Hello and welcome to BBC World News. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:51
In Rome, Pope Francis has called
for an end to the suffering | 0:00:51 | 0:00:54
of children and for peace
in the Middle East. | 0:00:54 | 0:00:57
Christmas celebrations in Bethlehem
have been quieter than usual, | 0:00:57 | 0:00:59
after the violent unrest sparked
by President Trump's decision | 0:00:59 | 0:01:02
to recognise Jerusalem
as Israel's capital. | 0:01:02 | 0:01:03
Here in Britain, the Archbishop
of Canterbury reflected | 0:01:03 | 0:01:06
in his Christmas Day sermon
on what he described as "tyrannical | 0:01:06 | 0:01:09
leaders around the world"
and "populist leaders who deceive". | 0:01:09 | 0:01:12
This from our Religion
Editor Martin Bashir. | 0:01:12 | 0:01:18
Bright sunshine lit up the Basilica
in St Peter's Square. | 0:01:19 | 0:01:23
But Pope Francis chose
to focus his Christmas Day message | 0:01:23 | 0:01:27
on how conflict and oppression
are casting a dark | 0:01:28 | 0:01:30
shadow over the world. | 0:01:30 | 0:01:35
He said that Christmas makes us
focus on the Christ child, | 0:01:35 | 0:01:38
and thereby pay attention
to the sufferings of children, | 0:01:38 | 0:01:40
particularly in the Holy Land. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:50
"We see Jesus in the children
of the Middle East," he said, | 0:01:50 | 0:01:53
"who continue to suffer
because of growing tensions | 0:01:53 | 0:01:55
between Israelis and Palestinians." | 0:01:55 | 0:01:56
"On this festive day, let us ask
the Lord for peace for Jerusalem." | 0:01:56 | 0:02:06
The Anglican archbishop
in Jerusalem, the Most | 0:02:06 | 0:02:08
Reverend Suheil Dawani,
said that Christ himself wept over | 0:02:08 | 0:02:12
the city 2,000 years ago,
and with Donald Trump's decision | 0:02:12 | 0:02:15
to officially recognise Jerusalem
as the capital of Israel, | 0:02:15 | 0:02:18
that grief continues. | 0:02:18 | 0:02:23
When he wept at that time,
he wept for the absence of peace | 0:02:24 | 0:02:27
and love in the life
of people who live here. | 0:02:27 | 0:02:30
I'm afraid that our Lord Jesus
is really still weeping | 0:02:30 | 0:02:32
for this city. | 0:02:32 | 0:02:46
Happy Christmas! | 0:02:46 | 0:02:46
At Canterbury Cathedral,
Archbishop Justin Welby said | 0:02:46 | 0:02:48
that though Christ
was born without any | 0:02:48 | 0:02:50
political leverage,
he provides more freedom | 0:02:50 | 0:02:52
to individuals than the world's
most powerful leaders. | 0:02:52 | 0:02:54
But midway through preaching,
his own powers of speech | 0:02:54 | 0:02:56
began to fail... | 0:02:56 | 0:02:57
Unlike the budget, it's not gin. | 0:02:57 | 0:02:59
LAUGHTER. | 0:02:59 | 0:03:02
In Rome, Canterbury
and here in Jerusalem, | 0:03:02 | 0:03:06
Christian leaders have taken
the opportunity of this day | 0:03:06 | 0:03:08
to challenge the wisdom
of the world that they say puts | 0:03:08 | 0:03:11
power before people and has
failed to protect the most | 0:03:11 | 0:03:14
vulnerable members of
society, our children. | 0:03:14 | 0:03:16

Investigators in Moscow
are examining what caused a bus | 0:03:34 | 0:03:37
to career into a pedestrian
subway in Moscow, killing | 0:03:37 | 0:03:39
at least four people. | 0:03:39 | 0:03:40
Victims include a woman
in her thirties and a teenager. | 0:03:40 | 0:03:43
The driver told officials he'd been
trying to apply the brakes, | 0:03:43 | 0:03:46

These emergency workers are picking
up the pieces after a bus crashed | 0:03:51 | 0:03:54
into an underpass. | 0:03:54 | 0:03:55
It killed several people
and was only stopped by the roof | 0:03:55 | 0:03:58
of the tunnel. | 0:03:58 | 0:03:59
This was the terrifying
moment the vehicle | 0:03:59 | 0:04:01
barrelled down the steps,
hitting pedestrians. | 0:04:01 | 0:04:03
Officials say they are working
to try to establish | 0:04:03 | 0:04:05
what caused the crash. | 0:04:05 | 0:04:08
TRANSLATION: The bus was driving
away from the square | 0:04:08 | 0:04:10

An investigation is under way. | 0:04:13 | 0:04:14
Four people died and nine
were hospitalised, two people refuse | 0:04:14 | 0:04:17

The driver is in shock
and investigators are working | 0:04:18 | 0:04:21
with him to try to figure
out what happened. | 0:04:21 | 0:04:33
The driver has been detained
by police but there is no | 0:04:33 | 0:04:36
suggestion this was terrorism. | 0:04:36 | 0:04:37
An inspection of
the entire Moscow bus | 0:04:37 | 0:04:39
fleet has now been ordered. | 0:04:39 | 0:04:41
However it happened,
it is a tragedy that | 0:04:41 | 0:04:43
will leave a scar on the city
into the year to come. | 0:04:43 | 0:04:51
The leading Russian opposition
politician Alexei Navalny has called | 0:04:51 | 0:04:53
for a boycott of next year's
election, in protest at the election | 0:04:53 | 0:04:56
commission's decision
that he cannot take part. | 0:04:56 | 0:05:00
He has a conviction for embezzlement | 0:05:00 | 0:05:02
which he says is
politically-motivated | 0:05:02 | 0:05:03
but officials have ruled it
bars him from standing. | 0:05:03 | 0:05:06
Olga Ivshina from the BBC
Russian Service told us more. | 0:05:06 | 0:05:12
We can't call it a surprise but this
is an important twist. Just | 0:05:12 | 0:05:19
yesterday Mr Navalny went to the
electoral committee and submitted | 0:05:19 | 0:05:22
all the signatures and documents
needed and today, just a few hours | 0:05:22 | 0:05:27
later on, basically, he was rejected
because the head of the electoral | 0:05:27 | 0:05:31
committee said he has outstanding
criminal convictions. Mr Navalny | 0:05:31 | 0:05:39
argues that human rights
organisations around the world says | 0:05:39 | 0:05:41
those charges were politically
motivated. The Russians quarters | 0:05:41 | 0:05:45
insist that is what happened. He
can't run. In return. First of all, | 0:05:45 | 0:05:54
he said he would appeal the decision
and second of all, if the ban | 0:05:54 | 0:05:58
continues, he would call to boycott
the actions. This adds a small | 0:05:58 | 0:06:03
injury could to those elections --
intrigue. Because people believe Mr | 0:06:03 | 0:06:11
Putin will win but the question is
the percentage and what the turnout | 0:06:11 | 0:06:15
will be. | 0:06:15 | 0:06:16
Russia's Deputy Prime Minister,
Vitaly Mutko, is stepping down | 0:06:16 | 0:06:19
temporarily as the country's most
senior football official. | 0:06:19 | 0:06:21
He says he wants to concentrate
on contesting a lifetime ban | 0:06:21 | 0:06:24
from the Olympic Games,
over state-sponsored doping. | 0:06:24 | 0:06:26
He will remain as chief organiser
of next year's World Cup in Russia. | 0:06:26 | 0:06:31

from old computers and appliances. | 0:16:53 | 0:16:56
The leftovers are sent
either for recycling, | 0:16:56 | 0:16:58
or upstairs, to the
trash design team. | 0:16:58 | 0:17:02
What we do is that we collect
specific kinds of garbage - | 0:17:02 | 0:17:05
that means electric
and electronic equipment. | 0:17:05 | 0:17:13
We make, design objects
and jewellery, and we offer | 0:17:13 | 0:17:16
the old garbage an opportunity
to get reused, or to get upcycled. | 0:17:16 | 0:17:27
They turn vinyl records into clocks,
and dead keyboards into rings. | 0:17:28 | 0:17:30
The glass from washing machine doors
becomes sandblasted bowls, | 0:17:31 | 0:17:33
complete with patterns. | 0:17:33 | 0:17:36
And it's not just about
transforming trash. | 0:17:36 | 0:17:38
Lives are changed here, too. | 0:17:38 | 0:17:44
Many of the people who work
here are the long-term unemployed. | 0:17:44 | 0:17:47
Susann says she has been
given a new chance. | 0:17:47 | 0:17:52
TRANSLATION: It is cool. | 0:17:52 | 0:18:00
I find it really super. | 0:18:00 | 0:18:01
You make something new out
of old stuff, but it hurts me | 0:18:01 | 0:18:04
when I have to cut up
these old records. | 0:18:04 | 0:18:07
I recently had an old Abba album
and I thought "No!", | 0:18:07 | 0:18:10
and then it became a notebook. | 0:18:10 | 0:18:11
But that's the way it goes. | 0:18:11 | 0:18:13
And some of Vienna's famous
Christmas markets are also | 0:18:13 | 0:18:15
getting in on the act. | 0:18:15 | 0:18:25
Trash design is on offer alongside
the gingerbread and mulled wine. | 0:18:25 | 0:18:28
The workshop has its own stalls,
where products are on sale, | 0:18:28 | 0:18:31
often for pretty prices. | 0:18:32 | 0:18:33
These items have come a long way
from the city's rubbish dumps | 0:18:33 | 0:18:36
to the magnificent surroundings
of one of Austria's old royal | 0:18:36 | 0:18:39
palaces, and when it comes
to Christmas presents this year, | 0:18:39 | 0:18:41
the designers are hoping that it
will be upcycling all the way. | 0:18:41 | 0:18:49
Christmas is meant to be
a time of giving for all, | 0:18:49 | 0:18:52
but one family from the UK has
gone further than most | 0:18:52 | 0:18:55
with their seasonal goodwill. | 0:18:55 | 0:18:56
The Clarkes have collected clothes,
sleeping bags and food, | 0:18:56 | 0:18:58
and drove to Calais. | 0:18:58 | 0:18:59
They've been giving them to some
of the thousands of refugees | 0:18:59 | 0:19:02
who are still in the area,
despite the closure of the so-called | 0:19:03 | 0:19:06
jungle camp. | 0:19:06 | 0:19:06
Here's their story
in their own words. | 0:19:06 | 0:19:08
I'm Katie Clarke from
Halifax, West Yorkshire. | 0:19:08 | 0:19:10
Good morning! | 0:19:10 | 0:19:11
We have had people
leaving donations. | 0:19:11 | 0:19:12
Thanks very much, that's great,
and they are clearly marked. | 0:19:12 | 0:19:15
So we've filled our van up
with mats, sleeping bags, | 0:19:15 | 0:19:18
blankets, hats, socks, gloves. | 0:19:18 | 0:19:19
Bye, everyone! | 0:19:19 | 0:19:22
My name's Andy Clarke. | 0:19:22 | 0:19:23
There are some people who say
that they should stay | 0:19:23 | 0:19:26
where they are and try to manage it
within their countries. | 0:19:26 | 0:19:30
I mean, my own personal view
is that you don't move | 0:19:30 | 0:19:33
away from your family of origin,
your friends of origin, | 0:19:33 | 0:19:36
your culture, your religion,
your home, everything, | 0:19:36 | 0:19:45
and put yourself into the most
precarious positions, | 0:19:45 | 0:19:47
if there is not an extremely good,
valid reason for doing that. | 0:19:47 | 0:19:59
Nice to meet you. | 0:19:59 | 0:20:00
A lot of the individuals
that we speak to are | 0:20:00 | 0:20:02
professional people. | 0:20:02 | 0:20:03
Unfortunately, they have felt
that their lives are in danger, | 0:20:03 | 0:20:06
and that's why they've had to move. | 0:20:06 | 0:20:10
I'm Nikki. | 0:20:10 | 0:20:11
I think they are probably just
trying to keep themselves busy, | 0:20:11 | 0:20:14
aren't they, playing football. | 0:20:14 | 0:20:15
We met some guys who really
kindly took us to show | 0:20:15 | 0:20:18
where they had been living. | 0:20:18 | 0:20:19
So we followed them down this little
path that started to get | 0:20:19 | 0:20:22
muddier and muddier. | 0:20:22 | 0:20:27
It looks like chaos, doesn't it? | 0:20:27 | 0:20:29
It's just really, really shocking,
and it's really sad that anybody | 0:20:29 | 0:20:32
has to live like that. | 0:20:32 | 0:20:34
We can't go back. | 0:20:34 | 0:20:35
In my country, there
is a very dangerous guy. | 0:20:35 | 0:20:38
That is why we live here. | 0:20:38 | 0:20:39
Here is safe. | 0:20:39 | 0:20:40
I know it is not a good
life, but we are safe. | 0:20:40 | 0:20:46
Seeing the living conditions
and the desperation, | 0:20:46 | 0:20:48
yeah, things were shocking,
but it was also really quite, | 0:20:48 | 0:20:51
quite nice to have that
opportunity to talk to them. | 0:20:51 | 0:21:02
Queen Elizabeth has been attending
the traditional Christmas Day | 0:21:02 | 0:21:04
service along with other members
of the royal family, | 0:21:04 | 0:21:07
including Prince Harry
and his fiancee Meghan Markle. | 0:21:07 | 0:21:09
In her Christmas Day broadcast
the Queen paid tribute to the cities | 0:21:09 | 0:21:12
of Manchester and London,
for the way in which they dealt | 0:21:12 | 0:21:15
with this year's terrorist attacks. | 0:21:15 | 0:21:16
Our royal correspondent
Nicholas Witchell has more. | 0:21:16 | 0:21:22
It's a day for family,
with its own established pattern. | 0:21:22 | 0:21:25
For the Royal Family,
that means a visit to church, | 0:21:25 | 0:21:27
led by the Queen. | 0:21:27 | 0:21:28
And there, very much at home
already, the Royal Family's | 0:21:28 | 0:21:31
soon-to-be newest
member, Meghan Markle. | 0:21:31 | 0:21:32
Alert to everything
that was going on, | 0:21:32 | 0:21:34
and waiting for her cue
in terms of royal protocol. | 0:21:34 | 0:21:40
A neat curtsey, as
the Queen left by car. | 0:21:40 | 0:21:42
And then walking across to speak
to members of the crowd who had | 0:21:42 | 0:21:46
been hoping to meet her,
before lunch, and then | 0:21:46 | 0:21:48
the Queen's Christmas broadcast. | 0:21:48 | 0:21:51
# God save the Queen...# | 0:21:51 | 0:21:52
The central
message of this year's | 0:21:52 | 0:21:54
broadcast was one of solidarity
with two British cities. | 0:21:54 | 0:21:58
This Christmas, I think
of London and Manchester, | 0:21:58 | 0:22:00
whose powerful identities shone
through over the past 12 months | 0:22:00 | 0:22:03
in the face of appalling attacks. | 0:22:03 | 0:22:10
The Queen said it had been
a privilege to witness | 0:22:10 | 0:22:13
the extraordinary bravery
of young people injured | 0:22:13 | 0:22:15
in the Manchester attack. | 0:22:15 | 0:22:17
Very wicked. | 0:22:17 | 0:22:18
Mmm. | 0:22:19 | 0:22:20 | |
To target that sort of thing. | 0:22:20 | 0:22:22
Yeah. | 0:22:22 | 0:22:23 | |
Yeah, it's... | 0:22:23 | 0:22:25
She spoke, too, about
what she called the "sheer | 0:22:25 | 0:22:27
awfulness" of the
Grenfell Tower fire. | 0:22:27 | 0:22:32
Our thoughts and prayers
are with all those who died, | 0:22:32 | 0:22:35
and those who lost so much. | 0:22:35 | 0:22:36
And we are indebted to members
of the emergency services, | 0:22:36 | 0:22:39
who risked their own lives this
past year saving others. | 0:22:39 | 0:22:42
Television has made it possible
for many of you to see me | 0:22:42 | 0:22:45
in your homes on Christmas Day... | 0:22:45 | 0:22:56
And there were personal touches. | 0:22:56 | 0:22:58
The Queen recalled that it's 60
years since she delivered the first | 0:22:58 | 0:23:02
live Christmas Day TV broadcast. | 0:23:02 | 0:23:03
And that is how I imagine you now... | 0:23:03 | 0:23:05
Six decades on, the presenter
has evolved somewhat. | 0:23:05 | 0:23:08
And it's 70 years since she and
the Duke of Edinburgh were married. | 0:23:08 | 0:23:11
He retired from solo
duties this year, but... | 0:23:11 | 0:23:13
I know his support and unique sense
of humour will remain as strong | 0:23:13 | 0:23:17
as ever, as we enjoy spending time
this Christmas with our family, | 0:23:17 | 0:23:20
and look forward to welcoming
new members into it next year. | 0:23:20 | 0:23:31
A Christmas message
which acknowledges the passage | 0:23:31 | 0:23:33
of time, but which
reminds us that more | 0:23:33 | 0:23:35
than six decades now
after she came to the throne, | 0:23:35 | 0:23:38
the Queen remains strongly committed
to her role as head of state. | 0:23:38 | 0:23:41
Nicholas Witchell, BBC News,
at Buckingham Palace. | 0:23:41 | 0:23:50
If you've enjoyed a day
of festive excess - | 0:23:50 | 0:23:52
eating and drinking
a little too much - | 0:23:52 | 0:23:54
perhaps the most you want to do
to exert yourself is to try | 0:23:55 | 0:23:58
and reach for the remote control. | 0:23:58 | 0:24:00
So spare a thought
for the competitors | 0:24:00 | 0:24:02
of the Wingsuit Flying World Cup. | 0:24:02 | 0:24:03
They spent most of their Christmas
jumping out of planes or balloons. | 0:24:03 | 0:24:06
The event took place
in Jinngu in Yunnan province, | 0:24:06 | 0:24:09
as the BBC's Tim Allman explains. | 0:24:09 | 0:24:12
You know what they say. What goes up
must come down. A principal they | 0:24:15 | 0:24:23
understand all too well that the
Wingsuit Flying World Cup. -- | 0:24:23 | 0:24:28
principle. Teams from around the
globe competing in this extreme and | 0:24:28 | 0:24:32
hair raising sport. TRANSLATION: I
travelled more than 400 kilometres | 0:24:32 | 0:24:37
to see this. We arrived here early
in the morning, just to watch the | 0:24:37 | 0:24:42
wing suit flying show. It is
spectacular! You can say that again. | 0:24:42 | 0:24:47
A couple of skydivers perform a 360
degrees rotating nosedive. While | 0:24:47 | 0:24:55
others piggybacked from their
teammates. Not everybody was happy | 0:24:55 | 0:25:00
with how things turned out.
TRANSLATION: I think our performance | 0:25:00 | 0:25:06
this time didn't reflect our real
strength. We will get to our best | 0:25:06 | 0:25:09
through regular competition. I have
we perform better next time. The | 0:25:09 | 0:25:13
Chinese team finished third overall,
behind the winds France and the | 0:25:13 | 0:25:17
United States, who came second. It
is a non-profit event, and the local | 0:25:17 | 0:25:22
school received a cheque worth more
than $30,000. So some charitable | 0:25:22 | 0:25:27
spirit, combined with a little heart
stopping terror. How can you get | 0:25:27 | 0:25:32
more festive than that? | 0:25:32 | 0:25:38
A more sedate sport, cricket, and
the Boxing Day test between | 0:25:38 | 0:25:41
Australia and England is under way
in England. England are just paying | 0:25:41 | 0:25:45
-- playing for pride, having already
lost the Ashes. Australia have | 0:25:45 | 0:25:49
elected to bat on what is proving a
flat wicket. Approaching lunch they | 0:25:49 | 0:25:53
are and 92. -- they are on. | 0:25:53 | 0:25:58
Don't forget you can get in touch
with me and some of the team | 0:25:58 | 0:26:02 |
