Hello and welcome to BBC World News.

0:01:190:01:21

The former World footballer

of the year, George Weah,

0:01:210:01:24

has won the Liberian

presidential election.

0:01:240:01:25

Mr Weah played for a string

of football clubs, including AC

0:01:260:01:28

Milan, Chelsea and Manchester City.

0:01:290:01:34

He entered politics

after his retirement in 2002,

0:01:350:01:37

and will succeed

Ellen Johnson Sirleaf -

0:01:370:01:39

Africa's first elected

female President.

0:01:390:01:40

From Monrovia,

Umaru Fofana reports.

0:01:400:01:40

Hundreds of jubilant supporters of

George Weah took to the streets

0:01:510:01:54

minutes after the Electoral

Commission announced the results.

0:01:540:01:56

They charted, it was George Weah we

wanted an George Weah we clocked.

0:01:560:02:02

The capital reverberated with

singing and deafening cough islands.

0:02:020:02:06

It was never in doubt the former

world footballer of the year would

0:02:060:02:10

win. Election observers both

domestic and foreign plays the

0:02:100:02:15

conduct of the poll. This man was

used a winning trophies but found it

0:02:150:02:19

hard to win this, the biggest award

of his life. Liberia has stabilised

0:02:190:02:23

after a decade of bloody civil war

but it's still suffering with abject

0:02:230:02:28

poverty and corruption.

0:02:280:02:33

Chris Fomunyoh

is part of the international

0:02:330:02:35

election observer

delegation to Liberia.

0:02:350:02:37

He's the Senior Associate

and Regional Director of the Central

0:02:370:02:40

and West Africa for the National

Democratic Institute.

0:02:400:02:42

He joins me now from Monrovia.

0:02:420:02:44

First of all, just how historic is

this handover?

This is huge and its

0:02:440:02:52

historic. Firstly, because it's the

first in seven decades that we are

0:02:520:02:59

changing political power through the

ballot box with a democratically

0:02:590:03:02

elected president, handing over to

another democratically elected

0:03:020:03:05

president. And it shows African

youth that someone from very humble

0:03:050:03:12

beginnings, through hard work and

perseverance, is now going to be the

0:03:120:03:17

head of state of Africa's oldest

country. It is a stirring moment of

0:03:170:03:24

this country and the Liberian people

should be proud of what they have

0:03:240:03:28

done.

What is the mood like in Monro

Vieux? -- in the capital?

The mood

0:03:280:03:38

is tested. Especially after the

announcement of the results.

0:03:380:03:45

Observers issued a report today

which which spoke of how peaceful

0:03:450:03:52

process has been and some of the

improvements that have undertaken

0:03:520:03:57

the elections in October and they

set the stage for the jubilation of

0:03:570:04:01

supporters and the fact that

supporters have been very peaceful

0:04:010:04:05

as of now.

How is the administration

of the selection handles compared to

0:04:050:04:13

back in October? What were the

improvements that were made?

Of

0:04:130:04:17

course, there were very noticeable

improvements. Notably in the

0:04:170:04:22

management of the killing and the

polling places, more attention paid

0:04:220:04:27

to training. Making sure there were

signs with serial numbers so that

0:04:270:04:43

people will know immediately which

polling place they needed to go to

0:04:430:04:47

vote. We did see significant

improvement with the votes. Compare

0:04:470:05:06

to what we saw in October and the

Electoral Commission needs to be

0:05:060:05:11

commended for that as well.

And

presumably, the local political

0:05:110:05:15

parties have an important role to

play in that.

That's correct. We

0:05:150:05:20

noted in all of the polling centres

we visited that the two parties that

0:05:200:05:26

were in competition had polling

agents, representatives of the

0:05:260:05:31

candidates and parties, watching the

polls from beginning to end. All

0:05:310:05:35

through the voting as well is during

the tabulation of election results.

0:05:350:05:39

That has contributed to the

confidence that the people of

0:05:390:05:46

Liberia have seen thus far.

Do you

think the fact that the margin of

0:05:460:05:51

victory is so large is helping how

voters look at this vote?

Yes,

0:05:510:05:57

that's one of the factors but also

the political leaders of Liberia on

0:05:570:06:03

both sides have come to the

recognition that it's important to

0:06:030:06:08

them to send a clear message to

their supporters that Liberians want

0:06:080:06:13

peace, librarians are committed to

peaceful elections and it will never

0:06:130:06:17

be on anybody's interest to disrupt

what is clearly the chosen will of

0:06:170:06:23

the Liberian people. -- Liberians.

What kind of message does this send

0:06:230:06:29

out to other struggling democracies

in Africa?

Certainly with West

0:06:290:06:41

Africa, the ECOAS countries have

been dashed ECOWAS countries have

0:06:410:06:48

been doing well and what is

happening now in Liberia is a

0:06:480:06:52

testament to ECOWAS and its future

trajectory for countries in the sub

0:06:520:07:00

region. In the same time, it sends a

strong message across Africa that a

0:07:000:07:06

younger generation of African

leaders is emerging that wants to

0:07:060:07:10

derive legitimacy from their fellow

citizens and it's important that we

0:07:100:07:16

hold peaceful and meaningful and

credible elections that can set the

0:07:160:07:22

foundations for countries to be

better positioned to address other

0:07:220:07:26

challenge is and this is a happy

moment for Liberia, for West Africa

0:07:260:07:31

and for Africa as a hole.

Thank you

very much for joining us.

It's my

0:07:310:07:38

pleasure, thank you.

0:07:380:07:40

Let's take a look at some

of the other stories making

0:07:400:07:44

the news.

0:07:440:07:45

In Venezuela, hundreds of people

have been protesting in the poorer

0:07:450:07:48

parts of Caracas against

the shortage of promised pork -

0:07:480:07:50

a key ingredient for

traditional Christmas meals.

0:07:500:07:52

President Maduro has accused

Portugal of sabotaging deliveries.

0:07:520:07:54

A Portuguese company denied

the claims and said Venezuela

0:07:540:08:01

still owed Portuguese firms almost

$50 million from pork

0:08:010:08:03

deliveries made in 2016.

0:08:030:08:04

Apple has published a letter

to customers apologising for what it

0:08:040:08:07

calls a misunderstanding around

older iPhones being slowed down.

0:08:080:08:10

The company recently admitted

that it was deliberately slowing

0:08:100:08:17

down older phones in order to

compensate for degrading batteries.

0:08:170:08:26

Italy's President Sergio Mattarella

has dissolved parliament ahead

0:08:260:08:28

of an election scheduled

for March the 4th.

0:08:280:08:30

Immigration is likely

to be the key issue,

0:08:300:08:32

with the anti-establishment

Five Star movement currently leading

0:08:320:08:34

in opinion polls.

0:08:340:08:44

Officials in Alabama have formally

certified Democrat Doug Jones

0:08:440:08:48

as the winner of the state's

senate race.

0:08:480:08:50

This was despite attempts

by his defeated Republican rival,

0:08:500:08:52

Roy Moore, to stop his

certification going ahead.

0:08:520:08:54

Mr Moore filed a last minute lawsuit

to challenge the result,

0:08:540:08:57

alleging voter fraud,

but a judge denied the request.

0:08:580:09:00

Roy Moore, whose campaign had been

plagued by allegations of sexual

0:09:000:09:06

misconduct, lost narrowly.

0:09:060:09:10

His lawyers said there'd been

a higher-than-expected turnout.

0:09:100:09:13

But State officials

were emphatic that they found no

0:09:130:09:16

evidence of fraud.

0:09:160:09:20

I don't think there is any doubt on

the minds of anybody in this room or

0:09:200:09:24

anyone hearing the sound of my voice

that if there was never a question

0:09:240:09:28

about whether or not the State of

Alabama conducts honest and fair and

0:09:280:09:32

safe and secure a elections, that

question has been eliminated from

0:09:320:09:35

anyone's thought and mind, period.

0:09:350:09:38

A suicide bombing in the Afghan

capital, Kabul, has claimed

0:09:380:09:41

the lives of at least 40 people

and injured more than 80 others,

0:09:410:09:44

with women and children

among the casualties.

0:09:450:09:46

The Islamic State group says it

carried out the attack,

0:09:460:09:51

which targeted a cultural

organisation and news agency

0:09:510:09:53

in the west of the capital.

0:09:540:09:57

In recent months, so-called

Islamic State has attacked many

0:09:570:10:01

Shia Muslim targets in this area

of Kabul, where the majority

0:10:010:10:04

of the city's Shia population lives.

0:10:040:10:06

Our correspondent in Kabul,

Zia Shahreya, has sent this report.

0:10:060:10:08

The force of the explosion

is clear to see.

0:10:080:10:11

Among the rubble, relatives

desperately search for their loved

0:10:110:10:13

ones.

0:10:130:10:13

But there was little left behind.

0:10:140:10:15

The bomb went off inside this

building, a cultural centre and also

0:10:150:10:22

home to an Afghan news agency.

0:10:220:10:24

Students had been marking the 38th

anniversary of the Soviet

0:10:240:10:27

invasion of Afghanistan.

0:10:270:10:28

The suicide bomber apparently has

entered through that way,

0:10:280:10:43

inside this hall, where the seminar

was happening, and the hall was full

0:10:430:10:47

of people, students,

female students, male students,

0:10:470:10:49

from different

universities in Kabul.

0:10:490:10:50

TRANSLATION: I saw many dead

in the area, I was looking

0:10:500:10:53

for my cousin but I

could not find his body.

0:10:530:10:56

I'm not sure what happened to him.

0:10:560:10:58

The number of dead

people has increased.

0:10:580:11:00

After the explosion,

ambulances took the injured

0:11:000:11:02

to the hospitals nearby.

0:11:020:11:03

This man, one of dozens badly

hurt in the explosion.

0:11:030:11:07

Some of the wounded

were taken in for surgery.

0:11:070:11:14

TRANSLATION: A total of 35

dead were registered

0:11:140:11:19

here and 20 others wounded.

0:11:190:11:24

There are men, women,

and children among the injured.

0:11:240:11:29

For some waiting outside for news,

it was all too much.

0:11:290:11:32

Back in the area, to the west

of the capital, where the bomb went

0:11:320:11:36

off, armed guards patrol.

0:11:360:11:37

The initial blast was followed

by two other explosions,

0:11:370:11:39

but no-one was hurt in those.

0:11:390:11:42

So who was behind the attack?

0:11:430:11:50

So-called Islamic State has

claimed responsibility,

0:11:500:11:59

saying it targeted the centre

with a suicide bomber

0:11:590:12:01

and other bombs.

0:12:010:12:03

It's been behind a number of other

attacks on Shia targets

0:12:040:12:07

across the country in recent months.

0:12:070:12:08

The President's spokesman called

the attack "an unpardonable crime

0:12:080:12:11

against humanity" and pledged

to destroy terrorist groups.

0:12:110:12:13

Turkey and the US are to

resume issuing visas

0:12:130:12:15

to each other's citizens.

0:12:150:12:19

They'd been suspended after a bitter

row, when Turkey arrested a local

0:12:200:12:23

embassy employee in October.

0:12:230:12:24

But in statements earlier,

the Turkish embassy in Washington,

0:12:240:12:27

and the US embassy in Ankara said

the issue had been resolved.

0:12:270:12:30

With me is Seref Isler

from our Turkish Service.

0:12:300:12:36

First of all, how did this

disagreement start?

Back in October,

0:12:360:12:41

the Turkish authorities wanted to

detain some US embassy staff over

0:12:410:12:47

what they claimed to be links to the

coup attempt of 2016. After the coup

0:12:470:12:55

attempt of last year, Turkey

launched a very large operation to

0:12:550:13:00

find the perpetrators and they claim

it was masterminded by a cleric

0:13:000:13:03

living in the US so in the Turkish

authorities wanted to detain these

0:13:030:13:08

US embassy staff members, they

stopped Visa services to Turkish

0:13:080:13:15

citizens in Turkey in turn stopped

these services for US citizens.

The

0:13:150:13:21

last day, some resolution to this

but slightly messy?

Precisely. The

0:13:210:13:28

US is stating they received security

assurances from Turkey and that why

0:13:280:13:31

they were able to resume Visa

services but Turkey is saying they

0:13:310:13:36

are resuming the Visa services but

note security assurances are made

0:13:360:13:40

and we don't know what happened

behind closed doors but it's highly

0:13:400:13:44

inconceivable that two countries

would, by chance, start issuing

0:13:440:13:48

visas again. Some chat should have

taken place. We just don't know any

0:13:480:13:54

details.

Arrests aside, other issues

have made it difficult?

The US and

0:13:540:14:07

Turkey are staunch Nato allies. I

remember a time when Turkey sided

0:14:070:14:12

with the US in the first Gulf War

against Iraq, for example. The two

0:14:120:14:18

countries have disagreed, such as

with Syria. Turkey is of the US's

0:14:180:14:22

opinion but is talking to Russia and

Turkey has reacted angrily when the

0:14:220:14:28

US recognised the capital of Israel

as Jerusalem and other problems in

0:14:280:14:31

the region where they might have

been some disagreements but Donald

0:14:310:14:37

Trump has a tower in Istanbul so

this is a messy situation.

To put it

0:14:370:14:42

mildly. Always good to get your

analysis. Seref Isler about.

Hanging around for a flight

longer than you expected.

0:17:210:17:23

It's not much fun, especially

when the queues are just getting

0:17:230:17:26

longer and you find out your

delayed, it's cancelled.

0:17:290:17:34

More than 12 hours after Sarah's

to take off from Stansted,

and will now fly tomorrow.

0:17:390:17:40

I only found out literally,

I think it was three hours

0:17:410:17:43

after my flight was supposed

to leave, that it was cancelled.

0:17:440:17:50

And there was no boards to tell us

that it was delayed or anything,

0:17:500:17:53

so it was just literally,

like going backwards and forwards

0:17:530:17:56

between the one person

that was there, kind of thing.

0:17:560:17:59

I just ended up lining up

for like ten hours to try and get

a new flight.

0:18:030:18:03

Did you get any sleep at all?

0:18:030:18:05

No.

0:18:050:18:06

I think I've been

awake 25 hours now.

0:18:060:18:08

You only need to head to social

media to get an idea

0:18:080:18:11

of the frustration some people

here felt last night.

0:18:110:18:13

One person tweeted it was

a shambles, another posted a picture

0:18:140:18:17

of people sleeping on seats.

0:18:170:18:18

Stansted Airport says it's cleared

the backlog of stranded passengers

0:18:180:18:21

and things are returning to normal.

0:18:210:18:24

But they say there still could be

delays because of the weather.

0:18:240:18:30

And the weather's been causing

problems elsewhere, too.

0:18:300:18:32

In the Cairngorms, three climbers

had to be rescued after getting lost

0:18:320:18:35

in blizzard conditions.

0:18:350:18:36

The rescue took five hours.

0:18:360:18:38

The wintry weather is not

going away, as we are being told

0:18:390:18:42

to make sure our vehicles

are safe for the road.

0:18:420:18:47

Check your tyres, make sure

you've got some good tread

0:18:470:18:49

and they're well inflated,

that should keep you safe

0:18:490:18:52

on the road, they keep you gripped

to the road, after all.

0:18:520:18:55

And pack accordingly,

so have your own winter breakdown

0:18:550:18:57

kit with plenty of spare

warm and dry clothing,

0:18:580:19:00

a flask, some snacks, a shovel,

and certainly a fully

0:19:000:19:03

charged mobile phone.

0:19:030:19:06

Today in Inverness, people

were enjoying the snow,

0:19:060:19:08

but there's more on the way

for Scotland and the Met Office

0:19:080:19:11

is warning that tonight could be

the coldest night of the year.

0:19:110:19:23

A woman who was found dead

in an outbuilding in Finsbury Park,

0:19:230:19:26

in North London, has

been named by police.

0:19:260:19:30

Officers say 22-year-old

Iuliana Tudos died as a result

0:19:300:19:32

of a stab wound and a head injury.

0:19:320:19:34

It's thought she was

killed on Christmas Eve.

0:19:340:19:45

A murder investigation has been

started.

0:19:450:19:48

The iconic Miss America beauty

pageant is in turmoil,

0:19:480:19:50

over an e-mail scandal that's

forced its most senior board members

0:19:500:19:53

to step down.

0:19:530:19:54

The Huffington Post has published

e-mails, which allegedly show

0:19:540:19:57

pageant officials making vulgar

comments on contestants' weight,

0:19:570:19:59

sex lives, intellect -

even wishing one was dead.

0:19:590:20:03

Miss America executive director

Sam Haskell has resigned,

0:20:030:20:05

as well as president Josh Randle,

and some other board members.

0:20:050:20:08

An online petition with tens

of thousands of signatures

0:20:080:20:10

is gaining traction.

0:20:100:20:15

It's calling for everyone

on the board to be sacked.

0:20:150:20:22

Every second, the world drinks

35,000 cups of coffee,

0:20:220:20:24

so it's little wonder that it's

a $200 billion industry.

0:20:240:20:27

Now, new figures show how more

and more of that money

0:20:270:20:30

is finding its way back

to coffee farmers,

0:20:300:20:32

thanks to ethically sourced

and sustainable coffee.

0:20:320:20:34

Jonathan Josephs reports.

0:20:340:20:41

There's never been more choice.

0:20:410:20:45

We're all drinking more coffee,

and we're prepared to pay more

0:20:450:20:48

for it, but in return,

we want to know more

0:20:480:20:51

about where it is from

and how it got to our cup.

0:20:510:20:54

This coffee shop in a trendy part

of East London is typical.

0:20:540:20:57

They roast their own beans,

which are carefully selected

0:20:570:21:00

for the benefits

they bring farmers.

0:21:000:21:01

For example, we have

a Ugandan coffee.

0:21:020:21:06

We've managed to find a farmer

there that is producing some really

0:21:060:21:09

good coffee,

and we talk to our customers

0:21:090:21:11

about the impact that makes

in that area,

0:21:120:21:14

because there was a lot

of warfare in Uganda.

0:21:140:21:16

Telling the story of how those beans

made their way from the farm

0:21:160:21:20

to the cup is an essential part

of the growing branding

0:21:200:21:23

and marketing effort involved

in making coffee about the wider

0:21:230:21:25

experience, as well as the drinking.

0:21:250:21:27

It means more profits

throughout the supply chain,

0:21:270:21:29

as new figures from the UN's

World Intellectual Property

0:21:290:21:32

Organisation show.

0:21:320:21:37

For a pound of coffee beans that

end up in the instant

0:21:370:21:44

sold in supermarkets,

the roaster can get over $4,

0:21:450:21:47

but the export price is just £1.09.

0:21:470:21:49

The farmer gets most of that,

but if the same beans end up

0:21:490:21:54

in a large western coffee chain,

the roaster can get $8.50,

0:21:540:21:59

but the farmer and their community

also do better, getting $2.89.

0:21:590:22:02

But when the new wave of socially

aware customer pays a premium

0:22:020:22:05

for higher standards,

the roaster can get over $17.45.

0:22:050:22:14

But the export price

also rises to $5.14.

0:22:140:22:17

That third wave is a clear incentive

for farmers to invest,

0:22:170:22:20

in turning their beans into a coffee

with superior standards

0:22:200:22:22

when it comes to sustainability

and fair trade.

0:22:220:22:24

A farmer can be roughly three

and a half times better off

0:22:240:22:28

by taking advantage

of the third wave, and selling

0:22:280:22:30

into the third wave context.

0:22:300:22:31

Now, that obviously

is a huge difference,

0:22:320:22:39

and it brings with it many,

many benefits for the farmer,

0:22:390:22:42

obviously a higher

standard of income.

0:22:420:22:44

Also looking to cash in are the two

companies that sell the world more

0:22:440:22:47

coffee than anyone else.

0:22:470:22:51

Nestle and JAB have been spending

billions buying smaller rivals

0:22:510:22:54

like California's Bluebottle Coffee.

0:22:540:23:01

The trend started in the US

West Coast and has definitely been

0:23:010:23:04

expanding into other parts

of the world and some

0:23:040:23:06

of the larger roasting companies

like JAB and Nestle,

0:23:060:23:09

they want to start enjoying some

of that profitability,

0:23:090:23:17

so we have started to see a lot

of acquisations with larger

0:23:170:23:21

An increasing amount of the coffee

we are drinking is of the expensive

0:23:260:23:29

type that millennials

like to post on social media.

0:23:290:23:32

That is stimulating profits

throughout the industry.

0:23:320:23:34

The immense power of social media

was once again in evidence

0:23:340:23:37

at Christmas, when a welder

from London left his Christmas wage

0:23:370:23:40

packet in a local pub in Wimbledon.

0:23:400:23:41

More than a million people responded

to an appeal on Twitter and Facebook

0:23:420:23:45

and identified Mariusz

so that the pay packet could be

0:23:450:23:48

returned - six days

after he lost it.

0:23:480:23:50

Our correspondent Chi Chi Izundu

takes up the story.

0:23:500:23:52

This is the story of a welder,

a pub and a lost wage packet.

0:23:520:23:58

Last Thursday, after a few

hundred people had been

0:23:580:24:00

here at The Alexandra pub

celebrating their Christmas parties,

0:24:000:24:04

at the end of the night,

a small brown envelope stuffed

0:24:040:24:07

with cash was spotted on the floor.

0:24:070:24:09

The only reason I realised

it was a wage packet

0:24:090:24:13

was because I used to get paid

in similar packets when I first

0:24:130:24:17

moved to this country.

0:24:170:24:19

All they had was the name

Mariusz and £600.

0:24:190:24:21

The landlord and his wife posted

a picture on social media

0:24:210:24:27

which was retweeted by author JK

Rowling and then hundreds

0:24:270:24:30

of thousands around the world

joined in the search.

0:24:300:24:32

We did not find him straightaway

and a couple of celebrities

0:24:320:24:35

retweeted it and it went bonkers.

0:24:350:24:37

My phone was like a fridge.

0:24:370:24:40

Buzzing all the time!

0:24:400:24:44

We were getting messages

from all over the world,

0:24:440:24:46

so much interest trying to find this

guy, people contacting

0:24:460:24:49

asking if we found them?

0:24:490:24:50

From Canada and America

and Australia, everywhere.

0:24:500:24:54

All over the world.

0:24:540:24:55

And then what happened?

0:24:550:24:56

Lo and behold, yesterday,

he walked in the door and said

0:24:560:24:59

hello, I'm Mariusz

and I believe you've

0:24:590:25:01

got my money!

0:25:010:25:02

It was like the biggest

anti-climax in history,

0:25:020:25:04

he just wandered in

0:25:040:25:05

and he said, I think

you've got my money.

0:25:050:25:07

Mariusz explained he took

out his phone to take pictures

0:25:070:25:11

of his Christmas party,

and that's probably when his wage

0:25:110:25:15

slip fell from his pocket

and under this chair,

0:25:150:25:18

and he didn't notice

until about a day later.

0:25:180:25:23

Mariusz had not seen

the social media posts,

0:25:230:25:26

it was his son who alerted him

to them and he may have kept

0:25:260:25:30

the loss quiet from his wife

to have, as he called it,

0:25:300:25:33

a stress-free Christmas.

0:25:330:25:34

He came in yesterday and got it.

0:25:340:25:36

In a show of gratitude,

he gave Nobby a generous tip.

0:25:360:25:37

And that is a nice, positive way to

finish this half-hour. There are

0:25:450:25:50

plenty more news updates and

analysis on our website and you can

0:25:500:25:54
