Welcome to Wales Today. Tonight's headlines - | :00:00. | :00:00.
Kate Barnett from Newtown with her daughter Isla. | :00:00. | :00:07.
Following her son's death at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital | :00:08. | :00:09.
she says she's angry children have continued to die | :00:10. | :00:12.
Calls for a new approach to tackle poverty in our most | :00:13. | :00:16.
And heading into the mountains over the Easter weekend? | :00:17. | :00:19.
A plea from frustrated rescue teams to make sure | :00:20. | :00:22.
A couple from Powys whose baby son died at a hospital in Shrewsbury, | :00:23. | :00:42.
have spoken of their anger that infants have continued to die | :00:43. | :00:46.
at the same NHS Trust which is now at the centre | :00:47. | :00:49.
Jenson Barnett from Newtown died in 2013 from brain injuries, | :00:50. | :00:54.
two days after a failed attempt to deliver him with forceps. | :00:55. | :00:58.
The boss of the health trust has apologised unreservedly | :00:59. | :01:00.
Little Jenson Barnett should have been nearly four years old now. | :01:01. | :01:09.
But he died just two days after he was born | :01:10. | :01:11.
Staff tried to deliver him with forceps but they slipped | :01:12. | :01:16.
off his head causing injuries to his brain. | :01:17. | :01:18.
He was later born by emergency caesarian section but it was | :01:19. | :01:22.
We spent that night with him but obviously he had | :01:23. | :01:25.
There were six or seven, maybe even more, doctors around him. | :01:26. | :01:31.
We spent the night with him and then the day he got moved to a different | :01:32. | :01:42.
unit with lots more tubes again but yes, it was not nice. | :01:43. | :01:51.
Jenson was one of a number of babies to die at Shrewsbury | :01:52. | :01:54.
and Telford NHS Trust over the past eight years. | :01:55. | :01:56.
Seven of those deaths, including Jenson's, | :01:57. | :01:59.
Kate, who's since had a daughter Isla, says despite an apology | :02:00. | :02:05.
and assurances that lessons would be learned she's angry that | :02:06. | :02:08.
similar tragedies continued at the trust. | :02:09. | :02:11.
At the time they said they were going to do stuff about | :02:12. | :02:16.
it and things had changed, but obviously they have not. | :02:17. | :02:19.
Seeing all this on the news has really made me quite | :02:20. | :02:23.
The Trust, which also provides services | :02:24. | :02:30.
for patients across the border in mid Wales delivers around 4,700 | :02:31. | :02:33.
babies each year - around 224 of them are from the Powys area. | :02:34. | :02:38.
Tonight its chief executive has apologised unreservedly to the | :02:39. | :02:40.
He said, in recent years independent external reviews have repeatedly | :02:41. | :02:48.
shown the Trust is progressing and learning lessons but that it | :02:49. | :02:50.
England's Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt has asked for a review | :02:51. | :02:55.
into the deaths and other incidents at the trust | :02:56. | :02:57.
and for the families affected to be kept informed. | :02:58. | :03:00.
The Barnett's local MP has welcomed the investigation. | :03:01. | :03:03.
One needs to have an investigation into what happened. | :03:04. | :03:07.
There has to be full transparency in order | :03:08. | :03:09.
There has to be the most fulsome of apologies to any | :03:10. | :03:14.
families thathave been affected and had such | :03:15. | :03:16.
Kate Barnett and her husband say that Jenson will always be a big | :03:17. | :03:21.
part of their family and hope other families will be | :03:22. | :03:23.
You go into hospital to have a baby, you do not expect to come out | :03:24. | :03:29.
I don't think anything will bring Jenson back | :03:30. | :03:36.
but our family and friends, are strong together as well. | :03:37. | :03:46.
Kate Barnett ending that report there from Matthew Richards. | :03:47. | :03:51.
Many policies aimed at reducing poverty in Wales | :03:52. | :03:54.
That's the damning finding of a major new study | :03:55. | :03:57.
into the poorest place in the country - | :03:58. | :03:59.
Experts spent six months analysing the estate. | :04:00. | :04:04.
Our economics correspondent, Sarah Dickins, has | :04:05. | :04:06.
Lansbury Park sits almost in the shadow of Caerphilly's | :04:07. | :04:13.
famous castle but it is a world away from its grandeur. | :04:14. | :04:16.
This is the most deprived community in Wales and although proud | :04:17. | :04:20.
and tight knit, it has complex problems. | :04:21. | :04:24.
It feels like one that is almost hemmed in, it's one that is almost | :04:25. | :04:28.
As a nation we are creating economic policies which are dislocated | :04:29. | :04:33.
from people who live in communities like Lansbury. | :04:34. | :04:37.
We need to talk to them, engage them rather than leave them behind. | :04:38. | :04:42.
With the children in school a group of mothers start their work-out. | :04:43. | :04:45.
Lorna and Heid were brought up in Lansbury Park and are still | :04:46. | :04:47.
It does not mean that is what is going on in the community. | :04:48. | :04:56.
Although Lansbury Park is close to jobs in Cardiff and the M4, | :04:57. | :05:04.
I'm told it is hard for young people to get a job. | :05:05. | :05:07.
I think there are jobs out there and I think it does not help | :05:08. | :05:11.
when people would like to go for a job that they think, it is not | :05:12. | :05:16.
worth me trying because I haven't got the qualifications, | :05:17. | :05:21.
Two thirds of lone parents are not employed, that's 50% higher | :05:22. | :05:27.
Men living on Lansbury Park are more than twice as likely to be | :05:28. | :05:33.
You can see the challenges, more than half of the adults | :05:34. | :05:39.
on the estate have no qualifications and half have no car. | :05:40. | :05:44.
Caerphilly Council owns the social housing, not a housing association. | :05:45. | :05:47.
It is making the houses warmer and drier as part of a ?10 million | :05:48. | :05:51.
It is also trying to set up work experience for residents | :05:52. | :05:56.
It knows it needs to do things very differently and argues that | :05:57. | :06:03.
It is about confidence, it is about giving those people | :06:04. | :06:07.
the confidence and the self belief that they are worth it. | :06:08. | :06:11.
It means working with them to make them believe | :06:12. | :06:14.
People say you are not good enough, you believe you are not good enough, | :06:15. | :06:27.
There is a real mix of problems here and certainly | :06:28. | :06:31.
I have been talking to people at community events, | :06:32. | :06:35.
and to community workers here as well and what they tell | :06:36. | :06:38.
me is that the group of people who are hardest | :06:39. | :06:41.
One solution in the report is that there should be more | :06:42. | :06:46.
day-to-day or even mundane jobs here on the estate, | :06:47. | :06:49.
for instance, repairing things, caring for people | :06:50. | :06:52.
That way there could be jobs here that people would not need | :06:53. | :06:57.
too many qualifications for and they would not | :06:58. | :06:59.
As the Welsh Government determines its future | :07:00. | :07:03.
anti-poverty policies, the message from Lansbury Park will | :07:04. | :07:06.
The sister of a woman unlawfully killed at a hostel in Argoed has | :07:07. | :07:13.
spoken about how she discovered she'd been murdered on social media. | :07:14. | :07:17.
Cerys Yemm was attacked by Matthew Williams in November 2014. | :07:18. | :07:20.
Police officers stunned him with a Taser but he later died. | :07:21. | :07:23.
Cerys Yemm's sister, Shannon, was speaking on the | :07:24. | :07:26.
I had seen a post obviously that there had been a murder in Argoed. | :07:27. | :07:34.
Then I had people messaging me via Facebook message saying | :07:35. | :07:37.
please don't tell me it's true, it's not your sister. | :07:38. | :07:41.
I had to drive home from Cardiff then, | :07:42. | :07:43.
Mum was crying, couldn't tell me, couldn't speak on the phone. | :07:44. | :07:51.
Gwent Police say there was a delay in telling Cerys Yemm's | :07:52. | :07:54.
family about her death, because they wanted her mother to be | :07:55. | :07:56.
told by an officer who'd dealt with her previously. | :07:57. | :08:01.
The former head of a Swansea homeless charity has | :08:02. | :08:03.
admitted forging invoices for ?1.3 million into his own bank account | :08:04. | :08:08.
Robert Davies was working for Cyrenians Cymru | :08:09. | :08:13.
when he was arrested in December 2014. | :08:14. | :08:15.
The charity later went into administration. | :08:16. | :08:18.
Davies was remanded in custody, to be sentenced later this month. | :08:19. | :08:24.
The Easter getaway has begun tonight and with it volunteer rescuers have | :08:25. | :08:28.
expressed their frustration at the number of people who go | :08:29. | :08:30.
The sign says it all, car park full and that is a day ahead of the bank | :08:31. | :08:43.
This is Pen-y-Pass, the start of two of the tracks up Snowdon. | :08:44. | :08:47.
There among those getting ready I met two people | :08:48. | :08:50.
and they seem to know what they were doing. | :08:51. | :08:54.
You have to be prepare for the cold, you have to prepare for | :08:55. | :08:58.
So basic essentials and you have to know | :08:59. | :09:02.
I usually Google it, the route, time, conditions, difficulty. | :09:03. | :09:09.
We have been checking it every day of the week. | :09:10. | :09:12.
Even though we have not been here before, we more or less | :09:13. | :09:16.
Not everyone is that appeared, today the cloud | :09:17. | :09:20.
was closing in higher up and it was bitter | :09:21. | :09:23.
on the summit, feeling like minus seven Celsius in the wind | :09:24. | :09:27.
and still there were those ill-equipped for what | :09:28. | :09:31.
You notice men with families, more the children that are just | :09:32. | :09:35.
in trainers and jeans and tracksuit bottoms. | :09:36. | :09:40.
It is quite rough up there, some of the paths are quite rough. | :09:41. | :09:44.
No wonder volunteers like those in the | :09:45. | :09:48.
Today members there were planning a simulated rescue on Tryfan, | :09:49. | :09:56.
one of the toughest peaks in Snowdonia. | :09:57. | :09:59.
Together the six mountain rescue teams in Wales have had 80 | :10:00. | :10:02.
As volunteers, we are leaving our homes, work and families to carry | :10:03. | :10:08.
out rescues and it is very frustrating when we find people who, | :10:09. | :10:14.
it is almost a self-inflicted injury by going out ill-prepared. | :10:15. | :10:18.
It is a similar story in South and Mid Wales. | :10:19. | :10:20.
The Central Beacons team has had an unprecedented 51 calls | :10:21. | :10:24.
since New Year, they know Easter | :10:25. | :10:27.
We strive to provide a professional service | :10:28. | :10:31.
but we are volunteers and potentially with the increasing | :10:32. | :10:34.
trend in calls for help, there is potential for a drain | :10:35. | :10:38.
on resources, availability, equipment and funding of course. | :10:39. | :10:43.
Without exception, mountain rescuers love the terrain in which they work | :10:44. | :10:46.
but they constantly warn that beautiful as they are, | :10:47. | :10:49.
the mountains will come back and bite you. | :10:50. | :10:54.
The future of the Dragons and their home ground Rodney Parade | :10:55. | :10:57.
will be the subject of a General Meeting of Newport RFC | :10:58. | :11:00.
They're set to vote on the potential takeover of the region by the WRU. | :11:01. | :11:06.
Rodney Parade is also used by Newport County. | :11:07. | :11:10.
The only Welshman at the World Snooker Championship, | :11:11. | :11:14.
Ryan Day, will play World number 44 Xiao Guodong in the first round. | :11:15. | :11:18.
It's the first time in 40 years of the event at The Crucible that | :11:19. | :11:22.
Let's see how the weather is looking ahead of the bank holiday weekend. | :11:23. | :11:29.
A mixture of good and bad. Some sunshine in Aberystwyth today over | :11:30. | :11:44.
the weekend it is going to remain on the equal side. A little rain, a few | :11:45. | :11:49.
showers but some sunshine as well. For tonight, most places dry but | :11:50. | :11:53.
thicker cloud will bring a little rain into parts of mid and west | :11:54. | :11:59.
Wales. A fairly mild night. Good Friday morning mostly cloudy, dry in | :12:00. | :12:03.
parts of the south and east. Parts of mid and north west Wales down. | :12:04. | :12:10.
Across the rest of the UK tomorrow, southern parts of England, mostly | :12:11. | :12:21.
dry and bright. Northern Scotland, bright and cold with shower with. | :12:22. | :12:25.
The little snow on the mountains. In Wales tomorrow, it is a cloudy | :12:26. | :12:30.
picture with rain becoming extensive. Heavy persistent rain for | :12:31. | :12:35.
the north, mid and west. Dry in Monmouthshire. It is looking pretty | :12:36. | :12:41.
wet in Snowdonia tomorrow. Tomorrow evening, this rain will move south | :12:42. | :12:46.
east and clear so turning dry overnight bar one or two showers. | :12:47. | :12:51.
Better prospects on Saturday, clearer and brighter. You may catch | :12:52. | :12:55.
a shower but a lot of dry weather with sunny breaks. Temperatures on | :12:56. | :13:02.
the cool side. Easter Day on Sunday, cloudy for a while, maybe some rain | :13:03. | :13:06.
in the north. It should try and brighten up in the south with highs | :13:07. | :13:11.
of 13 Celsius. Bank holiday Monday should be driving a pass from one or | :13:12. | :13:15.
two showers. Hopefully, some sunshine. The mixed bag this bank | :13:16. | :13:20.
holiday but some some decent weather as well. | :13:21. | :13:21.
We'll be back with updates in the morning into BBC Breakfast. | :13:22. | :13:24.
But that is Wales Today, from all of us on the programme, good night. | :13:25. | :13:26. |
