Good evening and welcome to a special East Midlands Today. The

:00:17.:00:21.

Olympic torch has travelled through our region and it has taken to the

:00:21.:00:31.
:00:31.:00:39.

air. We will have a bird's-eye view A very warm welcome to the

:00:39.:00:44.

programme and a welcome to the historic cathedral quarter in Derby.

:00:44.:00:50.

It dates back in parts to the 16th century. I'm sure a piece of

:00:50.:00:54.

history will be made here. Thousands of people have been

:00:54.:01:01.

lining the streets. Here are some of them. The son has just come out.

:01:01.:01:11.
:01:11.:01:11.

Apology for the loss of subtitles for 43 seconds

:01:11.:01:55.

Let's have a look at the flavour of Many more great images like that to

:01:55.:02:00.

come. At the moment, we are playing a waiting game - waiting for the

:02:00.:02:07.

torch bearers to arrive in our part of Derby. Where are they? We might

:02:07.:02:13.

be able to let you know. Some whack up there is a helicopter with Simon

:02:13.:02:20.

on board. -- somewhere. Where is the torch? I cannot see it. We are

:02:20.:02:28.

hovering about 1000 ft above fugue in the marketplace. We have seen

:02:28.:02:38.
:02:38.:02:38.

crowds all the way along. It sets off from Mark Eaton Park. The

:02:38.:02:43.

crowds are definitely forming. Derby is looking lovely in the

:02:43.:02:52.

sunshine and very green tonight from up here. Every day this torch

:02:52.:02:56.

relay is different from the rest. The big thing that makes Derbyshire

:02:56.:03:02.

so very special is the landscape - the countryside. I am sure we will

:03:02.:03:06.

find the images of Derbyshire are really what made the torch relay

:03:06.:03:13.

event so very special. It started off at Nottingham Castle. It has

:03:13.:03:22.

gone through Derbyshire on Day 422. Robb has been following the flame.

:03:22.:03:30.

-- 42. Today the torch was king of the castle. The starting point next

:03:30.:03:36.

to Robin head. There is always time for a quick kiss and then it is off

:03:37.:03:43.

into student land. These front row seats cost nothing. The atmosphere

:03:43.:03:49.

it is amazing. Lots of people ice - - I spoke to do not have tickets

:03:49.:03:59.
:03:59.:03:59.

for the Olympics but want to feel part of it. Now then, now then, at

:03:59.:04:09.
:04:09.:04:11.

now Ben! -- then. From Nottingham, it is Derby. You probably would not

:04:11.:04:19.

want a taxi to take you this way. It is 112 miles. Loads of Union

:04:19.:04:25.

Jacks. It was fabulous. Then the home of Lord Byron. A wonder what

:04:25.:04:35.
:04:35.:04:42.

he would have thought - poetry in motion! -- I wonder. I think you'll

:04:42.:04:46.

find you are not part of the official torch security. From the

:04:46.:04:52.

famous crooked spire in Chesterfield, on to our most famous

:04:52.:04:57.

stately home. There was only one thing were chatting about - the

:04:57.:05:04.

torch. Perhaps best not to do this with it. Surely a high point of the

:05:04.:05:12.

day. But then it was uphill through Bakewell to our highest town -

:05:12.:05:19.

Buxton. All the earth that the athletes have put into this. -- the

:05:20.:05:24.

effort. They call this the they wait to Dove Dale - Ashbourne. Here

:05:24.:05:32.

they entered into the Olympic spirit. There is only 28 days to go.

:05:32.:05:40.

Can you believe it? Some amazing pictures. As I predicted, some

:05:40.:05:47.

wonderful landscape shops -- shots from Derbyshire. So many amazing

:05:47.:05:53.

stories about the torch bearers. Today was a moment for a 16-year-

:05:53.:05:57.

old girl from Derbyshire to really shine. She got to the top of her

:05:57.:06:03.

sport despite having cystic fibrosis. Today have family shared

:06:03.:06:09.

her big moment but they had to be on her toes as well. That is not

:06:09.:06:15.

the torch-bearer on the run, that is her dad. 15-year-old Katie was

:06:16.:06:25.
:06:26.:06:26.

sent, her family and friends, were not sure where to start. It is

:06:26.:06:31.

amazing. No wonder the brass band was in fine form. Hundreds of

:06:31.:06:38.

people lined the route. Kids from a school down the road. Above, a

:06:38.:06:43.

bird's-eye view. Others wrapped up nice and warm from the British

:06:43.:06:50.

summer. Tennis is her passion. She has become Derbyshire it's number

:06:50.:06:57.

one at under 16 Foster that is despite having cystic fibrosis. --

:06:57.:07:03.

under 16. She'd ticket at a relaxed job. Mum, dad and friends were

:07:03.:07:11.

trying to keep up. -- she took it. I did not think that many people

:07:11.:07:20.

would show up. I really enjoyed it. I had to try to run up there in my

:07:20.:07:26.

suit. I ran up as well. I did not know where he had gone. He

:07:26.:07:30.

disappeared. The shock and have face when she saw all these people.

:07:30.:07:38.

They were crowding around. -- on her face. Now Katie is taking her

:07:38.:07:46.

torch into her school and tennis centre. Here she is - the young

:07:46.:07:52.

lady of the moment. Did you see that? I was quite surprised. I did

:07:52.:07:57.

not think there was that match of May. We think you are a very

:07:57.:08:06.

special girl. -- much of me. What was it like doing the round? It was

:08:06.:08:14.

crazy. I did not think there would be that many people around. There

:08:14.:08:21.

is a man on bouncy stilts. Describe the atmosphere. On the bus I got

:08:21.:08:27.

bombarded by people. People were saying, have my child, have my

:08:27.:08:35.

child! I thought, I am going to drop the baby. People were having

:08:35.:08:41.

photos. Two of my friends were there. There were too many people.

:08:41.:08:48.

You must be very proud of Katie. Extremely proud. She is an amazing

:08:48.:08:54.

girl. So calm and collected. It is a cliche but she and young people

:08:54.:08:59.

like her are really are an example, aren't they? They are. It does not

:08:59.:09:04.

matter what is thrown at her, she will have a go. She puts great

:09:04.:09:09.

effort into whatever she does. She is a great person. It is yet

:09:09.:09:16.

another cliche but this was for you the experience of a lifetime.

:09:16.:09:22.

ever came again, I would definitely want to do it again. It was really

:09:22.:09:26.

special. Everybody - even the people on the bus - they were

:09:26.:09:34.

really nice and really helpful. Thank you for bringing the sunshine.

:09:34.:09:41.

I am confidently told the torch is heading our way. It has come from

:09:41.:09:45.

Buxton to Ashbourne this afternoon and we are hoping it is making its

:09:45.:09:53.

way down the Ashbourne Road. Sarah will tell us. The torch is coming.

:09:53.:09:59.

We know that because the convoy is here. Look who I have with me!

:09:59.:10:06.

Someone very special - pepper. How must he be feeling right now?

:10:06.:10:15.

Excited but really nervous. -- you'd be feeling. They have been

:10:15.:10:24.

waiting down now. There are so many people down there - all cheering.

:10:24.:10:34.
:10:34.:10:40.

All your friends are here. Why were you nominated? I work for

:10:40.:10:44.

Derbyshire mental health services. I represent all the people who

:10:44.:10:48.

really go that extra mile. It is all to do with a training with

:10:48.:10:54.

Nordic walking. I'm not a natural when it comes to exercise. I

:10:54.:11:02.

discovered Nordic walking. I do it with my clients. I love it. I feel

:11:03.:11:09.

a bit lost. It is very exciting. How proud are you to carry this

:11:09.:11:15.

torch? Really proud. I never dreamt I would do something like this.

:11:15.:11:19.

When I was nominated I never thought it would come to anything.

:11:19.:11:26.

It is becoming a bit of a reality. The torch is coming, isn't it? We

:11:26.:11:32.

will lead you to it. These women work with her. Why did you nominate

:11:32.:11:38.

her? She really deserves it. She goes that extra mile. Are you

:11:38.:11:48.
:11:48.:11:48.

excited? This is your first glimpse of the torch, isn't it? I am very

:11:48.:11:55.

excited. We are told the torch is on its way. Let's see if we can see

:11:55.:11:59.

it was up in the distance, possibly up there. I'll just grab a few

:11:59.:12:04.

words with spectators who have come out this evening. Why was it so

:12:04.:12:12.

important? It is a once in a lifetime opportunity. The Jubilee,

:12:12.:12:21.

the Olympics - fantastic for our country! This is of this is

:12:22.:12:26.

something quite amazing for you. What will it mean to see the torch

:12:26.:12:32.

come right past you? -- have obviously. What do you think of the

:12:32.:12:39.

atmosphere? It is really good - amazing. Thank you very much. I

:12:39.:12:44.

hope you enjoy it. This is the convoy which is coming down the

:12:44.:12:49.

road. At some point down here, the torch is coming, we are told. The

:12:49.:12:55.

crowd is as far as the eye can see - people waving their flags -

:12:55.:13:00.

getting excited, getting in the mood for doing this. Pepper is

:13:00.:13:07.

getting ready to take a moment, which will be so exciting for her.

:13:07.:13:13.

-- a moment. Here are a lot of media vehicles and support convoys.

:13:13.:13:21.

This is the torch. It is carried by Daniel Longhurst from Derby. His

:13:21.:13:28.

passion for dance got him the nomination. He has inspired so many

:13:28.:13:36.

people. This is the kiss. A few photos get taken of this monumental

:13:36.:13:46.
:13:46.:13:55.

Another kiss to mark the moment of the kiss and she will start her

:13:55.:14:05.

moment - taking it along Ashbourne Road. Huge cheers from the crowd.

:14:05.:14:11.

She will be giving it took Dan, one of our best Paralympic athletes.

:14:11.:14:17.

High hopes for him in the Games in the discus. Off she goes. She is

:14:17.:14:27.
:14:27.:14:28.

heading towards you. It is on its way. Isn't that wonderful? How

:14:28.:14:33.

fantastic to see that kiss point happening live in front of our

:14:33.:14:39.

cameras! Wonderful images. It is on its way, that is the main thing.

:14:39.:14:46.

The torch relay - the torch has been carried by the wonders number

:14:46.:14:54.

of means. It has been across rivers using zip wires, on top of

:14:54.:14:59.

mountains, on a camel. Not during this particular Olympics, I must

:14:59.:15:06.

say. Something unique has happened. It has travelled by cable car as

:15:06.:15:12.

Anthony Bartram reports. The torch has been taken over the edge come

:15:12.:15:18.

up on the water. Who can forget this? After a zip wire the

:15:18.:15:22.

adrenalin rush, what you really need to do is slow down and enjoy

:15:22.:15:30.

the ride. This iconic cable-car ride up the heights of the --

:15:30.:15:36.

Abraham has seemed apt. The torch has been off-road before but never

:15:36.:15:42.

with views like this. 15-year-old gymnast Dominic Cunningham from

:15:42.:15:48.

Birmingham hopes the 2016 Olympics are on his horizon, as he climbed

:15:48.:15:52.

over the Derwent Valley. There was plenty to inspire. The warming

:15:52.:15:57.

effect of the flame has been seen and heard all along its route.

:15:57.:16:02.

were hanging out of the window with an Olympic torch. Seeing everyone

:16:02.:16:07.

on the hilltop was brilliant. primary-school were the top

:16:07.:16:14.

cheerleaders. What did you think of the torch? Brilliant! I was really

:16:14.:16:20.

excited to see it in the cable car. It was awesome. I really liked it.

:16:20.:16:26.

The fact it was maybe the last time we would see it in our country.

:16:26.:16:32.

Another happy crowd up lifted, it was soon time for the ride Down, to

:16:32.:16:42.
:16:42.:16:48.

There is a bit of a party atmosphere building up behind me,

:16:48.:16:54.

isn't there? That is nothing compared with what will happen

:16:54.:16:58.

later. The really big party is happening not very far from here,

:16:58.:17:08.
:17:08.:17:13.

Hello. I have got Colin Jackson with Meath was a delightful to have

:17:13.:17:18.

you with me! It is a pleasure to be here. It is the second time I have

:17:18.:17:24.

ever come to Derby. An incredible amount of people in the park, just

:17:24.:17:29.

to see something spectacular. are waiting. The flame will come

:17:29.:17:36.

here. It will go through the clouds -- crowds and light the cauldron.

:17:36.:17:46.
:17:46.:17:46.

We reckon we may have 20,000 people here. Do join us at 7pm. We are

:17:46.:17:49.

featuring a wonderful stories of all the torch bearers today and

:17:49.:17:54.

over the next few days as the relay heads across the East Midlands.

:17:54.:18:02.

There are so many of them that they have to put three of them together.

:18:02.:18:09.

Three of our bearers and this report. Lots of students live here

:18:09.:18:15.

so where better to carry the torch and through Lenton. Rebecca is at

:18:16.:18:21.

Nottingham Trent University. It is her rise to the top of table tennis

:18:21.:18:26.

that has earned her the honour of carrying the torch. Bennett was the

:18:26.:18:33.

turn of Clary Jones to carry the flame. -- then it was. She lost her

:18:33.:18:39.

leg after a hit and run accident. She wants to set up a visit -- a

:18:39.:18:44.

business to design clothes for disabled people. This man gave both

:18:44.:18:48.

students the good news they would be running with the flame. Both

:18:48.:18:54.

girls were worried at being called to the office. It was emotional for

:18:54.:19:00.

them. It was amazing! It was a once-in-a-lifetime thing. Not just

:19:00.:19:08.

a kiss but a handshake for Bill Ferguson. He has had a lifetime of

:19:08.:19:13.

athletics, running for Team GB. He was the team manager in the

:19:13.:19:17.

Commonwealth Games three times. There was a hug along the way for

:19:17.:19:23.

extra support. For young and old today it was a time for them all to

:19:23.:19:33.
:19:33.:19:33.

shine. Welcome back to the cathedral quarter. Behind me, a

:19:33.:19:36.

group of people you might not normally expect to see in the

:19:36.:19:42.

centre of Derby. A group of sailors - Sea cadets to be more precise.

:19:42.:19:47.

With them Sea Cadet leader. Welcome! I can see from where you

:19:47.:19:54.

are holding their you had your day today. Where did you do your run?

:19:54.:19:59.

It was a fantastic day for do- nothing like I was expecting.

:19:59.:20:09.
:20:09.:20:10.

you nominated? -- a fantastic day. Nothing like I was expecting.

:20:10.:20:15.

People might think there is not a lot of sea in the East Midlands so

:20:15.:20:22.

why is that happening? We are based in Nottingham. There are loads of

:20:22.:20:26.

different training organisations throughout the UK. You ran twice

:20:26.:20:32.

today. How did that happen? I did my initial run and was asked to

:20:32.:20:37.

continue for the extra 300 metres, which I agreed to do. You can

:20:37.:20:41.

probably hear the huge amount of noise behind me. That is because

:20:41.:20:46.

the first part of the convoy has arrived in the cathedral quarter of

:20:46.:20:51.

Derby. Blue lights flashing, outriders. This is the initial part

:20:51.:20:57.

of the cavalcade. It does not mean that the torch bearer has arrived.

:20:57.:21:04.

It is the advance party. It is so exciting. It whips the crowds up

:21:04.:21:10.

into a frenzy. The torch bearer is about five minutes behind. It is

:21:10.:21:16.

good to see the advance party. Where were we? You experienced all

:21:16.:21:22.

this excitement as you were doing the round, is it overwhelming?

:21:22.:21:26.

definitely was. Seeing the crowds lining the streets and cheering

:21:26.:21:34.

your name was unbelievable. You are famous! 15 minutes of fame has been

:21:34.:21:41.

fantastic. Thank you very much. Are you allowed to keep the torch?

:21:41.:21:47.

indeed. Everyone will want to see it. It has been such a fabulous day.

:21:47.:21:52.

We have been asking you to send in your pictures. Here is the

:21:52.:22:02.
:22:02.:22:02.

Apology for the loss of subtitles for 43 seconds

:22:02.:23:00.

Wow! The noisiest corporate truck you have ever seen or heard his

:23:00.:23:07.

passing by. You went away for a while. The torch is about five

:23:07.:23:13.

minutes away. It will be here soon. There is another big story today

:23:13.:23:20.

and that is the weather. This is considerably better than yesterday.

:23:20.:23:27.

We had golf-ball sized hail stones or tennis ball sized! They were the

:23:27.:23:34.

size of golf balls. For the whole of June, it fell within one hour

:23:34.:23:38.

yesterday across the East Midlands. It is not confirmed but a possible

:23:38.:23:48.
:23:48.:23:49.

tornado as well. That did cause some damage. Geoff spent the day

:23:49.:23:54.

patching up his damaged Conservatory in Burbage. It bore

:23:54.:23:59.

the brunt of a hailstorm and shattered dozens of windscreens.

:23:59.:24:07.

You have got the best part of 3,000 to get a new roof on S.

:24:07.:24:13.

looked and sounded like a tropical storm. This is mobile-phone footage.

:24:13.:24:19.

The wind has picked up. The trees in the background. Things are

:24:19.:24:25.

flying around - big items. Things are getting drawn out of the house.

:24:25.:24:32.

A tree has fallen on top of a car down the road. This is when a

:24:32.:24:37.

whirlwind happened. Tiles were whipped of the rooms and flung into

:24:37.:24:43.

gardens. This gadget was blown apart by the storm. The roof has

:24:43.:24:50.

gone. -- the garage. It is all still there but it is very wet.

:24:50.:24:55.

When the rain and hail finally stopped, some streets in Leicester

:24:55.:25:00.

and Loughborough were turned into rivers. They had a third of a

:25:00.:25:05.

month's rain fought in a few hours. It is not what to expect in summer,

:25:05.:25:12.

is it? -- rainfall. Back in Burbidge, Geoff and his neighbours

:25:12.:25:21.

of counting the cost of a storm that no one is likely to be get. --

:25:21.:25:27.

forget. We have had some wind here. I have not been able to do her

:25:27.:25:33.

thing with my hair. Much better than yesterday. -- a thing. A

:25:33.:25:39.

continually improving picture? Still the chance of a few showers

:25:39.:25:49.
:25:49.:25:50.

As the showers start to die away throughout the evening, we will see

:25:50.:25:55.

their cloud increasing from the south-west and rain will move up

:25:55.:26:00.

from the south-west was dug once that rain clears, through the

:26:00.:26:04.

morning, we will get a bit of respite from the rain but showers

:26:04.:26:09.

will soon develops throughout tomorrow. A few of the showers will

:26:09.:26:16.

become heavy. The chance of thunder into the afternoon. Not as bad as

:26:16.:26:20.

yesterday. They will move through quite quickly on the strength of

:26:20.:26:26.

the wind. On Sunday, we do start to see the ridge of high pressure

:26:26.:26:30.

building up from the south. That should start to kill off some of

:26:30.:26:36.

the showers that are likely on Sunday. Sunday should be the drier

:26:36.:26:40.

day. It will be quite breezy. We should get away with missing out on

:26:40.:26:47.

a few of the shires as well. The wind is certainly gusting in the

:26:47.:26:55.

centre of Derby. It has gone up or cloudy again. A bit hit and mess

:26:55.:27:03.

with regard to showers. We're waiting for the torch to come.

:27:03.:27:13.
:27:13.:27:16.

Tomorrow it leaves Derby for Birmingham and the West Midlands

:27:16.:27:21.

better returns to a region on Monday. Starting off in Coventry,

:27:21.:27:24.

Northampton, Kettering and Corby before making its way to Market

:27:24.:27:26.
