were three people in the van but of course you detained on who is in | :00:00. | :00:00.
police Good morning, it's | :00:00. | :00:16.
Monday the 19th of June. As van drives in two crowd of people | :00:17. | :00:30.
outside a mosque. The incident happened just after midnight. Many | :00:31. | :00:33.
of the victims had just finished even impress after breaking their | :00:34. | :00:40.
Ramadan fast. This is the Senior this morning as police continue to | :00:41. | :00:45.
deal with what they described as a major incident. | :00:46. | :00:55.
Good morning, it's Monday the 19th of June. | :00:56. | :00:58.
All eyes are on Brussels as historic talks begin today to take Britain | :00:59. | :01:11.
out of the European Union, we'll be there live throughout the morning. | :01:12. | :01:19.
And while the politicians are talking, I am at Smithfield markets | :01:20. | :01:26.
in Manchester to find out what businesses want from the | :01:27. | :01:27.
negotiations. As police release the first pictures | :01:28. | :01:27.
from inside the charred remains of Grenfell Tower, a nationwide | :01:28. | :01:30.
minutes silence will take place this morning to remember those | :01:31. | :01:33.
who lost their lives. In sport, the American Brooks Koepka | :01:34. | :01:45.
equalled the tournaments lowing -- lowest winning score to take his | :01:46. | :01:47.
first major. Today, for many of us, hot and | :01:48. | :02:01.
sunny. Temperatures peaking around 33 Celsius in the south. In the | :02:02. | :02:06.
north, at different story. There is a weather front producing thick | :02:07. | :02:11.
cloud and some drizzle. I will have more in about 15 minutes. | :02:12. | :02:12.
One man has been killed and eight people have been taken to three | :02:13. | :02:18.
separate hospitals after a van drove into a crowd of pedestrians | :02:19. | :02:21.
Theresa May has said police are treating the incident | :02:22. | :02:26.
near Finsbury Park "as a potential terrorist attack" and counter | :02:27. | :02:29.
The Prime Minister has also confirmed she will be chairing | :02:30. | :02:36.
a meeting of the cabinet's emergency Cobra Committee later this morning. | :02:37. | :02:39.
Officers have cordoned off a large area close | :02:40. | :02:41.
Many of the victims are believed to have just left evening prayers, | :02:42. | :02:47.
The London Ambulance Service deployed sixty medics to the scene - | :02:48. | :03:18.
including ambulance crews, advance paramedics and specialist | :03:19. | :03:19.
responders, as well as an advance trauma team from London's Air | :03:20. | :03:22.
The Metropolitan Police say the driver of the van - | :03:23. | :03:25.
a 48-year-old man - has been arrested. | :03:26. | :03:27.
The Seven Sisters Road just after Mel -- midnight. | :03:28. | :03:37.
This footage was recorded moments after a van mounted the pavement | :03:38. | :03:40.
The streets have been filled with worshippers who just left | :03:41. | :03:44.
evening prayers at the Finsbury Park mosque and the nearby Muslim Welfare | :03:45. | :03:47.
He looked straight, he looked straight like it was towards | :03:48. | :03:50.
He basically drove on the pavement, coming straight towards all | :03:51. | :03:56.
the Muslims, and as he was coming to them, he hit all of them. | :03:57. | :04:00.
Within hours, the Muslim Council of Britain claimed the van | :04:01. | :04:03.
was intentionally driven at worshippers. | :04:04. | :04:06.
Police say the driver, a 48-year-old man, was found | :04:07. | :04:08.
by members of the public and handed over to officers to be arrested. | :04:09. | :04:13.
He has since been taken to hospital as a precaution. | :04:14. | :04:16.
And I saw a large crowd of people on the pavement. | :04:17. | :04:24.
I learned after that a van that was standing up by the traffic | :04:25. | :04:27.
lights was the van that mowed the people down. | :04:28. | :04:30.
Several ambulances were on the scene soon afterwards with trauma teams | :04:31. | :04:33.
In the early hours of the morning, Downing Street issued a statement | :04:34. | :04:40.
from Theresa May, saying her thoughts are with all | :04:41. | :04:46.
The Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, who is also a local MP, | :04:47. | :04:51.
said he was totally shocked and had been in touch with mosques | :04:52. | :04:54.
in the area as well as Islington Council. | :04:55. | :04:56.
This morning, the scene remained sealed off as counter-terrorism | :04:57. | :04:58.
officers, for the third time in as many months, | :04:59. | :05:01.
investigated a vehicle being driven into people on London streets | :05:02. | :05:06.
This is the scene above the scene now. A large police cordon. We will | :05:07. | :05:37.
be able to speak to some eyewitnesses and some who were | :05:38. | :05:44.
inside the mosque. One man we will hopefully be speaking to later on | :05:45. | :05:48.
with a man holding down the man who was taken by police. We understand | :05:49. | :05:53.
the van driver was held down by people at the scene, some who are in | :05:54. | :05:58.
hospital. They had to wait several minutes for the police to arrive. We | :05:59. | :06:04.
will be speaking to London's mayor Sadiq Khan as well. | :06:05. | :06:06.
Breakfast's Graham Satchell is in Finsbury Park | :06:07. | :06:08.
Graham, what's the scene like there at the moment? | :06:09. | :06:16.
We are at the police cordon on Seven Sisters Road. This part of London is | :06:17. | :06:25.
near Arsenal's Park. There is a terrible sense of deja vu this | :06:26. | :06:34.
morning. Somebody has driven a vehicle, it looks deliberately, into | :06:35. | :06:37.
a group of pedestrians. A big difference this time is that what we | :06:38. | :06:42.
know is that this was a white man driving a white man who targeted a | :06:43. | :06:48.
group of Muslim worshippers -- van. Think they were at the Muslim | :06:49. | :06:55.
Welfare House and the Finsbury Park mosque. I have with me and man who | :06:56. | :07:02.
was at the scene. Can you tell us what happened? Basically, we came | :07:03. | :07:09.
out of the press. It was a calm, peaceful environment and people were | :07:10. | :07:12.
running around screaming and there was chaos because people had been | :07:13. | :07:20.
run over by a white man. He was dragged out of his car and pinned | :07:21. | :07:24.
down and people were screaming to find the police. The two other | :07:25. | :07:28.
attackers had got away. So there were three people in the van? Leigh | :07:29. | :07:33.
a lot of people confirmed this. Two of the attackers got away. --A lot | :07:34. | :07:40.
of people confirmed this. The police took an hour to come. I do know why | :07:41. | :07:45.
they took an owl. There was a six minute response time. Both of the | :07:46. | :07:54.
attackers were shot by police. The ambulance response time was within | :07:55. | :07:58.
five when it. Today, it was 45 minutes. I want to know why. As | :07:59. | :08:04.
Muslims, we don't all save. I have brothers, mothers and sisters. We go | :08:05. | :08:10.
out, we make sure we are vigilant and safe. As Muslims, growing up in | :08:11. | :08:16.
the UK, we don't feel safe practising our religion. Why is it | :08:17. | :08:19.
like that? The question was asked in the media, what can be done and what | :08:20. | :08:25.
can be done by the government for us to feel safe and the truth is | :08:26. | :08:29.
nothing. If a man wants to go and commit a violent offence, he can do | :08:30. | :08:33.
it and nothing can be doing about it. Nothing at all. This man was at | :08:34. | :08:41.
the scene overnight, confirming what we have seen from a number of | :08:42. | :08:44.
eyewitnesses. People who were standing around who detained the | :08:45. | :08:48.
driver of this vehicle who we now believe to be a 48-year-old man who | :08:49. | :08:55.
has taken to hospital. He will be questioned once released a hospital | :08:56. | :08:58.
and taken into custody. Its interesting how the story developed | :08:59. | :09:03.
overnight. Rees describes this as a major incident and they are now | :09:04. | :09:07.
saying the counterterrorism branch of police who are investigating | :09:08. | :09:11.
this. Theresa May have described it as a potential terrorist attack and | :09:12. | :09:14.
it seems, from everything we are hearing on the ground, that that is | :09:15. | :09:16.
exactly what this is. Back to you. If you are just turning on your | :09:17. | :09:25.
television. Just to remind you, as Graham was saying, as suspected | :09:26. | :09:28.
terrorist attack which has taken place in Finsbury Park overnight. | :09:29. | :09:31.
One man has died and eight people have been injured. The Prime | :09:32. | :09:35.
Minister says police are treating this incident as a potential | :09:36. | :09:39.
terrorist attack. The Metropolitan police are describing it as a major | :09:40. | :09:45.
incident and 14080 wild man has been arrested. -- and one 48-year-old man | :09:46. | :09:58.
has been arrested. Sadiq Khan is talking about an attack on common | :09:59. | :10:02.
values. Like the other attacks in England, it is also an assault on | :10:03. | :10:07.
our shared values of tolerance, read and respect. He has also mentioned | :10:08. | :10:10.
they would be extra police to reassure communities and making a | :10:11. | :10:15.
point there will be especially those observing Ramadan. We will speak to | :10:16. | :10:19.
the London mayor later here on BBC breakfast. This response from Jeremy | :10:20. | :10:24.
Corbyn this morning as well. "I Am totally shocked at the incident in | :10:25. | :10:27.
Finsbury Park this morning. I have been in touch with the mosques, the | :10:28. | :10:31.
police and Islington Council regarding the incident. I thought | :10:32. | :10:34.
with those and the community affected by what he calls a terrible | :10:35. | :10:42.
event. We will be speaking to eyewitnesses as well from the scene | :10:43. | :10:45.
and it will all be coming up little bit later. | :10:46. | :10:46.
The first formal Brexit negotiations are due to begin in Brussels today. | :10:47. | :10:49.
The Brexit Secretary, David Davis, will meet the EU's Chief Negotiator, | :10:50. | :10:52.
Michel Barnier - with the hope of building what he calls a "new, | :10:53. | :10:56.
deep and special partnership" with the organisation. | :10:57. | :10:58.
The status of expats, the Northern Ireland border | :10:59. | :11:00.
and the UK's so-called divorce bill are all up for discussion. | :11:01. | :11:03.
Our Europe correspondent, Kevin Connolly, has more. | :11:04. | :11:11.
David Davis will lead Britain's negotiators into historic talks of | :11:12. | :11:19.
immense scope and complexity. European laws and rules have | :11:20. | :11:23.
regulated everything from fishing quotas to football transfers. The | :11:24. | :11:27.
British team will have two, a huge amount of ground. Facing them across | :11:28. | :11:32.
the table will be this man. Former French minister and chief EU | :11:33. | :11:37.
negotiator Michelle Barnier. He says this is not about cutting a deal | :11:38. | :11:42.
designed to put other member states of the idea of leaving but he is | :11:43. | :11:51.
expected to be tough. It is 44 years since the UK joined the European | :11:52. | :11:55.
Community. Almost exactly one year since it voted to leave. His | :11:56. | :12:00.
departure will leave a substantial hole in the EU budget. For that | :12:01. | :12:07.
reason, EU officials say at financial settlement from the UK | :12:08. | :12:11.
along with the distance' writes and the Irish border will have to be | :12:12. | :12:17.
negotiated for -- first. -- rights. Only then will the attention be | :12:18. | :12:21.
drawn to a future trade deal. Our political reporter | :12:22. | :12:26.
Adam Fleming is in Brussels. This is just the start of the | :12:27. | :12:33.
negotiations. Adam, what exactly will the two | :12:34. | :12:38.
sides be hoping to achieve now? David Davis is coming not with all | :12:39. | :12:47.
guns blazing. He is talking about forging a deep and special | :12:48. | :12:53.
relationship between the EU and the UK like no other deal in history. He | :12:54. | :12:59.
is not coming here to pick a fight. The in terms of the shape of the | :13:00. | :13:04.
day, he will get here in a couple of hours and meet Michelle Barnier. He | :13:05. | :13:15.
will be looking into having a working lunch and then the teams | :13:16. | :13:19.
will break into smaller groups to discuss the three main priority | :13:20. | :13:22.
issues that the EU have identified for these early stages. Sorting out | :13:23. | :13:30.
the issue of rights for EU nationals living in the UK and vice-versa. The | :13:31. | :13:35.
thorny issue of the Brexit Bill, how much money does the UK oh that | :13:36. | :13:46.
people here in Brussels -- owe. A long, long way to go. The | :13:47. | :13:51.
significance of today is its just started rather than any of the | :13:52. | :13:53.
details that will emerge. One-minute silence will be held | :13:54. | :14:22.
today for the Grenfell Tower disaster. | :14:23. | :14:23.
Hundreds of firefighters are still tackling a huge forest | :14:24. | :14:26.
fire in a hilly region of central Portugal which has already killed | :14:27. | :14:29.
It's believed that a lightning strike started the fire | :14:30. | :14:33.
in the Pedrogao Grande area on Saturday morning. | :14:34. | :14:35.
Many of the dead perished in their cars as they tried to flee. | :14:36. | :14:41.
President Macron's Republique En Marche party has won a large | :14:42. | :14:43.
Projections indicate it could take up to 360 | :14:44. | :14:47.
Marine Le Pen of the far-right Front National has won a seat | :14:48. | :14:51.
for the first time, while the Socialists are forecast | :14:52. | :14:54.
We will focus on Finsbury Park and what happened last night. That is | :14:55. | :15:22.
the major story this morning. We will remind you what we know. | :15:23. | :15:28.
One man has died and eight people have been injured after a fan | :15:29. | :15:41.
intentionally swerved in a mosque in north London. | :15:42. | :15:50.
He met police are calling it a major incident. | :15:51. | :15:54.
We are hearing from eyewitnesses on the ground that they tackled this | :15:55. | :16:03.
man and they held him while waiting for the police to arrive. This is | :16:04. | :16:10.
the live scene from Finsbury Park, which is obviously an ongoing | :16:11. | :16:16.
investigation. A large area is cordoned off. The Chief Executive of | :16:17. | :16:26.
the Ramadan Organisation joins us now. We know some of what happened, | :16:27. | :16:31.
but not exact details. People are saying the worshippers were | :16:32. | :16:34.
deliberately targeted. What do you know? I witnessed on the ground I | :16:35. | :16:41.
have spoken to say the vehicle deliberately swerved towards | :16:42. | :16:47.
worshippers. We know it is registered, a hire van from done -- | :16:48. | :16:58.
outside of London. We should not hesitate to call it what it is. | :16:59. | :17:07.
These far right extremists will not succeed in dividing communities. | :17:08. | :17:11.
What was your personal response when you had what happened? First of all, | :17:12. | :17:21.
here we go again. Enough is enough. We have suffered enough. Human life | :17:22. | :17:28.
is sacred. Whatever its background. We must all come together and reject | :17:29. | :17:32.
violence and hatred. I want to call out some of the commentators and | :17:33. | :17:36.
media personalities perpetuating hatred towards Islam and Muslims, | :17:37. | :17:43.
they are allowing an environment to exist where these people carry out | :17:44. | :17:50.
these attacks. This morning, we have heard it is an assault on all shared | :17:51. | :17:56.
values of tolerance and freedom and self-respect. That is something to | :17:57. | :18:00.
remember at this time. Yes. Ramadan is a month of rare and coming | :18:01. | :18:08.
together as a community. -- prayer. We saw a last week with the Grenfell | :18:09. | :18:16.
Tower event last week. People coming together to help. We have to reject | :18:17. | :18:23.
violence absolutely from whichever section of society we find it. The | :18:24. | :18:28.
Prime Minister has called this a potential terrorist attack. We have | :18:29. | :18:31.
a statement from Jeremy Corbyn as well. What response do you want from | :18:32. | :18:36.
authorities? The response we have seen already from the Prime Minister | :18:37. | :18:39.
is very good. A global meeting is ongoing. People are concerned in | :18:40. | :18:46.
mosques across the country. In the evening, many go to them. We have a | :18:47. | :18:54.
heightened security alert. There will be additional security in | :18:55. | :19:00.
mosques. It is a term rack attack carried out by white extremists | :19:01. | :19:06.
against Muslims. Yeah, we do not know the identity of the man | :19:07. | :19:10.
involved. Though, we do know some of what he was saying. Would you | :19:11. | :19:21.
welcome more security during this month? Yes. I have spoken to | :19:22. | :19:25.
Metropolitan Police this morning and that security will be given across | :19:26. | :19:28.
the country. It is important people feel safe while praying. It has been | :19:29. | :19:38.
a period of weeks of really distressing news. Would you appeal | :19:39. | :19:41.
for calm? Yes. Everyone should remain calm and allow the police to | :19:42. | :19:48.
carry out the investigation. They will get to the bottom of it. We | :19:49. | :19:52.
will not give in. People should stay united. We are hearing from | :19:53. | :20:01.
eyewitnesses this morning. Do you think there was fear in the Muslim | :20:02. | :20:09.
community about rough -- reprisals? There were threats made against | :20:10. | :20:15.
mosques. It has been difficult. In the end, you cannot stop and | :20:16. | :20:23.
protect, you know, a mosque, a community, with this. Thank you. You | :20:24. | :20:28.
will be here later. Thank you for the moment. As always, we will catch | :20:29. | :20:36.
up with the weather. It has been really warm. The details. It | :20:37. | :20:41.
certainly has. Yesterday was the warmest day of the year so far. | :20:42. | :20:49.
Today, what we're looking at is a start. 20 degrees already in London. | :20:50. | :20:57.
Yesterday, we reached 32.1 degrees Celsius in the London area. Today, | :20:58. | :21:02.
we could hit 33. High temperatures generally, except in the north of | :21:03. | :21:06.
Scotland where we have a weather front producing more cloud, patchy | :21:07. | :21:10.
light rain, and also, as a result, temperatures are a bit lower. This | :21:11. | :21:14.
morning we have a combination stretching from the Outer Hebrides | :21:15. | :21:18.
towards the western isles. Towards the south, heavy rain first thing. | :21:19. | :21:27.
Behind this, a bit of cloud, bright spells in Edinburgh, up to 20 | :21:28. | :21:33.
degrees. This afternoon in southern Scotland, northern England, and | :21:34. | :21:36.
Northern Ireland, heavy and sharp showers which could be thundery. Dry | :21:37. | :21:40.
weather to start the day in England and Wales. Sunshine from the word | :21:41. | :21:44.
go. Temperatures rapidly rising. One or two showers in eastern and | :21:45. | :21:49.
central England. Fairly well isolated, but if you catch one, the | :21:50. | :21:53.
potential to be thundery. Most will mist them. South-west England, 29. | :21:54. | :22:01.
London, 33. Wales, 32 degrees. Northern Ireland, the risk of | :22:02. | :22:07.
showers. Many staying dry. The temperatures are a little bit lower. | :22:08. | :22:10.
Through the evening and overnight, we lose the risk of showers. | :22:11. | :22:15.
Especially thundery winds. More cloud in the east of England. Are | :22:16. | :22:20.
lots of dry weather around as well. Another sultry night in prospect for | :22:21. | :22:25.
many parts of England and Wales. Fresh conditions across Scotland and | :22:26. | :22:27.
Northern Ireland and eventually northern England as a weather front | :22:28. | :22:33.
goes south producing cloud. Somewhere like Hull tomorrow could | :22:34. | :22:37.
be 10 degrees lower than today. Today we could see perhaps 29- 30 - | :22:38. | :22:43.
31. Tomorrow could be 10 degrees lower. The heat will transfer | :22:44. | :22:47.
towards the south-west. Bristol could have a high of 31. | :22:48. | :22:54.
Temperature-wise, moving northwards, behind the weather front, we start | :22:55. | :22:58.
to see fresh conditions coming in. As we move from Tuesday into | :22:59. | :23:02.
Wednesday, we hang on to the heat, especially in the south of the | :23:03. | :23:06.
country. A fair bit of sunshine around as well. Weather fronts | :23:07. | :23:12.
coming in across the north that are going to introduce some rain. In | :23:13. | :23:16.
terms of the temperature, it is unusual to see such high | :23:17. | :23:21.
temperatures into the 30s on the charts, not just in London, but | :23:22. | :23:26.
other parts in the country. Thank you. We will see you in half an | :23:27. | :23:32.
hour. Thank you for being with us. The top story. The attack close to | :23:33. | :23:41.
Finsbury Park Mosque. We can hear from two people close to it when it | :23:42. | :23:47.
happened. I saw people on the floor, right and left. It was literally | :23:48. | :23:53.
chaos. As he hit the curb, one ran out and police can click -- came | :23:54. | :24:04.
quick. Thank God. He was on the run and they caught him. But a lot of | :24:05. | :24:11.
people got hurt. It looked basically like it was towards Muslims. He | :24:12. | :24:18.
basically drove on the pavement. As he was coming to them, he hit all of | :24:19. | :24:23.
them, and I think one of them died. Straightaway. One of them died | :24:24. | :24:29.
straightaway. The rest are in bad condition. How many people do you | :24:30. | :24:36.
see on the floor? 7-8. That were seriously injured? Seriously | :24:37. | :24:40.
injured. As the police came, they moved all of us quickly. They kept | :24:41. | :24:49.
it under control. I asked the police if there was a man going free and | :24:50. | :24:55.
they were not telling us. We were like is this a terrorist attack was | :24:56. | :24:59.
white what did you see? The doors were open. I came from behind and | :25:00. | :25:11.
said what is going on? Then I am on my phone. We thought it was a normal | :25:12. | :25:18.
accident. Then we saw all the people on the floor. That is a terrorist | :25:19. | :25:25.
attack. Khalid was at the scene. Many different eyewitness reports | :25:26. | :25:32.
coming in. He described the moment pedestrians were hit. The van | :25:33. | :25:39.
literally turned left with no indication. And then it just hit the | :25:40. | :25:43.
people. One of them was under the van. People gathered around the van | :25:44. | :25:50.
to lift it up and get the guy out. The dying jumped on it and two | :25:51. | :25:58.
literally ran. Not a lot of people were coming out, but as soon as it | :25:59. | :26:02.
happened, people were shouting and gathered around. Two ran, one | :26:03. | :26:08.
arrested. The people surrounded him and apprehended him. He was | :26:09. | :26:21.
shouting, "I want to kill all Muslims." Literally like that. Word | :26:22. | :26:24.
for word. This is a terrorist attack whether he a Muslim, whether he is | :26:25. | :26:32.
not, it is. I don't want to see tomorrow that he has mental issues. | :26:33. | :26:40.
This is categorised as a terrorist, Christian or Muslim. No religion | :26:41. | :26:47.
belongs to terrorism. Terrorism has no religion. Anyone who hurts or | :26:48. | :26:57.
harms or kills people, this is terrorism. That was an eyewitness. | :26:58. | :27:00.
Just to remind you, I know many people are joining us for the first | :27:01. | :27:04.
time this morning, we are talking about an incident taking place | :27:05. | :27:10.
outside a mosque in Finsbury Park. A van was driven into a group of | :27:11. | :27:14.
people as they were leaving the mosque. One man has died and eight | :27:15. | :27:23.
have been injured. The Prime Minister has called it a potential | :27:24. | :27:26.
terrorist attack. We have had a quote from Sadiq Khan. We will speak | :27:27. | :27:32.
to the mayor a little bit later. He says we do not yet know the complete | :27:33. | :27:36.
details but this was clearly an attack on innocent Londoners. He | :27:37. | :27:41.
says while this seems to be an attack on a particular community, | :27:42. | :27:46.
like the terrible attacks in Manchester, Westminster, and London | :27:47. | :27:49.
Bridge, it is also an assault on all of our shared values of tolerance, | :27:50. | :27:55.
freedom, and respect. He goes on to say that the situation is still | :27:56. | :27:58.
unfolding and he all Londoners to remain calm and vigilant. -- urges | :27:59. | :28:07.
all. A 48-year-old man has been arrested in relation to the | :28:08. | :28:09.
incident. Just before we go, these are live | :28:10. | :31:31.
pictures of Finsbury Park. Will ease investigations are ongoing. There is | :31:32. | :31:35.
much more on Breakfast and the radio station. I will be back with the | :31:36. | :31:37.
latest in half an hour. One man has been killed and eight | :31:38. | :31:42.
people have been taken to three separate hospitals after a van drove | :31:43. | :31:47.
into a crowd of pedestrians Theresa May has said police | :31:48. | :31:50.
are treating the incident near Finsbury Park "as a potential | :31:51. | :31:54.
terrorist attack" and counter The Prime Minister has also | :31:55. | :31:57.
confirmed she will be chairing a meeting of the cabinet's emergency | :31:58. | :32:07.
Cobra Committee later this morning. Officers have cordoned | :32:08. | :32:10.
off a large area close Many of the victims are believed | :32:11. | :32:12.
to have just left evening prayers, Police first received calls | :32:13. | :32:20.
at around twenty past midnight of reports that a vehicle had | :32:21. | :32:26.
collided with pedestrians. Emergency services treated a number | :32:27. | :32:28.
of casualties at the scene. The London Ambulance Service | :32:29. | :32:40.
deployed sixty medics to the scene - including ambulance crews, | :32:41. | :32:43.
advance paramedics and specialist responders, as well as an advance | :32:44. | :32:45.
trauma team from London's Air The Metropolitan Police say | :32:46. | :32:48.
the driver of the van - a 48-year-old man - | :32:49. | :32:51.
has been arrested. The Seven Sisters Road | :32:52. | :32:53.
in North London just after midnight. This footage filmed by an eyewitness | :32:54. | :33:01.
was recorded moments after a van mounted the pavement and struck | :33:02. | :33:04.
several pedestrians. The streets have been filled | :33:05. | :33:07.
with worshippers who just left evening prayers at the Finsbury Park | :33:08. | :33:09.
mosque and the nearby Muslim Welfare He looked straight, he looked | :33:10. | :33:12.
straight like it was towards He basically drove on the pavement, | :33:13. | :33:18.
coming straight towards all the Muslims, and as he was coming | :33:19. | :33:26.
to them, he hit all of them. Within hours, the Muslim Council | :33:27. | :33:30.
of Britain claimed the van was intentionally | :33:31. | :33:33.
driven at worshippers. Police say the driver, | :33:34. | :33:34.
a 48-year-old man, was found by members of the public and handed | :33:35. | :33:36.
over to officers to be arrested. He has since been taken | :33:37. | :33:40.
to hospital as a precaution. And I saw a large crowd | :33:41. | :33:46.
of people on the pavement. I learned after that a van | :33:47. | :33:54.
that was standing up by the traffic lights was the van that | :33:55. | :33:58.
mowed the people down. Several ambulances were on the scene | :33:59. | :34:00.
soon afterwards with trauma teams In the early hours of the morning, | :34:01. | :34:03.
Downing Street issued a statement from Theresa May, saying her | :34:04. | :34:11.
thoughts were with all The Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, | :34:12. | :34:13.
who is also a local MP, said he was totally shocked and had | :34:14. | :34:17.
been in touch with mosques in the area as well | :34:18. | :34:20.
as Islington Council. This morning, the scene remained | :34:21. | :34:22.
sealed off as counter-terrorism officers, for the third | :34:23. | :34:25.
time in as many months, investigate a vehicle being driven | :34:26. | :34:27.
into people on London streets Breakfast's Graham Satchell | :34:28. | :34:30.
is in Finsbury Park Graham, what's the scene | :34:31. | :34:44.
like there at the moment? Is not entirely clear what happened. | :34:45. | :35:02.
This story has developed quite a lot overnight. Initially, police | :35:03. | :35:07.
described it as a major incident. I think now it has become clearer that | :35:08. | :35:11.
once again we are standing at a police cordoned at an attack on | :35:12. | :35:22.
innocent civilians. Interesting, it is the counterterrorism branch of | :35:23. | :35:26.
police who are investigating this and the Prime Minister Theresa May | :35:27. | :35:30.
also describing it as a potential terror attack. There is no doubt | :35:31. | :35:33.
among people on the grounds that that is exactly what this is. They | :35:34. | :35:37.
are describing it as an act of terrorism. The ground that that is | :35:38. | :35:50.
exactly what this is. They are describing it as an act of | :35:51. | :35:55.
terrorism. I am seeing that the white van has come and is crashing | :35:56. | :36:00.
into people. People are on the floor, the people that they are | :36:01. | :36:06.
trying to help. The people that are on the floor, it is pandemonium. | :36:07. | :36:11.
People screaming, crying. Did it seem like deliberate attacks? 100%. | :36:12. | :36:19.
No doubt this is an attack on the Muslim community. The individual was | :36:20. | :36:23.
there waiting and he ploughed down the Muslims. After he did his | :36:24. | :36:27.
attack, the police arrested him and he was gloating. He was laughing and | :36:28. | :36:33.
the police arrested him and I'm just thinking, like, what kind of | :36:34. | :36:40.
individual is that. There has been an increase in Islamaphobia in | :36:41. | :36:44.
recent weeks and months. Is that what it feels like to you at the | :36:45. | :36:49.
moment? 100%. I would not disagree with that comment. In fact, there | :36:50. | :36:52.
was actually another assault upon Muslims in the mosque, an acid | :36:53. | :36:59.
attack not too far from here. For me, I don't disagree with that | :37:00. | :37:07.
comment. Extreme Islamaphobia has risen and it impacting the Muslim | :37:08. | :37:13.
community in a major way. Thank you very much indeed. Just to bring you | :37:14. | :37:22.
up to date, we know now that one man has died here at the scene. Eight | :37:23. | :37:28.
people have been injured taken to three separate hospitals and a | :37:29. | :37:32.
48-year-old white man who was driving a white van has been taken | :37:33. | :37:37.
to hospital and they say once he is discharge from hospital he will be | :37:38. | :37:40.
taken into custody and then questioned. We know you will be back | :37:41. | :37:45.
throughout the morning. We have just woken to police in the last few | :37:46. | :37:48.
minutes because there has been questions about police response | :37:49. | :37:49.
time. The police said they responded to | :37:50. | :37:58.
the attack within ten minutes. There have also been questions. | :37:59. | :38:00.
Eyewitnesses talking about perhaps there being more than one person in | :38:01. | :38:06.
this van but police are saying at this point they are not looking at | :38:07. | :38:10.
other people who were in the van at this point. They responded to the | :38:11. | :38:17.
attack on worshippers within ten minutes. The police say that within | :38:18. | :38:23.
this early stage, no other suspects at the scene have been identified or | :38:24. | :38:28.
reported to police but they also say the investigation continues. | :38:29. | :38:32.
Abdirahim Saeed works for our colleagues at the BBC | :38:33. | :38:34.
World Service and arrived on the scene shortly | :38:35. | :38:37.
Good morning to you. And she for coming in this morning. Can you | :38:38. | :38:47.
describe where you were and what happened? Well, I was driving from | :38:48. | :38:54.
central London into North London, the area where the incident | :38:55. | :39:01.
happened. If a few stops away from where I live. I assumed I arrived | :39:02. | :39:08.
with the second wave of police vans and ambulances arriving. As I was | :39:09. | :39:12.
coming down the Seven Sisters Road, I saw a huge number of police vans | :39:13. | :39:20.
with sirens. I arrived a few seconds later, looked to my left into what | :39:21. | :39:26.
was another street and I saw a huge number of people that had arrived | :39:27. | :39:31.
and it was a second wave of ambulance services arriving. We saw | :39:32. | :39:37.
a few police officers. There was no blocking off yet so I could get | :39:38. | :39:41.
close. Two bodies I saw on the ground lying still. I couldn't tell | :39:42. | :39:46.
whether they were still alive or dead. People I spoke to who were | :39:47. | :39:53.
there, they told me there was at least six other bodies I couldn't | :39:54. | :40:00.
see. Was there a van bear? There may have been a group of people outside | :40:01. | :40:09.
the mosque. -- was there a van there? The van was driven into a | :40:10. | :40:15.
group of people? Ace poacher eyewitnesses and ask what did they | :40:16. | :40:19.
exactly see. One turned around and pointed a white van and neither | :40:20. | :40:26.
bodies and they said a man was there. They described him as a white | :40:27. | :40:33.
man who had driven the car at the eyewitnesses said it was a | :40:34. | :40:37.
deliberate attack. The location of the mosque was not exactly, it was | :40:38. | :40:43.
another one a few seconds away. There is a cafe fare. People were | :40:44. | :40:50.
milling around. -- there is a cafe and Samak. People were in the middle | :40:51. | :41:00.
of their brand. People were gathered. A man said there was a | :41:01. | :41:12.
white van. There is a bit of confusion. Some said they ran away. | :41:13. | :41:21.
Pity he what was saying earlier that police issued an -- did you hear | :41:22. | :41:28.
what we said earlier that the police are not looking for anybody else at | :41:29. | :41:33.
the moment? I will also ask you about another eyewitness saying the | :41:34. | :41:38.
man has been arrested, the 48-year-old man, was held by people | :41:39. | :41:42.
at the scene until police arrived. You see any of that? I didn't see | :41:43. | :41:49.
any of that. I arrived after that when people told me they saw what | :41:50. | :41:56.
happened is about the apprehended by the locals. He was held to the | :41:57. | :42:02.
ground and handed to the police and they described what they saw as him | :42:03. | :42:19.
smiling and raising his hand in triumph. It will who were there told | :42:20. | :42:24.
me they have no doubt that this was to let Brett attack on Muslims. -- | :42:25. | :42:36.
deliberate. They thought people were congregating outside the mosque but | :42:37. | :42:40.
it was the local cafe which is a few seconds away. | :42:41. | :42:46.
Thank you for bringing us what you saw. We can't entirely tidy things | :42:47. | :43:00.
up but there are a number of reports saying there was a number of | :43:01. | :43:05.
suspects at the scene. From what we hear from police, no other suspects | :43:06. | :43:09.
from the scene have been a dentist right. They have arrested one 40 | :43:10. | :43:19.
eight-year-old man. -- no other suspects from the scene. One person | :43:20. | :43:31.
has died, eight injured and eyewitnesses are talking about | :43:32. | :43:34.
police response time. We have spoken to police and they responded to | :43:35. | :43:40.
calls within ten minutes. Also confirming they are not looking for | :43:41. | :43:44.
any other suspects is seen. As we have the Prime Minister will be | :43:45. | :43:49.
chairing a meeting on Cobra this morning. | :43:50. | :44:02.
It is with grim frequency that the Prime Minister will be attending an | :44:03. | :44:13.
emergency briefing after an overnight tragedy. I have spoken to | :44:14. | :44:17.
Downing Street in the last couple of minutes confirming the Prime | :44:18. | :44:22.
Minister is can describing this as a potential terrorist attack and she | :44:23. | :44:24.
will chair an emergency meeting later this morning. Her thoughts are | :44:25. | :44:29.
with the victims, their families and emergency services at the scene. | :44:30. | :44:33.
Overnight tonight, we have also heard from Jeremy Corbyn, the Labour | :44:34. | :44:38.
leader. Not just the Labour leader in this incident but also their | :44:39. | :44:43.
local MP of Islington in the area. He is totally shocked and has been | :44:44. | :44:46.
in touch with the mosques in the area. His thoughts with those in the | :44:47. | :44:51.
community affected by this awful event. A much longer post from the | :44:52. | :44:55.
Mayor of London Sadiq Khan on face within the last hour, saying the | :44:56. | :45:00.
Metropolitan police are responding to what he describes as a horrific | :45:01. | :45:03.
terrorist attack on innocent people at Finsbury Park. He adds that while | :45:04. | :45:09.
this is an attack on a particular community like the attacks on | :45:10. | :45:14.
Manchester, Westminster and London Bridge, it is also an assault on our | :45:15. | :45:17.
share of values, tolerance, freedom and respect. Saying that once you | :45:18. | :45:22.
don't know the full details, this was clearly a deliberate attack on | :45:23. | :45:27.
innocent Londoners many of whom were finishing press during the holy | :45:28. | :45:28.
month of Ramadan. We understand from Sadiq Khan that | :45:29. | :45:39.
the Metropolitan Police will be deploying more police to reassure | :45:40. | :45:43.
communities. The mood was already sombre juju Grenfell Tower last | :45:44. | :45:50.
week. -- due to. A sombre mood in the capital. A stretch in time for | :45:51. | :45:55.
the Metropolitan Police given what we have seen with the terrorist | :45:56. | :46:01.
attacks in the past two months. We know about that from what we are | :46:02. | :46:04.
told from the intelligence agencies, the scale of the challenges they are | :46:05. | :46:10.
facing up to. There are huge deployments from the police, fire, | :46:11. | :46:16.
and ambulance services. Especially after last week with the burning | :46:17. | :46:23.
tower. And now Finsbury Park this morning. There is a desire in the | :46:24. | :46:27.
police, frequently seen this, they want to increase visibility on the | :46:28. | :46:33.
street in order to reassure people. That comes as a hugely logistical | :46:34. | :46:36.
problem for the Metropolitan Police, though. Thank you. We will speak to | :46:37. | :46:43.
you later. We will bring you up-to-date is done that incident in | :46:44. | :46:46.
Finsbury Park through Breakfast this morning. Just a reminder. One man | :46:47. | :46:52.
has died and eight have been injured after a van ploughed into people | :46:53. | :46:58.
outside of a mosque in north London. One 48-year-old man has been | :46:59. | :47:06.
arrested. It appears that the incident happened and people | :47:07. | :47:09.
involved in the incident managed to get hold of the driver and | :47:10. | :47:12.
essentially hold onto him until police arrived. Police arrived on | :47:13. | :47:18.
the scene after receiving 999 calls within ten minutes. This man, a man, | :47:19. | :47:23.
was arrested at the scene where this happened. Many victims had left | :47:24. | :47:31.
evening prayers, breaking their Ramadan fast early on. There has | :47:32. | :47:40.
been a call for increased security around mosques. Sadiq Khan said this | :47:41. | :47:45.
morning the Metropolitan Police have already deployed extra police to | :47:46. | :47:51.
these areas. We will speak to eyewitnesses and the London Mayor | :47:52. | :47:56.
later, keeping you up-to-date with all of the latest. I am afraid it is | :47:57. | :48:00.
another morning where we bring you terrible news. But we also have the | :48:01. | :48:05.
weather. Good morning. If you are stepping out and have allergies with | :48:06. | :48:12.
grass and pollen, the levels are high across the UK today. The | :48:13. | :48:15.
exception is in the far north of Scotland. Another hot and sunny day | :48:16. | :48:20.
for most of us as well. Yesterday was the warmest day of the year so | :48:21. | :48:24.
far. The temperature in Greater London was 32.1 Celsius. Yesterday, | :48:25. | :48:30.
we had high values over many parts of the UK. The exception being the | :48:31. | :48:34.
far north of Scotland where we had and still do have a weather front | :48:35. | :48:39.
producing more cloud, some spots of rain, and as a result, it has held | :48:40. | :48:43.
back the temperature. That is the scenario this morning. We still have | :48:44. | :48:47.
a weather front in the north and western isles. Producing rain. It | :48:48. | :48:53.
will weaken through the date copy a lot of dry and a lot of sunny | :48:54. | :49:00.
weather. -- through the day. England and Wales, hovering around 25 | :49:01. | :49:10.
degrees. Fresher in Scotland. Sharp showers in southern Scotland and | :49:11. | :49:14.
northern England. If you catch one, it could be thundery. Many of us | :49:15. | :49:18.
will mist them. Sharp showers in central part of England. | :49:19. | :49:23.
Temperatures warmer than the south-east today, 33 degrees. That | :49:24. | :49:30.
will be the warmest day of the year if it happens. 22 in Wales. High UV | :49:31. | :49:38.
levels. Northern Ireland, you could see the odd shower this afternoon. | :49:39. | :49:42.
Many of us will not get them. Temperature is not as high either. | :49:43. | :49:46.
Through the evening, we tend to lose the risk of thunder. Through the | :49:47. | :49:51.
night, we get more cloud from the North Sea coming up for eastern | :49:52. | :49:55.
counties. Dry weather around the night. A muggy one in Cardiff. 21 | :49:56. | :50:05.
degrees. Fresh in northern England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, as | :50:06. | :50:08.
the weather front goes out. Tomorrow, cloud associated with the | :50:09. | :50:13.
weather front again coming in off the North Sea. Somewhere like Hull | :50:14. | :50:23.
or around The Wash generally, 10 degrees lower than today. 31 around | :50:24. | :50:30.
these areas today. Tomorrow, 20- 21. A high risk of showers in the | :50:31. | :50:34.
south-west tomorrow. There could be thundery as well. A lot of dry | :50:35. | :50:38.
weather across the far north of Scotland. As we head into Tuesday | :50:39. | :50:46.
evening, we lose those showers. Wednesday itself, rain coming in | :50:47. | :50:50.
from the west. Once again, the heat starts to build, and will warm up. | :50:51. | :50:57.
Thank you for that. Plenty more weather coming up later on. It | :50:58. | :51:03.
really has been a hot weekend. Mostly on the programme this morning | :51:04. | :51:07.
we are covering the news overnight that one person has been killed and | :51:08. | :51:11.
eight it will injured after a van appears to have driven deliberately | :51:12. | :51:16.
in the worshippers at Finsbury Park. I will read you a statement from the | :51:17. | :51:20.
police who said they were on the scene within ten minutes of 999 | :51:21. | :51:26.
calls, at 20 past midnight last night. They had reports of a van | :51:27. | :51:33.
colliding with pedestrians. They found and tended to a number of | :51:34. | :51:37.
casualties. One man was announced dead at the scene. They are | :51:38. | :51:41.
informing next of kin. Eight injured were taken to three separate | :51:42. | :51:46.
hospitals. Two people were treated at the scene for minor injuries. | :51:47. | :51:51.
From what we know so far, a van mounted the pavement and struck a | :51:52. | :51:55.
number of people just after midnight in Finsbury Park. A 48-year-old man | :51:56. | :52:01.
has been arrested. We have heard a statement from Sadiq Khan, who we | :52:02. | :52:08.
will speak to later. And also Theresa May, she has said they are | :52:09. | :52:12.
treating it as a potential terror attack. There will be a meeting of | :52:13. | :52:16.
the Cobra committee, which seems like a regular occurrence now. We | :52:17. | :52:22.
have heard this confirmed by eyewitnesses, this man arrested was | :52:23. | :52:25.
found and detained by members of the public at the seams to be one of | :52:26. | :52:29.
those was Abdul, who says he pins down the attacker until police | :52:30. | :52:37.
arrived. -- pinned. It happened at 1220. There was an old man on the | :52:38. | :52:51.
corner. We were trying to give him CPR. We came outside the mosque. | :52:52. | :53:02.
And, umm, we just heard a van turning into us. He ran over some | :53:03. | :53:18.
people. Luckily, I managed to get away. A lot were injured. You | :53:19. | :53:22.
managed to get away, but we are told you detained one of the men. When he | :53:23. | :53:39.
came out of his van, he wanted to run away. He kept saying "I want to | :53:40. | :53:50.
kill Muslims." He came back where he drove over us and I hit him in the | :53:51. | :53:54.
stomach and he fell down on the floor. Me and the other guys held | :53:55. | :54:05.
him on the ground until he couldn't move until the police came. They | :54:06. | :54:09.
took 20 minutes to half an hour. It was a long time. That is absolutely | :54:10. | :54:16.
extraordinary. Just describe this man for us. What did he look like? | :54:17. | :54:20.
And repeat what he was shouting when you were detaining him. He was | :54:21. | :54:35.
saying... He was saying... When we put him on the ground, I emotionally | :54:36. | :54:39.
asked him why he did that. You know? You could kill so many people! I did | :54:40. | :54:43.
not know how many were killed. I said why did you do that? Why did | :54:44. | :54:48.
you do that! You are killing so many people for no reason! This man, you | :54:49. | :55:04.
know, he was, umm, he had an Englishman, he looked like a | :55:05. | :55:08.
builder, he was a big man. He was in his 50s, I think. Very strong. We | :55:09. | :55:12.
couldn't hold him that much, he was very strong. Luckily, there were | :55:13. | :55:15.
other people coming up from the mosque who came to help us. How did | :55:16. | :55:24.
you alert the police that you had this man? Presumably, the police did | :55:25. | :55:37.
not know. People passed by. People came from the mosque and saw the | :55:38. | :55:41.
crowd all over the place. We told them call the ambulance, call the | :55:42. | :55:53.
police. So, that's when the police came. They did not come until they | :55:54. | :55:56.
had backup. That is when they handcuffed him and put him in the | :55:57. | :56:00.
van. That is one of so many eyewitnesses we have heard from this | :56:01. | :56:04.
morning. We will keep you up-to-date through the programme this morning. | :56:05. | :56:08.
That is the main story this morning. Also, Brexit negotiations begin | :56:09. | :56:13.
today. We will cover this later on. We will speak to Michael Gove from | :56:14. | :56:18.
the Conservative Party and Barry Gardiner from the Labour Party. What | :56:19. | :56:25.
does it mean for business? We are out and about at a market in | :56:26. | :56:29.
Manchester. Good morning. Good morning. Good morning, everybody. It | :56:30. | :56:34.
has been busy this morning. Many people coming to collect different | :56:35. | :56:40.
produce for shops and restaurants in the local area. It is busy. I am | :56:41. | :56:44.
talking to business is about what they want to hear from negotiations | :56:45. | :56:49.
and what they will do. I have a negotiation consultant. How should | :56:50. | :56:53.
we approach these? We need to be aware of the complexity of the | :56:54. | :56:58.
negotiations. There are years and years and years of negotiations | :56:59. | :57:01.
ahead. This goes beyond the two year period that keeps being spoken | :57:02. | :57:05.
about. Team discipline is going to be important, making sure everyone | :57:06. | :57:09.
is singing from the same hymn sheet. What we are actually seeing is | :57:10. | :57:18.
multiple demands. We have to get everyone on the same side. That will | :57:19. | :57:23.
be a challenge. We will talk about this later on. Stay with us. We will | :57:24. | :57:26.
be here Plenty more on our website | :57:27. | :00:45.
at the usual address. For the very latest on Finsbury | :00:46. | :00:51.
Park, you can tune into the radio or continue watching the programme. | :00:52. | :00:57.
Hello, this is Breakfast, with Louise Minchin and Dan Walker. | :00:58. | :01:00.
A van drives into a crowd of pedestrians near a north London | :01:01. | :01:03.
mosque, killing one person and injuring several others. | :01:04. | :01:05.
I saw people on the fall, people running left and right, it was | :01:06. | :01:10.
chaos, literally, literally chaos. The incident happened | :01:11. | :01:11.
just after midnight. Many of the victims are believed | :01:12. | :01:13.
to have just finished evening prayers after breaking | :01:14. | :01:16.
their Ramadan fast. This is the scene | :01:17. | :01:18.
there this morning, as police continue to deal | :01:19. | :01:24.
with what they describe Good morning, it's Monday the 19th | :01:25. | :01:27.
of June, we'll have the latest from Finsbury Park | :01:28. | :01:41.
throughout the programme. Historic talks begin in Brussels | :01:42. | :01:43.
today to take Britain out of the European Union, | :01:44. | :01:57.
the government says it marks the start of a new | :01:58. | :01:59.
partnership with the EU. And while the politicians start | :02:00. | :02:12.
talking, I have come to Smithfield market in Manchester to talk to | :02:13. | :02:16.
businesses about what they want from the negotiations. | :02:17. | :02:20.
In sport, the American Brooks Koepka wins the US Open. | :02:21. | :02:23.
He equalled the tournament's lowest winning score of 16 under par | :02:24. | :02:26.
England's Tommy Fleetwood finished fourth. | :02:27. | :02:29.
It has been warm. Yesterday was the warmest day of the year so far. | :02:30. | :02:42.
Today it could be even hotter. For most, dry, sunny and hot that in the | :02:43. | :02:46.
north-west, there is a weather front so here it is cooler | :02:47. | :02:47.
One man has been killed and eight people have been taken to three | :02:48. | :02:56.
separate hospitals after a van drove into a crowd of pedestrians | :02:57. | :02:59.
Theresa May has said police are treating the incident | :03:00. | :03:04.
near Finsbury Park "as a potential terrorist attack" and counter | :03:05. | :03:06.
The Prime Minister has also confirmed she will be chairing | :03:07. | :03:13.
a meeting of the cabinet's emergency Cobra Committee later this morning. | :03:14. | :03:16.
Officers have cordoned off a large area close | :03:17. | :03:18.
Many of the victims are believed to have just left evening prayers, | :03:19. | :03:25.
Police first received calls at around twenty past midnight | :03:26. | :03:31.
of reports that a vehicle had collided with pedestrians. | :03:32. | :03:34.
Emergency services treated a number of casualties | :03:35. | :03:35.
The London Ambulance Service deployed sixty medics to the scene - | :03:36. | :03:49.
including ambulance crews, advance paramedics and specialist | :03:50. | :03:51.
responders, as well as an advance trauma team from London's Air | :03:52. | :03:54.
The Metropolitan Police say the driver of the van - | :03:55. | :04:11.
a 48-year-old man - has been arrested. | :04:12. | :04:13.
The Seven Sisters Road in North London just after midnight. | :04:14. | :04:17.
This footage filmed by an eyewitness was recorded moments after a van | :04:18. | :04:20.
mounted the pavement and struck several pedestrians. | :04:21. | :04:22.
The streets have been filled with worshippers who just left | :04:23. | :04:25.
evening prayers at the Finsbury Park mosque and the nearby Muslim Welfare | :04:26. | :04:28.
He looked straight, he looked straight like it was towards | :04:29. | :04:31.
He basically drove on the pavement, coming straight towards all | :04:32. | :04:41.
the Muslims, and as he was coming to them, he hit all of them. | :04:42. | :04:44.
Within hours, the Muslim Council of Britain claimed the van | :04:45. | :04:47.
was intentionally driven at worshippers. | :04:48. | :04:49.
Police say the driver, a 48-year-old man, was found | :04:50. | :04:51.
by members of the public and handed over to officers to be arrested. | :04:52. | :04:55.
He has since been taken to hospital as a precaution. | :04:56. | :04:57.
And I saw a large crowd of people on the pavement. | :04:58. | :05:02.
I learned after that a van that was standing up by the traffic | :05:03. | :05:05.
lights was the van that mowed the people down. | :05:06. | :05:16.
Several ambulances were on the scene soon afterwards with trauma teams | :05:17. | :05:19.
In the early hours of the morning, Downing Street issued a statement | :05:20. | :05:25.
from Theresa May, saying her thoughts were with all | :05:26. | :05:27.
The Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, who is also a local MP, | :05:28. | :05:31.
said he was totally shocked and had been in touch with mosques | :05:32. | :05:34.
in the area as well as Islington Council. | :05:35. | :05:36.
This morning, the scene remained sealed off as counter-terrorism | :05:37. | :05:39.
officers, for the third time in as many months, | :05:40. | :05:41.
investigate a vehicle being driven into people on London streets | :05:42. | :05:44.
Breakfast's Graham Satchell is in Finsbury Park | :05:45. | :05:59.
Graham, what's the scene like there at the moment? | :06:00. | :06:05.
What more can you tell us this morning? It is a grim and tragically | :06:06. | :06:16.
familiar scene, unfortunately. We are once again sitting in front of | :06:17. | :06:22.
the police cordoned. Once again, a vehicle has been driven into a group | :06:23. | :06:27.
of innocent bystanders. The big difference this time, the driver was | :06:28. | :06:33.
a white man in a white vehicle who appear to be targeting Muslim | :06:34. | :06:37.
worshippers. I think a significant development overnight is that the | :06:38. | :06:41.
police are saying it is the counterterrorism branch that are | :06:42. | :06:44.
investigating this. The originally described it as a major incident. | :06:45. | :06:48.
There is a strong feeling on the grounds that this was an attack, a | :06:49. | :06:52.
terrorist attack, plain and simple, by a white man. We are speaking with | :06:53. | :06:58.
Hussein Ali who has been here all night. What happened last night? I | :06:59. | :07:04.
saw that bang on the main gate and then we looked around and there was | :07:05. | :07:07.
a van Gogh in around and people shouting. -- van going around. I ran | :07:08. | :07:21.
out to go to the other way. Did it appeared to you to be a deliberate | :07:22. | :07:33.
attack? To me, it's obvious. The mosque was full, one o'clock, | :07:34. | :07:38.
midnight prayer. The main target was, and intimate it was no | :07:39. | :07:44.
accident. Some people are saying the man was smiling and shaking his hand | :07:45. | :07:49.
like he was proud. I didn't see that part but... The Muslim Council of | :07:50. | :07:55.
Britain this morning are saying there has been an increase in | :07:56. | :07:59.
Islamaphobia. That the police need to do more to protect Muslim | :08:00. | :08:04.
community. Do you feel that safe on the street? No. Three days ago, I | :08:05. | :08:09.
was in the other mosque, praying. I saw nearly 100 people praying and I | :08:10. | :08:14.
was thinking, like, all of these media, London Bridge, the Islamic | :08:15. | :08:20.
terroristic thermic terrorist. This man chose this place in this area | :08:21. | :08:24.
and particularly this area, a mosque with a radical Abu Hamza. It has | :08:25. | :08:41.
completely changed now. Any form or shape, doesn't matter what religion | :08:42. | :08:45.
they are, they are a person. Some people choose to commit a crime and | :08:46. | :08:51.
they choose to commit crime in here, I blamed the media. That's why I | :08:52. | :08:59.
feel unsafe. Thank you so much for talking to us. Hussein Ali has been | :09:00. | :09:08.
up all night. We do now know that this 48 you are a man was basically | :09:09. | :09:12.
detained by people here on the scene before the police arrived and he is | :09:13. | :09:16.
now in hospital and will be questioned by the police once he is | :09:17. | :09:20.
released and taken into police custody. | :09:21. | :09:27.
Just those remarkable accounts from the eyewitnesses. We spoke to Abdul | :09:28. | :09:42.
Rahman early this morning and he was there early this morning and helped | :09:43. | :09:46.
detained a man. He's the only man who has so far been into custody. | :09:47. | :09:48.
We have been getting reaction in since news of the attack broke | :09:49. | :09:52.
The Prime Minister Theresa May described the event | :09:53. | :09:57.
"All my thoughts are with those who have been injured, | :09:58. | :10:11.
their loved ones, and the emergency services on the scene." | :10:12. | :10:14.
The Leader of the Opposition and the local MP | :10:15. | :10:16.
to the incident Jeremy Corbyn Tweeted that he was "totally | :10:17. | :10:19.
"I've been in touch with the mosques, police | :10:20. | :10:22.
and Islington council regarding the incident. | :10:23. | :10:23.
My thoughts are with those and the community affected | :10:24. | :10:26.
Harun Khan, the Secretary General of the Muslim Council of Britain, | :10:27. | :10:30.
described the incident as a terror attack. | :10:31. | :10:32.
"During the night, ordinary British citizens were set | :10:33. | :10:34.
upon while they were going about their lives, | :10:35. | :10:36.
My prayers are with the victims and their families. | :10:37. | :10:40.
It appears from eye witness accounts that the perpetrator | :10:41. | :10:42.
Our political correspondent Chris Mason is in Westminster | :10:43. | :10:55.
An emergency meeting being held later this morning? Good morning to | :10:56. | :11:12.
you. I was struck watching gradient's report a few minutes ago | :11:13. | :11:16.
when he mentioned the grim frequency in which he has found himself | :11:17. | :11:21.
standing at police cordoned. The equivalent is the frequency of these | :11:22. | :11:25.
Cobra meetings. We seem to be referring to them almost every week. | :11:26. | :11:29.
It is the government's emergency committee that has got together | :11:30. | :11:35.
where they need to be a co-ordinated response to a major incident. There | :11:36. | :11:39.
was a statement from the Prime Minister in the middle of the night | :11:40. | :11:43.
saying she will chair this emergency meeting later this morning, adding | :11:44. | :11:47.
that all of her thoughts are with the victims, their families and the | :11:48. | :11:52.
emergency services on the scene. You are talking about the statesman SIU | :11:53. | :11:55.
received from various leaders. Particularly striking workers from | :11:56. | :11:59.
Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, describing this as Astro -- horrific | :12:00. | :12:04.
terrorist attack on the people of Finsbury Park. Thank you. We are | :12:05. | :12:12.
hoping to speak with Michael Gove in about half an hour as well. | :12:13. | :12:18.
Obviously, Brexit negotiations begin in Brussels as well. Returning to | :12:19. | :12:25.
our main story and the attack that happened outside Finsbury Park | :12:26. | :12:29.
mosque this morning. There are conflicting reports about the number | :12:30. | :12:32.
of people involved. Police are saying there is only one person who | :12:33. | :12:36.
has been arrested and has been taken to hospital. We are hearing | :12:37. | :12:41.
extraordinary eyewitness reports about what happened after that the | :12:42. | :12:47.
vehicle hit pedestrians. Many of the people standing by what hold of the | :12:48. | :12:52.
suspect and detained him until police arrived. We are speaking now | :12:53. | :13:03.
with general -- would Daniel Stanford. | :13:04. | :13:08.
It took the matter of hours and less than that for the counterterrorism | :13:09. | :13:14.
command of the Metropolitan police to take this investigation on and it | :13:15. | :13:19.
has been treated as this point as if the driver of this wide band | :13:20. | :13:23.
deliberately drove straight into a group of people who were leaving the | :13:24. | :13:31.
fast breaking at the end of the day as part of the celebrations of | :13:32. | :13:35.
Ramadan. It appears to have been a higher vehicle -- hire van. He drove | :13:36. | :13:47.
into an elderly man who was building unwell. There is some confusion this | :13:48. | :13:52.
morning. There were two mosques very close to where I'm standing. The | :13:53. | :13:57.
Finsbury Park mosque, once infamous that now a fairly standard mosque. | :13:58. | :14:03.
And Muslim Welfare House about 30 metres behind me. It looks as if | :14:04. | :14:08.
there was people leaving Wilson Welfare House that were particularly | :14:09. | :14:11.
caught up in the incident. -- Muslim. People breaking the farce | :14:12. | :14:20.
were all around this area. It is a very, very busy of North London even | :14:21. | :14:24.
when Ramadan isn't being marked but during Ramadan at this part of the | :14:25. | :14:28.
night, it would have been very, very busy. | :14:29. | :14:37.
And in many people are turning on and taking their kids to school this | :14:38. | :14:42.
morning and maybe turning on their television for the first time this | :14:43. | :14:46.
morning. Bringing you up to date, there was an attack last night and | :14:47. | :14:49.
the Prime Minister Theresa May is saying it was a suspected terrorist | :14:50. | :14:53.
attack. As a major police incident. One man, we believe, a 48-year-old | :14:54. | :14:58.
who has been arrested and now treated in hospital. We have had so | :14:59. | :15:04.
many statements this morning and we are covering this in-depth as much | :15:05. | :15:06.
as we can. A statement has been released saying | :15:07. | :15:19.
please stay calm as the investigation establishes all the | :15:20. | :15:28.
facts. Pray for those affected and for justice. One person has died and | :15:29. | :15:32.
eight have been taken to three separate hospitals. We will take you | :15:33. | :15:39.
back to that story later. Also today, the first Brexit negotiations | :15:40. | :15:45.
are due to start today when David Davis meets Michel Barnier in | :15:46. | :15:54.
Russell is later today -- Brussels. A huge day of negotiations. The | :15:55. | :15:59.
start of a long process. What I both sides trying to achieve? -- are. | :16:00. | :16:09.
David Davis is laying on the charm pretty thick, saying last night he | :16:10. | :16:14.
wants to form a deep and special relationship with the EU, one like | :16:15. | :16:20.
no other in history. He is not out all guns blazing. The EU, | :16:21. | :16:26.
represented by Rachelle Bayern Munich, given negotiating | :16:27. | :16:32.
instructions from the rest of the EU, he says they want to make sure | :16:33. | :16:38.
UK and EU nationals have respective rights. -- Michel Barnier. They also | :16:39. | :16:44.
want to discuss the cost of living and what happens to the border of | :16:45. | :16:48.
Ireland. As you said, this is just the start. A long way to go before | :16:49. | :16:54.
the UK officially leaves in March, 2019. We will speak to Barry | :16:55. | :16:59.
Gardiner and Michael Gove later on about that, but also about the main | :17:00. | :17:04.
story today, the potential terrorist attack in Finsbury Park. Yes. We | :17:05. | :17:13.
know this happened close to a mosque in north London. We have heard many | :17:14. | :17:21.
eyewitnesses at the attack. This man described the incident. | :17:22. | :17:27.
The van literally turned left with no | :17:28. | :17:29.
People gathered around the van to lift it up and get the guy out. | :17:30. | :17:37.
The dying jumped on it and two literally ran. | :17:38. | :17:39.
Not a lot of people were coming out, but as soon as it | :17:40. | :17:43.
happened, people were shouting and gathered around. | :17:44. | :17:45.
The people surrounded him and apprehended him. | :17:46. | :17:48.
He was shouting, "I want to kill all Muslims." | :17:49. | :17:50.
This is a terrorist attack whether he a Muslim, | :17:51. | :17:54.
I don't want to see tomorrow that he has mental issues. | :17:55. | :17:59.
This is categorised as a terrorist, Christian or Muslim. | :18:00. | :18:01.
Anyone who hurts or harms or kills people, this is terrorism. | :18:02. | :18:44.
We will pick up on some of those thoughts with a security specialist | :18:45. | :18:50.
joining us live on the scene in Finsbury Park. We have heard from | :18:51. | :18:56.
eyewitnesses. So many people talking to us this morning. It appears that | :18:57. | :19:01.
the worshippers were deliberately attacked. Certainly, again, always | :19:02. | :19:09.
in the immediate aftermath of these kinds of things, information comes | :19:10. | :19:13.
from various sources and we have to sift through it. With the | :19:14. | :19:17.
information I have been receiving from the locals, this was a well | :19:18. | :19:21.
planned and co-ordinated attack. There are reports of potentially | :19:22. | :19:26.
three people in the vehicle. They targeted a time when outside of the | :19:27. | :19:30.
Muslim community house, people would be coming out from prayers. From my | :19:31. | :19:39.
first assessment, this is clearly a terrorist attack. We know that | :19:40. | :19:44.
police are already involved in the negotiation. What are the priorities | :19:45. | :19:52.
at this point? Really importantly... And this is beyond the levels of | :19:53. | :19:57.
investigation, because certainly the Metropolitan Police and | :19:58. | :20:04.
counter-terrorism group will be working at this to rule out | :20:05. | :20:10.
candidates, possibly from the far right groups, at the moment, it is | :20:11. | :20:14.
important to reassure communities here, as we will be hearing from | :20:15. | :20:19.
local reports, this is being dealt with as seriously as any other | :20:20. | :20:22.
terrorist attack would be dealt with. It is important the government | :20:23. | :20:27.
takes a stance on that. This kind of attack plays directly into the | :20:28. | :20:31.
terrorist agenda. Talk to us a little bit about how you stop these | :20:32. | :20:38.
attacks, as their difficult to prevent seeing that cars are always | :20:39. | :20:48.
on the streets. -- as they are. Absolutely. It is incredibly | :20:49. | :20:52.
difficult. That is why Islamic State and other similar groups are going | :20:53. | :20:55.
to replicate this kind of attack. Ultimately, getting your hands on a | :20:56. | :20:59.
vehicle and driving on streets is something we all do and is virtually | :21:00. | :21:03.
impossible to do without various adjustments to the architecture of | :21:04. | :21:08.
streets in cities. It will be a constant challenge. But ultimately, | :21:09. | :21:13.
in many of these incidences, there seems to be some reconnaissance and | :21:14. | :21:23.
advanced planning. Efforts need to be made to stop that. That is not | :21:24. | :21:28.
just in security measures, but bear in mind, here in London, we have | :21:29. | :21:35.
more CCTV than anywhere else in the world. We need to try to engage with | :21:36. | :21:43.
the antiterrorism hotline and report anything that could be in the | :21:44. | :21:46.
lead-up to an attack. Thank you very much. We have heard so much. Sadiq | :21:47. | :21:52.
Khan said the Metropolitan Police are responding to this horrific | :21:53. | :21:59.
terror attack on Finsbury Park. We will hopefully speak to the Mayor of | :22:00. | :22:04.
London later on BBC Breakfast. One has died and eight are being treated | :22:05. | :22:09.
across three different hospitals. A 48-year-old man has been arrested | :22:10. | :22:13.
and is in hospital himself this morning. He drove a fan into people | :22:14. | :22:17.
outside a mosque in Finsbury Park this morning. -- van. You will | :22:18. | :22:24.
understand we have to push things around this morning due to the | :22:25. | :22:27.
breaking news. And now for the weather. Good morning. Another hot | :22:28. | :22:31.
and sunny day for most of the UK. Most, because in the north-west, we | :22:32. | :22:37.
have a weather front producing rain. Some will be heavy. But as we go | :22:38. | :22:43.
south, it will change to fizzle. The chance of a sharp shower in southern | :22:44. | :22:48.
Scotland, northern England, and Northern Ireland. You will see one | :22:49. | :22:53.
or two showers pop in eastern England and around the Midlands. | :22:54. | :22:59.
Again, it will be just an exception. As we go south, highs of 33 degrees | :23:00. | :23:05.
in parts of the south-east. Through this evening and overnight, we will | :23:06. | :23:09.
lose the showers. Dry weather around. We will bring in more cloud | :23:10. | :23:14.
from the North Sea. It will be another sultry night. Sticky. 21 in | :23:15. | :23:20.
Cardiff being the overnight low. More fresh further north. Through | :23:21. | :23:25.
tomorrow, dry weather. The weather front will come south and things | :23:26. | :23:31.
will freshen up behind it. Hull could be 10 degrees lower than | :23:32. | :23:36.
today. We could see a high of dirty one in the south-west with a risk of | :23:37. | :23:41.
showers later in the day. -- 31. Thank you. If you have been watching | :23:42. | :23:47.
us, you will know that the programme is dominated I what happened in | :23:48. | :23:51.
Finsbury Park. We will keep you up-to-date on that. In other news, | :23:52. | :23:58.
we start discussions to leave the EU today with David Davis talking to | :23:59. | :24:00.
Michel Barnier in Brussels. I want to get your response to what | :24:01. | :24:15.
we have been speaking about this morning, the terrible attack in | :24:16. | :24:21.
Finsbury Park. Yes, look, I think this terrorist attack is absolutely | :24:22. | :24:25.
vile. And what it does is it actually will be welcomed by those | :24:26. | :24:34.
who are the extremists perpetrating other terrorist attacks. This would | :24:35. | :24:40.
appear to have been a revenge attack from what eyewitnesses are saying. | :24:41. | :24:44.
And, of course, that is precisely the objective of terrorism. They | :24:45. | :24:50.
want to divide us and ring hatred between different elements of our | :24:51. | :24:55.
community. And it is so important we do not let them do that. We must | :24:56. | :24:59.
stand united against all forms of hatred and all forms of terrorism. I | :25:00. | :25:04.
am sure you can understand what we have been hearing from eyewitnesses | :25:05. | :25:08.
concerned and worried, fearing for the rain safety, especially those | :25:09. | :25:11.
Muslims who feel deliberately targeted by this. -- their own. | :25:12. | :25:17.
Exactly. Eyewitness accounts have suggested this would appear to have | :25:18. | :25:25.
been an Islamophobic attack. It was clearly directed against worshippers | :25:26. | :25:28.
at the mosque. And if that is in fact the case, then those from | :25:29. | :25:35.
Islamic State and Daesh will be cheering, because they do not care | :25:36. | :25:39.
about the lives of the people that they mow down. They mow down | :25:40. | :25:45.
indiscriminately, whether they are Muslim, Christian, Jew, or Hindu. | :25:46. | :25:52.
They just want to destroy the way of life we have in this country, which | :25:53. | :25:56.
is about tolerance, openness, engaging with each other in respect. | :25:57. | :26:08.
That is what they want to destroy. And thus by this sort of revenge | :26:09. | :26:12.
attack, as it would appear, this is exactly what terrorism wants to do, | :26:13. | :26:15.
start further terrorism. We must not let it. It is horrible to talk to | :26:16. | :26:20.
you about this on a day when it is the start of Brexit talks. | :26:21. | :26:27.
Understandably, what has happened in Finsbury Park is the first thing we | :26:28. | :26:34.
have to talk about. Can I ask you about two different points of view | :26:35. | :26:38.
coming from Iran party in the last 24 hours? The Shadow Home Secretary | :26:39. | :26:42.
yesterday, I will read you comment from him and John McDonnell as well. | :26:43. | :26:47.
He supports leaving the single market and ending free movement, but | :26:48. | :26:54.
wants to leave the custom union on the table. And John McDonnell said | :26:55. | :26:58.
yesterday I don't care how we get it as long as we get access to the | :26:59. | :27:11.
single market para free. -- tariff. There is obviously a difference in | :27:12. | :27:14.
the Labour Party. What is happening? The first thing I want to say is | :27:15. | :27:20.
today is an important day for the UK and Europe as a whole. I wish both | :27:21. | :27:26.
David Davis and Michel Barnier well in these negotiations to be we want | :27:27. | :27:31.
a positive outcome for both sides. -- negotiations. We want to do this | :27:32. | :27:38.
positively. That is the first thing. With regards to the points you made, | :27:39. | :27:42.
both of my colleagues are saying the same thing, it is outcomes that | :27:43. | :27:48.
matter. It is the tariff free access to the single market, making sure we | :27:49. | :28:01.
have no increased burdens, tariff burdens or non-tariff barriers to | :28:02. | :28:03.
trade that is absolutely essential. That is what the government needs to | :28:04. | :28:10.
negotiate. That is what my party needs to negotiate and what it would | :28:11. | :28:15.
if it was in power. We need to talk about the structures and say it has | :28:16. | :28:20.
to be this and it has to be that, that is secondary. The point is it | :28:21. | :28:24.
has to be the best deal for jobs in the economy that we can possibly | :28:25. | :28:28.
get. And that in a different way was exactly what both of my colleagues | :28:29. | :28:32.
were saying. Thank you very much for your time this morning. I appreciate | :28:33. | :28:40.
your time on that and talking about Finsbury Park as well this | :28:41. | :32:02.
I'm back with the latest from the BBC London Newsroom | :32:03. | :32:05.
Hello, this is Breakfast with Louise Minchin and Dan Walker. | :32:06. | :32:14.
One man has been killed and eight people have been taken to hospital | :32:15. | :32:18.
after a van drove into a crowd of pedestrians near a mosque | :32:19. | :32:21.
Theresa May has said police are treating the incident | :32:22. | :32:31.
near Finsbury Park "as a potential terrorist attack" and counter | :32:32. | :32:33.
The Prime Minister has also confirmed she will be chairing | :32:34. | :32:37.
a meeting of the cabinet's emergency Cobra Committee later this morning. | :32:38. | :32:40.
Breakfast's Graham Satchell is in Finsbury Park | :32:41. | :32:42.
Graham, what's the scene like there at the moment? | :32:43. | :33:02.
The resistance of depressing deja vu. We are once again standing at a | :33:03. | :33:11.
police cordon. We are near the Arsenal football ground on Seven | :33:12. | :33:14.
Sisters Road and next to two mosques. The Finsbury Park mosque | :33:15. | :33:22.
and the Muslim Welfare House. Police initially described it as a major | :33:23. | :33:26.
incident but as the night went on, very quickly I think in these | :33:27. | :33:30.
circumstances, the police are now saying it is counterterrorism | :33:31. | :33:33.
officers that are investigating. Theresa May is saying it a potential | :33:34. | :33:38.
terrorist attack. No doubt amongst the people here who witnessed it, | :33:39. | :33:41.
they think it was deliberate and targeted. The big difference this | :33:42. | :33:46.
time, of course, compared to the other times when a man has driven a | :33:47. | :33:50.
vehicle into people is that this was a white man and the victims were | :33:51. | :33:54.
Muslim worshippers who had just come out other mosque. But have a quick | :33:55. | :33:59.
chat with Hashem. He is from Tunisia, in which is not his best | :34:00. | :34:04.
language. What did you see? I see the person with the car and many | :34:05. | :34:13.
people. One person, I think he died and people with blood. When he | :34:14. | :34:22.
stopped the car, one person from Algeria, he catch him out from the | :34:23. | :34:28.
car and other guys, one Muslim guys, would them down and he told everyone | :34:29. | :34:37.
not anyone beat him. Just waiting for the police. So he drove | :34:38. | :34:43.
deliberately to this group of people. Did he aimed directly? | :34:44. | :34:53.
Direct yes. Will you scared? Leigh yes, I was scared. First time I see | :34:54. | :35:04.
like that. Blood. One person I see die, I never see like that. I want | :35:05. | :35:10.
ambulance, something, I ask people move back. Think if talking to us. | :35:11. | :35:19.
One of the many people who witnessed this terrible incident. We do now | :35:20. | :35:25.
know that one person has died, aged people are injured and in three | :35:26. | :35:28.
separate hospitals across North London. The man who has been | :35:29. | :35:32.
arrested by police is currently in hospital but police say they will | :35:33. | :35:36.
start questioning him once he is released and in police custody. That | :35:37. | :35:41.
is green satchel he was outside the mosque in Finsbury Park this morning | :35:42. | :35:48.
where the attack took place -- Graeme Satchell. | :35:49. | :35:50.
Adil Rana was at the mosque when the attack took place | :35:51. | :35:53.
As Wilson is, we do feel safe walking the streets. I have | :35:54. | :36:02.
brothers, mothers. -- as Muslims. When we go out, we stay vigilant, | :36:03. | :36:08.
stay safe. As Muslims, growing up in the UK, we don't feel safe to sing | :36:09. | :36:11.
our religion and why is it like that? The question that is always | :36:12. | :36:16.
asked in the medium, what can be done by the government for us to | :36:17. | :36:20.
feel safe and the truth is that nothing. -- practising our religion. | :36:21. | :36:27.
Nothing can be done about it, nothing at all. | :36:28. | :36:33.
We also talked to Omar who was at the mosque breaking his fast. I came | :36:34. | :36:40.
at sunset time to break my fast. I am praying. After that, I am just | :36:41. | :36:49.
seeing the white band that is coming and crashing into people, people are | :36:50. | :36:54.
on the floor, the people that there are trying to help and it is | :36:55. | :37:01.
pandemonium. People screaming, people crying. Did it seem like a | :37:02. | :37:05.
deliberate attack? Irra 100% that this was a deliberate attack on the | :37:06. | :37:12.
Muslim community. -- 100%. The individual came in and ploughed into | :37:13. | :37:14.
Muslims. We can hear now from two people | :37:15. | :37:17.
who were close-by when it happened. I just saw people on the floor, | :37:18. | :37:25.
people running left and right, it was chaos at literally, literally | :37:26. | :37:31.
chaos. As he hit the people, one of them ran out and police came quick | :37:32. | :37:37.
and thank God for the police, they can quick. A lot of people got hurt. | :37:38. | :37:49.
It looked straight Lachie was towards Muslims. -- like he was | :37:50. | :37:56.
going towards Muslims. He drove straight up the pavement and towards | :37:57. | :38:00.
Muslims. He hit all of them and they think one of them died. One of them | :38:01. | :38:05.
died straightaway. And then the rest are in a bad condition. How many | :38:06. | :38:12.
people did you see lying injured in the ground. Seven or eight. | :38:13. | :38:18.
Seriously injured. As the police came, I think they got it under | :38:19. | :38:28.
control. A man was let loose defender telling us. We don't know | :38:29. | :38:32.
if we are safe. We are seeing cars going about, I do know who it could | :38:33. | :38:40.
be. Is this a terrorist? I literally saw the van, the doors were open. I | :38:41. | :38:44.
heard the bang from inside. Literally, a came behind him. Next | :38:45. | :38:50.
minute, the phone and making a snap a video, formed. -- boom. | :38:51. | :39:06.
We can speak now to Cabinet member Michael Gove. What is your response | :39:07. | :39:13.
given what has happened? I'm absolutely horrified it is | :39:14. | :39:17.
disgusting. I really feel for those who have been caught up in it and | :39:18. | :39:21.
they want to seem a decent sympathies to those who have been | :39:22. | :39:25.
affected and those families who will be grieving as a result of this. The | :39:26. | :39:29.
whole point is, these people who were at a place of worship and it | :39:30. | :39:35.
should be absolutely sacrosanct. Everything about it looks like a | :39:36. | :39:39.
terrorist act and am glad that the Prime Minister is getting all the | :39:40. | :39:43.
top security team together at her Cobra meeting this morning to see | :39:44. | :39:47.
exactly what we can do in order to provide reassurance and support to | :39:48. | :39:52.
people who are grieving and who have lost, as a result of this | :39:53. | :39:57.
unspeakable act of evil. Will be at -- will there be more police | :39:58. | :40:01.
protection for worshippers? Given that we need adequate protection | :40:02. | :40:08.
particularly for people who are at a special time, celebrating their | :40:09. | :40:14.
faith. --I think we need adequate protection. People have the right to | :40:15. | :40:23.
lead their lives in peace. We have heard from the Council of Britain | :40:24. | :40:27.
this morning saying people in the Muslim committee would have seen | :40:28. | :40:31.
this coming. What you say to that? We need to get all the facts that | :40:32. | :40:36.
are absolutely sympathise to those that are affected by this and I | :40:37. | :40:39.
think one of the things about Britain is that we ensure that | :40:40. | :40:43.
individuals were going about their daily lives, whether they are | :40:44. | :40:47.
worshipping, breaking their fast for celebrating their faith, should have | :40:48. | :40:55.
the absolute guarantee and knowledge that they're secure and safe in | :40:56. | :40:59.
Britain and valued in Britain. London already, we are all very | :41:00. | :41:05.
aware, was in a sombre mood, particularly what happened at | :41:06. | :41:09.
Grenfell Tower. Dew think the government response was tardy? -- do | :41:10. | :41:13.
you think. Bello the Prime Minister has said the response all of -- | :41:14. | :41:17.
overall was not good enough -- the Prime Minister. I spent yesterday by | :41:18. | :41:26.
the side of the fire site. I was also speaking to a teacher who had | :41:27. | :41:31.
been directly affected. Some of the children who he cares for a missing | :41:32. | :41:37.
at the moment. Those of us in government are understandably | :41:38. | :41:42.
determined to make sure we act more effectively into speaking | :41:43. | :41:44.
personally, I am distraught about what happened. I used to live very, | :41:45. | :41:49.
very near to their and it is an area I know well and my heart goes out to | :41:50. | :41:53.
those affected are the most important thing now is that we do | :41:54. | :41:58.
everything we can as a government to make sure people are supported | :41:59. | :42:03.
through this very difficult period. Why were recommendations not acted | :42:04. | :42:07.
upon and will that change? I think we need to look exactly at that | :42:08. | :42:11.
point you rates. Recommendations have been made in the past about how | :42:12. | :42:16.
we can make people safer. It appears as though the recommendations did | :42:17. | :42:19.
not have the effect they should have done. We have got to ask why and to | :42:20. | :42:25.
learn from that. The reasonably more determined than me to get to the | :42:26. | :42:28.
bottom of this because it is absolutely horrific and unforgivable | :42:29. | :42:35.
situation to have in the heart of our capital in a 21st-century. | :42:36. | :42:41.
Facing the terrible disaster and its aftermath. Right now, people are | :42:42. | :42:45.
living in similar blocks so how soon can beat things be changed? Change | :42:46. | :42:51.
can't come soon enough. -- how soon can things be changed? The Prime | :42:52. | :42:56.
Minister is setting up a team of the very, best people to lecture we can | :42:57. | :43:03.
provide support not just by the families affected in Kensington but | :43:04. | :43:07.
also people in housing across the country with the reassurance that is | :43:08. | :43:12.
definite. -- to make sure. Do you think the Prime Minister in this | :43:13. | :43:16.
rate the public mood? Allan I think questions about mood at this --I | :43:17. | :43:27.
think questions about mood are... Commentators can make judgements | :43:28. | :43:30.
about this kind of thing. I think the most important thing for me to | :43:31. | :43:34.
do as a politician is to play my part in making sure that change | :43:35. | :43:38.
comes and that we safeguard and protect people in vulnerable | :43:39. | :43:41.
circumstances. Important negotiations begin today with regard | :43:42. | :43:44.
to Brexit. You think the government's that is weakened by | :43:45. | :43:49.
what happened in the general election? The general election is | :43:50. | :43:53.
not what I or any Conservative would have wanted that during the course | :43:54. | :43:57.
of the election, Conservatives and Labour argued that we should leave | :43:58. | :44:01.
the European Union. We should they longer be subjected to what is | :44:02. | :44:04.
called the single market, effectively, the jurisdiction of the | :44:05. | :44:07.
European Court of Justice. And that we should take back control of our | :44:08. | :44:13.
laws, our borders and indeed take control of the opportunity to forge | :44:14. | :44:17.
new trade deals. Even though the Conservatives don't have a majority, | :44:18. | :44:21.
the majority of the people in the House of Commons were elected on the | :44:22. | :44:25.
basis of making a success of Britain leaving the EU. You talk about | :44:26. | :44:30.
commentators. Commentators in the Daily Telegraph and the Times today | :44:31. | :44:34.
say Theresa May's position is still at risk. Would you throw your hat | :44:35. | :44:38.
into the ring? Elena added is at risk all. --I don't think it is at | :44:39. | :44:45.
risk at all. The point is, David Davis is going to Brussels today, | :44:46. | :44:50.
making sure that the outcome of British people voted for just under | :44:51. | :44:56.
a year ago is delivered and there is a series of Golden opportunities for | :44:57. | :45:00.
us outside the EU. We can take back control of our fishing orders and | :45:01. | :45:03.
lecture we have sea of opportunity out there so we can revive an | :45:04. | :45:07.
industry that has suffered during the time we have been in the | :45:08. | :45:11.
European Union. We can have better environmental protection and also | :45:12. | :45:13.
make sure our farmers are better supported than before. We can have | :45:14. | :45:16.
new trade deals with countries across the world which enabled the | :45:17. | :45:20.
ingenuity and creativity of the British people to operate in a far | :45:21. | :45:25.
broader canvas. Also, we can have politicians that are more directly | :45:26. | :45:29.
accountable to all of us as a result of making sure that decisions which | :45:30. | :45:34.
are intimately involved in the lives of all of us are taken here by | :45:35. | :45:39.
people who are elected by us rather than distant politicians who we | :45:40. | :45:45.
didn't choose and can't kick out. Do you have leadership ambitions? Note, | :45:46. | :45:49.
is the short answer. More importantly, I need to make sure we | :45:50. | :45:53.
can make a success of Britain leaving the EU. The important thing, | :45:54. | :46:02.
I think, instead of looking at the commentator froth that you alluded | :46:03. | :46:06.
to earlier, let's have a serious, to -- conversation about what is | :46:07. | :46:10.
available to us being outside the EU. | :46:11. | :46:16.
Michael Gove speaking about Brexit, his party, and the suspected terror | :46:17. | :46:27.
attack outside Finsbury Park Mosque around midnight last night. Eight | :46:28. | :46:33.
have been treated at three different hospitals, one has died, and a | :46:34. | :46:38.
48-year-old man has been arrested after driving his van into these | :46:39. | :46:44.
people outside of their mosque around midnight after they were | :46:45. | :46:50.
praying overnight having broken their fast for Ramadan. We believe | :46:51. | :47:05.
that the van was driven into people outside the Muslim Welfare House. | :47:06. | :47:10.
They released a statement saying all of our prayers go to those injured | :47:11. | :47:14.
and passed. The Muslim community is shocked. They have said they have | :47:15. | :47:18.
worked hard for decades to build a peaceful and tolerant community and | :47:19. | :47:22.
they condemn any act of hate to divide the unified community. They | :47:23. | :47:34.
appeal for calm and say it is not helpful to speculate. They say they | :47:35. | :47:38.
have met with the council and local MP, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, and | :47:39. | :47:41.
thank them for their support. The programme is donated by that this | :47:42. | :47:45.
morning, but we are trying to keep up-to-date with various things. -- | :47:46. | :47:49.
dominated. And that includes the weather. It is glorious. That is | :47:50. | :47:55.
correct. It has been high temperatures for many of us this | :47:56. | :48:00.
morning already. It is 23 already in Heathrow. Bristol, not far behind. | :48:01. | :48:08.
Belfast, 15. For many of us today, sunny and warm, hot, depending on | :48:09. | :48:14.
where you are. The other thing is the pollen level. It is high across | :48:15. | :48:21.
the UK except in the north. That is where we have the weather front and | :48:22. | :48:27.
rain. It is also between ten and 12. A fresh start for you. The extent of | :48:28. | :48:33.
the sunshine you can see. The temperature will rise rapidly | :48:34. | :48:37.
through the morning, reaching the high 20s into the low 30s for some | :48:38. | :48:41.
of us. South-west England, certainly into the high 20s today. 29 here. A | :48:42. | :48:50.
lot of sunshine. It will always be fresher on the coastline. In the | :48:51. | :48:57.
south-east, 33. Some showers might develop in central and eastern | :48:58. | :49:05.
areas. Hit and miss. If you see them in southern Scotland, there could be | :49:06. | :49:09.
heavy. The same for Northern Ireland. Many will not have them all | :49:10. | :49:13.
together. There will be dry weather around. It will be that bit more | :49:14. | :49:18.
fresh. Wales once again. Highs of up to 29. Through the evening and | :49:19. | :49:24.
overnight, the risk of showers tends to fade. A lot of dry weather | :49:25. | :49:29.
around. It will be another sticky night, especially so across England | :49:30. | :49:35.
and Wales. Cardiff, for example, not dropping lower than 20. Scotland, | :49:36. | :49:39.
Northern Ireland, a weather front coming south. Fresh conditions | :49:40. | :49:46.
following on behind. Tomorrow, this is the weather front. A week feature | :49:47. | :49:49.
producing cloud in parts of eastern and central England. -- weak. Not as | :49:50. | :49:58.
hot tomorrow. Hull, 10 degrees down on the day. The Wash as well. 20- | :49:59. | :50:05.
21. The highest temperature is still in the south, especially the | :50:06. | :50:09.
south-west of the you can see in these areas, south Wales, thundery | :50:10. | :50:16.
showers. If you catch one, it will be heavy. Wednesday, rain in the | :50:17. | :50:20.
north of the country. The heat will build from the south once more. | :50:21. | :50:27.
Hull, Tuesday, dropping in temperature, picking up again on | :50:28. | :50:32.
Wednesday. Will allow Scott, for the first part of the week right until | :50:33. | :50:36.
Ladies Day, quite hot and still dry and sunny. -- Royal Ascot. Thank | :50:37. | :50:44.
you. We will see you in half an hour. It is one of those mornings I | :50:45. | :50:53.
am afraid we're giving you sad news. A band hit a cloud of pedestrians | :50:54. | :51:01.
near midnight last night killing one person and injuring eight others. -- | :51:02. | :51:13.
van hit a crowd. We are joined by the Ramadan Organisation. It appears | :51:14. | :51:15.
people were deliberately targeted in the attack. What is your response? | :51:16. | :51:21.
Obviously shocking. Once again we are here. Innocent lives have been | :51:22. | :51:25.
lost on our streets. We have to say enough is enough. It doesn't matter | :51:26. | :51:32.
if it is Islamic State, far right extremism, human life is sacred. We | :51:33. | :51:35.
have to reflect on our language, how we debate issues, we all have to | :51:36. | :51:44.
come together. It is one year since Jo Cox. It brings it home to you | :51:45. | :51:49.
that behind every political event, people are involved. I have not | :51:50. | :51:57.
slept. Sorry. We appreciate that. It has been a long night and continues | :51:58. | :52:03.
into a long morning for you as well. Can I read you something from the | :52:04. | :52:06.
Chief Executive of the Muslim council? He says people in the | :52:07. | :52:11.
community will have seen this happening. What does he mean? There | :52:12. | :52:17.
is rampant Islamophobia. Look at the commentators, you know who they are, | :52:18. | :52:21.
I will not name them, they do not reflect on the language they use. As | :52:22. | :52:33.
I said, there is a comedy awry say, there is an increase in these events | :52:34. | :52:41.
near mosques. -- dare I say. Many in the Muslim committee have been | :52:42. | :52:49.
banging their heads against walls to ministers saying take this | :52:50. | :52:51.
seriously. I hope the Prime Minister recognises that. There is feeling | :52:52. | :52:57.
there this morning, as well as in London over the past few weeks. What | :52:58. | :53:01.
would you say to them? Stay together and don't let terrorism divide us. | :53:02. | :53:04.
Whatever your background is, whatever your faith, we are British | :53:05. | :53:10.
people. Our values of tolerance and respect are stronger than them. You | :53:11. | :53:15.
mentioned the murder of Jo Cox. Her husband, Brendan Cox, has been, as | :53:16. | :53:21.
you said, he released a statement on social media this morning. He said | :53:22. | :53:27.
when Islamic terrorists attack us, we seek out hate speech that keeps | :53:28. | :53:43.
them going. We must do the same today for far right extremism. Yes. | :53:44. | :53:47.
We have to call out these hate preachers. To show you my timeline, | :53:48. | :53:55.
the amount of hatred I have received in the last 12 hours is shocking. | :53:56. | :54:00.
But that is common for people in places like I hold. And now, our | :54:01. | :54:13.
correspondent has been speaking to Amber Rudd about this. She was asked | :54:14. | :54:20.
if the attacker was known. Amber Rudd, the Home Secretary, said we do | :54:21. | :54:24.
not know this at this stage. That is the latest we have from the Home | :54:25. | :54:28.
Secretary, Amber Rudd, this morning, from our correspondent, Chris Mason. | :54:29. | :54:33.
That story is dominating the programme. We will keep you | :54:34. | :54:39.
up-to-date. But also the day, Brexit negotiations begin. -- today. What | :54:40. | :54:45.
does it mean good morning. Good morning. I am in Manchester, at the | :54:46. | :54:50.
markets. They are finishing up this morning. Dots of people have been | :54:51. | :54:55.
buying produce. This is a wholesale market. -- lots. They have been | :54:56. | :55:00.
buying stocks and supplies for restaurants and shops. I have been | :55:01. | :55:05.
speaking to businesses about what they want to hear from Brexit | :55:06. | :55:08.
negotiations and what they will involve. We have Natalie, who helps | :55:09. | :55:14.
people negotiate, including companies all over the world. What | :55:15. | :55:18.
is the key? Managing complexity. That is a huge issue. We had years | :55:19. | :55:25.
of negotiations to come. Many issues to be negotiated. We have to be | :55:26. | :55:30.
flexible and manage this. Two years will not be enough. We have to be | :55:31. | :55:35.
flexible on the timeline. What are the key things you are saying to | :55:36. | :55:40.
people when you advise them? Being prepared, planning effectively, | :55:41. | :55:44.
understanding all of the issues, and recognising it is not always the | :55:45. | :55:47.
really big issues that will swing whether a deal gets done, it is | :55:48. | :55:52.
often the more small issues that no one thinks about that will hold | :55:53. | :55:56.
things up. We will see this happen over the months and years to come | :55:57. | :56:00.
with things we did not anticipate being as big as they are. It will | :56:01. | :56:04.
take longer than we think? The divorce proceedings, the Brexit | :56:05. | :56:09.
proceedings, it is meant to be two years but I think it will be longer. | :56:10. | :56:13.
The trade deals after that as well. All of this is creating uncertainty. | :56:14. | :56:18.
We have talked about this before. Businesses worry about uncertainty. | :56:19. | :56:23.
What else are the worrying about? What they are looking at is | :56:24. | :56:28.
uncertainty and stability and clarity. That is difficult in an | :56:29. | :56:31.
environment like this. Governments can help by stressing the importance | :56:32. | :56:37.
of the economy during the heart of the Brexit negotiations. The | :56:38. | :56:40.
messages we have gotten from the government is highly political. It | :56:41. | :56:44.
is not clear that the economic and business means are at the forefront. | :56:45. | :56:51.
This could take ages. It could. The government could help spelling out | :56:52. | :56:56.
the kinds of things it is looking for in this. They have been clear | :56:57. | :57:01.
since the Prime Minister talked about this. Getting outside of the | :57:02. | :57:07.
EU, the single market, et cetera. We have to talk about the roots of how | :57:08. | :57:12.
we get where we are today. It is about getting the benefits of the | :57:13. | :57:19.
deal. Thank you for your time this morning. That is | :57:20. | :00:38.
I'm back with the latest from the BBC London Newsroom | :00:39. | :00:41.
Hello, is Breakfast, with Louise Minchin and Dan Walker... | :00:42. | :00:48.
A van drives into a crowd of pedestrians near a north London | :00:49. | :00:51.
mosque, killing one person and injuring several others. | :00:52. | :00:56.
This is a terrorist attack, whether he's a Muslim or a Christian, this | :00:57. | :01:03.
is a terrorist attack. The attack happened | :01:04. | :01:06.
just after midnight. Many of the victims are believed | :01:07. | :01:08.
to have just finished evening prayers after breaking | :01:09. | :01:10.
their Ramadan fast. This is the scene there this | :01:11. | :01:11.
morning, as police continue to deal with what they describe | :01:12. | :01:18.
as a "major incident". Good morning, it's Monday | :01:19. | :01:35.
the 19th of June, we'll have the latest from Finsbury Park | :01:36. | :01:37.
throughout the programme. Historic talks begin in Brussels | :01:38. | :01:39.
today to take Britain out of the European Union, | :01:40. | :01:46.
the government says it marks the start of a new partnership | :01:47. | :01:49.
with the EU. Good morning and while the | :01:50. | :02:03.
politicians start talking I've come to Smith mailed -- Smithfield Market | :02:04. | :02:08.
to talk to businesses about what they want from the discussions. | :02:09. | :02:14.
Temperatures will peak at 33 degrees in the south-east, the rain easing | :02:15. | :02:24.
as we go through the day, but feeling fresher in some areas. I'll | :02:25. | :02:27.
have more in 15 minutes. One man has been killed and eight | :02:28. | :02:31.
people have been taken to three separate hospitals after a van drove | :02:32. | :02:37.
into a crowd of pedestrians Theresa May has said police | :02:38. | :02:40.
are treating the incident near Finsbury Park "as a potential | :02:41. | :02:44.
terrorist attack" and counter The Prime Minister has also | :02:45. | :02:46.
confirmed she will be chairing a meeting of the cabinet's emergency | :02:47. | :02:50.
Cobra Committee later this morning. Police first received calls | :02:51. | :02:56.
at around twenty past midnight of reports that a vehicle had | :02:57. | :02:58.
collided with pedestrians Many of the victims are believed | :02:59. | :03:00.
to have just left evening prayers, The Metropolitan Police say | :03:01. | :03:05.
the driver of the van - a 48 year old man - | :03:06. | :03:11.
has been arrested. The Seven Sisters Road | :03:12. | :03:14.
in North London just after midnight. This footage filmed by an eyewitness | :03:15. | :03:22.
was recorded moments after a van mounted the pavement | :03:23. | :03:25.
and struck several pedestrians. The streets had been filled | :03:26. | :03:31.
with worshippers who just left evening prayers at the Finsbury Park | :03:32. | :03:35.
mosque and the nearby He looked straight, | :03:36. | :03:37.
he looked straight like it He basically drove on the pavement, | :03:38. | :03:44.
coming straight towards all the Muslims, and as he was coming | :03:45. | :03:51.
to them, he hit all of them. Within hours, the Muslim Council | :03:52. | :03:55.
of Britain claimed the van was Police say the driver, | :03:56. | :03:57.
a 48-year-old man, was found by members of the public and handed | :03:58. | :04:02.
over to officers to be arrested. He has since been taken | :04:03. | :04:07.
to hospital as a precaution. And I saw a large crowd | :04:08. | :04:10.
of people on the pavement. I learned after that a van | :04:11. | :04:23.
that was standing by the traffic lights was the van that mowed | :04:24. | :04:26.
the people down. Several ambulances were on the scene | :04:27. | :04:28.
soon afterwards with trauma teams Theresa May says police are treating | :04:29. | :04:41.
this as a potential terrorist attack. The local MP and Labour | :04:42. | :04:46.
leader Jeremy Corbyn said he'd been in touch with Islington Council and | :04:47. | :04:50.
local mosques in the area. This morning the scene remained sealed | :04:51. | :04:54.
off as counterterrorism officers for the third time in as many months to | :04:55. | :04:59.
investigate a vehicle driven into people on London streets with deadly | :05:00. | :05:02.
consequences. Craig Dawson, BBC News. | :05:03. | :05:09.
Breakfast's Graham Satchell is in Finsbury Park | :05:10. | :05:11.
A very hefty police presence there this morning. | :05:12. | :05:23.
You can see police vans obscuring the view, we are close to Arsenal | :05:24. | :05:32.
football ground, something terribly familiar at about this, another | :05:33. | :05:36.
vehicle driven into a group of innocent bystanders on a pavement, | :05:37. | :05:40.
this time the key difference, it was a fight man driving a white van who | :05:41. | :05:45.
targeted Muslim worshippers who had just been to a mosque. To give you a | :05:46. | :05:50.
quick idea, there are two mosques here, Muslim well for house, one | :05:51. | :05:54.
most people were standing outside and Finsbury Park mosque. Let's talk | :05:55. | :06:00.
to all Mahut has been here all night, tell me what you saw. | :06:01. | :06:06.
Obviously I had been in the locality praying and breaking my fast in the | :06:07. | :06:12.
mosque, I ate a little bit more afterwards, I came out, I went to | :06:13. | :06:17.
the shop, when I came back I have seen pandemonium break-out, people | :06:18. | :06:23.
calling me and asking me your defence we parked and I am telling | :06:24. | :06:26.
them, I've seen come off lots of cold... The assailant being held, | :06:27. | :06:31.
you understand, by people, the local community. I have seen people | :06:32. | :06:37.
screaming, crying, total anarchy. And I saw police grab the individual | :06:38. | :06:43.
and arrest him as well. From what you could tell, did this look to use | :06:44. | :06:48.
like a deliberate, targeted attack? There's no doubt in my mind this was | :06:49. | :06:52.
definitely targeted towards the Muslim community that live here. | :06:53. | :06:56.
There are two mosques here, we are in the last ten days of Ramadan, the | :06:57. | :07:02.
mosques will be more overloaded than they usually aren't because the | :07:03. | :07:06.
mosque becomes packed during the last ten days of the night, you | :07:07. | :07:13.
understand, when that is happening, this individual, he sees Muslims, | :07:14. | :07:18.
innocent, pride, law-abiding citizens and he has targeted them, | :07:19. | :07:24.
you understand? What it's done to the community, it's absolutely | :07:25. | :07:27.
destroyed the community, devastated, the community is deeply saddened. Or | :07:28. | :07:33.
more, thank you so much. You have been up all night and witnessed | :07:34. | :07:37.
terrible things. The police are saying that this man is now in | :07:38. | :07:44.
hospital. -- Omar. He will be questioned once he is released from | :07:45. | :07:49.
hospital and I am just going to be joined, actually, by Abdul. Good | :07:50. | :07:54.
morning. I understand you were involved in wrestling this man out | :07:55. | :07:57.
of his vehicle, can you tell me more? The man came from his van to | :07:58. | :08:04.
run away and two more... I don't know, bad to the people, and people | :08:05. | :08:11.
were coming over behind him to get him down to the ground. He came past | :08:12. | :08:15.
my side, I tackled him down to the ground. With the help of other | :08:16. | :08:23.
people, so we managed to... You got him on the ground? What was he | :08:24. | :08:28.
saying? He was saying when he was running, I am going to kill more | :08:29. | :08:33.
people. Then he was on the ground I asked him, why did you do that, why? | :08:34. | :08:38.
Innocent people. And he goes, I want to kill Muslims. I want to kill | :08:39. | :08:45.
Muslims. And kill me. And I said why did you do that? A terrifying | :08:46. | :08:51.
incident to be involved in. It is. I thought, I was just... In my | :08:52. | :09:01.
imagination... I was just, like, people on the floor. Do you think | :09:02. | :09:06.
this was a deliberate attack, did you feel you are being targeted? | :09:07. | :09:14.
100%. The way he was driving on the corner, when we were on the floor | :09:15. | :09:19.
with the old man who was trying, trying to get him CPR... We should | :09:20. | :09:23.
explain, you had come out of the mosque... We came next, where it | :09:24. | :09:29.
happened, coffee, me and my friends were meeting, we saw this man on the | :09:30. | :09:34.
floor, we said let's go and see him... It was completely separate, | :09:35. | :09:38.
an elderly man had collapsed and you were helping him? We were helping | :09:39. | :09:43.
him, there was a little crowd of people. Some people were saying, | :09:44. | :09:47.
maybe he thought there was a mosque, he saw the crowd. That's why he | :09:48. | :09:54.
turned on the corner of it. I don't know how I managed to escape. Can I | :09:55. | :09:58.
ask you one more question, we've heard various reports there were | :09:59. | :10:03.
three people in the van? I could only see one person come out from | :10:04. | :10:09.
the van. He was a big man. Very strong, big man, very strong. That's | :10:10. | :10:14.
why there were other people trying to get him hold... When I tackled | :10:15. | :10:20.
him, we put him on the ground until the police came and thank God, when | :10:21. | :10:24.
the police came, there was still some emotion, with the guys over | :10:25. | :10:33.
him, they were sad, there was a man trying to give CPR, he already was | :10:34. | :10:39.
on the ground and the van, that just made it worse. Can I ask you this | :10:40. | :10:45.
question, do you feel safe on the streets? I don't know, I'm not sure | :10:46. | :10:50.
to be honest with you. If we all come together, we can be safe. | :10:51. | :10:54.
Abdul, thank you very much for talking to us. Incredibly brave man. | :10:55. | :11:00.
To reiterate, the police do now have this man in custody and once he is | :11:01. | :11:05.
released from hospital, they said they will question him. The Home | :11:06. | :11:08.
Secretary Amber Rudd is describing this as a terrorist attack. Back to | :11:09. | :11:10.
you. What a horrible attack, Abdul | :11:11. | :11:23.
talking there about how you he and a group of people tackled this man. He | :11:24. | :11:28.
is now in custody, he is being treated in hospital, police will | :11:29. | :11:32.
question him shortly. He wasn't alone, incredibly brave stories we | :11:33. | :11:34.
are hearing from people who were there last night. Graham Satchel | :11:35. | :11:40.
mentioned Amber Rudd, a short time ago she gave her reaction. | :11:41. | :11:44.
Unfortunately we have again woken up to another terrible incident in | :11:45. | :11:49.
London for a man has taken hold of a van and driven it into a group of | :11:50. | :11:53.
innocent people instance we park. There is one fatality that we know | :11:54. | :11:58.
about and a number of casualties, and the police are treating it as a | :11:59. | :12:04.
terrorist incident. We know police -- we know police were on hand | :12:05. | :12:08.
immediately and are treating it as a suspected terrorist event and that | :12:09. | :12:12.
is a normal procedure, we will see whether they confirmed that later | :12:13. | :12:16.
this morning. It was treated immediately as a suspected terrorist | :12:17. | :12:19.
attack, we must allow the police to deal with the facts and they will | :12:20. | :12:23.
make sure they make those facts available as soon as they can. Our | :12:24. | :12:26.
priority must be to support the people who have even the victims of | :12:27. | :12:31.
this and to make sure the investigation is done with all due | :12:32. | :12:34.
speed and professionalism. We are concerned about everybody, you know, | :12:35. | :12:39.
Londoners have been hit with a series of attacks and have been | :12:40. | :12:45.
nothing short of heroic. We will always make sure that everybody is | :12:46. | :12:49.
protected, we have a places of worship fund of which we announced | :12:50. | :12:53.
last summer which is there to protect places of worship like | :12:54. | :12:57.
mosques and we will make sure we do all we can to reduce these sort of | :12:58. | :13:01.
attacks. The Prime Minister Wiltshire Cobra later today, we will | :13:02. | :13:06.
allow police and the counterterrorism police involved to | :13:07. | :13:08.
make sure the investigation continues and we will continue to | :13:09. | :13:12.
keep people aware of what progress has been made. When we speak to | :13:13. | :13:16.
emergency services during this series of attacks we always ask them | :13:17. | :13:21.
for additional support they need. Actually they have generally | :13:22. | :13:24.
confirmed to us, I spoke to a number of them over the weekend recently, | :13:25. | :13:27.
that they do have sufficient resources because there's a of | :13:28. | :13:32.
mutual aid of works, people supporting each other, that went to | :13:33. | :13:35.
help people in Manchester, that helps people in London and its | :13:36. | :13:40.
working but we will always keep it under review to ensure that | :13:41. | :13:42.
emergency services have all the support they need so that they can | :13:43. | :13:47.
support the communities affected. That was the Home Secretary Amber | :13:48. | :13:50.
Rudd, we may interrupt whatever we are doing in the next few is, we | :13:51. | :13:55.
expect a from New Scotland Yard, bear that in mind if you are | :13:56. | :13:56.
watching us. Let's get the latest | :13:57. | :14:14.
from our Political Correspondent, We are getting used to this, | :14:15. | :14:25.
unfortunately, the government involved in a Cobra committing -- | :14:26. | :14:30.
committee meeting. The Prime Minister chairing that in the coming | :14:31. | :14:34.
hours, she released a statement in the middle of the night saying there | :14:35. | :14:37.
would be a Cobra committee meeting this morning, what tends to happen | :14:38. | :14:42.
is that such meetings involve senior ministers at a government level, | :14:43. | :14:47.
senior officials and civil servants, often the police and intelligence | :14:48. | :14:50.
agencies are represented as well. We expect that to happen this morning. | :14:51. | :14:54.
Some further reaction to bring you in the last couple of minutes from | :14:55. | :14:58.
the Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn but also crucially, the local MP in | :14:59. | :15:03.
Finsbury Park, saying he was shocked by this horrific and cruel attack in | :15:04. | :15:06.
Finsbury Park which is being treated as an act of terror. He offered his | :15:07. | :15:11.
condolences to the family and friends of the man who died and | :15:12. | :15:14.
those who have been injured, he says as the local MP is met with Muslim | :15:15. | :15:18.
community leaders at the muslin well for house alongside the leader of | :15:19. | :15:23.
this into an counsel Richard Watts, the council Chief Executive and the | :15:24. | :15:27.
Metropolitan Police, he adds Mr Watts, the council leader and Mr | :15:28. | :15:30.
Corbyn will attend prayers at things we Park mosque later today. We are | :15:31. | :15:35.
watching pictures while we talk to you, in fact we are expecting a | :15:36. | :15:40.
statement from New Scotland Yard from police there in the next few | :15:41. | :15:43.
minutes. We have heard there are calls for extra police and the Mayor | :15:44. | :15:49.
of London, city can say The Met had deployed extra police to reassure | :15:50. | :15:51.
communities especially those observing Ramadan. Clearly the | :15:52. | :15:57.
police are under a huge amount of pressure across the UK but | :15:58. | :16:01.
articulate in London, with the recent terror attacks and the tower | :16:02. | :16:06.
block fire last week. The Mayor of London Sadiq Khan provide an | :16:07. | :16:09.
extensive statement on Facebook over night saying he had spoken to the | :16:10. | :16:14.
Metropolitan Police as you would expect, extra police being deployed | :16:15. | :16:18.
to reassure communities especially those observing Ramadan and you | :16:19. | :16:22.
heard in that interview with the Home Secretary, questions about | :16:23. | :16:25.
police resources, she says they tell her they have adequate money, | :16:26. | :16:30.
adequate resources, adequate manpower to deal with the challenges | :16:31. | :16:34.
they face at the moment because of this system of mutual aid, forces | :16:35. | :16:38.
will lend people to other forces when a particular force in a | :16:39. | :16:42.
particular area is facing a particular pressure. But you can | :16:43. | :16:45.
imagine the extent to which that will become a pressing political | :16:46. | :16:48.
issue in the next few weeks, you have seen a different Jeremy Corbyn | :16:49. | :16:52.
is in his response to the tower block fire, resources to the urgency | :16:53. | :17:00.
services, given the they are under, will lead to a rise... Chris Mason, | :17:01. | :17:03.
thank you. We may speak to you later. | :17:04. | :17:08.
We are awaiting a police statement from outside New Scotland Yard. We | :17:09. | :17:17.
will return to the scene of that horrific incident which took place | :17:18. | :17:22.
last night outside Finsbury Park. If you're just turning on your | :17:23. | :17:24.
television for the first timement one person has died and eight people | :17:25. | :17:29.
are being treated in three different hospitals after a 48-year-old man | :17:30. | :17:32.
who is in police custody has driven a van into a group of Muslim | :17:33. | :17:37.
worshippers who were outside a mosque around about the seven stars | :17:38. | :17:42.
area in Finsbury Park. There is one mosque on one side of the road and | :17:43. | :17:45.
another on the other side of the road and it was outside one of those | :17:46. | :17:49.
that there was a group of worshippers who had broken their | :17:50. | :17:52.
fast for Ramadan and who had come out from players and that van was | :17:53. | :17:57.
driven into them, killing one and injuring eight. | :17:58. | :18:02.
Let's speak to our Home Affairs Correspondent, Daniel Sanford | :18:03. | :18:04.
who is in Finsbury Park for us this morning. | :18:05. | :18:06.
There is a massive counter-terrorism operation now in place down there. | :18:07. | :18:12.
There is. You can't really see because of the vans in the way, but | :18:13. | :18:18.
on the road just behind us, there are forensic officers already | :18:19. | :18:21.
starting their work trying to pick up any bits of evidence that have | :18:22. | :18:26.
been left behind by this white van as it made its journey towards | :18:27. | :18:30.
killing this man and injuring eight others. Just a little bit on the | :18:31. | :18:35.
geography. It seems as if the incident took place on a street | :18:36. | :18:43.
called Wadcoat Street. It's a dead end street, but it's an area where | :18:44. | :18:48.
during Ramadan the people who spill out of both the mosques that you | :18:49. | :18:51.
were talking about here tend to gather. It's a small dead end | :18:52. | :18:54.
street. People set out portable chairs there and sit and eat | :18:55. | :18:58.
together and chat together. There is a cafe nearby and what happened is | :18:59. | :19:04.
that this white van made its way up in the bus lane, an area not | :19:05. | :19:08.
normally used by normal traffic and then took a sharp left into this | :19:09. | :19:13.
dead end street, ploughing into a group of people waiting between the | :19:14. | :19:17.
first prayers of the night and the second prayers of the night and the | :19:18. | :19:22.
man who was apparently driving that van was grabbed by people there. He | :19:23. | :19:29.
was held in a headlock until police eventually arrived and according to | :19:30. | :19:33.
some witnesses he was saying, "Kill me. Kill me my job is done." The | :19:34. | :19:38.
police say they detained a 48-year-old man. Daniel Sandford, | :19:39. | :19:41.
thank you. We were some of those incredible | :19:42. | :19:48.
accounts, terrifying. One of those grabbed the man out of the white van | :19:49. | :19:52.
and held him on the floor until the police arrived. Yes, with no | :19:53. | :20:00.
thoughts for their own safety. It must have been horrible to have been | :20:01. | :20:05.
involved in that and those eight people who have been injured are | :20:06. | :20:08.
treated in four separate hospitals and the man who was arrested is | :20:09. | :20:11.
being treated in hospital at the moment and police will be | :20:12. | :20:14.
questioning him. We are expecting a police statement. We're not sure of | :20:15. | :20:17.
the timings of the statement, but we've got our camera there. As soon | :20:18. | :20:22.
as it happens we will bring it to you here on BBC Breakfast. We are | :20:23. | :20:26.
trying to keep you up-to-date with other things including the weather | :20:27. | :20:30.
and Carol can tell us how it has been. | :20:31. | :20:33.
Good morning. Yesterday was the warmest day of the year so far. | :20:34. | :20:43.
Today, it is likely to be hotter which is 33 Celsius. | :20:44. | :20:48.
Now, for many of the UK, we are looking, many parts of the UK, it is | :20:49. | :20:51.
going to be sunny. It is going to be hot, but there is an exception and | :20:52. | :20:54.
that's across the far north of Scotland. Here we've got a weather | :20:55. | :20:58.
front so temperatures will be lower, but across many parts of England and | :20:59. | :21:02.
Wales, Southern Scotland, we're looking at highs in the high 20s, or | :21:03. | :21:07.
indeed, for some, the low 30s. Pollen levels today are also very | :21:08. | :21:11.
high more or less across-the-board, the exception being where we have a | :21:12. | :21:14.
weather front and the weather front is producing some rain, but that | :21:15. | :21:17.
rain will fizzle as we go through the day. But as the weather front | :21:18. | :21:22.
sinks south, fresher conditions follow on from behind, but there | :21:23. | :21:26.
will be a lot of sunshine. Strong sunshine, UV levels, are very high | :21:27. | :21:30.
across many parts particularly the south today as well. So these are | :21:31. | :21:34.
the kind of temperature values you can expect. Inland, we're looking up | :21:35. | :21:38.
to 33 Celsius. Along the coast, it will be cooler with sea breezes | :21:39. | :21:42.
developing. There is a chance we could see the odd shower develop too | :21:43. | :21:46.
across eastern and central England. It could be thundery, but most of us | :21:47. | :21:52.
will miss them. There is a higher risk across Southern Scotland and | :21:53. | :21:55.
Northern Ireland, but here you will be unlucky if you catch one. The | :21:56. | :21:59.
rain across the north does continued to fizzle leaving cloud in its wake. | :22:00. | :22:02.
One or two showers for Northern Ireland, but most missing them. Most | :22:03. | :22:05.
staying dry with highs into the high teens. Then we're back into | :22:06. | :22:11.
temperatures in the 20s. We're going to interrupt you. The police | :22:12. | :22:17.
statement Sadly, Londoners are waking up to the news of another | :22:18. | :22:20.
dreadful incident in the capital that has left a number of people | :22:21. | :22:25.
seriously injured. The attack unfolded whilst a man was already | :22:26. | :22:29.
receiving first aid from public at the scene and sadly that man has | :22:30. | :22:35.
died. Any causative link between his death and the attack will form part | :22:36. | :22:39.
of our investigation. It is too early to state if his death was as a | :22:40. | :22:46.
result of this attack. Our thoughts, are absolutely with all of those | :22:47. | :22:51.
affected by the inside at Seven Sisters Road and their family, | :22:52. | :22:54.
friends and the wider community. No matter what the motivation for this | :22:55. | :22:58.
attack proves to be, we are keeping an open mind. This is being treated | :22:59. | :23:02.
as a terrorist attack and the Counter Terrorism Command is | :23:03. | :23:07.
investigating. This was an attack on London and all Londoners and we | :23:08. | :23:11.
should all stand together against extremists whatever their cause. | :23:12. | :23:16.
From 21 minutes past midnight this morning, police received a number of | :23:17. | :23:21.
calls to Seven Sisters Road following a van having collided with | :23:22. | :23:26.
pedestrians. Officers were in the vicinity at the time. Actually as | :23:27. | :23:31.
the attack unfolded and they responded instantly. Additional | :23:32. | :23:35.
officers were on scene within ten minutes. One man, as I've said, was | :23:36. | :23:41.
pronounced dead add the scene. Eight others are in hospital and two more | :23:42. | :23:46.
were treated at the scene. All the victims were from the Muslim | :23:47. | :23:52.
community. I'd like to prays the police officers who immediately | :23:53. | :23:54.
responded who gave life-saving treatment at the scene, but also | :23:55. | :23:58.
very much those members of the public who assisted before and after | :23:59. | :24:04.
this incident. Also at the scene detained by members of that | :24:05. | :24:07.
community was the man suspected of being the driver during this attack. | :24:08. | :24:12.
He has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. I would like to | :24:13. | :24:18.
thank those people who helped police in detaining the man and worked with | :24:19. | :24:23.
officers to calmly and quickly get him into our custodiment their | :24:24. | :24:25.
restraint in the circumstances is commendable. This investigation is | :24:26. | :24:30.
ongoing and we are working fast to know the full details of how and why | :24:31. | :24:36.
it took place. At this early stage of the investigation, no other | :24:37. | :24:39.
suspects have been identified or reported to police. And there were | :24:40. | :24:43.
no reports of any people having suffered any knife injuries. The van | :24:44. | :24:49.
used has been examined by specialist officers, but nothing that would | :24:50. | :24:53.
cause a risk to the public was found within it. Extra policing resources | :24:54. | :24:58.
have been deployed across London in order to reassure communities | :24:59. | :25:01.
especially those observing Ramadan at this very sensitive time. I would | :25:02. | :25:08.
urge everyone to remain calm and remain vigilant. I ask the public | :25:09. | :25:13.
with any information about this incident or anything, that causes | :25:14. | :25:22.
them concern or suspicion to call the police on 0800789321. | :25:23. | :25:27.
Obviously this is a very early stage of the investigation. However, as | :25:28. | :25:31.
and when I can make more information available, I will. This has been an | :25:32. | :25:37.
incredibly challenging tile for London and the emergency services | :25:38. | :25:41.
are stretched. Nevertheless, we will all do absolutely everything we can | :25:42. | :25:45.
with our partners to protect Londoners and our city. Now is a | :25:46. | :25:50.
time once again for London to stand together to face those who seek to | :25:51. | :25:55.
divide us. Thank you. I can take a couple of questions. | :25:56. | :25:59.
REPORTER: Was this immediately considered a terrorist attack? Given | :26:00. | :26:03.
the methodology and given what was occurring and what happened across | :26:04. | :26:06.
the country, this had all the hallmarks of a terrorist incident. | :26:07. | :26:09.
That's why the Counter Terrorism Command were called out to | :26:10. | :26:12.
investigate. REPORTER: Can you give us more | :26:13. | :26:15.
details on how the suspect was detained by members of the public? | :26:16. | :26:19.
What actually happened? There has been a lot of images put out by the | :26:20. | :26:23.
media as and when he was detained. It seems to me at the time he was | :26:24. | :26:27.
quickly and calmly given over to the police and put into custody. I think | :26:28. | :26:31.
as I've said I think that was commendable by members of the | :26:32. | :26:35.
community who must have been incredibly shaken and incredibly | :26:36. | :26:38.
scared and incredibly angry and I'd like to thank them and what it | :26:39. | :26:42.
proves to me is Londoners will act together to protect themselves, but | :26:43. | :26:45.
they will do so in a way that doesn't feed into terrorist and | :26:46. | :26:49.
extremists hands. Can you give us anymore details about how serious | :26:50. | :26:52.
the injuries are those to in hospital? No, it's too early to say | :26:53. | :26:57.
and the hospital and NHS England will be updating later on the | :26:58. | :27:01.
condition of the casualties. At least two are very serious. Again, | :27:02. | :27:06.
our thoughts go out to the families and their friends who must be very | :27:07. | :27:13.
shaken at this time. INAUDIBLE | :27:14. | :27:18.
Have they been able to integrate him? That will be a priority of our | :27:19. | :27:23.
investigation. As soon as he is in our custody and been through our | :27:24. | :27:28.
formal custody procedures, he will be questioned as part of the | :27:29. | :27:34.
investigation. . Eyewitnesses said they saw other people running away | :27:35. | :27:43.
after the attack. INAUDIBLE | :27:44. | :27:45.
Right, let me be very clear at this time. That was obviously a very key | :27:46. | :27:50.
line of inquiry for us right at the start of this investigation. From | :27:51. | :27:53.
what we are seeing and from witnesses are reporting to us, there | :27:54. | :27:57.
was nobody else in the van and it appears at this time this attacker | :27:58. | :28:02.
attacked alone. That's not to say that we are not investigating the | :28:03. | :28:06.
full circumstances of how he came to be where he was and at this point in | :28:07. | :28:09.
time there was nobody else in the van. | :28:10. | :28:11.
Thank you very much, ladies and gentlemen, thank you. | :28:12. | :28:15.
That's a statement from the police. Just to give you a summary really. | :28:16. | :28:19.
They are saying it's too early to say if the man who died was as a | :28:20. | :28:24.
result of the attack. It is being treated as a terrorist attack and he | :28:25. | :28:28.
went don't to say that it was an attack on London and all Londoners. | :28:29. | :28:35.
Yes, he said, that was deputy Deputy Assistant Commissioner. He said | :28:36. | :28:38.
interestingly that there were officers on the scene immediately | :28:39. | :28:42.
giving emergency care as well. Others arrived on the scene within | :28:43. | :28:45.
ten minutes. He confirmed that all victims were from the Muslim | :28:46. | :28:49.
community, one died at the scene. Eight others are being treated in | :28:50. | :28:52.
hospital and he did say as well, you might of caught that at the end that | :28:53. | :28:56.
two of the eight are in what he called a very serious condition. He | :28:57. | :28:59.
went out of his way, didn't he, to praise members of the public because | :29:00. | :29:02.
we have been hearing from them all morning saying how they helped to | :29:03. | :29:07.
detain this man and he particularly praised them for the bravery and | :29:08. | :29:11.
also for the restraint under the circumstances which he said was | :29:12. | :29:17.
commendable. And also saying it's an incredibly challenging time for | :29:18. | :29:19.
London. We have been hearing this morning and speaking to number of | :29:20. | :29:25.
people at the scene and to the Muslim Council of Britain saying how | :29:26. | :29:27.
there is fear in the community and he says there will be extra | :29:28. | :29:30.
resources across London being deployed particularly at this time | :29:31. | :29:33.
when Muslims will be observing Ramadan. We will have more in the | :29:34. | :29:37.
next few minutes. It is time to get the news, the travel | :29:38. | :29:39.
next few minutes. It is time to get later. A high 32 Celsius. | :29:40. | :32:58.
Hello, this is Breakfast with Louise Minchin and Dan Walker. | :32:59. | :33:11.
One man has been killed and eight people have been taken to hospital, | :33:12. | :33:17.
after a van drove into a crowd of pedestrians near | :33:18. | :33:19.
In the last few minutes the Metropolitan police said the | :33:20. | :33:27.
incident has all the hallmarks of a terrorist attack. The Prime Minister | :33:28. | :33:33.
will chair a meeting of the emergency Cobra committee later this | :33:34. | :33:34.
morning. Breakfast's Graham Satchell | :33:35. | :33:36.
is in Finsbury Park Hearing so many eyewitness accounts. | :33:37. | :33:45.
So many people saw what happened, didn't they? Good morning. Yes, | :33:46. | :33:52.
there is a whole crowd of people here. I'm going to talk to one | :33:53. | :33:57.
person who was here overnight, Abdel-Rahman. Can you tell us what | :33:58. | :34:05.
you saw? What I saw was a horrible attack on innocent people this | :34:06. | :34:11.
morning. There was an old man laying down on the floor, I think you had a | :34:12. | :34:16.
heart attack. This was before the attack happened? Yes, a man on the | :34:17. | :34:22.
floor. Me and my friends were going to meet for a coffee after prayer. | :34:23. | :34:32.
We went to help them, give him CPR. We circled him. Within minutes, this | :34:33. | :34:40.
horrible man who was driving at speed, just turned on us and went | :34:41. | :34:44.
over the people. He drove straight into you? He drove straight into us, | :34:45. | :34:53.
yes. I managed to put my head up. I survived, thank God. Other people, | :34:54. | :34:58.
my friends, got hurt. I was in hospital. I am praying they get | :34:59. | :35:03.
better. My condolences to the old man, to his family. What happened | :35:04. | :35:15.
next? There was an injection. We rented him. Before he can drive | :35:16. | :35:23.
back, reverse. He came out and he tried to run. He came back my way. I | :35:24. | :35:31.
took on to the floor. I held him on the ground. Me and other people as | :35:32. | :35:39.
well. Until police came. You tackled him on the floor? Tackled him on the | :35:40. | :35:46.
floor until the police came. What was he saying? He said he wanted to | :35:47. | :35:52.
kill more people, he wanted to kill more Muslims. I asked him why he was | :35:53. | :35:57.
doing this. I said, you're trying to kill innocent people, why? He wanted | :35:58. | :36:03.
a kill more Muslims. He said, kill me. I asked him again, there are | :36:04. | :36:09.
innocent people underneath the van. I was trying to hold on ground. | :36:10. | :36:15.
There were other people running to pull the van. The Home Secretary has | :36:16. | :36:21.
called this a terrorist attack. How would you describe it? Yes, I would | :36:22. | :36:26.
describe it the same thing as they did. It was deliberately meant to | :36:27. | :36:31.
attack innocent people. Whoever attacks innocent people, whether | :36:32. | :36:37.
Muslim or non-Muslim, if you are going to harm innocent people, there | :36:38. | :36:44.
is only a terror person who will do that. You are a very brave man. Well | :36:45. | :36:51.
done. Thank you. Abdel-Rahman, who was part of the | :36:52. | :36:56.
group who tackled this man. I wouldn't -- say undoubtedly helped | :36:57. | :37:00.
to save lives. We do know that one man has died and a people are in | :37:01. | :37:04.
hospital. The driver of the van is also in hospital. But he is in | :37:05. | :37:08.
police custody. He will be questioned as soon as he is | :37:09. | :37:12.
released. We will be back with grey men a few | :37:13. | :37:17.
minutes. We have been hearing as well from the police. We heard from | :37:18. | :37:25.
the deputy assistant commissioner. The attack on folded twice a man was | :37:26. | :37:30.
already receiving first aid from the public at the scene. Sadly that man | :37:31. | :37:36.
has died. Any causative link between his death and the attack will form | :37:37. | :37:40.
part of our investigation. It is too early to say that his death was as a | :37:41. | :37:46.
result of this attack. Our frauds are absolutely with all of those | :37:47. | :37:49.
affected by the incident at seven sisters Rd. -- our thoughts. And the | :37:50. | :37:56.
families, friends and wider community. No matter what the | :37:57. | :37:59.
motivation for this attack proves to be, we are keeping an open mind. | :38:00. | :38:04.
This is being treated as a terrorist attack. The Counter Terrorism | :38:05. | :38:08.
Command is investigating. This was an attack on London and all | :38:09. | :38:11.
Londoners. We should all stand together against extremists, | :38:12. | :38:17.
whatever their cause. From 21 minutes past midnight this morning, | :38:18. | :38:19.
police received a number of calls to seven Sisters Rd following a van | :38:20. | :38:26.
having collided with pedestrians. Officers were in the immediate | :38:27. | :38:31.
vicinity at the time, actually as the attack unfolded, and they | :38:32. | :38:34.
responded instantly. Additional officers were on scene within ten | :38:35. | :38:40.
minutes. One man was pronounced dead at the scene. Eight others are in | :38:41. | :38:46.
hospital. And two more were treated at the scene. All of the victims | :38:47. | :38:50.
were from the Muslim community. I would like to praise the police | :38:51. | :38:54.
officers who immediately responded, who gave life-saving treatment at | :38:55. | :38:58.
the scene. But also, very much those members of the public who assisted | :38:59. | :39:04.
before and after this incident. That was the latest statement from | :39:05. | :39:08.
the police. They say the man they have arrested has been arrested on | :39:09. | :39:11.
suspicion of attempted murder. We have heard these extraordinary | :39:12. | :39:16.
accounts this morning at how they managed to tackle this man and help | :39:17. | :39:20.
the police. The police very much saying, thank you for your support. | :39:21. | :39:25.
They were talking about the commendable restraint in the | :39:26. | :39:28.
circumstances. We will be speaking to the Muslim | :39:29. | :39:33.
Council of Britain in a moment. Extra resources across London | :39:34. | :39:37.
deployed for those who have been observing Ramadan. We want to talk | :39:38. | :39:38.
about security issues. Police say nobody else was in the | :39:39. | :39:57.
van. What can you tell us about what we do know? Welcome at the moment it | :39:58. | :40:06.
is very limited. Whatever information that is coming through | :40:07. | :40:11.
at the moment is fairly sketchy. It is from a variety of sources. I have | :40:12. | :40:15.
spoken to some of the locals. Various conflicting reports. All I | :40:16. | :40:19.
can draw from my analysis of the situation is this was well planned, | :40:20. | :40:23.
this was intended to cause as much harm as possible. And therefore, I | :40:24. | :40:28.
think it is very clear it is obviously a terrorist attack. But by | :40:29. | :40:33.
whom? Ultimately the group or individual this person has been | :40:34. | :40:38.
inspired by his plane directly into the Islamic State and extremist | :40:39. | :40:41.
agenda, who have taken credit for many of these attacks we have seen | :40:42. | :40:47.
of late. With your expertise, what makes you think it was well-planned | :40:48. | :40:54.
particularly? It is particularly the time the | :40:55. | :40:57.
actual attack has taken place. We are in the period of Ramadan. | :40:58. | :41:01.
Inevitably those following Ramadan are fasting during daylight hours. | :41:02. | :41:07.
It is after daylight hours they will be able to go to worship, eat and | :41:08. | :41:12.
break their past. This was a perfect opportunity for that person with mal | :41:13. | :41:18.
intent to have the largest congregation of locals in one | :41:19. | :41:21.
vicinity, particularly outside this particular location. There were | :41:22. | :41:26.
congregated in the street, therefore with a vehicle, as we have seen on | :41:27. | :41:30.
many different attacks in the past, it is very easy for them to take as | :41:31. | :41:34.
many casualties and fatalities as they can. | :41:35. | :41:38.
We know this particular man is in police custody. What will their | :41:39. | :41:46.
priorities be, the police? Well, the really important thing is that he | :41:47. | :41:49.
has been taken alive. That is fantastically useful for the | :41:50. | :41:54.
authorities in their subsequent interviews of him. He is apparently | :41:55. | :41:59.
being medically treated. That is standard. For many reasons that has | :42:00. | :42:04.
to be done to ensure he is robust enough to be able to be interviewed | :42:05. | :42:06.
as quickly as possible, to try and determine if there are are any | :42:07. | :42:11.
others who can be connected to him, could be part of a larger cell | :42:12. | :42:15.
group. And get as much valuable intelligence as possible. It will be | :42:16. | :42:21.
not just the standard passes as we hear so much about the wake of | :42:22. | :42:26.
terrorist events, where it is looking at non-associates, cellular | :42:27. | :42:29.
footprint, digital footprint, no doubt going to his residence and | :42:30. | :42:34.
those nearing to determine what they can, but having the suspect actually | :42:35. | :42:40.
alive is very valuable. Extra police forces have been deployed across | :42:41. | :42:43.
London but how can you protect members of the public from this kind | :42:44. | :42:48.
of attack? This is the massive challenge right now. And again, this | :42:49. | :42:53.
is something which will require a lot of deep thinking. There are | :42:54. | :42:56.
certain security measures that have been developed over time to protect | :42:57. | :43:05.
against hostile vehicles. They include ramps blockades. All kinds | :43:06. | :43:08.
of street furniture that can be deployed. But ultimately, this also | :43:09. | :43:14.
has to consider potentially be re-architecture and read planning of | :43:15. | :43:17.
certain areas, particularly where there could be a large pedestrian | :43:18. | :43:22.
footfall. There are thousands if not millions of cars on the road every | :43:23. | :43:27.
day in the United Kingdom. We need to address this pragmatically. Be | :43:28. | :43:32.
careful not to be knee jerk in our reaction. Thankfully, at this stage, | :43:33. | :43:35.
the attacks of terrorist euthanising vehicles, causing harm to the | :43:36. | :43:40.
general public, are still much lower than those created by cars in an | :43:41. | :43:45.
everyday sense. That is not to say this wasn't an horrific attack and | :43:46. | :43:48.
there shouldn't be measures put in place. But it has to be thought | :43:49. | :43:52.
through very carefully. Will Geddis, thank you very indeed. | :43:53. | :43:58.
Let's get some more reaction to the main story now. Joining us from our | :43:59. | :44:03.
London newsroom is the assistant secretary of the Muslim Council of | :44:04. | :44:10.
Britain. Thank you for your time. I appreciate you holding on. Listening | :44:11. | :44:13.
to the Metropolitan police and our security effort -- expert. Can I ask | :44:14. | :44:18.
you for your reaction to this awful news? I think we are all shocked at | :44:19. | :44:24.
what has happened. This has affected Muslim communities near that mask, | :44:25. | :44:28.
Muslim Welfare House across the country. This is something that is | :44:29. | :44:36.
shocking. The fact that it might happen at other gatherings across | :44:37. | :44:40.
the country. Muslims are gathering every single evening to break their | :44:41. | :44:44.
fast and for the night prior that happened in this situation. That | :44:45. | :44:47.
will be continuing every day. People have already raised serious concerns | :44:48. | :44:53.
over their safety and the fear this might happen again. That is why we | :44:54. | :44:58.
welcome very much what the Metropolitan police and a Sadiq can | :44:59. | :45:02.
have said, that there will be extra policing to reassure people. That is | :45:03. | :45:08.
what we need right now. We have been hearing from several eyewitnesses | :45:09. | :45:12.
and people from your organisation as well, talking about the fact that | :45:13. | :45:16.
Muslims field deliberately targeted. There is genuine fear? Very much so. | :45:17. | :45:22.
Many Muslim communities for a long time have felt the rise in hate | :45:23. | :45:26.
crime against Muslims is a reality that has been under reported, | :45:27. | :45:31.
misunderstood and not dealt with in the same way against -- as bigotry | :45:32. | :45:36.
against other communities. This is a transformative moment where | :45:37. | :45:39.
hopefully this will mean that action will be taken to tackle hate crime, | :45:40. | :45:44.
and that the rise in hate crime against Muslims taking place in | :45:45. | :45:48.
recent years that has reached a worrying situation yesterday. | :45:49. | :45:54.
What can be done to stop something like this? We are hearing from the | :45:55. | :46:01.
Met police there will be extra resources across London, | :46:02. | :46:04.
particularly during Ramadan but what will make a difference? We have to | :46:05. | :46:09.
be careful about any knee jerk reaction. It is good there will be | :46:10. | :46:13.
extra police to reassure people. I think there needs to be a range of | :46:14. | :46:17.
things looked at, starting from the way that many of these individuals, | :46:18. | :46:21.
far right individuals are spreading hate and he is seen as acceptable in | :46:22. | :46:34.
many parts of society. Baroness Seder while they talked about how | :46:35. | :46:36.
Islamophobia has passed the dinner table test. People seem to be able | :46:37. | :46:39.
to talk about hatred of Muslims without people calling it out that | :46:40. | :46:43.
is unacceptable and needs to stop. We have a situation now where people | :46:44. | :46:50.
think Islam is a threat to Western civilisation. These far right | :46:51. | :46:54.
extremists peddle their hatred and in some sections of the far right | :46:55. | :46:59.
and in the media they create this atmosphere of hostility which is | :47:00. | :47:04.
very dangerous and needs to be tackled right now. We have heard | :47:05. | :47:07.
from many others mentioning that incidents like this play into the | :47:08. | :47:13.
hands of the likes of Islamic State. That is very true. There are people | :47:14. | :47:17.
out there, whether it is the far right or people who claim to be | :47:18. | :47:21.
Muslims committing acts of terror, who want to divide us and create | :47:22. | :47:25.
hatred. This was not just an attack on Muslims, this was an attack on | :47:26. | :47:29.
our society. We care about tolerance. As British people we care | :47:30. | :47:33.
about tolerance and respect for others. We can see this by the way | :47:34. | :47:47.
our Prime Minister, the Home Secretary, the Mayor of London and | :47:48. | :47:51.
police have reacted in a swift, powerful way. This is a terror | :47:52. | :47:53.
attack which will not be tolerated. We hope the precursors of this will | :47:54. | :47:56.
be looked at good to talk to, thank you. The words of the Muslim Council | :47:57. | :47:59.
of Britain were echoed by the Assistant Commissioner of the Met | :48:00. | :48:01.
police sent this was an attack on all of Britain and all of London. | :48:02. | :48:06.
We will keep you up-to-date on but shortly. Carol has a look at this | :48:07. | :48:11.
morning's weather for us. Good morning. It is already a hot | :48:12. | :48:28.
start to the day. It is much cooler in Inverness where we have a weather | :48:29. | :48:33.
front and also some rain. The other thing about today's bee pollen | :48:34. | :48:36.
levels will be very high almost across the board except for where we | :48:37. | :48:40.
have that weather front. The UV levels are about as high as they get | :48:41. | :48:45.
in the UK. Do bear that in mind. Here is the weather front producing | :48:46. | :48:50.
rain across the north-west of the UK. The rain will fizzle as we go | :48:51. | :48:57.
through the day. For the rest of us it will be a dry and hot one. Inland | :48:58. | :49:05.
it will be hopped along the shoreline there will be seen | :49:06. | :49:11.
breezes. -- inland, it will be hopped, along the shoreline there | :49:12. | :49:15.
will be seen breezes. It will be warmer than Miami. There is the risk | :49:16. | :49:24.
of afternoon showers across northern England, southern Scotland and | :49:25. | :49:26.
Northern Ireland. These could prove to be thundery but we will not all | :49:27. | :49:32.
see them. The rain fades across the far north of Scotland. There will be | :49:33. | :49:36.
more cloud cover in Northern Ireland as our weather front sinks south. | :49:37. | :49:40.
Then we're back into the hot sunshine across Wales. As we head on | :49:41. | :49:45.
through the evening and overnight, many of the thundery showers will | :49:46. | :49:50.
tend to fade. There will be a lot of dry weather around. There will be | :49:51. | :49:54.
more cloud coming in across eastern parts of England. It will be another | :49:55. | :50:01.
sultry night as well. Pressure conditions across the northern half | :50:02. | :50:13.
of the UK. -- fresher conditions. Tomorrow there will be a good 10 | :50:14. | :50:14.
degrees drop. It will store the hot across many | :50:15. | :50:31.
areas. Through the latter part of the day we are likely to see some | :50:32. | :50:37.
heat showers sparked off, across South Wales and south-west England. | :50:38. | :50:40.
Those could be sharp. As we head into Wednesday, rain in the north | :50:41. | :50:44.
but the heat starts to pump up again from the south. | :50:45. | :50:51.
Thank you, Carol. We are live on the BBC News Channel as well. This is in | :50:52. | :50:59.
response to what happened in Finsbury Park overnight. We have | :51:00. | :51:02.
heard that no one else was in the van when it attacked. One man alone | :51:03. | :51:06.
has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after this attack | :51:07. | :51:13.
on worshippers at Finsbury Park to staff the -- just after midnight. We | :51:14. | :51:20.
are hearing from the Metropolitan Police the two people are in very | :51:21. | :51:24.
serious condition. We also hear police were on the scene immediately | :51:25. | :51:28.
and further police arrived ten minutes later as well. As yet, we | :51:29. | :51:35.
know this man is in hospital himself, the 48-year-old who has | :51:36. | :51:40.
been arrested, and he will be questioned by police as well who are | :51:41. | :51:44.
looking at this as a major terrorist incident and counterterrorism | :51:45. | :51:46.
officers are on the street at the moment. There is a large police | :51:47. | :51:51.
operation still ongoing this morning. | :51:52. | :51:59.
Also today, Brexit negotiations begin in Brussels. Steph is at a | :52:00. | :52:03.
wholesale market in Manchester to see how businesses feel about the | :52:04. | :52:08.
whole process. Good morning. Lots of people I have | :52:09. | :52:12.
talked to have talked about the uncertainty. That is a big thing for | :52:13. | :52:18.
them. This is a business which trades on how consumer spending is | :52:19. | :52:22.
going. This is a wholesale market so lots of people coming to buy stuff | :52:23. | :52:27.
for local restaurants and shops. They are bothered about whether | :52:28. | :52:29.
people will be spending in the shops and what does it mean for the prices | :52:30. | :52:33.
of the things because we have seen with the currency markets, and the | :52:34. | :52:37.
pound falling, that has put pressure on prices for some of the products | :52:38. | :52:49.
they sell. What do all these negotiations mean? What will the | :52:50. | :52:51.
next two years look like? We have a chief economist at KPMG. Just | :52:52. | :52:55.
explain the process now. There will be essentially three stages. The | :52:56. | :53:01.
first one is the exit negotiations, ie the divorce. Then it is a | :53:02. | :53:06.
relationship in the future, the long term relationship between the UK and | :53:07. | :53:10.
EU. And quite possibly a transitional arrangement to take us | :53:11. | :53:13.
from one state to the other. If you're looking at the divorce | :53:14. | :53:18.
element of this, what does it look like? And there will be quite a few | :53:19. | :53:31.
things which need to be negotiated. There will be a citizens rights | :53:32. | :53:34.
issue, the rights of UK nationals in the EU and EU nationals in the UK. | :53:35. | :53:37.
There will be a financial settlement which will cost the UK about ?48 | :53:38. | :53:39.
billion, there will be legal issues like property rights and there will | :53:40. | :53:45.
be border issues into ticket, the border between Northern Ireland and | :53:46. | :53:50.
the Republic of Ireland. -- in particular the border between | :53:51. | :53:53.
Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. And there will be security | :53:54. | :53:58.
issues which need to be coordinated. I spoke to women who said there are | :53:59. | :54:04.
so mini elements to this, there are all the little things that need to | :54:05. | :54:09.
be thought of that. Absolutely, when you look at the future, there will | :54:10. | :54:16.
be the relationship in terms of the entry to the single market in terms | :54:17. | :54:20.
of goods and services which will need to be negotiated sector by | :54:21. | :54:24.
sector, and even product by-product. Then there is the future | :54:25. | :54:31.
contribution to the EU. There will be regulation by regulation, and we | :54:32. | :54:39.
are unlikely to get an off-the-shelf agreement. And in the meantime | :54:40. | :54:43.
businesses like these ones have to carry on. Is it a worry all of this? | :54:44. | :54:50.
That represents quite a lot of uncertainty for businesses and | :54:51. | :54:54.
households. We have already seen the UK economy slowing quite | :54:55. | :54:57.
significantly in the first quarter of this year, said the worry is this | :54:58. | :55:03.
increased uncertainty will put more downward pressure on growth in the | :55:04. | :55:08.
short to medium term. Thank you for your time. I will get out of the way | :55:09. | :55:14.
because I am in the way here! It is certainly very busy. That is it from | :55:15. | :55:16.
me. Thank you. Let's return to our main | :55:17. | :55:24.
story and an attack close to a mosque in the Finsbury Park area of | :55:25. | :55:28.
London this morning. We know one man has died, eight people are being | :55:29. | :55:32.
treated in hospital and two of those have very serious injuries. In the | :55:33. | :55:36.
last half an hour we have heard from the Met police describing the | :55:37. | :55:40.
incident as having all the hallmarks of a terrorist attack. The Prime | :55:41. | :55:46.
Minister says she will chair an emergency Cobra meeting this | :55:47. | :55:48.
morning. We know all the victims were from the Muslim community. This | :55:49. | :55:55.
man describes the moment the van struck the pedestrians. It turned | :55:56. | :56:02.
left with no indication, suddenly, deliberately and struck the people. | :56:03. | :56:07.
One of them was under the van. We were gathered around the van to lift | :56:08. | :56:12.
the van up to get the guy out from underneath. Two literally ran. As | :56:13. | :56:22.
soon as this happened there was shouting and the people were | :56:23. | :56:25.
gathered around. Two RAM, one got arrested. He was shouting, I want to | :56:26. | :56:35.
kill all Muslims, literally, he said that, word by word, he said it like | :56:36. | :56:43.
this. And then I'm sure, guys, this is a terrorist attack, whether he is | :56:44. | :56:49.
as limb or a Christian. This is a terrorist attack. Tomorrow, I don't | :56:50. | :56:57.
want to see it saying he has mental issues, this is not acceptable. | :56:58. | :57:00.
Otherwise all terrorists have mental issues. He is categorised as a | :57:01. | :57:04.
terrorist, whether he is a Christian or a Muslim, there is no religion | :57:05. | :57:09.
which belongs to terrorism. Terrorism has no limits. All of them | :57:10. | :57:13.
are terrorists who hurt or harm or kill people. This is terrorism. We | :57:14. | :57:20.
can speak to the chief executive of the Ramadan foundation. The | :57:21. | :57:23.
Metropolitan Police are saying it is being treated as a terrorist | :57:24. | :57:26.
incident and all indications are it seems to have been a deliberate | :57:27. | :57:35.
attack. What is your response? Think what people in the community were | :57:36. | :57:37.
concerned about, when these reports come in, they have to be clear they | :57:38. | :57:42.
have of events to guide them, as events have unfolded it is clear it | :57:43. | :57:47.
was a deliberate attack targeting Muslims who were leaving prayers. | :57:48. | :57:54.
The main mosque Finsbury Park mosque had not finished their prayers when | :57:55. | :57:57.
he started driving towards them. When he saw another mosque five | :57:58. | :58:03.
minutes away, he decided to head into that direction. That is the | :58:04. | :58:07.
Muslim welfare centre on Seven Sisters Road. We have been hearing a | :58:08. | :58:15.
lot of reaction this morning from the Muslim community, we heard from | :58:16. | :58:21.
the Muslim Council of Britain saying the Muslim community would have seen | :58:22. | :58:26.
this coming. They think there is a fear because of heightened tensions | :58:27. | :58:29.
in recent weeks, that something like this was in the pipeline? Yes, | :58:30. | :58:37.
Baroness Warsi did a test on Islamophobia. It does exist. There | :58:38. | :58:42.
is rampant Islamophobia. We have to change the language of division and | :58:43. | :58:45.
replace it with the language of hope. Terrorism is evil, human life | :58:46. | :58:50.
is sacred. The government should be commended. They are taking it very | :58:51. | :58:54.
seriously. The Prime Minister is chairing a Cobra meeting as we speak | :58:55. | :58:58.
and will hopefully speak to the nation shortly. Right now we will | :58:59. | :59:03.
say goodbye to viewers on the BBC News Channel. Thank you for watching | :59:04. | :59:07.
us. Joanna Gosling will have continuing coverage on the BBC News | :59:08. | :59:11.
Channel and BBC Two in just a moment. | :59:12. | :59:17.
We will continue that conversation on BBC One. I know so many people | :59:18. | :59:25.
will still be watching. It was very interesting hearing from the police | :59:26. | :59:29.
commander. He was thanking the community. We understand | :59:30. | :59:33.
eyewitnesses piled in and detained this man. Also saying their | :59:34. | :59:36.
restraint was commendable under the circumstances? I want to commend the | :59:37. | :59:43.
imam of the Muslim welfare centre. He kept people calm as the incident | :59:44. | :59:50.
happened. People are hurting. They are concerned. They want reassurance | :59:51. | :59:54.
from their government. From all of the stuff I have seen already they | :59:55. | :59:58.
are getting that reassurance. The police and government are taking it | :59:59. | :00:02.
seriously. There will be extra resources deployed across London, | :00:03. | :00:08.
particularly during Ramadan. Will allay some fears about security | :00:09. | :00:12.
issues? Yes, as Muslims we have to go to mosque to pray. A lot of | :00:13. | :00:17.
people will be toing and froing from the mosque. To get that safety and | :00:18. | :00:23.
security in London and across the country is very important. I urge | :00:24. | :00:27.
people to remain calm. Don't be divided by these maniacs who want to | :00:28. | :00:32.
cause division. We have talked about how many people say they feel | :00:33. | :00:38.
afraid. Is that something you have seen echoed? Yes, if I was to show | :00:39. | :00:44.
you my timeline, it is full of hatred for people who work | :00:45. | :00:48.
perpetuating this division, who somehow find an excuse for this | :00:49. | :00:52.
violence, in some cases celebrating it. It is just sick. There is a | :00:53. | :00:57.
father who has been killed. There are many people injured. Let's focus | :00:58. | :01:03.
on the individuals involved, support the mass families. I'm sure the | :01:04. | :01:09.
community will do that. How do we change that? How does that stop? I | :01:10. | :01:13.
was talking on another channel and I said how we have two change the | :01:14. | :01:22.
language. Give us some examples? For example, Katie Hopkins, some of the | :01:23. | :01:26.
stuff she put in the Daily Mail. Piers Morgan, in the Daily Mail | :01:27. | :01:32.
again. Let's reflect on that. I'm not saying my community is beyond | :01:33. | :01:36.
criticism but do so in a responsible, respectful way. What is | :01:37. | :01:41.
key from a police point of view, they have been absolutely clear, | :01:42. | :01:45.
this is an attack on London and all Londoners. Absolutely. Again, I just | :01:46. | :01:52.
caution, as I was talking to Muslims at about two o'clock this morning on | :01:53. | :01:57.
the scene, just calm down. Let the police get the full facts. We have | :01:58. | :02:01.
seen it now with the evidence they are putting forward in saying it is | :02:02. | :02:05.
a terrorist attack. The government is taking it seriously. Give them | :02:06. | :02:08.
the space to investigate. If there are other people involved I'm | :02:09. | :02:15.
certain they will find them. It is impossible to remain calm when | :02:16. | :02:20.
people are dying, are being murdered, and some people are doing | :02:21. | :02:22.
that in the name of religion, whether right or wrong. Yes, and | :02:23. | :02:28.
there are people doing it in the t:i.d. Is your far right extremism. | :02:29. | :02:32.
People have been at the forefront of dealing with the threat from the | :02:33. | :02:36.
Muslim community. They want to see the same reaction against the far | :02:37. | :02:40.
Right narrative. They have got something in common. They want a | :02:41. | :02:44.
clash of civilisations, they want division. We must not let them | :02:45. | :02:50.
succeed. Tell us about people tonight is going for prayers. Will | :02:51. | :02:53.
they really -- feel reassured by what they have heard today? Yes, I | :02:54. | :02:58.
think a lot of people are waiting to see what the Prime Minister says | :02:59. | :03:02.
Arthur the Cobra meeting. We heard from the Home Secretary. People are | :03:03. | :03:05.
looking to the Prime Minister for some leadership. We have had a | :03:06. | :03:09.
ding-dong of the political stuff in recent weeks but she is our Prime | :03:10. | :03:14.
Minister. It requires strong leadership and I hope she provided. | :03:15. | :03:19.
You confident of the leadership does, crop, there will be a course | :03:20. | :03:23.
that will get us away from this? Absolutely. If we can get the safety | :03:24. | :03:27.
element involved and the right language evolved, and bring people | :03:28. | :03:31.
together, I think we are on the road to dealing with this evil. | :03:32. | :03:35.
Thank you. We have heard from the police in the last half an hour. | :03:36. | :03:39.
This is being treated as a terrorist attack. Officers were there as the | :03:40. | :03:47.
attack unfolded. All victims were from the Muslim community. And | :03:48. | :03:49.
really praise for those people who managed to detain this man who was | :03:50. | :03:55.
in this van and then helped the police actually detain him as well. | :03:56. | :04:00.
They were being praised for their restraint, which we are told was | :04:01. | :04:04.
commendable under the circumstances. That 48-year-old was taken into | :04:05. | :04:08.
police custody. He is in hospital and will be questioned by | :04:09. | :04:11.
counter-terrorism police as well. We know that one man has died and | :04:12. | :04:16.
another a towering hospital. Two of those eight hour in a serious | :04:17. | :04:20.
condition. In a moment we will be back. Now it is the | :04:21. | :05:54.
I'll be back with the lunchtime news at 1.30 on BBC One. | :05:55. | :06:07.
Welcome back to BBC Breakfast. We are talking this morning about the | :06:08. | :06:14.
main news, and horrific incident which has taken place overnight in | :06:15. | :06:17.
London outside a mosque in Finsbury Park. One man has died and eight | :06:18. | :06:21.
people are being treated in hospital. Two in serious condition. | :06:22. | :06:26.
One man has been taken into custody. A 48-year-old. He will be questioned | :06:27. | :06:31.
by counter-terrorism police after apparently driving a white van into | :06:32. | :06:36.
a crowd of people gathered outside a mosque in Finsbury Park. We have | :06:37. | :06:40.
heard extraordinary stories of bravery as those affected by these | :06:41. | :06:45.
-- this incident, some of them managed to detain the man, helped | :06:46. | :06:53.
with the police. We know that members of the public helped to | :06:54. | :06:56.
detain him and helped police to get this man into a van. He has been | :06:57. | :07:01.
taken to hospital, where he is being treated. He will be questioned. He | :07:02. | :07:06.
has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. This incident is | :07:07. | :07:10.
being treated as a terrorist attack. There will be full coverage of this | :07:11. | :07:15.
throughout the day on BBC News and the BBC News channel as well. We | :07:16. | :07:19.
have changed our programme run very much today. But it is now time for | :07:20. | :07:25.
something completely different. Yes, exactly. Completely different. | :07:26. | :07:28.
They're curious and adaptable, but also one of the most elusive | :07:29. | :07:31.
Now, a new BBC Two documentary, has captured the mischievous | :07:32. | :07:34.
and wild encounters of otters - both on land and below the water. | :07:35. | :07:37.
The wildlife cameraman, Mark Wheeler, has devoted | :07:38. | :07:39.
a quarter of a century to following the animals. | :07:40. | :07:41.
But first let's take a look at his subjects in action. | :07:42. | :07:49.
Rarely seen, they have a near mythical reputation. They have | :07:50. | :07:58.
boundless energy. And they are able to dive deep. And couched -- catch | :07:59. | :08:14.
the fastest of prey. Otters. My name is Charlie Hamilton James, wildlife | :08:15. | :08:21.
cameraman and other fanatic. I have been observing and filming these shy | :08:22. | :08:25.
but relentless animals for the last 25 years. For me, otters are the | :08:26. | :08:33.
ultimate predator. Perfectly bridging the gap between two worlds. | :08:34. | :08:42.
One dry, one wet. What a wonderful alternative to see | :08:43. | :08:47.
that this morning in some ways. Mark Wheeler is here. It is extraordinary | :08:48. | :08:53.
getting up close and personal. There is not a lot of footage of them | :08:54. | :09:00.
before this? No. They are very elusive, especially the Eurasian | :09:01. | :09:03.
otter that we are used to. We grew up with otters being these elusive | :09:04. | :09:10.
creatures. This is an opportunity to film otters like never before, | :09:11. | :09:14.
basically. And try and get Charlie Hamilton James on a journey to dig | :09:15. | :09:20.
deeper into otter biology. Why are they so allusive? Well, | :09:21. | :09:26.
traditionally they have been hunted and persecuted throughout their | :09:27. | :09:30.
rain. There became very shy and allusive. They are nocturnal. They | :09:31. | :09:37.
don't, ride during the day. They are only recovering from that. Pollution | :09:38. | :09:43.
and persecution. What you have discovered is that they seem to be | :09:44. | :09:47.
super animals. Tell us a bit about them? They have these incredibly | :09:48. | :09:52.
sets of adaptations. Behavioural and physiological. They can live in this | :09:53. | :09:59.
amazing hinterland between being a land-based predators that can catch | :10:00. | :10:01.
things online and a water-based predator. In this programme you get | :10:02. | :10:08.
up close and personal with these orphaned otters. It is a trio, is | :10:09. | :10:16.
that right? Yes, two brothers and a single male. They came to a rescue | :10:17. | :10:19.
centre in Wisconsin in North America. We found them just by | :10:20. | :10:27.
looking around rescue centres. They really help us tell the story of why | :10:28. | :10:32.
otters are amazing. We follow them from being these tiny little | :10:33. | :10:38.
bottle-fed bundles back to their release into the wild. What | :10:39. | :10:43.
surprised me is that they have these amazing pelts, it makes them | :10:44. | :10:46.
waterproof as adults but they are not when they are first-born? No, | :10:47. | :10:51.
they are not able to swim and they are not waterproof. They have these | :10:52. | :10:56.
two enormous moments early in life where they learn to swim and they | :10:57. | :11:02.
learn that water is not something to be afraid of. They finally get their | :11:03. | :11:08.
waterproof coating on therefore without getting too cold and without | :11:09. | :11:12.
getting hypothermia. We are going to have a look at some | :11:13. | :11:15.
orphaned pups enjoying one of their first swimming lessons. | :11:16. | :11:22.
Let's see if we can see that. Baby otters don't really like water. So | :11:23. | :11:32.
Mark needs to teach them their most important life lessons. That water | :11:33. | :11:42.
isn't something to be afraid of. Just like their mother would in the | :11:43. | :11:48.
wild, Mark makes soothing calls to reassure them. | :11:49. | :11:54.
He is sort of speaking otter cam isn't he?! He is. Out of context it | :11:55. | :12:01.
makes -- Centre restraints. He is putting them into water. They are | :12:02. | :12:06.
scared but he is reassuring them by making these little noises. It is a | :12:07. | :12:10.
fascinating programme. I wish you all the best with it. | :12:11. | :12:12.
Supercharged Otters is on BBC Two, Tomorrow at 8pm. | :12:13. | :12:18.
Just before we go this morning, a quick reminder of what we have | :12:19. | :12:23.
learned this morning about this attack last night. We know that a | :12:24. | :12:28.
van was driven into a group of worshippers near Finsbury Park at | :12:29. | :12:33.
about 20 past midnight last night. One man was killed in that attack. | :12:34. | :12:38.
Eight others -- aid others injured. We know that a man has been | :12:39. | :12:42.
detained, he has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. A | :12:43. | :12:46.
48-year-old man who has had to be treated in hospital. | :12:47. | :12:51.
The Metropolitan Police say this was an attack on London and all | :12:52. | :12:53.
Londoners. All of the victims are from the Muslim community. And two | :12:54. | :12:59.
of those in hospital are in a very serious condition. Police responded | :13:00. | :13:03.
immediately. There are other police on the scene within ten minutes. | :13:04. | :13:06.
This being treated as a major terror incidents. Police say nobody else | :13:07. | :13:11.
was in the van at the time and as far as they understand that this | :13:12. | :13:14.
time the man attacked alone. There has been huge praise for those | :13:15. | :13:19.
members of the public who assisted in detaining this man and helping | :13:20. | :13:22.
the police as well. They have called their restraint commendable under | :13:23. | :13:26.
the circumstances. Continued coverage on BBC News. | :13:27. | :13:30.
Theresa May will chair Cobra later. We are back tomorrow from six. | :13:31. | :13:31.
Bye-bye. | :13:32. | :13:37. |
