A powerful typhoon hits Japan's southern islands - more than half

:00:19.:00:21.

a million people are urged to leave their homes for safety.

:00:22.:00:23.

A report into the South Korean ferry sinking blames official

:00:24.:00:26.

corruption and negligence - almost 300 people died in the disaster.

:00:27.:00:28.

Hamas says Israel should shoulder its responsibility for the

:00:29.:00:31.

escalating violence in Gaza after a major military operation there.

:00:32.:00:41.

and we meet the young woman who defied her disability to add to the

:00:42.:00:47.

titles she won in Australia and France.

:00:48.:01:04.

Hello and welcome. It is one of the strongest storms to sweep the

:01:05.:01:06.

Pacific in decades. These are the latest pictures of

:01:07.:01:12.

Japan's southern island of Okinawa where people are beginning to feel

:01:13.:01:14.

the brunt of Typhoon Neoguri. More than half

:01:15.:01:17.

a million people are leaving Flights

:01:18.:01:19.

in the area have been cancelled, sea lanes closed and around 70,000

:01:20.:01:22.

homes are without power. The storm will be at its most

:01:23.:01:24.

powerful as it passes Okinawa. Officials warn it could bring waves

:01:25.:01:27.

up to 14 metres high and wind gusts This gives you an idea

:01:28.:01:30.

of just how big this typhoon is this is a view from

:01:31.:01:42.

the international space station. Typhoon Neoguri stretches

:01:43.:01:45.

from Southern Japan to Taiwan. The typhoon is expected to gradually

:01:46.:01:50.

weaken gradually over the next 24 to 48 hours but they are

:01:51.:01:52.

still expecting a lot of rain. The islands south of Japan

:01:53.:01:57.

and southern Japan itself could see That could cause flash floods

:01:58.:02:01.

and landslides. Neoguri is expected to track north

:02:02.:02:06.

then east, Then it should make its way up

:02:07.:02:09.

the main island of Honshu Our correspondent in Tokyo says the

:02:10.:02:35.

storm remains a big concern. It was a super typhoon. It is now weakening

:02:36.:02:39.

but it is still a really huge weather system. It is carrying a lot

:02:40.:02:44.

of wind and a huge amount of moisture. The latest reports I have

:02:45.:02:51.

seen on the television I have seen from Okinawa show a lot of

:02:52.:02:57.

structural damage. All the traffic lights are out. There are widespread

:02:58.:03:02.

power cuts. All the things you would expect to see in a storm of this

:03:03.:03:08.

scale. The good news is there are no reports of fatalities so far. It

:03:09.:03:11.

looks like people in Okinawa are riding out the storm so far quite

:03:12.:03:17.

successfully. Japan is a wealthy country with well built strong

:03:18.:03:21.

buildings. People are staying inside and it looks like by and large they

:03:22.:03:29.

are staying safe. Japan does prepare for typhoons well because they

:03:30.:03:34.

experience them a lot, doesn't it? Japan is a country which prepares

:03:35.:03:39.

for all sorts of disasters. It sits in the typhoon region of the western

:03:40.:03:43.

Pacific. It is also right on the Pacific Ring of Fire so it is used

:03:44.:03:49.

to earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanoes. It is a country which

:03:50.:04:00.

thinks very well and builds buildings to withstand these kind of

:04:01.:04:09.

disasters. It is very different from what we saw in the Philippines when

:04:10.:04:12.

the typhoon struck last year. Here, the instructor is much better and

:04:13.:04:16.

can with and the storm is much better.

:04:17.:04:22.

We will be keeping across that storm to find out what damage it causes.

:04:23.:04:31.

Let's stay in the region. A South Korean government report into the

:04:32.:04:35.

ferry thinking which killed almost 300 people back in April, has

:04:36.:04:41.

pointed to official corruption and negligence -- the ferry sinking. The

:04:42.:04:49.

release comes as the trial of the captain and some of the crewmembers

:04:50.:04:53.

resumes. Video footage will be presented in court from the day the

:04:54.:05:01.

sinking. The BBC's Lucy Williams is outside the court and she says there

:05:02.:05:05.

have been some distressing scenes. Inside the court there has been a

:05:06.:05:12.

lot of footage of the captain and crew and also footage from inside

:05:13.:05:16.

the ship, shot by one of the schoolchildren who died in this

:05:17.:05:21.

disaster. That footage shows him and his classmates gathered in the

:05:22.:05:25.

corridors of the ship, wearing their life jackets, laughing and joking,

:05:26.:05:29.

not understanding the gravity of the situation. The prosecution was

:05:30.:05:35.

insistent that this was important footage to show because it indicated

:05:36.:05:38.

how close the exit doors were for many of the children on board. They

:05:39.:05:43.

are making the case that none of these deaths needed to happen if the

:05:44.:05:47.

captain and crew had acted differently. The judge said he

:05:48.:05:50.

understood this would be very distressing footage, particularly

:05:51.:05:54.

for the families of many of these young victims, who come here every

:05:55.:05:58.

week to watch the proceedings. Indeed, there were many tears in the

:05:59.:06:01.

courtroom as the footage was displayed. One woman was seen

:06:02.:06:08.

outside the courtroom breaking down in tears, screaming again and again,

:06:09.:06:12.

give me back my children. All this comes on the same day that an

:06:13.:06:17.

interim government report spread the blame for this disaster much more

:06:18.:06:21.

widely, calling into question the actions of the Coast Guard,

:06:22.:06:28.

regulators, inspectors. 11 officials have already faced corruption

:06:29.:06:32.

charges and the South Korean president all this time is vowing to

:06:33.:06:36.

clean up these lax regulations and inspections and make South Korea

:06:37.:06:41.

safe for its citizens. Lucy Williamson there.

:06:42.:06:48.

Let's bring you the latest on the Middle East. Israel is taking other

:06:49.:06:53.

measures in case it decides to send ground troops into the Gaza Strip.

:06:54.:06:57.

The situation on the ground has becoming creasing utensil.

:06:58.:07:01.

Overnight, Israel carried out air strikes towards 50 targets in Gaza.

:07:02.:07:06.

Doctors say women and children were injured. Israel says the action is

:07:07.:07:13.

aimed at stopping the barrage of rockets being fired by Hamas.

:07:14.:07:19.

Earlier I spoke to Sir Peter Lerner. He said they had not ruled out

:07:20.:07:22.

sending in ground troops and He said they had not ruled out

:07:23.:07:25.

sending in ground troops they are targeting Hamas strongholds. The

:07:26.:07:33.

situation where Hamas chooses to infiltrate the structure is a huge

:07:34.:07:39.

challenge for us. We have intelligence and we are striking the

:07:40.:07:44.

heart of that organisation, its operatives, its infrastructure, the

:07:45.:07:50.

rockets which are being poised and prepared to be launched at our

:07:51.:07:57.

towns. Will you use ground troops? I say that we hope not. We have to be

:07:58.:08:03.

prepared for that escalation. Indeed, we are preparing, we have

:08:04.:08:09.

called up some reservists and we are taking the necessary steps around

:08:10.:08:14.

the Gaza Strip to be prepared for that option. That is not a DS

:08:15.:08:20.

collation, is it? No, that is what we call for last week. They have

:08:21.:08:28.

escalated the situation and forced us to a situation where we have no

:08:29.:08:34.

choice, we have to respond. That was Sir Peter Lerner from the Israeli

:08:35.:08:38.

defence Force speaking to me early on.

:08:39.:08:47.

The Australian government have refused... A legal challenges the

:08:48.:08:54.

latest development in a growing controversy when Australia confirmed

:08:55.:08:58.

that a boat with more than 40 other Sri Lankan asylum seekers was

:08:59.:09:02.

intercepted at sea and turned around on Sunday. Phil Mercer is in Sydney

:09:03.:09:07.

and he has been following the latest developments. The High Court here in

:09:08.:09:13.

Australia issued an interim injunction against the transfer of

:09:14.:09:17.

asylum seekers from this second vessel, apparently intercepted by

:09:18.:09:22.

Australian authorities near Christmas Island in the Indian

:09:23.:09:26.

Ocean. The full hearing resumes in the southern city of Melbourne

:09:27.:09:32.

today. At issue, exactly where this asylum boat was stopped by the

:09:33.:09:36.

Australians. The government insists it was picked up outside of

:09:37.:09:40.

Australia's territorial waters, therefore the passengers on board

:09:41.:09:45.

are not able to claim asylum in Australia. Refugee lawyers have a

:09:46.:09:49.

very different view, they believe the boat was intercepted in

:09:50.:09:54.

Australian waters, therefore those on board can seek asylum here. It is

:09:55.:09:59.

a very conjugated Kay said it has been adjourned for about three weeks

:10:00.:10:05.

but that raises big questions. What happens to these asylum seekers in

:10:06.:10:09.

the care of the authorities for the next 21 days, while they are still

:10:10.:10:15.

being kept on the high seas. The issue of asylum seekers and

:10:16.:10:18.

immigration is very big in Australia. This episode plays into a

:10:19.:10:23.

wider context of tough measures taken by the government. The

:10:24.:10:28.

Conservative Prime Minister was elected in Australia in September of

:10:29.:10:33.

last year, and part of his election campaign was promising to stop the

:10:34.:10:38.

boats. That was Mr Abbott's mantra, the boats being vessels carrying

:10:39.:10:43.

unauthorised maritime arrivals into Australia's northern waters. In

:10:44.:10:48.

recent years we have seen a steady flow of those boats. Mr Abbott

:10:49.:10:53.

brought in the military to try and fortify Australia's northern

:10:54.:10:58.

maritime borders. Offshore detention camps were opened as a deterrent for

:10:59.:11:04.

asylum seekers. Some very hard-line measures pursued by the Australian

:11:05.:11:11.

government. Many voters agreed with Mr Abbott but there is a part of

:11:12.:11:13.

Australia that believes that Mr Abbott is behaving unfairly harshly.

:11:14.:11:19.

Till Mercer in Sydney now. The defence team of Oscar Pistorius

:11:20.:11:24.

has ended its case. The prosecution finished cross-examining the final

:11:25.:11:28.

defence witness yesterday. Mr Pistorius denies murder. He claims

:11:29.:11:32.

he shot his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp when he shot her stake for

:11:33.:11:45.

an intruder. Milton Nkosi reports. As you can see, the packing up as

:11:46.:12:09.

begun. The judge said they would reconvene here on the 7th of

:12:10.:12:09.

August. We do not know when... expected to ask for money so that

:12:10.:13:10.

detention centres can be built for the children and officials hired to

:13:11.:13:18.

look after them. It is all about the children.

:13:19.:13:24.

Outside the White House, opponents of plans to deport unaccompanied

:13:25.:13:28.

child migrants raised their voices. For them, this is a simple

:13:29.:13:34.

humanitarian issue. Some of them do not know what is happening. They

:13:35.:13:48.

said, you go with these people. On the other side of the argument,

:13:49.:13:54.

passions are just as strong. These are anti-immigration protesters in

:13:55.:13:59.

California last week, angry at the number of immigrants entering the US

:14:00.:14:06.

illegally. Since October, 52,000 unaccompanied children from

:14:07.:14:08.

Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras have been caught entering the United

:14:09.:14:14.

States. That is double the figure from the year before. According to

:14:15.:14:22.

the White House, those who can prove they are suffering at home can stay.

:14:23.:25:48.

the president. Bill Clinton 's runs throughout Washington DC during the

:25:49.:25:52.

morning rush hour probably presented the Secret Service with its greatest

:25:53.:26:06.

challenge during my protective career. We went out the same gate

:26:07.:26:15.

and ran the same routes. When you become predictable that's when the

:26:16.:26:17.

real danger comes in. become predictable that's when the

:26:33.:26:36.

going to get a lot of thanks, you are not going to get any

recognition, but what you do get is a feeling of accomplishment, of a
