Hello, happy new Year, this is a

first with Roger Johnson. Huge

0:00:070:00:12

crowds gather all over the world to

celebrate the start of 2018. BONG.

0:00:120:00:24

Spectacular fireworks and big when

brought into New Year despite

0:00:240:00:27

warnings about the weather and

travel problems.

0:00:270:00:30

Good morning, it's Monday

the 1st of January.

0:00:410:00:43

Elsewhere in the news this morning:

0:00:430:00:45

Five British people,

including an 11-year-old girl,

0:00:450:00:48

are confirmed to have been killed

when a sea plane crashed

0:00:480:00:51

in Australia yesterday.

0:00:510:00:55

Firefighters have been battling

a blaze in a multi-storey car park

0:00:550:00:58

in Liverpool which has destroyed

up to 1,400 vehicles.

0:00:580:01:04

North Korea's leader

says his country's nuclear weapons

0:01:040:01:06

are a "reality, not a threat"

and the entire US mainland

0:01:060:01:09

is a target.

0:01:090:01:14

In sport, the winning run is over.

0:01:140:01:16

And it takes an injury time penalty

save to preserve Manchester City's

0:01:160:01:19

unbeaten record this season

as they're given a scare

0:01:190:01:21

at the Palace.

0:01:210:01:27

Happy New Year from BBC Breakfast!

From Parliament Square the final

0:01:270:01:35

preparations are under way for the

annual New Year's Day parade with

0:01:350:01:39

thousands of performers from around

the world like these guys on Texas!

0:01:390:01:44

Fantastic, doing it in style, bright

and early this New Year 's morning.

0:01:440:01:48

And Stav has the weather.

0:01:480:01:51

Happy New Year. Starting off with a

lot of showers around, wet and windy

0:01:510:01:55

in places but we should season

sunshine into the afternoon. The

0:01:550:01:59

start of 2018 is looking unsettled

the rest of the week. I will have

0:01:590:02:03

more in 15 minutes.

0:02:030:02:05

Good morning and happy new year.

0:02:050:02:07

First, our main story.

0:02:070:02:08

Millions of people around the world

have been celebrating

0:02:080:02:10

the start of 2018.

0:02:100:02:11

More than 100,000 ticketholders

watched London's midnight firework

0:02:110:02:13

show from the banks

of the River Thames,

0:02:130:02:16

and Hogmanay celebrations

went ahead in Edinburgh,

0:02:160:02:18

despite earlier travel

and weather concerns,

0:02:180:02:19

as Simon Clemison reports.

0:02:190:02:28

It was one party big Ben really

couldn't miss. BONG. Timings of the

0:02:280:02:34

new year despite being silenced at

the moment while repairs are carried

0:02:340:02:37

out. Q 12,000 fireworks. Whatever

you did to finish 2017, whatever you

0:02:370:02:50

are doing to start 2018, are these

11 minutes and 15 second in the

0:02:500:02:55

middle here in London when you look

up and forget to breathe. The

0:02:550:03:05

soundtrack dominated by female

artist, the centenary of women

0:03:050:03:09

beginning to get the vote one way

this year will be defined. What does

0:03:090:03:18

2018 hole to you? Best year ever!

Why is that? A levels, starting our

0:03:180:03:25

careers.

We will get into

university.

Do you want to look at

0:03:250:03:31

my kilts?

In Scotland, Storm Dylan

had been an unwelcome party guest

0:03:310:03:39

during the day but given the

importance of Hogmanay it would take

0:03:390:03:42

a lot to spoil the celebrations,

even though winds of more than 70

0:03:420:03:46

miles an hour had hit some parts. In

Sydney, another quiet night, the

0:03:460:03:51

Harbour bridge somewhere in this pic

just. Rainbow colours, a tribute to

0:03:510:03:56

Australia's legalisation of same-sex

marriage in 2017. This city after

0:03:560:04:03

city around the world running the

new year, Hong Kong erupted, Athens

0:04:030:04:07

glowed. And Moscow sparkled. Still

some countries to go but now New

0:04:070:04:14

York has marked the moment, the last

inhabited island American Samoa will

0:04:140:04:19

celebrate 25 hours after

neighbouring islands first began the

0:04:190:04:21

party.

0:04:210:04:25

What the celebrations all around the

world. We have some sad news to

0:04:250:04:29

bring you from Australia, five

British citizens who died when a

0:04:290:04:34

seaplane crashed on New Year's Eve

has been named. The Australian pilot

0:04:340:04:38

also died after crashing into a

river 30 miles north of Sydney. I've

0:04:380:04:42

to New South Wales this morning and

Phil Mercer is our correspondent. We

0:04:420:04:47

are watching the scene is a

celebration around the world moments

0:04:470:04:50

ago but a real sense of tragedy

there this morning.

0:04:500:04:55

Yes, it is what the Australian

police have been telling us today,

0:04:550:04:59

it is an absolute tragedy that a

family who had travelled halfway

0:04:590:05:02

around the world from Britain only

to die in one of the most dutiful

0:05:020:05:07

places on the planet. The victims

have been identified as 58-year-old

0:05:070:05:12

Richard Cousins, he was a very

successful businessman, chief

0:05:120:05:17

executive of compass, the largest

catering group in the world, he was

0:05:170:05:20

a former board member of Tesco and

due to retire in March. He died

0:05:200:05:26

alongside two sons in their early

and mid- 20s. Also on board, Emma

0:05:260:05:31

Bowden, she was Mr cousins Beyonce

and she died alongside her

0:05:310:05:37

11-year-old daughter, so the police

trying to establish how and why this

0:05:370:05:44

accident could happen on a routine

flight from Jerusalem Bay to Sydney

0:05:440:05:49

Harbour -- miss the cut's brother.

0:05:490:05:53

Scores of people who had travelled

to Liverpool to celebrate

0:05:530:05:55

the New Year have had to spend

the night in a temporary shelter

0:05:550:05:59

after a fire in a multi-storey car

park next to the city's Echo arena

0:05:590:06:03

destroyed more than 1,000 vehicles.

0:06:030:06:04

Steve Saul reports.

0:06:040:06:13

The fire is thought to have started

in one vehicle on the third floor of

0:06:130:06:17

the car park will stop emergency

services arrived within minutes but

0:06:170:06:21

the flames quickly spread to other

floors. Police say 1400 cars had

0:06:210:06:25

been destroyed. Up to 4000 people

are thought to have been left

0:06:250:06:29

stranded in the city. The arena on

the city 's waterfront was hosting

0:06:290:06:33

the Liverpool International horse

show, no spectators or animals had

0:06:330:06:37

been injured.

My car.

All of our

belongings in it.

Everything. We

0:06:370:06:43

hear from Northern Ireland, my

suitcase, all of my things in it,

0:06:430:06:48

all gone.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue

said it is one of the biggest fires

0:06:480:06:52

that have ever dealt with with crews

working under challenging conditions

0:06:520:06:55

from the outside of the building

because of a real fear of structural

0:06:550:06:59

collapse.

The difficulty that we

have is because this is so

0:06:590:07:02

deep-seated, is to physically be

able to get into, right into the

0:07:020:07:07

middle of the building to put the

fire out which clearly is the extent

0:07:070:07:13

of which the fire has taken hold

fair, we will not be able to do that

0:07:130:07:18

quite some time, given the

structural stability issues with the

0:07:180:07:21

building as well.

Liverpool City

Council are expected to help make

0:07:210:07:26

arrangements to get those who have

been left in the city back home

0:07:260:07:30

later. Temperate parking

arrangements have been made the

0:07:300:07:33

arena operate as normal.

0:07:330:07:36

The North Korean leader has said

that he has a nuclear button

0:07:360:07:40

-- Britain's trains are the oldest

since current records began,

0:07:400:07:43

according to figures

from a transport watchdog.

0:07:430:07:45

Passengers are travelling

in carriages which were typically

0:07:450:07:47

built in the mid 1990s.

0:07:470:07:48

The Office of Rail and Road says

older rolling stock can lead

0:07:480:07:51

to problems with reliability

and poorer performance.

0:07:510:07:53

The Department for Transport says

4,500 new carriages will be

0:07:530:07:56

introduced across Britain by 2024.

0:07:560:08:03

The President of Iran

has appealed for calm,

0:08:030:08:05

saying people would have the right

to protest but not to commit acts

0:08:050:08:09

of violence, amid continuing

anti-government protests.

0:08:090:08:10

In his first public comments

since demonstrations

0:08:100:08:12

against the government began

on Thursday, Hassan Rouhani warned

0:08:120:08:14

that violence and public disorder

would not be tolerated.

0:08:140:08:24

TRANSLATION:

0:08:240:08:28

The atmosphere for criticism,

protest within a legal framework is

0:08:280:08:32

absolutely free but the atmosphere

for destruction and the rest is

0:08:320:08:36

definitely not an atmosphere which

people would tolerate.

0:08:360:08:39

The North Korean leader has said

that he has a nuclear button

0:08:390:08:42

on his desk.

0:08:420:08:43

In a defiant New Year message,

Kim Jong-un said the United States

0:08:430:08:46

would now never be able to start

a war with North Korea.

0:08:460:08:49

Our correspondent Sophie Long

is in the South Korean capital Seoul

0:08:490:08:52

Our correspondent Sophie Long

is in the South Korean capital Seoul

0:08:520:08:55

for us this morning.

0:08:550:08:56

Sophie, will this just be seen

as another in a long line of threats

0:08:560:09:00

against the US?

0:09:000:09:04

I think in terms of his message, to

the United States, there was nothing

0:09:040:09:10

new, and other defined message

saying we have a nuclear capability

0:09:100:09:14

that can strike anywhere on

mainland. He also said I have a

0:09:140:09:18

nuclear button my desk. Does he have

the capability to strike the US

0:09:180:09:22

mainland in the way that he has

posted about? The answer is we don't

0:09:220:09:26

know. When he carried out the sixth

and most powerful nuclear test in

0:09:260:09:31

September 2017 and he carried out a

test launch of an intercontinental

0:09:310:09:35

ballistic missile Mr Bob with

missile which he said could strike

0:09:350:09:39

anywhere on the mainland. Whether he

has the ability to miniaturising

0:09:390:09:43

nuclear capability and put it on a

missile that can reach the United

0:09:430:09:47

States, we don't yet know although

many people and analysts think it

0:09:470:09:50

may not be far off doing that. It

was slightly more surprising if he

0:09:500:09:54

had a much more consolatory tone

towards South Korea, his neighbour

0:09:540:09:58

but also the United States's ally.

He said to them that he was open to

0:09:580:10:04

dialogue and debate even consider

sending North Korean athletes to the

0:10:040:10:07

Winter Olympics which are due to

take place in South Korea in

0:10:070:10:10

February which is important to the

government here, President Moon has

0:10:100:10:13

said it to happen he thinks it could

be a turning point in relations with

0:10:130:10:17

North Korea.

0:10:170:10:19

A small passenger plane has crashed

in a tourist area of Costa Rica,

0:10:190:10:23

killing 10 Americans

and two local pilots.

0:10:230:10:25

It was travelling to the capital

San Jose from the mountainous region

0:10:250:10:33

of Punta Islita, near Bejuco,

an area popular with tourists

0:10:330:10:36

on the Pacific coast.

0:10:360:10:37

The cause of the crash

is not yet known.

0:10:370:10:40

Local reports say five

of the passengers shared

0:10:400:10:42

the same surname.

0:10:420:10:43

The Archbishop of Canterbury has

paid tribute to emergency workers

0:10:430:10:46

in his New Year's Day message.

0:10:460:10:48

Justin Welby said 2018 could be

defined either by human suffering

0:10:480:10:52

or the compassionate response to it.

0:10:520:10:53

Here's our religion

editor Martin Bashir.

0:10:530:11:05

To the unrelenting dedication of the

emergency services, Archbishop

0:11:050:11:09

Justin Welby chose the London

ambulance headquarters in Waterloo

0:11:090:11:12

to deliver his New Year message. And

he began by describing the Terara

0:11:120:11:17

attack on nearby London Bridge and

Borough Market.

On the third of June

0:11:170:11:21

as the terrifying events unfolded on

London Bridge and in Borough Market,

0:11:210:11:25

staff took over the 100 calls from

those caught in the atrocities.

He

0:11:250:11:29

went on to catalogue other terror

attacks at Manchester, Westminster,

0:11:290:11:34

Finsbury Park and Parsons Green,

along with the tragedy at Grenfell

0:11:340:11:39

Tower.

I visited Grenfell Tower

while it was still burning, I

0:11:390:11:43

remember the desperation and sorrow.

Alright? Visiting Borough Market six

0:11:430:11:49

months after the attack, Justin

Welby witnessed the recovery of a

0:11:490:11:53

community that, like others, has

inspired the nation. In concluding

0:11:530:11:57

his message, the Archbishop of what

would define us in the year ahead?

0:11:570:12:03

Will it be the depth of suffering or

the breadth of compassion? The

0:12:030:12:08

darkness or the light of human

kindness?

It is a choice. But not

0:12:080:12:13

one we have to make a loan. Jesus

Christ, the light of the world,

0:12:130:12:18

weeks for all struggles, works for

our healing, and invites us to walk

0:12:180:12:22

in his light. He is right there with

us in the midst of everything. May I

0:12:220:12:27

wish you all a very happy New Year.

Martin Bashir, BBC News, Borough

0:12:270:12:36

Market, London.

0:12:360:12:37

Special coins marking 100-year

anniversaries of women getting

0:12:370:12:39

the right to vote and the end

of the First World War

0:12:390:12:42

are being released this year.

0:12:420:12:44

The Royal Mint will also introduce

ones celebrating 200 years

0:12:440:12:46

since the publication

of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.

0:12:460:12:51

The two-pound coin,

marking the anniversary

0:12:510:12:52

of the First World War Armistice,

features a quote from Wilfred Owen's

0:12:520:12:57

poem Strange Meeting,

which says "the truth untold,

0:12:570:12:59

the pity of war".

0:12:590:13:05

That's this morning's main stories.

0:13:050:13:10

Good morning to you if you just

joined us and a happy New Year from

0:13:100:13:14

all of the team at BBC Breakfast,

the first editions of the papers of

0:13:140:13:19

2018 are here of course so let's

take a look at the front pages. What

0:13:190:13:23

the fireworks as you would expect on

the front pages. The Guardian has

0:13:230:13:28

the view from the Thames, the London

eye and all of the fireworks going

0:13:280:13:32

off beyond it. The Daily Telegraph

has textures from, but looks like

0:13:320:13:42

Sydney, the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

It is. Red sky at night New Year 's

0:13:420:13:46

delight. The main story on the front

of the Daily Telegraph today is

0:13:460:13:51

Winter flu plunges hospitals into

chaos. But is their main story. The

0:13:510:13:56

Times has a slightly more personal,

a smaller picture I guess, 2018 lit

0:13:560:14:00

up a sparklers in Edinburgh by some

of revellers there. It says here

0:14:000:14:05

about jobs and house prices up big

at the start of 2018. Some of the

0:14:050:14:09

tabloids now. The sun has the

terrible story from Australia of the

0:14:090:14:14

British people, five actually have

been confirmed to have died in the

0:14:140:14:19

seaplane crash, the front page

there. The Mirror has a campaign,

0:14:190:14:23

Lord Winston backing a campaign, let

hospitals -- hospital patient parks

0:14:230:14:29

are free. The Duke of Edinburgh is

on the front page of them are, the

0:14:290:14:33

mail as well, he said something

about a man with a beard and asked

0:14:330:14:37

Princess and about it apparently, at

centre came yesterday, with the man

0:14:370:14:42

was a terrorist. He has been accused

of another slight gaffe. And

0:14:420:14:46

finally, the daily express, diabetes

drug whose memory. It is a hope for

0:14:460:14:51

a breakthrough in the battle against

Alzheimer's. And the Duke of

0:14:510:14:55

Edinburgh on the front page there as

well. It is 6:15 AM, good morning.

0:14:550:15:00

You're watching Breakfast.

0:15:000:15:03

The main stories this morning:

0:15:070:15:08

Thousands of people gathered

to watch spectacular firework

0:15:080:15:10

displays in London and Edinburgh

despite warning about bad weather

0:15:100:15:13

and travel problems.

0:15:130:15:18

Australian police have confirmed

that the British head of the giant,

0:15:180:15:24

Compass, catering group died,

with four members of his family

0:15:240:15:26

in yesterday's plane

crash outside Sydney.

0:15:260:15:30

Here's Stav with a look

at this morning's weather.

0:15:300:15:42

The first one of 2018. Happy New

Year. This week is looking pretty

0:15:420:15:47

unsettled. More on that in a moment.

Today, a lot of wind.

0:15:470:15:53

unsettled. More on that in a moment.

Today, a lot of wind. Rain at times.

0:15:530:15:55

Improving to the afternoon. Low

pressure across the north of the UK.

0:15:550:16:00

This will bring wet weather through

the English Channel. Fairly strong

0:16:000:16:06

winds across southern counties of

England. The extent of the rain,

0:16:060:16:11

south Wales, towards the M4

corridor. Going east. To the north,

0:16:110:16:19

dry weather with sunshine this

morning. Wet and windy weather in

0:16:190:16:26

Northern Ireland and western parts

of Scotland. Cold air. Snow falling

0:16:260:16:30

over the high ground. Continuing to

move away, the low pressure, towards

0:16:300:16:37

the near continent, eventually

clearing the south-east. Sunshine

0:16:370:16:40

behind. Not a bad afternoon. Wet and

windy weather in the north of the UK

0:16:400:16:45

and in northern England as well.

Quite chilly. Improving towards

0:16:450:16:50

tonight to be a ridge of high

pressure building in. A perfect

0:16:500:16:55

recipe for a chilly night. Something

we have not seen in a few nights.

0:16:550:17:00

Frost and ice in central and

northern Scotland. Changing across

0:17:000:17:06

the west. The next area of low

pressure comes in through the

0:17:060:17:10

morning. Snow in the Pennines and

the Scottish mountains. Behind the

0:17:100:17:16

band of rain, improving sunshine and

showers. Mild in the south. Tuesday

0:17:160:17:21

and Wednesday, yet another area of

low pressure across the UK, bringing

0:17:210:17:24

windy gale force winds at times

Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

0:17:240:17:31

Blustery showers affecting western

areas. Some will be heavy.

0:17:310:17:36

Temperatures are where they should

be for the time of year. Further

0:17:360:17:41

areas of low pressure moving through

in the week ahead. Spells of heavy

0:17:410:17:46

rain. Turning cold on Friday. Back

to you. Thank you very much. That

0:17:460:17:52

was the weather forecast.

0:17:520:17:54

Around half a million people

are expected to turn out

0:17:540:17:57

in Central London for the annual

New Year's Day Parade.

0:17:570:18:00

Thousands of performers,

including marching bands,

0:18:000:18:02

cheerleaders, and stunt drivers

are set to entertain the crowds.

0:18:020:18:05

Not

0:18:050:18:06

Not content with all the frivolities

last night.

0:18:060:18:09

Breakfast's Graham Satchell

is getting a taste of the action

0:18:090:18:12

for us this morning.

0:18:120:18:19

Bright and early this morning. You

are not alone. Happy New Year.

Happy

0:18:190:18:25

New Year. We are not alone. We have

cheerleaders from all over the

0:18:250:18:31

southern States of America, mainly

from Texas, rehearsing for the

0:18:310:18:35

annual parade kicking off today.

About 8000 performers and half a

0:18:350:18:41

million people are expected on the

streets of London. You carry onward

0:18:410:18:45

Ching the girls and I will talk to

the director of the parade. Good

0:18:450:18:49

morning. -- watching.

This has been

going on for 30 years. We started

0:18:490:19:02

this because London was a grim place

at this time of year. We wanted to

0:19:020:19:09

liven up the city. Not only that, we

wanted something the whole family

0:19:090:19:13

could do to celebrate the new year.

New Year's is a bit of a drunken

0:19:130:19:22

event.

What are some of the

highlights?

We have the fabulous

0:19:220:19:29

marching bands from the US and all

over the world. We have

0:19:290:19:32

cheerleaders. We have all of the

competition, including floats, and

0:19:320:19:48

Showtime! Roll up, roll up, to the

greatest show on Earth.

Here is the

0:19:480:19:52

marching band. They are from Troy,

Ohio. You will notice that the

0:19:520:19:56

people we have with us are from

America. But there are floats and

0:19:560:20:01

marching bands and cheerleaders from

all over London and all over the

0:20:010:20:05

world. And here is Kathy from Ohio,

the band leader. You are the

0:20:050:20:11

bandleader, correct?

Yes. It is be

in London. We are looking forward to

0:20:110:20:17

the parade today. -- It is awesome

to be.

And you are from?

Troy, Ohio.

0:20:170:20:26

The band has 89 people. It is a high

school band. We are excited to be

0:20:260:20:32

here today.

What does it mean for

your students to be here in a band

0:20:320:20:38

like this?

It is a family. We

celebrate together, we have sad

0:20:380:20:44

times together, and we take

vacations together.

How is it to be

0:20:440:20:48

in London today?

A great time. We

have great weather. Happy to be

0:20:480:20:54

here.

Thank you. There we are. It is

an ungodly hour to be honest to be

0:20:540:21:08

rehearsing in Parliament Square.

Things kick off at 12 o'clock. It is

0:21:080:21:11

free. You are more than welcome to

come down.

If you have any

0:21:110:21:14

neighbours near, they will not be

happy. Such enthusiasm at such an

0:21:140:21:26

ungodly hour. And you have had a go

at cheerleading before.

Yeah! On top

0:21:260:21:32

of a pyramid. It is very gymnastic!

It is a very difficult sport to do.

0:21:320:21:38

On more mainstream matters, what an

end to the year. City nearly slipped

0:21:380:21:47

up.

Christa palace must be kicking

themselves. -- Crystal Palace.

0:21:470:21:57

Time now for the sport with Mike.

0:21:570:21:59

Late penalty drama in both

of yesterday's Premier League games.

0:21:590:22:01

Crystal Palace missed a late one

to snatch a win over leaders

0:22:010:22:05

Manchester City, as their 18 match

unbeaten run came to an end

0:22:050:22:08

yesterday, while West Brom salvaged

a point with a dubious penalty over

0:22:080:22:11

Arsenal.

0:22:110:22:11

Adam Wild rounds up the action.

0:22:110:22:13

The message from fans was clear

enough. Still, it is hard to imagine

0:22:130:22:17

how things could get any better for

Manchester City. Never has a team

0:22:170:22:22

been so far ahead at the end of the

year. To their potential, there

0:22:220:22:25

seems no end. For Crystal Palace,

this seemed a new year lacking

0:22:250:22:31

celebration. The injured player's

replacement, Sergio Aguero, when the

0:22:310:22:39

closest in the first half. But this

was not the brilliant Crystal Palace

0:22:390:22:43

everyone feared. The target were

straightforward, but they hit it

0:22:430:22:49

seemingly less so. Crystal Palace

had aims of their own. They had

0:22:490:22:54

chances which they should have done

better. Everyone seemed to know it.

0:22:540:22:59

That, ultimately, for them, is how

this will be remembered. In the 90th

0:22:590:23:04

minute, awarded a penalty. Unable to

see the year out with a bang. Not

0:23:040:23:10

quite the perfect end to 2017 for

either side. Full boat, New Year's

0:23:100:23:16

Eve, as is so often the case, a bit

of anticlimax. -- for both. Arsene

0:23:160:23:25

Wenger took charge of Arsenal for

the 811th Premier League game. But

0:23:250:23:34

something had happened the

celebrations. It was not until the

0:23:340:23:39

second half until they found a way

through. Alexis Sanchez' free kick

0:23:390:23:45

deflected. But that was far from the

end of it. Two minutes remaining,

0:23:450:23:51

West from were offered a hand back

into it. This, a penalty, gladly

0:23:510:23:56

spoiling the special day for Arsene

Wenger. 1-1. Controversy, and drama,

0:23:560:24:06

to the very end.

0:24:060:24:08

Exeter Chiefs start the new year ten

points clear at the top

0:24:080:24:11

of the Rugby Union Premiership.

0:24:110:24:12

They beat Leicester 30 points

to six, with four second half tries

0:24:120:24:16

at Sandy Park.

0:24:160:24:16

That's Tiger's sixth

league defeat in a row,

0:24:160:24:17

their worst run in over 50 years.

0:24:180:24:19

Alex Gulrajani reports.

0:24:190:24:27

2017 will go down as a great year.

Exeter, champions for the first

0:24:270:24:33

time. With the chiefs clear at the

top of the table, the fascinating

0:24:330:24:40

could be memorable as well. The

hands were making far too many

0:24:400:24:46

errors. Chances missed. It took root

strength to put the league leaders

0:24:460:24:54

in charge. Don carried them. A gap

emerged between the sides. Exeter

0:24:540:25:00

needed no help. Jonny May is was in

a giving mood. Straight into the

0:25:000:25:07

arms of Henry Slade. Those

supporters may have stayed on their

0:25:070:25:14

feet, but there was still time for

more. The last play of the game. The

0:25:140:25:22

winning try to be the perfect end to

a monumental year for Exeter. BBC

0:25:220:25:27

News.

0:25:270:25:34

Yes, the Chiefs go marching on.

0:25:340:25:37

Scarlets won away at Cardiff Blues

14-11 in the Pro-14.

0:25:370:25:42

Cardiff led at half time

but Scarlets fought back soon

0:25:420:25:45

after the break.

0:25:450:25:45

Rhys Patchell's try,

their second of the match,

0:25:450:25:48

sealed the win.

0:25:480:25:48

The victory leaves them

top of conference B.

0:25:480:25:51

In the other Pro-14 fixture,

Ospreys beat Dragons 22-9.

0:25:510:25:54

England's cricketers have

arrived in Sydney ahead

0:25:540:25:56

of the Final Ashes Test which begins

in three days' time.

0:25:560:25:59

England head coach, Trevor Bayliss,

says he still has full belief

0:25:590:26:02

in all-rounder, Moeen Ali,

despite his recent run of poor form.

0:26:020:26:05

The 30-year-old has only taken three

wickets and averaged 19 runs

0:26:050:26:07

with the bat this series.

0:26:070:26:12

He is always a guy that likes to

keep playing. But... I have full

0:26:120:26:17

confidence in him going forward, to

be honest. I mean, it was only two

0:26:170:26:22

months ago we were talking about him

being one of the best all-rounders

0:26:220:26:25

in the world. Now, he reached the

milestone, what was it, 2000 runs

0:26:250:26:30

and 100 wickets. He got back quicker

than everyone else.

-- that quicker.

0:26:300:26:38

One other line from the England

squad, Ben Stokes won't join up

0:26:380:26:41

with the England One Day

squad in Australia.

0:26:410:26:43

Dawid Malan will replace

him in the squad.

0:26:430:26:46

British number one Johanna Konta

starts her season today with a match

0:26:460:26:49

against the American Madison Keys

at the Brisbane International.

0:26:490:26:51

It's her first tournament

with new coach Michael Joyce

0:26:510:26:54

and she says they are looking

forward to starting the season

0:26:540:26:57

together.

0:26:570:27:13

Andy Murray also returns. He is

playing in in an exhibition match.

0:27:130:27:20

He is down at number 16. That sounds

wrong.

I am sure he will go back up.

0:27:200:27:25

Just to be clear, you have a cold.

It isn't that you had a late-night?

0:27:250:27:31

No, of course not.

Thank you very

much. He will have more sport for us

0:27:310:27:41

during the course of the morning.

0:27:410:27:42

The start of the new year has

many of us reflecting on the past 12

0:27:420:27:46

months and what we want

to differently in the year ahead.

0:27:460:27:49

We've been asking people

in Manchester what they hope

0:27:490:27:56

Try and be a little bit healthier.

Umm, but not a lot different. Try to

0:27:560:28:05

enjoy ourselves.

To finish my

masters and get some work.

To help

0:28:050:28:09

more people out if they are hurt or

anything is wrong.

Eat healthy rude.

0:28:090:28:18

Go on a diet. But I don't really

want to.

Resolutions should not be

0:28:180:28:26

done on the first of January, they

should be ongoing throughout the

0:28:260:28:30

year. Keep maintaining them on to

them for the right reasons.

I never

0:28:300:28:35

stick to them.

Exactly, yeah. They

are affecting. Still, life goes on.

0:28:350:28:40

Why, because it is a new year, do

you...

It is a great idea, but if

0:28:400:28:46

you do not let them, you do not feel

bad when you do not stick to them.

I

0:28:460:28:52

am going to be a better husband, a

better father, and, umm, a better

0:28:520:28:57

person. I do a decent job already,

but there is always room for

0:28:570:29:01

improvement.

0:29:010:29:05

There is always room for

improvement. I think she was right,

0:29:050:29:08

do not set them, and you cannot fail

them.

0:29:080:29:11

We'd love to know what you are

hoping to achieve in 2018.

0:29:110:29:14

Let us know what your resolutions

are and whether you think you'll

0:29:140:29:17

stick to them.

Headlines are on the way.

0:29:210:29:26

Hello, this is Breakfast

with Roger Johnson.

0:30:150:30:17

Here's a summary of today's main

stories from BBC News.

0:30:170:30:22

Millions of people around the world

have been celebrating the start

0:30:220:30:26

of the new year.

0:30:260:30:27

More than 100,000 ticketholders

watched London's midnight firework

0:30:270:30:31

show from the banks

of the River Thames,

0:30:310:30:33

and Hogmanay celebrations

went ahead in Edinburgh

0:30:330:30:35

despite earlier travel

and weather concerns.

0:30:350:30:39

New York is one of the latest cities

to toast 2018 with events

0:30:390:30:42

in Times Square, Los Angeles

and Vancouver have to wait another

0:30:420:30:45

two hours before the year changes.

0:30:450:30:58

Five British citizens who died

when a seaplane crashed in Australia

0:30:580:31:01

on New Year's Eve have been named.

0:31:010:31:07

Richard Cousins, the Chief

Executive of the world's

0:31:070:31:10

biggest catering group Compass,

died in the crash along

0:31:100:31:12

with his sons William and Edward.

0:31:120:31:14

Mr Cousin's fiancee,

Emma Bowden and her eleven year

0:31:140:31:16

old daughter also died as did

the Australian pilot.

0:31:160:31:18

The bodies of the victims

have been recovered

0:31:180:31:21

Scores of people were left stranded

in Liverpool and forced

0:31:210:31:23

to spend the night in emergency

accommodation after a fire

0:31:230:31:26

destroyed more than 1,000 cars

parked close to the city's arena.

0:31:260:31:29

No-one was hurt but residents

in nearby apartments

0:31:290:31:31

were evacuated as the fire service

tackled the blaze which it describes

0:31:310:31:35

as one of the worst it

had ever dealt with.

0:31:350:31:38

Britain's trains are the oldest

since current records began,

0:31:380:31:41

according to figures

from a transport watchdog.

0:31:410:31:45

Passengers are travelling

in carriages which were typically

0:31:450:31:47

built in the mid 1990s.

0:31:470:31:50

The Office of Rail and Road says

older rolling stock can lead

0:31:500:31:53

to problems with reliability

and poorer performance.

0:31:530:31:55

The Department for Transport says

4,500 new carriages will be

0:31:550:31:58

introduced across Britain by 2024.

0:31:580:32:06

The President of Iran

has appealed for calm,

0:32:060:32:08

saying people would have the right

to protest but not to commit acts

0:32:080:32:11

of violence, amid continuing

anti-government protests.

0:32:110:32:14

In his first public comments

since demonstrations

0:32:140:32:16

against the government began

on Thursday, Hassan Rouhani warned

0:32:160:32:18

that violence and public disorder

would not be tolerated.

0:32:180:32:29

The North Korean leader has said

that he has a nuclear button

0:32:290:32:32

on his desk.

0:32:320:32:37

In a defiant New Year message,

Kim Jong Un says now that

0:32:370:32:40

North Korea had developed

the capability to hit all of the US

0:32:400:32:43

mainland with its nuclear weapons,

Washington would never start a war.

0:32:430:32:47

He added he would not order the use

of weapons unless his country's

0:32:470:32:50

security was threatened.

0:32:500:32:51

A small passenger plane has crashed

in a tourist area of Costa Rica,

0:32:510:32:54

killing 10 Americans

and two local pilots.

0:32:540:32:56

It was travelling to the capital

San Jose from the mountainous region

0:32:560:33:00

of Punta Islita near Bejuco,

an area popular with tourists

0:33:000:33:02

on the Pacific coast.

0:33:020:33:06

The cause of the crash

is not yet known.

0:33:060:33:09

Local reports say five

of the passengers shared

0:33:090:33:11

the same surname.

0:33:110:33:16

Special coins marking 100-year

anniversaries of women getting

0:33:160:33:18

the right to vote and the end

of the First World War

0:33:180:33:21

are being released this year.

0:33:210:33:23

The Royal Mint will also introduce

ones celebrating 200 years

0:33:230:33:25

since the publication

of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.

0:33:250:33:32

The two-pound coin marking

the anniversary of the First World

0:33:320:33:35

War Armistice features a quote

from Wilfred Owen's poem

0:33:350:33:37

Strange Meeting, which says

"the truth untold,

0:33:370:33:39

the pity of war".

0:33:390:33:48

Those are our main stories, happy

New Year. We will return with the

0:33:480:33:53

headlines at seven AM. Now we look

back at 2017.

0:33:530:33:57

Sir Bruce Forsyth, Sir Roger Moore,

Glenn Campbell and John Noakes -

year, and whose lives are celebrated

Is there time before we leave

for lesson number three?

0:35:110:35:23

Absolutely.

0:35:230:35:24

There's no sense in

going off half cocked.

0:35:240:35:29

Stir in some crushed ice,

0:35:380:35:40

Two olives.

0:35:400:35:40

That way you see they can gently

bounce up against each other.

0:35:400:35:46

I'm afraid the spectacle of two

olives gently bouncing up

0:35:460:35:48

against each other is

a pleasure I shall forego.

0:35:480:35:51

0:35:590:36:01

I really don't see myself

as a hero so I'd play it

Great big curtain rings!

0:36:140:36:17

I think they must have come

out of a giant's house!

0:36:170:36:20

I know - I will be an owl.

0:36:200:36:29

Our aim, we were told,

was to play one to one

0:36:290:36:32

through the camera.

0:36:320:36:33

Up and down with you.

0:36:330:36:38

And it works, that is why people

remember it because it was

0:36:380:36:41

as if we were talking only to them.

0:36:410:36:43

It's Windy Miller.

0:36:430:36:44

Hello, Windy.

0:36:440:36:47

Peel, Pugh, Barney McGrew,

Cuthbert, Dibble, Grubb.

0:36:470:36:55

Mr John Noakes!

0:36:550:36:59

I'm sure this does me good.

0:37:030:37:06

Oh, get off my foot.

0:37:060:37:12

While our animals are not

going to be happy,

0:37:120:37:14

they will be

going away on holiday,

0:37:140:37:16

they're going to spend it

in the country

0:37:160:37:19

but Lulu won't be there.

0:37:190:37:24

At this level, the plinth

on which Nelson stands

0:37:240:37:27

overhangs the column.

0:37:270:37:28

I was literally hanging from

the ladder with nothing beneath me.

0:37:280:37:32

0:37:320:37:34

-- Once I had reached

the top of the column,

0:37:340:37:37

the worst part began -

0:37:370:37:38

I had to go down again,

in a bosun's chair.

0:37:380:37:41

But you coming down to join me?

0:37:410:37:43

Yes, I'm coming down.

0:37:430:37:44

Do you feel all right?

0:37:440:37:46

Yes, I feel good.

0:37:460:37:51

No Shep, don't bite him!

0:37:510:37:54

Get down Shep, behave, come here.

0:37:540:37:58

Get down Shep, behave, come here.

0:37:580:38:04

I'll cuff you round the ear.

0:38:040:38:13

Wait a minute! I have just jumped

out of this aeroplane at 50,000

0:38:130:38:19

feet. I am upside down! I am upside

down!

Hello and welcome to a special

0:38:190:38:34

bank holiday edition.

0:38:340:38:41

How long did it take

you to record the album?

0:38:410:38:43

Between two and three years.

0:38:430:38:45

Do you have any ideas of

what you would like to swap it for?

0:38:450:38:48

I'm back again.

0:38:480:38:49

14 years at the BBC.

0:38:490:38:51

Swap shop, Cheggers

Plays Pop, all sorts.

0:38:510:38:54

I happened to miss a bus one

Christmas evening and went

0:38:570:39:01

into a London store and saw this toy

bear on the counter.

0:39:010:39:04

Nobody had bought it,

it was the only one left,

0:39:040:39:07

I took it on to my wife.

0:39:070:39:14

We lived near Paddington

so we called it Paddington.

0:39:140:39:16

One day I was sitting with a blank

sheet of paper and a typewriter

0:39:160:39:20

and started to write a story

about it and I became a book.

0:39:200:39:23

Mr and Mrs Brown first met

Paddington on a railway station

0:39:230:39:26

which is how he came to have such

an unusual book for a bear.

0:39:260:39:30

Based on my father, very polite man,

always wore a hat and Paddington has

0:39:300:39:34

a lot of him in him.

0:39:340:39:35

Good afternoon, he said,

can I help you.

0:39:350:39:38

There's Parsley.

0:39:380:39:48

Sometimes Mr Onion

lets him ring the bell.

0:39:480:39:50

London, a lovely city.

0:39:500:39:52

You can go to France or America,

India, Asia, Australia,

0:39:520:39:58

you're going to come

back to London city.

0:39:580:40:06

0:40:100:40:19

0:40:190:40:24

I think there was a sort

of reticence and nervousness

0:40:300:40:33

that the women might

take over all together.

0:40:330:40:37

We might not present an acceptable

face of cricket and I actually cried

0:40:370:40:40

as I walked out onto the pitch.

0:40:400:40:42

It was the most incredible feeling.

0:40:420:40:45

COMMENTATOR: Rachel Flynt,

what a good piece of fielding

0:40:450:40:48

but not good running

between the wickets, though.

0:40:480:40:55

UMPIRE: Advantage, Miss Graf.

0:40:550:41:00

Overcome with the emotion of it all.

0:41:000:41:06

She just told me "Jana,

you will do it, I believe one day

0:41:060:41:09

you will do it."

0:41:090:41:11

She's done it!

0:41:110:41:24

50-1, Blackburn Rovers seven,

Nottingham Forest nil.

0:41:240:41:33

After our last programme,

the editor of Final Score came

0:41:330:41:36

with a box

and when he opened it

0:41:360:41:38

and produced this trophy,

0:41:380:41:40

I thought "That's absolutely made my

day because that is something

0:41:400:41:43

that

I have always thought,

0:41:430:41:44

having watched the sports

personality of the year,

0:41:440:41:47

I would love to have something

like that as a souvenir

0:41:470:41:50

worries me, I'm so happy.

0:44:510:44:55

I keep expecting something

to come along and spoil it.

0:44:550:44:58

Daft thing, what could

possibly do that.

0:44:580:45:07

It happens sometimes in an actor's

life, if you are very very lucky

0:45:080:45:12

0:45:120:45:21

And when I read Last Of The Summer

0:46:590:47:00

Where are you going, Jack?

0:47:100:47:10

I wouldn't have done that,

but it was an emergency.

0:47:100:47:13

0:47:130:47:18

here looking as you do?

0:48:470:48:52

0:48:520:48:54

you'll never work again" and I said,

"It's not about sexuality,

it's about the tenderness

Hello, happy new Year,

this is Breakfast with Roger

1:00:381:00:41

Johnson.

1:00:411:00:41

Huge crowds gather all over

the world to celebrate

1:00:411:00:44

the start of 2018.

1:00:441:00:45

BONG.

1:00:451:00:51

Spectacular fireworks

bring in New Year

1:00:511:00:53

despite warnings about the weather

and travel problems.

1:00:531:00:59

Good morning, it's Monday

the 1st of January.

1:01:131:01:16

Elsewhere in the news this morning:

1:01:161:01:19

Five British people,

including an 11-year-old girl,

1:01:191:01:21

are confirmed to have been killed

when a sea plane crashed

1:01:211:01:24

in Australia yesterday.

1:01:241:01:28

Firefighters have been battling

a blaze in a multi-storey car park

1:01:281:01:31

in Liverpool which has destroyed

up to 1,400 vehicles.

1:01:311:01:37

North Korea's leader

says his country's nuclear weapons

1:01:371:01:39

are a "reality, not a threat"

and the entire US mainland

1:01:391:01:42

is a target.

1:01:421:01:46

In sport, the winning run is over.

1:01:461:01:48

And it takes an injury time penalty

save to preserve Manchester City's

1:01:481:01:51

unbeaten record this season

as they're given a scare

1:01:511:01:53

at the Palace.

1:01:531:01:56

Happy New Year from BBC Breakfast!

1:01:561:02:02

From Parliament Square,

the final preparations are under way

1:02:021:02:05

for the annual New Year's Day parade

with thousands of performers

1:02:051:02:08

from around the world

like these guys on Texas!

1:02:081:02:10

Half a million people expected, 8000

performers, including these guys.

1:02:101:02:18

And Stav has the weather.

1:02:181:02:19

Happy New Year.

1:02:191:02:25

Quite a lot of showers around, wet

and windy in places but some

1:02:251:02:30

sunshine into the afternoon but

actually the start of 2018 is

1:02:301:02:33

looking unsettled. More in 15

minutes.

1:02:331:02:35

Good morning and happy new year.

1:02:351:02:37

First, our main story.

1:02:371:02:38

Millions of people around the world

have been celebrating

1:02:381:02:41

the start of 2018.

1:02:411:02:42

More than 100,000 ticketholders

watched London's midnight firework

1:02:421:02:44

show from the banks

of the River Thames,

1:02:441:02:46

and Hogmanay celebrations

went ahead in Edinburgh,

1:02:461:02:48

despite earlier travel

and weather concerns,

1:02:481:02:50

as Simon Clemison reports.

1:02:501:02:56

It was one party Big Ben

really couldn't miss.

1:02:561:02:59

BONG!

1:02:591:03:00

Chiming for new year,

despite being silenced at the moment

1:03:001:03:03

while repairs are carried out.

1:03:031:03:04

Cue 12,000 fireworks.

1:03:041:03:18

Whatever you did to finish 2017,

whatever you are doing to start

1:03:181:03:21

2018, there are these 11 minutes

and 15 second in the middle

1:03:211:03:25

here in London when you look up

and forget to breathe.

1:03:251:03:29

The soundtrack dominated

by female artists.

1:03:291:03:31

The centenary of women

beginning to get the vote -

1:03:311:03:33

one way this year will be defined.

1:03:331:03:39

Any thoughts about what 2018

might hold for you?

1:03:391:03:43

Yeah, it's gonna be

the best year ever!

1:03:431:03:47

Why is that?

1:03:471:03:49

Just A levels, we're

gonna get our careers.

1:03:491:03:51

We're gonna get into university!

1:03:511:03:53

To university!

1:03:531:03:53

Gonna be good.

1:03:531:03:54

Do you want to get my kilt?

1:03:541:03:56

Yeah!

1:03:561:04:02

In Scotland, Storm Dylan had been

an unwelcome party guest

1:04:021:04:07

during the day but given

the importance of Hogmanay,

1:04:071:04:15

it would take a lot to spoil

the evening celebrations,

1:04:151:04:18

even though winds of more than 70

miles an hour had hit some parts.

1:04:181:04:22

In Sydney, another quiet night,

the Harbour Bridge somewhere

1:04:221:04:24

in this picture.

1:04:241:04:25

Rainbow colours, a tribute

to Australia's legalisation

1:04:251:04:27

of same-sex marriage in 2017.

1:04:271:04:31

As city after city around the world

rang in the new year,

1:04:311:04:34

Hong Kong erupted, Athens glowed,

and Moscow sparkled.

1:04:341:04:41

There are still some

countries to go.

1:04:411:04:43

Now New York has marked the moment,

the last inhabited island,

1:04:431:04:46

American Samoa, will celebrate 25

hours after neighbouring islands

1:04:461:04:48

first began the party.

1:04:481:04:54

The five British citizens who died

when a seaplane crashed

1:04:541:04:57

in Australia on New Year's

Eve has been named.

1:04:571:05:02

The Australian pilot also died

after crashing into a river 30 miles

1:05:021:05:05

north of Sydney.

1:05:051:05:10

Let's go live to our correspondent

Phil Mercer neither scene for us in

1:05:101:05:14

New South Wales this morning. A real

sense of tragedy there to start the

1:05:141:05:18

new year?

1:05:181:05:22

That's right, and investigators say

it could take many months to figure

1:05:221:05:25

out exactly how and why a routine

sightseeing trip did crush into

1:05:251:05:30

idyllic waters to the north of

Sydney. -- crash. The dead have been

1:05:301:05:38

identified as Richard Cousins, 58

years of age, a successful is this

1:05:381:05:42

man, chief executive of the compass

group and was due to retire in

1:05:421:05:48

March, he died alongside his two

sons and also his fiancee who was in

1:05:481:05:52

her late 40s, and she died alongside

her 11-year-old daughter. So a

1:05:521:06:00

terrible end to 2017 and we

understand from the Australian

1:06:001:06:04

police that the wreckage of the

seaplane at Jerusalem Bay near the

1:06:041:06:11

town of Cowan remained submerged in

about 40 feet of water and as we

1:06:111:06:16

say, the investigation could take

many months.

Thank you indeed.

1:06:161:06:21

Scores of people who had travelled

to Liverpool to celebrate

1:06:211:06:24

the New Year have had to spend

the night in a temporary shelter

1:06:241:06:28

after a fire in a multi-storey car

park next to the city's Echo Arena

1:06:281:06:31

destroyed more than 1,000 vehicles.

1:06:311:06:33

Steve Saul reports.

1:06:331:06:39

The fire is thought to have started

in one vehicle on the third floor

1:06:391:06:42

of the car park.

1:06:421:06:44

Emergency services arrived

within minutes, but the flames

1:06:441:06:46

quickly spread to other floors.

1:06:461:06:48

Police say 1,400 cars

have been destroyed.

1:06:481:06:51

Up to 4,000 people are thought

to have been left stranded

1:06:511:06:54

in the city.

1:06:541:06:55

The arena, on the city's

waterfront, was hosting

1:06:551:06:57

the Liverpool

International Horse Show.

1:06:571:06:58

No spectators or animals

have been injured.

1:06:581:07:04

My car.

1:07:041:07:04

All of our belongings in it.

1:07:041:07:06

Everything.

1:07:061:07:06

I came over from Northern Ireland,

and all my stuff -

1:07:061:07:09

like, my suitcase and all my clothes

are in it, all gone.

1:07:091:07:13

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service

say this is one of the biggest fires

1:07:131:07:16

they have ever dealt with,

with crews working under challenging

1:07:161:07:19

conditions from the outside

of the building because of a real

1:07:191:07:22

fear of structural collapse.

1:07:221:07:24

The difficulty that we have

is because this is so deep-seated,

1:07:241:07:27

is to physically be able to get

into - right into the middle

1:07:271:07:31

of the building to put the fire out,

which clearly is the extent

1:07:311:07:34

of which the fire has taken hold

there, we will not be able to do

1:07:341:07:38

that for quite some time,

given the structural stability

1:07:381:07:41

issues with the building as well.

1:07:411:07:48

Liverpool City Council are expected

to help make arrangements to get

1:07:481:07:51

those who have been left

in the city back home later.

1:07:511:07:54

Temporary parking arrangements have

been made so the arena can

1:07:541:07:56

operate as normal.

1:07:561:08:03

The President of Iran

has appealed for calm,

1:08:031:08:05

saying people would have the right

to protest but not to commit acts

1:08:051:08:08

of violence, amid continuing

anti-government protests.

1:08:081:08:10

In his first public comments

since demonstrations

1:08:101:08:12

against the government began

on Thursday, Hassan Rouhani warned

1:08:121:08:14

that violence and public disorder

would not be tolerated.

1:08:141:08:24

TRANSLATION:

The atmosphere

for criticism, protest

1:08:241:08:26

within a legal framework,

is absolutely free but

1:08:261:08:28

the atmosphere for destruction

and unrest is definitely not

1:08:281:08:31

an atmosphere which

people would tolerate.

1:08:311:08:35

The North Korean leader has said

that he has a nuclear button

1:08:351:08:39

on his desk.

1:08:391:08:39

In a defiant New Year message,

Kim Jong-un said the United States

1:08:391:08:43

would now never be able to start

a war with North Korea.

1:08:431:08:53

Earlier I spoke to Sophie Long in

the South Korean capital Seoul.

1:08:531:09:00

I asked if this just be seen

as another in a long line of threats

1:09:001:09:04

against the US?

1:09:041:09:04

Yeah, I think in terms, certainly,

of his message to the United States,

1:09:041:09:08

there was nothing new -

another defiant message saying

1:09:081:09:10

"We have a nuclear capability

that can strike anywhere

1:09:101:09:13

on your mainland".

1:09:131:09:14

He also said "I have a nuclear

button on my desk".

1:09:141:09:17

Does he have the capability

to strike the US mainland in the way

1:09:171:09:20

that he has boasted about?

1:09:201:09:22

The answer to that is we don't know.

1:09:221:09:24

We do know that he carried out

the sixth and most powerful nuclear

1:09:241:09:27

test in September of 2017

and he carried out a test launch

1:09:271:09:30

of an intercontinental ballistic

missile in November,

1:09:301:09:32

which he said could strike

anywhere on the US mainland.

1:09:321:09:35

Whether he has the ability

to miniaturise the nuclear

1:09:351:09:38

capability and put it on a missile

that can reach the United States,

1:09:381:09:41

we don't yet know, although many

people, many analysts think

1:09:411:09:44

that he might not be

far off doing that.

1:09:441:09:46

What was slightly more surprising

was he had a much more consolatory

1:09:461:09:49

tone towards South Korea,

his neighbour but also,

1:09:491:09:52

of course, the United States' ally.

1:09:521:09:54

He said to them that he was open

to dialogue and he may even consider

1:09:541:09:58

sending North Korean athletes

to the Winter Olympics which are due

1:09:581:10:01

to take place in South

Korea in February.

1:10:011:10:06

That's very important

to the government here.

1:10:061:10:08

President Moon has said that

if that were to happen,

1:10:081:10:10

he thinks it could be a turning

point in relations with North Korea.

1:10:101:10:17

Sophie Long speaking to us earlier

from Seoul. The outgoing chairman of

1:10:171:10:21

the police Federation has claimed

that members of the Freemasons are

1:10:211:10:25

blocking reform in policing. Steve

White to represent rank-and-file

1:10:251:10:30

officers in England and Wales met

the comment in an interview with the

1:10:301:10:34

Guardian newspaper. The claim has

been rejected by senior police

1:10:341:10:37

officers and by the masons, who say

they uphold high moral principles

1:10:371:10:41

and values.

1:10:411:10:43

The Archbishop of Canterbury has

paid tribute to emergency workers

1:10:431:10:45

in his New Year's Day message.

1:10:451:10:47

Justin Welby said 2018 could be

defined either by human suffering

1:10:471:10:50

or the compassionate response to it.

1:10:501:10:52

Here's our religion

editor Martin Bashir.

1:10:521:11:03

Special coins marking 100-year

anniversaries of women getting

1:11:031:11:06

the right to vote and the end

of the First World War

1:11:061:11:09

are being released this year.

1:11:091:11:10

The Royal Mint will also introduce

ones celebrating 200 years

1:11:101:11:13

since the publication

of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.

1:11:131:11:16

The two-pound coin,

marking the anniversary

1:11:161:11:18

of the First World War Armistice,

features a quote from Wilfred Owen's

1:11:181:11:21

poem Strange Meeting,

which says "the truth untold,

1:11:211:11:23

the pity of war".

1:11:231:11:28

That's this morning's main stories.

1:11:281:11:33

It is seven AM, good morning and

happy New Year. If you are joining

1:11:331:11:38

us, perhaps watching in Liverpool

this morning where around 1400 cars

1:11:381:11:43

have been destroyed after a fire

broke out in a multistorey car park.

1:11:431:11:46

That is next to the cities echo

arena, it happened last night where

1:11:461:11:51

a horse show was being held.

Mercifully no one was hurt but

1:11:511:11:55

residents in nearby apartments were

evacuated and the fire service

1:11:551:11:58

tackled the blaze, many people left

stranded without their cars. That's

1:11:581:12:02

talked to Paul Conway at the scene

last night, planning to visit the

1:12:021:12:06

horse show at the Echo Arena.

1:12:061:12:10

Good morning and banks are joining

us bright and early. Describe the

1:12:101:12:14

scene if you would reduce or last

night.

We arrived at the Echo Arena

1:12:141:12:20

just after 6pm and everyone was

being turned away, the Fire Brigade

1:12:201:12:25

were already on the scene. It was

just a thought suggested we go along

1:12:251:12:31

and have a drink somewhere and wait

for it to clear. It appeared like it

1:12:311:12:36

was just a normal car fire,

something of nothing, there wasn't

1:12:361:12:39

much smoke at all. So we made our

way out to one of the pubs adjacent

1:12:391:12:47

to the Echo and we thought it was OK

and then we heard that the show was

1:12:471:12:53

cancelled and we couldn't believe

it, there wasn't that much of a

1:12:531:12:57

fire, and then we started to see the

flames coming out the side of the

1:12:571:13:01

car park and obviously the fire

brigade were there, putting a lot of

1:13:011:13:06

water up the side of the building,

but the fire was just getting bigger

1:13:061:13:10

and bigger and bigger. Yeah, it

became apparent that it wasn't going

1:13:101:13:15

to get put out any time soon.

Looking at some of the this while

1:13:151:13:19

you were talking there, Paul, over

1400 cars, virtually every single

1:13:191:13:25

car in the car park, was destroyed.

What were people saying as they

1:13:251:13:29

watched it unfold?

We happened to be

at the bar talking to people while

1:13:291:13:34

we were getting served and one of

the bar man was looking out at it

1:13:341:13:39

and said come on, it isn't that big,

everybody's car who works in this

1:13:391:13:45

building all parks in their Deuk-Hee

the explosions of the petrol tanks

1:13:451:13:50

and the tyres going and it was like

gunfire at one stage.

Astonishing

1:13:501:13:56

pictures while you are talking.

Obviously the horse show was taking

1:13:561:14:02

place, you are involved in the

equestrian world, I suppose Kelly

1:14:021:14:06

know one and no animal was injured

because it is astonishing to look at

1:14:061:14:10

this picture.

As we decided to

leave, we thought it would be a good

1:14:101:14:16

idea to make our wake out of the

area. We went past where the stables

1:14:161:14:22

were and I know that the horses had

been taken out of the main arena,

1:14:221:14:26

the ones who were competing, they

were in the temporary stables but

1:14:261:14:30

what became apparent, all of the

smoke was then blowing from the

1:14:301:14:35

arena into the temporary stabling.

So the horses had to be gotten out

1:14:351:14:39

just in case they became overcome

with the fumes. And everyone was

1:14:391:14:46

mucking in helping get the horses

out of their to the safety of the

1:14:461:14:50

horse boxes which were parked around

the corner.

We are very grateful to

1:14:501:14:55

you for talking to us, you made it

home safely I presume because they

1:14:551:14:59

think you said you parked somewhere

else?

Very lucky that we parked

1:14:591:15:03

somewhere else, if we had gotten

their earlier we would have also had

1:15:031:15:06

been parked in there so very lucky.

Grateful to you for your time, thank

1:15:061:15:11

you, Paul, and happy New Year. 7:15

AM, let's take a look at the weather

1:15:111:15:21

if you are up right and early.

1:15:211:15:24

The Weather Is Not Too Bad. Happy

New Year. It Is Looking Unsettled To

1:15:291:15:36

Start The Fascinating. Windy for a

time. Two areas of low pressure. Wet

1:15:361:15:47

weather to Northern Ireland. This

area of low pressure will batter

1:15:471:15:54

France. A spell of wet and windy

weather to southern counties of

1:15:541:15:57

England in south Wales. Thundery

showers to the south-west. They will

1:15:571:16:03

go east in the next hour or so.

Spells of sunshine in the Midlands

1:16:031:16:09

and north. Breezy. Showers in

Northern Ireland in Scotland. Gale

1:16:091:16:18

force winds through Northern

Ireland. They will go south into

1:16:181:16:23

northern England and North Wales.

Blustery showers. Wintry on the high

1:16:231:16:26

ground. Improving in the south.

Sunshine. A bit cooler. 7- ten.

1:16:261:16:37

Light winds. A chilly night.

Changing in the west. The next area

1:16:371:16:42

of low pressure moving in. We could

see a touch of frost in the north.

1:16:421:16:50

That is Tuesday. Cold and bright in

central and eastern areas. The wet

1:16:501:16:55

and windy weather will go east

through the day. Snow in the

1:16:551:16:58

Pennines and for the Scottish hills.

Behind that, skies brightened up.

1:16:581:17:02

Blustery blustery showers moving in.

Mild in the south. The next area of

1:17:021:17:09

low pressure will be nasty. A spell

of severe gales and heavy rain at

1:17:091:17:15

times. Clearing on Wednesday

morning. Blustery and windy,

1:17:151:17:18

especially in the west. Gales.

Showers in western areas. Sunny

1:17:181:17:23

spells in the east. 8- 10 degrees.

The rest of the week looking

1:17:231:17:29

unsettled. Low pressure bringing

spells of wind and rain. A little

1:17:291:17:34

bit of sunshine in between. That

will continue as we go on

1:17:341:17:38

bit of sunshine in between. That

will continue as we go on towards

1:17:381:17:38

the weekend. Thank you very much. We

will speak to you a little bit later

1:17:381:17:43

on.

1:17:431:17:47

The start of the new year has

many of us reflecting on the past 12

1:17:471:17:51

months and what we want

to differently in the year ahead.

1:17:511:17:54

We've been asking people

in Manchester what they hope

1:17:541:17:56

to achieve in 2018.

1:17:561:17:57

So, why do we set ourselves

resolutions, and how can we make

1:17:571:18:01

sure we stick to them?

1:18:011:18:02

I'm joined now by

psychotherapist, Emma Kenny.

1:18:021:18:04

Thank you for getting up so early on

you use morning. -- on New Year's.

1:18:041:18:09

Why are they so popular?

Many people

make them. Sticking to them is the

1:18:091:18:13

issue. By the 28th of January,

people have given up. That is

1:18:131:18:21

because of the evidence behind why

they give up. It is therapeutic,

1:18:211:18:31

though. Goalsetting is helpful and

means you can recognise your success

1:18:311:18:35

in the past and you can see what you

are attributing success to as you

1:18:351:18:40

move towards things.

Yesterday we

were talking to the mental health

1:18:401:18:45

foundation. They said sometimes you

can put too much pressure on

1:18:451:18:49

yourself.

Absolutely. The big

problem with setting goals is people

1:18:491:18:55

overwhelmed themselves. They will

not say I have this priority to deal

1:18:551:19:00

with. Look at health. You cannot say

I want to be healthier, you cannot,

1:19:001:19:05

because it is too fluffy. So we have

to have one priority area. Once you

1:19:051:19:12

have mastered that, move on.

Did you

have chocolate?

I gave it up last

1:19:121:19:18

year. I just had dark chocolate.

What I did was make it specific. I

1:19:181:19:22

gave it up. It is the same with

going to the gym. If you say I will

1:19:221:19:28

go to the gym, you will not. If you

say I will go outside ten minutes

1:19:281:19:33

every day and then go once a week to

the gym with my friend, you make it

1:19:331:19:38

more specific, and easier to stick

with. Do not say I will lose weight,

1:19:381:19:44

meet a new partner, go travelling,

it will not happen.

Goals are good

1:19:441:19:51

thing?

Yeah.

Do they make you more

successful generally if you are a

1:19:511:19:57

target focused person?

If you look

at research, it is very strong, any

1:19:571:20:07

goalsetting is effective. Basically,

small and measurable and achievable

1:20:071:20:16

realistic goals. People use

different words. So, small,

1:20:161:20:34

measurable, achievable, realistic,

and time-bound. That's SMART. You

1:20:341:20:38

say I will lose £2 by not having big

lunches. -- two pounds.

Have you got

1:20:381:20:54

one this year?

I will walk with my

children one day a week. It does not

1:20:541:20:59

matter which day it is.

Really?

Congratulations! Well done for

1:20:591:21:03

persuading them. It is lovely to see

you. Happy New Year. Some good

1:21:031:21:10

advice on New Year's resolutions.

Perhaps a few of them will be made

1:21:101:21:16

in London.

1:21:161:21:25

Around half a million people

are expected to turn out

1:21:251:21:28

in Central London for the annual

New Year's Day Parade.

1:21:281:21:31

Thousands of performers,

including marching bands,

1:21:311:21:32

cheerleaders, and stunt drivers

are set to entertain the crowds.

1:21:321:21:35

Not content with all

the frivolities last night.

1:21:351:21:37

Breakfast's Graham Satchell

is getting a taste of the action

1:21:371:21:40

for us this morning.

1:21:401:21:41

Happy New Year. You are not alone.

We are not. We are surrounded by

1:21:411:21:45

cheerleaders from various heights of

America. They are rehearsing, going

1:21:451:21:48

through their final paces. It is

called the New Year's Day parade. It

1:21:481:21:51

kicks off a 12 o'clock. This is one

of the cheerleaders. Good morning.

1:21:511:21:55

Where are you from?

The majority of

us are from Texas. Some, Louisiana.

1:21:551:21:59

Have you been to London before?

This

is my first time out of the US.

And

1:21:591:22:06

what do you think what you are

today?

Today is just so exciting.

1:22:061:22:09

The parade is super, like, we are

also pumped and ready for this.

1:22:091:22:16

Happy New Year. Good luck. Happy New

Year. As well as cheerleaders, we

1:22:161:22:22

have many different things. You can

see some stunt riders. They are from

1:22:221:22:33

Stunted Reality. There are two of

them doing things I would not

1:22:331:22:36

recommend doing if you are hung on

New Year's Day. And this person is

1:22:361:22:40

hopefully going to jump over a Jeep!

Good job. He is from Moto Stunt

1:22:401:22:49

International. And now a marching

band from Troy in Ohio. They funded

1:22:491:22:55

their trip today by selling

thousands and thousands of

1:22:551:22:58

doughnuts, believe it or not. I will

chat to the lord mayor of

1:22:581:23:04

Westminster. Good morning.

Good

morning.

This New Year's Day parade

1:23:041:23:09

has been going on for 30 years. Why

did it start?

It is a time of year

1:23:091:23:14

with shops closing and museums and

galleries shutting. It is a great

1:23:141:23:18

way for Westminster to showcase some

of the best things we have to offer.

1:23:181:23:24

What do you think are the highlights

today?

A variety. It is great to

1:23:241:23:29

have American bands from the US. Top

performing bands. Each of them have

1:23:291:23:36

a float. We have inflatables, stunt

drivers, the variety is the

1:23:361:23:40

highlight.

It is really an occasion

for families, I suppose, and people

1:23:401:23:48

who work and who are completely

drunk overnight.

Yet. It is a good

1:23:481:23:52

way to get rid of the early morning

blues.

You are hosting the event

1:23:521:23:58

today. Good luck. Thank you very

much. Happy New Year. The whole

1:23:581:24:02

thing kicks off at 12 o'clock today.

It starts at Green Park, goes

1:24:021:24:11

through Picadilly, and ends up in

Parliament Square. If you are

1:24:111:24:14

feeling hungover and want to get rid

of the cobwebs, you could do worse.

1:24:141:24:18

That is it from us.

Thank you. And

thank you to your guests. It is

1:24:181:24:24

great to see you at such an ungodly

hour.

1:24:241:24:32

It was almost a stunning end to the

year. Crystal Palace came so close

1:24:321:24:38

to ending the unbeaten run of

Manchester City.

1:24:381:24:41

Late penalty drama in both

of yesterday's Premier League games.

1:24:411:24:44

Crystal Palace missed a late one

to snatch a win over leaders

1:24:441:24:47

Manchester City, as their 18 match

unbeaten run came to an end

1:24:471:24:51

yesterday, while West Brom salvaged

a point with a dubious penalty over

1:24:511:24:54

Arsenal.

1:24:541:24:54

Adam Wild rounds up the action.

1:24:541:24:58

Still, it is rather hard to imagine

just how things could get any better

1:24:581:25:00

The message from fans

was clear enough.

1:25:011:25:02

Still, it is rather hard to imagine

just how things could get any better

1:25:021:25:06

for Manchester City.

1:25:061:25:07

Never has a team been so far ahead

at the end of the year.

1:25:071:25:11

To their potential, well,

there seems no end.

1:25:111:25:13

But against Crystal Palace, this

was a new year lacking celebration.

1:25:131:25:16

Gabriel Jesus, injured,

leaving in tears.

1:25:161:25:18

It was his replacement,

Sergio Aguero, who went the closest

1:25:181:25:20

in the first half.

1:25:201:25:21

But this was not the brilliance

from City that all have

1:25:211:25:24

come to fear.

1:25:241:25:25

Victory would have equalled

the European record.

1:25:251:25:27

The target, then, straightforward.

1:25:271:25:28

Hitting it, seemingly less so.

1:25:281:25:30

But Palace are a side

with aims of their own.

1:25:301:25:32

They did have chances

with which they should

1:25:321:25:34

have done better.

1:25:341:25:35

Everyone seemed to know it.

1:25:351:25:37

And that, ultimately, for them,

is how this will be remembered.

1:25:371:25:40

In the 90th minute,

awarded a penalty.

1:25:401:25:42

Luca, though, unable to see

the year out with a bang.

1:25:421:25:45

So, not quite the perfect end

to 2017 for either side.

1:25:451:25:48

For both, New Year's Eve,

as is so often the case,

1:25:481:25:50

a bit of an anticlimax.

1:25:501:25:52

Elsewhere, a big day on the calendar

of a rather different sort.

1:25:521:25:55

At West Brom, Arsene Wenger took

charge of Arsenal for the 811th

1:25:551:25:58

Premier League game, a new record.

1:25:581:26:00

But there was much work to be done

before any celebrations would be

1:26:001:26:04

allowed to start.

1:26:041:26:04

His team certainly made him wait.

1:26:041:26:06

It wasn't until the second half

before they found a way through.

1:26:061:26:17

And even then it took

a bit of fortune.

1:26:171:26:19

Alexis Sanchez' free

kick, deflected.

1:26:191:26:21

But that was still far

from the end of it.

1:26:211:26:23

Two minutes remaining,

West Brom were offered a hand

1:26:231:26:26

back into it.

1:26:261:26:27

This, deemed a penalty.

1:26:271:26:28

And Jay Rodriguez gladly spoiled

Arsene Wenger's special day.

1:26:281:26:30

1-1.

1:26:301:26:42

A year laden with controversy

and drama to the very end.

1:26:421:26:54

And plenty more Premier League

action starting off today.

1:26:541:27:01

Exeter Chiefs start the new year ten

points clear at the top

1:27:011:27:04

of the Rugby Union Premiership.

1:27:041:27:05

They beat Leicester 30 points

to six, with four second half tries

1:27:051:27:09

at Sandy Park.

1:27:091:27:09

That's Tiger's sixth

league defeat in a row,

1:27:091:27:11

their worst run in over 50 years.

1:27:111:27:13

Alex Gulrajani reports.

1:27:131:27:14

2017 will go down as

a great year in Exeter.

1:27:141:27:17

Champions for the first time, Devon,

now a must-stop shop

1:27:171:27:27

for the England head coach.

1:27:271:27:28

And with the Chiefs clear

at the top of the table,

1:27:281:27:31

2018 could be memorable as well.

1:27:311:27:33

The only points early

against Leicester from the boot.

1:27:331:27:35

The hands were making

far too many errors.

1:27:351:27:37

Chances missed.

1:27:371:27:38

And they were keeping in touch

thanks to George Ford.

1:27:381:27:44

It took root strength to put

the league leaders in charge.

1:27:441:27:47

Don carried them over.

1:27:471:27:48

And now, a gap emerged

between the sides.

1:27:481:27:50

Exeter certainly needed no help,

yet Jonny May was in a giving mood.

1:27:501:27:54

Straight into the arms

of Henry Slade.

1:27:541:27:56

The simplest of finishes.

1:27:561:27:57

And those supporters may well have

stayed on their feet,

1:27:571:28:00

as Johnny Hill went

over not long after.

1:28:001:28:02

And there was still time for more.

1:28:021:28:04

A bonus point-winning try

with the last play of the game.

1:28:041:28:07

Jack, with the perfect

end to a monumental

1:28:071:28:09

year for Exeter.

1:28:091:28:10

BBC News.

1:28:101:28:14

Scarlets won away at Cardiff Blues

14-11 in the Pro-14.

1:28:141:28:17

Cardiff led at half time

but Scarlets fought back soon

1:28:171:28:20

after the break.

1:28:201:28:21

Rhys Patchell's try,

their second of the match,

1:28:211:28:23

sealed the win.

1:28:231:28:23

The victory leaves them

top of Conference B.

1:28:231:28:35

British number one Johanna Konta

starts her season today with a match

1:28:351:28:39

against the American Madison Keys

at the Brisbane International.

1:28:391:28:41

It's her first tournament

with new coach Michael Joyce

1:28:411:28:43

and she says they are looking

forward to starting

1:28:431:28:46

the season together.

1:28:461:29:08

England's cricketers have

arrived in Sydney ahead

1:29:081:29:10

of the Final Ashes Test which begins

in three days' time.

1:29:101:29:13

England head coach, Trevor Bayliss,

says he still has full belief

1:29:131:29:16

in all-rounder, Moeen Ali,

despite his recent run of poor form.

1:29:161:29:19

The 30-year-old has only taken three

wickets and averaged 19 runs

1:29:191:29:22

with the bat this series.

1:29:221:29:23

He is always a guy that

likes to keep playing.

1:29:231:29:26

But...

1:29:261:29:26

I have full confidence

in him going forward,

1:29:261:29:28

to be honest.

1:29:281:29:29

I mean, it was only two months ago

we were talking about him being one

1:29:291:29:33

of the best all-rounders

in the world.

1:29:331:29:35

Now, he reached the milestone,

what was it, 2000 runs

1:29:351:29:38

and 100 wickets.

1:29:381:29:38

He got that quicker

than everyone else.

1:29:381:29:49

So, there we go, just three days

until it starts again. One last

1:29:491:29:53

chance to salvage some pride. Thank

you. Stay with us. Headlines are on

1:29:531:30:00

the way.

1:30:001:30:03

Hello, this is Breakfast

with Roger Johnson.

1:30:181:30:20

Here's a summary of today's main

stories from BBC News.

1:30:201:30:22

Millions of people around the world

have been celebrating the start

1:30:221:30:25

of the new year.

1:30:251:30:29

More than 100,000 ticketholders

watched London's midnight firework

1:30:291:30:31

show from the banks

of the River Thames,

1:30:311:30:35

and Hogmanay celebrations

went ahead in Edinburgh,

1:30:351:30:36

despite earlier travel

and weather concerns.

1:30:361:30:42

New York is one of the latest cities

to toast 2018 with events

1:30:421:30:46

in Times Square.

1:30:461:30:49

Los Angeles and Vancouver have

to wait another two hours before

1:30:491:30:52

the year changes.

1:30:521:30:53

The five British citizens who died

when a seaplane crashed in Australia

1:30:531:30:57

on New Year's Eve have been named.

1:30:571:30:59

Richard Cousins, the chief executive

of the world's biggest catering

1:30:591:31:02

group Compass, died in the crash,

along with his sons

1:31:021:31:04

William and Edward.

1:31:041:31:06

Mr Cousin's fiancee Emma Bowden

and her 11-year-old daughter also

1:31:061:31:09

died, as did the Australian pilot.

1:31:091:31:12

The bodies of the victims

have been recovered.

1:31:121:31:18

Scores of people were left stranded

in Liverpool and forced to spend

1:31:181:31:21

the night in emergency accommodation

after a fire destroyed more

1:31:211:31:23

than 1,000 cars parked close

to the city's arena.

1:31:231:31:26

No-one was hurt, but residents

in nearby apartments were evacuated

1:31:261:31:29

as the fire service tackled

the blaze which it describes as one

1:31:291:31:32

of the worst it had ever dealt with.

1:31:321:31:37

Britain's trains are the oldest

since current records began,

1:31:371:31:40

according to figures

from a transport watchdog.

1:31:401:31:42

Passengers are travelling

in carriages which were typically

1:31:421:31:44

built in the mid 1990s.

1:31:441:31:47

The Office of Rail and Road says

older rolling stock can lead

1:31:471:31:51

to problems with reliability

and poorer performance.

1:31:511:31:52

The Department for Transport says

4,50 new carriages will be

1:31:521:31:55

introduced across Britain by 2024.

-- The Department for Transport says

4,500 new carriages will be

1:32:021:32:05

introduced across Britain by 2024.

1:32:051:32:06

The President of Iran

has appealed for calm,

1:32:061:32:08

saying people would have the right

to protest but not to commit acts

1:32:081:32:12

of violence, amid continuing

anti-government protests.

1:32:121:32:14

In his first public comments

since demonstrations

1:32:141:32:16

against the government began

on Thursday, Hassan Rouhani warned

1:32:161:32:18

that violence and public disorder

would not be tolerated.

1:32:181:32:22

The North Korean leader has said

that he has a nuclear button

1:32:221:32:25

on his desk.

1:32:251:32:26

In a defiant New Year message,

Kim Jong-un says now that

1:32:261:32:29

North Korea had developed

the capability to hit all of the US

1:32:291:32:32

mainland with its nuclear weapons,

Washington would never start a war.

1:32:321:32:36

He added he would not order the use

of weapons unless his country's

1:32:361:32:39

security was threatened.

1:32:391:32:46

The Archbishop of Canterbury has

paid tribute to emergency workers

1:32:461:32:49

in his New Year's Day message.

1:32:491:32:51

Justin Welby reflected

on the challenges faced

1:32:511:32:53

by the emergency services,

including the terror attacks

1:32:531:32:56

in Manchester, Westminster

and London Bridge.

1:32:561:32:58

He said 2018 could be defined

either by human suffering

1:32:581:33:00

or the compassionate response to it.

From the engagement of Prince Harry

and Meghan Markle, to the retirement

1:33:211:33:24

from royal duties of the Duke

of Edinburgh, Sarah Campbell looks

1:33:241:33:27

back on the key events in Review

2017: The Royal Year.

1:33:271:33:29

REPORTER:

Congratulations

from all of us!

1:33:411:33:42

How are you both feeling?

1:33:421:33:54

Um, thrilled.

1:33:541:33:55

This was the year in which Prince

Harry introduced his new leading

1:33:551:33:58

lady, the American

actress, Meghan Markle.

1:33:581:34:00

The fact that I fell in love

with Meghan so incredibly quickly,

1:34:001:34:03

was sort of confirmation

to me that everything,

1:34:031:34:05

all the stars were aligned,

everything was perfect.

1:34:051:34:08

After 70 years of public service,

the Duke of Edinburgh,

1:34:081:34:11

Britain's longest-serving

Royal Consort hung up his hat

1:34:111:34:13

and retired from royal duties.

1:34:131:34:20

Prince George had his

own milestone moment -

1:34:201:34:22

his first day of school.

1:34:221:34:30

And flexing their royal muscles

in an effort to put the issue

1:34:301:34:34

of mental health firmly

on the national agenda.

1:34:341:34:43

After weeks of fevered speculation

came confirmation that Prince Harry,

1:34:431:34:47

the fifth in line to the throne,

was engaged to the American actress,

1:34:471:34:50

Meghan Markle.

1:34:501:34:53

The happy couple appeared

in the grounds of Kensington Palace,

1:34:531:34:56

which will be her new home.

1:34:561:34:58

This was only the second time

they had appeared together

1:34:581:35:01

for the cameras.

1:35:011:35:02

REPORTER:

Harry, when did

you know she was the one?

1:35:021:35:04

The very first time we met!

1:35:041:35:10

Later, in a candid interview

with the BBC's Mishal Husain,

1:35:101:35:12

they revealed they'd met on a blind

date set up by a mutual friend.

1:35:121:35:17

In early November, while preparing

a roast chicken dinner,

1:35:171:35:20

Harry popped the question.

1:35:201:35:22

It was just an amazing surprise.

1:35:221:35:24

It was so sweet and natural

and very romantic.

1:35:241:35:28

He got on one knee.

1:35:281:35:29

Of course.

1:35:291:35:30

Was that an instant yes from you?

1:35:301:35:32

Yes, as a matter of fact, I could

barely let him finish proposing.

1:35:321:35:35

I said, "Can I say yes now?!"

1:35:351:35:37

She didn't even let me finish.

1:35:371:35:39

She said, "Can I say

yes, can I say yes?"

1:35:391:35:42

Then there was hugs and I had

the ring in my finger.

1:35:421:35:45

I was like, "Can I

give you the ring?"

1:35:451:35:47

She was, like, "Oh, yes, the ring!"

1:35:471:35:49

So, no, it was a really nice moment,

just the two of us, and I think

1:35:491:35:54

I managed to catch her

by surprise as well.

1:35:541:35:56

The fact that I fell in love

with Meghan so incredibly quickly

1:35:561:36:00

was sort of confirmation

to me that everything,

1:36:001:36:02

all of the stars were aligned,

everything was just perfect.

1:36:021:36:04

It was this beautiful woman had just

sort of literally tripped and fell

1:36:041:36:08

into my life, I had fell

into her life, and the fact that

1:36:081:36:11

I know that she will be unbelievably

good at the job part of it as well,

1:36:111:36:16

is obviously a huge relief to me

because she will be able to deal

1:36:161:36:20

with everything else

that comes with it.

1:36:201:36:22

In the case of your relationship,

unlike for most people,

1:36:221:36:24

there is this whole layer of what it

means to get involved with someone

1:36:241:36:28

from the Royal Family.

1:36:281:36:29

How much of a sense did you have,

Meghan, of the enormity

1:36:291:36:32

of what you were getting into?

1:36:321:36:34

What it might mean for your life?

1:36:341:36:36

I think I can very safely say,

as naive as it sounds now,

1:36:361:36:39

having gone through this learning

curve in the past year and a half,

1:36:391:36:43

I didn't have any understanding

of just what it would be like.

1:36:431:36:46

I don't think either of us did,

we both said that, even though

1:36:461:36:50

we knew that it would be...

1:36:501:36:52

I tried to warn you as much

as possible but I think both of us

1:36:521:36:56

were totally surprised

by the reaction after the first

1:36:561:36:58

five, six months that we had

to ourselves, of what actually

1:36:581:37:01

happened from then.

1:37:011:37:03

So I think you can have as many

conversations as you want

1:37:031:37:06

and try to prepare as much

as possible but we were totally

1:37:061:37:09

unprepared for what

happened after that.

1:37:091:37:11

The scrutiny?

1:37:111:37:12

Well, all sorts.

1:37:121:37:14

And some of that scrutiny -

and you ended up making a very

1:37:141:37:17

public statement about it -

some of that scrutiny was centred

1:37:171:37:20

around your ethnicity, Meghan,

when you realized that,

1:37:201:37:22

what did you think?

1:37:221:37:24

Of course it is disheartening.

1:37:241:37:28

You know, it is a shame that

that is the climate in this world,

1:37:281:37:31

to focus that much on that,

or that that would be discriminatory

1:37:311:37:35

in that sense, but I think,

at the end of the day,

1:37:351:37:38

I am really just proud of who I am

and where I come from and we have

1:37:381:37:43

never put any focus on that,

we have just focused

1:37:431:37:45

on who we are as a couple.

1:37:451:37:49

It is an immense change,

you are getting a new country out

1:37:491:37:52

of it, a husband, obviously,

but also giving up your career.

1:37:521:37:58

Sounds nice, doesn't it?

1:37:581:37:59

Yes, it does sound nice.

1:37:591:38:00

But I don't see it as giving

anything up, I just see it

1:38:001:38:04

as a change.

1:38:041:38:05

It is a new challenge.

1:38:051:38:06

It is a new chapter.

1:38:061:38:08

And also keep in mind, I have been

working on my show seven years.

1:38:081:38:14

So we were very, very fortunate

to be able to have that sort

1:38:141:38:17

of longevity on a series and,

for me, once we hit the 100 episode

1:38:171:38:21

mark, I thought, you know what?

1:38:211:38:23

I have ticked this box and I feel

very proud of the work I have done

1:38:231:38:27

there and now it is time,

as you said, work as a team

1:38:271:38:31

with you?

1:38:311:38:33

And Meghan, your parents,

do you think while very happy

1:38:331:38:36

for you, obviously, do you think

they have worried about the scale

1:38:361:38:39

of what you're getting into?

1:38:391:38:42

Well, I'm sure at the onset,

both my parents and my close

1:38:421:38:45

friends were concerned

because we got very quickly swept up

1:38:451:38:48

in a media storm that was not part

of my life before that but they also

1:38:481:38:52

had never seen me so happy.

1:38:521:38:59

And once my friends were able

to really meet Harry and my mum,

1:38:591:39:02

who we spent a lot of time with,

it was so much fun.

1:39:021:39:08

Your mum is amazing.

1:39:081:39:10

It was just obvious that,

no matter what we were being put

1:39:101:39:15

through, that it was just temporary

and that we were going to be able

1:39:151:39:19

to get through that

so everybody was really happy.

1:39:191:39:23

He's talked to my dad a few times,

he has not been able to meet him

1:39:231:39:27

just yet, but it has

all been worth every effort.

1:39:271:39:31

Have you met the Queen?

1:39:311:39:32

I have, yes.

1:39:321:39:33

A couple of times.

1:39:331:39:34

What was that like?

1:39:341:39:35

It is incredible.

1:39:351:39:39

To be able to meet through his lens,

not just with his honour and respect

1:39:391:39:43

for her as the monarch,

but the love that he has

1:39:431:39:46

for her as his grandmother.

1:39:461:39:50

All of those layers have been

so important for me,

1:39:501:39:53

when I met her I had such

a deep understanding and,

1:39:531:39:56

of course, incredible

respect for being able

1:39:561:39:58

to have the time with her.

1:39:581:40:01

She is an incredible woman.

1:40:011:40:04

And the corgis took

to you straightaway!

1:40:041:40:07

That's true.

1:40:071:40:07

For the last 33 years

I have been barked at!

1:40:071:40:10

This one walks in and just

absolutely nothing.

1:40:101:40:12

Just laying on my feet

during tea, it was very sweet.

1:40:121:40:15

Your ring, tell us about your ring.

1:40:151:40:19

The ring is obviously yellow gold

because that is her favourite.

1:40:191:40:25

And the main stone itself I sourced

from Botswana and the little

1:40:251:40:28

diamonds either side

are from my mother's jewellery

1:40:281:40:32

collection to make sure

she is with us on this

1:40:321:40:34

crazy journey together.

1:40:341:40:37

It is beautiful, and he designed it.

1:40:371:40:40

It is incredible.

1:40:401:40:42

Yeah.

1:40:421:40:43

Make sure it stays on that finger!

1:40:431:40:46

Of course!

1:40:461:40:48

What does it mean to you to have

those stones on your finger,

1:40:481:40:51

that once belonged

to Princess Diana?

1:40:511:40:54

I think everything about Harry's

thoughtfulness and the inclusion

1:40:541:40:59

of that and obviously not

being able to meet his Mom,

1:40:591:41:05

it is so important for me to know

that she is a part of this with us.

1:41:051:41:10

What do you think your mother

would have thought of Meghan

1:41:101:41:13

or said about Meghan?

1:41:131:41:14

They would have been as thick

as thieves, without question.

1:41:141:41:18

She would be over the moon,

jumping up and down,

1:41:181:41:21

so excited for me.

1:41:211:41:23

She would have probably been best

friends with Meghan.

1:41:231:41:28

It is days like today that I really

miss having her around

1:41:281:41:34

and being able to share the happy

news but with the ring

1:41:341:41:37

and with everything else

going on, I'm sure she's...

1:41:371:41:40

She's with us.

1:41:401:41:40

I am sure she is with us, yeah,

jumping up and down somewhere else.

1:41:401:41:47

Meghan's soon-to-be in-laws

could not have been happier.

1:41:471:41:49

REPORTER:

Congratulations, sir.

1:41:491:41:50

What do you think

about the engagement?

1:41:501:41:52

Very kind.

1:41:521:41:52

We are thrilled, thank you very

much, for both of them.

1:41:521:41:55

I hope they'll be very happy indeed.

1:41:551:41:57

That is all I can say.

1:41:571:41:59

Absolutely thrilled,

it is brilliant.

1:41:591:42:00

As I said, America's

loss is our gain.

1:42:001:42:04

For me personally, I hope it means

he stays out of my fridge!

1:42:041:42:08

Stop him scrounging off of my food

as he's done in the last few years!

1:42:081:42:12

Deeply excited.

1:42:121:42:13

Despite freezing temperatures,

the people of Nottingham gave them

1:42:131:42:15

a very warm welcome.

1:42:151:42:21

This was Meghan's first royal

walkabout and she handled

1:42:211:42:24

it with aplomb.

1:42:241:42:25

She seems really full of life

and down to earth as well.

1:42:251:42:31

My gosh, actually, I think

she is wonderful, I watched

1:42:311:42:34

interviews and everything,

I think she is great.

1:42:341:42:38

Meghan has committed to the UK.

1:42:381:42:40

She will apply for British

citizenship and has left Suits,

1:42:401:42:42

the TV show which made her famous.

1:42:421:42:45

Thank you so much.

1:42:451:42:48

Congratulations!

1:42:481:42:52

Royal fans have until May

to get their flags and hats ready

1:42:521:42:55

for the couple's wedding

at Windsor Castle.

1:42:551:42:59

A very cold day here in Nottingham

does seem a world away

1:42:591:43:02

from Los Angeles and the acting

world but this is what Meghan Markle

1:43:021:43:06

is now signed up to.

1:43:061:43:09

She will be meeting the public

across the UK and the Commonwealth,

1:43:091:43:12

she has become a key

member of Team Windsor,

1:43:121:43:14

in the same year as another

key member has finally

1:43:141:43:17

announced his retirement.

1:43:171:43:24

For seven decades, this

is an image to which the public

1:43:241:43:27

has become accustomed.

1:43:271:43:28

The Queen accompanied by Britain's

longest-serving consort,

1:43:281:43:31

Prince Philip, together with him

a couple of steps behind.

1:43:311:43:36

This was a significant day

as the announcement had just been

1:43:361:43:39

made that he was to retire

from public duties.

1:43:391:43:44

He was in customary good humour,

chatting to the members of the Order

1:43:441:43:47

of Merit, swapping stories

about hearing aids...

1:43:471:43:49

We have all got them!

1:43:491:43:50

..and joking about retirement.

1:43:501:43:58

"Standing down, I can't stand up

much longer," he replied.

1:43:581:44:05

The Duke's decision was not

health-related but, at 96,

1:44:051:44:08

he felt he had done his bit.

1:44:081:44:11

As he had remarked

the previous day...

1:44:111:44:13

You are seeing the world's most

experienced plaque unveiler.

1:44:131:44:17

LAUGHTER.

1:44:171:44:19

It was a surprise but not

really a surprise.

1:44:191:44:22

Although having for many

years heard it is a job

1:44:221:44:24

from which you cannot retire.

1:44:241:44:28

He has just proved that actually it

might be possible to retire,

1:44:281:44:31

which is quite good

for the rest of us.

1:44:311:44:33

Whenever he's been,

wherever in the world,

1:44:331:44:35

people will continue to remember him

and will continue to remember him,

1:44:351:44:39

and you can't really get

a better accolade than that.

1:44:391:44:41

Over the years, the Duke

has completed more than

1:44:411:44:44

22,000 solo engagements.

1:44:441:44:48

Encouraged millions of young people

in more than 60 countries

1:44:481:44:50

to challenge themselves through

the Duke of Edinburgh's awards.

1:44:501:44:54

Where did you do your expedition?

1:44:541:44:56

I did it in the north...

1:44:561:44:57

Did you get lost?

1:44:571:44:59

A bit.

1:44:591:45:02

ARCHIVE:

And he had time to discuss

And been an early advocate

of environmental issues

1:45:061:45:09

through his Presidency

of the World Wildlife Fund.

1:45:091:45:12

But it'll be his unwavering support

for the Queen in this,

1:45:121:45:15

the year of their platinum

wedding anniversary,

1:45:151:45:17

which will be seen as his

greatest achievement.

1:45:171:45:25

They were married in 1947.

1:45:341:45:35

In the gloom of post-war Britain,

their wedding was described

1:45:351:45:38

by Sir Winston Churchill

as a flash of colour.

1:45:381:45:40

She, the future Queen,

and he the dashing Naval officer.

1:45:401:45:43

In the years since he has travelled

the world with her and been her

1:45:431:45:47

companion both in

public and private.

1:45:471:45:48

In June it was illness rather

than retirement which prevented

1:45:481:45:51

the Duke from being at the Queen's

side at the State Opening of

1:45:511:45:55

Parliament.

1:45:551:46:07

Prince Charles took his place.

1:46:071:46:08

But going forward, this

will become the norm and,

1:46:081:46:10

although the palace has been keen

to emphasise that for the Queen

1:46:101:46:14

it is still business as usual,

the gradual transition of roles

1:46:141:46:17

and responsibilities from one

generation to the next has

1:46:171:46:19

noticeably accelerated this year.

1:46:191:46:22

LAST POST SOUNDS.

1:46:221:46:23

Most significantly in November.

1:46:231:46:24

For the first time in her 65-year

reign, the Queen was present

1:46:241:46:27

at the service of Remembrance

at the Cenotaph, in London,

1:46:271:46:30

but she did not lay a wreath.

1:46:301:46:49

Instead, she watched

from the Foreign Office balcony,

1:46:491:46:51

alongside her husband,

as her son and heir laid a wreath

1:46:511:46:54

on her behalf.

1:46:541:46:55

The Duke will continue to support

the Queen at events of his choosing.

1:46:551:46:58

GOD SAVE THE QUEEN PLAYS.

1:46:581:47:00

But this was his final

official public engagement.

1:47:001:47:02

Fittingly for a former Royal Navy

officer, it was a parade

1:47:021:47:05

for the Royal Marines in front

of the palace which has

1:47:051:47:08

been his London home

for so many decades.

1:47:081:47:10

ROYAL MARINES:

Hip hip hooray!

1:47:101:47:11

Hip hip hooray!

1:47:111:47:12

Hip hip hooray!

1:47:121:47:13

The band's rousing send-off

could not have been more

1:47:131:47:15

appropriate.

1:47:151:47:21

BAND PLAYS FOR HE'S

A JOLLY GOOD FELLOW.

1:47:211:47:33

The UK's exit from the EU edges ever

closer and new relationships need

1:47:331:47:36

to be formed in Europe

and beyond and as this year has

1:47:361:47:40

shown, the Royal Family is uniquely

placed to carry out soft diplomacy,

1:47:401:47:43

spreading a little Stardust

while reinforcing those

1:47:431:47:58

old bonds of friendship.

1:47:581:47:59

APPLAUSE.

1:47:591:47:59

In the United Kingdom,

Irish people make such

1:47:591:48:17

an extraordinary and essential

contribution to so many parts

1:48:171:48:20

of our society and our economy.

1:48:201:48:22

Polish is a second most

spoken language in the UK,

1:48:221:48:24

with the generation of young people

growing up who feel both

1:48:241:48:27

British and Polish.

1:48:271:48:48

APPLAUSE.

1:49:041:49:08

September, and some

high-profile bilateral meetings

1:49:081:49:10

for

Prince Harry in Canada.

1:49:101:49:23

But this trip was not at the behest

of the Foreign Office.

1:49:231:49:26

He was there to help

make his brainchild,

1:49:261:49:28

the Invictus Games,

the biggest and best yet.

1:49:281:49:30

For eight days, more

than 500 athletes from 17

1:49:301:49:33

countries took part.

1:49:331:49:39

All of them had been damaged either

physically or mentally in the course

1:49:391:49:43

of serving their countries.

1:49:431:49:43

The Invictus Games where

Harry's idea to help them

1:49:431:49:46

on their road to recovery.

1:49:461:49:47

Right now, you are on a high,

at the summit of a mountain

1:49:471:49:51

many of you thought

was too high to climb.

1:49:511:49:53

You have done it, this

is the moment, right here,

1:49:531:49:56

right now, shoulder

to shoulder, you are

1:49:561:49:58

Invictus!

1:49:581:49:58

APPLAUSE.

1:49:581:50:03

The Sydney games will take place

in October in what is shaping up

1:50:031:50:06

to be a busy 2018 for Prince Harry.

1:50:061:50:08

Tonight on Panorama...

1:50:081:50:09

The offshore secrets of the rich

and powerful alt in the open.

1:50:091:50:21

In the year in which Royal headlines

were overwhelmingly positive,

1:50:211:50:24

early November was

an early exception.

1:50:241:50:25

The Queen and Prince Charles

were drawn into a global media story

1:50:251:50:29

looking into offshore

investment funds.

1:50:291:50:30

A leak of millions of documents

revealed that the Duchy

1:50:301:50:36

of Lancaster, the Queen's private

estate, had invested £10 million

1:50:361:50:39

in funds based in Bermuda

and the Cayman Islands.

1:50:391:50:41

Not illegal but questions were asked

as to whether this should be held

1:50:411:50:45

the monarch's cash

should be invested.

1:50:451:50:47

As Prince Charles toured

the Far East, the same questions

1:50:471:50:49

will be asked of his private estate,

the Duchy of Cornwall,

1:50:491:50:52

as well as investing offshore,

the Prince was also accused

1:50:521:51:01

of a conflict of interest in

relation to a particular investment.

1:51:011:51:04

Clarence House was robust

in their denial of any wrongdoing.

1:51:041:51:06

The fact that both the Queen

and the Prince of Wales voluntarily

1:51:061:51:10

pay tax on income from the private

estates did not stop calls

1:51:101:51:13

for greater transparency

in the Royal finances in the wake

1:51:131:51:16

of these revelations.

1:51:161:51:16

In times of tragedy,

it is the role of the monarch

1:51:161:51:19

to help console and unite

the nation and sadly,

1:51:191:51:22

this year, the Queen and other

members of the Royal Family have

1:51:221:51:25

been called upon to perform

this duty all too often.

1:51:251:51:28

Starting here in Westminster

in March, when five

1:51:281:51:30

people were killed.

1:51:301:51:31

Two days after the terror attack,

Prince Charles met some of the staff

1:51:311:51:34

at Kings College Hospital,

one of several places

1:51:341:51:41

the injured were treated.

1:51:411:51:42

Westminster Abbey and the Duke

and Duchess of Cambridge

1:51:421:51:44

and Prince Harry joined members

of the emergency services

1:51:441:51:56

and relatives of those

who were killed.

1:51:561:51:58

The message from the service was one

of hope, but that proved

1:51:581:52:01

to be short lived.

1:52:011:52:02

In Manchester, just a few

weeks later, 22 people,

1:52:021:52:04

including children, were killed

and many more injured as they left

1:52:041:52:07

a concert by the pop

singer Ariana Grande.

1:52:071:52:30

You had enjoyed the concert?

1:52:301:52:31

It was really good.

1:52:311:52:32

I got to meet her

before the concert.

1:52:321:52:35

Did you?

1:52:351:52:35

She won a competition

with her friend to meet backstage.

1:52:351:52:48

The Queen met some of those

recovering in the city's Children's

1:52:481:52:51

Hospital.

1:52:511:52:51

Very interesting how

everybody has united here?

1:52:511:52:53

It has been amazing.

1:52:531:53:01

Really amazing.

1:53:011:53:02

Good.

1:53:021:53:02

No one should have to suffer

the losses you have endured yet know

1:53:021:53:06

one could have ensured them

with greater fortitude.

1:53:061:53:08

Even amid the unimaginable

horror of that attack,

1:53:081:53:10

with the killing of innocent

children, we saw outstanding

1:53:101:53:12

examples of the incredible courage.

1:53:121:53:27

Early June and now and

all-too-familiar scenes.

1:53:271:53:29

Prince Charles accompanied

by the Duchess of Cornwall visited

1:53:291:53:31

the Royal London Hospital

in the aftermath of the London

1:53:311:53:39

Bridge attack.

1:53:391:53:40

Later that month, a community

devastated, this time by fire.

1:53:401:53:42

We were evacuated.

1:53:421:53:43

The flames were just unbelievable.

1:53:431:53:57

You have done a brilliant job

in unprecedented circumstances...

1:53:571:53:59

Two days after the Grenfell Tower

burned, the Queen and Prince William

1:53:591:54:03

listen to some of those

who tried to help.

1:54:031:54:05

Six months later, watched by members

of the Royal Family,

1:54:051:54:08

school children who lived

near the tower scattered green

1:54:081:54:10

hearts in memory of those who died.

1:54:101:54:12

This was a National Service

of Remembrance, community and hope

1:54:121:54:16

that a tragedy such as this

would never be repeated.

1:54:161:54:19

Princes William and Harry were just

15 and 12 when their mother,

1:54:191:54:22

Diana, Princess of Wales, died.

1:54:221:54:32

By their own admission,

in the years since they had spoken

1:54:321:54:35

very little about the impact on them

off death but this year,

1:54:351:54:38

20 years on, they decided to open up

about their own trauma

1:54:381:54:42

and their hope was they could start

a national conversation around

1:54:421:54:45

the issue of mental health.

1:54:451:55:01

This was the year William,

Catherine and Harry showed how

1:55:011:55:04

persuasive a campaign force can be.

1:55:041:55:05

The initiative Heads Together

was picked as a London Marathon's

1:55:051:55:08

the charity.

1:55:081:55:13

That high-profile event enabled them

to highlight mental health

1:55:131:55:16

and the stigma which

can surround it.

1:55:161:55:19

It was the common thread,

mental health, it seemed to run

1:55:191:55:22

between military with your self

and addiction with me

1:55:221:55:24

and bereavement, there

was the underlying threat

1:55:241:55:26

of mental health.

1:55:261:55:32

The pressures on children these days

are more than for us,

1:55:321:55:35

you have so many things to worry

about, whether it is struggling

1:55:351:55:38

with exams or home life or friends

and then the social media angle.

1:55:381:55:42

You can understand why that,

coupled with staring at the screen

1:55:421:55:45

the whole time, that a lot of issues

will build from that.

1:55:451:55:54

It is always sold as if everybody

else's life is perfect

1:55:541:55:57

and you think, there must be

something wrong with me.

1:55:571:56:04

If you can have a family environment

where you can talk openly

1:56:041:56:07

about your issues, that means

working better at your job,

1:56:071:56:10

doing better at school,

it goes on and on.

1:56:101:56:12

It was a very personal

campaign for the Princes,

1:56:121:56:15

they took part in a BBC documentary

following a group of people

1:56:151:56:18

with mental health issues

as they trained for the marathon.

1:56:181:56:31

The shock is the biggest

thing and 20 years later,

1:56:311:56:33

I still have shock within me

about my mother, shock cannot last

1:56:331:56:37

that long, people

think, but it does.

1:56:371:56:39

You never get over it,

such a non-believer be big moment

1:56:391:56:42

in your life and it never leaves

you, you just learn to deal with it.

1:56:421:56:46

It can have been no coincidence that

William and Harry chose this year

1:56:461:56:49

to open up about their mother.

1:56:491:56:51

In August, just as had

been the case in 1997,

1:56:511:56:54

the gates guarding Kensington Palace

were strewn with flowers and other

1:56:541:56:57

tributes to Diana,

Princess of Wales.

1:56:571:56:58

A reminder that memory lives

on in the public consciousness.

1:56:581:57:01

Looking at them, it was impossible

not to think back to the young

1:57:011:57:04

princes in the days

following Diana's death in a car

1:57:041:57:07

accident in Paris.

1:57:071:57:08

20 years on, Harry spoke

of the shock they both thought.

1:57:081:57:11

As part of their mental health

campaign, William and Catherine

1:57:111:57:14

appeared on radio one.

1:57:141:57:26

It is Friday the 21st of April,

it is 4pm and this is very Official

1:57:261:57:30

Chart.

1:57:301:57:30

Between now and 5:45pm we will bring

you the big stories,

1:57:301:57:33

new entries and high climbers

and the top ten in full!

1:57:331:57:36

In a very informal interview

with DJ Scott Mills,

1:57:361:57:39

they painted a picture of life

behind the palace walls.

1:57:391:57:41

Are you allowed to order

a takeaway if you want to?

1:57:411:57:45

Absolutely!

1:57:451:57:45

Definitely.

1:57:451:57:48

Pizza, Chinese?

1:57:481:57:49

Curry!

1:57:491:57:50

We are finding it so much!

1:57:501:57:51

What do you watch on

television, if anything?

1:57:511:57:53

The Crown?

1:57:531:57:54

Do you think, it's

not like that at all!

1:57:541:57:56

People have asked me about that,

we are big on box sets,

1:57:561:58:00

once we get time in the evening.

1:58:001:58:02

Once the kiddies are in bed.

1:58:021:58:03

You have to watch all those

children's programmes as well?

1:58:031:58:06

Yes, lots of children's programmes!

1:58:061:58:08

Some of them are really good

but you have to pretend you're

1:58:081:58:11

interested because George gets very

upset if you're not showing due

1:58:111:58:14

diligence to the characters.

1:58:141:58:25

Starting in September,

Prince George would have had less

1:58:251:58:27

time to watch television

as he started school.

1:58:271:58:30

He had to undertake this rite

of passage with only daddy

1:58:301:58:33

for company as his mother

was suffering from severe morning

1:58:331:58:35

sickness.

1:58:351:58:36

He is now a reception pupil

at Thomas' Battersea,

1:58:361:58:38

a mixed fee-paying

school in South London.

1:58:381:58:40

His classmates know him simply

as George Cambridge.

1:58:401:58:42

Looking ahead to 2018,

the Royal Family is set to look

1:58:421:58:45

a little different.

1:58:451:59:04

There will be a new sibling for

Prince George and Princess Charlotte

1:59:041:59:08

and also joining their ranks,

a Californian born actress

1:59:081:59:10

and soon-to-be wife of Prince Harry.

1:59:101:59:15

Good morning, happy New Year, this

is Breakfast with Roger Johnson.

2:00:202:00:24

Huge crowds gather all over

the world to celebrate

2:00:242:00:26

the start of 2018.

2:00:262:00:27

Spectacular fireworks,

performances and the sound

2:00:272:00:28

of Big Ben brought in the New Year -

despite warnings about bad weather

2:00:282:00:32

and travel problems.

2:00:322:00:35

Good morning, it's

Monday 1st January.

2:00:432:00:45

Elsewhere in the news

this morning...

2:00:452:00:48

Five British people,

including an 11-year-old girl,

2:00:482:00:51

are confirmed to have been killed

when a seaplane crashed

2:00:512:00:53

in Australia yesterday.

2:00:532:01:00

Fire-fighters have been battling

a blaze in a multi-storey car park

2:01:002:01:03

in Liverpool which has destroyed up

to 1400 vehicles.

2:01:032:01:06

North Korea's leader

says his country's nuclear

2:01:062:01:08

weapons are a "reality,

not a threat", and the entire US

2:01:082:01:10

mainland is a target.

2:01:102:01:15

In sport, the winning run is over -

and it takes an injury-time penalty

2:01:152:01:18

save to preserve Manchester City's

unbeaten record this

2:01:182:01:20

season, as they're given

a scare at the Palace.

2:01:202:01:28

Happy New Year from BBC Breakfast!

Good morning from Parliament Square,

2:01:282:01:34

final preparations underway for this

year's New Year's Day Parade, half a

2:01:342:01:38

million people expected on the

streets of London and 8000

2:01:382:01:42

performers, including these guys

Texas.

2:01:422:01:47

They will cheer in the New Year for

us.

2:01:472:01:49

And Stav has the weather.

2:01:492:01:52

Happy New Year, today we start with

a lot of showers, wet and windy

2:01:522:01:56

weather in places, we could see some

sunshine into the afternoon at the

2:01:562:02:00

start of 28 team is looking

unsettled for the rest of the week.

2:02:002:02:03

I will have more in about 15

minutes.

2:02:032:02:09

First, our main story.

2:02:092:02:11

Millions of people around

the world have been

2:02:112:02:13

celebrating the start of 2018.

2:02:132:02:15

More than 100,000 ticketholders

watched London's midnight

2:02:152:02:16

firework show from the banks

of the River Thames,

2:02:162:02:18

and Hogmanay celebrations went ahead

in Edinburgh despite earlier travel

2:02:182:02:21

and weather concerns,

as Simon Clemison reports.

2:02:212:02:27

It was one party Big Ben

really couldn't miss.

2:02:272:02:29

BONG!

2:02:292:02:31

Chiming for new year,

despite being silenced at the moment

2:02:312:02:33

while repairs are carried out.

2:02:332:02:35

Cue 12,000 fireworks.

2:02:352:02:45

Whatever you did to finish 2017,

whatever you are doing to start

2:02:462:02:52

2018, there are these 11 minutes

and 15 seconds in the middle

2:02:522:02:55

here in London when you look up

and forget to breathe.

2:02:552:03:02

The soundtrack dominated

by female artists.

2:03:022:03:09

The centenary of women

beginning to get the vote -

2:03:092:03:11

one way this year will be defined.

2:03:112:03:15

Any thoughts about what 2018

might hold for you?

2:03:152:03:21

Yeah, it's going to be

the best year ever!

2:03:212:03:23

Why is that?

2:03:232:03:25

Just A levels, we're

going to get our careers.

2:03:252:03:29

We're going get into university!

2:03:292:03:30

To university!

2:03:302:03:33

Going to be good.

2:03:332:03:35

Do you want to get my kilt?

2:03:352:03:36

Yeah!

2:03:362:03:38

In Scotland, Storm Dylan had been

an unwelcome party guest

2:03:382:03:42

during the day but, given

the importance of Hogmanay,

2:03:422:03:44

it would take a lot to spoil

the evening celebrations,

2:03:442:03:46

even though winds of more than 70

miles an hour had hit some parts.

2:03:462:03:50

In Sydney, another quiet

night, the Harbour Bridge

2:03:502:03:51

somewhere in this picture.

2:03:512:03:53

Rainbow colours, a tribute

to Australia's legalisation

2:03:532:03:55

of same-sex marriage in 2017.

2:03:552:04:01

As city after city around the world

rang in the new year,

2:04:012:04:05

Hong Kong erupted, Athens glowed,

and Moscow sparkled.

2:04:052:04:10

There are still some

countries to go.

2:04:102:04:14

Now New York has marked the moment,

the last inhabited island,

2:04:142:04:17

American Samoa, will celebrate 25

hours after neighbouring islands

2:04:172:04:20

first began the party.

2:04:202:04:26

The five British citizens who died

when a seaplane crashed in Australia

2:04:262:04:29

on New Year's Eve have been named.

2:04:292:04:31

The Australian pilot also died

after crashing into a river 30

2:04:312:04:34

miles north of Sydney.

2:04:342:04:37

Our correspondent Phil Mercer is

near the scene in New South Wales.

2:04:372:04:44

Happy New Year to you, but in many

ways one that begins with tragedy

2:04:442:04:47

there?

That is right, we know that there

2:04:472:04:53

were five British tourists on board

this the plane that crashed just to

2:04:532:04:57

the north of where we are on the

Hawkesbury River near Jerusalem Bay.

2:04:572:05:00

That is close to the town of Taliban

and the picketing is Richard

2:05:002:05:11

Cousins, successful British

businessman, who died alongside his

2:05:112:05:14

two sons. Also among the dead, Mr

Cousins' fiancee Emma bowed and who

2:05:142:05:20

died alongside her 11-year-old

daughter. Investigations are

2:05:202:05:25

continuing and air crash

investigation teams say their work

2:05:252:05:28

may take many months to finally

decide how and why a sightseeing

2:05:282:05:34

flight, a routine flight, ended in

such tragedy. We have also been

2:05:342:05:38

hearing from eyewitnesses, one man

who was on a houseboat nearby, about

2:05:382:05:43

50 metres away, said he dived in

when the played crash -- when the

2:05:432:05:46

plane crashed and try to open the

door but he said the plane sank way

2:05:462:05:50

too for him to retrieve anyone

inside but it is those eyewitness

2:05:502:05:54

accounts that form a crucial part of

this air crash investigation.

2:05:542:06:00

Thank you very much.

2:06:002:06:04

Scores of people who travelled

to Liverpool to celebrate

2:06:042:06:07

the New Year have had to spend

the night in a temporary shelter

2:06:072:06:11

after a fire in a multi-storey car

park next to the city's Echo Arena

2:06:112:06:14

destroyed more than 1,000 vehicles.

2:06:142:06:16

Steve Saul reports.

2:06:162:06:18

The fire is thought to have started

in one vehicle on the third

2:06:182:06:22

floor of the car park.

2:06:222:06:23

Emergency services arrived

within minutes, but the flames

2:06:232:06:25

quickly spread to other floors.

2:06:252:06:27

Police say 1,400 cars

have been destroyed.

2:06:272:06:31

Up to 4,000 people are thought to

have been left stranded in the city.

2:06:312:06:34

The arena, on the city's

waterfront, was hosting

2:06:342:06:36

the Liverpool International Horse

Show.

2:06:362:06:37

No spectators or animals

have been injured.

2:06:372:06:41

My car.

2:06:412:06:45

All our belongings in it.

2:06:452:06:46

Everything.

2:06:462:06:48

I came over from Northern Ireland,

and all my stuff - like,

2:06:482:06:51

my suitcase and all my clothes

are in it, all gone.

2:06:512:06:54

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service

say this is one of the biggest fires

2:06:542:07:04

they have ever dealt with,

with crews working under very

2:07:112:07:14

challenging conditions

from the outside of the building

2:07:142:07:16

because of a real fear

of structural collapse.

2:07:162:07:18

The difficulty that we have

is because this is so deep-seated,

2:07:182:07:20

is to physically be able to get

into, right into the middle

2:07:202:07:23

of the building to put the fire out,

which clearly is the extent

2:07:232:07:26

of which the fire has taken hold

there, we will not be able to do

2:07:262:07:30

that for quite some time,

given the structural stability

2:07:302:07:32

issues with the building as well.

2:07:322:07:33

Liverpool City Council are expected

to help make arrangements to get

2:07:332:07:36

those who have been left in the city

back home later.

2:07:362:07:39

Temporary parking arrangements have

been made so the arena

2:07:392:07:41

can operate as normal.

2:07:412:07:48

The North Korean leader has said he

had in nuclear button on his desk in

2:07:482:07:52

a defiant New Year message. Kim

Jong-un said the United States would

2:07:522:07:58

never be able to start a war with

North Korea.

Our correspondent

2:07:582:08:01

Sophie Long is in the South Korean

capital Seoul this morning. New

2:08:012:08:06

Year, same rhetoric, is this another

threat aimed at the US?

2:08:062:08:11

Well, yes, he did have a clear and

unsurprising message for the United

2:08:112:08:15

States, he called 2017 the year of

accomplishment and said that he had

2:08:152:08:21

the nuclear arsenal capable of

striking anywhere on the US mainland

2:08:212:08:25

and a button to push on his desk.

Does he have the capability that he

2:08:252:08:29

boasts about? Maybe not, but he can

adapt the sixth nuclear test in

2:08:292:08:34

September and test of an

intercontinental ballistic missile

2:08:342:08:37

that he says could reach the United

States in November. He had a more

2:08:372:08:43

conciliatory tone to South Korea, he

said he was open to dialogue and was

2:08:432:08:46

thinking about sending a delegation

to the Winter Olympics which are due

2:08:462:08:52

to take place in South Korea in

February. That will be welcomed by

2:08:522:08:55

the president here, who has offered

in the past two postponed a joint

2:08:552:09:00

military exercises with South Korea

forces and US forces that Kim

2:09:002:09:06

Jong-un sees as provocation, which

could be a good thing for people

2:09:062:09:09

living on the Korean peninsular. It

would at least cause some breathing

2:09:092:09:13

time when they could relax and hope

for some peace and stability and

2:09:132:09:18

de-escalation of the tensions that

have been rising and rising

2:09:182:09:22

throughout 2017. So a multilayered

measured, very defiant to the United

2:09:222:09:28

States but more conciliatory to its

neighbour, South Korea.

2:09:282:09:31

Sophie, thank you very much.

2:09:312:09:36

The President of Iran

has appealed for calm,

2:09:362:09:38

saying people would have the right

to protest, but not to commit acts

2:09:382:09:41

of violence, amid continuing

anti-government protests.

2:09:412:09:42

In his first public comments

since demonstrations

2:09:422:09:48

against the government began

on Thursday, Hassan Rouhani warned

2:09:482:09:50

that violence and public disorder

would not be tolerated.

2:09:502:09:56

TRANSLATION:

The atmosphere

for criticism, protest

2:09:562:10:01

within a legal framework,

is absolutely free, but

2:10:012:10:04

the atmosphere for destruction

and unrest is definitely not

2:10:042:10:06

an atmosphere which

people would tolerate.

2:10:062:10:10

The outgoing chairman of the Police

Federation claims that members of

2:10:102:10:14

the Freemasons are blocking reforms

in policing. Steve White, whose

2:10:142:10:18

organisation represents

rank-and-file officers in England

2:10:182:10:21

and Wales, made the comment in an

interview with the Guardian

2:10:212:10:24

newspaper. The claim was rejected by

senior police officers and the

2:10:242:10:28

Masons, who say they are polled

moral principles and values.

2:10:282:10:32

The Archbishop of Canterbury has

paid tribute to emergency workers

2:10:322:10:35

in his New Year's day message.

2:10:352:10:36

Justin Welby reflected

on the challenges faced

2:10:362:10:38

by the emergency services,

including the terror

2:10:382:10:40

attacks in Manchester,

Westminster and London Bridge.

2:10:402:10:44

He said 2018 could be defined

either by human suffering

2:10:442:10:47

or the compassionate response to it.

2:10:472:10:57

Special coins marking 100-year

anniversaries of women getting

2:10:582:10:59

the right to vote and the end

of the First World War

2:10:592:11:02

are being released this year.

2:11:022:11:04

The Royal Mint will also introduce

ones celebrating 200 years

2:11:042:11:06

since the publication

of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.

2:11:062:11:08

The £2 coin marking the anniversary

of the First World War Armistice

2:11:082:11:14

features a quote from Wilfred Owen's

poem Strange Meeting.

2:11:142:11:20

Those are the main stories, good

morning if you have just joined us,

2:11:202:11:24

surfacing after New Year's Eve

celebrations, very happy New Year to

2:11:242:11:27

you.

2:11:272:11:29

The start of the New Year has

many of us reflecting on the past 12

2:11:292:11:32

months and what we want to do

differently in the year ahead.

2:11:322:11:35

But why do we set ourselves

resolutions, and how can we make

2:11:352:11:38

sure we stick to them?

2:11:382:11:48

We have been finding out what you

think.

2:11:542:11:57

Try and be a little bit healthier.

2:11:572:11:58

Umm, but not a lot different.

2:11:582:12:00

Try to enjoy ourselves.

2:12:002:12:01

To finish my Masters

and get some work.

2:12:012:12:03

To help more people

out if they are hurt

2:12:032:12:05

or anything is wrong.

2:12:052:12:07

Eat less unhealthy food.

2:12:072:12:08

Go on a diet.

2:12:082:12:12

You don't have to go on a diet!

2:12:122:12:15

But I don't really want to.

2:12:152:12:24

Resolutions shouldn't

be done on 1st Jan,

2:12:242:12:26

they should be ongoing

throughout the year.

2:12:262:12:27

Keep maintaining them on to them

for the right reasons.

2:12:272:12:30

I never stick to them.

2:12:302:12:31

Exactly, yeah.

2:12:312:12:32

They are affecting.

2:12:322:12:33

Still, life goes on.

2:12:332:12:34

Why, because it is

a new year, do you...

2:12:342:12:44

It is a great idea,

but if you don't stick to them,

2:12:452:12:55

you feel bad when,

so don't make them!

2:12:582:13:00

I am going to be a better husband,

a better father, and,

2:13:002:13:03

umm, a better person.

2:13:032:13:04

I do a decent job already,

but there is always

2:13:042:13:06

room for improvement.

2:13:062:13:07

So why do we set

ourselves resolutions?

2:13:072:13:09

The Psychotherapist Emma Kenny

is here along with Dave,

2:13:092:13:11

who has big plans for 2018.

2:13:112:13:13

He has survived cancer five times,

he now hopes to inspire others

2:13:132:13:16

and he's here with his son,

Lee, and wife Angela.

2:13:162:13:18

You have a shirt that says, I have

had cancer five times, but I believe

2:13:182:13:24

you have got it again, is that

right?

Yes, a little mark on my

2:13:242:13:30

neck, I need that removing on

Thursday.

Is that six times?

No, it

2:13:302:13:35

has cost me a lot of money to have

this printed! When I had skin cancer

2:13:352:13:40

a few years ago on my cheek, it was

just a little operation like having

2:13:402:13:46

a cyst removed, so if I have this

one, this is the other half, so I am

2:13:462:13:51

still only five times.

It might

sound like we are being flippant,

2:13:512:13:55

which I don't mean to be, but it is

because we were chatting while that

2:13:552:13:58

report was on. Your positivity is

astonishing, is it in place of a New

2:13:582:14:04

Year 's resolution? I bet you don't

make them?

No, you have to be

2:14:042:14:08

positive all the time, you only live

once, enjoy it, enjoy your life,

2:14:082:14:12

inspire people if you can.

What do

you think of your dad?

He is

2:14:122:14:18

incredible, he inspires a lot of

people and it is amazing he has

2:14:182:14:22

survived cancer five times.

He gives

people hope, doesn't he? Other

2:14:222:14:26

people suffering, it gives them the

hope that life does go on and you

2:14:262:14:29

can overcome these things.

When you

see that, Emma, do you not look at

2:14:292:14:34

it and think, if you have got the

positivity that Dave embodies, do

2:14:342:14:39

you need resolutions? Do you need to

set targets?

To some degree he lives

2:14:392:14:44

his resolution every day, positive

mindset, pushing yourself further

2:14:442:14:47

and harder, so to some degree

because of the optimism and

2:14:472:14:51

positivity, that has a huge impact

on healing, I think, so living in

2:14:512:14:55

that manner and with the exercise is

just a complete collaboration of

2:14:552:14:59

success. But as far as the average

person goes...

Mere mortals like the

2:14:592:15:03

rest of us!

Exactly! Goal-setting is

important, so using smart targets

2:15:032:15:10

means you are specific about what

you want to achieve, you know why

2:15:102:15:13

you will achieve it and implement a

plan of how you will do that.

2:15:132:15:17

Explain that

2:15:172:15:21

SMART?

Smart, measurable,

achievable, realistic, don't say you

2:15:302:15:37

will win the lottery because it

might not happen, and time bound, so

2:15:372:15:40

when you will achieve them. I am

sure you are constantly planning

2:15:402:15:44

another marathon...

It is the

Ironman?

If Angie lets me do an

2:15:442:15:50

Ironman, I will try to do one, but

it depends.

You will let him?

I will

2:15:502:15:55

let him!

For some people the idea of

exercise, we all get to the position

2:15:552:16:02

now, we have had too much to eat and

drink over Christmas, my suit is a

2:16:022:16:06

bit tighter than it was and you

think, I need to lose a bit of

2:16:062:16:09

weight, but exercise is a big

turn-off for lots of people but you

2:16:092:16:13

started doing it bit by bit?

Yes, I

built it up. I remember ten years

2:16:132:16:18

ago now, my goal for the year was to

run a half marathon, people claim

2:16:182:16:22

for that, -- people train for that,

it was my 40th birthday and I

2:16:222:16:31

decided, it was only five weeks

before that me and my brother

2:16:312:16:35

decided to run 40 miles on my 40th

birthday, run round all the old

2:16:352:16:40

schools and houses that I lived in

India every, got all the schools

2:16:402:16:45

involved and raised £5,000.

Where

are you from?

Hull.

A great year in

2:16:452:16:52

Hull all-round. Have you had a

resolution, give up chocolate or any

2:16:522:16:57

of the usual things?

It would be

good giving up chocolate but...

But

2:16:572:17:04

you don't need to!

I don't know when

it comes to New Year 's resolutions,

2:17:042:17:09

I guess you just make them anyway.

It is good to set yourself targets

2:17:092:17:14

but also good to doing targets

anyway every day.

And I suppose,

2:17:142:17:19

being married to Dave, anything you

set yourself is comparatively small

2:17:192:17:24

fry!

It is never going to match what

Dave sets, ever! I think it is just

2:17:242:17:30

being healthy, happy, living life to

the full.

One of the brilliant

2:17:302:17:34

things that you did, and anybody who

wants to think about that in

2:17:342:17:38

resolutions, don't overwhelm

yourself with the big picture. As

2:17:382:17:41

you said, it was about starting,

going for a small bug and

2:17:412:17:44

acknowledging that is how you build,

then look, 40 miles, I will just do

2:17:442:17:49

that because it is my 40th birthday!

We have all done that!

For those of

2:17:492:17:55

us getting closer to bigger birthday

is the idea of running that far is

2:17:552:18:00

altogether not possible! It is

lovely to see you, Dave, thank you

2:18:002:18:04

for coming in, we wish you the best

for 2018, anti-EU, Lee, Angela, and

2:18:042:18:09

Emma. I hope that has inspired you

to do whatever resolution takes your

2:18:092:18:14

fancy, perhaps we will wish for good

weather to start 2018, Stav has

2:18:142:18:18

focused, happy Year. Is

2:18:182:18:21

Here's Stav with a look

at this morning's weather.

2:18:212:18:22

Lots of low pressure systems. That's

how it is going to be for New Year's

2:18:292:18:34

Day. We have two areas of low

pressure. This one is going to

2:18:342:18:38

batter parts of France and bring

heavy rain and strong winds through

2:18:382:18:42

the English Channel and southern

counties of England as well. The

2:18:422:18:45

extent of the rain will be around

the M4 corridor. We have a cluster

2:18:452:18:53

of heavy showers. They are going to

move inland. Elsewhere a lot of

2:18:532:18:58

sunshine to start New Year's Day.

For Northern Ireland, into parts of

2:18:582:19:03

Scotland, very windy here. Plenty of

blustery showers and gales for

2:19:032:19:06

Northern Ireland and there will be

snow falling over the higher ground

2:19:062:19:09

of Scotland. This wet and windy

weather pushing on in towards

2:19:092:19:12

northern England and North Wales.

Conditions improve across the south,

2:19:122:19:16

that area of low pressure moves away

and we should see sunshine moving in

2:19:162:19:19

its place. A chillier day than what

we have seen the last few days. The

2:19:192:19:23

area of low pressure clears away.

Then we are in a brief ridge of high

2:19:232:19:27

pressure. It means overnight things

will turn colder and under clear

2:19:272:19:33

skies and with lighter winds.

Temperatures coming up across the

2:19:332:19:37

west, that's because we've got the

next weather system moving in and it

2:19:372:19:40

will bring a belt of wet and windy

weather. Snow falling over the

2:19:402:19:47

higher ground, northern England and

in towards Scotland, but the rain

2:19:472:19:50

will clear and it will leave

blustery showers and turning milder

2:19:502:19:53

across the south. We are concerned

about this next area of low pressure

2:19:532:19:57

which could bring a spell of gales

or severe gales to parts of the UK.

2:19:572:20:01

Keep tuned to the weather forecast

for that, but we think it should

2:20:012:20:05

clear off into the North Sea for

Wednesday leaving a rash of blustery

2:20:052:20:08

showers throughout the day. Some

sunshine in between, but heavy

2:20:082:20:12

showers across the west where it

will be windy with gale force winds.

2:20:122:20:15

You get the picture. It will be very

unsettled for the rest of the week

2:20:152:20:19

ahead. Further areas of low pressure

bringing heavy rain and gales, but

2:20:192:20:23

there will be sunshine in the

forecast as well. Back to you,

2:20:232:20:26

Roger.

Stav, thank you very much

indeed.

2:20:262:20:30

Around 500,0000 people are expected

to turn out in Central London

2:20:322:20:37

for the annual New Year's Day Parade

today with thousands of performers

2:20:372:20:40

set to entertain the crowds.

2:20:402:20:41

Graham Satchell is getting

a taste of the action

2:20:412:20:43

for us this morning.

2:20:432:20:47

Graham, they are still going through

the motions and happy New Year to

2:20:472:20:51

you all.

Good morning, Roger. Happy New Year

2:20:512:20:55

to you. We're in Parliament Square.

These cheerleaders have come all the

2:20:552:21:03

way from the southern state of

America, mainly from Texas. Good

2:21:032:21:09

morning t Chloe.

Good morning.

So

you have done this once before, is

2:21:092:21:12

that right?

Yes, I did this trip

last year too.

What was it like?

2:21:122:21:16

What's the day like?

It was awesome.

It was an amazing trip.

Good luck

2:21:162:21:20

today. Happy New Year to you.

Thank

you. Happy New Year.

We also have

2:21:202:21:26

marching bands. Look at these guys.

Off you go.

2:21:262:21:33

They are from California. An 80

piece marching band.

2:21:332:21:39

They are feeling like they want to

Celebrate this morning at this

2:21:392:21:44

ungodly hour! While you watch the

band I'm going to have a chat with

2:21:442:21:50

Colin and Fiona. Coldge, good

morning to you.

Good morning.

Tell

2:21:502:21:53

me why you're here today?

Happy New

Year to everybody. We're here to

2:21:532:21:58

play with the UFO Silver Band. We're

here to celebrate.

You have been

2:21:582:22:06

working with schoolchildren in and

around Grenfell Tower, is that

2:22:062:22:10

right?

Our truck, we're playing on a

45-foot articulated lorry and our

2:22:102:22:17

truck is decorated in artwork that's

created by children from around

2:22:172:22:22

Grenfell and it is about the

positives of community.

That artwork

2:22:222:22:26

has helped them, do you think?

Well,

they're giving with such generosity

2:22:262:22:31

a really positive message to the

public, to the world.

Colin, you've

2:22:312:22:36

done this many times. What's the day

like?

Well, this is a real

2:22:362:22:41

celebration, but it starts, but get

lined up by Green Park at 10.30am.

2:22:412:22:47

We play, we play, we play and we

carry on to 2pm. And it is a

2:22:472:22:53

fantastic way to start the New Year.

I'm going to have a chat with the

2:22:532:22:57

conductor, Justin. Good morning,

Justin. Tell me about your band.

We

2:22:572:23:10

are from Southern California.

Have

you been to Britain or Europe

2:23:102:23:13

before?

No.

What do you think of

London?

It is great coming to London

2:23:132:23:18

and seeing it. It is different.

It

will be quite a day today. Are you

2:23:182:23:22

looking forward to it? Oh yes, for

sure. Happy New Year.

Thank you.

2:23:222:23:28

Quite a scene here and we are

celebrating, not just with marching

2:23:282:23:33

bands, and cheerleaders, but all

sorts of funny animals who seem to

2:23:332:23:37

be here. So, happy New Year from him

and it's happy New Year from me!

2:23:372:23:42

Happy New Year.

Graham, thank you

very much indeed. Pass on our thanks

2:23:422:23:48

to your guests including the

gorilla! They have been up bright

2:23:482:23:52

and early since before 6am. The

celebrations get under way in London

2:23:522:23:57

later on.

2:23:572:24:01

Not much to celebrate for Manchester

City.

It won't affect the league

2:24:012:24:05

table.

Their winning run is at an

end. Happy New Year, Mike, by the

2:24:052:24:10

way.

I have seen you a couple of

times already. It seemed hours ago

2:24:102:24:15

when you first said happy New Year.

They were lose to losing at Crystal

2:24:152:24:21

Palace who a few weeks ago were

facing relegation worries.

Roy has

2:24:212:24:25

lifted them.

There is talk about

whether Manchester City can go the

2:24:252:24:31

whole season without losing.

2:24:312:24:37

There was late penalty drama in both

of yesterday's Premier League games.

2:24:372:24:40

Crystal Palace missed a late one

to snatch a win over leaders

2:24:402:24:43

Manchester City as their 18 match

winning run, came to an end

2:24:432:24:47

yesterday while West Brom salvaged

a point with a dubious penalty over

2:24:472:24:50

Arsenal.

2:24:502:24:51

Adam Wild rounds up the action.

2:24:512:24:53

The message from fans

was clear enough.

2:24:532:24:57

Still, it is rather hard to imagine

just how things could get any better

2:24:572:25:01

for Manchester City.

2:25:012:25:03

Never has a team been so far ahead

at the end of the year.

2:25:032:25:06

To their potential, well,

there seems no end.

2:25:062:25:09

But against Crystal Palace, this

was a new year lacking celebration.

2:25:092:25:13

Gabriel Jesus, injured,

leaving in tears.

2:25:132:25:15

It was his replacement,

Sergio Aguero, who went

2:25:152:25:17

the closest in the first half.

2:25:172:25:21

But this was not the brilliance from

City that all have come to fear.

2:25:212:25:24

Victory would have equalled

the European record.

2:25:242:25:26

The target, then, straightforward.

2:25:262:25:28

Hitting it, seemingly less so.

2:25:282:25:32

But Palace are a side

with aims of their own.

2:25:322:25:35

They did have chances with

which they should have done better.

2:25:352:25:38

Everyone seemed to know it.

2:25:382:25:39

And that, ultimately, for them,

is how this will be remembered.

2:25:392:25:42

In the 90th minute,

awarded a penalty.

2:25:422:25:48

Luca, though, unable to see

the year out with a bang.

2:25:482:25:53

So, not quite the perfect end

to 2017 for either side.

2:25:532:25:55

For both, New Year's Eve,

as is so often the case,

2:25:552:25:58

a bit of an anticlimax.

2:25:582:26:02

Elsewhere, a big day on the calendar

of a rather different sort.

2:26:022:26:05

At West Brom, Arsene Wenger took

charge of Arsenal for the 811th

2:26:052:26:08

Premier League game,

a new record.

2:26:082:26:11

But there was much work to be done

before any celebrations

2:26:112:26:13

would be allowed to start.

2:26:132:26:15

His team certainly made him wait.

2:26:152:26:19

It wasn't until the second half

before they found a way through.

2:26:192:26:22

And even then it took

a bit of fortune.

2:26:222:26:27

Alexis Sanchez's free

kick, deflected.

2:26:272:26:28

But that was still far

from the end of it.

2:26:282:26:31

Two minutes remaining,

West Brom were offered

2:26:312:26:32

a hand back into it.

2:26:322:26:34

This, deemed a penalty.

2:26:342:26:38

And Jay Rodriguez gladly spoiled

Wenger's special day.

2:26:382:26:40

1-1.

2:26:402:26:45

A year laden with controversy

and drama to the very end.

2:26:452:26:48

Exeter Chiefs start the new year ten

points clear at the top

2:26:502:26:53

of the Rugby Union Premiership.

2:26:532:26:55

They beat Leicester 30-6 with four

second half tries at Sandy Park.

2:26:552:26:58

That's the Tigers sixth

league defeat in a row -

2:26:582:27:01

their worst run in over 50 years.

2:27:012:27:02

Alex Gulra-Jani reports.

2:27:022:27:07

2017 will go down as

a great year in Exeter.

2:27:072:27:11

Champions for the first time, Devon,

now a must-stop shop

2:27:112:27:13

for the England head coach.

2:27:132:27:14

And with the Chiefs clear

at the top of the table,

2:27:142:27:17

2018 could be memorable as well.

2:27:172:27:21

The only points early

against Leicester from the boot.

2:27:212:27:23

The hands were making

far too many errors.

2:27:232:27:25

Chances missed.

2:27:252:27:35

And the visitors were keeping

in touch thanks to George Ford.

2:27:352:27:37

It took root strength to put

the league leaders in charge.

2:27:372:27:40

Don carried them over.

2:27:402:27:41

And now, a gap emerged

between the sides.

2:27:412:27:43

Exeter certainly needed no help,

yet Jonny May was in a giving mood.

2:27:432:27:48

A parry straight into

the arms of Henry Slade.

2:27:482:27:50

The simplest of finishes.

2:27:502:27:51

And those supporters may well have

stayed on their feet,

2:27:512:27:53

as Johnny Hill went over

not long after.

2:27:532:27:55

And there was still time for more.

2:27:552:27:57

A bonus point-winning try

with the last play of the game.

2:27:572:28:02

Jack, with the perfect end

to a monumental year for Exeter.

2:28:022:28:08

Scarlets won away at Cardiff Blues

14-11 in the Pro-14 Cardiff led

2:28:102:28:16

at half time but Scarlets fought

back soon after the break.

2:28:162:28:19

Rhys Patchell's try, their second

of the match, sealed the win.

2:28:192:28:21

The victory leaves them

top of Conference B.

2:28:212:28:23

In the other Pro-14 fixture,

Ospreys beat Dragons 22-9.

2:28:232:28:32

British number one,

Yohanna Konta, has started her

2:28:322:28:42

season with a two

sets to one victory over

2:28:432:28:46

Madison Keys

at the Brisbane International.

2:28:462:28:47

It's her first tournament

with new coach Michael Joyce.

2:28:472:28:49

She lost the first set

to the American 6-4 but broke early

2:28:492:28:52

in the second to take it 6-4

and level the match.

2:28:522:28:55

Keys lost her serve at the start

of the third and Konta

2:28:552:28:58

was untroubled by her opponent

as she strolled through the set 6-3

2:28:582:29:00

to win the first round contest.

2:29:002:29:02

England's cricketers,

have arrived in Sydney

2:29:022:29:03

ahead of the Final Ashes Test

which begins in three days' time.

2:29:032:29:06

The England Head Coach

Trevor Bayliss says

2:29:062:29:09

he still has full belief

in all-rounder, Moeen Ali,

2:29:092:29:12

despite his recent run of poor form.

2:29:122:29:14

He's taken only three wickets

and averaged 19 runs

2:29:142:29:16

with the bat this series.

2:29:162:29:17

He is always a guy that

likes to keep playing.

2:29:172:29:20

But...

2:29:202:29:23

I have got full confidence in him

going forward, to be honest.

2:29:232:29:26

I mean, it was only two months ago

we were talking about him being one

2:29:262:29:29

of the best all-rounders

in the world.

2:29:292:29:33

Now, he reached the milestone, what

was it, 2000 runs and 100 wickets.

2:29:332:29:36

He got that quicker

than everyone else.

2:29:362:29:40

England now go to Sydney having

avoided the whitewash which was

2:29:402:29:44

important, but they can get a win

with the final Test match. Mike,

2:29:442:29:47

thank you. Starting the New Year

battling a cold.

I sound a bit

2:29:472:29:55

husky.

2:29:552:30:00

Stay with us, the

headlines coming up.

2:30:002:30:04

Hello, this is Breakfast

with Roger Johnson.

2:30:202:30:25

Happy New Year, it is exactly

8:30am.

2:30:252:30:29

Here's a summary of this

morning's main news.

2:30:292:30:31

Millions of people around the world

have been celebrating

2:30:312:30:33

the start of the new year.

2:30:332:30:36

More than 100,000 ticketholders

watched London's midnight

2:30:362:30:40

firework show from the banks

of the River Thames, and Hogmanay

2:30:402:30:43

celebrations went ahead in Edinburgh

despite earlier travel

2:30:432:30:45

and weather concerns.

2:30:452:30:46

New York, Los Angles and Vancouver

are some of the latest

2:30:462:30:49

cities to toast 2018.

2:30:492:30:53

The five British citizens who died

when a seaplane crashed in Australia

2:30:532:30:57

on New Year's Eve have been named.

2:30:572:31:01

Richard Cousins, the chief executive

of the world's biggest

2:31:012:31:05

catering group, Compass,

died in the crash along

2:31:052:31:07

with his sons William and Edward.

2:31:072:31:17

Mr Cousin's fiancee, Emma Bowden,

and her 11-year-old daughter also

2:31:172:31:19

died as did the Australian pilot.

2:31:192:31:21

The bodies of the victims

have been recovered.

2:31:212:31:23

The incident is... Talks for itself.

This is people that have come over

2:31:232:31:27

on holiday to visit Australia, they

were in one of the most beautiful

2:31:272:31:31

parts of the world, and for this to

happen to them at a place like that

2:31:312:31:35

is nothing more than just project.

2:31:352:31:37

Scores of people were left stranded

in Liverpool and forced to spend

2:31:372:31:41

the night in emergency accommodation

after a fire destroyed more

2:31:412:31:51

than 1,000 cars parked in a car park

close to the city's Arena.

2:31:522:31:55

No-one was hurt but residents

in nearby apartments were evacuated

2:31:552:31:57

as the fire service tackled

the blaze, which it describes

2:31:572:32:04

as one

of the worst it had ever dealt with.

2:32:042:32:07

Britain's trains are the oldest

since current records began,

2:32:072:32:09

according to figures

from a transport watchdog.

2:32:092:32:11

Passengers are travelling

in carriages which were typically

2:32:112:32:13

built in the mid-1990s.

2:32:132:32:14

The Office of Rail and Road says

older rolling stock can lead

2:32:142:32:17

to problems with reliability

and poorer performance.

2:32:172:32:19

The Department for Transport says

4,500 new carriages will be

2:32:192:32:21

introduced across Britain by 2024.

2:32:212:32:29

There are reports to more people

have been killed in continuing

2:32:292:32:32

anti-government protests in Iran

this morning, it comes after the

2:32:322:32:36

country's president appealed on

national television to appeal for

2:32:362:32:39

calm. Hassan Rouhani said people

would have the right to protest but

2:32:392:32:43

warned of violence and public

disorder would not be tolerated.

2:32:432:32:47

The North Korean leader

has said that he has

2:32:472:32:49

a nuclear button on his desk.

2:32:492:32:53

In a defiant New Year message,

Kim Jong-Un says now that

2:32:532:32:56

North Korea had developed

the capability to hit all of the US

2:32:562:32:59

mainland with its nuclear weapons,

Washington would never start a war.

2:32:592:33:02

He added he would not order the use

of weapons unless his country's

2:33:022:33:05

security was threatened.

2:33:052:33:09

A small passenger plane has crashed

in a tourist area of Costa Rica,

2:33:092:33:12

killing ten Americans

and two local pilots.

2:33:122:33:14

It was travelling to the capital

San Jose from the mountainous region

2:33:142:33:24

of Punta Islita, near

Bejuco, an area popular

2:33:242:33:26

with tourists on the Pacific coast.

2:33:262:33:27

The cause of the crash

is not yet known.

2:33:272:33:29

Local reports say five

of the passengers shared

2:33:292:33:31

the same surname.

2:33:312:33:34

California has become the largest

state in the United States to

2:33:342:33:37

legalise recreational cannabis use.

2:33:372:33:42

Adults aged over 21 will be allowed

to possess up to an ounce

2:33:422:33:45

of the drug and to grow six

marijuana plants at home.

2:33:452:33:47

Californians voted in favour of

legalising cannabis 14 months ago.

2:33:472:33:50

So far, only a dozen shops have

been approved to open.

2:33:502:33:59

Special coins marking 100-year

anniversaries of women getting

2:33:592:34:01

the right to vote and the end

of the First World War

2:34:012:34:05

are being released this year.

2:34:052:34:09

The Royal Mint will also introduce

ones celebrating 200 years

2:34:092:34:11

since the publication

of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.

2:34:112:34:15

The £2 coin marking

the anniversary of the First World

2:34:152:34:18

War Armistice features a quote

from Wilfred Owen's

2:34:182:34:23

poem Strange Meeting.

2:34:232:34:26

Those are the main

stories this morning.

2:34:262:34:31

Thank you for telling us about all

of your new year's resolutions, we

2:34:312:34:34

wish you well in trying to keep

them.

2:34:342:34:36

That's it from Breakfast

for this morning.

2:34:362:34:40

We're back tomorrow from 6am.

2:34:402:34:44

On behalf of all the team, we wish

you a happy and healthy 2018.

2:34:442:34:48

Now on BBC One, it's

time for Click.

2:34:482:34:50

2017, the year of curious cats,

haunting holograms,

2:34:502:34:58

and trigger-happy trackers.

2:34:582:35:08

Hi there.

2:35:272:35:29

It's time to look back

on the year in tech.

2:35:292:35:31

As 2017 fades away, we could tell

you about all the technology

2:35:312:35:34

news that has happened -

the hacking, the launching,

2:35:342:35:38

the automatic driving -

but that would be just like last

2:35:382:35:40

year and, come to think of it,

the year before that.

2:35:402:35:44

So we prefer to share with you some

unforgettable memories from our year

2:35:442:35:50

on Click, as we've travelled far

and wide to bring you some

2:35:502:35:53

extraordinary moments.

2:35:532:35:54

And we start with a personal

highlight for me.

2:35:542:35:58

Back in October we travelled

to Japan and we got rare access

2:35:582:36:01

to see how robots are helping

with the dangerous task of cleaning

2:36:012:36:05

up the Fukushima nuclear power plant

after its meltdown in 2011.

2:36:052:36:09

Scary?

2:36:092:36:11

No.

2:36:112:36:21

I've worn plenty of

protective suits in my time,

2:36:342:36:40

but they've always been to protect

the environment from my body.

2:36:402:36:44

This time it is different.

2:36:442:36:53

We're going inside unit

five, which is identical

2:36:562:37:03

to the units which were

wracked by the explosions.

2:37:032:37:06

As you can imagine, it is really

hot inside this suit.

2:37:062:37:10

It's a confusing jumble

of walkways and machinery,

2:37:102:37:20

and it's difficult to appreciate

that somewhere in here

2:37:272:37:30

is a seven-storey high tank of water

called the primary containment

2:37:302:37:32

vessel, the PCV.

2:37:322:37:33

And now it's time to go right

underneath the reactor.

2:37:332:37:36

Oh, wow.

2:37:362:37:37

They think what happened

after the meltdowns

2:37:372:37:38

is that the molten fuel just burned

through the bottom of the PCV

2:37:382:37:42

and came through here to what's

known as the pedestal.

2:37:422:37:44

That's where they think

the fuel is now.

2:37:442:37:49

It's difficult enough getting

around this place on foot.

2:37:492:37:53

Now imagine trying to remote control

a robot through this

2:37:532:37:56

after the whole place has been

mangled by an explosion.

2:37:562:37:58

Oh yes, and do it in the dark.

2:37:582:38:02

This is Scorpion, its mission

was to hunt for fuel in unit two.

2:38:022:38:05

Time is of the essence

for any Fukushima robot.

2:38:052:38:10

The radiation will eventually damage

and disable its cameras,

2:38:102:38:12

rendering it useless.

2:38:122:38:17

But the entire mission can also be

upset by something far more basic.

2:38:172:38:22

This is service hatch X6,

and in unit two they were hoping

2:38:222:38:26

to send a Scorpion robot down this

ramp to film the molten

2:38:262:38:29

fuel at the bottom.

2:38:292:38:38

But it got caught halfway down

so it never made it,

2:38:382:38:43

and they didn't get any footage

or evidence of where the fuel was.

2:38:432:38:46

In unit three the water's much

higher, so they had to think

2:38:462:38:49

of another way to get a robot in.

2:38:492:38:51

That's where the mini

sunfish came in.

2:38:512:38:52

Well, actually, that's

where the mini sunfish came in.

2:38:522:38:55

Built to fit through this 15

centimetre pipe, mini sunfish

2:38:552:38:58

is a tiny underwater robot with five

propellers, two cameras,

2:38:582:39:01

and four human operators.

2:39:012:39:11

300 kilometres away from Fukushima,

in Toshiba's Yokohama R&D centre,

2:39:122:39:17

I came face-to-face with the star

of the investigation.

2:39:172:39:28

In July this year, mini sunfish

was successful in finding melted

2:39:312:39:33

clumps of material that could be

fuel debris in the

2:39:332:39:36

pedestal in unit three.

2:39:362:39:37

Decommissioning the site

could take 40 years and it may

2:39:372:39:39

cost 8 trillion yen.

2:39:392:39:40

Those little robots have a lot

riding on their tiny backs.

2:39:402:39:47

Ever wondered what cats get up

to when no-one's there?

2:39:542:40:03

Meet Roxie and Zara,

who seemed agreeable in taking part

2:40:032:40:05

in some gadget testing.

2:40:052:40:08

Oh, sorry.

2:40:082:40:16

If you've ever wanted to watch,

talk to, or even play with your cats

2:40:162:40:19

when you're not with them,

then this could help.

2:40:192:40:25

Once the device is connected

to your home wi-fi, you can log

2:40:252:40:28

in via the app anywhere you can

get your phone online.

2:40:282:40:31

There's a laser game to play,

snacks at the tap of an icon,

2:40:312:40:34

and a function to proudly make

and share videos and cat snaps.

2:40:342:40:44

This rather unusual-looking setup

works in quite a similar way.

2:40:452:40:52

There's a camera so that you can

see the cats remotely,

2:40:522:40:55

also the ability to give them food

wherever you are.

2:40:552:40:57

Plus this toy, which is apparently

something that cats

2:40:572:40:59

might like to play with.

2:40:592:41:04

Zara and Roxie were possibly

slightly intimidated by the jolting

2:41:042:41:09

of the feathery thing,

and the app was extremely

2:41:092:41:12

temperamental, making set-up

a rather tedious experience.

2:41:122:41:22

The PetPace Smart Collar has been

around a little while now

2:41:222:41:24

and is available for cats and dogs.

2:41:242:41:26

It allows owners to keep

an eye on temperature,

2:41:262:41:28

pulse, breathing rate,

heartrate variability, and even

2:41:282:41:38

the positions the pet is in, so it

could be particularly beneficial

2:41:412:41:44

if there are health concerns

or an injury to keep an eye on.

2:41:442:41:50

Meanwhile, there seems to be a game

of cat-and-mouse going on here,

2:41:502:41:53

the latter played by

a remote-controlled rodent.

2:41:532:41:55

Although it actually consists

of the mouse chasing the cat,

2:41:552:41:58

which probably says it

all about my day's filming.

2:41:582:42:00

That was Lara with some pretty

disinterested interviewees.

2:42:002:42:02

You can't win them all.

2:42:022:42:12

You know us, we'll report

from wherever we find a good story,

2:42:122:42:21

and there have been

so many great ones,

2:42:212:42:23

so many successful ones

in Africa this year.

2:42:232:42:25

Back in June, Dan Simmons went

to Tanzania to see the first stages

2:42:252:42:28

of what could be a global

revolution in education.

2:42:282:42:35

We're travelling a long way from any

town or city to visit some

2:42:352:42:39

of the 200 children in Tata village

in northern Tanzania.

2:42:392:42:44

We are booting up the

tablet, the first one.

2:42:442:42:50

The whole programme

is in Swahili so the local

2:42:502:42:52

children can understand.

2:42:522:42:57

I think they're going

to need more tablets!

2:42:572:43:06

Tata is one of about 150 villages

in Tanzania chosen as the testbed

2:43:062:43:09

for the Global Learning XPRIZ.

2:43:092:43:15

Within a few months,

4,000 tablets will be given out.

2:43:152:43:21

The challenge - to teach 7

to 11-year-olds to read, write,

2:43:212:43:24

and do maths over the next year.

2:43:242:43:25

The most effective app

will win $10 million.

2:43:252:43:28

The prize here, though,

will be much more valuable.

2:43:282:43:31

Older children can walk up to four

hours to get to and from school,

2:43:312:43:39

for younger ones like seven-year-old

Amina that is simply too far.

2:43:392:43:42

She has been lucky, she is one

of those who has been chosen to take

2:43:422:43:46

part in the XPRIZ challenge.

2:43:462:43:49

At the start she has not seen

a tablet before so she is not used

2:43:492:43:52

to touching screens.

2:43:522:43:53

When it comes to reading,

she does not know more than one

2:43:532:43:56

or two words in a sentence.

2:43:562:43:57

But John, who was with the project,

thinks the tablet will help her

2:43:572:44:00

eventually to read fluently.

2:44:002:44:02

The problem is that there

are about 60 to 100 million kids

2:44:022:44:08

who have no access to school,

because school is too far.

2:44:082:44:12

Then you have 250 million more

who go to school and leave

2:44:122:44:14

without ever having learnt to read

or write a word.

2:44:142:44:20

These are kids in Botswana, Boston,

Brighton, it does not matter.

2:44:202:44:27

Kids go to school all over the world

and they go and don't learn.

2:44:272:44:30

Why is that?

2:44:302:44:31

That's the question

we're trying to address.

2:44:312:44:33

In our greatest desire,

every single child on planet Earth

2:44:332:44:35

has access to a world-class

education in the palm of her hand.

2:44:352:44:43

We're hoping to be back next year

to see how the teams get along,

2:44:432:44:48

but for now it's

time to say goodbye.

2:44:482:44:55

We've brought some

biscuits to say thank you,

2:44:552:44:57

and suddenly the difficulties

the team will face when they

2:44:572:44:59

arrive became clear.

2:44:592:45:04

With just 20 or so tablets

per village, there simply won't be

2:45:042:45:06

enough for everyone to take part.

2:45:062:45:08

To reduce potential jealousy,

the tablets will be locked to only

2:45:082:45:10

run the educational software,

but everyone wants one.

2:45:102:45:12

A village of mamma has been chosen

to settle any dispute.

2:45:122:45:15

And the scheme's partners, UNESCO,

will be asking some other important

2:45:152:45:18

questions about tablets too.

2:45:182:45:19

We are doing assessment

of the social and emotional

2:45:192:45:21

impact of such learning,

because we expect some

2:45:212:45:23

criticism from that side.

2:45:232:45:24

We are engaging with

the psychologists, anthropologists,

2:45:242:45:26

educationalists, to try

to understand what does

2:45:262:45:27

it do to the child?

2:45:272:45:31

Is it an option that is ethical

because children go to school,

2:45:312:45:37

they are socialised also,

it's not only the cognitive

2:45:372:45:43

learning, it's learning much more

to be part of the group.

2:45:432:45:46

It's just like back at home.

2:45:462:45:48

Now they've all got tablets,

2:45:482:45:49

they're not really

talking to anybody.

2:45:492:45:54

That was Dan in Tanzania.

2:45:552:46:00

Next, we're off to Germany

with Kate, who's found

2:46:002:46:02

an elevator that goes sideways.

2:46:022:46:06

ThE picturesque town of Rottweil,

Germany, home to fearsome dogs,

2:46:122:46:16

chocolate box buildings

and a 246-metre tower

2:46:162:46:19

housing the tallest

observation deck in Germany.

2:46:192:46:28

But this tower isn't

just about great views.

2:46:282:46:30

Built by an elevator

company ThyssenKrupp,

2:46:302:46:32

it has 12 lift shafts

running inside it.

2:46:322:46:33

One is used to transport

passengers to the top,

2:46:332:46:36

the others to test the latest

in elevator technology.

2:46:362:46:46

The inside area is in

the core of the tower.

2:46:522:46:55

Only a few people really

have the chance to see what we have

2:46:552:46:58

built and what is running there.

2:46:582:46:59

An elevator without any ropes.

2:46:592:47:00

This is revolutionary.

2:47:002:47:01

Instead of steel ropes, the cabin

is carried by linear motors,

2:47:012:47:04

it is the same tech that drives

Japan's bullet train.

2:47:042:47:08

As well as eliminating the speed

and height restrictions

2:47:082:47:11

of today's technology,

this allows passengers to travel

2:47:112:47:13

sideways as well as up and down,

just like Willy Wonka's fantastical

2:47:132:47:15

elevator in Charlie

and the Chocolate Factory.

2:47:152:47:19

Behind the scenes, behind

the car, we changed this

2:47:192:47:21

exchanger 90 degrees.

2:47:212:47:30

Get prepared for the horizontal

movement while people

2:47:302:47:33

are entering and leaving.

2:47:332:47:35

As soon as the doors close we can go

sideways to the next shaft.

2:47:352:47:38

And this is the most important thing

that we come back to -

2:47:382:47:41

a circulating system.

2:47:412:47:43

So reinventing the paternoster.

2:47:432:47:46

Using this circulating

pattern means a lift shaft

2:47:462:47:55

could hold ten or more cabins, much

more efficient than the single up

2:47:552:47:58

and down right that today's

elevators are limited to.

2:47:582:48:00

And this will only become more

important when we start looking

2:48:002:48:03

at elevators reaching perhaps 1,000

or more metres into the sky.

2:48:032:48:08

That was Kate going sideways!

2:48:092:48:14

And so are we now.

2:48:142:48:18

We're off to the place where China

makes the world's tech,

2:48:182:48:20

the city of Shenzhen,

where last month I got exclusive

2:48:202:48:24

prelaunch access to see how

a new smart phone is born.

2:48:242:48:31

They make loads of different types

of phones in this factory,

2:48:312:48:41

so to keep the 5T a secret

from all the other workers,

2:48:412:48:44

everything happens behind

the blue shroud of secrecy.

2:48:442:48:46

Are you ready?

2:48:462:48:47

Thank you.

2:48:472:48:48

Come in.

2:48:482:48:51

Welcome to production line 27.

2:48:512:49:00

The phone starts life

as just a tiny camera

2:49:002:49:02

there and it is gradually assembled

around this U-shaped

2:49:022:49:07

production line which means

by the time it gets to the end

2:49:072:49:10

it is a fully featured phone.

2:49:102:49:11

Just about there.

2:49:112:49:12

This is the reason China

has come to dominate

2:49:122:49:15

electronics manufacturing,

a ready supply of a disciplined,

2:49:152:49:21

relatively low-cost workforce.

2:49:212:49:22

Each person here has one unique job

which requires concentration,

2:49:222:49:25

speed and precision.

2:49:252:49:35

A single speck of dust caught

in the camera lens and the finished

2:49:402:49:43

phone will be rejected.

2:49:432:49:44

What I found most surprising

about this is it is all people.

2:49:442:49:48

I would have thought with this kind

of high precision job these phones

2:49:482:49:51

would have been built solely

by machines, but it is

2:49:512:49:53

pretty much all humans.

2:49:532:49:54

This is where an unlucky few phones

are pulled off the production line

2:49:542:49:57

to check extreme tolerance.

2:49:572:50:05

Elsewhere, other test phones

escape that big plunge,

2:50:052:50:10

but instead are dropped

5,000 times each.

2:50:102:50:12

Others have their charging

ports wiggled and buttons

2:50:122:50:14

pressed 10,000 times.

2:50:142:50:21

With the launch over,

one class will nervously await

2:50:212:50:23

the first reviews and more

importantly, the advance orders.

2:50:232:50:28

And they will decide whether these

people will be joined

2:50:282:50:30

by hundreds more or not.

2:50:302:50:35

A fascinating glimpse behind

the curtain there in China.

2:50:362:50:44

And now it's time to leave Earth

entirely for a few minutes

2:50:442:50:46

to remember how the Click crew

explored the final frontier in VR.

2:50:462:50:52

Virtual reality game

Star Trek Bridge Crew brings

2:50:562:51:03

together up to four players,

each taking a different role

2:51:032:51:05

on the bridge of a starship.

2:51:052:51:09

That's brilliant.

2:51:092:51:10

Incredible!

2:51:102:51:12

Oh...

2:51:122:51:13

Oh my goodness, Mark!

2:51:132:51:17

We're warping everybody.

2:51:172:51:20

Wow!

2:51:202:51:24

That's pretty, isn't it?

2:51:242:51:30

Wow.

2:51:302:51:31

We don't have time for sightseeing

though, as we receive a distress

2:51:312:51:34

signal from a stricken vessel.

2:51:342:51:35

My vessel has lost all power

and our life support systems

2:51:352:51:38

are nearly exhausted.

2:51:382:51:39

OK, so engineering -

can you transport the

2:51:392:51:42

survivors back to here?

2:51:422:51:43

I don't know.

2:51:432:51:45

LAUGHTER.

2:51:452:51:50

It's at this moment that the action

takes a turn which will appeal

2:51:502:51:53

to Star Trek superfans.

2:51:532:51:55

Wow!

2:51:552:52:00

It's a D51 cruiser.

2:52:002:52:02

It's a Klingon D5 cruiser.

2:52:022:52:04

OK, target it!

2:52:042:52:09

Target destroyed.

2:52:092:52:15

It feels like it's social VR

at its best, really.

2:52:152:52:17

Communication is a must.

2:52:172:52:18

If you don't have it, you're not

going to complete the mission.

2:52:182:52:22

It's great for team building.

2:52:222:52:23

I thought we actually had our lives

on the line for a minute.

2:52:232:52:27

A couple of sticky moments

but I think we managed to keep it

2:52:272:52:30

together as a crew and the result

was a successful mission.

2:52:302:52:36

Now, one thing we love to do

on Click is to look at how things

2:52:362:52:40

might change significantly

in the future.

2:52:402:52:44

And one area that we think

is about to pop onto the scene

2:52:442:52:47

and possibly on to many people's

plates is lab-grown meat.

2:52:472:52:52

I'm talking burgers,

steaks and fish.

2:52:522:52:53

Got a taste for it?

2:52:532:52:58

Back in July, Kat Hawkins

visited the cultured food

2:52:582:53:00

capital, San Francisco,

to see what's cooking.

2:53:002:53:05

I've come to this lab

in the heart of Silicon valley

2:53:072:53:09

to visit Impossible Foods.

2:53:092:53:11

They claim to have invented

the food of the future -

2:53:112:53:14

a completely meatless meat made

entirely of plants.

2:53:142:53:22

Impossible Foods found that the key

ingredient that gives

2:53:222:53:25

meat its characteristic irony taste

is a molecule found

2:53:252:53:28

in most living things

and especially in animal muscle.

2:53:282:53:33

Luckily, it's also found in plants.

2:53:332:53:38

So this is your magic

ingredient right?

2:53:382:53:40

Your plant-based blood.

2:53:402:53:41

Right and it provides the explosion

of flavour that you get,

2:53:412:53:45

it is the different between white

meat chicken with a beef burger.

2:53:452:53:50

The company has recently flipped

the switch on its meatless

2:53:502:54:00

meatpacking factory as it

ramps up production.

2:54:002:54:03

This will eventually make

four million burgers a month,

2:54:032:54:05

and the next aim is to move

into chicken, pork and lamb.

2:54:052:54:08

But it's one thing being

a scientist who is enthralled

2:54:082:54:10

by food tech and another to be

a chef using the ingredients

2:54:102:54:13

produced on your

carefully crafted menu.

2:54:132:54:16

I think we eat way too

much meat in general,

2:54:162:54:19

so it's a good way to be

as close as possible to meat

2:54:192:54:22

looks and tastes.

2:54:222:54:24

The Impossible Burger is now

the only one Rocco has on his menu

2:54:242:54:32

and he sells 250 of them a week.

2:54:322:54:34

It seems like at this stage it might

be a novelty for Silicon valley

2:54:342:54:38

diners with money to spend,

but of course, as always,

2:54:382:54:40

the true test is in the tasting.

2:54:402:54:42

OK, it's about to happen.

2:54:422:54:49

It's really good.

2:54:532:54:55

The texture is just like meat.

2:54:552:54:58

It doesn't taste like mince beef.

2:54:582:55:02

A little bit like mushrooms,

but I know there is no

2:55:022:55:05

mushrooms in there.

2:55:052:55:07

What comes across talking to Rocco

though, is how important

2:55:072:55:12

is for his customers

that the flavour tastes close

2:55:122:55:16

to meat while still being ethical.

2:55:162:55:18

But what if you could serve up

animal flesh without a single

2:55:182:55:21

creature being harmed?

2:55:212:55:23

That's what this several companies,

inlcuding this small

2:55:232:55:28

tech startup is working on.

2:55:282:55:30

They plan to grow actual

fish from stem cells.

2:55:302:55:35

Phyllis Foods takes a small sample

of cells from a real

2:55:352:55:37

fish and cultures it up.

2:55:372:55:41

One cell can theoretically become

one tonne of fish meat,

2:55:412:55:44

but they are not there yet.

2:55:442:55:47

We'll be on the market in three

years with products that

2:55:472:55:50

are a new version of fish that

people haven't had before and then

2:55:502:55:55

in five to six years we'll

have steaks and fillets,

2:55:552:55:58

just like the fish you currently

eat at a supermarket,

2:55:582:56:00

just like the fish you normally see

in the ocean.

2:56:002:56:02

Kat Hawkins reporting

back in the summer.

2:56:072:56:09

Now, from California

to the Netherlands where

2:56:092:56:12

Nick witnessed a dance

with a new hologram effect.

2:56:122:56:15

Today choreographers and dancers

of NDT are working with a new medium

2:56:182:56:21

for artistic expression.

2:56:212:56:25

They're taking two excerpts

from a show called Stop Motion

2:56:252:56:27

and are adapting it

to include holographic projections.

2:56:272:56:35

It's a really, bit treaty,

almost an IMAX type experience.

2:56:352:56:37

Without the need for

glasses, you know?

2:56:372:56:40

Every detail has been

carefully crafted.

2:56:402:56:45

They're projecting a fallen white

giant and dust onto a black back

2:56:452:56:48

drop playing with the themes

of light and dark and destruction.

2:56:482:56:51

Technology needs to embrace the art.

2:56:512:56:58

But not by sticking

out all by itself.

2:56:582:57:00

It needs to help, it is like a glove

to the art, to the expression.

2:57:002:57:06

The holographic illusion is created

with the help of two very high-end

2:57:062:57:09

projectors and a special

lightweight mesh screen.

2:57:092:57:11

By playing out videos

on the front mesh and back wall,

2:57:112:57:14

it creates an optical illusion

of 3-D depth.

2:57:142:57:19

For the performers it's actually

really good rig to work with,

2:57:192:57:23

they can see the projections

on the side while they are

2:57:232:57:25

on stage performing.

2:57:252:57:29

With other systems, you don't really

get that same wall realistic.

2:57:292:57:32

Dancers into position,

standby lighting and music,

2:57:322:57:34

cue projection and action!

2:57:342:57:36

MUSIC PLAYS.

2:57:362:57:41

APPLAUSE.

2:57:552:57:59

After all that globetrotting, I have

to say there is no place like home.

2:58:072:58:10

There's no place like home.

2:58:102:58:11

There's no place like home.

2:58:112:58:12

There's no place like...

2:58:122:58:13

Guards!

2:58:132:58:22

Yes, banks, voting systems

and the NHS weren't the only ones

2:58:222:58:24

to have been under attack in 2017.

2:58:242:58:26

Even in my own castle

I had my hands full with this lot.

2:58:262:58:29

We even lost our first

guest on the show.

2:58:292:58:31

Sorry Ken.

2:58:312:58:38

And in 2018, we'll be

going back into battle again,

2:58:382:58:40

reporting from wherever we find

the best technology from around

2:58:402:58:42

the globe and home.

2:58:422:58:44

We will see you next year.
