It's 6:35pm - you're watching East Midlands Today.

:00:00.:00:00.

Tonight - the reaction here as the PM calls a snap

:00:00.:00:00.

The East Midlands will be a key election battle ground.

:00:00.:00:11.

But was Theresa May right to call it?

:00:12.:00:13.

Well, I think it about time we had one.

:00:14.:00:18.

I don't think it was the right action.

:00:19.:00:20.

All the build-up from the stadium, with Leicester on the brink

:00:21.:00:35.

And I'm soaking up the atmosphere with the fans ahead of Leicester's

:00:36.:00:39.

Good evening, welcome to Tuesday's programme

:00:40.:00:55.

with Dominic Heale and me, Anne Davies.

:00:56.:00:56.

For the second time in less than 12 months, the country

:00:57.:01:01.

The snap election on June the 8th will throw the spotlight

:01:02.:01:05.

onto the East Midlands once again, as a key political battleground.

:01:06.:01:10.

Well, this is how the political map looks at the moment.

:01:11.:01:13.

Two years ago, the Conservatives took 18 seats, mainly

:01:14.:01:16.

in the more rural areas, while Labour's power lay

:01:17.:01:21.

in the cities and former mining districts, with 14 MPs.

:01:22.:01:23.

The Lib Dems failed to make an impression.

:01:24.:01:25.

On the streets of Nottingham and Leicester today,

:01:26.:01:27.

people gave their reaction to the unexpected election in just

:01:28.:01:30.

Well, I think it's about time we had one.

:01:31.:01:44.

I didn't think there would be one so soon.

:01:45.:01:49.

I just read one headline that said, a snap annihilation

:01:50.:01:51.

That's probably what they're going with.

:01:52.:01:55.

One vote is one vote and to go through it all again

:01:56.:01:59.

is going to confuse people, so I think it shouldn't

:02:00.:02:02.

Everybody in their lives, they need change.

:02:03.:02:07.

I don't think it was the right action.

:02:08.:02:13.

I've only just seen it on the train so it's a bit of a shock.

:02:14.:02:22.

Anyone that was leading anything, a business or a country,

:02:23.:02:26.

would want to have a mandate and I think that's

:02:27.:02:29.

Well, she wasn't really elected, was she?

:02:30.:02:32.

She was put in there, so this will show how popular she is.

:02:33.:02:37.

I voted for Brexit and I will vote again.

:02:38.:02:45.

I think it's a really good tactic and it's a guaranteed win, isn't it?

:02:46.:02:51.

The Prime Minister's announcement seems to have caught

:02:52.:02:53.

After she repeatedly said it was not an option she's changed her mind

:02:54.:02:58.

Our political editor Tony Roe has been gauging reaction from our MPs

:02:59.:03:04.

to what is another tumultuous day in the world of politics.

:03:05.:03:09.

At the end of last week, I was out filming with the Tory party

:03:10.:03:18.

The Derbyshire Dales MP was pretty relaxed,

:03:19.:03:21.

with time to stuff letterboxes with local election leaflets.

:03:22.:03:23.

His life might just become a little busier over the next six weeks.

:03:24.:03:26.

I was on the phone to another MP who was on College Green preparing

:03:27.:03:31.

for a media photo call on the London Marathon

:03:32.:03:33.

when news came through about the Prime Ministers announcement.

:03:34.:03:39.

The camera crews were suddenly diverted and sent to Downing Street,

:03:40.:03:44.

leaving MPs stranded in their running gear.

:03:45.:03:47.

Now MPs in the East Midlands who'll be running for Oarliament have

:03:48.:03:50.

On social media Anna Soubry, the Broxtowe Conservative,

:03:51.:03:53.

called the Prime Minister decision brave and principled.

:03:54.:03:57.

And she said winning the general election would give

:03:58.:03:59.

the PM a mandate she needs for the Brexit negotiations.

:04:00.:04:03.

On the other hand, Lilian Greenwood called it a chance to, quote,

:04:04.:04:07.

Bring it on, says the Labour MP for Nottingham South.

:04:08.:04:14.

And Jon Ashworth, the Shadow Health Secretary and Leicester South MP,

:04:15.:04:23.

sent us a text which indicates that Labour want to campaign

:04:24.:04:26.

The NHS, providing every child with the very best education

:04:27.:04:29.

There's uncertainty over which of our MPs will decide

:04:30.:04:34.

There's much interest in Rushcliffe's Ken Clarke,

:04:35.:04:37.

He said he'd stand down in 2020, but the election has come early

:04:38.:04:45.

and the Rushcliffe seat survives being carved up in proposed boundary

:04:46.:04:53.

Finally, the MP with the smallest majority in the country

:04:54.:04:59.

She won for the Conservatives in 2015 by 41 votes.

:05:00.:05:09.

She too was surprised by today's announcement.

:05:10.:05:10.

She told me she's aiming to at least double her majority.

:05:11.:05:15.

As Tony's just mentioned, Amanda Solloway took Derby North

:05:16.:05:17.

with a handful of votes in 2015 and will be high

:05:18.:05:20.

Navtej Johal reports from the most marginal seat in the region.

:05:21.:05:31.

And therefore declare the Amanda Solloway is appointed as a member of

:05:32.:05:39.

Parliament for Derby not. The charcuterie that showed Amanda

:05:40.:05:45.

Solloway unseated Labour's Chris Williamson to become the MP for

:05:46.:05:50.

Derby not. The result was so tight that it took a treat returns to

:05:51.:05:54.

confirm that she had won by 31 votes. The smallest majority in the

:05:55.:06:00.

country. The outcome of the night meant that Amanda Solloway became

:06:01.:06:04.

the local MP. Few would have predicted then that just two years

:06:05.:06:08.

on she would be fighting for it it again. How have the last two years,

:06:09.:06:13.

including the referendum, affected how people will vote in Derby not?

:06:14.:06:18.

Whoever put forward Remain I will vote for. So Brexit has affected the

:06:19.:06:25.

way you thought? Well, I'm a Labour voter but I quite like Theresa May

:06:26.:06:30.

and I like her views. I used to vote Conservative now I would thought

:06:31.:06:38.

Labour. Why is that? Jeremy Corbyn. I'm not sure I will have to give

:06:39.:06:44.

that a lot of consideration. I'm not sure. You could regain API labour.

:06:45.:06:50.

Something like that. Same as I always do. Conservative. We will

:06:51.:06:54.

always vote Labour. It's a tradition. I will have to do my

:06:55.:06:56.

research and design. -- and decide. Still to come this evening -

:06:57.:07:02.

away from the polls, Don't let the sunshine for you. We

:07:03.:07:14.

have some frost across some parts of the region to write. Full forecast

I was just watching telly with my kids and we started to smell

:08:09.:08:11.

I just saw it sparking and popping and I just got the kids out and ran

:08:12.:08:23.

them up to my friend's house and I came back and it was ablaze.

:08:24.:08:31.

Something happened a few weeks ago and I've been wondering

:08:32.:08:36.

about it the last few weeks, the electrics.

:08:37.:08:38.

With this happening last night, I have a straightaway

:08:39.:08:41.

A neighbour phoned me and I had a feeling it was something

:08:42.:08:44.

Every year, thousands of people in the East Midlands

:08:45.:08:48.

try to kick their addictions to drugs and drink.

:08:49.:08:50.

In Derbyshire, these rehab programmes have

:08:51.:08:53.

just been merged to form a new single service.

:08:54.:08:57.

The person leading this project is a former addict

:08:58.:08:59.

Our social affairs correspondent, Jeremy Ball, has been to meet her.

I love what I do. I love to wake up in the morning. Rosie's enthusiasm

:09:10.:09:17.

comes from recovering from the depths of despair. She was 14 and

:09:18.:09:24.

she started to use cannabis. That glitter harder class a drugs. As she

:09:25.:09:29.

puts it, she went off the rails. I got caught and I was told I would go

:09:30.:09:34.

to prison for two years. That was my massive wake-up call. I realised I

:09:35.:09:38.

didn't want to do it any more. I drink my family for support.

:09:39.:09:42.

years since Rose started her treatment. Now she is a shining

hoping to reach the play-offs finals Well, there is so much anticipation

here tonight with Leicester on the brink of a place

:18:51.:18:59.

in the final four. Former Leicester City striker

Gerry Taggart has been to every game home in the Champions League,

:19:08.:19:10.

asked him what Leicester have to do There is concern is the defence. Wes

ripped out. Robert suspended for tonight. It will be very cagey but

:19:36.:19:39.

there was no doubt about it. When you take the part of your defence

:19:40.:19:43.

out, it would cost you. It is a big blow for Leicester. It was a

:19:44.:19:54.

penalty, they should not have lost. Will this sense of injustice helped

destroy the players, crowd on? -- helps to motivate the players. He

:20:04.:20:09.

:20:10.:20:12.

:20:13.:20:20.

no mistake about that. The ideal is not to concede a goal or match, and

:20:21.:20:27.

to win. It is simple when you put it like that. But they have two score

two goals. Athletic Madrid are masters on the pitch. Great

prediction, can they do it? 2-0. You think so? Absolutely. They did move

:20:48.:20:54.

us to around. -- they did it in the last round. Why can't they do it? A

:20:55.:21:06.

lot of the fans are also saying 2-0. What an incredible journey from

:21:07.:21:08.

Leicester City. The fans have adequate the memories out of this

Champions League champion. -- incredible memories. We will have

:21:18.:21:22.

the results in our late bulletin. Thank you very much indeed. I'm

:21:23.:21:27.

looking forward to that. If you want the results, we are not on 12 ten to
