Tonight a former supermarket cashier goes on trial accused | :00:08. | :00:11.
And Asda worker is accused of preparing to fight for a terrorist | :00:12. | :00:24.
group. Also tonight, Farewell of Leicester. The family-owned | :00:25. | :00:26.
department store is to close in March. We are making significant | :00:27. | :00:33.
losses, and it really doesn't make any more business sense to try and | :00:34. | :00:39.
continue. Plus the chairman of the Derbyshire -based Sports Direct | :00:40. | :00:40.
survives a second shareholder revolt. | :00:41. | :00:45.
And racing ahead, the hobby that has turned into a fully flourishing | :00:46. | :00:47.
international business. Good evening, and welcome to | :00:48. | :01:02.
the programme, with Dominic Heale, First tonight, a supermarket cashier | :01:03. | :01:05.
has gone on trial accused of preparing to fight | :01:06. | :01:08.
for a terrorist group. Ryan Counsell's a Muslim convert | :01:09. | :01:10.
who worked at an ASDA The jury heard that he bought | :01:11. | :01:12.
flights and military equipment, and downloaded | :01:13. | :01:16.
an Al-Qaeda bomb-making guide. Our Social Affairs Correspondent, | :01:17. | :01:19.
Jeremy Ball, has been following the case at Woolwich Crown Court | :01:20. | :01:23.
in South East London. We heard he was in the advanced | :01:24. | :01:26.
stages of planning to travel To join and fight for a terrorist | :01:27. | :01:34.
group who've pledged allegiance The prosecution said Ryan Counsell | :01:35. | :01:38.
had searched online for cheap He'd eventually booked | :01:39. | :01:46.
a ticket from Heathrow. And he was due to fly out only two | :01:47. | :01:53.
days after his arrest, last July. So what do we know | :01:54. | :01:57.
about Ryan Counsell? He's 28, he's a Muslim convert | :01:58. | :01:59.
and he's married with a young child. He worked here, on the tills | :02:00. | :02:02.
in ASDA at Hyson Green in Nottingham, and he lived just | :02:03. | :02:07.
a few streets away. When the police raided his home, | :02:08. | :02:12.
they found a mass of extremist material, including | :02:13. | :02:15.
Islamic State beheading videos. And an Al-Qaeda article, headed make | :02:16. | :02:18.
a bomb in the kitchen of your Mom. They also found military equipment | :02:19. | :02:21.
and clothing designed to protect Some of it was found in his child's | :02:22. | :02:25.
bedroom packed in a suitcase. Ryan Counsell told the police | :02:26. | :02:34.
that he was going to He said those extremist documents | :02:35. | :02:40.
were academic research As for that military equipment, | :02:41. | :02:47.
he said that's for a game called Airsoft that's | :02:48. | :02:54.
similar to paintballing. And he's denied four | :02:55. | :02:56.
separate terrorism charges. It's been announced today | :02:57. | :03:03.
that the department store Fenwick in Leicester is to close | :03:04. | :03:06.
with the loss of 97 jobs. The closure, expected in March, | :03:07. | :03:08.
is being blamed on falling footfall in the area of the store, | :03:09. | :03:13.
as shoppers move to newer centres Our reporter Amy Harris | :03:14. | :03:18.
is in Leicester tonight for us. It is. After more than 100 years on | :03:19. | :03:39.
this very corner it has become more than just a store, it's a much loved | :03:40. | :03:44.
Leicester landmark. Today's news hasn't just shocked and saddened | :03:45. | :03:48.
those who work here, but those who have shopped here over the years. | :03:49. | :03:53.
One user simply says on Facebook, I can't imagine going into town and | :03:54. | :03:58.
not pupping into Fenwicks. Generations have done just that | :03:59. | :04:01.
since it opened under a different name in Victorian times. A Leicester | :04:02. | :04:08.
shopping institution, priding itself on quality and reliability for over | :04:09. | :04:14.
one century. Built in 1890 Asda store Joseph Johnson and Coe limited | :04:15. | :04:21.
and taken over by Fenwicks in 1962. Today came the announcement it could | :04:22. | :04:24.
close as soon as March, a sad day for the family who run it. Over the | :04:25. | :04:29.
years, you know, we have grown to love Leicester, and the people of | :04:30. | :04:34.
Leicester, and the people who work for us, who are already dedicated. | :04:35. | :04:42.
This is a real sadness. This is one of 11 stores in a nationwide chain | :04:43. | :04:46.
and it employs 97 people. They were given the bad news this morning, use | :04:47. | :04:51.
that for some could end a career spanning decades. I have been store | :04:52. | :04:56.
director for 20 years and many members of staff have been a lot | :04:57. | :05:01.
longer than 20 years. We have tried our hardest, it's such a sad day. He | :05:02. | :05:08.
and the Fenwicks family say the rise of online shopping, I challenge | :05:09. | :05:12.
facing all high street retailers, has affected trade, but so is its | :05:13. | :05:23.
this was a thriving retail area but shopping habits have changed. Now | :05:24. | :05:25.
customers are heading to different centres like high cross and Fosse | :05:26. | :05:28.
Park on the outskirts of the city. It is, of course, not the first big | :05:29. | :05:31.
high-street casualty, leaving customers feeling a sense of loss | :05:32. | :05:35.
again. It is the breadth of stuff on the furniture in the clothing that | :05:36. | :05:40.
we mostly use so I will be sorry to see another big player in the middle | :05:41. | :05:44.
go. I think it is a great shame, it is a lovely building as well. You | :05:45. | :05:47.
don't expect someone like that to close their doors as they have, or | :05:48. | :05:55.
they are going to. Yes, it is sad and sad for this street. The | :05:56. | :05:57.
high-street is under more pressure than ever to get people through the | :05:58. | :06:01.
doors and spending. Fenwicks is now changing the way it does business | :06:02. | :06:05.
and about to provide a new online offering. In this store a new | :06:06. | :06:08.
consultation is underway but those in charge say closure is a berry | :06:09. | :06:16.
real possibility. -- a very real possibility. It is an announcement | :06:17. | :06:19.
that nobody wanted to make an day nobody wanted to see, but you get | :06:20. | :06:24.
the sense that those in charge feel that this area has been ignored and | :06:25. | :06:28.
neglected perhaps. I counted along this street behind me four empty | :06:29. | :06:33.
premises. In a statement today the City Council said they are sorry to | :06:34. | :06:36.
hear of the plans to close and the area around the store is seeing | :06:37. | :06:40.
considerable investment. They go on to say that they are confident new | :06:41. | :06:46.
uses will be found for the beautiful building and that the area will | :06:47. | :06:51.
continue to thrive. Thank you very much indeed. What a | :06:52. | :06:55.
shame. It is a real landmark in Leicester. If you value Paul Paton | :06:56. | :06:59.
because you can always find something to get. | :07:00. | :07:02.
Let's hope they find something decent to go in the building. | :07:03. | :07:04.
And if you, too, have any views on the closure | :07:05. | :07:07.
of Fenwicks in Leicester, please go to our Facebook page. | :07:08. | :07:09.
Still to come this evening: The nuts and bolts of doing business | :07:10. | :07:15.
We visit a firm that makes sports car kits. | :07:16. | :07:23.
And a month of challenges, why Derby Museum staff are joining 64 million | :07:24. | :07:27.
artists in learning to be creative. The chairman of Derbyshire-based | :07:28. | :07:35.
Sports Direct has survived a second A special meeting took place today | :07:36. | :07:37.
to vote on whether Keith Hellawell A number of independent shareholders | :07:38. | :07:43.
had demanded he stand down after the company came under fire | :07:44. | :07:50.
for its working practices In the event he was | :07:51. | :07:54.
comfortably re-elected. It was last September 's | :07:55. | :08:09.
inconclusive AGM which triggered this second chance for independent | :08:10. | :08:14.
shareholders to try and topple the chairman of Sports Direct. Then more | :08:15. | :08:17.
than half of them voted against the re-election of Keith Halliwell, seen | :08:18. | :08:21.
here on the left, when new rules -based was obliged to face another | :08:22. | :08:26.
vote today. It has been a tumultuous 18 months since dreadful working | :08:27. | :08:29.
conditions were uncovered by the BBC. A Commons committee condemned | :08:30. | :08:33.
them as appalling and accused sports Direct of not treating it staff like | :08:34. | :08:38.
humans. Many shareholders demanded swift improvements, | :08:39. | :08:49.
better governance and a new chairman. The re-election of Mr | :08:50. | :08:52.
Halliwell didn't come as a surprise. 54% of independent shareholders | :08:53. | :08:54.
voted against him but he got the backing of almost 81% of all | :08:55. | :08:56.
shareholders, including Mike Ashley who owns 55% of the company. After | :08:57. | :08:59.
the vote Mike Ashley said Keith has my full backing and the unanimous | :09:00. | :09:03.
support of the board. I know that many of those who voted against | :09:04. | :09:07.
Keith Hackett knowledge we have made positive progress since the AGM. | :09:08. | :09:13.
Shareholders have been concerned for some time that the leadership of | :09:14. | :09:17.
Sports Direct has not ensured that the Sports Direct practices are fit | :09:18. | :09:20.
for the 21st century. It is very unusual to see this level of voting | :09:21. | :09:26.
against any individual director and I think it is time that the company | :09:27. | :09:30.
really listened to what the shareholders are saying and realised | :09:31. | :09:33.
that Mike Ashley is the entrepreneur behind the brand but there are other | :09:34. | :09:37.
shareholders out there who have a voice and an opinion and are very | :09:38. | :09:43.
concerned. The 74-year-old who was a Chief Constable Matt Baggott been | :09:44. | :09:47.
chairman since 2009, had already said he would resign at this years | :09:48. | :09:51.
AGM if he fails to gain shareholder approval then. | :09:52. | :09:59.
You are watching East Midlands today and in other news:... | :10:00. | :10:02.
The RSPCA says it's investigating after the body of a horse was found | :10:03. | :10:05.
It was discovered last night by a woman walking her | :10:06. | :10:09.
dog near Watchwood car park in Calverton. | :10:10. | :10:11.
The RSPCA say it appears to have been dumped by someone and they're | :10:12. | :10:14.
asking for the public's help to find out who owns it. | :10:15. | :10:16.
A local charity, Help for Horses, is also offering a ?2,000 | :10:17. | :10:19.
The company that took over S foods in Derby has created more than 2000 | :10:20. | :10:45.
jobs. 300 people lost their jobs there but now the City Council says | :10:46. | :10:48.
that millions of pounds have been invested in the side that started | :10:49. | :10:51.
manufacturing again in April last year. | :10:52. | :10:53.
An operation which saw armed police patrolling parts of Leicestershire, | :10:54. | :10:56.
Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire has come to an end. | :10:57. | :10:57.
It was in response to the suspected terrorist attack on a Christmas | :10:58. | :11:00.
market in Berlin, which left 12 people dead. | :11:01. | :11:02.
The patrols here included crowded spaces, such as shopping | :11:03. | :11:05.
centres and sports venues, and lasted for two weeks. | :11:06. | :11:07.
The terror threat level to the UK remains at severe. | :11:08. | :11:15.
We're less than a week into 2017, but the New Year will bring a fresh | :11:16. | :11:21.
set of challenges for businesses in the East Midlands. | :11:22. | :11:25.
The government says that by the end of March, | :11:26. | :11:28.
Britain will have begun the process of leaving the European Union. | :11:29. | :11:33.
Companies that export will be keeping a particularly close eye | :11:34. | :11:35.
Our political reporter, Peter Saull, has spent the day at a small car | :11:36. | :11:41.
Designed and built in the Nottinghamshire countryside, | :11:42. | :11:48.
2016 saw record sales of new cars and this manufacturer is hoping | :11:49. | :11:53.
Not many people have heard of us at the minute but the brand, | :11:54. | :12:01.
We want to be seen and known world wide with some of the major | :12:02. | :12:08.
All of these cars are manufactured right here in Ollerton | :12:09. | :12:19.
and sent all over the world, so what potential problems | :12:20. | :12:24.
Will it be a comfortable ride for businesses like these? | :12:25. | :12:27.
The referendum divided the two directors here. | :12:28. | :12:31.
Our exports are up which are really keen about, | :12:32. | :12:34.
We really are showing concerns now about what will happen in Europe | :12:35. | :12:40.
in the next couple of years and I think that this is the time | :12:41. | :12:45.
that the government has to tell us what is going to happen. | :12:46. | :12:48.
Today a chance to put those concerns to the local MP who is also | :12:49. | :12:51.
What we can't do is scupper our negotiating hand so the government | :12:52. | :12:56.
has to go and get the best deal it possibly can | :12:57. | :12:59.
and at that point then, you know, we can then | :13:00. | :13:01.
go and trade not only with our European | :13:02. | :13:03.
colleagues hopefully but colleagues all over the world | :13:04. | :13:05.
so it is about getting the best deal for these companies and we can't do | :13:06. | :13:09.
that by announcing what we're trying to achieve before we go | :13:10. | :13:11.
In less than three months' time Britain will embark on the most | :13:12. | :13:15.
complex negotiations in living memory. | :13:16. | :13:17.
The chequered flag will be waved on our membership of the EU but even | :13:18. | :13:20.
the Prime Minister admits there will be bumps on the road. | :13:21. | :13:28.
A campaign's started to honour munition workers | :13:29. | :13:30.
during World War I and II, including those who | :13:31. | :13:32.
Staff at the Nottingham factory were amongst those | :13:33. | :13:40.
known as the Canary Girls because the toxic chemicals | :13:41. | :13:43.
Nearly 140 were killed in an explosion there in 1918, | :13:44. | :13:47.
The campaign is being led by Conservative MP, Bill Wiggin, | :13:48. | :13:53.
who's asking for a special veteran's badge to honour their role | :13:54. | :13:56.
A Nottinghamshire police dog has received a Crown Court Commendation | :13:57. | :14:05.
for its role in tracking a man who'd fled from officers. | :14:06. | :14:09.
Akie, who's three and a half years old, tracked the man | :14:10. | :14:11.
for more than a mile, through woods and over train tracks. | :14:12. | :14:14.
His handler, PC Mark Haywood, says he's incredibly proud | :14:15. | :14:16.
of the German Shepherd, and he'll be getting | :14:17. | :14:18.
Leicestershire's largest food manufacturer has bought | :14:19. | :14:27.
the West Cornwall Pasty Company in what's understood to be | :14:28. | :14:29.
Samworth Brothers, based in Melton Mowbrary, already | :14:30. | :14:35.
The figure for this new deal hasn't been disclosed, | :14:36. | :14:41.
but the company is reassuring workers at the factory in Truro | :14:42. | :14:44.
Now, what did you do today that was purely creative? | :14:45. | :14:50.
Well, staff at one of our museums are taking on a challenge all this | :14:51. | :14:57.
month to think outside the box for ten minutes a day. | :14:58. | :15:02.
Yes, Derby Museum is the only one in the country that's been asked | :15:03. | :15:05.
to work with a group called 64 Million Artists who want | :15:06. | :15:10.
to encourage all 64 million of us in the UK to release | :15:11. | :15:13.
We sent along our very own stick-in-the-mud | :15:14. | :15:19.
Taking on the challenge, staff at Derby Museum | :15:20. | :15:30.
replicate an early one, building a tower. | :15:31. | :15:40.
On January 1st people from the Museum and across Britain | :15:41. | :15:48.
tried their hand at challenge one from the group 64 Million Artists, | :15:49. | :15:53.
creating headlines in just ten minutes. | :15:54. | :15:55.
We are encouraging people and ourselves to think | :15:56. | :15:57.
about what we have done when we have completed the challenge, | :15:58. | :15:59.
share and reinforce and celebrate what we have been | :16:00. | :16:01.
doing as a kind of team-building exercise really. | :16:02. | :16:11.
By January 3rd they were drawing what they saw out of the window. | :16:12. | :16:14.
Christmas lights are still around and yesterday the National challenge | :16:15. | :16:16.
was to record things around you, as long as they were | :16:17. | :16:19.
The fifth text in my phone was from my friend Neal. | :16:20. | :16:24.
I messaged him on the way up to Northumberland couple of days ago | :16:25. | :16:27.
and his response was I'm so excited I might explode. | :16:28. | :16:29.
Today the challenge was to write a poem in ten minutes, using | :16:30. | :16:34.
Writing about his new dog, Tony says he wants more people | :16:35. | :16:38.
Derby Museum is the only museum as far as we know that is officially | :16:39. | :16:44.
involved the project so we very much believe that public participation | :16:45. | :16:47.
It's about doing something joyful or new and interesting | :16:48. | :16:51.
Not worrying about what the end result might be, it doesn't have | :16:52. | :16:55.
be perfect, but this is going on television of course. | :16:56. | :16:57.
Ten minutes, five minutes together in the morning to do something | :16:58. | :17:04.
like this is really setting up the day. | :17:05. | :17:06.
Day three, draw what you see out of your window. | :17:07. | :17:19.
Day five, the poetry challenge, and what will day six, | :17:20. | :17:28.
seven, eight, nine, ten, 11 bring? | :17:29. | :17:30.
They want you, one of the 64 million artists in the country to join in. | :17:31. | :17:36.
That was almost like a poem. It was a power. I wrote a poem about | :17:37. | :17:42.
Dominik before the programme but I'm not allowed to breed. Let's not go | :17:43. | :17:43.
there. And if you do want to join | :17:44. | :17:45.
in, wherever you are in the East Midlands, | :17:46. | :17:48.
then have a look at Derby Museum's On last night's programme we briefly | :17:49. | :17:50.
featured some breathtaking images of the Earth's stratosphere, | :17:51. | :17:58.
captured by physics students from the University | :17:59. | :17:59.
of Leicester using a high And they captured the attention | :18:00. | :18:01.
of many of our viewers. So, as requested, here's another | :18:02. | :18:07.
look at the Earth from on high. The students' unmanned balloon | :18:08. | :18:11.
and onboard equipment reached an altitude of more | :18:12. | :18:14.
than 23 kilometres. The flight lasted just | :18:15. | :18:18.
over an hour and a half. The students say they're relieved | :18:19. | :18:20.
that the balloon and its content returned to Earth undamaged, | :18:21. | :18:24.
and they're now busy assessing We got all the electronics that | :18:25. | :18:39.
would prove worked at that altitude and we had cameras working on | :18:40. | :18:42.
telemetry got pressure data and lovely footage and also a stepping | :18:43. | :18:46.
stone to progress to the next flight. Absolutely brilliant. Kay | :18:47. | :18:51.
mentioned last night she would have liked to go up in it but there is a | :18:52. | :18:53.
reason it was unmanned. 23 kilometres up the ambient | :18:54. | :18:55.
temperature's around And coming down would | :18:56. | :18:58.
have been a bit scary - the payload hit 100 miles an hour | :18:59. | :19:01.
as it plummeted back to Earth. She had a lucky escape really! She | :19:02. | :19:14.
may be rethinking that one. Now back down to earth with a bump. | :19:15. | :19:20.
Yes, I think Forest fans are firmly earthbound. | :19:21. | :19:21.
First, sources close to the Americans buying | :19:22. | :19:23.
Nottingham Forest want to know the reasons for a delay | :19:24. | :19:26.
The BBC understands the USA consortium led by John Jay Moores. | :19:27. | :19:35.
Was ready to finalise the deal but the money to buy the club was in the | :19:36. | :19:43.
bank and available but Jane Moores and his team are waiting from sign | :19:44. | :19:47.
off from the current owner who has been unavailable for comment. | :19:48. | :19:49.
On to Notts County, another club in flux, | :19:50. | :19:51.
and the man who has taken chargen there, for now at least. | :19:52. | :19:54.
Alan Smith the former England international, | :19:55. | :19:55.
Manchester United and Leeds star is caretaker boss at Meadow Lane | :19:56. | :19:58.
for their game against Morecambe this weekend. | :19:59. | :20:00.
It has to be one of the hottest seats in football management. 11 | :20:01. | :20:11.
bosses in the last seven years have tried and failed to succeed here at | :20:12. | :20:16.
Meadow Lane. John Sheridan was sacked on Monday, paying the price | :20:17. | :20:19.
for a dreadful run of form. Nine successive defeats left the club | :20:20. | :20:22.
just one point above the drop zone. Plenty of sympathy for him from the | :20:23. | :20:27.
man who has taken over. Some people have the perception that players | :20:28. | :20:30.
don't carry the can or they don't feel like they are bothered about | :20:31. | :20:40.
what's going on or if the manager gets the sack they think it is all | :20:41. | :20:43.
right, but no one wants a manager sacked what you one of their | :20:44. | :20:45.
players. Everyone does have a tinge of regret and obviously | :20:46. | :20:47.
disappointment and feel that maybe they have let him down. Happiest in | :20:48. | :20:50.
the dressing room Smith admits he is not ready for full-time management | :20:51. | :20:54.
but is desperate to do something or anything to help. They have been | :20:55. | :20:57.
going through a rough spell for a number of seasons, not just this | :20:58. | :21:01.
season last season but we value the supported you can always see good | :21:02. | :21:07.
players always confident. No one can put a finger on it and it may not be | :21:08. | :21:11.
the right time for me to come and take over but there are people who I | :21:12. | :21:14.
respect him enough that it makes me want to do it. Here we go. The | :21:15. | :21:21.
club's new owner will decide who gets the management job long-term, | :21:22. | :21:24.
but with the club is very future in the football league hanging in the | :21:25. | :21:28.
balance, now is the time for Notts County to finally get this right. | :21:29. | :21:31.
Around our other clubs, it's all about the transfer window. | :21:32. | :21:33.
At Leicester City they haven't hung about, signing midfielder | :21:34. | :21:35.
Wilfred Ndidi from Genk two days ago. | :21:36. | :21:39.
And today manager Claudio Ranieri confirmed he's available | :21:40. | :21:43.
He is a very impressive player with a great future. He jumps very well | :21:44. | :21:57.
to the head and he moves the ball quickly and he recovers a lot of | :21:58. | :22:03.
balls. We follow him a lot and we hope he's very fast that he can | :22:04. | :22:08.
impress all of our fans. Meanwhile Derby County say | :22:09. | :22:09.
they're waiting on a reply from Nottingham Forest | :22:10. | :22:11.
to their latest bid In the meantime they've brought in | :22:12. | :22:13.
Belgian Under-21 Midfielder Julien He'll help cover the key | :22:14. | :22:17.
controlling midfield role. I know him and I watched him when I | :22:18. | :22:32.
was in Holland. The good footballer and he is used to that position. He | :22:33. | :22:36.
has got experience there and unfortunately not quite got the | :22:37. | :22:40.
games at Middlesbrough but they have kindly let us have him until the end | :22:41. | :22:45.
of the season. If you want a little bit more on our main story that | :22:46. | :22:48.
Nottingham Forest, go to their Facebook page and there is a long | :22:49. | :22:55.
discussion there I'm picking more of that detail. BBC Nottingham sport | :22:56. | :22:57.

there is a bit of a change to the weather with plenty of cloud around | :26:08. | :26:11.
and outbreaks of rain to look out for in the afternoon. First of all, | :26:12. | :26:15.
through tonight there are lots of clear skies in the first part of the | :26:16. | :26:18.
night so I think we will see a widespread frost developing | :26:19. | :26:49.
with patches of freezing fog to look out for as well. Temperatures | :26:50. | :26:52.
falling below freezing and cooler in the countryside. This weather front | :26:53. | :26:54.
arrives from the north-western brings in a lot of cloud. It will | :26:55. | :26:59.
pick up the breeze as well so I don't think patches of folk will | :27:00. | :27:03.
last very long. Patchy rain into the afternoon as well. Temperature that | :27:04. | :27:06.

temperatures will creep up on temperatures stay milder. As we move | :27:20. | :27:22.

move into Monday similar temperatures, what we will see | :27:39. | :27:41.
