Dennis Payne's cancer was diagnosed early. | :00:07. | :00:13.
Now a trial to fast track cancer diagnosis to help patients like him. | :00:14. | :00:17.
Also tonight, five-year-old Joseph Smith killed | :00:18. | :00:18.
His stepfather is found guilty of causing his death | :00:19. | :00:23.
And in the first investigation of its kind in Wales - | :00:24. | :00:28.
Andrew Thomas, a sheep rustler, is convicted using DNA. | :00:29. | :00:43.
We have some of the worst cancer survival rates in Europe. | :00:44. | :00:49.
For lung cancer, the most common cancer worldwide, | :00:50. | :00:51.
Wales ranked second worst in a landmark study - | :00:52. | :00:54.
coming 28th out of 29 European countries. | :00:55. | :00:56.
A year ago Welsh doctors visited Denmark to see how cancer services | :00:57. | :01:02.
In this special report our Health Correspondent, Owain Clarke, | :01:03. | :01:09.
looks at the groundbreaking new trial hoping to catch cancer | :01:10. | :01:12.
I know my own body, and I knew something was wrong. | :01:13. | :01:19.
But Dennis Payne, from Aberdare, wasn't sure exactly what. | :01:20. | :01:21.
Persuaded by his wife to go to his GP, he found out | :01:22. | :01:24.
Once people band that around, that's what is kind of frightening. | :01:25. | :01:34.
But he's glad he took his wife's advice. | :01:35. | :01:36.
An early diagnosis means he's got a much better chance | :01:37. | :01:39.
But the picture's not so rosy across the board. | :01:40. | :01:43.
Cancer survival rates in Wales are worse than in many | :01:44. | :01:45.
Wales has some of the most challenging outcomes | :01:46. | :01:49.
for cancer mortality, cancer presentation, new cancers | :01:50. | :01:52.
We are urgent about tackling this as an issue and doing something | :01:53. | :01:58.
Last spring, this group from the Welsh NHS travelled to Denmark | :01:59. | :02:11.
The country's invested heavily in specialist diagnostic | :02:12. | :02:16.
centres like this one, where patients who might have cancer | :02:17. | :02:19.
but have vague symptoms can have lots of scans and tests | :02:20. | :02:22.
People had to wait too long within the health care system, | :02:23. | :02:26.
from attending the health care until the start of treatment. | :02:27. | :02:28.
So the group came back from Denmark not only convinced that the system | :02:29. | :02:32.
they saw saved lives, but also convinced that it could be | :02:33. | :02:34.
And to be fair, they didn't hang about. | :02:35. | :02:40.
And here in the Cynon Valley, 40 GPs are about to take part | :02:41. | :02:45.
in a new trial, built around the principles of the Danish model. | :02:46. | :02:47.
So what will they be looking out for? | :02:48. | :02:51.
We go through gaps where we don't see people for a while, | :02:52. | :02:54.
but it's a bit like if you see somebody in the street you haven't | :02:55. | :02:58.
seen for a long time and they look different, and it worries you. | :02:59. | :03:01.
We get the same sort of signals when people come in and we can see | :03:02. | :03:04.
this person looks really unwell, or they don't remind me of how | :03:05. | :03:07.
So if a GP's gut instinct says it might be cancer, | :03:08. | :03:13.
a patient won't have to wait for a series of individual tests. | :03:14. | :03:16.
Instead they'll be sent within a week to a new diagnostic | :03:17. | :03:19.
clinic here at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital in Llantrisant. | :03:20. | :03:21.
There'll also be one at the Neath and Talbot Hospital, | :03:22. | :03:23.
and as many tests and scans as necessary will be performed - | :03:24. | :03:26.
But will there be enough staff and resources to make it work? | :03:27. | :03:31.
There is fewer radiologists, there is not enough endoscopies. | :03:32. | :03:33.
But we need a completely different way of working. | :03:34. | :03:39.
Currently what we're doing is pretty much concentrating on a smaller | :03:40. | :03:44.
What I would like to see is to provide the same level | :03:45. | :03:49.
of high quality of care for all cancer patients. | :03:50. | :03:52.
And even before the trial's underway, one group of patients | :03:53. | :03:55.
at the Royal Glamorgan are already seeing the benefit. | :03:56. | :04:01.
So this is an MRI of a gentleman's prostate who's come | :04:02. | :04:03.
Those with suspected prostate cancer now routinely get an MRI scan | :04:04. | :04:08.
We were having very long waits for our patients. | :04:09. | :04:14.
You know, 60-100 days just to get through the biopsy, | :04:15. | :04:17.
the results and everything, which is far too long. | :04:18. | :04:20.
Now our results show we still occasionally have delays. | :04:21. | :04:23.
But they're coming through the pathway within sort of 15-20 days. | :04:24. | :04:27.
When it comes to cancer, speed often matters, | :04:28. | :04:30.
and because of his early diagnosis, Dennis is confident he'll long be | :04:31. | :04:33.
able to enjoy seeing his young family grow up. | :04:34. | :04:37.
They're girls, and I've got a girl who's just turned seven as well. | :04:38. | :04:43.
So I've got four children under seven. | :04:44. | :04:45.
And if the new trial helps others, diagnostic centres might become | :04:46. | :04:50.
a feature of the Welsh NHS, just like in Denmark. | :04:51. | :04:55.
A 24-year-old man who killed his own stepson in a car crash has been | :04:56. | :04:58.
found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving. | :04:59. | :05:01.
Joseph Smith suffered multiple injuries when the car, | :05:02. | :05:04.
driven by Dean Collins, hit oncoming traffic | :05:05. | :05:07.
Erratic and weaving in and out of traffic - | :05:08. | :05:15.
that's how witnesses at the trial described Dean Collins's | :05:16. | :05:19.
driving in the moments leading up to this crash. | :05:20. | :05:22.
The car he was driving crossed the central reservation | :05:23. | :05:25.
into oncoming traffic on Western Avenue in Cardiff, | :05:26. | :05:28.
His stepson, five-year-old Joseph Smith, suffered | :05:29. | :05:33.
Today at Cardiff Crown Court, the jury found him guilty of | :05:34. | :05:39.
causing death by dangerous driving, and four counts of causing serious | :05:40. | :05:42.
His partner, Joseph's mum, Laura Bright, seen here by his side, | :05:43. | :05:49.
was in the car with him, along with her mother and | :05:50. | :05:52.
In the back was five-year-ikd Joseph Smith, a young football fan | :05:53. | :05:58.
The court heard he was not in a booster seat - | :05:59. | :06:04.
a legal requirement for children under 12, or under | :06:05. | :06:06.
The seat belt crossed his neck instead of his body. | :06:07. | :06:11.
The trial also heard how Collins had small traces of cocaine | :06:12. | :06:14.
in his blood at the time, although it's not known how this | :06:15. | :06:17.
The 24-year-old from Saint Mellons, who passed his driving test three | :06:18. | :06:24.
months before the accident, says he has no memory | :06:25. | :06:27.
of what happened, and that it was an unavoidable, tragic accident. | :06:28. | :06:31.
On hearing the jury deliver all five guilty verdicts, | :06:32. | :06:38.
Dean Collins turned towards the back of the court where his | :06:39. | :06:41.
He held their gaze, gesturing towards them as he was led away. | :06:42. | :06:45.
He's been remanded in custody ahead of sentencing tomorrow afternoon. | :06:46. | :06:54.
More than 120 jobs are being lost at an aviation company in Flintshire | :06:55. | :06:58.
Marshall Aviation Services saysit's closing its site in Broughton, | :06:59. | :07:05.
which has been open since 1930, because of significant | :07:06. | :07:08.
The Unite Union says the closure is devastating for North Wales. | :07:09. | :07:17.
A brother has admitted sending abusive messages to four schoolgirls | :07:18. | :07:20.
he thought were bullying his sister, who was later found dead. | :07:21. | :07:24.
14-year-old, Nyah James was found at her home in Swansea in February. | :07:25. | :07:28.
Police are investigating the circumstances. | :07:29. | :07:31.
A court heard how Jordan Clements sent the online messages | :07:32. | :07:35.
A sheep rustler from Garnant has been given a suspended jail term | :07:36. | :07:44.
after police used DNA evidence to prove that newborn lambs had | :07:45. | :07:47.
It's the first investigation of its kind in Wales. | :07:48. | :07:54.
Andrew Thomas had previously pleaded guilty to handling 18 stolen sheep. | :07:55. | :07:57.
He was ordered to pay ?1,000 in compensation to the victim. | :07:58. | :08:01.
Newborn lambs, full of the joys of spring. | :08:02. | :08:08.
But they proved to be the undoing of sheep rustler | :08:09. | :08:11.
Swansea Crown Court heard that Thomas was himself a sheep farmer, | :08:12. | :08:16.
Suspicions were raised at Llanybydder Livestock Market | :08:17. | :08:21.
after sheep with damaged ears were sold by Thomas. | :08:22. | :08:25.
There was concern that ear tags had been tampered with, | :08:26. | :08:27.
as these pictures from Dyfed-Powys Police show. | :08:28. | :08:30.
To prove Thomas's guilt, police used DNA tests on the sheep | :08:31. | :08:33.
They waited for pregnant ewes that had been sold to give birth. | :08:34. | :08:39.
Blood was then taken from the newborn lambs, | :08:40. | :08:42.
which proved they'd been fathered by the rams on the victim's farm. | :08:43. | :08:47.
It's believed to be the first investigation | :08:48. | :08:50.
Out of the 15 lambs that we have, nine of those could be proven to be | :08:51. | :08:57.
directly linked to the rams that the victim had. | :08:58. | :09:02.
They were rams that the victim had bred himself as well. | :09:03. | :09:06.
And they were rams that hadn't been used on sheep anywhere | :09:07. | :09:10.
So the fact that we could directly link those lambs back | :09:11. | :09:14.
to the farmer's stock proved then that the ewes, their mothers, | :09:15. | :09:16.
The judge said the farming community had pulled together to defeat those | :09:17. | :09:21.
He added that Thomas had caused a great deal of hurt and had stolen | :09:22. | :09:27.
The judge said it would take a long time before they forgave him. | :09:28. | :09:32.
Unions say livestock thefts can have a devastating impact | :09:33. | :09:35.
on farmers, and they hope this case will act as a deterrent to rustlers. | :09:36. | :09:39.
Well, I think this DNA testing is a new technology. | :09:40. | :09:42.
We haven't seen this technology being used before, | :09:43. | :09:47.
and I hope it will be a deterrent against rustlers, these and people | :09:48. | :09:50.
who take part in these acts will think twice about doing it | :09:51. | :09:54.
Andrew Thomas declined to comment as he left court, | :09:55. | :09:59.
after receiving an eight-month suspended jail term | :10:00. | :10:03.
and an order to pay ?1,000 in compensation to the victim. | :10:04. | :10:05.
20 acres of lost garden have been restored in the Conwy Valley | :10:06. | :10:08.
and are open to the public for the first time. | :10:09. | :10:10.
A decade of conservation work has been carried out | :10:11. | :10:13.
It means visitors can now explore the previously overgrown woodland | :10:14. | :10:17.
and meadow in one of the oldest parts of the grounds. | :10:18. | :10:24.
Rugby now, and Wales and Cardiff Blues flanker Sam Warburton | :10:25. | :10:27.
is expected to be out because of injury for around six weeks. | :10:28. | :10:30.
Warburton, who's tipped by some to lead the Lions Tour | :10:31. | :10:33.
of New Zealand this summer, injured his knee on Friday | :10:34. | :10:36.
and is likely miss the rest of the domestic season. | :10:37. | :10:39.
But his coach at the Blues says he should be fit for the Lions. | :10:40. | :10:43.
The squad will be announced a week tomorrow. | :10:44. | :10:46.
Sam's very experienced and a good pro. | :10:47. | :10:48.
He knows now if he works hard to get that right, | :10:49. | :10:53.
Yeah, he's been fine today, and I think relatively good news | :10:54. | :10:58.
Former Wales and Lions scrum half Mike Phillips has announced | :10:59. | :11:07.
The 34-year-old played 94 times for Wales and won two | :11:08. | :11:12.
Phillips, who currently plays for Sale Sharks, | :11:13. | :11:18.
will hang up his boots at the end of the season. | :11:19. | :11:23.
Let's see what the weather has in store - Derek's got the forecast. | :11:24. | :11:31.
It turns out quite nice today - dry and write with sunshine. Not quite | :11:32. | :11:40.
so nice as this tomorrow, though. Tonight, Cloud will increase. Maybe | :11:41. | :11:45.
the odd light shower later in the south, but no more than that. Not as | :11:46. | :11:49.
chilly as last night, but don't call with a westerly breeze. -- but still | :11:50. | :11:56.
cool. Tomorrow, a few glimpses of sunshine but thicker cloud will | :11:57. | :12:01.
bring more rain to the north in the late morning. The rain is tied to | :12:02. | :12:04.
this cold front line through northern England which will slip | :12:05. | :12:07.
southwards during the day. The rain will turn lighter and more patchy. | :12:08. | :12:12.
Southern counties of England will be mostly dry with sunny intervals. To | :12:13. | :12:17.
the north of the front, a mixture of sunshine and showers. Quite windy in | :12:18. | :12:22.
Scotland and feeling chilly. In Wales tomorrow afternoon, plenty of | :12:23. | :12:26.
cloud. That weak cold front bringing a few spots of rain. Brightening up | :12:27. | :12:31.
to the north with the odd shower. Breezy than today with highs between | :12:32. | :12:36.
10-13 C. Tomorrow evening and overnight the wind will blow one or | :12:37. | :12:40.
two showers across Wales. Otherwise dry with gaps in the cloud. Nichola | :12:41. | :12:45.
White, and chilly inland. A bright start places for Thursday. Dry | :12:46. | :12:54.
weather as well. Plenty of cloud and a little rain around. You should | :12:55. | :12:59.
turn milder with highs of 11-13 Celsius with a West to | :13:00. | :13:04.
south-westerly breeze. More change over the next few days, but amounts | :13:05. | :13:09.
of rain will be generally small. For the Easter holiday weekend we are | :13:10. | :13:12.
looking at one or two showers and a lot of dry weather. Sunshine, too. | :13:13. | :13:16.
Not the best of weather, but not too bad on the whole. | :13:17. | :13:18.
That's Wales Today - thank you for watching. | :13:19. | :13:21.
From all of us on the programme, goodnight. | :13:22. | :13:29. |
