The "door is very much open" on the introduction of a law that

:00:12.:00:15.

would guarantee the rights of autistic people in Wales,

:00:16.:00:17.

The Social Services Minister says it's important to give other

:00:18.:00:21.

policies in relation to autism the "chance to bed in",

:00:22.:00:26.

but campaigners say an Autism Bill must be introduced.

:00:27.:00:29.

Here's our political reporter, James Williams.

:00:30.:00:35.

Half-term fun for these chidren at the Special Needs Action

:00:36.:00:37.

Among them, four-year-old Mason and six-year-old Logan,

:00:38.:00:42.

In the beginning, it was really hard.

:00:43.:00:48.

You literally get a diagnosis and you get handed a book -

:00:49.:00:54.

this is autism - and sent on your way with nothing.

:00:55.:00:57.

It's really isolating, and it's actually quite depressing.

:00:58.:01:00.

Mason and Logan are two of an estimated 34,000 children

:01:01.:01:03.

and adults in Wales with autism, a lifelong developmental disability

:01:04.:01:14.

that affects how people perceive the world and interact with others.

:01:15.:01:19.

There are varying degrees of autism that affects a wider

:01:20.:01:21.

community of around 136,000, including families and carers,

:01:22.:01:23.

That's why a few weeks ago in the Senate, opposition parties

:01:24.:01:28.

called on the Welsh Government to introduce a law that

:01:29.:01:30.

would guarantee the rights of autistic people.

:01:31.:01:34.

The motion was defeated because Labour AMs and Liberal

:01:35.:01:36.

Democrat Kirsty Williams - who's a member of the Welsh

:01:37.:01:39.

But campaigners maintain an Autism Act is needed.

:01:40.:01:44.

The Welsh Government has an autism strategy.

:01:45.:01:50.

It was the first of its kind in the United Kingdom and it has

:01:51.:01:53.

achieved a great deal in terms of raising awareness,

:01:54.:01:57.

but there's a real feeling now that more needs to be done

:01:58.:02:00.

The door is very much open and we're keeping everything

:02:01.:02:05.

However, as I say, the act and the integrated autism service -

:02:06.:02:11.

both major things in terms of delivering to people with autism

:02:12.:02:23.

- are only six months old, so we do need to give them a chance

:02:24.:02:27.

Ultimately, whether it's a new strategy or an act,

:02:28.:02:31.

it's about ensuring that Logan, Mason and others with autism

:02:32.:02:33.

You can see more on this on Sunday Politics Wales,

:02:34.:02:37.

tomorrow from 11am, here on BBC One Wales.

A large fire which destroyed part of the main building of a Swansea

:02:40.:02:42.

80 five firefighters tackled the blaze at Gower College,

in Sketty, which started in the library on the third floor.

:02:46.:02:48.

Events have been held in Maesteg to celebrate the town's hospital,

:02:49.:02:51.

which opened a century ago, thanks to thousands of miners

:02:52.:02:53.

Following a service and a march through the town, a bronze

:02:54.:02:57.

The hospital was originally run by the Red Cross, and cared

:02:58.:03:03.

for injured soldiers as they returned from World War One.

:03:04.:03:06.

Around 3,000 people have taken part in the 34th

:03:07.:03:14.

Joanne Nelson broke the female record, with her time of 3 hours,

:03:15.:03:18.

The overall winner was Russell Bentley,

:03:19.:03:23.

The event, which circles the foothills of Snowdon,

:03:24.:03:27.

is considered by some to be amongst the toughest marathons in Europe.

:03:28.:03:37.

Oh, I'm absolutely over the moon, yeah.

:03:38.:03:39.

But the conditions were great this year.

:03:40.:03:44.

Last year, it was chucking it down, but this year was fine,

:03:45.:03:49.

Er, this is the hardest thing I've ever done, yeah.

:03:50.:03:53.

And I had my family there halfway to spur me on,

:03:54.:04:03.

Football, and Neil Warnock ended his unbeaten run

:04:04.:04:10.

as Cardiff City manager with a 1-0 defeat at home to Wigan.

:04:11.:04:13.

Newport County got their first victory under new manager

:04:14.:04:15.

Graham Westley, with a 3-1 win at Accrington Stanley.

:04:16.:04:18.

And Wrexham fought back from two goals down to rescue

:04:19.:04:20.

Rugby, and the Ospreys were victorious this

:04:21.:04:27.

afternoon in the second of the Pro-12 Welsh derbies.

:04:28.:04:29.

They beat the Dragons by 35-17 at the Liberty Stadium.

:04:30.:04:32.

Two tries from Keelan Giles helped secure a bonus-point win.

:04:33.:04:39.

A quick look at the weather, and tomorrow starts rather grey.

:04:40.:04:42.

Cloud will linger for much of the day, with further

:04:43.:04:44.

A few brighter spells are possible in the afternoon.

:04:45.:04:47.

Feeling mild, with highs of 14 Celsius.

:04:48.:04:54.

Our next update is at 6:05pm tomorrow evening.

:04:55.:04:55.

But for now, from everyone on the weekend team, have a
