This is East Midlands Today. The top story. | :00:06. | :00:12.
A mother's anger as an airline refuses to carry her disabled son. | :00:12. | :00:15.
EasyJet says Declan's electric wheelchair is too heavy to get on | :00:16. | :00:19.
the plane. What they have done is making feel | :00:19. | :00:22.
even more different, because he cannot fly because of his | :00:22. | :00:27.
wheelchair. Also, the vending machine fire that | :00:27. | :00:34.
did this to a hospital's A&E unit. Plus, holding auditions for an | :00:34. | :00:37.
album, the army wife recording songs for soldiers. | :00:37. | :00:47.
:00:47. | :01:03. | ||
And, Kasper Schmeichel signs for Good evening. Welcome. | :01:03. | :01:07.
The top story, a mother says her son has been let down by an airline | :01:07. | :01:12.
who refused to carry his specialised wheelchair. Declan | :01:12. | :01:16.
Spencer is disabled and has deduce the chair. He has flown without any | :01:16. | :01:20.
problems with other airlines, but EasyJet says it will not taking | :01:20. | :01:24.
because the wheelchair is too heavy. His mother is thinking of taking | :01:24. | :01:31.
legal action. Declan is 12 years old. He lives | :01:31. | :01:37.
with his mother. He has muscular dystrophy. He has lost the ability | :01:37. | :01:43.
to walk. He is now in a wheelchair, and for easyJet, that is a problem. | :01:43. | :01:48.
They say the chair is too heavy to lift. It is really upset end. What | :01:48. | :01:54.
is it should have done, they have made him feel even more different, | :01:54. | :01:57.
-- what EasyJet have done. They have made a 12-year-old feel very | :01:58. | :02:02.
sad. The family were due to fly to Cyprus. They have had to alter | :02:02. | :02:07.
their flights because of the policy. For Declan, it is to be a very | :02:07. | :02:11.
special holiday. He is having spinal surgery, he will have metal | :02:11. | :02:16.
rods either side of his spine. Afterwards, he will not be able to | :02:16. | :02:24.
be lifted manually. He cannot stay in his own wheelchair on the plane. | :02:24. | :02:29.
And, he will not be able to sit in a plane seat. Other airlines will | :02:29. | :02:39.
:02:39. | :02:51. | ||
accept his wheelchair. EasyJet said, The fact that his wheelchair, he | :02:51. | :02:59.
needs it, and so it cannot be taken to pieces. They say they cannot fly | :02:59. | :03:04.
out with it because he is so severely disabled. It is not right. | :03:04. | :03:07.
She believes the policy amounts to discrimination. She is getting | :03:08. | :03:14.
legal advice. EasyJet have told us they are | :03:14. | :03:17.
refunding the tickets and the family of going on holiday with | :03:17. | :03:22.
another airline. Birt Alexandra says the experience has been | :03:22. | :03:27.
upsetting. I spoke to Robin Meadowcroft, the chief executive of | :03:27. | :03:30.
the most British of the campaign. I asked him for his reaction to the | :03:31. | :03:36.
decision. We are very disappointed at the | :03:36. | :03:42.
stance. We wish they would have talked to the family and found a | :03:42. | :03:47.
solution. Lots of families are affected by this. It comes down to | :03:47. | :03:52.
health and safety. 60 kilograms is a heavy weight to carry. Yes, but | :03:52. | :03:57.
other airlines find ways of overcoming the problem. You cannot | :03:57. | :04:02.
have a specialist piece of equipment being dismantled by | :04:02. | :04:06.
engineers in one airport, and if it all right at the same destination, | :04:06. | :04:11.
reassembled. It is not going to work, the kit is expensive. There | :04:11. | :04:16.
is a better solution that other airlines find. Can you put pressure | :04:16. | :04:23.
on easyJet to market their roles? - - look at their rules? We are | :04:23. | :04:27.
trying to have a positive relationship, to find a solution. | :04:27. | :04:32.
They have got this wrong. Ultimately, the onus is on the | :04:32. | :04:37.
person booking the flight to make sure they look up the rules, and if | :04:37. | :04:44.
it does not work, go with an alternative. Yes, but if all other | :04:44. | :04:48.
airlines are accommodating these wheelchairs, that is not right, and | :04:48. | :04:55.
there is legislation about equal access. Are you hopeful that you | :04:55. | :04:59.
might see a change in the future, and it will become easier for | :04:59. | :05:02.
people with wheelchairs to travel abroad? I am always hopeful, but | :05:02. | :05:11.
the fight goes on. He was the 370 if a soldier to fall | :05:11. | :05:16.
in Afghanistan. Today he was buried with full military honours in | :05:16. | :05:19.
Nottingham. Lance Corporal Martin Gill was killed earlier this month | :05:19. | :05:23.
while on foot patrol. Today, friends and comrades paid tribute | :05:23. | :05:28.
to him. Lance Corporal Martin Gill came | :05:28. | :05:34.
home today. The soldier from 42 Commando was buried at the Roman | :05:34. | :05:37.
Catholic Church of the Good Shepherd in Woodthorpe. He was | :05:37. | :05:43.
given full military honours. I saw him growing up, he was young, | :05:43. | :05:47.
athletic, a great swimmer, and I remember him swimming his first | :05:47. | :05:53.
sponsored mile for charity. He always put others before himself. | :05:53. | :05:58.
He was killed on fifth June. An hour into a foot patrol in south | :05:58. | :06:02.
Helmand and leading from the front, he was fatally wounded by small | :06:02. | :06:06.
arms fire. He was promoted to lance-corporal within three months, | :06:06. | :06:11.
that is testimony to the man who we are talking about. Professional, | :06:11. | :06:16.
loyal, selfless in every act. These were the characteristics that stood | :06:16. | :06:22.
him out. Those who knew him said that he was always destined to be a | :06:22. | :06:26.
Royal Marine. He was fearless, but his death follows his mother's | :06:26. | :06:33.
recently. She was a young woman, she died of cancer, only three | :06:33. | :06:38.
months ago. This is the third death in that immediate family. Days | :06:38. | :06:41.
after he was killed, the Prime Minister said he would never be | :06:41. | :06:46.
forgotten. Family, friends and comrades would insure that he never | :06:46. | :06:56.
:06:56. | :06:57. | ||
It took more than 70 firefighters hours to bring under control, and | :06:57. | :07:01.
caused damage totalling millions. The fire at one of our main | :07:01. | :07:06.
hospitals also meant the closure of its accident and emergency unit, | :07:06. | :07:12.
and the transfer of patients to other units in the East Midlands. | :07:12. | :07:21.
Let's go live to Rob Sissons, at the Chesterfield Royal Hospital. | :07:21. | :07:25.
Accident and emergency now back up and running, but for 16 hours it | :07:25. | :07:31.
was closed, patients were ferried to other hospitals, and the fire | :07:31. | :07:38.
started all the way down there in the main entrance. What took hours | :07:38. | :07:47.
to destroy, it will take many months to put right. | :07:47. | :07:51.
It is a friendly welcome, but not the first impression a major | :07:51. | :07:54.
hospital would want to give. The staff have been praised for the way | :07:54. | :07:57.
they have got the building back in action, even though the main | :07:57. | :08:02.
entrance is closed. It was not too bad, they are coping well. | :08:02. | :08:05.
Everything was fine, the appointment was as quick as it | :08:05. | :08:09.
normally is. It is incredible to think this devastating fire was | :08:09. | :08:13.
caused by an electrical fault in a vending machine. It started on | :08:13. | :08:17.
Saturday night. A newsagents, waiting area and the main entrance | :08:17. | :08:23.
were badly damaged. It will cost millions to repair. We are open for | :08:23. | :08:28.
business. The department which was evacuated on Saturday evening, | :08:28. | :08:35.
Sunday morning, it was reopened on Sunday at 1pm. We remained open to | :08:35. | :08:40.
our patients, we are still admitting people for surgery. | :08:40. | :08:43.
entrance might not be the most attractive front door, but it has | :08:43. | :08:48.
meant the building can stay open. They will be no cancellations for | :08:48. | :08:51.
patients, but they are being warned they might have to wait longer or | :08:51. | :08:55.
walk to another part of the building. The struggle damage to | :08:55. | :09:00.
the main entrance is so severe, it could take months to reopen. The | :09:00. | :09:05.
priority is cleaning up what they can. The only comings and goings on | :09:05. | :09:12.
management and engineers, with the long road to rebuilding the head. | :09:12. | :09:16.
-- ahead. How long before things get back to | :09:16. | :09:22.
normal? It will be many months. Patients will have to get used to a | :09:22. | :09:26.
lot of changes. They are having to use this entrance. The patients | :09:26. | :09:31.
come from Ripley, Matlock, and when they come into the hospital, they | :09:31. | :09:37.
will find some changes. This fracture clinic is shut, and this | :09:37. | :09:42.
area is fenced off. Plenty of volunteers on hand to direct people. | :09:42. | :09:47.
The entrance did not have any sprinklers, why is that? We were | :09:47. | :09:52.
told there is no legal requirement for that, but the rebuilding of the | :09:52. | :09:59.
main entrance, only refurbished a couple of years ago, they will look | :09:59. | :10:05.
next time at whether to put them in or not. | :10:05. | :10:08.
Coming up, the fall weather forecast, and what a crazy day it | :10:08. | :10:12.
has been. And, East Midlands Today has been | :10:12. | :10:16.
on tour this weekend. We bring you all of the highlights from the | :10:16. | :10:26.
:10:26. | :10:30. | ||
A man has pleaded guilty to daubing racist graffiti outside a building | :10:30. | :10:34.
in Nottinghamshire. Magistrates heard that a pig's head was left on | :10:34. | :10:37.
a poll outside the building in West Bridgford, which has been | :10:38. | :10:41.
considered as a possible site for a mosque. The sentencing of | :10:41. | :10:47.
Christopher Paine has been adjourned, pending reports. | :10:47. | :10:51.
School children and teachers in Nottingham could be facing changes | :10:51. | :10:55.
to their term times and holidays. The City Council is to consult with | :10:56. | :11:00.
staff, pupils and parents about whether a change to five or six | :11:00. | :11:05.
shorter-term would help learning and reduce tiredness. | :11:06. | :11:09.
Derby's special baby-care unit will remain closed to new admissions for | :11:09. | :11:14.
most of this week. Only parents and staff are allowed them. This is | :11:14. | :11:19.
after two babies were infected with the MSSA bug. Three others have | :11:19. | :11:24.
been cabin the bacteria on their skin. The Royal Derby Hospital says | :11:24. | :11:29.
investigations are continuing. The 600 million has been cut from | :11:29. | :11:34.
the social care budget for all the people in the last 12 months. That | :11:34. | :11:38.
is the claim from the charity Age UK, were read it will mean more all | :11:38. | :11:42.
the people being left isolated in their own homes -- were read. | :11:42. | :11:46.
Friends of the elderly have been illustrating exactly what that is | :11:46. | :11:51.
like. 10 volunteers have lived in their homes without any human | :11:51. | :11:56.
contact. Geoff Maskell was the first to | :11:56. | :12:00.
visit one volunteer. It is always nice to have visitor, | :12:00. | :12:06.
but for the last week, nobody has been to call here. The occupant is | :12:06. | :12:11.
in her 30s, but this is part of an experiment on isolation and older | :12:11. | :12:20.
people. Hello! Good to see you! Able welcome after a week without | :12:20. | :12:26.
company. No visitors, calls for access to the internet. No human | :12:26. | :12:31.
contact, stuck in here. I had to do tasks every day, wearing empathy | :12:31. | :12:36.
Aids to mimic the debilitating effects of old age that some people | :12:36. | :12:42.
have. For a kimono, the physical constraints made a huge difference. | :12:42. | :12:47.
-- for a keen runner. I live on my own, but under these conditions, I | :12:48. | :12:53.
felt trapped. I wanted to do things, but I had to stay end. The week is | :12:53. | :12:58.
over, but according to the charity, 12% of all the people feel trapped | :12:58. | :13:03.
in their own home. 200,000 seniors do not get out of the house, and | :13:03. | :13:08.
50% say that television is their main company. But this is Larkhill. | :13:08. | :13:13.
When it opened two years ago, a quarter of the residents needed | :13:13. | :13:22.
some kind of care. Not any more. Over 30 people in two years have | :13:22. | :13:30.
come out of the support package. That is due to our care that we | :13:30. | :13:40.
:13:40. | :13:43. | ||
I have got a family, but you are on your own ones that door closes. But | :13:43. | :13:48.
now you have only got open your door and somebody is passing! | :13:48. | :13:53.
council should be doing this! Everybody should be doing this. I | :13:53. | :13:58.
have said this all along - they should close all the old folks' | :13:58. | :14:03.
homes and build big places like this. | :14:03. | :14:08.
We are joined by Sandra Taylor, a trustee with Friends of the Elderly, | :14:09. | :14:14.
the organisation that carried out the project. Why did you do this? | :14:14. | :14:18.
We wanted to raise awareness among the public about how many people | :14:18. | :14:25.
are so isolated and, also, what might be able to be done about it. | :14:25. | :14:28.
What will you be able to learn from this? It is an interesting | :14:28. | :14:34.
experiment - just a week and it was almost unbearable. We had 10 young | :14:34. | :14:38.
people from all walks of life, all over the country, giving blogs and | :14:38. | :14:44.
video diaries. Their findings and experiences will be looked at by | :14:44. | :14:48.
Northumbria University as part of a wider study into social isolation, | :14:48. | :14:54.
with the hope that that can inform social policy and the ways in which | :14:54. | :15:02.
we might be able to help. A huge amount has been cut from the social | :15:02. | :15:08.
care budget - is this really going to make any difference? 600,000, | :15:09. | :15:13.
as reported by Age UK, is a dramatic reduction, and will make a | :15:13. | :15:18.
difference to people who depend on social care. Charities like ours | :15:18. | :15:24.
are very dependent on a voluntary activities, contributions from | :15:24. | :15:28.
charitable funds and individuals. We will work hard, and continue to | :15:28. | :15:33.
work hard, to provide services, but we can't replace state services and | :15:33. | :15:40.
wouldn't expect to. Let's hope this experiment goes some way to helping | :15:40. | :15:45.
people make informed decisions in future. | :15:45. | :15:49.
Homes and had to be evacuated earlier today because of a fire at | :15:49. | :15:53.
a scrapyard in Derbyshire. Crews were called to Lift & Shift in | :15:53. | :15:58.
Cromford Road in Langley Mill just before 11am this morning. Concern | :15:58. | :16:02.
about a number of cars and acetylene cylinders in the | :16:02. | :16:06.
scrapyard prompted the move to evacuate some residents. | :16:06. | :16:09.
Police have issued this image of a man they want to trace in | :16:09. | :16:14.
connection with an indecent assault on a 14-year-old girl in Leicester. | :16:14. | :16:17.
It happened on June 3rd as the teenager was waiting at a burger | :16:17. | :16:21.
van outside Anstey Lane Club. Anyone with information is asked to | :16:21. | :16:29.
contact officers. Summer arrived in the East Midlands | :16:29. | :16:34.
yesterday. And this sunshine certainly drew the crowds -- crowds | :16:34. | :16:40.
to the Derbyshire County Show. We were all there, too, with our | :16:40. | :16:46.
roadshow, inviting visitors to have a go at doing our jobs! | :16:46. | :16:49.
We couldn't have asked for a better day here at the Derbyshire County | :16:49. | :16:59.
:16:59. | :17:10. | ||
Show. The sun has come out and so This is just the kind of thing you | :17:10. | :17:15.
need on a gorgeous summer's a day like today - a vintage car. But we | :17:15. | :17:25.
:17:25. | :17:26. | ||
have got one or two classics of our And here he is. Dominic, you have | :17:26. | :17:32.
been very busy. I have been doing a lot of this. Thank you. I was | :17:32. | :17:42.
:17:42. | :17:49. | ||
handing out rosettes earlier. I Are you enjoying the show? I am. It | :17:49. | :17:53.
is a really good show because it is not to massive, just the right size, | :17:53. | :17:58.
and there is lots to see and do. And the crowds are stopped in at | :17:58. | :18:03.
our roadshow and had a go at doing our jobs. Hello and welcome to the | :18:04. | :18:13.
:18:14. | :18:31. | ||
So, that's it from the Derbyshire County Show. If you missed us this | :18:31. | :18:41.
:18:41. | :18:49. | ||
Whatever you do, come on down! It looked fantastic. Still to come: | :18:49. | :18:53.
Singing for soldiers - as auditions are held up, we need the army wife | :18:53. | :18:59.
who aims to raise spirits and money through music. | :18:59. | :19:09.
:19:09. | :19:11. | ||
# Although you are in my hard # I It has all been going on in the | :19:11. | :19:18.
sport! We start with two new signings for | :19:18. | :19:22.
Leicester City. Midfielder Neil Danns comes from Crystal Palace but | :19:22. | :19:26.
the man who has really caught the eye is Kaspar Schmeichel. He is the | :19:26. | :19:30.
son of Peter, formerly of Notts County, and joining Sven Goran | :19:30. | :19:35.
Eriksson for the third time. The builders here are delighted to | :19:35. | :19:39.
see him, but Leicester's pursuit of Kaspar Schmeichel has not been | :19:39. | :19:43.
entirely straightforward. After Leeds made their offer public, | :19:43. | :19:47.
Schmeichel insisted he wanted to stay in Yorkshire. And yet here he | :19:47. | :19:53.
is. It is just football. It is in the past and I wish Leeds all the | :19:53. | :19:59.
best. I am a Leicester City player now and over the moon to be here. I | :19:59. | :20:06.
can't wait to get going. Renowned for sometimes pulling off | :20:06. | :20:10.
a spectacular save, it is not always fun being one of the back | :20:10. | :20:15.
four. He can be very focused. don't really notice what's going on | :20:15. | :20:24.
other than on the pitch. I just want to win. When we don't, I am | :20:24. | :20:29.
not happy. It wasn't just Kaspar. They have signed Neil Danns, as | :20:29. | :20:35.
well, who has real ambition for his new club. It was great to be | :20:35. | :20:41.
offered the chance to go and play for Rangers. But once I knew that | :20:41. | :20:49.
the fans of the club were aiming for the Premier League, that is | :20:49. | :20:55.
something that is in my ambitions, as well. As for Kaspar, who we know | :20:55. | :21:00.
from Notts County, he has had three wins in three years. He just wants | :21:00. | :21:05.
stability to see a contract through. Things out of my control dictated | :21:05. | :21:13.
these last couple of times. I hope that I can, but football throws up | :21:13. | :21:19.
some weird stuff sometimes and you can't always plan. I guess another | :21:19. | :21:24.
promotion would rather sit in, to! Nottingham Forest's manager Steve | :21:24. | :21:28.
McLaren has headed for France to try to persuade the midfielder to | :21:28. | :21:32.
stay at the club. The 26-year-old French and is out of contract and | :21:32. | :21:36.
has attracted interest from Premier League sides but McLaren want Guy | :21:36. | :21:41.
Moussi to stay. It in cricket's Twenty20, more than | :21:41. | :21:45.
8,000 people were at Trent Bridge yesterday seeing Nottingham beat | :21:45. | :21:51.
Lancashire. They now top the table. They returned a international | :21:51. | :21:55.
cricket did not go well for Nottingham's Samit Patel. He was | :21:55. | :22:00.
just three balls and when this disaster fell upon him. He went for | :22:00. | :22:04.
a run that never was and was slow in getting back. It wasn't great | :22:04. | :22:10.
for Stuart Broad. He was run out as England were hammered by Sri Lanka. | :22:10. | :22:17.
Derbyshire are back in championship action today. Wes Durston got a | :22:17. | :22:21.
century. Well done to Lucy Hall, the | :22:21. | :22:25.
triathlete repeated on Friday. She won gold. | :22:25. | :22:29.
It is difficult for most of us to imagine what it is like having a | :22:29. | :22:33.
loved one away serving in the forces overseas. One person who | :22:33. | :22:37.
knows is another of two from Derby, whose soldier husband is due to go | :22:37. | :22:43.
to Afghanistan this year. To occupy the time he is away and to support | :22:43. | :22:47.
our forces overseas, Stacey Fisher is raising money by a recording her | :22:47. | :22:51.
own songs. In fact, she hopes to produce a whole album, with | :22:51. | :23:01.
performances by like-minded amateurs. | :23:01. | :23:08.
# Where is the love? Natasha from the East Midlands, | :23:08. | :23:13.
singing her own competition for the judges hearing Derby. Like another | :23:13. | :23:18.
well-known singing competition, there is an ex involved, but this | :23:18. | :23:25.
is aimed at a different audience. These auditions are for amateur | :23:25. | :23:29.
singers and composers to perform on an album supporting British forces | :23:29. | :23:35.
overseas. It's the brainchild of Stacey Fisher from Derby. Her | :23:35. | :23:39.
husband Dan, a soldier, is off again to Afghanistan and she wants | :23:39. | :23:43.
to release an album for the charity she has founded, Singing For | :23:43. | :23:47.
Soldiers. The we are looking for singers to feature on the album. | :23:47. | :23:51.
They will get studio time and raise money for charity and also perform | :23:51. | :23:57.
at events throughout the UK. It is open to anybody - you don't need a | :23:57. | :24:00.
professional experience. We have had people come from all over - | :24:00. | :24:08.
Surrey, London, Wales. It has been every be good turnout. | :24:08. | :24:12.
# Two weeks have gone and still no word. | :24:12. | :24:16.
The kids are asking why, where is daddy? | :24:16. | :24:20.
Stay EC has already written and recorded her own track for the | :24:20. | :24:25.
album, outlining the anguish wives feel when their husbands go off at | :24:25. | :24:31.
four. I wanted to do something that would help everybody and raise lots | :24:31. | :24:36.
of money for a good cause. What is it about Singing For | :24:36. | :24:39.
Soldiers that attracted your attention? But what does husband | :24:39. | :24:44.
Dan think of it all? He is really proud. He is a bit biased because | :24:44. | :24:50.
he is my husband, but he is really supportive. | :24:51. | :24:55.
Stacey hoped the album, sold to raise money for troops' relief, | :24:55. | :25:03.
will be out this year, with some of these audition lease on it. -- of | :25:03. | :25:08.
these people auditioning on it. What a brilliant idea! I can't | :25:08. | :25:12.
think of anything worse than standing on a cross and singing. | :25:12. | :25:22.

How scary! We are not known for The weather has been extraordinary. | :25:25. | :25:32.
It has been very hot and humid. The weather is starting to change, so | :25:32. | :25:37.
good news if it has not been agreeing with you. As family of | :25:37. | :25:42.
swans decided to go out for a bit of a walk. Thank you to Brian, who | :25:42. | :25:45.
captured these shots of them walking along the road. Do dad got | :25:45. | :25:50.
annoyed with the traffic and stood in front of the cars to hold up the | :25:50. | :25:53.
proceedings until mum and decades crossed the road. | :25:53. | :25:57.
We are going to start to see slightly better temperatures coming | :25:57. | :26:04.
in, but we wait until tomorrow at to see them. We start to see a few | :26:04. | :26:09.
heavy, thundery showers tonight. A few showers on the radar today but | :26:09. | :26:15.
they have not produced much rain. You might get a dry shower, where | :26:15. | :26:20.
you hear the thunder and see the lightning but don't get much rain. | :26:20. | :26:24.
It will stay quite hot and humid with a minimum temperature of 12 | :26:24. | :26:29.
Celsius. The showers are still around first thing tomorrow, mainly | :26:29. | :26:33.
across the east of the region. We stay quite cloudy through Tuesday | :26:33. | :26:38.
and it will be quite drizzly at times, as well. Patchy rain on and | :26:38. | :26:42.
off into the afternoon. Daytime temperatures going back to what | :26:42. | :26:48.
they should be for the time of year. A maximum of 19 Celsius. A decent | :26:48. | :26:52.
day on Wednesday. We will stay reasonably warm and temperatures | :26:52. | :26:57.
will be around 19 Celsius. A bit of cloud coming and going into the | :26:57. | :27:01.
afternoon, and we have high pressure building back in towards | :27:01. | :27:05.
the end of the week. At the moment, it looks as if we will stay mainly | :27:05. | :27:10.
dry. There will always be the opportunity for a light shower but | :27:10. | :27:14.
the temperatures will go back down to more realistic values. If you | :27:14. | :27:18.
have not felt very well - I have had bad asthma - it will go back to | :27:18. | :27:24. |
