you did to finish 2017, whatever you | 0:02:37 | 0:02:50
are doing to start 2018, are these
11 minutes and 15 second in the | 0:02:50 | 0:02:55

Why is that? A levels, starting our | 0:03:18 | 0:03:25
careers. We will get into
university. Do you want to look at | 0:03:25 | 0:03:31
my kilts? In Scotland, Storm Dylan
had been an unwelcome party guest | 0:03:31 | 0:03:39
during the day but given the
importance of Hogmanay it would take | 0:03:39 | 0:03:42
a lot to spoil the celebrations,
even though winds of more than 70 | 0:03:42 | 0:03:46
miles an hour had hit some parts. In
Sydney, another quiet night, the | 0:03:46 | 0:03:51

British citizens who died when a | 0:04:29 | 0:04:34
seaplane crashed on New Year's Eve
has been named. The Australian pilot | 0:04:34 | 0:04:38
also died after crashing into a
river 30 miles north of Sydney. I've | 0:04:38 | 0:04:42
to New South Wales this morning and
Phil Mercer is our correspondent. We | 0:04:42 | 0:04:47
are watching the scene is a
celebration around the world moments | 0:04:47 | 0:04:50
ago but a real sense of tragedy
there this morning. | 0:04:50 | 0:04:55
Yes, it is what the Australian
police have been telling us today, | 0:04:55 | 0:04:59
it is an absolute tragedy that a
family who had travelled halfway | 0:04:59 | 0:05:02
around the world from Britain only
to die in one of the most dutiful | 0:05:02 | 0:05:07
places on the planet. The victims
have been identified as 58-year-old | 0:05:07 | 0:05:12
Richard Cousins, he was a very
successful businessman, chief | 0:05:12 | 0:05:17
executive of compass, the largest
catering group in the world, he was | 0:05:17 | 0:05:20
a former board member of Tesco and
due to retire in March. He died | 0:05:20 | 0:05:26
alongside two sons in their early
and mid- 20s. Also on board, Emma | 0:05:26 | 0:05:31
Bowden, she was Mr cousins Beyonce
and she died alongside her | 0:05:31 | 0:05:37
11-year-old daughter, so the police

Scores of people who had travelled
to Liverpool to celebrate | 0:05:53 | 0:05:55
the New Year have had to spend
the night in a temporary shelter | 0:05:55 | 0:05:59
after a fire in a multi-storey car
park next to the city's Echo arena | 0:05:59 | 0:06:03
destroyed more than 1,000 vehicles. | 0:06:03 | 0:06:04
Steve Saul reports. | 0:06:04 | 0:06:13
The fire is thought to have started
in one vehicle on the third floor of | 0:06:13 | 0:06:17
the car park will stop emergency
services arrived within minutes but | 0:06:17 | 0:06:21
the flames quickly spread to other
floors. Police say 1400 cars had | 0:06:21 | 0:06:25
been destroyed. Up to 4000 people
are thought to have been left | 0:06:25 | 0:06:29
stranded in the city. The arena on
the city 's waterfront was hosting | 0:06:29 | 0:06:33
the Liverpool International horse
show, no spectators or animals had | 0:06:33 | 0:06:37
been injured. My car. All of our
belongings in it. Everything. We | 0:06:37 | 0:06:43
hear from Northern Ireland, my
suitcase, all of my things in it, | 0:06:43 | 0:06:48
all gone. Merseyside Fire and Rescue
said it is one of the biggest fires | 0:06:48 | 0:06:52
that have ever dealt with with crews
working under challenging conditions | 0:06:52 | 0:06:55
from the outside of the building
because of a real fear of structural | 0:06:55 | 0:06:59
collapse. The difficulty that we
have is because this is so | 0:06:59 | 0:07:02
deep-seated, is to physically be
able to get into, right into the | 0:07:02 | 0:07:07
middle of the building to put the
fire out which clearly is the extent | 0:07:07 | 0:07:13
of which the fire has taken hold
fair, we will not be able to do that | 0:07:13 | 0:07:18
quite some time, given the
structural stability issues with the | 0:07:18 | 0:07:21
building as well. Liverpool City
Council are expected to help make | 0:07:21 | 0:07:26
arrangements to get those who have
been left in the city back home | 0:07:26 | 0:07:30
later. Temperate parking
arrangements have been made the | 0:07:30 | 0:07:33
arena operate as normal. | 0:07:33 | 0:07:36
The North Korean leader has said
that he has a nuclear button | 0:07:36 | 0:07:40
-- Britain's trains are the oldest
since current records began, | 0:07:40 | 0:07:43
according to figures
from a transport watchdog. | 0:07:43 | 0:07:45
Passengers are travelling
in carriages which were typically | 0:07:45 | 0:07:47
built in the mid 1990s. | 0:07:47 | 0:07:48
The Office of Rail and Road says
older rolling stock can lead | 0:07:48 | 0:07:51
to problems with reliability
and poorer performance. | 0:07:51 | 0:07:53
The Department for Transport says
4,500 new carriages will be | 0:07:53 | 0:07:56
introduced across Britain by 2024. | 0:07:56 | 0:08:03
The President of Iran
has appealed for calm, | 0:08:03 | 0:08:05
saying people would have the right
to protest but not to commit acts | 0:08:05 | 0:08:09
of violence, amid continuing
anti-government protests. | 0:08:09 | 0:08:10
In his first public comments
since demonstrations | 0:08:10 | 0:08:12
against the government began
on Thursday, Hassan Rouhani warned | 0:08:12 | 0:08:14
that violence and public disorder
would not be tolerated. | 0:08:14 | 0:08:24
TRANSLATION: | 0:08:24 | 0:08:28
The atmosphere for criticism,
protest within a legal framework is | 0:08:28 | 0:08:32
absolutely free but the atmosphere
for destruction and the rest is | 0:08:32 | 0:08:36
definitely not an atmosphere which
people would tolerate. | 0:08:36 | 0:08:39
The North Korean leader has said

In a defiant New Year message,
Kim Jong-un said the United States | 0:08:43 | 0:08:46
would now never be able to start
a war with North Korea. | 0:08:46 | 0:08:49

Our correspondent Sophie Long
is in the South Korean capital Seoul | 0:08:52 | 0:08:55
for us this morning. | 0:08:55 | 0:08:56
Sophie, will this just be seen
as another in a long line of threats | 0:08:56 | 0:09:00
against the US? | 0:09:00 | 0:09:04
I think in terms of his message, to
the United States, there was nothing | 0:09:04 | 0:09:10
new, and other defined message
saying we have a nuclear capability | 0:09:10 | 0:09:14
that can strike anywhere on
mainland. He also said I have a | 0:09:14 | 0:09:18
nuclear button my desk. Does he have
the capability to strike the US | 0:09:18 | 0:09:22
mainland in the way that he has
posted about? The answer is we don't | 0:09:22 | 0:09:26
know. When he carried out the sixth
and most powerful nuclear test in | 0:09:26 | 0:09:31
September 2017 and he carried out a
test launch of an intercontinental | 0:09:31 | 0:09:35
ballistic missile Mr Bob with
missile which he said could strike | 0:09:35 | 0:09:39
anywhere on the mainland. Whether he
has the ability to miniaturising | 0:09:39 | 0:09:43
nuclear capability and put it on a
missile that can reach the United | 0:09:43 | 0:09:47
States, we don't yet know although
many people and analysts think it | 0:09:47 | 0:09:50
may not be far off doing that. It
was slightly more surprising if he | 0:09:50 | 0:09:54
had a much more consolatory tone
towards South Korea, his neighbour | 0:09:54 | 0:09:58
but also the United States's ally.
He said to them that he was open to | 0:09:58 | 0:10:04
dialogue and debate even consider
sending North Korean athletes to the | 0:10:04 | 0:10:07
Winter Olympics which are due to
take place in South Korea in | 0:10:07 | 0:10:10
February which is important to the
government here, President Moon has | 0:10:10 | 0:10:13
said it to happen he thinks it could
be a turning point in relations with | 0:10:13 | 0:10:17
North Korea. | 0:10:17 | 0:10:19
A small passenger plane has crashed
in a tourist area of Costa Rica, | 0:10:19 | 0:10:23
killing 10 Americans
and two local pilots. | 0:10:23 | 0:10:25
It was travelling to the capital
San Jose from the mountainous region | 0:10:25 | 0:10:33

an area popular with tourists | 0:10:33 | 0:10:36
on the Pacific coast. | 0:10:36 | 0:10:37
The cause of the crash
is not yet known. | 0:10:37 | 0:10:40

of the passengers shared | 0:10:40 | 0:10:42
the same surname. | 0:10:42 | 0:10:43
The Archbishop of Canterbury has
paid tribute to emergency workers | 0:10:43 | 0:10:46
in his New Year's Day message. | 0:10:46 | 0:10:48
Justin Welby said 2018 could be
defined either by human suffering | 0:10:48 | 0:10:52
or the compassionate response to it. | 0:10:52 | 0:10:53
Here's our religion
editor Martin Bashir. | 0:10:53 | 0:11:05
To the unrelenting dedication of the
emergency services, Archbishop | 0:11:05 | 0:11:09
Justin Welby chose the London
ambulance headquarters in Waterloo | 0:11:09 | 0:11:12
to deliver his New Year message. And
he began by describing the Terara | 0:11:12 | 0:11:17
attack on nearby London Bridge and
Borough Market. On the third of June | 0:11:17 | 0:11:21
as the terrifying events unfolded on
London Bridge and in Borough Market, | 0:11:21 | 0:11:25
staff took over the 100 calls from
those caught in the atrocities. He | 0:11:25 | 0:11:29
went on to catalogue other terror
attacks at Manchester, Westminster, | 0:11:29 | 0:11:34
Finsbury Park and Parsons Green,
along with the tragedy at Grenfell | 0:11:34 | 0:11:39
Tower. I visited Grenfell Tower
while it was still burning, I | 0:11:39 | 0:11:43
remember the desperation and sorrow.
Alright? Visiting Borough Market six | 0:11:43 | 0:11:49
months after the attack, Justin
Welby witnessed the recovery of a | 0:11:49 | 0:11:53
community that, like others, has
inspired the nation. In concluding | 0:11:53 | 0:11:57
his message, the Archbishop of what
would define us in the year ahead? | 0:11:57 | 0:12:03
Will it be the depth of suffering or
the breadth of compassion? The | 0:12:03 | 0:12:08
darkness or the light of human
kindness? It is a choice. But not | 0:12:08 | 0:12:13
one we have to make a loan. Jesus
Christ, the light of the world, | 0:12:13 | 0:12:18
weeks for all struggles, works for
our healing, and invites us to walk | 0:12:18 | 0:12:22
in his light. He is right there with
us in the midst of everything. May I | 0:12:22 | 0:12:27
wish you all a very happy New Year.

Good morning to you if you just

all of the team at BBC Breakfast,
the first editions of the papers of | 0:13:14 | 0:13:19
2018 are here of course so let's
take a look at the front pages. What | 0:13:19 | 0:13:23
the fireworks as you would expect on
the front pages. The Guardian has | 0:13:23 | 0:13:28
the view from the Thames, the London
eye and all of the fireworks going | 0:13:28 | 0:13:32
off beyond it. The Daily Telegraph
has textures from, but looks like | 0:13:32 | 0:13:42
Sydney, the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
It is. Red sky at night New Year 's | 0:13:42 | 0:13:46
delight. The main story on the front
of the Daily Telegraph today is | 0:13:46 | 0:13:51
Winter flu plunges hospitals into
chaos. But is their main story. The | 0:13:51 | 0:13:56
Times has a slightly more personal,
a smaller picture I guess, 2018 lit | 0:13:56 | 0:14:00
up a sparklers in Edinburgh by some
of revellers there. It says here | 0:14:00 | 0:14:05
about jobs and house prices up big
at the start of 2018. Some of the | 0:14:05 | 0:14:09
tabloids now. The sun has the
terrible story from Australia of the | 0:14:09 | 0:14:14
British people, five actually have
been confirmed to have died in the | 0:14:14 | 0:14:19
seaplane crash, the front page
there. The Mirror has a campaign, | 0:14:19 | 0:14:23
Lord Winston backing a campaign, let
hospitals -- hospital patient parks | 0:14:23 | 0:14:29
are free. The Duke of Edinburgh is
on the front page of them are, the | 0:14:29 | 0:14:33
mail as well, he said something
about a man with a beard and asked | 0:14:33 | 0:14:37
Princess and about it apparently, at
centre came yesterday, with the man | 0:14:37 | 0:14:42
was a terrorist. He has been accused
of another slight gaffe. And | 0:14:42 | 0:14:46
finally, the daily express, diabetes
drug whose memory. It is a hope for | 0:14:46 | 0:14:51
a breakthrough in the battle against
Alzheimer's. And the Duke of | 0:14:51 | 0:14:55
Edinburgh on the front page there as
well. It is 6:15 AM, good morning. | 0:14:55 | 0:15:00

Today, a lot of wind. Rain at times. | 0:15:53 | 0:15:55
Improving to the afternoon. Low
pressure across the north of the UK. | 0:15:55 | 0:16:00
This will bring wet weather through
the English Channel. Fairly strong | 0:16:00 | 0:16:06
winds across southern counties of

dry weather with sunshine this
morning. Wet and windy weather in | 0:16:19 | 0:16:26
Northern Ireland and western parts
of Scotland. Cold air. Snow falling | 0:16:26 | 0:16:30
over the high ground. Continuing to
move away, the low pressure, towards | 0:16:30 | 0:16:37
the near continent, eventually
clearing the south-east. Sunshine | 0:16:37 | 0:16:40
behind. Not a bad afternoon. Wet and
windy weather in the north of the UK | 0:16:40 | 0:16:45
and in northern England as well.
Quite chilly. Improving towards | 0:16:45 | 0:16:50
tonight to be a ridge of high
pressure building in. A perfect | 0:16:50 | 0:16:55
recipe for a chilly night. Something
we have not seen in a few nights. | 0:16:55 | 0:17:00
Frost and ice in central and
northern Scotland. Changing across | 0:17:00 | 0:17:06
the west. The next area of low
pressure comes in through the | 0:17:06 | 0:17:10
morning. Snow in the Pennines and
the Scottish mountains. Behind the | 0:17:10 | 0:17:16
band of rain, improving sunshine and

and Wednesday, yet another area of
low pressure across the UK, bringing | 0:17:21 | 0:17:24
windy gale force winds at times
Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. | 0:17:24 | 0:17:31
Blustery showers affecting western
areas. Some will be heavy. | 0:17:31 | 0:17:36
Temperatures are where they should
be for the time of year. Further | 0:17:36 | 0:17:41
areas of low pressure moving through
in the week ahead. Spells of heavy | 0:17:41 | 0:17:46
rain. Turning cold on Friday. Back
to you. Thank you very much. That | 0:17:46 | 0:17:52
was the weather forecast. | 0:17:52 | 0:17:54
Around half a million people
are expected to turn out | 0:17:54 | 0:17:57
in Central London for the annual
New Year's Day Parade. | 0:17:57 | 0:18:00
Thousands of performers,
including marching bands, | 0:18:00 | 0:18:02
cheerleaders, and stunt drivers
are set to entertain the crowds. | 0:18:02 | 0:18:05
Not | 0:18:05 | 0:18:06 | |
Not content with all the frivolities
last night. | 0:18:06 | 0:18:09
Breakfast's Graham Satchell
is getting a taste of the action | 0:18:09 | 0:18:12
for us this morning. | 0:18:12 | 0:18:19
Bright and early this morning. You
are not alone. Happy New Year. Happy | 0:18:19 | 0:18:25
New Year. We are not alone. We have
cheerleaders from all over the | 0:18:25 | 0:18:31
southern States of America, mainly
from Texas, rehearsing for the | 0:18:31 | 0:18:35
annual parade kicking off today.
About 8000 performers and half a | 0:18:35 | 0:18:41
million people are expected on the
streets of London. You carry onward | 0:18:41 | 0:18:45
Ching the girls and I will talk to
the director of the parade. Good | 0:18:45 | 0:18:49
morning. -- watching. This has been
going on for 30 years. We started | 0:18:49 | 0:19:02
this because London was a grim place
at this time of year. We wanted to | 0:19:02 | 0:19:09
liven up the city. Not only that, we
wanted something the whole family | 0:19:09 | 0:19:13
could do to celebrate the new year.
New Year's is a bit of a drunken | 0:19:13 | 0:19:22
event. What are some of the
highlights? We have the fabulous | 0:19:22 | 0:19:29
marching bands from the US and all
over the world. We have | 0:19:29 | 0:19:32
cheerleaders. We have all of the
competition, including floats, and | 0:19:32 | 0:19:48
Showtime! Roll up, roll up, to the
greatest show on Earth. Here is the | 0:19:48 | 0:19:52
marching band. They are from Troy,
Ohio. You will notice that the | 0:19:52 | 0:19:56
people we have with us are from
America. But there are floats and | 0:19:56 | 0:20:01
marching bands and cheerleaders from
all over London and all over the | 0:20:01 | 0:20:05
world. And here is Kathy from Ohio,
the band leader. You are the | 0:20:05 | 0:20:11
bandleader, correct? Yes. It is be
in London. We are looking forward to | 0:20:11 | 0:20:17
the parade today. -- It is awesome
to be. And you are from? Troy, Ohio. | 0:20:17 | 0:20:26
The band has 89 people. It is a high
school band. We are excited to be | 0:20:26 | 0:20:32
here today. What does it mean for
your students to be here in a band | 0:20:32 | 0:20:38
like this? It is a family. We
celebrate together, we have sad | 0:20:38 | 0:20:44
times together, and we take
vacations together. How is it to be | 0:20:44 | 0:20:48
in London today? A great time. We
have great weather. Happy to be | 0:20:48 | 0:20:54
here. Thank you. There we are. It is
an ungodly hour to be honest to be | 0:20:54 | 0:21:08
rehearsing in Parliament Square.
Things kick off at 12 o'clock. It is | 0:21:08 | 0:21:11
free. You are more than welcome to
come down. If you have any | 0:21:11 | 0:21:14
neighbours near, they will not be
happy. Such enthusiasm at such an | 0:21:14 | 0:21:26
ungodly hour. And you have had a go
at cheerleading before. Yeah! On top | 0:21:26 | 0:21:32
of a pyramid. It is very gymnastic!
It is a very difficult sport to do. | 0:21:32 | 0:21:38
On more mainstream matters, what an
end to the year. City nearly slipped | 0:21:38 | 0:21:47
up. Christa palace must be kicking
themselves. -- Crystal Palace. | 0:21:47 | 0:21:57
Time now for the sport with Mike. | 0:21:57 | 0:21:59
Late penalty drama in both
of yesterday's Premier League games. | 0:21:59 | 0:22:01
Crystal Palace missed a late one
to snatch a win over leaders | 0:22:01 | 0:22:05
Manchester City, as their 18 match
unbeaten run came to an end | 0:22:05 | 0:22:08
yesterday, while West Brom salvaged
a point with a dubious penalty over | 0:22:08 | 0:22:11
Arsenal. | 0:22:11 | 0:22:11
Adam Wild rounds up the action. | 0:22:11 | 0:22:13
The message from fans was clear
enough. Still, it is hard to imagine | 0:22:13 | 0:22:17
how things could get any better for
Manchester City. Never has a team | 0:22:17 | 0:22:22
been so far ahead at the end of the
year. To their potential, there | 0:22:22 | 0:22:25
seems no end. For Crystal Palace,
this seemed a new year lacking | 0:22:25 | 0:22:31
celebration. The injured player's
replacement, Sergio Aguero, when the | 0:22:31 | 0:22:39
closest in the first half. But this
was not the brilliant Crystal Palace | 0:22:39 | 0:22:43
everyone feared. The target were
straightforward, but they hit it | 0:22:43 | 0:22:49
seemingly less so. Crystal Palace
had aims of their own. They had | 0:22:49 | 0:22:54
chances which they should have done
better. Everyone seemed to know it. | 0:22:54 | 0:22:59
That, ultimately, for them, is how
this will be remembered. In the 90th | 0:22:59 | 0:23:04
minute, awarded a penalty. Unable to
see the year out with a bang. Not | 0:23:04 | 0:23:10
quite the perfect end to 2017 for
either side. Full boat, New Year's | 0:23:10 | 0:23:16
Eve, as is so often the case, a bit
of anticlimax. -- for both. Arsene | 0:23:16 | 0:23:25
Wenger took charge of Arsenal for
the 811th Premier League game. But | 0:23:25 | 0:23:34
something had happened the
celebrations. It was not until the | 0:23:34 | 0:23:39
second half until they found a way
through. Alexis Sanchez' free kick | 0:23:39 | 0:23:45
deflected. But that was far from the
end of it. Two minutes remaining, | 0:23:45 | 0:23:51
West from were offered a hand back
into it. This, a penalty, gladly | 0:23:51 | 0:23:56
spoiling the special day for Arsene
Wenger. 1-1. Controversy, and drama, | 0:23:56 | 0:24:06
to the very end. | 0:24:06 | 0:24:08
Exeter Chiefs start the new year ten
points clear at the top | 0:24:08 | 0:24:11
of the Rugby Union Premiership. | 0:24:11 | 0:24:12
They beat Leicester 30 points
to six, with four second half tries | 0:24:12 | 0:24:16
at Sandy Park. | 0:24:16 | 0:24:16
That's Tiger's sixth
league defeat in a row, | 0:24:16 | 0:24:17
their worst run in over 50 years. | 0:24:18 | 0:24:19
Alex Gulrajani reports. | 0:24:19 | 0:24:27
2017 will go down as a great year.
Exeter, champions for the first | 0:24:27 | 0:24:33
time. With the chiefs clear at the
top of the table, the fascinating | 0:24:33 | 0:24:40
could be memorable as well. The
hands were making far too many | 0:24:40 | 0:24:46
errors. Chances missed. It took root
strength to put the league leaders | 0:24:46 | 0:24:54
in charge. Don carried them. A gap
emerged between the sides. Exeter | 0:24:54 | 0:25:00
needed no help. Jonny May is was in
a giving mood. Straight into the | 0:25:00 | 0:25:07
arms of Henry Slade. Those
supporters may have stayed on their | 0:25:07 | 0:25:14
feet, but there was still time for
more. The last play of the game. The | 0:25:14 | 0:25:22
winning try to be the perfect end to
a monumental year for Exeter. BBC | 0:25:22 | 0:25:27

Yes, the Chiefs go marching on. | 0:25:34 | 0:25:37
Scarlets won away at Cardiff Blues

Cardiff led at half time
but Scarlets fought back soon | 0:25:42 | 0:25:45
after the break. | 0:25:45 | 0:25:45
Rhys Patchell's try,
their second of the match, | 0:25:45 | 0:25:48
sealed the win. | 0:25:48 | 0:25:48
The victory leaves them
top of conference B. | 0:25:48 | 0:25:51

England head coach, Trevor Bayliss,
says he still has full belief | 0:25:59 | 0:26:02
in all-rounder, Moeen Ali,
despite his recent run of poor form. | 0:26:02 | 0:26:05
The 30-year-old has only taken three
wickets and averaged 19 runs | 0:26:05 | 0:26:07
with the bat this series. | 0:26:07 | 0:26:12
He is always a guy that likes to
keep playing. But... I have full | 0:26:12 | 0:26:17
confidence in him going forward, to
be honest. I mean, it was only two | 0:26:17 | 0:26:22
months ago we were talking about him
being one of the best all-rounders | 0:26:22 | 0:26:25
in the world. Now, he reached the
milestone, what was it, 2000 runs | 0:26:25 | 0:26:30
and 100 wickets. He got back quicker
than everyone else. -- that quicker. | 0:26:30 | 0:26:38
One other line from the England
squad, Ben Stokes won't join up | 0:26:38 | 0:26:41
with the England One Day
squad in Australia. | 0:26:41 | 0:26:43
Dawid Malan will replace
him in the squad. | 0:26:43 | 0:26:46
British number one Johanna Konta
starts her season today with a match | 0:26:46 | 0:26:49

It's her first tournament
with new coach Michael Joyce | 0:26:51 | 0:26:54

forward to starting the season | 0:26:54 | 0:26:57
together. | 0:26:57 | 0:27:13
Andy Murray also returns. He is
playing in in an exhibition match. | 0:27:13 | 0:27:20
He is down at number 16. That sounds
wrong. I am sure he will go back up. | 0:27:20 | 0:27:25
Just to be clear, you have a cold.
It isn't that you had a late-night? | 0:27:25 | 0:27:31
No, of course not. Thank you very
much. He will have more sport for us | 0:27:31 | 0:27:41
during the course of the morning. | 0:27:41 | 0:27:42
The start of the new year has
many of us reflecting on the past 12 | 0:27:42 | 0:27:46
months and what we want
to differently in the year ahead. | 0:27:46 | 0:27:49
We've been asking people
in Manchester what they hope | 0:27:49 | 0:27:56
Try and be a little bit healthier.
Umm, but not a lot different. Try to | 0:27:56 | 0:28:05
enjoy ourselves. To finish my
masters and get some work. To help | 0:28:05 | 0:28:09
more people out if they are hurt or
anything is wrong. Eat healthy rude. | 0:28:09 | 0:28:18
Go on a diet. But I don't really
want to. Resolutions should not be | 0:28:18 | 0:28:26
done on the first of January, they
should be ongoing throughout the | 0:28:26 | 0:28:30
year. Keep maintaining them on to
them for the right reasons. I never | 0:28:30 | 0:28:35
stick to them. Exactly, yeah. They
are affecting. Still, life goes on. | 0:28:35 | 0:28:40
Why, because it is a new year, do
you... It is a great idea, but if | 0:28:40 | 0:28:46
you do not let them, you do not feel
bad when you do not stick to them. I | 0:28:46 | 0:28:52
am going to be a better husband, a
better father, and, umm, a better | 0:28:52 | 0:28:57
person. I do a decent job already,
but there is always room for | 0:28:57 | 0:29:01
improvement. | 0:29:01 | 0:29:05
There is always room for
improvement. I think she was right, | 0:29:05 | 0:29:08
do not set them, and you cannot fail
them. | 0:29:08 | 0:29:11 | |
We'd love to know what you are
hoping to achieve in 2018. | 0:29:11 | 0:29:14

stick to them. | 0:29:17 | 0:29:18

The North Korean leader has said

Half of the young
people go to school | 0:34:28 | 0:34:33
so that's why I wrote about school. | 0:34:33 | 0:34:36
I wrote about cars and most
of all the people, | 0:34:36 | 0:34:39
they'll soon be in love. | 0:34:39 | 0:34:42

are the famous Simon Templar. | 0:34:52 | 0:34:57

James Bond. | 0:35:07 | 0:35:11
Is there time before we leave
for lesson number three? | 0:35:11 | 0:35:23
Absolutely. | 0:35:23 | 0:35:24
There's no sense in
going off half cocked. | 0:35:24 | 0:35:29
Stir in some crushed ice,
shake, strain and pour. | 0:35:29 | 0:35:34
Top it off with one or less. | 0:35:34 | 0:35:36
Two. | 0:35:36 | 0:35:36 | |
I said two. | 0:35:36 | 0:35:38
You were perfect up
until the olives. | 0:35:38 | 0:35:40
Two olives. | 0:35:40 | 0:35:40
That way you see they can gently
bounce up against each other. | 0:35:40 | 0:35:46
I'm afraid the spectacle of two
olives gently bouncing up | 0:35:46 | 0:35:48
against each other is
a pleasure I shall forego. | 0:35:48 | 0:35:51
Oh, you don't want
to bust up a pair. | 0:35:51 | 0:35:54
We played it tongue in cheek. | 0:35:54 | 0:35:59
I play most heroes tan in cheek. | 0:35:59 | 0:36:01
I really don't see myself
as a hero so I'd play it | 0:36:01 | 0:36:05
as if it is all a joke. | 0:36:05 | 0:36:09
House with a door. | 0:36:09 | 0:36:10
One, two, three, four. | 0:36:10 | 0:36:14
Great big curtain rings! | 0:36:14 | 0:36:17
I think they must have come
out of a giant's house! | 0:36:17 | 0:36:20
I know - I will be an owl. | 0:36:20 | 0:36:29
Our aim, we were told,
was to play one to one | 0:36:29 | 0:36:32
through the camera. | 0:36:32 | 0:36:33
Up and down with you. | 0:36:33 | 0:36:38
And it works, that is why people
remember it because it was | 0:36:38 | 0:36:41
as if we were talking only to them. | 0:36:41 | 0:36:43
It's Windy Miller. | 0:36:43 | 0:36:44

Mr John Noakes! | 0:36:55 | 0:36:59
I'm sure this does me good. | 0:37:03 | 0:37:06
Oh, get off my foot. | 0:37:06 | 0:37:12
While our animals are not
going to be happy, | 0:37:12 | 0:37:14
they will be
going away on holiday, | 0:37:14 | 0:37:16
they're going to spend it
in the country | 0:37:16 | 0:37:19
but Lulu won't be there. | 0:37:19 | 0:37:24

the top of the column, | 0:37:34 | 0:37:37
the worst part began - | 0:37:37 | 0:37:38
I had to go down again,
in a bosun's chair. | 0:37:38 | 0:37:41
But you coming down to join me? | 0:37:41 | 0:37:43
Yes, I'm coming down. | 0:37:43 | 0:37:44
Do you feel all right? | 0:37:44 | 0:37:46

How long did it take
you to record the album? | 0:38:41 | 0:38:43
Between two and three years. | 0:38:43 | 0:38:45
Do you have any ideas of
what you would like to swap it for? | 0:38:45 | 0:38:48

I happened to miss a bus one
Christmas evening and went | 0:38:57 | 0:39:01
into a London store and saw this toy
bear on the counter. | 0:39:01 | 0:39:04
Nobody had bought it,
it was the only one left, | 0:39:04 | 0:39:07
I took it on to my wife. | 0:39:07 | 0:39:14
We lived near Paddington
so we called it Paddington. | 0:39:14 | 0:39:16
One day I was sitting with a blank
sheet of paper and a typewriter | 0:39:16 | 0:39:20
and started to write a story
about it and I became a book. | 0:39:20 | 0:39:23
Mr and Mrs Brown first met
Paddington on a railway station | 0:39:23 | 0:39:26
which is how he came to have such
an unusual book for a bear. | 0:39:26 | 0:39:30
Based on my father, very polite man,
always wore a hat and Paddington has | 0:39:30 | 0:39:34
a lot of him in him. | 0:39:34 | 0:39:35
Good afternoon, he said,
can I help you. | 0:39:35 | 0:39:38
There's Parsley. | 0:39:38 | 0:39:48
Sometimes Mr Onion
lets him ring the bell. | 0:39:48 | 0:39:50
London, a lovely city. | 0:39:50 | 0:39:52
You can go to France or America,
India, Asia, Australia, | 0:39:52 | 0:39:58
you're going to come
back to London city. | 0:39:58 | 0:40:06
# London is the place for me. | 0:40:06 | 0:40:08
# London is the place for me. | 0:40:10 | 0:40:19
# London is the place for me.# | 0:40:19 | 0:40:24
I think there was a sort
of reticence and nervousness | 0:40:30 | 0:40:33
that the women might
take over all together. | 0:40:33 | 0:40:37
We might not present an acceptable
face of cricket and I actually cried | 0:40:37 | 0:40:40
as I walked out onto the pitch. | 0:40:40 | 0:40:42
It was the most incredible feeling. | 0:40:42 | 0:40:45
COMMENTATOR: Rachel Flynt,
what a good piece of fielding | 0:40:45 | 0:40:48
but not good running
between the wickets, though. | 0:40:48 | 0:40:55
UMPIRE: Advantage, Miss Graf. | 0:40:55 | 0:41:00
Overcome with the emotion of it all. | 0:41:00 | 0:41:06
She just told me "Jana,
you will do it, I believe one day | 0:41:06 | 0:41:09
you will do it." | 0:41:09 | 0:41:11
She's done it! | 0:41:11 | 0:41:24
50-1, Blackburn Rovers seven,
Nottingham Forest nil. | 0:41:24 | 0:41:33
After our last programme,
the editor of Final Score came | 0:41:33 | 0:41:36
with a box
and when he opened it | 0:41:36 | 0:41:38
and produced this trophy, | 0:41:38 | 0:41:40
I thought "That's absolutely made my
day because that is something | 0:41:40 | 0:41:43
that
I have always thought, | 0:41:43 | 0:41:44
having watched the sports
personality of the year, | 0:41:44 | 0:41:47
I would love to have something
like that as a souvenir | 0:41:47 | 0:41:50
of my career". | 0:41:50 | 0:41:50

tonight, Smithfield market? | 0:44:37 | 0:44:40
Are you happy, I mean
really really happy happy. | 0:44:40 | 0:44:47
Fantastically happy. | 0:44:47 | 0:44:49
I am. | 0:44:49 | 0:44:51 | |
I know it's silly but sometimes it
worries me, I'm so happy. | 0:44:51 | 0:44:55
I keep expecting something
to come along and spoil it. | 0:44:55 | 0:44:58
Daft thing, what could
possibly do that. | 0:44:58 | 0:45:07

we saw it in this antiques shop | 0:46:55 | 0:46:59
window on Nightingale Street. | 0:46:59 | 0:47:00
Where are you going, Jack? | 0:47:00 | 0:47:08
To see a man about a thing. | 0:47:08 | 0:47:10
Where's me dog?! | 0:47:10 | 0:47:10
I wouldn't have done that,
but it was an emergency. | 0:47:10 | 0:47:13
I've brought my own flaming dog! | 0:47:13 | 0:47:18
Calm down, Vera, love. | 0:47:18 | 0:47:20

here looking as you do? | 0:48:47 | 0:48:52
Well... | 0:48:52 | 0:48:54
Many people said, "Don't do that,
you'll never work again" and I said, | 0:48:54 | 0:48:58
"It's not about sexuality,
it's about the tenderness | 0:48:58 | 0:49:00
of the individual as opposed
to the cruelty of the crowd." | 0:49:00 | 0:49:03
We did so well, but... | 0:49:03 | 0:49:04
a beautiful woman. | 0:49:04 | 0:49:14

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service
say this is one of the biggest fires | 1:07:13 | 1:07:16
they have ever dealt with,
with crews working under challenging | 1:07:16 | 1:07:19
conditions from the outside
of the building because of a real | 1:07:19 | 1:07:22
fear of structural collapse. | 1:07:22 | 1:07:24
The difficulty that we have
is because this is so deep-seated, | 1:07:24 | 1:07:27
is to physically be able to get
into - right into the middle | 1:07:27 | 1:07:31
of the building to put the fire out,
which clearly is the extent | 1:07:31 | 1:07:34
of which the fire has taken hold
there, we will not be able to do | 1:07:34 | 1:07:38
that for quite some time,
given the structural stability | 1:07:38 | 1:07:41
issues with the building as well. | 1:07:41 | 1:07:48
Liverpool City Council are expected
to help make arrangements to get | 1:07:48 | 1:07:51
those who have been left
in the city back home later. | 1:07:51 | 1:07:54

as another in a long line of threats | 1:09:00 | 1:09:04
against the US? | 1:09:04 | 1:09:04
Yeah, I think in terms, certainly,
of his message to the United States, | 1:09:04 | 1:09:08
there was nothing new -
another defiant message saying | 1:09:08 | 1:09:10
"We have a nuclear capability
that can strike anywhere | 1:09:10 | 1:09:13
on your mainland". | 1:09:13 | 1:09:14
He also said "I have a nuclear

to strike the US mainland in the way | 1:09:17 | 1:09:20

The answer to that is we don't know. | 1:09:22 | 1:09:24
We do know that he carried out
the sixth and most powerful nuclear | 1:09:24 | 1:09:27
test in September of 2017
and he carried out a test launch | 1:09:27 | 1:09:30
of an intercontinental ballistic
missile in November, | 1:09:30 | 1:09:32
which he said could strike
anywhere on the US mainland. | 1:09:32 | 1:09:35
Whether he has the ability
to miniaturise the nuclear | 1:09:35 | 1:09:38
capability and put it on a missile
that can reach the United States, | 1:09:38 | 1:09:41
we don't yet know, although many
people, many analysts think | 1:09:41 | 1:09:44
that he might not be
far off doing that. | 1:09:44 | 1:09:46
What was slightly more surprising
was he had a much more consolatory | 1:09:46 | 1:09:49
tone towards South Korea,
his neighbour but also, | 1:09:49 | 1:09:52
of course, the United States' ally. | 1:09:52 | 1:09:54
He said to them that he was open
to dialogue and he may even consider | 1:09:54 | 1:09:58
sending North Korean athletes
to the Winter Olympics which are due | 1:09:58 | 1:10:01
to take place in South
Korea in February. | 1:10:01 | 1:10:06
That's very important
to the government here. | 1:10:06 | 1:10:08
President Moon has said that
if that were to happen, | 1:10:08 | 1:10:10
he thinks it could be a turning
point in relations with North Korea. | 1:10:10 | 1:10:17
Sophie Long speaking to us earlier
from Seoul. The outgoing chairman of | 1:10:17 | 1:10:21
the police Federation has claimed
that members of the Freemasons are | 1:10:21 | 1:10:25
blocking reform in policing. Steve
White to represent rank-and-file | 1:10:25 | 1:10:30
officers in England and Wales met
the comment in an interview with the | 1:10:30 | 1:10:34
Guardian newspaper. The claim has
been rejected by senior police | 1:10:34 | 1:10:37
officers and by the masons, who say
they uphold high moral principles | 1:10:37 | 1:10:41
and values. | 1:10:41 | 1:10:43
The Archbishop of Canterbury has
paid tribute to emergency workers | 1:10:43 | 1:10:45
in his New Year's Day message. | 1:10:45 | 1:10:47
Justin Welby said 2018 could be
defined either by human suffering | 1:10:47 | 1:10:50
or the compassionate response to it. | 1:10:50 | 1:10:52
Here's our religion

Special coins marking 100-year
anniversaries of women getting | 1:11:03 | 1:11:06
the right to vote and the end
of the First World War | 1:11:06 | 1:11:09
are being released this year. | 1:11:09 | 1:11:10
The Royal Mint will also introduce
ones celebrating 200 years | 1:11:10 | 1:11:13
since the publication
of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. | 1:11:13 | 1:11:16
The two-pound coin,
marking the anniversary | 1:11:16 | 1:11:18
of the First World War Armistice,
features a quote from Wilfred Owen's | 1:11:18 | 1:11:21
poem Strange Meeting,
which says "the truth untold, | 1:11:21 | 1:11:23
the pity of war". | 1:11:23 | 1:11:28
That's this morning's main stories. | 1:11:28 | 1:11:33
It is seven AM, good morning and
happy New Year. If you are joining | 1:11:33 | 1:11:38
us, perhaps watching in Liverpool
this morning where around 1400 cars | 1:11:38 | 1:11:43
have been destroyed after a fire
broke out in a multistorey car park. | 1:11:43 | 1:11:46
That is next to the cities echo
arena, it happened last night where | 1:11:46 | 1:11:51
a horse show was being held.
Mercifully no one was hurt but | 1:11:51 | 1:11:55
residents in nearby apartments were
evacuated and the fire service | 1:11:55 | 1:11:58
tackled the blaze, many people left
stranded without their cars. That's | 1:11:58 | 1:12:02
talked to Paul Conway at the scene
last night, planning to visit the | 1:12:02 | 1:12:06
horse show at the Echo Arena. | 1:12:06 | 1:12:10
Good morning and banks are joining
us bright and early. Describe the | 1:12:10 | 1:12:14
scene if you would reduce or last
night. We arrived at the Echo Arena | 1:12:14 | 1:12:20
just after 6pm and everyone was
being turned away, the Fire Brigade | 1:12:20 | 1:12:25
were already on the scene. It was
just a thought suggested we go along | 1:12:25 | 1:12:31
and have a drink somewhere and wait
for it to clear. It appeared like it | 1:12:31 | 1:12:36
was just a normal car fire,
something of nothing, there wasn't | 1:12:36 | 1:12:39
much smoke at all. So we made our
way out to one of the pubs adjacent | 1:12:39 | 1:12:47
to the Echo and we thought it was OK
and then we heard that the show was | 1:12:47 | 1:12:53
cancelled and we couldn't believe
it, there wasn't that much of a | 1:12:53 | 1:12:57
fire, and then we started to see the
flames coming out the side of the | 1:12:57 | 1:13:01
car park and obviously the fire
brigade were there, putting a lot of | 1:13:01 | 1:13:06
water up the side of the building,
but the fire was just getting bigger | 1:13:06 | 1:13:10
and bigger and bigger. Yeah, it
became apparent that it wasn't going | 1:13:10 | 1:13:15
to get put out any time soon.
Looking at some of the this while | 1:13:15 | 1:13:19
you were talking there, Paul, over
1400 cars, virtually every single | 1:13:19 | 1:13:25
car in the car park, was destroyed.
What were people saying as they | 1:13:25 | 1:13:29
watched it unfold? We happened to be
at the bar talking to people while | 1:13:29 | 1:13:34
we were getting served and one of
the bar man was looking out at it | 1:13:34 | 1:13:39
and said come on, it isn't that big,
everybody's car who works in this | 1:13:39 | 1:13:45
building all parks in their Deuk-Hee
the explosions of the petrol tanks | 1:13:45 | 1:13:50
and the tyres going and it was like
gunfire at one stage. Astonishing | 1:13:50 | 1:13:56
pictures while you are talking.
Obviously the horse show was taking | 1:13:56 | 1:14:02
place, you are involved in the
equestrian world, I suppose Kelly | 1:14:02 | 1:14:06
know one and no animal was injured
because it is astonishing to look at | 1:14:06 | 1:14:10
this picture. As we decided to
leave, we thought it would be a good | 1:14:10 | 1:14:16
idea to make our wake out of the
area. We went past where the stables | 1:14:16 | 1:14:22
were and I know that the horses had
been taken out of the main arena, | 1:14:22 | 1:14:26
the ones who were competing, they
were in the temporary stables but | 1:14:26 | 1:14:30
what became apparent, all of the
smoke was then blowing from the | 1:14:30 | 1:14:35
arena into the temporary stabling.
So the horses had to be gotten out | 1:14:35 | 1:14:39
just in case they became overcome
with the fumes. And everyone was | 1:14:39 | 1:14:46
mucking in helping get the horses
out of their to the safety of the | 1:14:46 | 1:14:50
horse boxes which were parked around
the corner. We are very grateful to | 1:14:50 | 1:14:55
you for talking to us, you made it
home safely I presume because they | 1:14:55 | 1:14:59
think you said you parked somewhere
else? Very lucky that we parked | 1:14:59 | 1:15:03
somewhere else, if we had gotten
their earlier we would have also had | 1:15:03 | 1:15:06
been parked in there so very lucky.
Grateful to you for your time, thank | 1:15:06 | 1:15:11
you, Paul, and happy New Year. 7:15
AM, let's take a look at the weather | 1:15:11 | 1:15:21
if you are up right and early. | 1:15:21 | 1:15:24
The Weather Is Not Too Bad. Happy
New Year. It Is Looking Unsettled To | 1:15:29 | 1:15:36
Start The Fascinating. Windy for a
time. Two areas of low pressure. Wet | 1:15:36 | 1:15:47
weather to Northern Ireland. This
area of low pressure will batter | 1:15:47 | 1:15:54
France. A spell of wet and windy
weather to southern counties of | 1:15:54 | 1:15:57
England in south Wales. Thundery
showers to the south-west. They will | 1:15:57 | 1:16:03
go east in the next hour or so.
Spells of sunshine in the Midlands | 1:16:03 | 1:16:09
and north. Breezy. Showers in
Northern Ireland in Scotland. Gale | 1:16:09 | 1:16:18
force winds through Northern
Ireland. They will go south into | 1:16:18 | 1:16:23
northern England and North Wales.
Blustery showers. Wintry on the high | 1:16:23 | 1:16:26
ground. Improving in the south.
Sunshine. A bit cooler. 7- ten. | 1:16:26 | 1:16:37
Light winds. A chilly night.
Changing in the west. The next area | 1:16:37 | 1:16:42
of low pressure moving in. We could
see a touch of frost in the north. | 1:16:42 | 1:16:50
That is Tuesday. Cold and bright in
central and eastern areas. The wet | 1:16:50 | 1:16:55
and windy weather will go east
through the day. Snow in the | 1:16:55 | 1:16:58
Pennines and for the Scottish hills.
Behind that, skies brightened up. | 1:16:58 | 1:17:02
Blustery blustery showers moving in.
Mild in the south. The next area of | 1:17:02 | 1:17:09
low pressure will be nasty. A spell
of severe gales and heavy rain at | 1:17:09 | 1:17:15
times. Clearing on Wednesday
morning. Blustery and windy, | 1:17:15 | 1:17:18
especially in the west. Gales.
Showers in western areas. Sunny | 1:17:18 | 1:17:23
spells in the east. 8- 10 degrees.
The rest of the week looking | 1:17:23 | 1:17:29
unsettled. Low pressure bringing
spells of wind and rain. A little | 1:17:29 | 1:17:34
bit of sunshine in between. That
will continue as we go on | 1:17:34 | 1:17:38
bit of sunshine in between. That
will continue as we go on towards | 1:17:38 | 1:17:38
the weekend. Thank you very much. We
will speak to you a little bit later | 1:17:38 | 1:17:43
on. | 1:17:43 | 1:17:47 | |
The start of the new year has
many of us reflecting on the past 12 | 1:17:47 | 1:17:51
months and what we want
to differently in the year ahead. | 1:17:51 | 1:17:54
We've been asking people
in Manchester what they hope | 1:17:54 | 1:17:56
to achieve in 2018. | 1:17:56 | 1:17:57
So, why do we set ourselves
resolutions, and how can we make | 1:17:57 | 1:18:01
sure we stick to them? | 1:18:01 | 1:18:02
I'm joined now by
psychotherapist, Emma Kenny. | 1:18:02 | 1:18:04
Thank you for getting up so early on
you use morning. -- on New Year's. | 1:18:04 | 1:18:09
Why are they so popular? Many people
make them. Sticking to them is the | 1:18:09 | 1:18:13
issue. By the 28th of January,
people have given up. That is | 1:18:13 | 1:18:21
because of the evidence behind why
they give up. It is therapeutic, | 1:18:21 | 1:18:31
though. Goalsetting is helpful and
means you can recognise your success | 1:18:31 | 1:18:35
in the past and you can see what you
are attributing success to as you | 1:18:35 | 1:18:40
move towards things. Yesterday we
were talking to the mental health | 1:18:40 | 1:18:45
foundation. They said sometimes you
can put too much pressure on | 1:18:45 | 1:18:49
yourself. Absolutely. The big
problem with setting goals is people | 1:18:49 | 1:18:55
overwhelmed themselves. They will
not say I have this priority to deal | 1:18:55 | 1:19:00
with. Look at health. You cannot say
I want to be healthier, you cannot, | 1:19:00 | 1:19:05
because it is too fluffy. So we have
to have one priority area. Once you | 1:19:05 | 1:19:12
have mastered that, move on. Did you
have chocolate? I gave it up last | 1:19:12 | 1:19:18
year. I just had dark chocolate.
What I did was make it specific. I | 1:19:18 | 1:19:22
gave it up. It is the same with
going to the gym. If you say I will | 1:19:22 | 1:19:28
go to the gym, you will not. If you
say I will go outside ten minutes | 1:19:28 | 1:19:33
every day and then go once a week to
the gym with my friend, you make it | 1:19:33 | 1:19:38
more specific, and easier to stick
with. Do not say I will lose weight, | 1:19:38 | 1:19:44
meet a new partner, go travelling,
it will not happen. Goals are good | 1:19:44 | 1:19:51
thing? Yeah. Do they make you more
successful generally if you are a | 1:19:51 | 1:19:57
target focused person? If you look
at research, it is very strong, any | 1:19:57 | 1:20:07
goalsetting is effective. Basically,
small and measurable and achievable | 1:20:07 | 1:20:16
realistic goals. People use
different words. So, small, | 1:20:16 | 1:20:34
measurable, achievable, realistic,
and time-bound. That's SMART. You | 1:20:34 | 1:20:38
say I will lose £2 by not having big
lunches. -- two pounds. Have you got | 1:20:38 | 1:20:54
one this year? I will walk with my
children one day a week. It does not | 1:20:54 | 1:20:59
matter which day it is. Really?
Congratulations! Well done for | 1:20:59 | 1:21:03
persuading them. It is lovely to see
you. Happy New Year. Some good | 1:21:03 | 1:21:10
advice on New Year's resolutions.
Perhaps a few of them will be made | 1:21:10 | 1:21:16
in London. | 1:21:16 | 1:21:25
Around half a million people
are expected to turn out | 1:21:25 | 1:21:28
in Central London for the annual
New Year's Day Parade. | 1:21:28 | 1:21:31
Thousands of performers,
including marching bands, | 1:21:31 | 1:21:32
cheerleaders, and stunt drivers
are set to entertain the crowds. | 1:21:32 | 1:21:35
Not content with all
the frivolities last night. | 1:21:35 | 1:21:37
Breakfast's Graham Satchell
is getting a taste of the action | 1:21:37 | 1:21:40
for us this morning. | 1:21:40 | 1:21:41
Happy New Year. You are not alone.
We are not. We are surrounded by | 1:21:41 | 1:21:45
cheerleaders from various heights of
America. They are rehearsing, going | 1:21:45 | 1:21:48
through their final paces. It is
called the New Year's Day parade. It | 1:21:48 | 1:21:51
kicks off a 12 o'clock. This is one
of the cheerleaders. Good morning. | 1:21:51 | 1:21:55
Where are you from? The majority of
us are from Texas. Some, Louisiana. | 1:21:55 | 1:21:59
Have you been to London before? This
is my first time out of the US. And | 1:21:59 | 1:22:06
what do you think what you are
today? Today is just so exciting. | 1:22:06 | 1:22:09
The parade is super, like, we are
also pumped and ready for this. | 1:22:09 | 1:22:16
Happy New Year. Good luck. Happy New
Year. As well as cheerleaders, we | 1:22:16 | 1:22:22
have many different things. You can
see some stunt riders. They are from | 1:22:22 | 1:22:33
Stunted Reality. There are two of
them doing things I would not | 1:22:33 | 1:22:36
recommend doing if you are hung on
New Year's Day. And this person is | 1:22:36 | 1:22:40
hopefully going to jump over a Jeep!
Good job. He is from Moto Stunt | 1:22:40 | 1:22:49
International. And now a marching
band from Troy in Ohio. They funded | 1:22:49 | 1:22:55
their trip today by selling
thousands and thousands of | 1:22:55 | 1:22:58
doughnuts, believe it or not. I will
chat to the lord mayor of | 1:22:58 | 1:23:04
Westminster. Good morning. Good
morning. This New Year's Day parade | 1:23:04 | 1:23:09
has been going on for 30 years. Why
did it start? It is a time of year | 1:23:09 | 1:23:14
with shops closing and museums and
galleries shutting. It is a great | 1:23:14 | 1:23:18
way for Westminster to showcase some
of the best things we have to offer. | 1:23:18 | 1:23:24
What do you think are the highlights
today? A variety. It is great to | 1:23:24 | 1:23:29
have American bands from the US. Top
performing bands. Each of them have | 1:23:29 | 1:23:36
a float. We have inflatables, stunt
drivers, the variety is the | 1:23:36 | 1:23:40
highlight. It is really an occasion
for families, I suppose, and people | 1:23:40 | 1:23:48
who work and who are completely
drunk overnight. Yet. It is a good | 1:23:48 | 1:23:52
way to get rid of the early morning
blues. You are hosting the event | 1:23:52 | 1:23:58
today. Good luck. Thank you very
much. Happy New Year. The whole | 1:23:58 | 1:24:02
thing kicks off at 12 o'clock today.
It starts at Green Park, goes | 1:24:02 | 1:24:11
through Picadilly, and ends up in
Parliament Square. If you are | 1:24:11 | 1:24:14
feeling hungover and want to get rid
of the cobwebs, you could do worse. | 1:24:14 | 1:24:18
That is it from us. Thank you. And
thank you to your guests. It is | 1:24:18 | 1:24:24
great to see you at such an ungodly
hour. | 1:24:24 | 1:24:32 | |
It was almost a stunning end to the
year. Crystal Palace came so close | 1:24:32 | 1:24:38
to ending the unbeaten run of
Manchester City. | 1:24:38 | 1:24:41
Late penalty drama in both
of yesterday's Premier League games. | 1:24:41 | 1:24:44
Crystal Palace missed a late one
to snatch a win over leaders | 1:24:44 | 1:24:47
Manchester City, as their 18 match
unbeaten run came to an end | 1:24:47 | 1:24:51
yesterday, while West Brom salvaged
a point with a dubious penalty over | 1:24:51 | 1:24:54
Arsenal. | 1:24:54 | 1:24:54
Adam Wild rounds up the action. | 1:24:54 | 1:24:58
Still, it is rather hard to imagine
just how things could get any better | 1:24:58 | 1:25:00
The message from fans
was clear enough. | 1:25:01 | 1:25:02
Still, it is rather hard to imagine
just how things could get any better | 1:25:02 | 1:25:06
for Manchester City. | 1:25:06 | 1:25:07
Never has a team been so far ahead
at the end of the year. | 1:25:07 | 1:25:11
To their potential, well,
there seems no end. | 1:25:11 | 1:25:13
But against Crystal Palace, this
was a new year lacking celebration. | 1:25:13 | 1:25:16
Gabriel Jesus, injured,
leaving in tears. | 1:25:16 | 1:25:18
It was his replacement,
Sergio Aguero, who went the closest | 1:25:18 | 1:25:20
in the first half. | 1:25:20 | 1:25:21
But this was not the brilliance
from City that all have | 1:25:21 | 1:25:24
come to fear. | 1:25:24 | 1:25:25
Victory would have equalled
the European record. | 1:25:25 | 1:25:27
The target, then, straightforward. | 1:25:27 | 1:25:28
Hitting it, seemingly less so. | 1:25:28 | 1:25:30
But Palace are a side
with aims of their own. | 1:25:30 | 1:25:32
They did have chances
with which they should | 1:25:32 | 1:25:34
have done better. | 1:25:34 | 1:25:35
Everyone seemed to know it. | 1:25:35 | 1:25:37
And that, ultimately, for them,
is how this will be remembered. | 1:25:37 | 1:25:40
In the 90th minute,
awarded a penalty. | 1:25:40 | 1:25:42
Luca, though, unable to see
the year out with a bang. | 1:25:42 | 1:25:45
So, not quite the perfect end
to 2017 for either side. | 1:25:45 | 1:25:48
For both, New Year's Eve,
as is so often the case, | 1:25:48 | 1:25:50
a bit of an anticlimax. | 1:25:50 | 1:25:52
Elsewhere, a big day on the calendar
of a rather different sort. | 1:25:52 | 1:25:55
At West Brom, Arsene Wenger took
charge of Arsenal for the 811th | 1:25:55 | 1:25:58
Premier League game, a new record. | 1:25:58 | 1:26:00
But there was much work to be done
before any celebrations would be | 1:26:00 | 1:26:04
allowed to start. | 1:26:04 | 1:26:04
His team certainly made him wait. | 1:26:04 | 1:26:06
It wasn't until the second half
before they found a way through. | 1:26:06 | 1:26:17
And even then it took
a bit of fortune. | 1:26:17 | 1:26:19
Alexis Sanchez' free
kick, deflected. | 1:26:19 | 1:26:21
But that was still far
from the end of it. | 1:26:21 | 1:26:23
Two minutes remaining,
West Brom were offered a hand | 1:26:23 | 1:26:26
back into it. | 1:26:26 | 1:26:27
This, deemed a penalty. | 1:26:27 | 1:26:28
And Jay Rodriguez gladly spoiled
Arsene Wenger's special day. | 1:26:28 | 1:26:30
1-1. | 1:26:30 | 1:26:42 | |
A year laden with controversy
and drama to the very end. | 1:26:42 | 1:26:54
And plenty more Premier League
action starting off today. | 1:26:54 | 1:27:01
Exeter Chiefs start the new year ten
points clear at the top | 1:27:01 | 1:27:04
of the Rugby Union Premiership. | 1:27:04 | 1:27:05
They beat Leicester 30 points
to six, with four second half tries | 1:27:05 | 1:27:09
at Sandy Park. | 1:27:09 | 1:27:09
That's Tiger's sixth
league defeat in a row, | 1:27:09 | 1:27:11
their worst run in over 50 years. | 1:27:11 | 1:27:13
Alex Gulrajani reports. | 1:27:13 | 1:27:14
2017 will go down as
a great year in Exeter. | 1:27:14 | 1:27:17
Champions for the first time, Devon,
now a must-stop shop | 1:27:17 | 1:27:27
for the England head coach. | 1:27:27 | 1:27:28
And with the Chiefs clear
at the top of the table, | 1:27:28 | 1:27:31
2018 could be memorable as well. | 1:27:31 | 1:27:33
The only points early
against Leicester from the boot. | 1:27:33 | 1:27:35
The hands were making
far too many errors. | 1:27:35 | 1:27:37
Chances missed. | 1:27:37 | 1:27:38
And they were keeping in touch
thanks to George Ford. | 1:27:38 | 1:27:44
It took root strength to put
the league leaders in charge. | 1:27:44 | 1:27:47
Don carried them over. | 1:27:47 | 1:27:48
And now, a gap emerged
between the sides. | 1:27:48 | 1:27:50
Exeter certainly needed no help,
yet Jonny May was in a giving mood. | 1:27:50 | 1:27:54
Straight into the arms
of Henry Slade. | 1:27:54 | 1:27:56
The simplest of finishes. | 1:27:56 | 1:27:57
And those supporters may well have
stayed on their feet, | 1:27:57 | 1:28:00
as Johnny Hill went
over not long after. | 1:28:00 | 1:28:02
And there was still time for more. | 1:28:02 | 1:28:04
A bonus point-winning try
with the last play of the game. | 1:28:04 | 1:28:07
Jack, with the perfect
end to a monumental | 1:28:07 | 1:28:09
year for Exeter. | 1:28:09 | 1:28:10
BBC News. | 1:28:10 | 1:28:14
Scarlets won away at Cardiff Blues
14-11 in the Pro-14. | 1:28:14 | 1:28:17
Cardiff led at half time
but Scarlets fought back soon | 1:28:17 | 1:28:20
after the break. | 1:28:20 | 1:28:21
Rhys Patchell's try,
their second of the match, | 1:28:21 | 1:28:23
sealed the win. | 1:28:23 | 1:28:23
The victory leaves them
top of Conference B. | 1:28:23 | 1:28:35
British number one Johanna Konta
starts her season today with a match | 1:28:35 | 1:28:39
against the American Madison Keys
at the Brisbane International. | 1:28:39 | 1:28:41
It's her first tournament
with new coach Michael Joyce | 1:28:41 | 1:28:43
and she says they are looking
forward to starting | 1:28:43 | 1:28:46
the season together. | 1:28:46 | 1:29:08
England's cricketers have
arrived in Sydney ahead | 1:29:08 | 1:29:10
of the Final Ashes Test which begins
in three days' time. | 1:29:10 | 1:29:13
England head coach, Trevor Bayliss,
says he still has full belief | 1:29:13 | 1:29:16
in all-rounder, Moeen Ali,
despite his recent run of poor form. | 1:29:16 | 1:29:19
The 30-year-old has only taken three
wickets and averaged 19 runs | 1:29:19 | 1:29:22
with the bat this series. | 1:29:22 | 1:29:23
He is always a guy that
likes to keep playing. | 1:29:23 | 1:29:26
But... | 1:29:26 | 1:29:26
I have full confidence
in him going forward, | 1:29:26 | 1:29:28
to be honest. | 1:29:28 | 1:29:29
I mean, it was only two months ago
we were talking about him being one | 1:29:29 | 1:29:33
of the best all-rounders
in the world. | 1:29:33 | 1:29:35
Now, he reached the milestone,
what was it, 2000 runs | 1:29:35 | 1:29:38
and 100 wickets. | 1:29:38 | 1:29:38
He got that quicker
than everyone else. | 1:29:38 | 1:29:49
So, there we go, just three days
until it starts again. One last | 1:29:49 | 1:29:53
chance to salvage some pride. Thank
you. Stay with us. Headlines are on | 1:29:53 | 1:30:00
the way. | 1:30:00 | 1:30:03

when a seaplane crashed in Australia | 1:30:53 | 1:30:57

to the city's arena. | 1:31:23 | 1:31:26
No-one was hurt, but residents
in nearby apartments were evacuated | 1:31:26 | 1:31:29
as the fire service tackled
the blaze which it describes as one | 1:31:29 | 1:31:32
of the worst it had ever dealt with. | 1:31:32 | 1:31:37

since current records began, | 1:31:37 | 1:31:40
according to figures
from a transport watchdog. | 1:31:40 | 1:31:42
Passengers are travelling
in carriages which were typically | 1:31:42 | 1:31:44
built in the mid 1990s. | 1:31:44 | 1:31:47
The Office of Rail and Road says
older rolling stock can lead | 1:31:47 | 1:31:51
to problems with reliability
and poorer performance. | 1:31:51 | 1:31:52
The Department for Transport says
4,50 new carriages will be | 1:31:52 | 1:31:55

-- The Department for Transport says

The President of Iran
has appealed for calm, | 1:32:06 | 1:32:08
saying people would have the right
to protest but not to commit acts | 1:32:08 | 1:32:12
of violence, amid continuing
anti-government protests. | 1:32:12 | 1:32:14
In his first public comments
since demonstrations | 1:32:14 | 1:32:16
against the government began
on Thursday, Hassan Rouhani warned | 1:32:16 | 1:32:18
that violence and public disorder
would not be tolerated. | 1:32:18 | 1:32:22
The North Korean leader has said
that he has a nuclear button | 1:32:22 | 1:32:25
on his desk. | 1:32:25 | 1:32:26
In a defiant New Year message,
Kim Jong-un says now that | 1:32:26 | 1:32:29
North Korea had developed
the capability to hit all of the US | 1:32:29 | 1:32:32
mainland with its nuclear weapons,
Washington would never start a war. | 1:32:32 | 1:32:36

He said 2018 could be defined
either by human suffering | 1:32:58 | 1:33:00
or the compassionate response to it. | 1:33:00 | 1:33:07
You up-to-date with all of the main
stories. We will be back with the | 1:33:12 | 1:33:17
headlines at ATM. | 1:33:17 | 1:33:21
From the engagement of Prince Harry
and Meghan Markle, to the retirement | 1:33:21 | 1:33:24
from royal duties of the Duke
of Edinburgh, Sarah Campbell looks | 1:33:24 | 1:33:27
back on the key events in Review
2017: The Royal Year. | 1:33:27 | 1:33:29
REPORTER: Congratulations
from all of us! | 1:33:41 | 1:33:42
How are you both feeling? | 1:33:42 | 1:33:54
Um, thrilled. | 1:33:54 | 1:33:55
This was the year in which Prince
Harry introduced his new leading | 1:33:55 | 1:33:58
lady, the American
actress, Meghan Markle. | 1:33:58 | 1:34:00
The fact that I fell in love
with Meghan so incredibly quickly, | 1:34:00 | 1:34:03
was sort of confirmation
to me that everything, | 1:34:03 | 1:34:05
all the stars were aligned,
everything was perfect. | 1:34:05 | 1:34:08
After 70 years of public service,
the Duke of Edinburgh, | 1:34:08 | 1:34:11
Britain's longest-serving
Royal Consort hung up his hat | 1:34:11 | 1:34:13
and retired from royal duties. | 1:34:13 | 1:34:20
Prince George had his
own milestone moment - | 1:34:20 | 1:34:22
his first day of school. | 1:34:22 | 1:34:30
And flexing their royal muscles
in an effort to put the issue | 1:34:30 | 1:34:34
of mental health firmly
on the national agenda. | 1:34:34 | 1:34:43
After weeks of fevered speculation
came confirmation that Prince Harry, | 1:34:43 | 1:34:47
the fifth in line to the throne,
was engaged to the American actress, | 1:34:47 | 1:34:50
Meghan Markle. | 1:34:50 | 1:34:53
The happy couple appeared
in the grounds of Kensington Palace, | 1:34:53 | 1:34:56
which will be her new home. | 1:34:56 | 1:34:58
This was only the second time
they had appeared together | 1:34:58 | 1:35:01
for the cameras. | 1:35:01 | 1:35:02
REPORTER: Harry, when did
you know she was the one? | 1:35:02 | 1:35:04
The very first time we met! | 1:35:04 | 1:35:10
Later, in a candid interview
with the BBC's Mishal Husain, | 1:35:10 | 1:35:12
they revealed they'd met on a blind
date set up by a mutual friend. | 1:35:12 | 1:35:17
In early November, while preparing
a roast chicken dinner, | 1:35:17 | 1:35:20
Harry popped the question. | 1:35:20 | 1:35:22
It was just an amazing surprise. | 1:35:22 | 1:35:24
It was so sweet and natural
and very romantic. | 1:35:24 | 1:35:28
He got on one knee. | 1:35:28 | 1:35:29
Of course. | 1:35:29 | 1:35:30
Was that an instant yes from you? | 1:35:30 | 1:35:32
Yes, as a matter of fact, I could
barely let him finish proposing. | 1:35:32 | 1:35:35
I said, "Can I say yes now?!" | 1:35:35 | 1:35:37
She didn't even let me finish. | 1:35:37 | 1:35:39
She said, "Can I say
yes, can I say yes?" | 1:35:39 | 1:35:42
Then there was hugs and I had
the ring in my finger. | 1:35:42 | 1:35:45
I was like, "Can I
give you the ring?" | 1:35:45 | 1:35:47
She was, like, "Oh, yes, the ring!" | 1:35:47 | 1:35:49
So, no, it was a really nice moment,
just the two of us, and I think | 1:35:49 | 1:35:54
I managed to catch her
by surprise as well. | 1:35:54 | 1:35:56
The fact that I fell in love
with Meghan so incredibly quickly | 1:35:56 | 1:36:00
was sort of confirmation
to me that everything, | 1:36:00 | 1:36:02
all of the stars were aligned,
everything was just perfect. | 1:36:02 | 1:36:04
It was this beautiful woman had just
sort of literally tripped and fell | 1:36:04 | 1:36:08
into my life, I had fell
into her life, and the fact that | 1:36:08 | 1:36:11
I know that she will be unbelievably
good at the job part of it as well, | 1:36:11 | 1:36:16
is obviously a huge relief to me
because she will be able to deal | 1:36:16 | 1:36:20
with everything else
that comes with it. | 1:36:20 | 1:36:22
In the case of your relationship,
unlike for most people, | 1:36:22 | 1:36:24
there is this whole layer of what it
means to get involved with someone | 1:36:24 | 1:36:28
from the Royal Family. | 1:36:28 | 1:36:29
How much of a sense did you have,
Meghan, of the enormity | 1:36:29 | 1:36:32
of what you were getting into? | 1:36:32 | 1:36:34
What it might mean for your life? | 1:36:34 | 1:36:36
I think I can very safely say,
as naive as it sounds now, | 1:36:36 | 1:36:39
having gone through this learning
curve in the past year and a half, | 1:36:39 | 1:36:43
I didn't have any understanding
of just what it would be like. | 1:36:43 | 1:36:46
I don't think either of us did,
we both said that, even though | 1:36:46 | 1:36:50
we knew that it would be... | 1:36:50 | 1:36:52
I tried to warn you as much
as possible but I think both of us | 1:36:52 | 1:36:56
were totally surprised
by the reaction after the first | 1:36:56 | 1:36:58
five, six months that we had
to ourselves, of what actually | 1:36:58 | 1:37:01
happened from then. | 1:37:01 | 1:37:03
So I think you can have as many
conversations as you want | 1:37:03 | 1:37:06
and try to prepare as much
as possible but we were totally | 1:37:06 | 1:37:09
unprepared for what
happened after that. | 1:37:09 | 1:37:11
The scrutiny? | 1:37:11 | 1:37:12
Well, all sorts. | 1:37:12 | 1:37:14
And some of that scrutiny -
and you ended up making a very | 1:37:14 | 1:37:17
public statement about it -
some of that scrutiny was centred | 1:37:17 | 1:37:20
around your ethnicity, Meghan,
when you realized that, | 1:37:20 | 1:37:22
what did you think? | 1:37:22 | 1:37:24
Of course it is disheartening. | 1:37:24 | 1:37:28
You know, it is a shame that
that is the climate in this world, | 1:37:28 | 1:37:31
to focus that much on that,
or that that would be discriminatory | 1:37:31 | 1:37:35
in that sense, but I think,
at the end of the day, | 1:37:35 | 1:37:38
I am really just proud of who I am
and where I come from and we have | 1:37:38 | 1:37:43
never put any focus on that,
we have just focused | 1:37:43 | 1:37:45
on who we are as a couple. | 1:37:45 | 1:37:49
It is an immense change,
you are getting a new country out | 1:37:49 | 1:37:52
of it, a husband, obviously,
but also giving up your career. | 1:37:52 | 1:37:58
Sounds nice, doesn't it? | 1:37:58 | 1:37:59
Yes, it does sound nice. | 1:37:59 | 1:38:00
But I don't see it as giving
anything up, I just see it | 1:38:00 | 1:38:04
as a change. | 1:38:04 | 1:38:05
It is a new challenge. | 1:38:05 | 1:38:06
It is a new chapter. | 1:38:06 | 1:38:08
And also keep in mind, I have been
working on my show seven years. | 1:38:08 | 1:38:14
So we were very, very fortunate
to be able to have that sort | 1:38:14 | 1:38:17
of longevity on a series and,
for me, once we hit the 100 episode | 1:38:17 | 1:38:21
mark, I thought, you know what? | 1:38:21 | 1:38:23
I have ticked this box and I feel
very proud of the work I have done | 1:38:23 | 1:38:27
there and now it is time,
as you said, work as a team | 1:38:27 | 1:38:31
with you? | 1:38:31 | 1:38:33
And Meghan, your parents,
do you think while very happy | 1:38:33 | 1:38:36
for you, obviously, do you think
they have worried about the scale | 1:38:36 | 1:38:39
of what you're getting into? | 1:38:39 | 1:38:42
Well, I'm sure at the onset,
both my parents and my close | 1:38:42 | 1:38:45
friends were concerned
because we got very quickly swept up | 1:38:45 | 1:38:48
in a media storm that was not part
of my life before that but they also | 1:38:48 | 1:38:52
had never seen me so happy. | 1:38:52 | 1:38:59
And once my friends were able
to really meet Harry and my mum, | 1:38:59 | 1:39:02
who we spent a lot of time with,
it was so much fun. | 1:39:02 | 1:39:08
Your mum is amazing. | 1:39:08 | 1:39:10
It was just obvious that,
no matter what we were being put | 1:39:10 | 1:39:15
through, that it was just temporary
and that we were going to be able | 1:39:15 | 1:39:19
to get through that
so everybody was really happy. | 1:39:19 | 1:39:23
He's talked to my dad a few times,
he has not been able to meet him | 1:39:23 | 1:39:27
just yet, but it has
all been worth every effort. | 1:39:27 | 1:39:31
Have you met the Queen? | 1:39:31 | 1:39:32
I have, yes. | 1:39:32 | 1:39:33
A couple of times. | 1:39:33 | 1:39:34
What was that like? | 1:39:34 | 1:39:35
It is incredible. | 1:39:35 | 1:39:39
To be able to meet through his lens,
not just with his honour and respect | 1:39:39 | 1:39:43
for her as the monarch,
but the love that he has | 1:39:43 | 1:39:46
for her as his grandmother. | 1:39:46 | 1:39:50
All of those layers have been
so important for me, | 1:39:50 | 1:39:53
when I met her I had such
a deep understanding and, | 1:39:53 | 1:39:56
of course, incredible
respect for being able | 1:39:56 | 1:39:58
to have the time with her. | 1:39:58 | 1:40:01
She is an incredible woman. | 1:40:01 | 1:40:04
And the corgis took
to you straightaway! | 1:40:04 | 1:40:07
That's true. | 1:40:07 | 1:40:07
For the last 33 years
I have been barked at! | 1:40:07 | 1:40:10
This one walks in and just
absolutely nothing. | 1:40:10 | 1:40:12
Just laying on my feet
during tea, it was very sweet. | 1:40:12 | 1:40:15
Your ring, tell us about your ring. | 1:40:15 | 1:40:19
The ring is obviously yellow gold
because that is her favourite. | 1:40:19 | 1:40:25
And the main stone itself I sourced
from Botswana and the little | 1:40:25 | 1:40:28
diamonds either side
are from my mother's jewellery | 1:40:28 | 1:40:32
collection to make sure
she is with us on this | 1:40:32 | 1:40:34
crazy journey together. | 1:40:34 | 1:40:37
It is beautiful, and he designed it. | 1:40:37 | 1:40:40
It is incredible. | 1:40:40 | 1:40:42
Yeah. | 1:40:42 | 1:40:43 | |
Make sure it stays on that finger! | 1:40:43 | 1:40:46
Of course! | 1:40:46 | 1:40:48
What does it mean to you to have
those stones on your finger, | 1:40:48 | 1:40:51
that once belonged
to Princess Diana? | 1:40:51 | 1:40:54
I think everything about Harry's
thoughtfulness and the inclusion | 1:40:54 | 1:40:59
of that and obviously not
being able to meet his Mom, | 1:40:59 | 1:41:05
it is so important for me to know
that she is a part of this with us. | 1:41:05 | 1:41:10
What do you think your mother
would have thought of Meghan | 1:41:10 | 1:41:13
or said about Meghan? | 1:41:13 | 1:41:14
They would have been as thick
as thieves, without question. | 1:41:14 | 1:41:18
She would be over the moon,
jumping up and down, | 1:41:18 | 1:41:21
so excited for me. | 1:41:21 | 1:41:23
She would have probably been best
friends with Meghan. | 1:41:23 | 1:41:28
It is days like today that I really
miss having her around | 1:41:28 | 1:41:34
and being able to share the happy
news but with the ring | 1:41:34 | 1:41:37
and with everything else
going on, I'm sure she's... | 1:41:37 | 1:41:40
She's with us. | 1:41:40 | 1:41:40
I am sure she is with us, yeah,
jumping up and down somewhere else. | 1:41:40 | 1:41:47
Meghan's soon-to-be in-laws
could not have been happier. | 1:41:47 | 1:41:49
REPORTER: Congratulations, sir. | 1:41:49 | 1:41:50
What do you think
about the engagement? | 1:41:50 | 1:41:52
Very kind. | 1:41:52 | 1:41:52
We are thrilled, thank you very
much, for both of them. | 1:41:52 | 1:41:55
I hope they'll be very happy indeed. | 1:41:55 | 1:41:57
That is all I can say. | 1:41:57 | 1:41:59
Absolutely thrilled,
it is brilliant. | 1:41:59 | 1:42:00
As I said, America's
loss is our gain. | 1:42:00 | 1:42:04
For me personally, I hope it means
he stays out of my fridge! | 1:42:04 | 1:42:08
Stop him scrounging off of my food
as he's done in the last few years! | 1:42:08 | 1:42:12
Deeply excited. | 1:42:12 | 1:42:13
Despite freezing temperatures,
the people of Nottingham gave them | 1:42:13 | 1:42:15
a very warm welcome. | 1:42:15 | 1:42:21
This was Meghan's first royal
walkabout and she handled | 1:42:21 | 1:42:24
it with aplomb. | 1:42:24 | 1:42:25
She seems really full of life
and down to earth as well. | 1:42:25 | 1:42:31
My gosh, actually, I think
she is wonderful, I watched | 1:42:31 | 1:42:34
interviews and everything,
I think she is great. | 1:42:34 | 1:42:38
Meghan has committed to the UK. | 1:42:38 | 1:42:40
She will apply for British
citizenship and has left Suits, | 1:42:40 | 1:42:42
the TV show which made her famous. | 1:42:42 | 1:42:45
Thank you so much. | 1:42:45 | 1:42:48
Congratulations! | 1:42:48 | 1:42:52
Royal fans have until May
to get their flags and hats ready | 1:42:52 | 1:42:55
for the couple's wedding
at Windsor Castle. | 1:42:55 | 1:42:59
A very cold day here in Nottingham
does seem a world away | 1:42:59 | 1:43:02
from Los Angeles and the acting
world but this is what Meghan Markle | 1:43:02 | 1:43:06
is now signed up to. | 1:43:06 | 1:43:09
She will be meeting the public
across the UK and the Commonwealth, | 1:43:09 | 1:43:12
she has become a key
member of Team Windsor, | 1:43:12 | 1:43:14
in the same year as another
key member has finally | 1:43:14 | 1:43:17
announced his retirement. | 1:43:17 | 1:43:24
For seven decades, this
is an image to which the public | 1:43:24 | 1:43:27
has become accustomed. | 1:43:27 | 1:43:28
The Queen accompanied by Britain's
longest-serving consort, | 1:43:28 | 1:43:31
Prince Philip, together with him
a couple of steps behind. | 1:43:31 | 1:43:36
This was a significant day
as the announcement had just been | 1:43:36 | 1:43:39
made that he was to retire
from public duties. | 1:43:39 | 1:43:44
He was in customary good humour,
chatting to the members of the Order | 1:43:44 | 1:43:47
of Merit, swapping stories
about hearing aids... | 1:43:47 | 1:43:49
We have all got them! | 1:43:49 | 1:43:50
..and joking about retirement. | 1:43:50 | 1:43:58
"Standing down, I can't stand up
much longer," he replied. | 1:43:58 | 1:44:05
The Duke's decision was not
health-related but, at 96, | 1:44:05 | 1:44:08
he felt he had done his bit. | 1:44:08 | 1:44:11
As he had remarked
the previous day... | 1:44:11 | 1:44:13
You are seeing the world's most
experienced plaque unveiler. | 1:44:13 | 1:44:17
LAUGHTER. | 1:44:17 | 1:44:19
It was a surprise but not
really a surprise. | 1:44:19 | 1:44:22
Although having for many
years heard it is a job | 1:44:22 | 1:44:24
from which you cannot retire. | 1:44:24 | 1:44:28
He has just proved that actually it
might be possible to retire, | 1:44:28 | 1:44:31
which is quite good
for the rest of us. | 1:44:31 | 1:44:33
Whenever he's been,
wherever in the world, | 1:44:33 | 1:44:35
people will continue to remember him
and will continue to remember him, | 1:44:35 | 1:44:39
and you can't really get
a better accolade than that. | 1:44:39 | 1:44:41
Over the years, the Duke
has completed more than | 1:44:41 | 1:44:44
22,000 solo engagements. | 1:44:44 | 1:44:48
Encouraged millions of young people
in more than 60 countries | 1:44:48 | 1:44:50
to challenge themselves through
the Duke of Edinburgh's awards. | 1:44:50 | 1:44:54
Where did you do your expedition? | 1:44:54 | 1:44:56
I did it in the north... | 1:44:56 | 1:44:57
Did you get lost? | 1:44:57 | 1:44:59
A bit. | 1:44:59 | 1:45:02 | |
ARCHIVE: And he had time to discuss
with Indian officials | 1:45:02 | 1:45:05
the problems of conserving... | 1:45:05 | 1:45:06
And been an early advocate
of environmental issues | 1:45:06 | 1:45:09
through his Presidency
of the World Wildlife Fund. | 1:45:09 | 1:45:12
But it'll be his unwavering support
for the Queen in this, | 1:45:12 | 1:45:15
the year of their platinum
wedding anniversary, | 1:45:15 | 1:45:17
which will be seen as his
greatest achievement. | 1:45:17 | 1:45:25
They were married in 1947. | 1:45:34 | 1:45:35
In the gloom of post-war Britain,
their wedding was described | 1:45:35 | 1:45:38
by Sir Winston Churchill
as a flash of colour. | 1:45:38 | 1:45:40
She, the future Queen,
and he the dashing Naval officer. | 1:45:40 | 1:45:43
In the years since he has travelled
the world with her and been her | 1:45:43 | 1:45:47
companion both in
public and private. | 1:45:47 | 1:45:48
In June it was illness rather
than retirement which prevented | 1:45:48 | 1:45:51
the Duke from being at the Queen's
side at the State Opening of | 1:45:51 | 1:45:55
Parliament. | 1:45:55 | 1:46:07
Prince Charles took his place. | 1:46:07 | 1:46:08
But going forward, this
will become the norm and, | 1:46:08 | 1:46:10
although the palace has been keen
to emphasise that for the Queen | 1:46:10 | 1:46:14
it is still business as usual,
the gradual transition of roles | 1:46:14 | 1:46:17
and responsibilities from one
generation to the next has | 1:46:17 | 1:46:19
noticeably accelerated this year. | 1:46:19 | 1:46:22
LAST POST SOUNDS. | 1:46:22 | 1:46:23
Most significantly in November. | 1:46:23 | 1:46:24
For the first time in her 65-year
reign, the Queen was present | 1:46:24 | 1:46:27
at the service of Remembrance
at the Cenotaph, in London, | 1:46:27 | 1:46:30
but she did not lay a wreath. | 1:46:30 | 1:46:49
Instead, she watched
from the Foreign Office balcony, | 1:46:49 | 1:46:51
alongside her husband,
as her son and heir laid a wreath | 1:46:51 | 1:46:54
on her behalf. | 1:46:54 | 1:46:55
The Duke will continue to support
the Queen at events of his choosing. | 1:46:55 | 1:46:58
GOD SAVE THE QUEEN PLAYS. | 1:46:58 | 1:47:00
But this was his final
official public engagement. | 1:47:00 | 1:47:02
Fittingly for a former Royal Navy
officer, it was a parade | 1:47:02 | 1:47:05
for the Royal Marines in front
of the palace which has | 1:47:05 | 1:47:08
been his London home
for so many decades. | 1:47:08 | 1:47:10
ROYAL MARINES: Hip hip hooray! | 1:47:10 | 1:47:11
Hip hip hooray! | 1:47:11 | 1:47:12
Hip hip hooray! | 1:47:12 | 1:47:13
The band's rousing send-off
could not have been more | 1:47:13 | 1:47:15
appropriate. | 1:47:15 | 1:47:21
BAND PLAYS FOR HE'S
A JOLLY GOOD FELLOW. | 1:47:21 | 1:47:33
The UK's exit from the EU edges ever
closer and new relationships need | 1:47:33 | 1:47:36
to be formed in Europe
and beyond and as this year has | 1:47:36 | 1:47:40
shown, the Royal Family is uniquely
placed to carry out soft diplomacy, | 1:47:40 | 1:47:43
spreading a little Stardust
while reinforcing those | 1:47:43 | 1:47:58
old bonds of friendship. | 1:47:58 | 1:47:59
APPLAUSE. | 1:47:59 | 1:47:59
In the United Kingdom,
Irish people make such | 1:47:59 | 1:48:17
an extraordinary and essential
contribution to so many parts | 1:48:17 | 1:48:20
of our society and our economy. | 1:48:20 | 1:48:22
Polish is a second most
spoken language in the UK, | 1:48:22 | 1:48:24
with the generation of young people
growing up who feel both | 1:48:24 | 1:48:27
British and Polish. | 1:48:27 | 1:48:48
APPLAUSE. | 1:49:04 | 1:49:08
September, and some
high-profile bilateral meetings | 1:49:08 | 1:49:10
for
Prince Harry in Canada. | 1:49:10 | 1:49:23
But this trip was not at the behest
of the Foreign Office. | 1:49:23 | 1:49:26
He was there to help
make his brainchild, | 1:49:26 | 1:49:28
the Invictus Games,
the biggest and best yet. | 1:49:28 | 1:49:30
For eight days, more
than 500 athletes from 17 | 1:49:30 | 1:49:33
countries took part. | 1:49:33 | 1:49:39
All of them had been damaged either
physically or mentally in the course | 1:49:39 | 1:49:43
of serving their countries. | 1:49:43 | 1:49:43
The Invictus Games where
Harry's idea to help them | 1:49:43 | 1:49:46
on their road to recovery. | 1:49:46 | 1:49:47
Right now, you are on a high,
at the summit of a mountain | 1:49:47 | 1:49:51
many of you thought
was too high to climb. | 1:49:51 | 1:49:53
You have done it, this
is the moment, right here, | 1:49:53 | 1:49:56
right now, shoulder
to shoulder, you are | 1:49:56 | 1:49:58
Invictus! | 1:49:58 | 1:49:58
APPLAUSE. | 1:49:58 | 1:50:03
The Sydney games will take place
in October in what is shaping up | 1:50:03 | 1:50:06
to be a busy 2018 for Prince Harry. | 1:50:06 | 1:50:08
Tonight on Panorama... | 1:50:08 | 1:50:09
The offshore secrets of the rich
and powerful alt in the open. | 1:50:09 | 1:50:21
In the year in which Royal headlines
were overwhelmingly positive, | 1:50:21 | 1:50:24
early November was
an early exception. | 1:50:24 | 1:50:25
The Queen and Prince Charles
were drawn into a global media story | 1:50:25 | 1:50:29
looking into offshore
investment funds. | 1:50:29 | 1:50:30
A leak of millions of documents
revealed that the Duchy | 1:50:30 | 1:50:36
of Lancaster, the Queen's private
estate, had invested £10 million | 1:50:36 | 1:50:39
in funds based in Bermuda
and the Cayman Islands. | 1:50:39 | 1:50:41
Not illegal but questions were asked
as to whether this should be held | 1:50:41 | 1:50:45
the monarch's cash
should be invested. | 1:50:45 | 1:50:47
As Prince Charles toured
the Far East, the same questions | 1:50:47 | 1:50:49
will be asked of his private estate,
the Duchy of Cornwall, | 1:50:49 | 1:50:52
as well as investing offshore,
the Prince was also accused | 1:50:52 | 1:51:01
of a conflict of interest in
relation to a particular investment. | 1:51:01 | 1:51:04
Clarence House was robust
in their denial of any wrongdoing. | 1:51:04 | 1:51:06
The fact that both the Queen
and the Prince of Wales voluntarily | 1:51:06 | 1:51:10
pay tax on income from the private
estates did not stop calls | 1:51:10 | 1:51:13
for greater transparency
in the Royal finances in the wake | 1:51:13 | 1:51:16
of these revelations. | 1:51:16 | 1:51:16
In times of tragedy,
it is the role of the monarch | 1:51:16 | 1:51:19
to help console and unite
the nation and sadly, | 1:51:19 | 1:51:22
this year, the Queen and other
members of the Royal Family have | 1:51:22 | 1:51:25
been called upon to perform
this duty all too often. | 1:51:25 | 1:51:28
Starting here in Westminster
in March, when five | 1:51:28 | 1:51:30
people were killed. | 1:51:30 | 1:51:31
Two days after the terror attack,
Prince Charles met some of the staff | 1:51:31 | 1:51:34
at Kings College Hospital,
one of several places | 1:51:34 | 1:51:41
the injured were treated. | 1:51:41 | 1:51:42
Westminster Abbey and the Duke
and Duchess of Cambridge | 1:51:42 | 1:51:44
and Prince Harry joined members
of the emergency services | 1:51:44 | 1:51:56
and relatives of those
who were killed. | 1:51:56 | 1:51:58
The message from the service was one
of hope, but that proved | 1:51:58 | 1:52:01
to be short lived. | 1:52:01 | 1:52:02
In Manchester, just a few
weeks later, 22 people, | 1:52:02 | 1:52:04
including children, were killed
and many more injured as they left | 1:52:04 | 1:52:07
a concert by the pop
singer Ariana Grande. | 1:52:07 | 1:52:30
You had enjoyed the concert? | 1:52:30 | 1:52:31
It was really good. | 1:52:31 | 1:52:32
I got to meet her
before the concert. | 1:52:32 | 1:52:35
Did you? | 1:52:35 | 1:52:35
She won a competition
with her friend to meet backstage. | 1:52:35 | 1:52:48
The Queen met some of those
recovering in the city's Children's | 1:52:48 | 1:52:51
Hospital. | 1:52:51 | 1:52:51
Very interesting how
everybody has united here? | 1:52:51 | 1:52:53
It has been amazing. | 1:52:53 | 1:53:01
Really amazing. | 1:53:01 | 1:53:02
Good. | 1:53:02 | 1:53:02 | |
No one should have to suffer
the losses you have endured yet know | 1:53:02 | 1:53:06
one could have ensured them
with greater fortitude. | 1:53:06 | 1:53:08
Even amid the unimaginable
horror of that attack, | 1:53:08 | 1:53:10
with the killing of innocent
children, we saw outstanding | 1:53:10 | 1:53:12
examples of the incredible courage. | 1:53:12 | 1:53:27
Early June and now and
all-too-familiar scenes. | 1:53:27 | 1:53:29
Prince Charles accompanied
by the Duchess of Cornwall visited | 1:53:29 | 1:53:31
the Royal London Hospital
in the aftermath of the London | 1:53:31 | 1:53:39
Bridge attack. | 1:53:39 | 1:53:40
Later that month, a community
devastated, this time by fire. | 1:53:40 | 1:53:42
We were evacuated. | 1:53:42 | 1:53:43
The flames were just unbelievable. | 1:53:43 | 1:53:57
You have done a brilliant job
in unprecedented circumstances... | 1:53:57 | 1:53:59
Two days after the Grenfell Tower
burned, the Queen and Prince William | 1:53:59 | 1:54:03
listen to some of those
who tried to help. | 1:54:03 | 1:54:05
Six months later, watched by members
of the Royal Family, | 1:54:05 | 1:54:08
school children who lived
near the tower scattered green | 1:54:08 | 1:54:10
hearts in memory of those who died. | 1:54:10 | 1:54:12
This was a National Service
of Remembrance, community and hope | 1:54:12 | 1:54:16
that a tragedy such as this
would never be repeated. | 1:54:16 | 1:54:19
Princes William and Harry were just
15 and 12 when their mother, | 1:54:19 | 1:54:22
Diana, Princess of Wales, died. | 1:54:22 | 1:54:32
By their own admission,
in the years since they had spoken | 1:54:32 | 1:54:35
very little about the impact on them
off death but this year, | 1:54:35 | 1:54:38
20 years on, they decided to open up
about their own trauma | 1:54:38 | 1:54:42
and their hope was they could start
a national conversation around | 1:54:42 | 1:54:45
the issue of mental health. | 1:54:45 | 1:55:01
This was the year William,
Catherine and Harry showed how | 1:55:01 | 1:55:04
persuasive a campaign force can be. | 1:55:04 | 1:55:05
The initiative Heads Together
was picked as a London Marathon's | 1:55:05 | 1:55:08
the charity. | 1:55:08 | 1:55:13
That high-profile event enabled them
to highlight mental health | 1:55:13 | 1:55:16
and the stigma which
can surround it. | 1:55:16 | 1:55:19
It was the common thread,
mental health, it seemed to run | 1:55:19 | 1:55:22
between military with your self
and addiction with me | 1:55:22 | 1:55:24
and bereavement, there
was the underlying threat | 1:55:24 | 1:55:26
of mental health. | 1:55:26 | 1:55:32
The pressures on children these days
are more than for us, | 1:55:32 | 1:55:35
you have so many things to worry
about, whether it is struggling | 1:55:35 | 1:55:38
with exams or home life or friends
and then the social media angle. | 1:55:38 | 1:55:42
You can understand why that,
coupled with staring at the screen | 1:55:42 | 1:55:45
the whole time, that a lot of issues
will build from that. | 1:55:45 | 1:55:54
It is always sold as if everybody
else's life is perfect | 1:55:54 | 1:55:57
and you think, there must be
something wrong with me. | 1:55:57 | 1:56:04
If you can have a family environment
where you can talk openly | 1:56:04 | 1:56:07
about your issues, that means
working better at your job, | 1:56:07 | 1:56:10
doing better at school,
it goes on and on. | 1:56:10 | 1:56:12
It was a very personal
campaign for the Princes, | 1:56:12 | 1:56:15
they took part in a BBC documentary
following a group of people | 1:56:15 | 1:56:18
with mental health issues
as they trained for the marathon. | 1:56:18 | 1:56:31
The shock is the biggest
thing and 20 years later, | 1:56:31 | 1:56:33
I still have shock within me
about my mother, shock cannot last | 1:56:33 | 1:56:37
that long, people
think, but it does. | 1:56:37 | 1:56:39
You never get over it,
such a non-believer be big moment | 1:56:39 | 1:56:42
in your life and it never leaves
you, you just learn to deal with it. | 1:56:42 | 1:56:46
It can have been no coincidence that
William and Harry chose this year | 1:56:46 | 1:56:49
to open up about their mother. | 1:56:49 | 1:56:51
In August, just as had
been the case in 1997, | 1:56:51 | 1:56:54
the gates guarding Kensington Palace
were strewn with flowers and other | 1:56:54 | 1:56:57
tributes to Diana,
Princess of Wales. | 1:56:57 | 1:56:58
A reminder that memory lives
on in the public consciousness. | 1:56:58 | 1:57:01
Looking at them, it was impossible
not to think back to the young | 1:57:01 | 1:57:04
princes in the days
following Diana's death in a car | 1:57:04 | 1:57:07
accident in Paris. | 1:57:07 | 1:57:08
20 years on, Harry spoke
of the shock they both thought. | 1:57:08 | 1:57:11
As part of their mental health
campaign, William and Catherine | 1:57:11 | 1:57:14
appeared on radio one. | 1:57:14 | 1:57:26
It is Friday the 21st of April,
it is 4pm and this is very Official | 1:57:26 | 1:57:30
Chart. | 1:57:30 | 1:57:30
Between now and 5:45pm we will bring
you the big stories, | 1:57:30 | 1:57:33
new entries and high climbers
and the top ten in full! | 1:57:33 | 1:57:36
In a very informal interview
with DJ Scott Mills, | 1:57:36 | 1:57:39
they painted a picture of life
behind the palace walls. | 1:57:39 | 1:57:41
Are you allowed to order
a takeaway if you want to? | 1:57:41 | 1:57:45
Absolutely! | 1:57:45 | 1:57:45
Definitely. | 1:57:45 | 1:57:48
Pizza, Chinese? | 1:57:48 | 1:57:49
Curry! | 1:57:49 | 1:57:50
We are finding it so much! | 1:57:50 | 1:57:51
What do you watch on
television, if anything? | 1:57:51 | 1:57:53
The Crown? | 1:57:53 | 1:57:54
Do you think, it's
not like that at all! | 1:57:54 | 1:57:56
People have asked me about that,
we are big on box sets, | 1:57:56 | 1:58:00
once we get time in the evening. | 1:58:00 | 1:58:02
Once the kiddies are in bed. | 1:58:02 | 1:58:03
You have to watch all those
children's programmes as well? | 1:58:03 | 1:58:06
Yes, lots of children's programmes! | 1:58:06 | 1:58:08
Some of them are really good
but you have to pretend you're | 1:58:08 | 1:58:11
interested because George gets very
upset if you're not showing due | 1:58:11 | 1:58:14
diligence to the characters. | 1:58:14 | 1:58:25
Starting in September,
Prince George would have had less | 1:58:25 | 1:58:27
time to watch television
as he started school. | 1:58:27 | 1:58:30
He had to undertake this rite
of passage with only daddy | 1:58:30 | 1:58:33
for company as his mother
was suffering from severe morning | 1:58:33 | 1:58:35
sickness. | 1:58:35 | 1:58:36
He is now a reception pupil
at Thomas' Battersea, | 1:58:36 | 1:58:38
a mixed fee-paying
school in South London. | 1:58:38 | 1:58:40
His classmates know him simply
as George Cambridge. | 1:58:40 | 1:58:42
Looking ahead to 2018,
the Royal Family is set to look | 1:58:42 | 1:58:45
a little different. | 1:58:45 | 1:59:04
There will be a new sibling for
Prince George and Princess Charlotte | 1:59:04 | 1:59:08
and also joining their ranks,
a Californian born actress | 1:59:08 | 1:59:10
and soon-to-be wife of Prince Harry. | 1:59:10 | 1:59:15
Good morning, happy New Year, this
is Breakfast with Roger Johnson. | 2:00:20 | 2:00:24
Huge crowds gather all over
the world to celebrate | 2:00:24 | 2:00:26
the start of 2018. | 2:00:26 | 2:00:27
Spectacular fireworks,
performances and the sound | 2:00:27 | 2:00:28
of Big Ben brought in the New Year -
despite warnings about bad weather | 2:00:28 | 2:00:32
and travel problems. | 2:00:32 | 2:00:35
Good morning, it's
Monday 1st January. | 2:00:43 | 2:00:45
Elsewhere in the news
this morning... | 2:00:45 | 2:00:48
Five British people,
including an 11-year-old girl, | 2:00:48 | 2:00:51
are confirmed to have been killed
when a seaplane crashed | 2:00:51 | 2:00:53
in Australia yesterday. | 2:00:53 | 2:01:00
Fire-fighters have been battling
a blaze in a multi-storey car park | 2:01:00 | 2:01:03
in Liverpool which has destroyed up
to 1400 vehicles. | 2:01:03 | 2:01:06
North Korea's leader
says his country's nuclear | 2:01:06 | 2:01:08
weapons are a "reality,
not a threat", and the entire US | 2:01:08 | 2:01:10
mainland is a target. | 2:01:10 | 2:01:15
In sport, the winning run is over -
and it takes an injury-time penalty | 2:01:15 | 2:01:18
save to preserve Manchester City's
unbeaten record this | 2:01:18 | 2:01:20
season, as they're given
a scare at the Palace. | 2:01:20 | 2:01:28
Happy New Year from BBC Breakfast!
Good morning from Parliament Square, | 2:01:28 | 2:01:34
final preparations underway for this
year's New Year's Day Parade, half a | 2:01:34 | 2:01:38
million people expected on the
streets of London and 8000 | 2:01:38 | 2:01:42
performers, including these guys
Texas. | 2:01:42 | 2:01:47
They will cheer in the New Year for
us. | 2:01:47 | 2:01:49 | |
And Stav has the weather. | 2:01:49 | 2:01:52
Happy New Year, today we start with
a lot of showers, wet and windy | 2:01:52 | 2:01:56
weather in places, we could see some
sunshine into the afternoon at the | 2:01:56 | 2:02:00
start of 28 team is looking
unsettled for the rest of the week. | 2:02:00 | 2:02:03
I will have more in about 15
minutes. | 2:02:03 | 2:02:09
First, our main story. | 2:02:09 | 2:02:11
Millions of people around
the world have been | 2:02:11 | 2:02:13
celebrating the start of 2018. | 2:02:13 | 2:02:15
More than 100,000 ticketholders
watched London's midnight | 2:02:15 | 2:02:16
firework show from the banks
of the River Thames, | 2:02:16 | 2:02:18
and Hogmanay celebrations went ahead
in Edinburgh despite earlier travel | 2:02:18 | 2:02:21
and weather concerns,
as Simon Clemison reports. | 2:02:21 | 2:02:27
It was one party Big Ben
really couldn't miss. | 2:02:27 | 2:02:29
BONG! | 2:02:29 | 2:02:31 | |
Chiming for new year,
despite being silenced at the moment | 2:02:31 | 2:02:33
while repairs are carried out. | 2:02:33 | 2:02:35
Cue 12,000 fireworks. | 2:02:35 | 2:02:45
Whatever you did to finish 2017,
whatever you are doing to start | 2:02:46 | 2:02:52
2018, there are these 11 minutes
and 15 seconds in the middle | 2:02:52 | 2:02:55
here in London when you look up
and forget to breathe. | 2:02:55 | 2:03:02
The soundtrack dominated
by female artists. | 2:03:02 | 2:03:09
The centenary of women
beginning to get the vote - | 2:03:09 | 2:03:11
one way this year will be defined. | 2:03:11 | 2:03:15
Any thoughts about what 2018
might hold for you? | 2:03:15 | 2:03:21
Yeah, it's going to be
the best year ever! | 2:03:21 | 2:03:23
Why is that? | 2:03:23 | 2:03:25
Just A levels, we're
going to get our careers. | 2:03:25 | 2:03:29
We're going get into university! | 2:03:29 | 2:03:30
To university! | 2:03:30 | 2:03:33
Going to be good. | 2:03:33 | 2:03:35
Do you want to get my kilt? | 2:03:35 | 2:03:36
Yeah! | 2:03:36 | 2:03:38 | |
In Scotland, Storm Dylan had been
an unwelcome party guest | 2:03:38 | 2:03:42
during the day but, given
the importance of Hogmanay, | 2:03:42 | 2:03:44
it would take a lot to spoil
the evening celebrations, | 2:03:44 | 2:03:46
even though winds of more than 70
miles an hour had hit some parts. | 2:03:46 | 2:03:50
In Sydney, another quiet
night, the Harbour Bridge | 2:03:50 | 2:03:51
somewhere in this picture. | 2:03:51 | 2:03:53
Rainbow colours, a tribute
to Australia's legalisation | 2:03:53 | 2:03:55
of same-sex marriage in 2017. | 2:03:55 | 2:04:01
As city after city around the world
rang in the new year, | 2:04:01 | 2:04:05
Hong Kong erupted, Athens glowed,
and Moscow sparkled. | 2:04:05 | 2:04:10
There are still some
countries to go. | 2:04:10 | 2:04:14
Now New York has marked the moment,
the last inhabited island, | 2:04:14 | 2:04:17
American Samoa, will celebrate 25
hours after neighbouring islands | 2:04:17 | 2:04:20
first began the party. | 2:04:20 | 2:04:26
The five British citizens who died
when a seaplane crashed in Australia | 2:04:26 | 2:04:29
on New Year's Eve have been named. | 2:04:29 | 2:04:31
The Australian pilot also died
after crashing into a river 30 | 2:04:31 | 2:04:34
miles north of Sydney. | 2:04:34 | 2:04:37
Our correspondent Phil Mercer is
near the scene in New South Wales. | 2:04:37 | 2:04:44
Happy New Year to you, but in many
ways one that begins with tragedy | 2:04:44 | 2:04:47
there?
That is right, we know that there | 2:04:47 | 2:04:53
were five British tourists on board
this the plane that crashed just to | 2:04:53 | 2:04:57
the north of where we are on the
Hawkesbury River near Jerusalem Bay. | 2:04:57 | 2:05:00
That is close to the town of Taliban
and the picketing is Richard | 2:05:00 | 2:05:11
Cousins, successful British
businessman, who died alongside his | 2:05:11 | 2:05:14
two sons. Also among the dead, Mr
Cousins' fiancee Emma bowed and who | 2:05:14 | 2:05:20
died alongside her 11-year-old
daughter. Investigations are | 2:05:20 | 2:05:25
continuing and air crash
investigation teams say their work | 2:05:25 | 2:05:28
may take many months to finally
decide how and why a sightseeing | 2:05:28 | 2:05:34
flight, a routine flight, ended in
such tragedy. We have also been | 2:05:34 | 2:05:38
hearing from eyewitnesses, one man
who was on a houseboat nearby, about | 2:05:38 | 2:05:43
50 metres away, said he dived in
when the played crash -- when the | 2:05:43 | 2:05:46
plane crashed and try to open the
door but he said the plane sank way | 2:05:46 | 2:05:50
too for him to retrieve anyone
inside but it is those eyewitness | 2:05:50 | 2:05:54
accounts that form a crucial part of
this air crash investigation. | 2:05:54 | 2:06:00
Thank you very much. | 2:06:00 | 2:06:04
Scores of people who travelled
to Liverpool to celebrate | 2:06:04 | 2:06:07
the New Year have had to spend
the night in a temporary shelter | 2:06:07 | 2:06:11
after a fire in a multi-storey car
park next to the city's Echo Arena | 2:06:11 | 2:06:14
destroyed more than 1,000 vehicles. | 2:06:14 | 2:06:16
Steve Saul reports. | 2:06:16 | 2:06:18
The fire is thought to have started
in one vehicle on the third | 2:06:18 | 2:06:22
floor of the car park. | 2:06:22 | 2:06:23
Emergency services arrived
within minutes, but the flames | 2:06:23 | 2:06:25
quickly spread to other floors. | 2:06:25 | 2:06:27
Police say 1,400 cars
have been destroyed. | 2:06:27 | 2:06:31
Up to 4,000 people are thought to
have been left stranded in the city. | 2:06:31 | 2:06:34
The arena, on the city's
waterfront, was hosting | 2:06:34 | 2:06:36
the Liverpool International Horse
Show. | 2:06:36 | 2:06:37 | |
No spectators or animals
have been injured. | 2:06:37 | 2:06:41
My car. | 2:06:41 | 2:06:45
All our belongings in it. | 2:06:45 | 2:06:46
Everything. | 2:06:46 | 2:06:48
I came over from Northern Ireland,
and all my stuff - like, | 2:06:48 | 2:06:51
my suitcase and all my clothes
are in it, all gone. | 2:06:51 | 2:06:54
Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service
say this is one of the biggest fires | 2:06:54 | 2:07:04
they have ever dealt with,
with crews working under very | 2:07:11 | 2:07:14
challenging conditions
from the outside of the building | 2:07:14 | 2:07:16
because of a real fear
of structural collapse. | 2:07:16 | 2:07:18
The difficulty that we have
is because this is so deep-seated, | 2:07:18 | 2:07:20
is to physically be able to get
into, right into the middle | 2:07:20 | 2:07:23
of the building to put the fire out,
which clearly is the extent | 2:07:23 | 2:07:26
of which the fire has taken hold
there, we will not be able to do | 2:07:26 | 2:07:30
that for quite some time,
given the structural stability | 2:07:30 | 2:07:32
issues with the building as well. | 2:07:32 | 2:07:33
Liverpool City Council are expected
to help make arrangements to get | 2:07:33 | 2:07:36
those who have been left in the city
back home later. | 2:07:36 | 2:07:39
Temporary parking arrangements have
been made so the arena | 2:07:39 | 2:07:41
can operate as normal. | 2:07:41 | 2:07:48
The North Korean leader has said he
had in nuclear button on his desk in | 2:07:48 | 2:07:52
a defiant New Year message. Kim
Jong-un said the United States would | 2:07:52 | 2:07:58
never be able to start a war with
North Korea. Our correspondent | 2:07:58 | 2:08:01
Sophie Long is in the South Korean
capital Seoul this morning. New | 2:08:01 | 2:08:06
Year, same rhetoric, is this another
threat aimed at the US? | 2:08:06 | 2:08:11
Well, yes, he did have a clear and
unsurprising message for the United | 2:08:11 | 2:08:15
States, he called 2017 the year of
accomplishment and said that he had | 2:08:15 | 2:08:21
the nuclear arsenal capable of
striking anywhere on the US mainland | 2:08:21 | 2:08:25
and a button to push on his desk.
Does he have the capability that he | 2:08:25 | 2:08:29
boasts about? Maybe not, but he can
adapt the sixth nuclear test in | 2:08:29 | 2:08:34
September and test of an
intercontinental ballistic missile | 2:08:34 | 2:08:37
that he says could reach the United
States in November. He had a more | 2:08:37 | 2:08:43
conciliatory tone to South Korea, he
said he was open to dialogue and was | 2:08:43 | 2:08:46
thinking about sending a delegation
to the Winter Olympics which are due | 2:08:46 | 2:08:52
to take place in South Korea in
February. That will be welcomed by | 2:08:52 | 2:08:55
the president here, who has offered
in the past two postponed a joint | 2:08:55 | 2:09:00
military exercises with South Korea
forces and US forces that Kim | 2:09:00 | 2:09:06
Jong-un sees as provocation, which
could be a good thing for people | 2:09:06 | 2:09:09
living on the Korean peninsular. It
would at least cause some breathing | 2:09:09 | 2:09:13
time when they could relax and hope
for some peace and stability and | 2:09:13 | 2:09:18
de-escalation of the tensions that
have been rising and rising | 2:09:18 | 2:09:22
throughout 2017. So a multilayered
measured, very defiant to the United | 2:09:22 | 2:09:28
States but more conciliatory to its
neighbour, South Korea. | 2:09:28 | 2:09:31
Sophie, thank you very much. | 2:09:31 | 2:09:36
The President of Iran
has appealed for calm, | 2:09:36 | 2:09:38
saying people would have the right
to protest, but not to commit acts | 2:09:38 | 2:09:41
of violence, amid continuing
anti-government protests. | 2:09:41 | 2:09:42
In his first public comments
since demonstrations | 2:09:42 | 2:09:48
against the government began
on Thursday, Hassan Rouhani warned | 2:09:48 | 2:09:50
that violence and public disorder
would not be tolerated. | 2:09:50 | 2:09:56
TRANSLATION: The atmosphere
for criticism, protest | 2:09:56 | 2:10:01
within a legal framework,
is absolutely free, but | 2:10:01 | 2:10:04
the atmosphere for destruction
and unrest is definitely not | 2:10:04 | 2:10:06
an atmosphere which
people would tolerate. | 2:10:06 | 2:10:10
The outgoing chairman of the Police
Federation claims that members of | 2:10:10 | 2:10:14
the Freemasons are blocking reforms
in policing. Steve White, whose | 2:10:14 | 2:10:18
organisation represents
rank-and-file officers in England | 2:10:18 | 2:10:21
and Wales, made the comment in an
interview with the Guardian | 2:10:21 | 2:10:24
newspaper. The claim was rejected by
senior police officers and the | 2:10:24 | 2:10:28

The Archbishop of Canterbury has
paid tribute to emergency workers | 2:10:32 | 2:10:35
in his New Year's day message. | 2:10:35 | 2:10:36
Justin Welby reflected
on the challenges faced | 2:10:36 | 2:10:38
by the emergency services,
including the terror | 2:10:38 | 2:10:40
attacks in Manchester,
Westminster and London Bridge. | 2:10:40 | 2:10:44
He said 2018 could be defined
either by human suffering | 2:10:44 | 2:10:47
or the compassionate response to it. | 2:10:47 | 2:10:57

Those are the main stories, good
morning if you have just joined us, | 2:11:20 | 2:11:24
surfacing after New Year's Eve
celebrations, very happy New Year to | 2:11:24 | 2:11:27
you. | 2:11:27 | 2:11:29 | |
The start of the New Year has
many of us reflecting on the past 12 | 2:11:29 | 2:11:32
months and what we want to do
differently in the year ahead. | 2:11:32 | 2:11:35
But why do we set ourselves
resolutions, and how can we make | 2:11:35 | 2:11:38
sure we stick to them? | 2:11:38 | 2:11:48
We have been finding out what you
think. | 2:11:54 | 2:11:57
Try and be a little bit healthier. | 2:11:57 | 2:11:58
Umm, but not a lot different. | 2:11:58 | 2:12:00
Try to enjoy ourselves. | 2:12:00 | 2:12:01
To finish my Masters
and get some work. | 2:12:01 | 2:12:03
To help more people
out if they are hurt | 2:12:03 | 2:12:05
or anything is wrong. | 2:12:05 | 2:12:07
Eat less unhealthy food. | 2:12:07 | 2:12:08
Go on a diet. | 2:12:08 | 2:12:12
You don't have to go on a diet! | 2:12:12 | 2:12:15
But I don't really want to. | 2:12:15 | 2:12:24
Resolutions shouldn't
be done on 1st Jan, | 2:12:24 | 2:12:26
they should be ongoing
throughout the year. | 2:12:26 | 2:12:27
Keep maintaining them on to them
for the right reasons. | 2:12:27 | 2:12:30
I never stick to them. | 2:12:30 | 2:12:31
Exactly, yeah. | 2:12:31 | 2:12:32
They are affecting. | 2:12:32 | 2:12:33
Still, life goes on. | 2:12:33 | 2:12:34
Why, because it is
a new year, do you... | 2:12:34 | 2:12:44
It is a great idea,
but if you don't stick to them, | 2:12:45 | 2:12:55
you feel bad when,
so don't make them! | 2:12:58 | 2:13:00
I am going to be a better husband,
a better father, and, | 2:13:00 | 2:13:03
umm, a better person. | 2:13:03 | 2:13:04
I do a decent job already,
but there is always | 2:13:04 | 2:13:06
room for improvement. | 2:13:06 | 2:13:07
So why do we set
ourselves resolutions? | 2:13:07 | 2:13:09
The Psychotherapist Emma Kenny
is here along with Dave, | 2:13:09 | 2:13:11
who has big plans for 2018. | 2:13:11 | 2:13:13
He has survived cancer five times,
he now hopes to inspire others | 2:13:13 | 2:13:16
and he's here with his son,
Lee, and wife Angela. | 2:13:16 | 2:13:18
You have a shirt that says, I have
had cancer five times, but I believe | 2:13:18 | 2:13:24
you have got it again, is that
right? Yes, a little mark on my | 2:13:24 | 2:13:30
neck, I need that removing on
Thursday. Is that six times? No, it | 2:13:30 | 2:13:35
has cost me a lot of money to have
this printed! When I had skin cancer | 2:13:35 | 2:13:40
a few years ago on my cheek, it was
just a little operation like having | 2:13:40 | 2:13:46
a cyst removed, so if I have this
one, this is the other half, so I am | 2:13:46 | 2:13:51
still only five times. It might
sound like we are being flippant, | 2:13:51 | 2:13:55
which I don't mean to be, but it is
because we were chatting while that | 2:13:55 | 2:13:58
report was on. Your positivity is
astonishing, is it in place of a New | 2:13:58 | 2:14:04
Year 's resolution? I bet you don't
make them? No, you have to be | 2:14:04 | 2:14:08
positive all the time, you only live
once, enjoy it, enjoy your life, | 2:14:08 | 2:14:12
inspire people if you can. What do
you think of your dad? He is | 2:14:12 | 2:14:18
incredible, he inspires a lot of
people and it is amazing he has | 2:14:18 | 2:14:22
survived cancer five times. He gives
people hope, doesn't he? Other | 2:14:22 | 2:14:26
people suffering, it gives them the
hope that life does go on and you | 2:14:26 | 2:14:29
can overcome these things. When you
see that, Emma, do you not look at | 2:14:29 | 2:14:34
it and think, if you have got the
positivity that Dave embodies, do | 2:14:34 | 2:14:39
you need resolutions? Do you need to
set targets? To some degree he lives | 2:14:39 | 2:14:44
his resolution every day, positive
mindset, pushing yourself further | 2:14:44 | 2:14:47
and harder, so to some degree
because of the optimism and | 2:14:47 | 2:14:51
positivity, that has a huge impact
on healing, I think, so living in | 2:14:51 | 2:14:55
that manner and with the exercise is
just a complete collaboration of | 2:14:55 | 2:14:59
success. But as far as the average
person goes... Mere mortals like the | 2:14:59 | 2:15:03
rest of us! Exactly! Goal-setting is
important, so using smart targets | 2:15:03 | 2:15:10
means you are specific about what
you want to achieve, you know why | 2:15:10 | 2:15:13
you will achieve it and implement a
plan of how you will do that. | 2:15:13 | 2:15:17
Explain that | 2:15:17 | 2:15:21
SMART? Smart, measurable,
achievable, realistic, don't say you | 2:15:30 | 2:15:37
will win the lottery because it
might not happen, and time bound, so | 2:15:37 | 2:15:40
when you will achieve them. I am
sure you are constantly planning | 2:15:40 | 2:15:44
another marathon... It is the
Ironman? If Angie lets me do an | 2:15:44 | 2:15:50
Ironman, I will try to do one, but
it depends. You will let him? I will | 2:15:50 | 2:15:55
let him! For some people the idea of
exercise, we all get to the position | 2:15:55 | 2:16:02
now, we have had too much to eat and
drink over Christmas, my suit is a | 2:16:02 | 2:16:06
bit tighter than it was and you
think, I need to lose a bit of | 2:16:06 | 2:16:09
weight, but exercise is a big
turn-off for lots of people but you | 2:16:09 | 2:16:13
started doing it bit by bit? Yes, I
built it up. I remember ten years | 2:16:13 | 2:16:18
ago now, my goal for the year was to
run a half marathon, people claim | 2:16:18 | 2:16:22
for that, -- people train for that,
it was my 40th birthday and I | 2:16:22 | 2:16:31
decided, it was only five weeks
before that me and my brother | 2:16:31 | 2:16:35
decided to run 40 miles on my 40th
birthday, run round all the old | 2:16:35 | 2:16:40
schools and houses that I lived in
India every, got all the schools | 2:16:40 | 2:16:45
involved and raised £5,000. Where
are you from? Hull. A great year in | 2:16:45 | 2:16:52
Hull all-round. Have you had a
resolution, give up chocolate or any | 2:16:52 | 2:16:57
of the usual things? It would be
good giving up chocolate but... But | 2:16:57 | 2:17:04
you don't need to! I don't know when
it comes to New Year 's resolutions, | 2:17:04 | 2:17:09
I guess you just make them anyway.
It is good to set yourself targets | 2:17:09 | 2:17:14
but also good to doing targets
anyway every day. And I suppose, | 2:17:14 | 2:17:19
being married to Dave, anything you
set yourself is comparatively small | 2:17:19 | 2:17:24
fry! It is never going to match what
Dave sets, ever! I think it is just | 2:17:24 | 2:17:30
being healthy, happy, living life to
the full. One of the brilliant | 2:17:30 | 2:17:34
things that you did, and anybody who
wants to think about that in | 2:17:34 | 2:17:38
resolutions, don't overwhelm
yourself with the big picture. As | 2:17:38 | 2:17:41
you said, it was about starting,
going for a small bug and | 2:17:41 | 2:17:44
acknowledging that is how you build,
then look, 40 miles, I will just do | 2:17:44 | 2:17:49
that because it is my 40th birthday!
We have all done that! For those of | 2:17:49 | 2:17:55
us getting closer to bigger birthday
is the idea of running that far is | 2:17:55 | 2:18:00
altogether not possible! It is
lovely to see you, Dave, thank you | 2:18:00 | 2:18:04
for coming in, we wish you the best
for 2018, anti-EU, Lee, Angela, and | 2:18:04 | 2:18:09
Emma. I hope that has inspired you
to do whatever resolution takes your | 2:18:09 | 2:18:14
fancy, perhaps we will wish for good
weather to start 2018, Stav has | 2:18:14 | 2:18:18
focused, happy Year. Is | 2:18:18 | 2:18:21
Here's Stav with a look
at this morning's weather. | 2:18:21 | 2:18:22
Lots of low pressure systems. That's
how it is going to be for New Year's | 2:18:29 | 2:18:34
Day. We have two areas of low
pressure. This one is going to | 2:18:34 | 2:18:38
batter parts of France and bring
heavy rain and strong winds through | 2:18:38 | 2:18:42
the English Channel and southern
counties of England as well. The | 2:18:42 | 2:18:45
extent of the rain will be around
the M4 corridor. We have a cluster | 2:18:45 | 2:18:53
of heavy showers. They are going to
move inland. Elsewhere a lot of | 2:18:53 | 2:18:58
sunshine to start New Year's Day.
For Northern Ireland, into parts of | 2:18:58 | 2:19:03
Scotland, very windy here. Plenty of
blustery showers and gales for | 2:19:03 | 2:19:06
Northern Ireland and there will be
snow falling over the higher ground | 2:19:06 | 2:19:09
of Scotland. This wet and windy
weather pushing on in towards | 2:19:09 | 2:19:12
northern England and North Wales.
Conditions improve across the south, | 2:19:12 | 2:19:16
that area of low pressure moves away
and we should see sunshine moving in | 2:19:16 | 2:19:19
its place. A chillier day than what
we have seen the last few days. The | 2:19:19 | 2:19:23
area of low pressure clears away.
Then we are in a brief ridge of high | 2:19:23 | 2:19:27
pressure. It means overnight things
will turn colder and under clear | 2:19:27 | 2:19:33
skies and with lighter winds.
Temperatures coming up across the | 2:19:33 | 2:19:37
west, that's because we've got the
next weather system moving in and it | 2:19:37 | 2:19:40
will bring a belt of wet and windy
weather. Snow falling over the | 2:19:40 | 2:19:47
higher ground, northern England and
in towards Scotland, but the rain | 2:19:47 | 2:19:50
will clear and it will leave
blustery showers and turning milder | 2:19:50 | 2:19:53
across the south. We are concerned
about this next area of low pressure | 2:19:53 | 2:19:57
which could bring a spell of gales
or severe gales to parts of the UK. | 2:19:57 | 2:20:01
Keep tuned to the weather forecast
for that, but we think it should | 2:20:01 | 2:20:05
clear off into the North Sea for
Wednesday leaving a rash of blustery | 2:20:05 | 2:20:08
showers throughout the day. Some
sunshine in between, but heavy | 2:20:08 | 2:20:12
showers across the west where it
will be windy with gale force winds. | 2:20:12 | 2:20:15
You get the picture. It will be very
unsettled for the rest of the week | 2:20:15 | 2:20:19
ahead. Further areas of low pressure
bringing heavy rain and gales, but | 2:20:19 | 2:20:23
there will be sunshine in the
forecast as well. Back to you, | 2:20:23 | 2:20:26
Roger. Stav, thank you very much
indeed. | 2:20:26 | 2:20:30
Around 500,0000 people are expected
to turn out in Central London | 2:20:32 | 2:20:37
for the annual New Year's Day Parade
today with thousands of performers | 2:20:37 | 2:20:40
set to entertain the crowds. | 2:20:40 | 2:20:41
Graham Satchell is getting
a taste of the action | 2:20:41 | 2:20:43
for us this morning. | 2:20:43 | 2:20:47
Graham, they are still going through
the motions and happy New Year to | 2:20:47 | 2:20:51
you all.
Good morning, Roger. Happy New Year | 2:20:51 | 2:20:55
to you. We're in Parliament Square.
These cheerleaders have come all the | 2:20:55 | 2:21:03
way from the southern state of
America, mainly from Texas. Good | 2:21:03 | 2:21:09
morning t Chloe. Good morning. So
you have done this once before, is | 2:21:09 | 2:21:12
that right? Yes, I did this trip
last year too. What was it like? | 2:21:12 | 2:21:16
What's the day like? It was awesome.
It was an amazing trip. Good luck | 2:21:16 | 2:21:20
today. Happy New Year to you. Thank
you. Happy New Year. We also have | 2:21:20 | 2:21:26
marching bands. Look at these guys.
Off you go. | 2:21:26 | 2:21:33
They are from California. An 80
piece marching band. | 2:21:33 | 2:21:39
They are feeling like they want to
Celebrate this morning at this | 2:21:39 | 2:21:44
ungodly hour! While you watch the
band I'm going to have a chat with | 2:21:44 | 2:21:50
Colin and Fiona. Coldge, good
morning to you. Good morning. Tell | 2:21:50 | 2:21:53
me why you're here today? Happy New
Year to everybody. We're here to | 2:21:53 | 2:21:58
play with the UFO Silver Band. We're
here to celebrate. You have been | 2:21:58 | 2:22:06
working with schoolchildren in and
around Grenfell Tower, is that | 2:22:06 | 2:22:10
right? Our truck, we're playing on a
45-foot articulated lorry and our | 2:22:10 | 2:22:17
truck is decorated in artwork that's
created by children from around | 2:22:17 | 2:22:22
Grenfell and it is about the
positives of community. That artwork | 2:22:22 | 2:22:26
has helped them, do you think? Well,
they're giving with such generosity | 2:22:26 | 2:22:31
a really positive message to the
public, to the world. Colin, you've | 2:22:31 | 2:22:36
done this many times. What's the day
like? Well, this is a real | 2:22:36 | 2:22:41
celebration, but it starts, but get
lined up by Green Park at 10.30am. | 2:22:41 | 2:22:47
We play, we play, we play and we
carry on to 2pm. And it is a | 2:22:47 | 2:22:53
fantastic way to start the New Year.
I'm going to have a chat with the | 2:22:53 | 2:22:57
conductor, Justin. Good morning,
Justin. Tell me about your band. We | 2:22:57 | 2:23:10
are from Southern California. Have
you been to Britain or Europe | 2:23:10 | 2:23:13
before? No. What do you think of
London? It is great coming to London | 2:23:13 | 2:23:18
and seeing it. It is different. It
will be quite a day today. Are you | 2:23:18 | 2:23:22
looking forward to it? Oh yes, for
sure. Happy New Year. Thank you. | 2:23:22 | 2:23:28
Quite a scene here and we are
celebrating, not just with marching | 2:23:28 | 2:23:33
bands, and cheerleaders, but all
sorts of funny animals who seem to | 2:23:33 | 2:23:37
be here. So, happy New Year from him
and it's happy New Year from me! | 2:23:37 | 2:23:42
Happy New Year. Graham, thank you
very much indeed. Pass on our thanks | 2:23:42 | 2:23:48
to your guests including the
gorilla! They have been up bright | 2:23:48 | 2:23:52
and early since before 6am. The
celebrations get under way in London | 2:23:52 | 2:23:57
later on. | 2:23:57 | 2:24:01
Not much to celebrate for Manchester
City. It won't affect the league | 2:24:01 | 2:24:05
table. Their winning run is at an
end. Happy New Year, Mike, by the | 2:24:05 | 2:24:10
way. I have seen you a couple of
times already. It seemed hours ago | 2:24:10 | 2:24:15
when you first said happy New Year.
They were lose to losing at Crystal | 2:24:15 | 2:24:21
Palace who a few weeks ago were
facing relegation worries. Roy has | 2:24:21 | 2:24:25
lifted them. There is talk about
whether Manchester City can go the | 2:24:25 | 2:24:31
whole season without losing. | 2:24:31 | 2:24:37
There was late penalty drama in both
of yesterday's Premier League games. | 2:24:37 | 2:24:40
Crystal Palace missed a late one
to snatch a win over leaders | 2:24:40 | 2:24:43
Manchester City as their 18 match
winning run, came to an end | 2:24:43 | 2:24:47
yesterday while West Brom salvaged
a point with a dubious penalty over | 2:24:47 | 2:24:50
Arsenal. | 2:24:50 | 2:24:51
Adam Wild rounds up the action. | 2:24:51 | 2:24:53
The message from fans
was clear enough. | 2:24:53 | 2:24:57
Still, it is rather hard to imagine
just how things could get any better | 2:24:57 | 2:25:01
for Manchester City. | 2:25:01 | 2:25:03
Never has a team been so far ahead
at the end of the year. | 2:25:03 | 2:25:06
To their potential, well,
there seems no end. | 2:25:06 | 2:25:09
But against Crystal Palace, this
was a new year lacking celebration. | 2:25:09 | 2:25:13
Gabriel Jesus, injured,
leaving in tears. | 2:25:13 | 2:25:15
It was his replacement,
Sergio Aguero, who went | 2:25:15 | 2:25:17
the closest in the first half. | 2:25:17 | 2:25:21
But this was not the brilliance from
City that all have come to fear. | 2:25:21 | 2:25:24
Victory would have equalled
the European record. | 2:25:24 | 2:25:26
The target, then, straightforward. | 2:25:26 | 2:25:28
Hitting it, seemingly less so. | 2:25:28 | 2:25:32
But Palace are a side
with aims of their own. | 2:25:32 | 2:25:35
They did have chances with
which they should have done better. | 2:25:35 | 2:25:38
Everyone seemed to know it. | 2:25:38 | 2:25:39
And that, ultimately, for them,
is how this will be remembered. | 2:25:39 | 2:25:42
In the 90th minute,
awarded a penalty. | 2:25:42 | 2:25:48
Luca, though, unable to see
the year out with a bang. | 2:25:48 | 2:25:53
So, not quite the perfect end
to 2017 for either side. | 2:25:53 | 2:25:55
For both, New Year's Eve,
as is so often the case, | 2:25:55 | 2:25:58
a bit of an anticlimax. | 2:25:58 | 2:26:02
Elsewhere, a big day on the calendar
of a rather different sort. | 2:26:02 | 2:26:05
At West Brom, Arsene Wenger took
charge of Arsenal for the 811th | 2:26:05 | 2:26:08
Premier League game,
a new record. | 2:26:08 | 2:26:11
But there was much work to be done
before any celebrations | 2:26:11 | 2:26:13
would be allowed to start. | 2:26:13 | 2:26:15
His team certainly made him wait. | 2:26:15 | 2:26:19
It wasn't until the second half
before they found a way through. | 2:26:19 | 2:26:22
And even then it took
a bit of fortune. | 2:26:22 | 2:26:27
Alexis Sanchez's free
kick, deflected. | 2:26:27 | 2:26:28
But that was still far
from the end of it. | 2:26:28 | 2:26:31
Two minutes remaining,
West Brom were offered | 2:26:31 | 2:26:32
a hand back into it. | 2:26:32 | 2:26:34
This, deemed a penalty. | 2:26:34 | 2:26:38
And Jay Rodriguez gladly spoiled
Wenger's special day. | 2:26:38 | 2:26:40
1-1. | 2:26:40 | 2:26:45 | |
A year laden with controversy
and drama to the very end. | 2:26:45 | 2:26:48
Exeter Chiefs start the new year ten
points clear at the top | 2:26:50 | 2:26:53
of the Rugby Union Premiership. | 2:26:53 | 2:26:55
They beat Leicester 30-6 with four
second half tries at Sandy Park. | 2:26:55 | 2:26:58
That's the Tigers sixth
league defeat in a row - | 2:26:58 | 2:27:01
their worst run in over 50 years. | 2:27:01 | 2:27:02
Alex Gulra-Jani reports. | 2:27:02 | 2:27:07
2017 will go down as
a great year in Exeter. | 2:27:07 | 2:27:11
Champions for the first time, Devon,
now a must-stop shop | 2:27:11 | 2:27:13
for the England head coach. | 2:27:13 | 2:27:14
And with the Chiefs clear
at the top of the table, | 2:27:14 | 2:27:17
2018 could be memorable as well. | 2:27:17 | 2:27:21
The only points early
against Leicester from the boot. | 2:27:21 | 2:27:23
The hands were making
far too many errors. | 2:27:23 | 2:27:25
Chances missed. | 2:27:25 | 2:27:35
And the visitors were keeping
in touch thanks to George Ford. | 2:27:35 | 2:27:37
It took root strength to put
the league leaders in charge. | 2:27:37 | 2:27:40
Don carried them over. | 2:27:40 | 2:27:41
And now, a gap emerged
between the sides. | 2:27:41 | 2:27:43
Exeter certainly needed no help,
yet Jonny May was in a giving mood. | 2:27:43 | 2:27:48
A parry straight into
the arms of Henry Slade. | 2:27:48 | 2:27:50
The simplest of finishes. | 2:27:50 | 2:27:51
And those supporters may well have
stayed on their feet, | 2:27:51 | 2:27:53
as Johnny Hill went over
not long after. | 2:27:53 | 2:27:55
And there was still time for more. | 2:27:55 | 2:27:57
A bonus point-winning try
with the last play of the game. | 2:27:57 | 2:28:02
Jack, with the perfect end
to a monumental year for Exeter. | 2:28:02 | 2:28:08
Scarlets won away at Cardiff Blues
14-11 in the Pro-14 Cardiff led | 2:28:10 | 2:28:16
at half time but Scarlets fought
back soon after the break. | 2:28:16 | 2:28:19
Rhys Patchell's try, their second
of the match, sealed the win. | 2:28:19 | 2:28:21
The victory leaves them
top of Conference B. | 2:28:21 | 2:28:23
In the other Pro-14 fixture,
Ospreys beat Dragons 22-9. | 2:28:23 | 2:28:32
British number one,
Yohanna Konta, has started her | 2:28:32 | 2:28:42
season with a two
sets to one victory over | 2:28:43 | 2:28:46
Madison Keys
at the Brisbane International. | 2:28:46 | 2:28:47
It's her first tournament
with new coach Michael Joyce. | 2:28:47 | 2:28:49
She lost the first set
to the American 6-4 but broke early | 2:28:49 | 2:28:52
in the second to take it 6-4
and level the match. | 2:28:52 | 2:28:55
Keys lost her serve at the start
of the third and Konta | 2:28:55 | 2:28:58
was untroubled by her opponent
as she strolled through the set 6-3 | 2:28:58 | 2:29:00
to win the first round contest. | 2:29:00 | 2:29:02
England's cricketers,
have arrived in Sydney | 2:29:02 | 2:29:03
ahead of the Final Ashes Test
which begins in three days' time. | 2:29:03 | 2:29:06
The England Head Coach
Trevor Bayliss says | 2:29:06 | 2:29:09
he still has full belief
in all-rounder, Moeen Ali, | 2:29:09 | 2:29:12
despite his recent run of poor form. | 2:29:12 | 2:29:14
He's taken only three wickets
and averaged 19 runs | 2:29:14 | 2:29:16
with the bat this series. | 2:29:16 | 2:29:17
He is always a guy that
likes to keep playing. | 2:29:17 | 2:29:20
But... | 2:29:20 | 2:29:23
I have got full confidence in him
going forward, to be honest. | 2:29:23 | 2:29:26
I mean, it was only two months ago
we were talking about him being one | 2:29:26 | 2:29:29
of the best all-rounders
in the world. | 2:29:29 | 2:29:33
Now, he reached the milestone, what
was it, 2000 runs and 100 wickets. | 2:29:33 | 2:29:36
He got that quicker
than everyone else. | 2:29:36 | 2:29:40
England now go to Sydney having
avoided the whitewash which was | 2:29:40 | 2:29:44
important, but they can get a win
with the final Test match. Mike, | 2:29:44 | 2:29:47
thank you. Starting the New Year
battling a cold. I sound a bit | 2:29:47 | 2:29:55
husky. | 2:29:55 | 2:30:00
Stay with us, the
headlines coming up. | 2:30:00 | 2:30:04
Hello, this is Breakfast
with Roger Johnson. | 2:30:20 | 2:30:25
Happy New Year, it is exactly
8:30am. | 2:30:25 | 2:30:29
Here's a summary of this
morning's main news. | 2:30:29 | 2:30:31
Millions of people around the world
have been celebrating | 2:30:31 | 2:30:33
the start of the new year. | 2:30:33 | 2:30:36
More than 100,000 ticketholders
watched London's midnight | 2:30:36 | 2:30:40
firework show from the banks
of the River Thames, and Hogmanay | 2:30:40 | 2:30:43
celebrations went ahead in Edinburgh
despite earlier travel | 2:30:43 | 2:30:45
and weather concerns. | 2:30:45 | 2:30:46
New York, Los Angles and Vancouver
are some of the latest | 2:30:46 | 2:30:49
cities to toast 2018. | 2:30:49 | 2:30:53
The five British citizens who died
when a seaplane crashed in Australia | 2:30:53 | 2:30:57
on New Year's Eve have been named. | 2:30:57 | 2:31:01
Richard Cousins, the chief executive
of the world's biggest | 2:31:01 | 2:31:05
catering group, Compass,
died in the crash along | 2:31:05 | 2:31:07
with his sons William and Edward. | 2:31:07 | 2:31:17
Mr Cousin's fiancee, Emma Bowden,
and her 11-year-old daughter also | 2:31:17 | 2:31:19
died as did the Australian pilot. | 2:31:19 | 2:31:21
The bodies of the victims
have been recovered. | 2:31:21 | 2:31:23
The incident is... Talks for itself.
This is people that have come over | 2:31:23 | 2:31:27
on holiday to visit Australia, they
were in one of the most beautiful | 2:31:27 | 2:31:31
parts of the world, and for this to
happen to them at a place like that | 2:31:31 | 2:31:35
is nothing more than just project. | 2:31:35 | 2:31:37
Scores of people were left stranded
in Liverpool and forced to spend | 2:31:37 | 2:31:41
the night in emergency accommodation
after a fire destroyed more | 2:31:41 | 2:31:51
than 1,000 cars parked in a car park
close to the city's Arena. | 2:31:52 | 2:31:55
No-one was hurt but residents
in nearby apartments were evacuated | 2:31:55 | 2:31:57
as the fire service tackled
the blaze, which it describes | 2:31:57 | 2:32:04
as one
of the worst it had ever dealt with. | 2:32:04 | 2:32:07
Britain's trains are the oldest
since current records began, | 2:32:07 | 2:32:09
according to figures
from a transport watchdog. | 2:32:09 | 2:32:11
Passengers are travelling
in carriages which were typically | 2:32:11 | 2:32:13
built in the mid-1990s. | 2:32:13 | 2:32:14
The Office of Rail and Road says
older rolling stock can lead | 2:32:14 | 2:32:17
to problems with reliability
and poorer performance. | 2:32:17 | 2:32:19
The Department for Transport says
4,500 new carriages will be | 2:32:19 | 2:32:21
introduced across Britain by 2024. | 2:32:21 | 2:32:29
There are reports to more people
have been killed in continuing | 2:32:29 | 2:32:32
anti-government protests in Iran
this morning, it comes after the | 2:32:32 | 2:32:36
country's president appealed on
national television to appeal for | 2:32:36 | 2:32:39
calm. Hassan Rouhani said people
would have the right to protest but | 2:32:39 | 2:32:43
warned of violence and public
disorder would not be tolerated. | 2:32:43 | 2:32:47
The North Korean leader
has said that he has | 2:32:47 | 2:32:49
a nuclear button on his desk. | 2:32:49 | 2:32:53
In a defiant New Year message,
Kim Jong-Un says now that | 2:32:53 | 2:32:56
North Korea had developed
the capability to hit all of the US | 2:32:56 | 2:32:59
mainland with its nuclear weapons,
Washington would never start a war. | 2:32:59 | 2:33:02
He added he would not order the use
of weapons unless his country's | 2:33:02 | 2:33:05
security was threatened. | 2:33:05 | 2:33:09
A small passenger plane has crashed
in a tourist area of Costa Rica, | 2:33:09 | 2:33:12
killing ten Americans
and two local pilots. | 2:33:12 | 2:33:14
It was travelling to the capital
San Jose from the mountainous region | 2:33:14 | 2:33:24
of Punta Islita, near
Bejuco, an area popular | 2:33:24 | 2:33:26
with tourists on the Pacific coast. | 2:33:26 | 2:33:27
The cause of the crash
is not yet known. | 2:33:27 | 2:33:29
Local reports say five
of the passengers shared | 2:33:29 | 2:33:31
the same surname. | 2:33:31 | 2:33:34
California has become the largest
state in the United States to | 2:33:34 | 2:33:37
legalise recreational cannabis use. | 2:33:37 | 2:33:42
Adults aged over 21 will be allowed
to possess up to an ounce | 2:33:42 | 2:33:45
of the drug and to grow six
marijuana plants at home. | 2:33:45 | 2:33:47
Californians voted in favour of
legalising cannabis 14 months ago. | 2:33:47 | 2:33:50
So far, only a dozen shops have
been approved to open. | 2:33:50 | 2:33:59
Special coins marking 100-year
anniversaries of women getting | 2:33:59 | 2:34:01
the right to vote and the end
of the First World War | 2:34:01 | 2:34:05
are being released this year. | 2:34:05 | 2:34:09
The Royal Mint will also introduce
ones celebrating 200 years | 2:34:09 | 2:34:11
since the publication
of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. | 2:34:11 | 2:34:15
The £2 coin marking
the anniversary of the First World | 2:34:15 | 2:34:18
War Armistice features a quote
from Wilfred Owen's | 2:34:18 | 2:34:23
poem Strange Meeting. | 2:34:23 | 2:34:26
Those are the main
stories this morning. | 2:34:26 | 2:34:31
Thank you for telling us about all
of your new year's resolutions, we | 2:34:31 | 2:34:34
wish you well in trying to keep
them. | 2:34:34 | 2:34:36 | |
That's it from Breakfast
for this morning. | 2:34:36 | 2:34:40
We're back tomorrow from 6am. | 2:34:40 | 2:34:44
On behalf of all the team, we wish
you a happy and healthy 2018. | 2:34:44 | 2:34:48
Now on BBC One, it's
time for Click. | 2:34:48 | 2:34:50
2017, the year of curious cats,
haunting holograms, | 2:34:50 | 2:34:58
and trigger-happy trackers. | 2:34:58 | 2:35:08
Hi there. | 2:35:27 | 2:35:29
It's time to look back
on the year in tech. | 2:35:29 | 2:35:31
As 2017 fades away, we could tell
you about all the technology | 2:35:31 | 2:35:34
news that has happened -
the hacking, the launching, | 2:35:34 | 2:35:38
the automatic driving -
but that would be just like last | 2:35:38 | 2:35:40
year and, come to think of it,
the year before that. | 2:35:40 | 2:35:44
So we prefer to share with you some
unforgettable memories from our year | 2:35:44 | 2:35:50
on Click, as we've travelled far
and wide to bring you some | 2:35:50 | 2:35:53
extraordinary moments. | 2:35:53 | 2:35:54
And we start with a personal
highlight for me. | 2:35:54 | 2:35:58
Back in October we travelled
to Japan and we got rare access | 2:35:58 | 2:36:01
to see how robots are helping
with the dangerous task of cleaning | 2:36:01 | 2:36:05
up the Fukushima nuclear power plant
after its meltdown in 2011. | 2:36:05 | 2:36:09
Scary? | 2:36:09 | 2:36:11
No. | 2:36:11 | 2:36:21 | |
I've worn plenty of
protective suits in my time, | 2:36:34 | 2:36:40
but they've always been to protect
the environment from my body. | 2:36:40 | 2:36:44
This time it is different. | 2:36:44 | 2:36:53
We're going inside unit
five, which is identical | 2:36:56 | 2:37:03
to the units which were
wracked by the explosions. | 2:37:03 | 2:37:06
As you can imagine, it is really
hot inside this suit. | 2:37:06 | 2:37:10
It's a confusing jumble
of walkways and machinery, | 2:37:10 | 2:37:20
and it's difficult to appreciate
that somewhere in here | 2:37:27 | 2:37:30
is a seven-storey high tank of water
called the primary containment | 2:37:30 | 2:37:32
vessel, the PCV. | 2:37:32 | 2:37:33
And now it's time to go right
underneath the reactor. | 2:37:33 | 2:37:36
Oh, wow. | 2:37:36 | 2:37:37
They think what happened
after the meltdowns | 2:37:37 | 2:37:38
is that the molten fuel just burned
through the bottom of the PCV | 2:37:38 | 2:37:42
and came through here to what's
known as the pedestal. | 2:37:42 | 2:37:44
That's where they think
the fuel is now. | 2:37:44 | 2:37:49
It's difficult enough getting
around this place on foot. | 2:37:49 | 2:37:53
Now imagine trying to remote control
a robot through this | 2:37:53 | 2:37:56
after the whole place has been
mangled by an explosion. | 2:37:56 | 2:37:58
Oh yes, and do it in the dark. | 2:37:58 | 2:38:02
This is Scorpion, its mission
was to hunt for fuel in unit two. | 2:38:02 | 2:38:05
Time is of the essence
for any Fukushima robot. | 2:38:05 | 2:38:10
The radiation will eventually damage
and disable its cameras, | 2:38:10 | 2:38:12
rendering it useless. | 2:38:12 | 2:38:17
But the entire mission can also be
upset by something far more basic. | 2:38:17 | 2:38:22
This is service hatch X6,
and in unit two they were hoping | 2:38:22 | 2:38:26
to send a Scorpion robot down this
ramp to film the molten | 2:38:26 | 2:38:29
fuel at the bottom. | 2:38:29 | 2:38:38
But it got caught halfway down
so it never made it, | 2:38:38 | 2:38:43
and they didn't get any footage
or evidence of where the fuel was. | 2:38:43 | 2:38:46
In unit three the water's much
higher, so they had to think | 2:38:46 | 2:38:49
of another way to get a robot in. | 2:38:49 | 2:38:51
That's where the mini
sunfish came in. | 2:38:51 | 2:38:52
Well, actually, that's
where the mini sunfish came in. | 2:38:52 | 2:38:55
Built to fit through this 15
centimetre pipe, mini sunfish | 2:38:55 | 2:38:58
is a tiny underwater robot with five
propellers, two cameras, | 2:38:58 | 2:39:01
and four human operators. | 2:39:01 | 2:39:11
300 kilometres away from Fukushima,
in Toshiba's Yokohama R&D centre, | 2:39:12 | 2:39:17
I came face-to-face with the star
of the investigation. | 2:39:17 | 2:39:28
In July this year, mini sunfish
was successful in finding melted | 2:39:31 | 2:39:33
clumps of material that could be
fuel debris in the | 2:39:33 | 2:39:36
pedestal in unit three. | 2:39:36 | 2:39:37
Decommissioning the site
could take 40 years and it may | 2:39:37 | 2:39:39
cost 8 trillion yen. | 2:39:39 | 2:39:40
Those little robots have a lot
riding on their tiny backs. | 2:39:40 | 2:39:47
Ever wondered what cats get up
to when no-one's there? | 2:39:54 | 2:40:03
Meet Roxie and Zara,
who seemed agreeable in taking part | 2:40:03 | 2:40:05
in some gadget testing. | 2:40:05 | 2:40:08
Oh, sorry. | 2:40:08 | 2:40:16
If you've ever wanted to watch,
talk to, or even play with your cats | 2:40:16 | 2:40:19
when you're not with them,
then this could help. | 2:40:19 | 2:40:25
Once the device is connected
to your home wi-fi, you can log | 2:40:25 | 2:40:28
in via the app anywhere you can
get your phone online. | 2:40:28 | 2:40:31
There's a laser game to play,
snacks at the tap of an icon, | 2:40:31 | 2:40:34
and a function to proudly make
and share videos and cat snaps. | 2:40:34 | 2:40:44
This rather unusual-looking setup
works in quite a similar way. | 2:40:45 | 2:40:52
There's a camera so that you can
see the cats remotely, | 2:40:52 | 2:40:55
also the ability to give them food
wherever you are. | 2:40:55 | 2:40:57
Plus this toy, which is apparently
something that cats | 2:40:57 | 2:40:59
might like to play with. | 2:40:59 | 2:41:04
Zara and Roxie were possibly
slightly intimidated by the jolting | 2:41:04 | 2:41:09
of the feathery thing,
and the app was extremely | 2:41:09 | 2:41:12
temperamental, making set-up
a rather tedious experience. | 2:41:12 | 2:41:22
The PetPace Smart Collar has been
around a little while now | 2:41:22 | 2:41:24
and is available for cats and dogs. | 2:41:24 | 2:41:26
It allows owners to keep
an eye on temperature, | 2:41:26 | 2:41:28
pulse, breathing rate,
heartrate variability, and even | 2:41:28 | 2:41:38
the positions the pet is in, so it
could be particularly beneficial | 2:41:41 | 2:41:44
if there are health concerns
or an injury to keep an eye on. | 2:41:44 | 2:41:50
Meanwhile, there seems to be a game
of cat-and-mouse going on here, | 2:41:50 | 2:41:53
the latter played by
a remote-controlled rodent. | 2:41:53 | 2:41:55
Although it actually consists
of the mouse chasing the cat, | 2:41:55 | 2:41:58
which probably says it
all about my day's filming. | 2:41:58 | 2:42:00
That was Lara with some pretty
disinterested interviewees. | 2:42:00 | 2:42:02
You can't win them all. | 2:42:02 | 2:42:12
You know us, we'll report
from wherever we find a good story, | 2:42:12 | 2:42:21
and there have been
so many great ones, | 2:42:21 | 2:42:23
so many successful ones
in Africa this year. | 2:42:23 | 2:42:25
Back in June, Dan Simmons went
to Tanzania to see the first stages | 2:42:25 | 2:42:28
of what could be a global
revolution in education. | 2:42:28 | 2:42:35
We're travelling a long way from any
town or city to visit some | 2:42:35 | 2:42:39
of the 200 children in Tata village
in northern Tanzania. | 2:42:39 | 2:42:44
We are booting up the
tablet, the first one. | 2:42:44 | 2:42:50
The whole programme
is in Swahili so the local | 2:42:50 | 2:42:52
children can understand. | 2:42:52 | 2:42:57
I think they're going
to need more tablets! | 2:42:57 | 2:43:06
Tata is one of about 150 villages
in Tanzania chosen as the testbed | 2:43:06 | 2:43:09
for the Global Learning XPRIZ. | 2:43:09 | 2:43:15
Within a few months,
4,000 tablets will be given out. | 2:43:15 | 2:43:21
The challenge - to teach 7
to 11-year-olds to read, write, | 2:43:21 | 2:43:24
and do maths over the next year. | 2:43:24 | 2:43:25
The most effective app
will win $10 million. | 2:43:25 | 2:43:28
The prize here, though,
will be much more valuable. | 2:43:28 | 2:43:31
Older children can walk up to four
hours to get to and from school, | 2:43:31 | 2:43:39
for younger ones like seven-year-old
Amina that is simply too far. | 2:43:39 | 2:43:42
She has been lucky, she is one
of those who has been chosen to take | 2:43:42 | 2:43:46
part in the XPRIZ challenge. | 2:43:46 | 2:43:49
At the start she has not seen
a tablet before so she is not used | 2:43:49 | 2:43:52
to touching screens. | 2:43:52 | 2:43:53
When it comes to reading,
she does not know more than one | 2:43:53 | 2:43:56
or two words in a sentence. | 2:43:56 | 2:43:57
But John, who was with the project,
thinks the tablet will help her | 2:43:57 | 2:44:00
eventually to read fluently. | 2:44:00 | 2:44:02
The problem is that there
are about 60 to 100 million kids | 2:44:02 | 2:44:08
who have no access to school,
because school is too far. | 2:44:08 | 2:44:12
Then you have 250 million more
who go to school and leave | 2:44:12 | 2:44:14
without ever having learnt to read
or write a word. | 2:44:14 | 2:44:20
These are kids in Botswana, Boston,
Brighton, it does not matter. | 2:44:20 | 2:44:27
Kids go to school all over the world
and they go and don't learn. | 2:44:27 | 2:44:30
Why is that? | 2:44:30 | 2:44:31
That's the question
we're trying to address. | 2:44:31 | 2:44:33
In our greatest desire,
every single child on planet Earth | 2:44:33 | 2:44:35
has access to a world-class
education in the palm of her hand. | 2:44:35 | 2:44:43
We're hoping to be back next year
to see how the teams get along, | 2:44:43 | 2:44:48
but for now it's
time to say goodbye. | 2:44:48 | 2:44:55
We've brought some
biscuits to say thank you, | 2:44:55 | 2:44:57
and suddenly the difficulties
the team will face when they | 2:44:57 | 2:44:59
arrive became clear. | 2:44:59 | 2:45:04
With just 20 or so tablets
per village, there simply won't be | 2:45:04 | 2:45:06
enough for everyone to take part. | 2:45:06 | 2:45:08
To reduce potential jealousy,
the tablets will be locked to only | 2:45:08 | 2:45:10
run the educational software,
but everyone wants one. | 2:45:10 | 2:45:12
A village of mamma has been chosen
to settle any dispute. | 2:45:12 | 2:45:15
And the scheme's partners, UNESCO,
will be asking some other important | 2:45:15 | 2:45:18
questions about tablets too. | 2:45:18 | 2:45:19
We are doing assessment
of the social and emotional | 2:45:19 | 2:45:21
impact of such learning,
because we expect some | 2:45:21 | 2:45:23
criticism from that side. | 2:45:23 | 2:45:24
We are engaging with
the psychologists, anthropologists, | 2:45:24 | 2:45:26
educationalists, to try
to understand what does | 2:45:26 | 2:45:27
it do to the child? | 2:45:27 | 2:45:31
Is it an option that is ethical
because children go to school, | 2:45:31 | 2:45:37
they are socialised also,
it's not only the cognitive | 2:45:37 | 2:45:43
learning, it's learning much more
to be part of the group. | 2:45:43 | 2:45:46
It's just like back at home. | 2:45:46 | 2:45:48
Now they've all got tablets, | 2:45:48 | 2:45:49
they're not really
talking to anybody. | 2:45:49 | 2:45:54
That was Dan in Tanzania. | 2:45:55 | 2:46:00
Next, we're off to Germany
with Kate, who's found | 2:46:00 | 2:46:02
an elevator that goes sideways. | 2:46:02 | 2:46:06
ThE picturesque town of Rottweil,
Germany, home to fearsome dogs, | 2:46:12 | 2:46:16
chocolate box buildings
and a 246-metre tower | 2:46:16 | 2:46:19
housing the tallest
observation deck in Germany. | 2:46:19 | 2:46:28
But this tower isn't
just about great views. | 2:46:28 | 2:46:30
Built by an elevator
company ThyssenKrupp, | 2:46:30 | 2:46:32
it has 12 lift shafts
running inside it. | 2:46:32 | 2:46:33
One is used to transport
passengers to the top, | 2:46:33 | 2:46:36
the others to test the latest
in elevator technology. | 2:46:36 | 2:46:46
The inside area is in
the core of the tower. | 2:46:52 | 2:46:55
Only a few people really
have the chance to see what we have | 2:46:55 | 2:46:58
built and what is running there. | 2:46:58 | 2:46:59
An elevator without any ropes. | 2:46:59 | 2:47:00
This is revolutionary. | 2:47:00 | 2:47:01
Instead of steel ropes, the cabin
is carried by linear motors, | 2:47:01 | 2:47:04
it is the same tech that drives
Japan's bullet train. | 2:47:04 | 2:47:08
As well as eliminating the speed
and height restrictions | 2:47:08 | 2:47:11
of today's technology,
this allows passengers to travel | 2:47:11 | 2:47:13
sideways as well as up and down,
just like Willy Wonka's fantastical | 2:47:13 | 2:47:15
elevator in Charlie
and the Chocolate Factory. | 2:47:15 | 2:47:19
Behind the scenes, behind
the car, we changed this | 2:47:19 | 2:47:21
exchanger 90 degrees. | 2:47:21 | 2:47:30
Get prepared for the horizontal
movement while people | 2:47:30 | 2:47:33
are entering and leaving. | 2:47:33 | 2:47:35
As soon as the doors close we can go
sideways to the next shaft. | 2:47:35 | 2:47:38
And this is the most important thing
that we come back to - | 2:47:38 | 2:47:41
a circulating system. | 2:47:41 | 2:47:43
So reinventing the paternoster. | 2:47:43 | 2:47:46
Using this circulating
pattern means a lift shaft | 2:47:46 | 2:47:55
could hold ten or more cabins, much
more efficient than the single up | 2:47:55 | 2:47:58
and down right that today's
elevators are limited to. | 2:47:58 | 2:48:00
And this will only become more
important when we start looking | 2:48:00 | 2:48:03
at elevators reaching perhaps 1,000
or more metres into the sky. | 2:48:03 | 2:48:08
That was Kate going sideways! | 2:48:09 | 2:48:14
And so are we now. | 2:48:14 | 2:48:18
We're off to the place where China
makes the world's tech, | 2:48:18 | 2:48:20
the city of Shenzhen,
where last month I got exclusive | 2:48:20 | 2:48:24
prelaunch access to see how
a new smart phone is born. | 2:48:24 | 2:48:31
They make loads of different types
of phones in this factory, | 2:48:31 | 2:48:41
so to keep the 5T a secret
from all the other workers, | 2:48:41 | 2:48:44
everything happens behind
the blue shroud of secrecy. | 2:48:44 | 2:48:46
Are you ready? | 2:48:46 | 2:48:47
Thank you. | 2:48:47 | 2:48:48
Come in. | 2:48:48 | 2:48:51
Welcome to production line 27. | 2:48:51 | 2:49:00
The phone starts life
as just a tiny camera | 2:49:00 | 2:49:02
there and it is gradually assembled
around this U-shaped | 2:49:02 | 2:49:07
production line which means
by the time it gets to the end | 2:49:07 | 2:49:10
it is a fully featured phone. | 2:49:10 | 2:49:11
Just about there. | 2:49:11 | 2:49:12
This is the reason China
has come to dominate | 2:49:12 | 2:49:15
electronics manufacturing,
a ready supply of a disciplined, | 2:49:15 | 2:49:21
relatively low-cost workforce. | 2:49:21 | 2:49:22
Each person here has one unique job
which requires concentration, | 2:49:22 | 2:49:25
speed and precision. | 2:49:25 | 2:49:35
A single speck of dust caught
in the camera lens and the finished | 2:49:40 | 2:49:43
phone will be rejected. | 2:49:43 | 2:49:44
What I found most surprising
about this is it is all people. | 2:49:44 | 2:49:48
I would have thought with this kind
of high precision job these phones | 2:49:48 | 2:49:51
would have been built solely
by machines, but it is | 2:49:51 | 2:49:53
pretty much all humans. | 2:49:53 | 2:49:54
This is where an unlucky few phones
are pulled off the production line | 2:49:54 | 2:49:57
to check extreme tolerance. | 2:49:57 | 2:50:05
Elsewhere, other test phones
escape that big plunge, | 2:50:05 | 2:50:10
but instead are dropped
5,000 times each. | 2:50:10 | 2:50:12
Others have their charging
ports wiggled and buttons | 2:50:12 | 2:50:14
pressed 10,000 times. | 2:50:14 | 2:50:21
With the launch over,
one class will nervously await | 2:50:21 | 2:50:23
the first reviews and more
importantly, the advance orders. | 2:50:23 | 2:50:28
And they will decide whether these
people will be joined | 2:50:28 | 2:50:30
by hundreds more or not. | 2:50:30 | 2:50:35
A fascinating glimpse behind
the curtain there in China. | 2:50:36 | 2:50:44
And now it's time to leave Earth
entirely for a few minutes | 2:50:44 | 2:50:46
to remember how the Click crew
explored the final frontier in VR. | 2:50:46 | 2:50:52
Virtual reality game
Star Trek Bridge Crew brings | 2:50:56 | 2:51:03
together up to four players,
each taking a different role | 2:51:03 | 2:51:05
on the bridge of a starship. | 2:51:05 | 2:51:09
That's brilliant. | 2:51:09 | 2:51:10
Incredible! | 2:51:10 | 2:51:12
Oh... | 2:51:12 | 2:51:13 | |
Oh my goodness, Mark! | 2:51:13 | 2:51:17
We're warping everybody. | 2:51:17 | 2:51:20
Wow! | 2:51:20 | 2:51:24 | |
That's pretty, isn't it? | 2:51:24 | 2:51:30
Wow. | 2:51:30 | 2:51:31 | |
We don't have time for sightseeing
though, as we receive a distress | 2:51:31 | 2:51:34
signal from a stricken vessel. | 2:51:34 | 2:51:35
My vessel has lost all power
and our life support systems | 2:51:35 | 2:51:38
are nearly exhausted. | 2:51:38 | 2:51:39
OK, so engineering -
can you transport the | 2:51:39 | 2:51:42
survivors back to here? | 2:51:42 | 2:51:43
I don't know. | 2:51:43 | 2:51:45
LAUGHTER. | 2:51:45 | 2:51:50
It's at this moment that the action
takes a turn which will appeal | 2:51:50 | 2:51:53
to Star Trek superfans. | 2:51:53 | 2:51:55
Wow! | 2:51:55 | 2:52:00 | |
It's a D51 cruiser. | 2:52:00 | 2:52:02
It's a Klingon D5 cruiser. | 2:52:02 | 2:52:04
OK, target it! | 2:52:04 | 2:52:09
Target destroyed. | 2:52:09 | 2:52:15
It feels like it's social VR
at its best, really. | 2:52:15 | 2:52:17
Communication is a must. | 2:52:17 | 2:52:18
If you don't have it, you're not
going to complete the mission. | 2:52:18 | 2:52:22
It's great for team building. | 2:52:22 | 2:52:23
I thought we actually had our lives
on the line for a minute. | 2:52:23 | 2:52:27
A couple of sticky moments
but I think we managed to keep it | 2:52:27 | 2:52:30
together as a crew and the result
was a successful mission. | 2:52:30 | 2:52:36
Now, one thing we love to do
on Click is to look at how things | 2:52:36 | 2:52:40
might change significantly
in the future. | 2:52:40 | 2:52:44
And one area that we think
is about to pop onto the scene | 2:52:44 | 2:52:47
and possibly on to many people's
plates is lab-grown meat. | 2:52:47 | 2:52:52
I'm talking burgers,
steaks and fish. | 2:52:52 | 2:52:53
Got a taste for it? | 2:52:53 | 2:52:58
Back in July, Kat Hawkins
visited the cultured food | 2:52:58 | 2:53:00
capital, San Francisco,
to see what's cooking. | 2:53:00 | 2:53:05
I've come to this lab
in the heart of Silicon valley | 2:53:07 | 2:53:09
to visit Impossible Foods. | 2:53:09 | 2:53:11
They claim to have invented
the food of the future - | 2:53:11 | 2:53:14
a completely meatless meat made
entirely of plants. | 2:53:14 | 2:53:22
Impossible Foods found that the key
ingredient that gives | 2:53:22 | 2:53:25
meat its characteristic irony taste
is a molecule found | 2:53:25 | 2:53:28
in most living things
and especially in animal muscle. | 2:53:28 | 2:53:33
Luckily, it's also found in plants. | 2:53:33 | 2:53:38
So this is your magic
ingredient right? | 2:53:38 | 2:53:40
Your plant-based blood. | 2:53:40 | 2:53:41
Right and it provides the explosion
of flavour that you get, | 2:53:41 | 2:53:45
it is the different between white
meat chicken with a beef burger. | 2:53:45 | 2:53:50
The company has recently flipped
the switch on its meatless | 2:53:50 | 2:54:00
meatpacking factory as it
ramps up production. | 2:54:00 | 2:54:03
This will eventually make
four million burgers a month, | 2:54:03 | 2:54:05
and the next aim is to move
into chicken, pork and lamb. | 2:54:05 | 2:54:08
But it's one thing being
a scientist who is enthralled | 2:54:08 | 2:54:10
by food tech and another to be
a chef using the ingredients | 2:54:10 | 2:54:13
produced on your
carefully crafted menu. | 2:54:13 | 2:54:16
I think we eat way too
much meat in general, | 2:54:16 | 2:54:19
so it's a good way to be
as close as possible to meat | 2:54:19 | 2:54:22
looks and tastes. | 2:54:22 | 2:54:24
The Impossible Burger is now
the only one Rocco has on his menu | 2:54:24 | 2:54:32
and he sells 250 of them a week. | 2:54:32 | 2:54:34
It seems like at this stage it might
be a novelty for Silicon valley | 2:54:34 | 2:54:38
diners with money to spend,
but of course, as always, | 2:54:38 | 2:54:40
the true test is in the tasting. | 2:54:40 | 2:54:42
OK, it's about to happen. | 2:54:42 | 2:54:49
It's really good. | 2:54:53 | 2:54:55
The texture is just like meat. | 2:54:55 | 2:54:58
It doesn't taste like mince beef. | 2:54:58 | 2:55:02
A little bit like mushrooms,
but I know there is no | 2:55:02 | 2:55:05
mushrooms in there. | 2:55:05 | 2:55:07
What comes across talking to Rocco
though, is how important | 2:55:07 | 2:55:12
is for his customers
that the flavour tastes close | 2:55:12 | 2:55:16
to meat while still being ethical. | 2:55:16 | 2:55:18
But what if you could serve up
animal flesh without a single | 2:55:18 | 2:55:21
creature being harmed? | 2:55:21 | 2:55:23
That's what this several companies,
inlcuding this small | 2:55:23 | 2:55:28
tech startup is working on. | 2:55:28 | 2:55:30
They plan to grow actual
fish from stem cells. | 2:55:30 | 2:55:35
Phyllis Foods takes a small sample
of cells from a real | 2:55:35 | 2:55:37
fish and cultures it up. | 2:55:37 | 2:55:41
One cell can theoretically become
one tonne of fish meat, | 2:55:41 | 2:55:44
but they are not there yet. | 2:55:44 | 2:55:47
We'll be on the market in three
years with products that | 2:55:47 | 2:55:50
are a new version of fish that
people haven't had before and then | 2:55:50 | 2:55:55
in five to six years we'll
have steaks and fillets, | 2:55:55 | 2:55:58
just like the fish you currently
eat at a supermarket, | 2:55:58 | 2:56:00
just like the fish you normally see
in the ocean. | 2:56:00 | 2:56:02
Kat Hawkins reporting
back in the summer. | 2:56:07 | 2:56:09
Now, from California
to the Netherlands where | 2:56:09 | 2:56:12
Nick witnessed a dance
with a new hologram effect. | 2:56:12 | 2:56:15
Today choreographers and dancers
of NDT are working with a new medium | 2:56:18 | 2:56:21
for artistic expression. | 2:56:21 | 2:56:25
They're taking two excerpts
from a show called Stop Motion | 2:56:25 | 2:56:27
and are adapting it
to include holographic projections. | 2:56:27 | 2:56:35
It's a really, bit treaty,
almost an IMAX type experience. | 2:56:35 | 2:56:37
Without the need for
glasses, you know? | 2:56:37 | 2:56:40
Every detail has been
carefully crafted. | 2:56:40 | 2:56:45
They're projecting a fallen white
giant and dust onto a black back | 2:56:45 | 2:56:48
drop playing with the themes
of light and dark and destruction. | 2:56:48 | 2:56:51
Technology needs to embrace the art. | 2:56:51 | 2:56:58
But not by sticking
out all by itself. | 2:56:58 | 2:57:00
It needs to help, it is like a glove
to the art, to the expression. | 2:57:00 | 2:57:06
The holographic illusion is created
with the help of two very high-end | 2:57:06 | 2:57:09
projectors and a special
lightweight mesh screen. | 2:57:09 | 2:57:11
By playing out videos
on the front mesh and back wall, | 2:57:11 | 2:57:14
it creates an optical illusion
of 3-D depth. | 2:57:14 | 2:57:19
For the performers it's actually
really good rig to work with, | 2:57:19 | 2:57:23
they can see the projections
on the side while they are | 2:57:23 | 2:57:25
on stage performing. | 2:57:25 | 2:57:29
With other systems, you don't really
get that same wall realistic. | 2:57:29 | 2:57:32
Dancers into position,
standby lighting and music, | 2:57:32 | 2:57:34
cue projection and action! | 2:57:34 | 2:57:36
MUSIC PLAYS. | 2:57:36 | 2:57:41
APPLAUSE. | 2:57:55 | 2:57:59
After all that globetrotting, I have
to say there is no place like home. | 2:58:07 | 2:58:10
There's no place like home. | 2:58:10 | 2:58:11
There's no place like home. | 2:58:11 | 2:58:12
There's no place like... | 2:58:12 | 2:58:13
Guards! | 2:58:13 | 2:58:22
Yes, banks, voting systems
and the NHS weren't the only ones | 2:58:22 | 2:58:24
to have been under attack in 2017. | 2:58:24 | 2:58:26
Even in my own castle
I had my hands full with this lot. | 2:58:26 | 2:58:29
We even lost our first
guest on the show. | 2:58:29 | 2:58:31
Sorry Ken. | 2:58:31 | 2:58:38
And in 2018, we'll be
going back into battle again, | 2:58:38 | 2:58:40
reporting from wherever we find
the best technology from around | 2:58:40 | 2:58:42
the globe and home. | 2:58:42 | 2:58:44
We will see you next year. | 2:58:44 | 2:58:50 |
