That's it.

0:00:000:00:01

Good evening.

0:00:140:00:15

The Welsh Labour Leader says he would support the UK borrowing

0:00:150:00:25

an extra ?500 billion if the party wins

0:00:250:00:27

the general election.

0:00:270:00:28

On a special leaders' debate programme on Sunday Politics Wales,

0:00:280:00:31

Carwyn Jones said "there's never been a better time to borrow".

0:00:310:00:33

Here's our political correspondent, Arwyn Jones

0:00:330:00:37

Today, for the first time since the election was called,

0:00:370:00:40

the leaders of the five main parties in Wales went head-to-head.

0:00:400:00:44

Top of the agenda, Brexit and the economy.

0:00:440:00:48

And from Labour's leader here, support for plans of ?500 billion

0:00:480:00:51

of borrowing to help give the UK economy a boost.

0:00:510:00:53

In 1945, a Labour government came in after the war,

0:00:530:00:55

when things were much, much worse than they are now,

0:00:550:00:58

when the UK was in a far more difficult state.

0:00:580:01:00

Yet it created the NHS, it made sure the economy was rebuilt.

0:01:000:01:03

It built houses.

0:01:030:01:05

All these things were done at a far more difficult time.

0:01:050:01:08

If they could do it, there is no reason why a Labour government

0:01:080:01:11

cannot do it after June.

0:01:110:01:12

Two years ago, the Conservatives made a cast-iron promise

0:01:120:01:15

not to raise any taxes.

0:01:150:01:16

This time around, they are refusing to rule it out while explaining why

0:01:160:01:19

they are a low tax party.

0:01:190:01:21

People will not put in the time, they will not create

0:01:210:01:24

the opportunities in the economy, entrepreneurs will not invest

0:01:240:01:26

and ultimately you will see a contraction of the economy.

0:01:260:01:30

So we are the low tax party and we stand on that record.

0:01:300:01:34

What we are also about is making sure that the public finances

0:01:340:01:37

are in good health.

0:01:370:01:46

Plaid Cymru go into this election uncertain if the party

0:01:480:01:51

leader will stand or not.

0:01:510:01:57

Today she said they faced what she cold grave threats

0:01:570:01:59

which needed to be defended.

0:01:590:02:00

We are under threat from an extreme toady Brexit which risks pulling

0:02:000:02:03

is out of the single market.

0:02:030:02:05

That risks many jobs in Wales.

0:02:050:02:06

So as well as the future of public services and continued cuts,

0:02:060:02:09

people also face a downturn in their economic outlook.

0:02:090:02:14

Ukip have struggled to find their feet after a heady

0:02:140:02:16

heights of the Brexit referendum victory but insists there

0:02:160:02:18

is a role for the party.

0:02:180:02:23

I intend to be a candidate myself to give a lead because elections

0:02:230:02:31

for Ukip our work in progress always and one election leads to another.

0:02:310:02:34

And we are still building our support base and this is going to be

0:02:340:02:38

an important opportunity.

0:02:380:02:39

The Liberal Democrats are trying to appeal to those who voted

0:02:390:02:41

remained in the EU referendum and to rule out returning

0:02:410:02:44

to a coalition.

0:02:440:02:45

We're not going to have a Labour government

0:02:450:02:47

at the end of this process.

0:02:470:02:48

We are not great to have a coalition government.

0:02:480:02:50

But it is very important that the stories of all the parties

0:02:500:02:53

are very clear on what is at stake and the Liberal Democrats will be

0:02:530:02:56

doing just that in the weeks ahead.

0:02:560:02:58

The opening round of leaders debates is over about six

0:02:580:03:01

weeks until polling day, there's plenty more debating be had.

0:03:010:03:03

A service, to mark the 70th anniversary of one of Wales' worst

0:03:030:03:06

maritime disasters, has been held near Porthcawl.

0:03:060:03:08

On this day in 1947, 47 people died when the SS Samtampa

0:03:080:03:10

ran aground on rocks at Sker Point, after attempting to

0:03:100:03:13

sail through a gale.

0:03:130:03:14

Most families, certainly my family talked a great deal about that

0:03:140:03:20

dreadful night when so many lives were lost.

0:03:200:03:23

70 years on and the scars of this disaster is still mark

0:03:230:03:27

the community here.

0:03:270:03:35

Crowds gathered to remember the 39 man crew of the SS Samtampa

0:03:350:03:38

and the eight lifeboatmen from the Mumbles

0:03:380:03:40

who'd tried to save them.

0:03:400:03:41

There off the rocky South Wales coast lies the broken hulk

0:03:410:03:44

of the 7000 tonne Steam Ship Samtampa.

0:03:440:03:45

In a 70 mph gale, the SS Samtampa ran aground off

0:03:450:03:48

Sker Point off Porthcawl.

0:03:480:03:51

The alarm was raised in Mumbles and a lifeboat was launched

0:03:510:03:53

in ferocious conditions.

0:03:530:03:54

The crew was hit by a high wave, all eight were swept to their deaths.

0:03:540:03:58

They talk about people having tar their windows several miles

0:03:580:04:01

inland and the acrid smell of oil.

0:04:010:04:05

Children from schools being stopped from going

0:04:050:04:09

on the beach around, you know, Spring holidays, etc.

0:04:090:04:12

It was a devastating event.

0:04:120:04:14

We stand here today and none of us can even think

0:04:140:04:18

what it was like on that night.

0:04:180:04:20

Aside from today's memorial, there are constant reminders

0:04:200:04:22

of the tragedy that happened on these rocks.

0:04:220:04:26

The crews here today have told me that these blue bits are melted

0:04:260:04:29

copper where they burnt the wreck of the lifeboat.

0:04:290:04:32

And this is one of the surviving nails.

0:04:320:04:35

Today's crews joined the service from the sea,

0:04:350:04:38

to pay their own tribute to their predecessors

0:04:380:04:47

and to show their courage will never be forgotten.

0:04:470:04:49

Thousands of Welsh runners have been taking part

0:04:490:04:51

in the London Marathon today.

0:04:510:04:52

It was a very successful race for Swansea Harrier, Josh Griffiths,

0:04:520:04:55

who was the first UK athlete to cross the line.

0:04:550:04:58

But it was his team mate, Matthew Rees who stole

0:04:580:05:00

the headlines, for helping a struggling competitor

0:05:000:05:02

cross the line.

0:05:020:05:04

Rees took hold of David Wyeth just over 100 metres from the finish

0:05:040:05:07

and guided him up The Mall.

0:05:070:05:09

He's been praised for epitomising the spirit of the race.

0:05:090:05:12

Someone had to help him.

0:05:120:05:15

I'm sure someone else would have if it wasn't me.

0:05:150:05:18

So, yeah, we both had run 26 miles.

0:05:180:05:20

We had to make that final 300 metres.

0:05:200:05:22

And the crowd were incredible and really helped me and him

0:05:220:05:24

get to the line too.

0:05:240:05:27

Cricket - and Glamorgan have finished Day three

0:05:270:05:37

runs behind the hosts.

0:05:480:05:56

In their second innings, Leicestershire are currently 200-3.

0:05:560:05:58

The weather forecast and cloud will thicken later,

0:05:580:06:00

with patchy rain moving in from the north overnight.
