Welcome to Wales Today - our headlines tonight | :00:00. | :00:10.
a new election - some old faces - former Plaid Cymru | :00:11. | :00:12.
leader Ieuan Wyn Jones - the latest to throw his hat into | :00:13. | :00:18.
the ring to become an MP - again and teenager Ethan Matthews | :00:19. | :00:20.
waiting two and a half years for a kidney operation. | :00:21. | :00:31.
He used to be a big name in Welsh politics, | :00:32. | :00:42.
the Plaid Cymru MP who became leader of his party. | :00:43. | :00:45.
Now Ieuan Wyn Jones wants to make a comeback - | :00:46. | :00:48.
and stand once again in his old constituency of Ynys Mon | :00:49. | :00:51.
This comes as all parties are working frantically - | :00:52. | :00:55.
behind the scenes to choose candidates, | :00:56. | :00:58.
after last week's surprise announcement of a snap election. | :00:59. | :01:03.
Here's our political editor Nick Servini. | :01:04. | :01:09.
He's one of the big beasts of Welsh politics. | :01:10. | :01:12.
Ieuan Wyn Jones has been on the scene for many years. | :01:13. | :01:17.
Not only as the former MP and Assembly member for Anglesey, | :01:18. | :01:20.
but as the Welsh government's former Deputy First Minister. | :01:21. | :01:24.
It's been confirmed that he'll try to become Plaid's candidate | :01:25. | :01:28.
in June but he'll have to win the nomination against | :01:29. | :01:30.
a number of others within the party on Wednesday. | :01:31. | :01:33.
In these exceptional circumstances, and they are exceptional | :01:34. | :01:37.
circumstances, I believe we need people of experience, | :01:38. | :01:40.
people who know the political system, | :01:41. | :01:44.
you know how to campaign, who have got experience both in parliament | :01:45. | :01:47.
and the Assembly, the Welsh government and so on. | :01:48. | :01:50.
All that experience should be put to use. | :01:51. | :01:53.
If he wins, he'll be up against the current Labour MP, | :01:54. | :01:56.
Albert Owen, who has confirmed he is seeking re-election. | :01:57. | :02:03.
He retained the seat two years ago with a majority of just 229. | :02:04. | :02:07.
There is also likely to be a strong Conservative challenge. | :02:08. | :02:09.
After all, this was a Tory seat in the 1980s | :02:10. | :02:11.
The BBC will publish a full list of candidates | :02:12. | :02:15.
Big name or not, there's always the debate about whether people | :02:16. | :02:20.
vote for parties or personalities in general elections. | :02:21. | :02:24.
It's the parties behind their policies and what they represent | :02:25. | :02:30.
and what they have to offer instead of just a name. | :02:31. | :02:33.
It is going to be both but it depends on the strength | :02:34. | :02:36.
I'm still thinking about it but it's probably going to be the party. | :02:37. | :02:43.
The announcement by Plaid's former leader comes as the current | :02:44. | :02:46.
leader, Leanne Wood, said she would not be fighting her seat | :02:47. | :02:51.
Today the Liberal Democrats announced the former | :02:52. | :02:57.
assembly member, Lynette Parrott, will stand in Cardiff Central | :02:58. | :03:01.
against the current Labour MP, Jo Stephens. | :03:02. | :03:04.
This is a top target seat for the Lib Dems | :03:05. | :03:07.
Expect many more names to emerge in the coming days. | :03:08. | :03:13.
The parties have set procedures in place to choose candidates | :03:14. | :03:16.
but everything has been shunted forward because in a short campaign, | :03:17. | :03:19.
Also in a short campaign, there is no time to build up | :03:20. | :03:26.
a profile and that's why the parties, | :03:27. | :03:30.
if they can will try to select those who are already recognised names. | :03:31. | :03:37.
One leading academic says there's a big scramble going on behind | :03:38. | :03:40.
the scenes as no-one was expecting having to find candidates | :03:41. | :03:43.
for a number of years and now it has to be done within a matter of days. | :03:44. | :03:47.
Often parties will take weeks, if not months to select a candidate. | :03:48. | :03:51.
There will be a whole process involving hustings | :03:52. | :03:54.
meetings in different parts of the constituencies | :03:55. | :03:58.
and discussions and vetting and so on. | :03:59. | :04:01.
A lot of it will have to go by the board because parties | :04:02. | :04:04.
have to have people in place soon and ready to fight the election | :04:05. | :04:07.
and if that means short-circuiting some of the normal mechanisms. | :04:08. | :04:09.
There's a growing sense of urgency surrounding the selections. | :04:10. | :04:14.
Every day without a candidate will be considered a wasted day | :04:15. | :04:17.
The Prime Minister is due in Wales tomorrow. | :04:18. | :04:23.
It'll be Theresa May's first visit here - | :04:24. | :04:27.
since she announced a snap general election to be held in June. | :04:28. | :04:30.
She's expected to travel to a number of seats. | :04:31. | :04:32.
The Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn made his first campaign visit | :04:33. | :04:34.
to Wales last Friday, to the swing seat of Cardiff North. | :04:35. | :04:41.
A general election poll - commissioned by ITV Wales - | :04:42. | :04:44.
has predicted a surge in support for the Conservatives in June. | :04:45. | :04:49.
It could see the Conservatives replace Labour - | :04:50. | :04:52.
A thousand people were questioned in Wales last week by you go in this | :04:53. | :05:00.
poll for Cardiff University and ITV Wales. | :05:01. | :05:05.
And what it has put the support for the parties that is the | :05:06. | :05:08.
Conservatives 40%, Labour 30%, in Wales, Plaid Cymru 13%. | :05:09. | :05:10.
And if you project that onto the potential | :05:11. | :05:19.
numbers of seats that could be won, were looking at 21 seats in Wales | :05:20. | :05:23.
for the Conservatives, 15 for Labour, three for | :05:24. | :05:26.
So, it shows an unprecedented ten point | :05:27. | :05:34.
lead for the Tories in Wales, something no one has seen in modern | :05:35. | :05:37.
Professor Roger Scully from Cardiff University | :05:38. | :05:44.
has spoken about Wales, potentially, being on the brink of | :05:45. | :05:47.
We have the entirety of an, albeit short, general election | :05:48. | :06:03.
campaign still see and there are dangers in making its seat | :06:04. | :06:05.
predictions off the back of voting intention polls. | :06:06. | :06:07.
Nevertheless, this is a sensational prediction and | :06:08. | :06:09.
because of that, I think, it will create a lot of noise, | :06:10. | :06:12.
and indeed provide a dramatic backdrop to the | :06:13. | :06:14.
campaign in Wales over the next few weeks. | :06:15. | :06:19.
A patient with a serious mental health condition | :06:20. | :06:21.
and complex medical needs, has been waiting to be | :06:22. | :06:25.
discharged from hospital in the Hywel Dda Health Board area - | :06:26. | :06:28.
The patient is expected to leave hospital in around six months, | :06:29. | :06:35.
after arrangements were made for their care. | :06:36. | :06:37.
The Welsh Government says "delayed transfers of care" | :06:38. | :06:40.
are at their lowest level for 12 years. | :06:41. | :06:44.
Long-haul flights from Cardiff to the Middle East have been | :06:45. | :06:48.
Planes will start flying to Doha - Quatar's capital - from 2018. | :06:49. | :06:57.
Cardiff airport saw a 16% increase in passenger numbers last year. | :06:58. | :07:01.
The parents of a 14-year-old boy from Burry Port | :07:02. | :07:05.
have told this programme it's totally unacceptable their son | :07:06. | :07:08.
has had to wait two and a half years for a kidney operation. | :07:09. | :07:11.
Ethan Matthews was told in 2014 he needed to have his | :07:12. | :07:15.
left kidney removed because it wasn't working. | :07:16. | :07:18.
But he's still waiting for the operation and says, | :07:19. | :07:21.
without it, he can't live a normal life. | :07:22. | :07:24.
The family have been speaking to our reporter Aled Scofield. | :07:25. | :07:29.
Ethan Matthews looks like any typical 14-year-old. | :07:30. | :07:36.
But he can do the things most other teenagers do because | :07:37. | :07:38.
It has been really hard to cope in doing certain things. | :07:39. | :07:46.
I'm limited to do what I want and what I choose. | :07:47. | :07:49.
His problems started when a lump appeared | :07:50. | :07:51.
and he was left with a tract that wouldn't heal. | :07:52. | :07:59.
He was told his left kidney was no longer functioning | :08:00. | :08:02.
Despite being put on an urgent waiting list | :08:03. | :08:13.
he's still waiting to have this operation at the University Hospital | :08:14. | :08:15.
He has to take antibiotics on a daily basis | :08:16. | :08:19.
and have his dressings changed two or three times a week. | :08:20. | :08:22.
Ethan was given a date in January but the operation | :08:23. | :08:25.
was cancelled after he caught and affection. | :08:26. | :08:33.
His parents Ceri and Robert have complained about the delay. | :08:34. | :08:38.
They told me it has had a major impact on their son's life. | :08:39. | :08:41.
We can't go to the local swimming pool | :08:42. | :08:47.
because of the risk of infection on his side. | :08:48. | :08:49.
Contact sports, he's not allowed to perform in. | :08:50. | :08:53.
Do you think two and a half years is too long to wait? | :08:54. | :09:00.
The latest figures show there can be a delay for some. | :09:01. | :09:06.
77% of children start treatment within 26 weeks. | :09:07. | :09:09.
The Welsh government target is for 95% to be treated | :09:10. | :09:12.
13% start treatment with 36 weeks and 10% are waiting | :09:13. | :09:18.
This doctor is a retired paediatrician | :09:19. | :09:25.
and says the delay in Ethan's treatment is unacceptable. | :09:26. | :09:34.
This is very bad and if the University Hospital of Wales | :09:35. | :09:37.
then they should look for the service somewhere else. | :09:38. | :09:40.
The money from carrying out this procedure should | :09:41. | :09:44.
come out of the University Hospital of Wales' bank account. | :09:45. | :09:48.
For Ethan come his operation can't come soon enough so he can get on | :09:49. | :10:08.
The skies above the Brecon Beacons National Park are considered to be | :10:09. | :10:14.
but there are concerns that new streetlights are too bright - | :10:15. | :10:24.
and damaging its reputation as a stargazing destination. | :10:25. | :10:27.
The international body which granted the area the prestigious | :10:28. | :10:30.
dark-sky status in 2013 says it's investigating | :10:31. | :10:33.
after the lights were put in by the Welsh Government. | :10:34. | :10:37.
We can see our shadows now, whereas before we had to move around | :10:38. | :10:40.
We discovered last night that the sky is glowing. | :10:41. | :10:48.
We can see Brecon over the mountains, | :10:49. | :10:52.
The Welsh government installed the lights as | :10:53. | :11:10.
The Welsh Government says the lights are installed for road | :11:11. | :11:13.
safety and aren't intended to affect the environment. | :11:14. | :11:14.
But it will consider dimming the lights if it | :11:15. | :11:17.
Football and Swansea City have just four games left | :11:18. | :11:20.
League One champions Sheffield United | :11:21. | :11:28.
are set to resign Wales striker Ched Evans from Chesterfield. | :11:29. | :11:30.
The 28-year-old last played for the Blades in 2012 - | :11:31. | :11:33.
saw him serve two and a half years in prison. | :11:34. | :11:36.
and at a retrial last year, he was found not guilty. | :11:37. | :11:40.
Snow in the forecast - here's the weather with Sue. | :11:41. | :11:42.
Snow for some of us because it is turning colder for the first part of | :11:43. | :11:48.
the week with wintry showers and some sunny spells. This air mass | :11:49. | :11:54.
chart shows a cold front sinking southwards. Overnight, clear spells, | :11:55. | :12:01.
Frost forming in sheltered rural spots. Wintry in high ground. Cold | :12:02. | :12:07.
winds and temperatures hovering around freezing point or just above. | :12:08. | :12:15.
Tomorrow, a frosty start for some. Plenty of sunshine and more of a mix | :12:16. | :12:19.
of wintry sunshine and scattered showers. A greater chance of wintry | :12:20. | :12:27.
showers across north-east England, Northern Ireland and Scotland. A | :12:28. | :12:31.
warning of snow on high ground. A risk of hail and thunder, as well. | :12:32. | :12:40.
Cold, arctic winds. Highs of seven Celsius in some areas. The risk of | :12:41. | :12:49.
hail and snow on high ground. Feeling colder in the brisk | :12:50. | :12:56.
northerly winds. Wednesday, some early frosts, still feeling chilly | :12:57. | :13:00.
and further showers, could be wintry in the polls. Highs of 8-11dC. At | :13:01. | :13:08.
the end of the week, we lose the Arctic field, a return to milder | :13:09. | :13:11.
air. Into the bank holiday weekend. Thank you for watching - | :13:12. | :13:18.
from all of us on the | :13:19. | :13:25. |
