That's Newsnight with Kirstie coming up. | :00:00. | :00:00.
A 16% increase in junior doctors choosing Wales to train as GPs. | :00:00. | :00:09.
But will it ease the shortages and surgery closures? | :00:10. | :00:15.
And these boys have plenty of ambition, so why are there | :00:16. | :00:17.
still fewer opportunities for people with disabilities? | :00:18. | :00:40.
There's been a 16% increase in the number of junior doctors | :00:41. | :00:43.
It follows a decision by the Welsh Government to offer | :00:44. | :00:47.
cash incentives to encourage junior doctors to train in areas | :00:48. | :00:50.
Our health correspondent Owain Clarke reports. | :00:51. | :00:55.
In the north, the west, in valley communities and beyond, | :00:56. | :00:58.
a common complaint has been heard in recent years. | :00:59. | :01:01.
Some surgeries have closed, others have been taken over | :01:02. | :01:04.
because family doctors are quitting or retiring, and there's nobody | :01:05. | :01:06.
The aim of this campaign launched in the autumn | :01:07. | :01:14.
was to try to plug some of those gaps, to sell Wales | :01:15. | :01:17.
to doctors who might never have considered coming. | :01:18. | :01:19.
The Welsh Government was also offering hard cash, | :01:20. | :01:25.
including ?20,000 to train to be GPs in areas of significant shortages. | :01:26. | :01:31.
And, according to the Health Secretary, it's working. | :01:32. | :01:34.
The new figures show it has been a successful campaign, | :01:35. | :01:38.
highlighting the profile of Wales and a career here | :01:39. | :01:42.
The specific financial incentives are having a real impact too, | :01:43. | :01:46.
both in areas where it has been difficult to recruit but also exam | :01:47. | :01:49.
If they want to become GPs, junior doctors can apply | :01:50. | :01:53.
The Welsh NHS has 136 training places available. | :01:54. | :01:56.
Last year, after the first of three application rounds, | :01:57. | :01:58.
But this year, at the same stage, 114 of the 136 are full, | :01:59. | :02:09.
with no vacancies left in Pembrokeshire, North West Wales | :02:10. | :02:11.
Last year, at the end of the process there were 29 | :02:12. | :02:19.
This year, the Welsh Government hopes it might be zero. | :02:20. | :02:24.
I think it is an improving picture but of course there are significant | :02:25. | :02:27.
concerns with the issue of GPs facing retirement, with also GPs | :02:28. | :02:30.
coming through the profession that are getting fed up and leaving. | :02:31. | :02:33.
It isn't something that can be just, we can sit back and say, | :02:34. | :02:36.
"Well, that is it, we have tackled the problem." | :02:37. | :02:38.
With the day-to-day job getting ever more stressful, GP leaders insist | :02:39. | :02:46.
the Welsh Government should also do more to keep hold of current staff. | :02:47. | :02:51.
Tracey left Hampshire to become a GP in Mid Wales. | :02:52. | :02:55.
An avid bird watcher, being close to these, | :02:56. | :02:56.
the Dyfi Valley ospreys, was the biggest draw. | :02:57. | :03:01.
I'm not working in a chaotic, over-busy environment. | :03:02. | :03:06.
I feel better in myself that I can deal with things appropriately | :03:07. | :03:11.
and then I can whizz off to the osprey centre | :03:12. | :03:13.
Local GP surgeries are, after all, the front-line of the NHS, | :03:14. | :03:22.
with staff in Wales dealing with around 20 million cases a year. | :03:23. | :03:25.
But with demand set to go up even further, meeting it | :03:26. | :03:28.
Detectives investigating the death of a 27-year-old man in Bangor have | :03:29. | :03:35.
Henry Ayabowei was found collapsed outside a nightclub on Saturday. | :03:36. | :03:42.
26-year-old Kieran Roberts will appear before Llandudno | :03:43. | :03:44.
It's been claimed that the sacked chair of Sport Wales was told | :03:45. | :03:52.
by the Welsh Government he was entering a "toxic | :03:53. | :03:54.
environment" before he started the job. | :03:55. | :03:56.
The leader of the Welsh Conservatives, Andrew RT Davies, | :03:57. | :04:00.
says the comments were made to the former chair, Paul Thomas, | :04:01. | :04:02.
Mr Thomas was sacked by the Welsh Government last week. | :04:03. | :04:09.
North Wales Police paid a phone bill of more than ?44,000 for a mobile | :04:10. | :04:14.
The phone was given to help the offender re-integrate | :04:15. | :04:21.
back into the community, but because it wasn't | :04:22. | :04:23.
a "pay-as-you-go" he ran up the huge bill. | :04:24. | :04:25.
North Wales Police says it's tightened up it's proceedures. | :04:26. | :04:32.
Fewer jobs, fewer qualifications and less pay for disabled people. | :04:33. | :04:34.
That's the picture in Wales, 20 years on from laws | :04:35. | :04:38.
A new report describes a country that treats disabled people | :04:39. | :04:42.
Setting up an exhibition, ready to launch their new charity book, | :04:43. | :04:51.
there was no shortage of ambition for pupils of Pen-y-Bryn | :04:52. | :04:54.
School this afternoon at Swansea's Waterfront Museum. | :04:55. | :04:58.
I'm James, I'm 18 and I want to be a plumber, electrician or carpenter. | :04:59. | :05:04.
I'm 15 and I want to be the next Doctor Who. | :05:05. | :05:08.
And there's every hope the wannabe football coach, | :05:09. | :05:16.
plumber and future Time Lord will fulfill their ambitions. | :05:17. | :05:20.
There are many hurdles and barriers to overcome in the future, | :05:21. | :05:23.
which we will strive to embrace and challenge head-on. | :05:24. | :05:30.
Our pupils have certainly got specific skills that they can bring | :05:31. | :05:32.
to employment and be valuable members of the wider community. | :05:33. | :05:43.
For Sarah Beer, who has scoliosis, a spinal condition, | :05:44. | :05:45.
and Sarah-Jane Waters, who has Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, | :05:46. | :05:47.
a chronic illness, the details of the commission's report, | :05:48. | :05:49.
which highlights the inequality faced by disabled people, | :05:50. | :05:51.
I think it is very frustrating and I think if we are not careful | :05:52. | :05:55.
we could end up going back towards more Victorian kind | :05:56. | :05:58.
of values when it comes to disability and how | :05:59. | :06:00.
That is wrong, that is inherently wrong. | :06:01. | :06:05.
We can contribute to society and we have as much to offer | :06:06. | :06:07.
It is really sad that so many things have improved in the last 20 years | :06:08. | :06:16.
since the DDA came in for employment and awareness but it is still... | :06:17. | :06:23.
We are still going backwards when it comes to a lot | :06:24. | :06:30.
The report is the most comprehensive analysis ever of what it's | :06:31. | :06:36.
like to be a disabled person in Wales and it doesn't paint | :06:37. | :06:38.
Not only does it show that disabled people here are less likely to have | :06:39. | :06:43.
qualifications and a job, but that in some aspects of life | :06:44. | :06:46.
For example, the proportion of disabled adults in work | :06:47. | :06:52.
here stands at just over 40%, compared to nearly 80% | :06:53. | :06:54.
And there's differences in the amount of money earned too. | :06:55. | :07:06.
Disabled people have seen their wages fall by 9% | :07:07. | :07:08.
but there wasn't any change for non-disabled workers. | :07:09. | :07:10.
The Welsh Government recognises these are long term issues which it | :07:11. | :07:13.
It also says it's working with disabled people to review | :07:14. | :07:20.
the framework with the aim of publishing a refreshed action | :07:21. | :07:22.
Back in Swansea, while the pupils take a break from learning | :07:23. | :07:27.
about the past, change is needed to secure a brighter future. | :07:28. | :07:34.
Football, and just the one result to bring you tonight. | :07:35. | :07:36.
Cardiff City picking up a point on the road. | :07:37. | :07:39.
Their match with Barnsley finished goalless. | :07:40. | :07:40.
It means they stay 13th in the Championship, one point | :07:41. | :07:42.
Let's see what the weather has in store. | :07:43. | :07:51.
I think we have seen the last of the rain for a while. March was the | :07:52. | :08:06.
latest in Wales since 2008 but the next few days are largely dry and | :08:07. | :08:13.
settled. -- wettest. Tonight, the sky is fairly clear with a few | :08:14. | :08:21.
clouds in the North. A touch of ground frost in sports. Tomorrow, a | :08:22. | :08:27.
fresh start, but bright for most of us the cloud will increase during | :08:28. | :08:30.
the morning, the odd spot of light or drizzle in the North. The rest of | :08:31. | :08:36.
the UK, sunny spells in southern England tomorrow, sunny in the best | :08:37. | :08:40.
country in the afternoon, elsewhere a lot more cloud, most places dry, | :08:41. | :08:46.
some spots of light rain and drizzle in the Northwest. Generally dry in | :08:47. | :08:55.
Wales tomorrow afternoon. Fairly cloudy but bright in places. Some | :08:56. | :08:58.
sunshine in the south and south-east. A light to moderate | :08:59. | :09:09.
breeze. Thursday, maybe the odd shower in the north and West, | :09:10. | :09:14.
otherwise eight dry story. Some gaps in the cloud allowing sunshine | :09:15. | :09:21.
through. Friday, generally dry again and hopefully the cloud will break | :09:22. | :09:25.
up more readily with a bit more sunshine so feeling a bit warmer. | :09:26. | :09:31.
High-pressure on Saturday begins to drift away into the continent. It | :09:32. | :09:36.
looks promising for the weekend. Saturday, the sunniest and warmest. | :09:37. | :09:41.
Sunday is cloudy but staying mostly dry. A lot of dry weather over the | :09:42. | :09:45.
next few days. Week In Week Out next tonight | :09:46. | :09:47.
investigates children in care. From all of us on the | :09:48. | :09:52.
programme, goodnight. | :09:53. | :09:56. |
