-- treasured past. There is a first look at | :00:00. | :00:15.
And now the news for the East Midlands, I'm Dominic Heale. First | :00:16. | :00:20.
tonight ` massive cuts that will take ?83 million from counchl | :00:21. | :00:23.
services and mean hundreds of job losses. Line by line, | :00:24. | :00:30.
Nottinghamshire councillors spent the day going through the btdget. In | :00:31. | :00:34.
a moment, we'll hear from the leader of the council, but first S`rah | :00:35. | :00:38.
Teale reports on a day of protest and explains where the cuts will | :00:39. | :00:45.
fall. Protesters were in fine voice this morning outside Nottinghamshire | :00:46. | :00:51.
can in the council. They were here to demonstrate against multh`million | :00:52. | :00:53.
pound cuts in funding to thd Nottingham Playhouse. More protests | :00:54. | :00:58.
came later, opposing the prhnciple of all council cuts. During the | :00:59. | :01:03.
consultation, 38,000 people gave their views, many showing strong | :01:04. | :01:08.
support for the Playhouse, dven famous names joining the calpaign to | :01:09. | :01:14.
save its funding. I think they have made up their minds from thd outset. | :01:15. | :01:18.
And in all honesty I do not think it was a genuine consultation. This is | :01:19. | :01:22.
not about getting them to change their minds but to think about how | :01:23. | :01:27.
they might support us in other ways in future. There's plenty of money | :01:28. | :01:31.
around for tax cuts for the wealthiest people in societx, so why | :01:32. | :01:38.
are we making cuts to the most vulnerable people, who need our care | :01:39. | :01:42.
and support? Amanda's 23`ye`r`old son, Luke, has respite care. The | :01:43. | :01:51.
centre where he attends has had a one`year reprieve from clostre but | :01:52. | :01:55.
it may soon still have to close To lose the centre altogether would be | :01:56. | :01:59.
devastating and to call him out of that environment and put thdm | :02:00. | :02:01.
somewhere else, it is not going to be an easy thing. It is not just | :02:02. | :02:05.
don't be him, it will be other young adults whom it affects. The council | :02:06. | :02:10.
leaders said some of the decisions they had to make where painful and | :02:11. | :02:15.
sickening. Over 120 savings proposals have been decided | :02:16. | :02:20.
including council tax going up % and school dinners increasing by | :02:21. | :02:22.
10p. There will be a reducthon in 10p. There will be a reducthon in | :02:23. | :02:28.
youth centres, closure of some day services and some recycling centres. | :02:29. | :02:33.
And council reserves of ?42 million are being drawn onto fund c`pital | :02:34. | :02:43.
projects like the widening of the A453. There are still millions of | :02:44. | :02:47.
pounds of savings to come, to close the funding gap of ?154 million | :02:48. | :02:55.
Earlier this evening, I askdd council leader Alan Rhodes hf the | :02:56. | :03:02.
cuts were absolutely necess`ry. They were absolutely necessary. Hf I | :03:03. | :03:07.
thought there were other waxs could've done it we could h`ve done | :03:08. | :03:27.
it. There is no alternative for us. What the Prime Minister is saying | :03:28. | :03:31.
this is not reflect the needs of the community in Nottinghamshird or the | :03:32. | :03:35.
level of funding we get compared to some more wealthy authoritids. The | :03:36. | :03:39.
other issue is efficiency is. Are you running an efficient | :03:40. | :03:43.
organisation and could you lake more savings there? There is mord you | :03:44. | :03:48.
could do to find patients is and we'll make sure that there hs no | :03:49. | :03:51.
waste at the front end that we are aware of. And we will look `t that | :03:52. | :04:02.
in the coming weeks and months. Around 200 jobs are going bdcause of | :04:03. | :04:06.
the planned closure of a factory in Derbyshire. The Sandvik Grotp makes | :04:07. | :04:09.
machinery for the mining and construction industries is to shut | :04:10. | :04:11.
its factory at Swadlincote. Operations at the plant in | :04:12. | :04:14.
Derbyshire will be wound down and moved to Northern Ireland. The | :04:15. | :04:17.
company said the decision w`s due to a lack of orders caused by the slow | :04:18. | :04:21.
recovery in global markets. It has been a tough day today. We have made | :04:22. | :04:26.
the announcement of the workforce and given them the opportunhty to go | :04:27. | :04:31.
home and digestive news. We will see them back on Monday then we need to | :04:32. | :04:36.
start a consultation process with the union representation but also | :04:37. | :04:39.
the individuals, to see how best we can support them. Volunteers at food | :04:40. | :04:46.
banks say they're handing ott a growing number of parcels to people | :04:47. | :04:50.
who are in work ` but still can t afford food. Meanwhile, manx food | :04:51. | :04:53.
charities here are reporting their busiest year ever. Jo Healex | :04:54. | :04:56.
reports. Jess works full`tile, but earns little. Something had to give. | :04:57. | :05:01.
I was missing meals so my d`ughter could eat, basically, because things | :05:02. | :05:07.
were getting quite tough. Although it was tough, she didn't thhnk she | :05:08. | :05:11.
could have food parcels, because she works. But so do many peopld who | :05:12. | :05:15.
come here to Ilkeston. It w`s more the people on benefits and | :05:16. | :05:19.
pensioners. But now we've found a massive increase, it has probably | :05:20. | :05:22.
tripled now, in the working sector. So, people who have jobs but still | :05:23. | :05:28.
need food? Yeah. This is a typical food parcel for a single adtlt, to | :05:29. | :05:31.
last them around three days. They, plus couples, who get a bit more, | :05:32. | :05:35.
account for around 70% of the people who come here. And this is ` typical | :05:36. | :05:39.
children's pack, and they account for 27% of all food parcels handed | :05:40. | :05:46.
out here each year. Homeless people account for just 3%. We havd trebled | :05:47. | :05:57.
while we have been doing thhs operation and there is no shgn of | :05:58. | :06:02.
its ceasing, it described every day. This week, a Shadow Minister | :06:03. | :06:05.
visited, and heard they provided 2,500 meals here last year `lone. | :06:06. | :06:10.
Speaking to people, it's a lot of people you would not expect to be | :06:11. | :06:14.
here at a food bank, the majority of which are in work or desper`tely | :06:15. | :06:17.
seeking work. Jess says, if she needed to now, she would go to her | :06:18. | :06:25.
local food bank in Eastwood. It is community is coming together and | :06:26. | :06:28.
helping each other. If you have got something extra, give it, if you | :06:29. | :06:32.
want or need something, takd it And it seems many more people are having | :06:33. | :06:41.
to do just that. That's your news. So, it's goodbye from me ` but with | :06:42. | :06:45.
your weather now, here's Anna Church. We are getting reports that | :06:46. | :06:49.
the Northern lights are vishble here, so we would love to sde your | :06:50. | :06:53.
pictures if you can see thel. It is a cold night with dry conditions and | :06:54. | :06:57.
clear spells. More in the w`y of cloud as we go through the night | :06:58. | :07:01.
itself. And rain pushing in from the south. Low temperatures of two | :07:02. | :07:07.
Celsius. We are in the northern edge of this rain. It might give us some | :07:08. | :07:13.
light snow tomorrow morning on higher ground. Then it all clears | :07:14. | :07:18.
away and it is an improving story as we go into the afternoon. Wd could | :07:19. | :07:24.
see some sunshine before it gets dark with high temperatures of six | :07:25. | :07:30.
Celsius. And the outlook for the next few days, followed | :07:31. | :07:32.
looking too bad at the weekend. Bash Street. I have got some wintry | :07:33. | :07:43.
weather to talk about tonight and that has been a rare occurrence | :07:44. | :07:47.
during this current winter. There will be a touch of frost and it | :07:48. | :07:52.
could lead to icy patches across Northern Ireland and south-west | :07:53. | :07:55.
Scotland. There is snow in the forecast as well. The Northern | :07:56. | :08:00.
lights have been making an appearance in the evening. They had | :08:01. | :08:05. |
