Memorial services up under way in Marikana for the 44 miners killed. | :00:18. | :00:22.
Germany and France are to hold talks to discuss whether to give | :00:22. | :00:30.
Greece more time to make repayments. And over 50 people are killed in | :00:30. | :00:40.
:00:40. | :00:40. | ||
clashes in Kenya. Prince Harry's blushes are spared | :00:40. | :00:44.
after a British newspapers decide not to publish pictures of him | :00:44. | :00:51.
naked. And plans for a bullet train in the USA are met with opposition | :00:51. | :01:01.
:01:01. | :01:07. | ||
in California. Memorial services are taking place in South Africa to | :01:07. | :01:10.
commemorate the deaths of the 44 people killed during the miners' | :01:10. | :01:17.
strike last week. Last Thursday 34 miners were killed when police | :01:17. | :01:23.
opened fire. Previously 10 people, two of them police officers have | :01:23. | :01:28.
died in violent clashes. Services have begun with a ceremony in the | :01:28. | :01:38.
:01:38. | :01:39. | ||
town of Marikana where the killings took place. The community of | :01:39. | :01:44.
Marikana mourn their dead. Hymns, prayers and tributes for those | :01:44. | :01:49.
killed in the industrial unrest. 34 in a single tragic moment of | :01:49. | :01:58.
gunfire last week. And an appeal for reconciliation. To go from a | :01:58. | :02:08.
:02:08. | :02:11. | ||
broken this to wholeness. To go from wrong doing to forgiveness. | :02:11. | :02:21.
:02:21. | :02:25. | ||
There is little mood for compromise. There should be docks, not killing, | :02:25. | :02:30.
pleads the South African president to an angry audience. | :02:30. | :02:34.
It is gruelling work deep below ground. The wages are $500 per | :02:34. | :02:40.
month say the miners. But what bonuses and allowances that is more | :02:40. | :02:45.
than doubled claims the company and a 10 % raised is due in October. | :02:45. | :02:51.
Even so their living conditions remain squalid and poor. There is | :02:51. | :02:54.
now concern that the sentiment of unfairness will spread rapidly | :02:54. | :02:59.
throughout South Africa's mining industry. | :02:59. | :03:03.
The police kept their distance from the service. Modern South Africa | :03:03. | :03:08.
was not meant to be like this. More memorials are being held | :03:08. | :03:13.
across the country. Many of the dead were migrant workers whose | :03:13. | :03:20.
bodies have been returned to their home villages. | :03:20. | :03:25.
A short while ago I spoke to the deputy chairman of the South | :03:25. | :03:30.
African Institute of International Affairs. He is also the brother of | :03:30. | :03:40.
:03:40. | :03:43. | ||
a former president of South Africa. South Africa is in a state of shock. | :03:43. | :03:47.
We thought we were over police and massacring demonstrations which is | :03:47. | :03:56.
what we love with during their apartheid era. We are now seeing a | :03:56. | :04:04.
repetition of this. The country is in as state of shock. What needs to | :04:04. | :04:14.
:04:14. | :04:16. | ||
be done to heal the country? There mining industry, which is the | :04:16. | :04:22.
flashpoint of the issue, has been at the same way for hundreds of | :04:22. | :04:32.
:04:32. | :04:40. | ||
years. It was set up for her diamond mining. It is based on low | :04:40. | :04:50.
:04:50. | :04:54. | ||
wages. Their way of operating of the last 140 years has to go. | :04:54. | :04:59.
reaction of the Police has shocked many people in South Africa. What | :04:59. | :05:05.
can heal the rift between the police and citizens? Since the | :05:05. | :05:15.
:05:15. | :05:15. | ||
President came into power he has reversed policies brought in by | :05:15. | :05:22.
Mandela. During the apartheid era or the police were militarised. | :05:22. | :05:29.
They were up paramilitary force to suppress social movements. The | :05:29. | :05:36.
current president has in three militarised the police. -- he has | :05:36. | :05:44.
no demilitarised. Only recently have their heads of various | :05:44. | :05:46.
churches brought together the two sides in this discussion. Why has | :05:46. | :05:52.
it taken so long for this to happen? What has been happening in | :05:52. | :05:57.
South Africa in the last 18 years or-so, but especially in the last | :05:57. | :06:05.
10 years, is that there has been a huge amount of disintegration of | :06:05. | :06:12.
civil society. Civil society has lost its cohesion. The South | :06:12. | :06:17.
African Council of churches is in a shambles. This is the first time in | :06:17. | :06:22.
many years we have seen the South African Council of churches | :06:22. | :06:32.
:06:32. | :06:40. | ||
appearing in public in this particular way. | :06:41. | :06:47.
Their ANC itself has been it de mobilise. Conflict has been sold in | :06:47. | :06:52.
the churches. There has been a lot of upheaval under the surface in | :06:52. | :06:56.
this country, but it is only now because of the killings that they | :06:56. | :07:02.
are becoming visible to the wide world. Something needs to be done | :07:02. | :07:11.
by the a authorities. A South Africa is being touted as a great | :07:11. | :07:16.
tourist destination. That will certainly affect that industry. | :07:16. | :07:23.
you say we have a huge tourist industry. In Cape Town are there is | :07:23. | :07:27.
a huge upheaval of gangs fighting amongst themselves. Many children | :07:27. | :07:32.
are being killed in the crossfire of the gangs fighting. The | :07:32. | :07:37.
government was asked by provisional governments to send in the army to | :07:37. | :07:41.
restrain the gangsters. The current president has refused to do so. | :07:41. | :07:48.
There is lot happening in South Africa that is unpalatable but the | :07:48. | :07:52.
government appears to be oblivious to it, especially the current | :07:52. | :08:01.
president. Francois Hollande travels to Berlin | :08:01. | :08:04.
later to meet German Chancellor Angela Merkel. They will discuss | :08:04. | :08:10.
whether to give Greece more time to make the cuts required by the | :08:10. | :08:17.
bailout. Angela Merkel has already said that Greece must stick to its | :08:17. | :08:21.
commitments. As the ongoing tragedy of the Greek | :08:21. | :08:25.
economy deepens, the leaders of France and Germany will meet yet | :08:25. | :08:32.
again to discuss the fate of Greece. They will also meet the Greek Prime | :08:32. | :08:37.
Minister later this week. He is pleading with these two to give | :08:37. | :08:43.
Greece more time to bring down its borrowing. Who can blame him? Their | :08:43. | :08:49.
economy here is on its knees with unemployment at 25 %. Greece is in | :08:49. | :08:57.
its 5th year of recession and austerity. He has already pleaded | :08:57. | :09:05.
with John Cobb Junker, ahead of the European finance ministers. | :09:05. | :09:08.
TRANSLATION: that only thing for this government, for the Greek | :09:08. | :09:14.
people to do, is to move towards recovery as soon as possible. | :09:14. | :09:17.
in a press conference on Wednesday the German Chancellor was not | :09:17. | :09:24.
willing to make any firm commitments. TRANSLATION: it will | :09:24. | :09:28.
not be any different from what has been said in the past. We will not | :09:28. | :09:32.
find any solutions on Friday. Instead we will wait for the report | :09:32. | :09:39.
and then decisions will be made. But there is pressure at home for | :09:39. | :09:47.
the Greek president to secure the deal. It seems this will be a | :09:47. | :09:57.
:09:57. | :10:08. | ||
They eurozone. It is important. We know what is going on in Greece, | :10:08. | :10:11.
but they cannot ignore the relent this data. | :10:11. | :10:17.
Absolutely. Today they will be watching these | :10:17. | :10:21.
numbers. These numbers are extremely important. They are | :10:21. | :10:26.
fundamentally important to any economy. | :10:26. | :10:36.
:10:36. | :10:39. | ||
These numbers are forward looking. What we have seen is that these | :10:39. | :10:45.
numbers continue to shrink for the 7th consecutive month. The big | :10:45. | :10:49.
problem is that we are starting to see the rot that started it on to | :10:49. | :10:55.
the periphery of the euro-zone taking hold in the core. Their | :10:55. | :10:58.
economies that we were relying on to keep the rest of the region | :10:58. | :11:08.
:11:08. | :11:10. | ||
afloat such as Germany and France, have slid back into reverse. The | :11:10. | :11:14.
French numbers continue to shrink for the 6th consecutive month. It | :11:14. | :11:22.
all points to their eurozone heading into its second recession | :11:23. | :11:26.
in three years. Their extras I have been talking to this morning told | :11:26. | :11:30.
me that there are big problems for Europe, but it is not just a | :11:30. | :11:35.
European problem. We are seeing a tandem effect. | :11:35. | :11:42.
Germany was hit by this. Renewed contraction in the services sector. | :11:42. | :11:48.
But also the manufacturing sector is export dependent. Exports have | :11:48. | :11:53.
fallen. This is endemic in the global economy. The global economy | :11:53. | :11:59.
has hit a soft patch. We have seen this also in trade statistics for | :11:59. | :12:04.
China and Japan. This is not a European thing. It is a global | :12:04. | :12:10.
economic slowdown. There are also worries for the | :12:10. | :12:15.
Australian airline because it posted its first annual loss since | :12:15. | :12:23.
it was privatised in 1995. And all of this and at high fuel costs. | :12:23. | :12:30.
We will have more on that, but first this report from Australia. | :12:30. | :12:37.
This is an iconic airline with chronic finances. Losses of $245 | :12:37. | :12:44.
million for the last year were announced. Industrial disputes, | :12:44. | :12:54.
high fuel, and restructuring costs have all played a part. | :12:54. | :13:00.
We have been through an exceptional period. Yet over the course of the | :13:00. | :13:05.
last year we have made progress in advancing our overall strategy. Our | :13:05. | :13:10.
biggest challenge is our international operation. The | :13:10. | :13:17.
transformation is on track. Our goal is to return to profit and | :13:17. | :13:20.
ensure that we are at the flagship carrier. | :13:20. | :13:25.
The domestic operation is doing well, controlling 65 % of the | :13:25. | :13:30.
market. It is the international arm where the problems lie. It lost | :13:30. | :13:35.
$450 million last year, in part because of greater competition in | :13:35. | :13:44.
China. The usually outperform most other | :13:44. | :13:52.
airlines, but in this case they have been outperformed. This is the | :13:52. | :13:57.
worst loss since 1953. It is significant. | :13:57. | :14:01.
The airline is trying to deal with its problems by splitting the | :14:01. | :14:05.
company in two. One company looks after the domestic market and the | :14:05. | :14:08.
other looks after the international side. | :14:09. | :14:15.
There is talk of the aviation world about a tie-up between court has | :14:15. | :14:20.
and another -- between the Australian airline and another | :14:20. | :14:27.
airline. Shareholders and markets want the | :14:27. | :14:37.
:14:37. | :14:37. | ||
The world's largest drinks company, Diageo, posted a jump in profits. | :14:37. | :14:41.
The maker of Guiness, Smirnoff vodka and Johnnie Walker whisky. It | :14:41. | :14:44.
says growth in Latin America, Africa and Asia were the key | :14:44. | :14:48.
drivers between profits of almost $2 billion. It has helped the | :14:48. | :14:54.
company, which operates in 180 companies, to offset the weaker | :14:54. | :14:58.
sales it's so near to its home in Europe. We asked the chief | :14:58. | :15:02.
executive about the impact of Europe's economic problems. | :15:02. | :15:09.
results in Europe, our sales contracted by 1%. But there are | :15:09. | :15:13.
growth opportunities to be had in Europe. If you look at our very | :15:13. | :15:18.
high and brands like Johnnie Walker Blue Label and tanker rates, we | :15:18. | :15:23.
grew those by 10 %. Europe does need to sort itself out | :15:23. | :15:28.
economically. Having said that, I don't think it is as dire as | :15:28. | :15:38.
:15:38. | :15:38. | ||
The computing giant Hewlett-Packard has announced a monumental | :15:38. | :15:44.
quarterly loss of nearly $9 billion. It was pretty much forced to write | :15:44. | :15:48.
down the value of some assets and really take a hefty reorganisation | :15:48. | :15:52.
will charge. The world's largest technology company did attempt to | :15:52. | :15:56.
reassure investors and said they are making decent progress despite | :15:56. | :16:01.
those head wins. Egypt has requested a $4.8 billion loan from | :16:01. | :16:04.
the International Monetary Fund to help stabilise and revive its | :16:04. | :16:09.
ailing economy. The request was made during talks in Cairo between | :16:09. | :16:13.
President Mohamed Morsi and the IMF chief, Christine Lagarde. The IMF's | :16:13. | :16:17.
technical team will visit Egypt next month to study their economic | :16:18. | :16:21.
programme and discuss possible forms of financial support from the | :16:21. | :16:26.
IMF. The US economy could face recession if Congress does and | :16:26. | :16:31.
avert a so-called fiscal cliff which could seek US GDP shrinks by | :16:31. | :16:39.
half a % next year. That simply refers to Congress trying to agree | :16:39. | :16:43.
to spending cuts and tax rises. A report by the Congressional Budget | :16:43. | :16:48.
Office says it expects the US economy to continue at M Shed -- | :16:49. | :16:52.
modest pace for the rest of 2012, but warns that substantial changes | :16:52. | :16:57.
to tax and spending policies would cause the US to to back into | :16:57. | :17:07.
recession in 2013. On that cheery news, well, Diageo is doing well. | :17:07. | :17:17.
:17:17. | :17:18. | ||
It's not so great. Plenty to come on BBC News. British newspapers | :17:18. | :17:28.
:17:28. | :17:29. | ||
choose not to publish leaked photos The weather throughout the so- | :17:29. | :17:33.
called British summer months has hit the bee population. The | :17:33. | :17:37.
situation is being described as the worst in nearly 30 years. The | :17:37. | :17:42.
National Bee Unit says that heavy rain has made it difficult for bees | :17:42. | :17:48.
to gather food, putting them at risk of starvation. Much like us | :17:48. | :17:52.
humans, honey bees aren't too keen on venturing out in wet weather. | :17:52. | :17:57.
Torrential rain in June followed by downpours in July and August have | :17:57. | :18:01.
all limited their time foraging for food. And without gathering enough | :18:01. | :18:07.
nectar and pollen, some have been staffed. Right in the middle of the | :18:07. | :18:11.
summer, in the middle of June when the nectar flows should have been | :18:11. | :18:16.
at their very best, bees were starving. So beekeepers have had to | :18:16. | :18:21.
feed their bee s, they feed them on sugar syrup. I've never known that | :18:21. | :18:27.
before. A familiar buzz has been missing from Ian Storrar's orchard. | :18:27. | :18:32.
Normally he can depend on bees to pollinate his crop, but this year | :18:32. | :18:36.
three-quarters of the trees haven't borne fruit. This apple tree would | :18:36. | :18:42.
normally be covered in fruit. This year, as you can see, it's almost | :18:42. | :18:47.
totally barren, except for this brand here. I've lost about 75-80 % | :18:47. | :18:52.
of my crop. This year's honey crop is also likely to suffer. Some | :18:52. | :18:57.
beekeepers are predicting a drop of up to 60 % on last year. And | :18:57. | :19:03.
there's one final sting in the tail. The rain may also have put a damper | :19:03. | :19:07.
on mating for Virgin Queen Bees, threatening colony members in the | :19:07. | :19:15.
future. More than 3000 people have been evacuated from mountainous | :19:15. | :19:20.
areas of Taiwan, as a powerful Typhoo and approaches the island. | :19:20. | :19:23.
Typhoon Tembin is due to meet land at around midday local time on | :19:23. | :19:30.
Friday. Winds of 150 kilometres an hour are expected, along with more | :19:30. | :19:34.
than a metre of rain. Locals fear this could cause landslides. Jordan | :19:34. | :19:39.
has poured three of its athletes facing sexual assault charges out | :19:39. | :19:42.
of the London 2012 Paralympic Games. The three athletes were arrested on | :19:42. | :19:46.
Monday in Northern Ireland, where Jordan's Paralympic squad is Chick | :19:46. | :19:51.
-- is training. The Jordanian government has said that the three, | :19:51. | :19:55.
who were all members of the apparent -- power lifting team, | :19:55. | :20:05.

The headlines. Memorial services take place in South Africa to | :20:09. | :20:14.
commemorate the deaths of 44 people who were killed in a miners pay | :20:14. | :20:18.
protest. Kenyan police are trying to bring two rival communities | :20:18. | :20:22.
together after more than 50 people were killed in clashes in the south | :20:22. | :20:27.
east of the country. Let's stay with Kenya, where police are trying | :20:27. | :20:31.
to bring these rival communities together for a peace meeting. 50 | :20:31. | :20:34.
people were killed in the clashes in the south-east of the country. | :20:34. | :20:37.
Most of those victims were women and children who were hacked or | :20:37. | :20:42.
burned to death. Police say the attack was carried out by become a | :20:43. | :20:46.
militia men against ethnic Orma herdsmen. They are in dispute over | :20:46. | :20:52.
land and grazing rights. I should warn you you may find the images in | :20:52. | :20:58.
this report disturbing. Burned-out homes like empty. But the signs of | :20:58. | :21:03.
the deadly attack which devastated this village are still visible. Not | :21:03. | :21:09.
much was spared, not even the animals. Those who survived a | :21:09. | :21:14.
inconsolable. And this is why. Most of those killed were women and | :21:14. | :21:20.
children, hacked to death with machetes. His eye witness their | :21:20. | :21:24.
eyes, they started attacking us at 5am and started burning houses from | :21:25. | :21:29.
that direction and also killing cattle. I was in the house and then | :21:29. | :21:37.
saw them when some of them entered the houses. I ran away. This man | :21:37. | :21:41.
says the entire area was surrounded and some of them had weapons that a | :21:41. | :21:45.
villager would not have come and that's how they killed people. The | :21:45. | :21:51.
attack is believed to be collected -- to be connected to land disputes | :21:51. | :21:55.
between the Drive and Pokomo groups. It's not the first time the tribes | :21:55. | :22:05.
:22:05. | :22:06. | ||
have clashed. All this issue is about revenge. Everybody is just | :22:06. | :22:12.
stamping. We are asking our people to make peace, so they can become | :22:12. | :22:15.
peace-loving again. It looks as though it is entering through this | :22:15. | :22:19.
year and coming out this ear. the most deadly outbreak of | :22:19. | :22:26.
violence in Kenya in over four years. The police have been brought | :22:26. | :22:28.
into court -- calm the situation. The people here have been left | :22:28. | :22:38.

Immediate row was brewing in Britain after revealing photos of | :22:39. | :22:43.
the Queen's grandson, Prince Harry, were published on an American | :22:43. | :22:47.
website. So far, British newspapers have decided not to print the | :22:47. | :22:50.
pictures. They were taken while the Prince was on holiday in Las Vegas | :22:50. | :22:54.
at the weekend. Royal officials confirmed that the Press Complaints | :22:54. | :22:59.
Commission has been contacted over privacy concerns. Our reporter at | :22:59. | :23:03.
St James's Palace in central London, where Prince Harry's offices are | :23:03. | :23:07.
based, said that the issue of privacy has come to the fore again. | :23:07. | :23:13.
I have the official statement here. They've said they did contact the | :23:13. | :23:15.
Press Complaints Commission over concerns that some British | :23:15. | :23:19.
newspapers were considering publishing those photographs. The | :23:19. | :23:24.
officials there say that if publications have been made, that | :23:24. | :23:27.
constituted an unjustified intrusion into his privacy and | :23:27. | :23:31.
breached the editor's code of practice, and this morning it seems | :23:31. | :23:35.
from the papers in the UK that they have kept their word. There is | :23:35. | :23:39.
still no publication of those photos of Prince Harry in Las Vegas. | :23:39. | :23:43.
Maybe the British press are mind all that Lord Justice Leveson is | :23:43. | :23:48.
going to begin writing his report into the standards on the British | :23:48. | :23:52.
press. Now to the US, where President Obama has put his faith | :23:52. | :23:55.
in big infrastructure projects as a way of helping the country out of | :23:55. | :24:00.
recession. Among his plans is a high-speed rail link between Los | :24:00. | :24:04.
Angeles and San Francisco. The first leg of this track is going to | :24:04. | :24:08.
cut through California's Central Valley. Questions are already being | :24:08. | :24:14.
asked about its viability. The cows of California don't know what is | :24:14. | :24:19.
coming. The train is going to go right through the middle? North and | :24:19. | :24:23.
south in this direction. About 50 feet away from where we are | :24:23. | :24:28.
standing. This is some of the most productive farmland in the world. | :24:28. | :24:32.
And it will be the first place in America to have its own bullet | :24:32. | :24:38.
train. Not surprisingly they are curious as to why. If the line does | :24:38. | :24:41.
come through, the impact of going to be tremendous. It will go | :24:41. | :24:45.
through where we store our feet, through a crowd of cows. It takes | :24:45. | :24:52.
at my dad's house, blogs to our facility and put the train way to | :24:52. | :24:56.
close. The high-speed train will collect it LA and San Francisco, if | :24:56. | :25:01.
it's ever finished. It will take decades to build and will cost at | :25:01. | :25:03.
least $68 billion, and it is intended to help bring development | :25:03. | :25:08.
to a very poor part of the state. California is the 9th largest | :25:08. | :25:11.
economy in the world. One of the reasons we are where we are is | :25:11. | :25:15.
because of prior investments like this in the state water system, the | :25:15. | :25:19.
state universities and the state highway system. You have to invest | :25:19. | :25:23.
in order to succeed and be competitive and provide a quality | :25:23. | :25:28.
of life for people in this state. There's been big debate at the | :25:28. | :25:32.
state capital in Sacramento. California owes billions. While | :25:32. | :25:37.
funding Rail, the Governor is asking people to vote themselves a | :25:37. | :25:41.
tax increase just to stop schools from closing. They say California's | :25:41. | :25:44.
best days are behind us. That's not true. We are building for the | :25:44. | :25:49.
future. One of the most polarising debates in American politics ahead | :25:49. | :25:52.
of the elections around government spending. The Republicans want a | :25:52. | :25:56.
far less. The Democrats are backing big projects like high-speed rail. | :25:56. | :26:01.
Billions being put towards future infrastructure. But with a country | :26:01. | :26:06.
so much in debt, is now the right time? Is it ever the right time? | :26:06. | :26:10.
The massive Hoover dam was built at great expense during the Great | :26:10. | :26:14.
Depression and created many jobs. On the first US transcontinental | :26:14. | :26:18.
railway was commissioned in the middle of the American Civil War. | :26:18. | :26:21.
Today's rail system needs investment but the people advising | :26:21. | :26:25.
politicians have to spend money said it was a bad idea. We said | :26:25. | :26:29.
that given those uncertainties regarding the funding, that they | :26:29. | :26:32.
should and move forward with the project until a better funding plan | :26:32. | :26:37.
was put forward. But phase one is going ahead here in the farming | :26:37. | :26:42.
belt. Taxpayers will have to pay many billions more before the | :26:42. | :26:45. |
