A new theory that the plane may have flown from four hours after its last | :00:25. | :00:31.
known contact. That has been rejected by the authorities. | :00:32. | :00:39.
We have not done anything which could jeopardise the search effort. | :00:40. | :00:47.
The German Chancellor warns of catastrophic consequences if Russia | :00:48. | :00:49.
continues its path on Crimea. And harsh punishments or a health | :00:50. | :00:55.
problem? Nations are divided on how to deal with drugs. | :00:56. | :01:07.
Day six of the search for the missing Malaysia Airlines passenger | :01:08. | :01:16.
jet. Still no reliable clues as to why it disappeared last Saturday en | :01:17. | :01:19.
route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. In the words of the Transportation | :01:20. | :01:25.
Minister, "the plane has vanished". China released these satellite | :01:26. | :01:27.
images from last Sunday which could have been debris. Malaysia now says | :01:28. | :01:35.
they were put out by mistake and are inaccurate. Overnight, the Wall | :01:36. | :01:40.
Street Journal reported that the plane may have flown for four hours | :01:41. | :01:43.
after its last contact at 1.30 last Sunday morning. The airline chief | :01:44. | :01:50.
executive said the usual engine transmissions stopped at 1.07 last | :01:51. | :01:53.
Saturday morning, so they have no engine data on what happened next. | :01:54. | :02:01.
Four hours, that is the length of time that it is believed the engines | :02:02. | :02:06.
could have been functioning for. Look at the time, seven minutes past | :02:07. | :02:10.
one, last Sunday morning. They have no data after that time. Responding | :02:11. | :02:14.
to suggestions that maintenance had not been correctly carried out, | :02:15. | :02:17.
which might have led to a fuselage disintegration, the airline said the | :02:18. | :02:26.
plane had a service on 23 February. That was less than two weeks ago. | :02:27. | :02:30.
The airline also said police have not searched the homes of the crew. | :02:31. | :02:33.
Let's listen to the opening statement from the Transport | :02:34. | :02:39.
Minister. News reports have suggested that the | :02:40. | :02:44.
aircraft may have continued flying for some time after last contact. As | :02:45. | :02:50.
Malaysia Airlines will confirm shortly, those reports are | :02:51. | :02:54.
inaccurate. The last transmission from the aircraft was at seven | :02:55. | :02:57.
minutes past one, which indicated everything was normal. Rolls-Royce | :02:58. | :03:03.
and Boeing teams are here in Kuala Lumpur, and have been working with | :03:04. | :03:07.
the investigations teams since Sunday. These issues have never been | :03:08. | :03:12.
raised. Whenever there are new details, they must be corroborated. | :03:13. | :03:24.
Rolls-Royce and Boeing indicate that those reports are inaccurate. A | :03:25. | :03:35.
Malaysian surveillance plane was dispatched this morning to | :03:36. | :03:38.
investigate potential daybreak shown on Chinese satellite images. We | :03:39. | :03:45.
found nothing. We have contacted the Chinese embassy, who notified us | :03:46. | :03:51.
this afternoon that the images were released by mistake and did not show | :03:52. | :03:58.
any debris from Flight MH370. The third issue I would like to clarify | :03:59. | :04:04.
is that the aircraft had been fully serviced, and was fit to fly, | :04:05. | :04:07.
according to engineering and maintenance records. Yesterday's | :04:08. | :04:10.
news briefing was quite chaotic, heated at times - the BBC's Jennifer | :04:11. | :04:14.
Pak is in Kuala Lumpur. I asked her what it was like today. Certainly, | :04:15. | :04:26.
there was not any new information. He spent most of the time denying | :04:27. | :04:30.
reports that had been surfacing, simply because there is a | :04:31. | :04:32.
frustration building up here that officials are not giving all of the | :04:33. | :04:35.
information they have at hand. You have already mentioned that I have | :04:36. | :04:42.
denied that the jet itself had been flying for hours, going undetected | :04:43. | :04:49.
somehow. But also, more damaging, is that the actual hope of finding | :04:50. | :04:53.
debris today did not turn up anything. Bizarrely, the Chinese | :04:54. | :04:57.
embassy has said that they sent out those images by mistake, of the | :04:58. | :05:02.
three objects which were supposed to be found floating just a day after | :05:03. | :05:05.
the plane disappeared. They now say that the images were sent out by | :05:06. | :05:09.
mistake, and did not give any further explanation. They did say | :05:10. | :05:14.
however that it was not connected to Flight 370. So at this point in | :05:15. | :05:18.
time, we are still no closer to finding any answer as to what | :05:19. | :05:24.
happened to the flight and to the 239 people on board. At this moment | :05:25. | :05:27.
it seems the authorities have no idea which part of the sea they | :05:28. | :05:32.
should be looking at. It is very clear from what the transportation | :05:33. | :05:36.
minister said, he said, the plane has vanished. And then he said | :05:37. | :05:41.
several times, trust me. In other words, trying to say, we do not have | :05:42. | :05:45.
any other information which we are not sharing with you? Yes. They have | :05:46. | :05:53.
been under a lot of criticism for holding back information, and part | :05:54. | :05:58.
of it may be a translation issue, part of it may be that there are | :05:59. | :06:01.
some conflicting and confusing statements coming from different | :06:02. | :06:05.
officials. For example, for a while, they were searching in the | :06:06. | :06:08.
stretch of sea between Malaysia and Vietnam, in the South China Sea. | :06:09. | :06:13.
Then they said military records indicated the plane may have tried | :06:14. | :06:17.
to turn back. They have reaffirmed that this is still the case. But | :06:18. | :06:21.
reports had suggested that perhaps it had gone so far West that it had | :06:22. | :06:25.
gone into the Straits of Malacca, which is why the search was | :06:26. | :06:29.
expanded. They say they have not tracked the plane out there yet. | :06:30. | :06:32.
However, the air force chief has said they do have an idea of the | :06:33. | :06:37.
flight path, they are just not quite willing to reveal that publicly just | :06:38. | :06:41.
yet until they can confirm it, which seems to indicate that they do have | :06:42. | :06:45.
a lot more information which they are not sharing yet. In normal | :06:46. | :06:48.
circumstances in Malaysia, that would be the end of the story, | :06:49. | :06:52.
because the government here is used to controlling the message. | :06:53. | :06:56.
Traditional media is linked direct leak or indirectly to the governing | :06:57. | :07:00.
coalition, and that would be the end of that. But in this case you have | :07:01. | :07:03.
the international media, and passengers from 14 different | :07:04. | :07:08.
nations, families of those people, pressing for information. And so, | :07:09. | :07:16.
officials have been under fire, during this period which must be | :07:17. | :07:17.
heart-wrenching for the families. Germany's Chancellor, Angela Merkel, | :07:18. | :07:22.
has warned of catastrophic consequences unless Russia changes | :07:23. | :07:25.
course over Crimea. Addressing the German Parliament, Mrs Merkel said | :07:26. | :07:28.
that if Russia refused to change course, EU leaders were ready to | :07:29. | :07:31.
take measures with, in her words, serious economic impact. | :07:32. | :07:41.
TRANSLATION: If Russia continues on the course it has pursued over the | :07:42. | :07:49.
past weeks, then it would not just be a catastrophe for Ukraine, and as | :07:50. | :07:54.
neighbours of Russia, we would also see it as a threat. This would not | :07:55. | :07:59.
just change the entire relationship between the European Union and | :08:00. | :08:02.
Russia, but I am convinced this will harm Russia massively, economically | :08:03. | :08:09.
as well as politically. So that was the language, | :08:10. | :08:12.
catastrophic consequences and threats... The BBC's Steve Evans is | :08:13. | :08:17.
in Berlin. I put it to him that it's particularly tough language coming | :08:18. | :08:23.
from Mrs Merkel. The first thing she said was, there will be no military | :08:24. | :08:28.
action. We should say that. She implied that there will be gradual, | :08:29. | :08:33.
step-by-step, increases in the pressure on Russia. The first step | :08:34. | :08:37.
will be to hold negotiations on trade and the movement of people | :08:38. | :08:41.
between the EU and Russia. And then she said there would be measures, | :08:42. | :08:44.
which would be economically very painful for Russia, if the course | :08:45. | :08:51.
which President Putin is set upon is not reversed. But she did not use | :08:52. | :08:55.
the word sanctions, and she did not specify what those measures might | :08:56. | :09:00.
be. So, it is tough language. She is basically saying, you can't have | :09:01. | :09:05.
business as normal if you go on in this way. She said that he is living | :09:06. | :09:10.
in the world of the Cold War, and times have moved on. It is not the | :09:11. | :09:16.
way we do things now. As she put it, you can't turn the clock back. So, | :09:17. | :09:20.
tough talk, but no specific measures, and also ruling out | :09:21. | :09:22.
military action. Is it time to declare an end to the | :09:23. | :09:29.
so-called war on drugs? Ministers gathering in Vienna today hope to | :09:30. | :09:32.
come up with a co-ordinated response to the world's narcotics problem. | :09:33. | :09:35.
But there's a growing split between nations which regard drugs primarily | :09:36. | :09:38.
as a health issue, and those which enforce very strict penalties for | :09:39. | :09:41.
users, dealers and suppliers. The BBC's Bethany Bell is in Vienna for | :09:42. | :09:43.
us now. Is there any clarity as to which way | :09:44. | :09:56.
this consensus is likely to develop in the coming hours, on criminality, | :09:57. | :10:00.
or whether this is just a health issue? Well, they say there will be | :10:01. | :10:07.
a statement that all of the countries will sign up to, which | :10:08. | :10:13.
campaigners for reform say means that the statement will be quite | :10:14. | :10:18.
weak, in terms of their demands for more of a move away from the | :10:19. | :10:23.
approach of a war against drugs. We have heard from the conference | :10:24. | :10:27.
today, from the head of the UN's office on drugs and crime, saying, | :10:28. | :10:30.
what is needed is a balanced approach. Trying to balance the | :10:31. | :10:38.
needs of health care against the questions of criminal justice. But | :10:39. | :10:43.
as you say, there are increasing divisions between countries as to | :10:44. | :10:48.
the best way to do this. Countries where the death penalty is still in | :10:49. | :10:52.
place for drug traffickers, and countries like Uruguay on the other | :10:53. | :10:56.
extreme which has voted to legalise cannabis. So, quite big divergences. | :10:57. | :11:04.
Is there a clear recommendation from the medics, and also from the | :11:05. | :11:11.
anti-crime organisations around the world, is there a consensus on that | :11:12. | :11:21.
side as well? Consensus is something I think which is increasingly | :11:22. | :11:25.
difficult for people to find. Some doctors will say, what we need is | :11:26. | :11:28.
more harm reduction, when it comes to drug problems. Other doctors will | :11:29. | :11:33.
say, the reason we do not see so many drug tests as we do from | :11:34. | :11:40.
alcohol and tobacco is that the drug conventions have worked, that these | :11:41. | :11:44.
extremely dangerous substances have been more or less successfully | :11:45. | :11:49.
controlled. So, there are very, very big differences here. This is a | :11:50. | :11:54.
debate which will not end here in Vienna, it will continue. | :11:55. | :11:57.
In other news... The Delhi High Court has confirmed the death | :11:58. | :12:02.
sentence for four men convicted of the fatal gang-rape of a 23-year-old | :12:03. | :12:06.
student in December 2012. The court said that the crime falls into a | :12:07. | :12:09.
rare category that allows capital punishment. One other accused in the | :12:10. | :12:15.
case committed suicide in jail and the sixth one was tried under | :12:16. | :12:17.
juvenile laws. Six people are now known to have | :12:18. | :12:24.
died in a huge gas explosion which demolished two apartment blocks in | :12:25. | :12:27.
New York. At least eight people are still unaccounted for, following the | :12:28. | :12:30.
blast in the East Harlem district of Manhattan. | :12:31. | :12:32.
Police in Hong Kong have arrested two more suspects, including a | :12:33. | :12:36.
37-year-old woman, in connection to a knife attack on a journalist. | :12:37. | :12:40.
Kevin Lau was stabbed several times on 26 February. Police say the | :12:41. | :12:45.
attack had nothing to do with his journalistic work, but Mr Lau, who | :12:46. | :12:47.
is recovering in hospital, disagrees. | :12:48. | :12:51.
Israeli military planes have bombarded the Gaza Strip after | :12:52. | :12:55.
Palestinian militants fired dozens of rockets into southern Israel. An | :12:56. | :12:59.
Israeli spokesman said 29 sites in Gaza were targeted. One strike | :13:00. | :13:05.
caused power cuts across Gaza City. There's no word on any casualties. | :13:06. | :13:09.
Hours earlier, the militant group Islamic Jihad carried out the | :13:10. | :13:11.
heaviest barrage of southern Israel for more than a year. The | :13:12. | :13:16.
Palestinian president, Mahmud Abbas, has called on Israel to end what he | :13:17. | :13:19.
described as its military escalation. With me now is Mohamed | :13:20. | :13:30.
Yehia from the BBC Arabic TV. What has provoked or encouraged, as to | :13:31. | :13:35.
fire those rockets into Israel? These rockets were fired by the | :13:36. | :13:42.
Islamic Jihad group, which is not how mass, but is thought to be | :13:43. | :13:47.
controlled by it. There are two things to consider. Firstly, last | :13:48. | :13:54.
week, the Israeli navy intercepted a ship carrying rockets, which the | :13:55. | :13:57.
Israelis say were destined for Islamic Jihad. It was alleged that | :13:58. | :14:05.
they were from Iran, which Iran denies. The other thing is that | :14:06. | :14:09.
since the military takeover in Egypt, Egypt has put Hamas under | :14:10. | :14:16.
great pressure, demolishing 1300 tunnels which were used to smuggle | :14:17. | :14:22.
goods between Egypt and Gaza, and declaring Hamas as a terrorist | :14:23. | :14:26.
organisation. So it could be that this could relieve the pressure, | :14:27. | :14:32.
from Hamas's point of view. So the rockets were being fired for | :14:33. | :14:35.
political reasons, not necessarily directly to do with Israel, on this | :14:36. | :14:42.
occasion? Well, the sequence is a tit for tat, as usual. But this is | :14:43. | :14:46.
the background, the tensions with Egypt, and even Syria could be a | :14:47. | :14:51.
factor in this. So, is Hamas and Islamic Jihad, are they trying to | :14:52. | :14:56.
make a point about their power not having been eroded? Well, they are | :14:57. | :15:03.
thought to have longer range missiles, which they have not used | :15:04. | :15:06.
in the attacks yesterday. Stay with us on BBC World News - | :15:07. | :15:15.
still to come... We'll take a look at the winners and losers at the | :15:16. | :15:18.
Oscars equivalent for the video game industry. | :15:19. | :15:25.
Three more people have died in new anti-government protests in | :15:26. | :15:28.
Venezuela. A policeman and two opposition | :15:29. | :15:31.
activists were shot dead in separate incidents in the city of Valencia. | :15:32. | :15:36.
So far, at least 25 people have been killed in a month long wave of | :15:37. | :15:39.
protests against the government of President Nicholas Maduro. He has | :15:40. | :15:43.
accused opposition leaders of attempting to mount a coup against | :15:44. | :15:57.
him. Another day of rival marches in | :15:58. | :16:02.
Caracas. The city was split into macro. On the one side the students | :16:03. | :16:06.
are in favour of the government. On the other side, those who oppose it. | :16:07. | :16:12.
They blame the President for high insurance rates -- interest rates. | :16:13. | :16:22.
The government has been clamping down on protesters. TRANSLATION: I | :16:23. | :16:28.
am obligated by my constitutional responsibility to take special | :16:29. | :16:31.
measures. I will take this to get a centre of the attack by fascists. | :16:32. | :16:41.
Nobody will bully me. Wednesday's anti-government march ended with | :16:42. | :16:43.
clashes between protesters and authorities. But in Valencia, | :16:44. | :16:48.
Venezuela's third-largest city, things were worse. Three more people | :16:49. | :16:55.
died in new clashes. A university student, and National Guard captain | :16:56. | :16:59.
and a third man were reportedly shot dead in separate incidents. Several | :17:00. | :17:05.
more were wounded. The opposition blames the government for backing | :17:06. | :17:08.
armed civilians who attacked protesters. But the government | :17:09. | :17:12.
accuses the opposition of the unrest. Wednesday's death toll is | :17:13. | :17:19.
the highest in a single day since protests started in Caracas on the | :17:20. | :17:24.
12th of February. At least 25 people have died so far. | :17:25. | :17:36.
You are with BBC World News. These are the latest headlines for you: | :17:37. | :17:39.
Chinese satellite images that show possible wreckage from the missing | :17:40. | :17:42.
airliner have been dismissed by Malaysia as inaccurate and | :17:43. | :17:50.
mistakenly released. The German Chancellor Angela Merkel | :17:51. | :17:52.
has warned of catastrophic consequences if Russia continues its | :17:53. | :17:58.
path on Crimea. It is the ninth day of the trial of | :17:59. | :18:02.
Oscar Pistorius for the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. | :18:03. | :18:06.
Forensic scientist Colonel Johannes Vermeulen is back on the witness | :18:07. | :18:14.
stand. He yesterday disputed the athlete's evidence that he had been | :18:15. | :18:17.
on his prosthetic legs when he broke down a locked toilet door to reach | :18:18. | :18:21.
dying Reeva. Pistorius, seen here arriving at the court, denies | :18:22. | :18:23.
intentionally killing his girlfriend. Earlier I spoke to our | :18:24. | :18:28.
correspondent Milton Nkosi who is outside the court house. I began by | :18:29. | :18:33.
asking him about the defence lawyer's line of questioning of | :18:34. | :18:43.
forensic evidence. What Johannes Vermeulen has been at pains to | :18:44. | :18:49.
explain to Oscar Pistorius' senior counsel, as far as he was | :18:50. | :18:54.
concerned, Oscar Pistorius was not wearing his prosthetic legs at the | :18:55. | :18:58.
time he was wielding the act and hitting the bathroom door. Mr | :18:59. | :19:04.
Pistorius' version was he was already wearing those. Throughout | :19:05. | :19:09.
the morning we have been listening to Barry Roux trying to show some | :19:10. | :19:14.
marks on the door, alongside the bullet holes that we saw in the | :19:15. | :19:17.
pictures, that some of those marks were caused by Mr Pistorius' | :19:18. | :19:25.
proceeds is. But Johannes Vermeulen disputes that. He says Barry Roux | :19:26. | :19:35.
has punched holes in the processes how police collect their evidence. | :19:36. | :19:38.
There is an adjournment now and we will update you later. Both | :19:39. | :19:43.
yesterday and today, it is the issue once again of the credibility of | :19:44. | :19:49.
South African police processes? Very much so. There are many other issues | :19:50. | :19:54.
at play. It brings to the fore the issue of gender violence in South | :19:55. | :19:59.
Africa and as you say, the South African police processes. Also, the | :20:00. | :20:06.
legal system in South Africa is also under scrutiny through this trial. | :20:07. | :20:20.
Will Mali become a forgotten crisis? That's the fear of some of the | :20:21. | :20:23.
organisations supporting Malian refugees. In February, aid agencies | :20:24. | :20:27.
warned they needed additional funds to cover the needs of the Malian | :20:28. | :20:30.
refugees still spread across Mauritania, Niger and Burkina Faso. | :20:31. | :20:36.
In Burkina Faso alone, there are over 30,000 according to the UNHCR. | :20:37. | :20:39.
Almost two 000 live in the outskirts of Ouagadougou. Our correspondent | :20:40. | :20:42.
Laeila Adjovi went to there to meet with the refugees and sent this | :20:43. | :20:46.
report. It is a refugee camp 25 kilometres | :20:47. | :20:54.
outside the kina face so's capital. The UNHCR and its partners provide | :20:55. | :21:00.
them with health care, are food, shelter and education but the | :21:01. | :21:06.
refugees find it is not enough. TRANSLATION: We lack food because | :21:07. | :21:11.
what is distributed by the body weight show does not cover all our | :21:12. | :21:22.
needs. -- BWF O. Luckily, due to the camp's proximity to the city, many | :21:23. | :21:27.
Artisan is make ends meet and they go into town to sell their crafts. | :21:28. | :21:34.
This refugee camp is closest to the capital so that means more work | :21:35. | :21:38.
opportunities for the refugees. Most of these people come from the north | :21:39. | :21:43.
of Mali. Although the crisis has abated they feel they cannot go back | :21:44. | :21:47.
yet. Some of these refugees fled home because of the Islamist | :21:48. | :21:52.
militants while others left because of the angry mobs which put the | :21:53. | :21:56.
blame for the crisis on all the Tuaregs. Today, with no | :21:57. | :22:02.
reconciliation process, the refugees do not believe northern Mali has | :22:03. | :22:08.
achieved to peak -- true peace. There are still armed men so what | :22:09. | :22:12.
kind of peace we are talking about? Where is this piece? We need an | :22:13. | :22:17.
agreement to allow people from the north to really feel Mali on. If I | :22:18. | :22:23.
am Mali and, why is it each time a Tuareg takes up arms to rebel, I am | :22:24. | :22:27.
the one who was expelled from a country? What has it got to do with | :22:28. | :22:40.
me? UNHCR started discussing the repatriations of refugees with the | :22:41. | :22:43.
government. There are still a lot of need to attend to. TRANSLATION: | :22:44. | :22:52.
Unfortunately, because of the numerous conflicts in the world, | :22:53. | :22:57.
nowadays Mali and refugees tend to be forgotten. But those people are | :22:58. | :23:01.
still not back home and need the support of the international | :23:02. | :23:11.
community. The refugees also plead for more infrastructure is and basic | :23:12. | :23:17.
services in the North to allow their full integration into society. It is | :23:18. | :23:21.
also one of the key elements to finally reach peace and make it | :23:22. | :23:22.
last. The movie awards season is over for | :23:23. | :23:37.
another year, but here in London the dinner jackets and bow ties were out | :23:38. | :23:41.
again for the British Academy Games Awards. The zombie adventure The | :23:42. | :23:45.
Last Of Us scooped five prizes. Our technology reporter, Daniel Emery | :23:46. | :23:54.
was there. Welcome to central London for the | :23:55. | :23:59.
video game BAFTA awards. There are some big winners tonight including a | :24:00. | :24:04.
company called Naughty Dog. They have scooped five awards for their | :24:05. | :24:10.
game The Last Of Us. I caught up with them earlier. | :24:11. | :24:18.
You try not to think about how much money is on the line and all of | :24:19. | :24:23.
that. You cannot help but think about it sometimes. We get stressed | :24:24. | :24:28.
with previous success but all we can do is use our gut and make a game we | :24:29. | :24:34.
would want to play. We feel if we do that then other gamers will connect | :24:35. | :24:40.
with that. But the talk here tonight is not just about the games, it is | :24:41. | :24:45.
about the business. The hot subject is how to attract and retain | :24:46. | :24:49.
talent, not just within a company but within the country. I caught up | :24:50. | :24:55.
with Ian Livingstone who said tax breaks are a key element of this. We | :24:56. | :25:00.
have to have high skills and access to finance. We have managed to sort | :25:01. | :25:05.
out the skills and we have convinced Michael Gove to have competing on | :25:06. | :25:09.
the national curriculum. That is one click. The second it is we have a | :25:10. | :25:13.
level playing field with regard to investment. As well as getting | :25:14. | :25:18.
finance in from the traditional sources, we have applied to have | :25:19. | :25:21.
some credit which is going through the EU at the moment. If that comes | :25:22. | :25:26.
in, I think there will be no reason for anyone to go anywhere except the | :25:27. | :25:27.
UK. For the winners, BAFTA means | :25:28. | :25:40.
recognition into the hard work and effort that went into making their | :25:41. | :25:45.
product. Tomorrow is business as usual. While the industry has mostly | :25:46. | :25:49.
survived the financial storm, it still faces many challenges. | :25:50. | :26:01.
Now, watch this video. There was a dramatic car chase in Colorado. You | :26:02. | :26:06.
can see Ryan Stone taking over another car and pushing that woman | :26:07. | :26:10.
out. He threw her on the ground before driving off. He was forced to | :26:11. | :26:15.
abandon that vehicle after causing a multicar pile-up at an intersection. | :26:16. | :26:19.
He made a run for it and eventually gave himself up to police. A | :26:20. | :26:30.
four-year-old boy was unharmed. The main story this hour, the | :26:31. | :26:37.
mystery of what has happened to plain MH370. Apparently, satellite | :26:38. | :26:44.
images appearing to show debris did not show debris and they were | :26:45. | :26:50.
mistakenly released by China. Reports were dismissed that the | :26:51. | :26:54.
plane carried off-line after four hours. That is it from me. Thank you | :26:55. | :26:57.
for joining me. | :26:58. | :27:01. |
