accounts. The Israelis were first off the mark saying one of their | :14:07. | :14:13.
vehicles on the Golan Heights was hit by gunfire from inside Syria. | :14:13. | :14:23.
:14:23. | :14:24. | ||
Syrian - Israeli forces then responded. It said an Israeli | :14:25. | :14:29.
vehicle crossed the ceasefire line into Syrian territory proper. Then | :14:29. | :14:35.
tried to approach a village in which there were armed terrorist groups. | :14:35. | :14:40.
This vehicle was then fired on by Syrian forces who destroyed it and | :14:40. | :14:44.
its contents, they say. This provoking the Israelis to fire two | :14:44. | :14:49.
rockets back at a Syrian army position in the nearby village. | :14:49. | :14:53.
Quite different accounts, but showing that something did happen | :14:53. | :14:59.
and showing the potential for things. The Syrian statement did | :14:59. | :15:03.
warn that any further, what it called attempt to breach the | :15:03. | :15:06.
country's sovereignty, would attract an immediate response. | :15:06. | :15:16.
For now, thank you. Stay with us. Still to come: As | :15:16. | :15:19.
Learjets celebrates its 50th anniversary, why the age of the | :15:19. | :15:27.
private jet isn't over, even at a time of economic austerity. | :15:27. | :15:33.
Here, plans to legalise gay marriage are just about on track after the | :15:33. | :15:37.
Prime Minister was offered a lifeline by his political rivals in | :15:37. | :15:40.
the Labour Party. Some of his own Conservative MPs had attempted to | :15:40. | :15:45.
derail the measure by trying to extend civil partnerships to | :15:45. | :15:50.
heterosexual couples. On Monday night, the amendment was defeated by | :15:50. | :16:00.
:16:00. | :16:02. | ||
375 votes to 70. THE SPEAKER: Order. Order. The ayes | :16:02. | :16:08.
to the right 70, the noes to the left 375. The noes have it. The noes | :16:08. | :16:13.
have it. This was the moment gay marriages in England and Wales came | :16:13. | :16:17.
closer than they have ever been before. Attempts to water down the | :16:17. | :16:21.
Government's plans, or delay them, had failed. Earlier, the Minister | :16:21. | :16:25.
charged with turning this legislation into law set out why she | :16:25. | :16:30.
thought it was so important. Marriage is the bedrock of society | :16:30. | :16:34.
and providing a stable foundation for families and communities. We | :16:34. | :16:38.
want to ensure that people aren't prevented from marrying because they | :16:38. | :16:45.
love someone of the same sex. means there will be an immediate | :16:46. | :16:49.
review into extending civil partnerships, first introduced for | :16:49. | :16:54.
gay couples, to heterosexual couples, too. More than 100 Tory MPs | :16:54. | :16:57.
registered their objections to different parts of the legislation. | :16:57. | :17:02.
Some in very strong terms. I fear that the playing field is not being | :17:02. | :17:05.
levelled. I believe that the pendulum is now swinging so far the | :17:05. | :17:12.
other way and there are plenty in the aggressive homosexual community | :17:12. | :17:16.
who see this as a stepping stone to something even further. There will | :17:16. | :17:20.
be further debate on the subject in the Commons today and then, it will | :17:20. | :17:24.
be discussed in the Lords. Last night's vote brings gay marriage | :17:25. | :17:29.
ceremonies a step closer. The first could take place as soon as the | :17:29. | :17:36.
summer of next year. The health of the Pakistani | :17:36. | :17:40.
politician now. You will remember he injured his back after falling from | :17:40. | :17:47.
a makeshift platform at an election rally. He has now managed to stand | :17:47. | :17:52.
up and had a spinal brace fitted after a series of x-rays. They are | :17:52. | :18:00.
hoping he could be released from hospital tomorrow. | :18:00. | :18:06.
This is BBC World News. The latest headlines: A giant tornado has cut a | :18:06. | :18:10.
swathe of destruction through Oklahoma City killing at least 91 | :18:10. | :18:15.
people, including 20 children. A number of youngsters have been | :18:16. | :18:18.
rescued from the rubble of their schools there. Many others are still | :18:18. | :18:25.
missing. The emergency crews have been | :18:25. | :18:29.
searching for survivors in the rubble in Oklahoma through the | :18:29. | :18:32.
night. The two-mile-wide tornado flattened homes, businesses and | :18:32. | :18:37.
schools. Search and rescue staff say that 24 children are believed to | :18:37. | :18:42.
have been killed in one of the hard-hit elementary schools. | :18:42. | :18:49.
What we were told by one of the leaders of the medical command post | :18:49. | :18:53.
was that all of the children were in the Main Hall way, which is where | :18:53. | :18:57.
they were supposed to be during their tornado drills and the roof | :18:57. | :19:05.
collapsed on top of them. -- the main hallway. They suspected | :19:05. | :19:08.
waterlines broke and they drowned. Do you believe that happened to all | :19:08. | :19:17.
24? Yes, because they were all in that main hallway with debris on top | :19:17. | :19:23.
of them. They were still looking for six people. They did not identify if | :19:23. | :19:27.
those were children or adults, or all adults. They stated one child | :19:27. | :19:30.
was still missing and they are looking for that person at this | :19:31. | :19:36.
point. As far as 10.00, I hadn't heard the child had been recovered | :19:36. | :19:46.
:19:46. | :19:47. | ||
at that point. It is very solemn. Everyone is just doing their best to | :19:47. | :19:52.
continue the recovery efforts, you know. A lot of it doesn't sink in | :19:52. | :19:58.
until after the fact, you know, because we are in there trying to | :19:58. | :20:03.
keep your game face on, so to speak. But, you know, once it's said and | :20:03. | :20:08.
done, it hits you like a tonne of bricks! The firefighters were | :20:08. | :20:13.
taking, they were going in in shifts and there was probably 400 | :20:14. | :20:20.
firefighters that were waiting to go in, as others were cutting so they | :20:20. | :20:23.
were taking shifts. As one group is in, they will switch, then another | :20:23. | :20:27.
group would go in. That way, they are not getting exhausted, or | :20:27. | :20:34.
overworked, or hurt because they are being too exhausted with trying to | :20:34. | :20:44.
:20:44. | :20:45. | ||
get the children out. A lot of people are just very sad. I mean, as | :20:45. | :20:49.
you can imagine, having to pull anybody, deceased, whether it be | :20:49. | :20:53.
children or adults is going to be overwhelming for a person. At this | :20:53. | :20:58.
point, when it went from a search and rescue to search and recovery, | :20:58. | :21:08.
:21:08. | :21:11. | ||
the mood over there has changed. Her Majesty the Queen here in London | :21:11. | :21:19.
has sent a message of condolence to President Obama after that tornado. | :21:19. | :21:23.
Her Majesty was sending "our deepest sympathies to all those whose lives | :21:23. | :21:28.
have been affected". It is a sign of how far Burma has come since the | :21:28. | :21:30.
release of opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi after many years of | :21:31. | :21:35.
house arrest. The Burmese President has met President Obama for talks in | :21:35. | :21:40.
the White House and the US President took the significant step of using | :21:40. | :21:45.
the new name for Burma, Myanmar, which was adopted by the country's | :21:45. | :21:50.
military rulers in 1989. The first visit by a Burmese leader | :21:50. | :21:55.
in almost half a century. As President Thein Sein arrived at the | :21:55. | :21:59.
White House, he must have spotted the protesters that lined his route. | :21:59. | :22:04.
Eager to show their distaste and anger at this visit. That | :22:04. | :22:08.
controversy would not have escaped President Obama. But he was keen to | :22:08. | :22:16.
reflect on the positives that could be achieved from this meeting. | :22:16. | :22:18.
indicated to President Sein, countries that are successful are | :22:18. | :22:22.
countries that tap into the talents of all people and respect the rights | :22:22. | :22:32.
:22:32. | :22:33. | ||
of all people. I'm confident that if Myanmar follows that recipe, that it | :22:33. | :22:37.
will be not only a successful democracy, but a thriving economy, | :22:37. | :22:45.
too. President Obama has reason to be cautious. Sectarian violence | :22:45. | :22:49.
against ethnic minorities, like these Muslims, have caused deep | :22:49. | :22:54.
concern. The burning, looting and killing has intensified in the | :22:54. | :23:00.
country. It's prompted some human rights groups to accuse the Burmese | :23:00. | :23:03.
government of "ethnic cleansing". President Thein Sein was keen to | :23:03. | :23:08.
stress his commitment to reform. TRANSLATION: We have a lot of | :23:08. | :23:12.
challenges ahead of us. We have to thank the US government and the | :23:12. | :23:15.
people's support and the understanding we will be able to | :23:15. | :23:18.
encounter these challenges as we undertake the reform process in our | :23:18. | :23:23.
country. And that is the message the Obama administration is hanging on | :23:23. | :23:28.
to. The question is if President Thein Sein can deliver on his | :23:28. | :23:36.
promises. Now, the ultimate executive toy | :23:36. | :23:39.
celebrates its 50th birthday today. We are talking about the Learjet. | :23:39. | :23:44.
The aircraft which started the craze for private jets and remains the | :23:44. | :23:47.
ultimate in luxury travel. But be warned, they cost several million | :23:47. | :23:50.
dollars a piece. Our business presenter has been asking whether | :23:50. | :23:54.
there is still a future for the private jet in an age of economic | :23:54. | :23:59.
austerity. For more than 50 years, the Learjet | :23:59. | :24:03.
has come to symbolise luxury aircraft, synonymous with the rich | :24:03. | :24:08.
and famous, it's been the tool of the wealthy business traveller. From | :24:08. | :24:12.
these early models, to ones that we see today, Learjets and private jets | :24:12. | :24:18.
like these are seen as the ultimate status symbol. In these tough | :24:18. | :24:22.
economic times, is this less than austere mode of transport able to | :24:22. | :24:27.
survive? In many, many cases, a business doesn't need to use a | :24:27. | :24:35.
private jet. A business can use a commercial flight. It's a case of | :24:35. | :24:38.
scheduling and organising the travel in the way that can utilise a | :24:38. | :24:42.
commercial flight. Companies that sell and charter jets just like this | :24:42. | :24:46.
one, they are starting to look well beyond those traditional markets in | :24:46. | :24:54.
the US and Europe. That is because the likes of Asia, the Middle East | :24:54. | :24:58.
and Africa are regions that can't get enough of these type of aircraft | :24:58. | :25:04.
and well, that is exactly where this industry sees its future. Shaking | :25:04. | :25:09.
off the image of the past is not easy. A number of high-profile | :25:09. | :25:17.
crashes sparked a series of questions over safety standards. The | :25:17. | :25:21.
US golfer Payne Stewart died in this accident in 1999. There are concerns | :25:21. | :25:25.
about the environmental impact. Private jets leave a sizeable carbon | :25:25. | :25:30.
footprint. I caught up with the CEO who spoke of the benefits of | :25:30. | :25:37.
business jets. I know people see it as there for the rich and famous. | :25:37. | :25:42.
It's really a lot deeper than that. If it was - if we had to rely on | :25:42. | :25:46.
that work, we wouldn't be in business. But like them or loathe | :25:46. | :25:50.
them, people are still buying these planes. In fact, over the next | :25:50. | :25:55.
decade, 10,000 new jets are expected to enter the market. So it does look | :25:55. | :26:04.
as though the likes of the Learjet are in it for the long-haul. | :26:04. | :26:08.
I want to show you some rare images of one of the world's most | :26:09. | :26:18.
:26:19. | :26:20. | ||
endangered animals. These pictures have been released of Java leopards. | :26:20. | :26:24.
They are classified as critically endangered. Amazingly, these are | :26:24. | :26:30.
living less than 100 kilometres from Jakarta. | :26:30. | :26:35.
The top story: These are some of the images that capture the devastation | :26:35. | :26:39.
after a massive tornado struck the small town of Moore in Oklahoma | :26:39. | :26:43.
killing at least 91 people. Two schools were directly in the storm's | :26:43. | :26:48.
path and 20 children are amongst the dead. Residents were given 16 | :26:48. | :26:51.
minutes warning as the tornado approached. The search for survivors | :26:51. | :26:56. |
