a woman has been arrested after three of her children are found dead

:00:00.3:59:59

at First tonight ` the bungled revenge

:00:00.:00:20.

attack that killed a family of four in Leicester. Good evening and

:00:21.:00:24.

welcome to the programme. The history making season for

:00:25.:00:44.

Leicester. Whatever happened to the student who designed a shoe for the

:00:45.:00:48.

Duchess of Cambridge? The Landsat lies here. `` the ants are lies

:00:49.:00:54.

here. First this evening, a jury's been

:00:55.:01:05.

told how a mother and her three children died in a fire in their

:01:06.:01:09.

home in a bungled revenge arson attack.

:01:10.:01:11.

Nottingham crown court heard the blaze in Leicester was deliberately

:01:12.:01:15.

started by a gang of men who wanted to avenge the death of their friend

:01:16.:01:19.

just hours earlier. But they got the wrong house. Sarah Teale has been in

:01:20.:01:24.

court today and we can join her live now. Sarah this was described today

:01:25.:01:33.

as a tragic case. Yes, it has been. The prosecution barrister Ricahrd

:01:34.:01:36.

Latham QC started outlining the basic details of the case to the

:01:37.:01:40.

jury today and he described it as horrendous. A revenge attack on the

:01:41.:01:45.

wrong house. A sequence of events which started with the murder of one

:01:46.:01:49.

man and ended in the deaths of a completely innocent family in their

:01:50.:01:50.

own home. The fire ripped through the house in

:01:51.:02:04.

the early hours of September 13 last year. Inside, sleep and unaware

:02:05.:02:10.

whether mother and her three children. `` worth the mother. The

:02:11.:02:21.

prosecutor told the murder trial it was a botched arson attack. He said

:02:22.:02:26.

it was part of a revenge plan for the murder just seven hours earlier

:02:27.:02:31.

of 20`year`old football coach, and one. He was stabbed in the back mile

:02:32.:02:37.

away on Kent Street. A gang had witnessed the attack and they

:02:38.:02:44.

believed Abdul Hannan been involved. As retribution, the court

:02:45.:02:54.

heard they intended to set fire to the home. They simply got the wrong

:02:55.:02:58.

house, the jury was told. It was a tragedy. The court heard how petrol

:02:59.:03:05.

had been poured through the letterbox and had been ignited. The

:03:06.:03:09.

fire took hold swiftly and engulfed the stairs. This was the family's

:03:10.:03:17.

only means of escape. A firefighter said it was the worst domestic fire

:03:18.:03:21.

he had seen in 50 years. Despite valiant efforts, nothing could be

:03:22.:03:30.

done to save the family. Their husband and father was in Dublin at

:03:31.:03:36.

the time when he worked as a consultant neurosurgeon. The jury

:03:37.:03:42.

was told he had spoken to his wife and each child individually just

:03:43.:03:45.

before the fire claimed their lives. The gang on trial are all from

:03:46.:04:01.

Leicester. One man is from Leeds. They all deny four counts of murder.

:04:02.:04:07.

To paint you a picture of the scene here at Court one there's a great

:04:08.:04:10.

number of barristers and lawyers. They take up three rows of the

:04:11.:04:14.

court. The prosecution opening is due to last until Friday. Then on

:04:15.:04:19.

Monday the jury will be taken to the Woodhill in Leicester to see for

:04:20.:04:22.

themselves the scene of the fire and the house which is still boarded up.

:04:23.:04:28.

The trial is expected to last six to eight weeks.

:04:29.:04:32.

It's Wednesday night, and you're watching East Midlands Today. Plenty

:04:33.:04:37.

more ahead tonight. Including a look at how the region's

:04:38.:04:40.

been celebrating the birthday of England's favourite bard and St

:04:41.:04:49.

George's Day! Follow your spirit and upon this charge cry, England and St

:04:50.:04:58.

George. Police investigating Madeleine

:04:59.:05:05.

McCann's disappearance say six new incidents have come to light since a

:05:06.:05:11.

special appeal was made last month. Madeleine vanished almost seven

:05:12.:05:14.

years ago in Praia da Luz in Portugal's Algarve region. Police

:05:15.:05:18.

are now looking at 18 potentially`linked cases, where a

:05:19.:05:21.

lone intruder broke into villas in the region. The new incidents

:05:22.:05:26.

include an assault on a 10`year`old in 2005 in Praia de Luz.

:05:27.:05:31.

A Nottinghamshire police officer wrongly convicted of rape has been

:05:32.:05:34.

suspended despite an order to reinstate him. Trevor Gray was

:05:35.:05:39.

sacked and jailed before clearing his name during a retrial. Earlier

:05:40.:05:44.

this month, the Police Appeals Tribunal ruled he could return to

:05:45.:05:47.

his job at Nottinghamshire Police. The Force says he's been suspended

:05:48.:05:51.

from duty pending the outcome of a gross misconduct hearing later this

:05:52.:05:56.

year. Next tonight, the remarkable machine

:05:57.:05:58.

which enables hospital patients to donate their own blood while they're

:05:59.:06:04.

having an operation. The He`mosep device captures blood spilt during

:06:05.:06:07.

surgery, filters it and then returns it to the patient. It's made in

:06:08.:06:14.

Nottinghamshire by a family firm which used its expertise as lace

:06:15.:06:16.

makers to develop it. Julie needed major open`heart

:06:17.:06:24.

surgery. To have it she would normally need blood transfusions but

:06:25.:06:29.

she is a Jehovah witness. Giving blood other than her own is against

:06:30.:06:35.

her beliefs. It was important for me to have the surgery done without

:06:36.:06:38.

anybody else's blood as a transfusion into my body. That is

:06:39.:06:41.

where this machine helps. It is ground`breaking but how does it

:06:42.:06:45.

work? During any procedure, there will be an element of blood loss.

:06:46.:06:51.

You can take this blood, concentrate it in a concentrator bag, pass it

:06:52.:06:55.

into the blood bag and give it to the anaesthetist to transfuse back

:06:56.:07:03.

into the patient. It is extremely useful for patients because they are

:07:04.:07:06.

getting their own blood back and their own clotting factors. In the

:07:07.:07:11.

past, they would have only got red cells and the clotting cells would

:07:12.:07:14.

have been lost. This process is quicker. It could also benefit

:07:15.:07:18.

costs. Across the East Midlands 80,000 people donate thousands of

:07:19.:07:23.

litres of blood. Julie would have needed more than three litres just

:07:24.:07:26.

for her operation but this machine meant she could use her own.

:07:27.:07:31.

Intriguingly, it has been made by a family firm at Kirkby in Ashfield

:07:32.:07:34.

once known for its textiles and lace. It has used their expertise to

:07:35.:07:40.

develop the filters and microscopic meshes needed to help patients like

:07:41.:07:49.

Julie. It is wonderful. The device itself helped my surgery, my

:07:50.:07:54.

recuperation afterwards. She is one of the first patients to use the

:07:55.:08:00.

machine. Doctors in Nottingham are part of its first ever UK trials but

:08:01.:08:03.

interest is growing across the world.

:08:04.:08:09.

Next a safety warning from a fire chief over e`cigarettes. Dave Watson

:08:10.:08:13.

from Leicestershire says that they could explode during battery

:08:14.:08:15.

charging because there's no cut`off point. It comes after an e`cigarette

:08:16.:08:21.

on charge in a woman's car caught fire. Mike O'Sullivan has this

:08:22.:08:33.

report. Kim switched to e`cigarettes after it was left on

:08:34.:08:42.

charge and it exploded. Luckily it was parked up with no one in at the

:08:43.:08:48.

time. I open the door and a load of blacks smoke came out. I looked

:08:49.:08:54.

inside the car and the back`seat was alight. I ran back into the house

:08:55.:08:58.

and got a bowl and filled it up with water and put it out. Kim had bought

:08:59.:09:05.

a e`cigarette kit from a petrol station but was using a different

:09:06.:09:08.

charger and she believes this may have been what caused the fire. A

:09:09.:09:14.

senior fire chief told me he has identified another problem. There

:09:15.:09:17.

seems to be no safety cutout mechanism that prevents them from

:09:18.:09:21.

overheating during charging which causes the battery to overheat and

:09:22.:09:27.

literally explode. Kim is approaching Trading Standards over

:09:28.:09:31.

her concerns of what she claims is a lack of instructions for using

:09:32.:09:38.

e`cigarette kits. I was in shock and it is a nightmare. I don't want

:09:39.:09:42.

anyone else to make the same mistake as I did. Kim has got a courtesy car

:09:43.:09:49.

as her own will now be properly written off. She will be using

:09:50.:09:56.

disposable e`cigarettes cigarettes in future. Shopkeepers in Leicester

:09:57.:09:59.

say they stand to lose thousands of pounds due to a European ban on a

:10:00.:10:04.

special type of mango. These ones in fact.

:10:05.:10:05.

They're Alphonso mangoes which come from India. As of next month they

:10:06.:10:11.

won't be available in the UK after a type of fruit fly was found in some

:10:12.:10:19.

imports. These aren't just any mangoes. They

:10:20.:10:27.

are Alphonso mangoes which are extreme `` extra sweet. They are

:10:28.:10:30.

very popular here and this man is not happy about the ban. I am not

:10:31.:10:38.

happy it is going to be banned. The Alphonso mangoes is and is only

:10:39.:10:43.

eight weeks long but that means big business. He will sell 40,000

:10:44.:10:48.

mangoes every week and he will make just over that two`month period

:10:49.:10:54.

around ?9,000. The band is going to cost him dearly. It will hit us. It

:10:55.:11:01.

will definitely hit us with the mangoes. I was upset about it. It is

:11:02.:11:11.

not just him that will be affected. They are very valuable to grocers,

:11:12.:11:15.

especially those that Salomon wholesale. They helped turnover in a

:11:16.:11:23.

big way. Some businesses can have ?56,000 profit per and and that

:11:24.:11:26.

helps when it comes to the rest of the year. We are going through a bad

:11:27.:11:32.

phase in terms of the retail sector and this is going to be another blow

:11:33.:11:38.

for those businesses. It will be a shame because we look forward to

:11:39.:11:43.

them all year. It will be a shame. I will have to wait until I get to

:11:44.:11:49.

India to have them. I have grown up with the mangoes. He is hoping the

:11:50.:11:55.

ban is overturned. Many of his customers are unhappy they won't be

:11:56.:11:58.

able to get a taste of home on their doorstep.

:11:59.:12:05.

Across the region have been celebrations to mark Saint Georges

:12:06.:12:11.

Day. There've been parades, church bells ringing, even a call for St

:12:12.:12:14.

George's Day to become a national holiday.

:12:15.:12:17.

And to top it all, it's also been Shakepeare's 450th birthday too!

:12:18.:12:20.

James Roberson's been out among the celebrations. There is no sign of

:12:21.:12:37.

any Dragon. The lack of a bad he wasn't going to dampen the spirits

:12:38.:12:42.

of these St George enthusiasts as many set off on a march into old

:12:43.:12:50.

market square. A large crowd enjoy the entertainment before the parade

:12:51.:12:54.

turned up but still no dragon inside. At last, a dragon. Where

:12:55.:13:14.

more appropriate than in St George's Church. It is a small church but it

:13:15.:13:20.

is a beautiful church. It is evolving into the 21st century

:13:21.:13:26.

today. Back in Nottingham, depraved `` the parade arrived. We have

:13:27.:13:33.

heritage here that we are very proud of. We only have eight bank holidays

:13:34.:13:36.

throughout the year and I think there is room for another one. It is

:13:37.:13:44.

our day. We should all celebrate it. Look how many people are here.

:13:45.:13:51.

Everybody celebrates it and it should be a family day. Why not? We

:13:52.:13:58.

celebrate other things so why not this. It is also Shakespeare's 450th

:13:59.:14:05.

birthday today and in Derby, the theatre company wasn't going to let

:14:06.:14:10.

that pass without a cake and a suitable reminder of the day. Follow

:14:11.:14:16.

your spirit and upon this charge cry, God for Harry, England and St

:14:17.:14:30.

George. If in doubt, always have a cake. Still to come ` what happens

:14:31.:14:34.

when you design a shoe that gets picked by the Duchess of Cambridge.

:14:35.:14:37.

Well, it happened to Becka and if you're into your footwear then

:14:38.:14:40.

you're going to be very interested in what she's up to now. All will be

:14:41.:14:44.

revealed later in the programme. Time now for sport and look what we

:14:45.:15:00.

have in the studio tonight. Yes, the Football League Trophy.

:15:01.:15:05.

Fantastic isn't it. What a sight for Leicester City fans tonight. A week

:15:06.:15:08.

on Saturday they will see their team lift this stunning trophy at the

:15:09.:15:11.

King Power stadium after a history making, magical season. Last night

:15:12.:15:17.

in Bolton they clinched the Championship title in style, as

:15:18.:15:19.

Kirsty Edwards reports. Champions of the Championship. They

:15:20.:15:39.

have done it. Huge celebrations on a night that saw a great goal secure a

:15:40.:15:48.

memorable win. It is a beauty. It is into the top corner. It is the gold

:15:49.:15:55.

to cram the championships. Lord `` Lloyd Dyer got the goal. The party

:15:56.:16:07.

could really begin. It is our year, it is our club, it is champions

:16:08.:16:13.

2014. It is destination Premier League. Everyone knows we have

:16:14.:16:27.

talked about it a lot. The spirit that we have is a team and also the

:16:28.:16:33.

spirit of the club, everyone was hurting from last season and

:16:34.:16:37.

everyone has come back in with a great man Teletubby. It is a great

:16:38.:16:41.

thing for the entire club but most of all, for the fans. There will be

:16:42.:16:46.

another chance for the players and fans to party on May the 5th bank

:16:47.:16:50.

holiday Monday. Details have not been revealed yet but that is when

:16:51.:16:55.

official celebrations will take place. `` May five. We have had a

:16:56.:17:03.

fabulous following and the fans here tonight will enjoy the experience

:17:04.:17:08.

and quite rightly so. We have gone over the line with two games to go.

:17:09.:17:14.

I cannot complain. It is a bit special. Not only is Premier League

:17:15.:17:23.

football come to Leicester, this city is now home to the football

:17:24.:17:25.

league champions. Well joining me now is two special

:17:26.:17:43.

guests Leicester City club ambassador Alan Birchenall and

:17:44.:17:45.

official club historian John Hutchinson. Thank you both for

:17:46.:17:56.

joining us tonight. Well first Birch look at these pictures. To go up

:17:57.:18:04.

with six games to go and win the title with two games left is

:18:05.:18:12.

incredible. It has been fantastic. That is why they have worked so hard

:18:13.:18:16.

this season. You can see them enjoying themselves there. The lads

:18:17.:18:21.

have got hold of him. They will have to watch his knees! It has been a

:18:22.:18:30.

tremendous season for the lads. How good is this team? This team proves

:18:31.:18:42.

it. This is probably the best squad I have known in 40 years. What about

:18:43.:18:47.

the goal last night that clinched the title. Lloyd Dyer, quite fitting

:18:48.:18:55.

because he is one of Nigel Pearson's first signings. Fantastic

:18:56.:19:02.

goal. If you can unleash something like that, it was a rocket. It was

:19:03.:19:09.

well deserved. It is just fantastic for the lads. John, we must look at

:19:10.:19:16.

the stats. Leicester have broken records all season. It is a national

:19:17.:19:27.

record. They have won 29 goals `` games all season. They have 96

:19:28.:19:31.

points, that is a club record. They have still got two games to go. They

:19:32.:19:38.

have gone 12 games consecutively without defeat and that is a club

:19:39.:19:44.

record. There is still two games to go. You could go on and on. You

:19:45.:19:52.

should be a teacher. What about the win percentage for Nigel Pearson.

:19:53.:19:57.

Statistically, he is your best ever manager. Nigel is statistically the

:19:58.:20:05.

most impressive manager. He has got a win percentage of over 50%. No

:20:06.:20:11.

other manager has come near that. Frank got them up in 1971 and got

:20:12.:20:21.

46%. Martin O'Neill, 38%. Nigel is statistically the most successful

:20:22.:20:23.

manager in the whole history of the club. Do you want to get your hands

:20:24.:20:36.

on the trophy but I want Wes to be the first person to touch the

:20:37.:20:41.

trophy. They will get to touch the trophy in ten days' time. It will be

:20:42.:20:50.

a fantastic celebration. Statistically, we must be the best

:20:51.:20:54.

programme. Time now to cast your mind back to March 2012 when the

:20:55.:20:57.

Queen and the Duchess of Cambridge came to Leicester on the first stop

:20:58.:21:01.

of the Jubilee celebrations. It was a momentous occasion for many people

:21:02.:21:04.

but perhaps for none more so than a student who had entered her

:21:05.:21:07.

university's competition, and won the chance to make a shoe fit for a

:21:08.:21:10.

princess! But once your design is picked by

:21:11.:21:13.

royalty and you finish your degree, what happens next? We tracked

:21:14.:21:19.

Rebecca Hunt down to find out. Two years ago in celebration of the

:21:20.:21:23.

Jubilee, the Duchess of Cambridge chose a shoe that have been designed

:21:24.:21:30.

by a young De Montfort student. It means everything. It is incredible.

:21:31.:21:36.

I am shocked. Shocked she was, but that they paved the way to today's

:21:37.:21:40.

internship at one of the Duchess's favourite designers. We are inside

:21:41.:21:42.

LK Bennett's headquarters in central London and Becka is on the top

:21:43.:21:44.

floor. When you look back on that day where

:21:45.:21:56.

the Duchess of Cambridge and the Queen came to the University, would

:21:57.:22:01.

you ever forget that? It was such a whirlwind. It was a crazy day. I

:22:02.:22:09.

remember it. It was a really memorable day and I don't think I

:22:10.:22:13.

will ever forget that one. What about the shoe? We got a pair made

:22:14.:22:17.

up. I have got a pair that I can keep and the prototype I made has

:22:18.:22:20.

been displayed in Northampton Machine Museum. `` shoe museum. Will

:22:21.:22:31.

it ever be made into a shoe for people to buy? No, out of respect

:22:32.:22:35.

for the Duchess, that would never happen. It was designed especially

:22:36.:22:38.

for her. What about your future? Where will you see yourself? The

:22:39.:22:42.

future for me? I am here for a year until September and after that, we

:22:43.:22:46.

will have to wait and see. My dream is to have my own line.

:22:47.:22:53.

I know Becka would love to have her own line in the future. Is that

:22:54.:23:01.

something that you think might become a reality? I think there is

:23:02.:23:11.

somethingmight happen and she is very enthusiastic and very talented

:23:12.:23:15.

and she truly believes in what she's doing. I hope that this experience

:23:16.:23:19.

is going to help a lot along the path. It is probably just a case of

:23:20.:23:24.

watch this space. What tips did you pick up?

:23:25.:23:36.

Top tip this summer is flats. All of you have completely ignored

:23:37.:23:39.

that. With the weather, it may be the

:23:40.:23:44.

weather for wellingtons. We are expecting some April showers.

:23:45.:23:53.

With some sunny spells, you can get out and about with your camera. We

:23:54.:23:59.

have this weather front that is starting to push in and it gives us

:24:00.:24:05.

an increasing cloud. The rain is now starting to push in. Outbreaks of

:24:06.:24:12.

rain may be heavy at times. It clears away to the East eventually.

:24:13.:24:17.

Behind it, we see the cloud breaking towards the West and we may see a

:24:18.:24:22.

little bit of mist and fog in places. Temperatures down to eight

:24:23.:24:29.

Celsius. The cloud that is with us first thing tends to break up quite

:24:30.:24:34.

slowly through the morning but eventually we will see some decent

:24:35.:24:37.

spells of sunshine as we go into the afternoon. What you will notice is a

:24:38.:24:42.

fuchsia hours starting to develop. These will be particularly sharp. If

:24:43.:24:49.

you get caught out, watch out for them. Temperatures around 16 Celsius

:24:50.:24:54.

in the sunshine so still feeling quite pleasant. On Friday, we have

:24:55.:24:59.

low`pressure out to the east of us. It is a mostly dry day before rain

:25:00.:25:04.

pushes in. This area of low pressure starts to move on as we go into the

:25:05.:25:09.

weekend and what that will do is give us sunshine and showers for

:25:10.:25:14.

both Saturday and Sunday but decent spiny `` sunny spells at time. Not

:25:15.:25:21.

too bad. April showers. It may be a reason to wear flat

:25:22.:25:25.

shoes. She will be back in heels we view at

:25:26.:25:28.
