It's almost 6.30 - you're watching East Midlands Today.

:00:07.:00:08.

Our top story tonight: The half a million needed for a

:00:09.:00:11.

Just like 20-month-old Dawson's cancer is chemo resistant. His only

:00:12.:00:25.

hope is treatment in the United States. If it's the only way we can

:00:26.:00:29.

save her son, we are these are going to go and fight to get there. Also

:00:30.:00:35.

tonight, a pregnant Parliamentary candidate's ability to become an MP

:00:36.:00:41.

is called into question. It's totally unacceptable, and cancel the

:00:42.:00:44.

right has acknowledged he has been very naive. Plus, I am in Mansfield

:00:45.:00:51.

to test the political waters with our collection bowls. And the

:00:52.:00:56.

alarming art exhibition. Passers-by think the place is on fire. It still

:00:57.:00:59.

looks like something is on fire. Good evening and welcome to Friday's

:01:00.:01:10.

programme with Geeta Pendse First tonight, the desperate race

:01:11.:01:12.

against time for the parents of a young boy who's been diagnosed

:01:13.:01:16.

with a cancer so rare it affects 20-month-old Dawson Willcock has

:01:17.:01:19.

endured several rounds of chemotherapy but this week

:01:20.:01:25.

doctors broke the devastating news His parents Wendy and David

:01:26.:01:28.

say his only hope is potential And now they've started a huge

:01:29.:01:33.

fundraising campaign called Dollars For Dawson to raise

:01:34.:01:40.

half a million pounds. This is the poignant record of

:01:41.:01:54.

Dawson Willcock's treatment for rare liver cancer. Everything they go to,

:01:55.:02:01.

they get a beat. That isn't what he has been through, for five months.

:02:02.:02:06.

The 20-month-old, who is in the Queen's medical Centre, was

:02:07.:02:09.

diagnosed in January. You never think your child is going to get

:02:10.:02:14.

cancer, it happens to other people, not you. And then on January 24, my

:02:15.:02:18.

birthday, we got the official diagnosis that it was cancer. And

:02:19.:02:23.

the chances of a child having that is not .9 -- 0.9 in 1 million. Last

:02:24.:02:32.

month, doctors discovered the cancer had spread to his lungs. His

:02:33.:02:37.

parents, Wendy and David, were told one last resort would be to further

:02:38.:02:41.

types of chemotherapy, but this week, came more devastating news.

:02:42.:02:47.

The results came back. The tumours had in fact got bigger. At this

:02:48.:02:53.

point, they are stuck for what they can do. And when I said about being

:02:54.:02:59.

the hardest thing you thought you could hear, when they say your child

:03:00.:03:02.

has cancer, the hardest thing is when you're told your child is chemo

:03:03.:03:07.

resistant and nothing is going to work. That is the hardest thing.

:03:08.:03:15.

It's hard and very difficult. Dawson's consultant consultant said

:03:16.:03:22.

she would continue to work with the parents. She is liaising with

:03:23.:03:27.

hospitals nationally and internationally to explore any

:03:28.:03:31.

possible treatment options. But now the couple are trying to raise half

:03:32.:03:34.

?1 million for possible treatment in America. If there is someone that

:03:35.:03:40.

can save her son, we are obviously going to go and fight to get there.

:03:41.:03:45.

So it all for Dawson, we want to get as many people as possible to donate

:03:46.:03:52.

?1. It's nothing. You know, your ?1 could save my baby's life. What a

:03:53.:04:02.

brave little boy. And we wish them all the best.

:04:03.:04:03.

Next tonight, the leader of the Conservative group on one

:04:04.:04:06.

of our councils has said comments made by one of her councillors

:04:07.:04:09.

about a pregnant Labour election candidate were unacceptable.

:04:10.:04:11.

Erewash Councillor Jon Wright suggested she'd be too busy changing

:04:12.:04:14.

nappies to devote her time to things like Brexit.

:04:15.:04:20.

Well, James Robeson's here with more.

:04:21.:04:22.

This situation has blown up on Facebook following comments

:04:23.:04:31.

by Cllr Jon Wright, who, for the last two years,

:04:32.:04:38.

has represented the Hallam Fields Ward of Erewash Borough Council,

:04:39.:04:41.

His comments were about Catherine Atkinson who is standing

:04:42.:04:48.

for the Erewash contituency seat for the Labour Party

:04:49.:04:50.

She is a mother of one, and is expecting her second child.

:04:51.:04:54.

Recently, Cllr Wright commented on facebook

:04:55.:04:56.

He asked if people knew she was pregnant, and then made

:04:57.:05:00.

other comments about her fitness to be an MP if she is about to

:05:01.:05:03.

But his comments received a stream of protests on facebook from people

:05:04.:05:16.

who felt what he had said on the social media site

:05:17.:05:18.

So what has Councillor Wright had to say about the remarks he made?

:05:19.:05:25.

In response, Mr Wright has now issued an apology on facebook:

:05:26.:05:54.

Earlier today, I spoke to the leader of the Conservative group

:05:55.:05:57.

on Erewash Borough Council, who says they do not endorse

:05:58.:05:59.

in any way Mr Wright's original facebook comments.

:06:00.:06:05.

It's totally unacceptable, what Councillor Wright said,

:06:06.:06:07.

has acknowledged that he has been very naive, he has put an

:06:08.:06:12.

unreserved apology out, we will apologise to Catherine Atkinson,

:06:13.:06:16.

and I hope that Catherine Atkinson takes the

:06:17.:06:20.

apology in the spirit that it is being given.

:06:21.:06:23.

We all, you know, apologise to her about this.

:06:24.:06:28.

Catherine Atkinson has told us tonight that she does not accept

:06:29.:06:30.

The Conservative group on Erewash borough council say,

:06:31.:06:37.

that once they've gathered all the evidence, they will be

:06:38.:06:41.

holding a meeting with Mr Wright about his comments, in due course.

:06:42.:06:47.

An inquest has concluded the death of a 52-year-old man who was fatally

:06:48.:06:56.

injured at the Leicester factory where he worked was accidental.

:06:57.:06:58.

Tarsem Singh died last April after he'd been operating

:06:59.:07:01.

a piece of machinery at Nylacast Engineering Plastic

:07:02.:07:03.

Amy Harris is live for us there tonight -

:07:04.:07:06.

Amy, what's the background to this case?

:07:07.:07:12.

52-year-old Tarsem Singh is described as a factory worker who

:07:13.:07:17.

loved his job. But it was well doing that job that he was critically

:07:18.:07:23.

injured on April 15 last year will stop he died the following day, with

:07:24.:07:25.

his family by his side. His presence is missed, you know,

:07:26.:07:38.

going home is just not the same. Something we will never get over, it

:07:39.:07:41.

is something that will just have to learn to live with. He worked here

:07:42.:07:50.

at neither cast, -- at Nylacast, a plastics engineering company. A

:07:51.:07:55.

piece of equipment flew off and struck him while he was working. An

:07:56.:07:59.

inquest heard that it was at the speed of up to 80 mph. It hit him

:08:00.:08:03.

with such force that it fractured his door and chest and the trauma

:08:04.:08:09.

led to a heart attack. At the inquest here in Leicester town Hall,

:08:10.:08:13.

the jury heard that the incident was foreseeable. The end cap had

:08:14.:08:16.

previously struck another employee on the hand and a health and safety

:08:17.:08:23.

inspector told the court, the machine's risk assessment wasn't

:08:24.:08:25.

suitable or sufficient, someone would have been injured eventually.

:08:26.:08:33.

The inquest concluded Mr Singh died accidentally. The family are still

:08:34.:08:37.

waiting to you the outcome of an investigation into his death by the

:08:38.:08:38.

Health and Safety Executive. Neither cast as it has ensured all

:08:39.:08:49.

relevant information will be available for review and will

:08:50.:08:53.

continue to work with the Health and Safety Executive. In a statement, it

:08:54.:08:56.

says... Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service

:08:57.:09:13.

says discarded smoking materials were probably to blame for a fire

:09:14.:09:15.

in Newhall last night. It happened at a house

:09:16.:09:18.

on Main Street. A woman escaped from the property

:09:19.:09:20.

via a first floor window Firefighters say the house didn't

:09:21.:09:23.

have any working fire alarms and they are reminding people

:09:24.:09:26.

of the importance of Drivers in Leicester faced

:09:27.:09:28.

disruption this morning after a car overturned

:09:29.:09:34.

at a city centre roundabout. The vehicle ended up on its roof

:09:35.:09:38.

at the St Nicholas Circle at around Emergency services were called

:09:39.:09:41.

to the scene and officers say the driver was not

:09:42.:09:44.

seriously injured. A jury has heard the to former BBC

:09:45.:09:56.

:09:57.:10:04.

boys. Tony and Julie Wadsworth have both worked for BBC radio Leicester.

:10:05.:10:11.

They both deny charges of public indecency and assault. A reporter

:10:12.:10:15.

outlined what the jury had heard. And she is at Warwick Crown Court.

:10:16.:10:20.

What did the jury here today? The juror was told that they were

knowing and taking delight, it was said, in the fact that

:10:58.:10:59.

young lads were watching, something that they

:11:00.:11:02.

:11:03.:11:03.

would encouraged boys to engage in sexual acts

:12:43.:13:00.

has delayed major roadworks. The water main runs under a roundabout

meaning that the island and junction works can't go ahead. The City

Council says it is working with seven Trent to find a solution.

:13:10.:13:20.

We've now had the majority of the party manifestos published

:13:21.:13:22.

and the first of the big TV election debates -

:13:23.:13:25.

week of electioneering? all at the end of this significant

:13:26.:13:31.

Our general election reporter John Hess has been

:13:32.:13:33.

to Mansfield to find out, together with his election

:13:34.:13:35.

I have come to Mansfield's historic Westgate water pump area.

:13:36.:13:38.

There have been political rallies and events

:13:39.:13:40.

staged here for centuries, so it is just the right place to test the

:13:41.:13:43.

political waters as we get closer to the general election.

:13:44.:13:51.

The bowls for the different parties... It may have been cold and

:13:52.:13:58.

wet today, but this general election and the sight of John stars have

:13:59.:14:01.

helped turn up the political temperature. To reason may is that

:14:02.:14:08.

your marketing, and that you did us no favours whatsoever. -- Margaret

Thatcher. In the referendum last year, is staggering 70 1% of people

:14:15.:14:29.

voted for Brexit. And 19% of the working population rely on benefits,

:14:30.:14:34.

that's the highest in the country. Because I'm in my 60s now, and I

:14:35.:14:38.

used to work, I am not entitled to that pension I work for. I have to

:14:39.:14:42.

wait and when you have health problems as well. You don't even

:14:43.:14:47.

know whether you are going to be your pension age. I don't think it's

:14:48.:14:52.

fair. Mansfield elected its first Labour MP in 1923 and has stuck with

:14:53.:14:57.

Labour ever since. Why have you chosen Bradford Labour? It's working

:14:58.:15:05.

class, isn't it? Is what I have brought up on. At the last general

:15:06.:15:10.

election, Labour's MP was re-elected with a 5000 majority. Ukip in third

:15:11.:15:15.

place behind the Tories, to a quarter of the vote. Why Ukip? We

:15:16.:15:26.

are seeing the NHS declining. I think they have attracted a lot of

:15:27.:15:34.

young people because I think it is something people can get behind.

:15:35.:15:44.

Before, there were pets and flying thousands of miners here. Now, it's

:15:45.:15:51.

all just a memory. I've been waiting 30 years for that kind of manifesto,

:15:52.:15:56.

it's brilliant. Wavy chosen bread? Rivals, Labour. I am working class.

:15:57.:16:04.

I don't want the leader, be honest. But I am voting for them. Byes a

:16:05.:16:12.

picture is emerging. Its neck and neck, but Mansell, hobbies, it's

:16:13.:16:18.

that has got the edge. Next week, John's jars and a selection bowls

:16:19.:16:19.

are in Derbyshire. Nottinghamshire Fire

:16:20.:16:25.

and Rescue Service say they've received numerous calls in recent

:16:26.:16:27.

weeks about a possible fire Staff have been reassuring concerned

:16:28.:16:30.

members of the public, that it's not smoke

:16:31.:16:34.

they're seeing, but steam. The vapour clouds are part

:16:35.:16:36.

of a new art exhibition which officially opens tonight

:16:37.:16:38.

at the Nottingham Contemporary. Four weeks, steam has done rising

:16:39.:16:52.

from the roof of Lottie Contemporary. The art Gallery has

:16:53.:16:56.

been publicising a new exhibition, but many people have confused the

:16:57.:17:00.

vapour clouds for smoke. At first, you think, oh, it's on fire. But I

:17:01.:17:05.

follow them on Twitter so I knew there was something going on.

:17:06.:17:08.

Initially, I did think something was on fire. Is going to have that

:17:09.:17:13.

reaction, isn't it? People look up and go, what the hell is going on?

:17:14.:17:18.

Nottinghamshire wire and rescue said they had taken numerous calls from

:17:19.:17:22.

members of the public concerned that the art galleries on fire. Because

:17:23.:17:25.

we know when the exhibitionism to be in operation, we reassure the

:17:26.:17:36.

colours. The artist says the intensity of the steam clouds

:17:37.:17:39.

threatened the intensity of the thinking happening inside the

:17:40.:17:43.

gallery. Staff say there is no cause for alarm. Is not a worry at all

:17:44.:17:48.

because it's harmless water vapour. We are working closely with our

:17:49.:17:51.

neighbours, the City Council, with the Fire Service and we have been

:17:52.:17:54.

getting lots of adverts up so I think everybody understands that

:17:55.:17:58.

this is about producing a cloud of harmless water vapour. It's really

:17:59.:18:02.

signifying all of these ideas that they are having in the building. You

:18:03.:18:06.

don't want to assume that all steam or smoke in the area is to do with

:18:07.:18:11.

the exhibition. So we would always encourage members of the public in

:18:12.:18:15.

the vicinity, if they genuinely have a reason to believe there is a fire,

:18:16.:18:21.

was call 909. It's better to be safe than sorry. The exhibition runs till

:18:22.:18:27.

the end of August. It's a chance to see ace show where there's smoke

:18:28.:18:32.

without fire. It is quite something isn't it? I

:18:33.:18:41.

reckon it's vaping. Let's start with Leicester City,

:18:42.:18:49.

and don't worry, we do have some But last night's penultimate game

:18:50.:18:52.

did not go according to plan as Leicester City

:18:53.:18:55.

:18:56.:18:58.

when the one bright spot of the day arrived -

:18:59.:19:02.

in January, club ambassador Alan Birchenall WILL be

doing his annual pre-match run. Leicester City's stars want

:19:24.:19:27.

:19:52.:20:02.

annual charity run, and he will be there, despite recovering

:20:03.:20:08.

from a cardiac arrest. Four months ago, he was dead

:20:09.:20:14.

for seven minutes, That's a lot.

:20:15.:20:17.

I know. He's up there on the verge

:20:18.:20:20.

of doing his 37th run. So it's been a really good recovery

and were all looking forward to He has raised millions

go to a charity close to his heart. It's for, heart wise,

:20:34.:20:38.

we need new mannequins, over 100 happen ordered, for schools

:20:39.:20:48.

and businesses and stuff like that. After they have been paid for,

:20:49.:20:57.

hopefully there will be quite a bit of dosh available so we can go out

:20:58.:21:00.

and buy more defibrillators so we can spread out to schools

:21:01.:21:03.

in and around the country. It's great to see him back

:21:04.:21:11.

at the training ground because there was a time when he had

:21:12.:21:13.

had a serious illness, if you like, and we are really pleased

:21:14.:21:17.

to see him back down here. We'll know it's too a good cause,

:21:18.:21:20.

and he will get the support from the players,

:21:21.:21:25.

we was a couple of laps as he does, and it will be great to see him back

:21:26.:21:28.

out there. Vardy and the gang will be with him,

:21:29.:21:32.

and they are asking for support for the man

:21:33.:21:35.

they call Mr Leicester City. A crowd pleasing move

:21:36.:21:42.

from the new Forest owners. On day one, they've announced that

:21:43.:21:46.

season ticket prices And after a turbulent season

:21:47.:21:48.

featuring record defeats and two new head coaches,

:21:49.:21:57.

Leicester Tigers are STILL in with a chance of winning

:21:58.:22:00.

the Premiership Title. The Champions are decided by the end

:22:01.:22:03.

of season play-offs. And that means they can

:22:04.:22:06.

still finish on top. In December, Richard Cockerill

:22:07.:22:18.

and Aaron Mauger were running And so, in March,

:22:19.:22:20.

amid strange victory So now, it's Matt O'Connor

:22:21.:22:24.

with his eyes on the prize. It's been a tough,

:22:25.:22:30.

challenging season on a lot of levels, but you know,

:22:31.:22:32.

this is what the lads play for, this is what they are about and this

:22:33.:22:35.

is probably the starting point for this group,

:22:36.:22:37.

the players and coaches, to make sure that we use Saturday

as an opportunity to make a statement about how

:22:41.:22:44.

we want to be moving forward. Tomorrow's opponents, Wasps,

:22:45.:22:49.

have spent big to excite and deservedly finished

:22:50.:22:52.

on top of the league. Leicester could get close,

:22:53.:22:56.

but Wasps, so far, too good. I think we have got to go

:22:57.:23:00.

out there and try to With the talent they have got,

:23:01.:23:03.

they're going to score tries, I don't think there's

:23:04.:23:07.

been a whole season without scoring one

:23:08.:23:09.

in a game, so we have got to go out

:23:10.:23:10.

there and score tries and then our defence has got to try

:23:11.:23:13.

and get on top of their attack. Owain Williams is off to Gloucester,

:23:14.:23:17.

but this is one last Yeah, to be honest,

:23:18.:23:21.

we probably perform better when we are underdogs

:23:22.:23:24.

and people write us off. And like I said, at Christmas

:23:25.:23:26.

time, if you would have thought we were in the top four,

:23:27.:23:28.

it would have been doubtful. So, like I said, we just

:23:29.:23:31.

have to prove people wrong. If you can't be there,

:23:32.:23:34.

afternoon. Cricket, finally, and it

:23:38.:23:41.

was actually dry enough in Wales for a full day's

:23:42.:23:43.

County Championship play. It was a tricky start

:23:44.:23:46.

for Nottinghamshire, but Jake Libby and Ricky Wessels

have more than stabilised the ship. Wetter in these parts so not long

:23:52.:23:54.

came pouring down. We might have had a fair amount of

:23:55.:24:15.

rain in the last few days, but as we know, it has followed a long dry

:24:16.:24:20.

spell. And despite those showers, reservoir levels remain a little

:24:21.:24:24.

down. But in Derbyshire, that has revealed a fascinating piece of the

:24:25.:24:25.

past. So lovely. It's fascinating. I like

:24:26.:25:27.

it up there. Meet, too. Those pictures are on our Facebook page if

:25:28.:25:29.

you want to have a look at them. It does feel as though we have seen

:25:30.:25:39.

more than our fair share of rain over the last few days, doesn't it?

:25:40.:25:44.

And certainly something a little bit drier around the corner, but seems

:25:45.:25:46.

like this have become quite familiar. But as I say, drying up as

:25:47.:25:52.

we had to the weekend. It does look as though Sunday will be the best of

:25:53.:25:56.

the dry weather, with more showers to, and Saturday despite a promising

:25:57.:26:02.

start. Let's just recap and look at the rain this morning, it worked its

:26:03.:26:05.

way up towards the north-east by the quickly but we were left with his

:26:06.:26:09.

tail end which has outstayed its welcome. It turned what Ari as it

:26:10.:26:14.

has broken up, but those showers will continue this evening and into

:26:15.:26:18.

the night, gradually easing and fading as we had through the early

:26:19.:26:22.

hours of the morning. Most places will dry up and it would be

:26:23.:26:25.

particularly cold, with a minimum temperature of around eight Celsius.

:26:26.:26:30.

Not a bad start to Saturday morning, a dry start, some of the morning

:26:31.:26:33.

sunshine around as well. Then we start to see one or to showers edged

:26:34.:26:37.

their way in from the west and then they will be get going. Extensive

:26:38.:26:41.

showers in the afternoon, and I think you will be quite lucky if you

:26:42.:26:45.

managed to avoid them altogether. Having said that, in between, there

:26:46.:26:48.

will be some bright, bright spells, some good spells of warm sunshine

:26:49.:26:52.

with highs of around 16 Celsius. Those showers are going to take a

:26:53.:26:55.

while to clear overnight, but on Sunday, what a difference. It will

:26:56.:27:00.

be a dry day, good spells sunshine around throughout the day, and

:27:01.:27:04.

feeling pleasantly warm as well in that sunshine with a top temperature

:27:05.:27:09.

of around 17 Celsius. We are just go to that aired a little bit too next

:27:10.:27:14.

week. On Monday, we will see when to showers edged their way end but it

:27:15.:27:18.

will be the warmest day of the week next week. 19 Celsius possibly the

:27:19.:27:22.

maximum on Monday. As we head into the rest of the week, pressure will

:27:23.:27:26.

build, that will settle things down so actually, a much quieter week to

:27:27.:27:32.

come next week. Sunday sounds nice, doesn't it? You

:27:33.:27:38.

have a drought story, don't you? It was amazing seeing that rail, but I

remember in Yorkshire, there was one with a an entire village at the
