :06:41. | :06:43.
of the River Thames macro. More than a thousand fish were killed back in | :06:44. | :06:47.
December by a slurry league. There is also concern global warming may | :06:48. | :06:50.
be having an impact on the temperature of our rivers, which may | :06:51. | :06:55.
in turn affects pawning. Coracle men on the Teifi say they have no option | :06:56. | :07:00.
but to protect what is left. We would like the river to thrive, | :07:01. | :07:07.
you know? It wouldn't be good to fish it out, for sure. | :07:08. | :07:10.
Natural Resources Wales will be holding a consultation in me on | :07:11. | :07:13.
whether to make catch and release compulsory across the country to | :07:14. | :07:17.
help protect fish stocks, and they admit that salmon stocks on the | :07:18. | :07:22.
Teifi are reaching crisis point. Generally, the number of salmon | :07:23. | :07:25.
stocks in particular have been declining over the last few years. | :07:26. | :07:30.
We picked this up to the ongoing monitoring work we undertake. So it | :07:31. | :07:33.
is coming to a fairly critical position, especially in light of | :07:34. | :07:36.
salmon stocks at the moment. Are we talking about a crisis? | :07:37. | :07:41.
We're getting very close to a crisis situation, and it is now time that | :07:42. | :07:44.
something is done to try and address this matter. | :07:45. | :07:47.
These coracle men hope their decision to return their catches of | :07:48. | :07:50.
salmon will be followed by other fishermen and the Teifi to help | :07:51. | :07:52.
protect this river for future generations. | :07:53. | :07:53.
Here's Derek Brockway with a full forecast. | :07:54. | :08:01.
Hello. We are in for a mixed bag this weekend. That means sunshine | :08:02. | :08:08.
and April showers tomorrow, but better on Sunday, fine and dry | :08:09. | :08:11.
thanks to a ridge of high pressure. Tonight, more rain and showers on | :08:12. | :08:16.
the way. Heavy in places. Drying up in the south-west later in the | :08:17. | :08:20.
night, and slightly fresher than recent nights, with temperatures | :08:21. | :08:23.
dropping into single figures. Tomorrow, there will be showers | :08:24. | :08:27.
around in the morning. They could be having in places, but some dry, | :08:28. | :08:30.
bright weather and sunshine as well. Across the rest of the UK, a similar | :08:31. | :08:36.
story, really. Sunshine and showers, some showers heavy, hail and thunder | :08:37. | :08:40.
possible. Some parts will be lucky and stay dry. The best of the | :08:41. | :08:44.
sunshine on some of the coast. Top temperatures, 13 in Belfast, up to | :08:45. | :08:50.
15 in London. Close to home, case of dodging showers tomorrow afternoon, | :08:51. | :08:54.
and they could be heavy, with hail and thunder. Part of the north and | :08:55. | :08:57.
West will become sunny later in the afternoon, with highs of 11 in | :08:58. | :09:03.
Aberystwyth, 14 in Newport. Tomorrow evening, Lenny showers in South | :09:04. | :09:06.
Wales will fade away, leaving us all dry overnight. The sky will be clear | :09:07. | :09:10.
and it will turn chilly, with a touch of ground frost in the | :09:11. | :09:15.
countryside. Sunday looks a nice day, dry with sunny spells. Some are | :09:16. | :09:19.
building up inland. Temperatures not that high, but in the sunshine and | :09:20. | :09:21.
light winds, it will feel pleasantly warm. On Monday, more dry weather to | :09:22. | :09:28.
come, but it may not stay dry all day. Rain over Ireland will spread | :09:29. | :09:31.
across Wales during the evening and on Monday night. And then beyond | :09:32. | :09:36.
that, high pressure over the Atlantic is going to take control. | :09:37. | :09:42.
So, sunshine and April showers tomorrow. Sunday, the better day of | :09:43. | :09:45.
the weekend. A drop of rain on Monday night, and the rest of the | :09:46. | :09:46.
week, fine and dry. We're back tomorrow evening | :09:47. | :09:48.
at quarter to seven. From all of us on the | :09:49. | :09:49.
programme goodnight - | :09:50. | :09:54. |
