And now the news for the East Midlands. | :00:13. | :00:14.
A health watchdog says those suffering with suspected dementia | :00:15. | :00:17.
are waiting too long for a diagnosis in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire. | :00:18. | :00:20.
Health bosses say they're discovering a record number | :00:21. | :00:22.
of cases, but delays are causing distresses to sufferers | :00:23. | :00:25.
They're carrying out a review in the New Year. | :00:26. | :00:28.
Our health correspondent Rob Sissons has more. | :00:29. | :00:38.
The Alzheimer's Society reckons that the number of people living | :00:39. | :00:40.
with dementia in the east midlands is around 60,000. | :00:41. | :00:45.
Therea, from Arnold in Nottinghamshire, is one of them. | :00:46. | :00:58.
It was two days before last Christmas that reason was diagnosed | :00:59. | :01:06.
with early onset Alzheimer's disease. She is 54. | :01:07. | :01:10.
And I noticed there was something wrong. | :01:11. | :01:12.
It wasn't a case of I thought there was something wrong, I knew | :01:13. | :01:15.
And not being able to do what she used to be able | :01:16. | :01:20.
Teresa said it took months to get diagnosed. | :01:21. | :01:23.
I thought I was too young to be in that sort of | :01:24. | :01:26.
Health watchers in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire says it's | :01:27. | :01:36.
concerned too many patients are having to work longer than the Tiger | :01:37. | :01:39.
time of six weeks from a GP referral to diagnosis by specialist. | :01:40. | :01:42.
The point is when they seek that help | :01:43. | :01:45.
Nothing will be the same thereafter and for some, it | :01:46. | :01:51.
is devastating, but it is only then that they can make the plans that | :01:52. | :01:55.
The NHS says a review of waiting times will get underway | :01:56. | :02:01.
next month, but stresses record numbers of patients are being | :02:02. | :02:03.
diagnosed with dementia and it is a big priority. | :02:04. | :02:13.
Well, a study at the University of Leicester has found a potential | :02:14. | :02:16.
drug treatment to restore memory loss in mice. | :02:17. | :02:18.
It's not for use in humans yet, but could be, within ten years. | :02:19. | :02:21.
Professor Andrew Tobin who led the project at Leicester, | :02:22. | :02:24.
and is now based in Glasgow, says it's an extremely | :02:25. | :02:26.
At the moment, there are no drugs available that slow the progression | :02:27. | :02:33.
of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's. | :02:34. | :02:34.
And this is the first time where we have been able to use | :02:35. | :02:37.
a drug of this type to actually slow the progression of | :02:38. | :02:40.
And this could offer some hope for Alzheimer's | :02:41. | :02:46.
patients, but at this stage, the study has | :02:47. | :02:48.
only been carried out on | :02:49. | :02:50.
So, we start with looking at mice and then we | :02:51. | :02:54.
have worked out the properties of the drugs that are necessary to slow | :02:55. | :02:57.
the progression of neurodegenerative disease and now | :02:58. | :03:02.
is to develop this drug for use in humans. | :03:03. | :03:08.
And what kind of time frame would you be looking at? | :03:09. | :03:12.
Well, now, we have gone quite a long way and so we're looking at a five | :03:13. | :03:16.
to ten year period now to develop this product into something that | :03:17. | :03:19.
And just to sum up, how significant is this really? | :03:20. | :03:23.
As I said, there are 850,000 people suffering from dementia in the UK, | :03:24. | :03:26.
the majority of those are suffering from Alzheimer's disease and so if | :03:27. | :03:29.
we can take this prototype drug and develop it, it will make a huge | :03:30. | :03:32.
impact from those people suffering from a disease which will just keep | :03:33. | :03:35.
on increasing in its prevalence in society. | :03:36. | :03:37.
Professor Andrew Tobin, thank you very much. | :03:38. | :03:48.
Newcastle University says it'll investigate the death | :03:49. | :03:49.
of a 20-year-old Leicestershire student who died after | :03:50. | :03:51.
Ed Farmer, from Tilton on Hill, died in the Royal Victoria | :03:52. | :03:56.
Police say he arrived at the hospital in a life-threatening | :03:57. | :03:59.
condition after drinking an excessive amount. | :04:00. | :04:01.
The University says it's saddened by the news and once the Coroner | :04:02. | :04:04.
establishes the facts, it will take any appropriate action. | :04:05. | :04:15.
A court's heard how a young Nottingham man died from a single | :04:16. | :04:18.
stab wound to his chest, after his car was surrounded by | :04:19. | :04:20.
Four men, originally charged with murder, | :04:21. | :04:25.
have instead been jailed today for manslaughter. | :04:26. | :04:26.
It's because phone footage has revealed the actual murderer | :04:27. | :04:29.
James Roberson reports from Nottingham Crown Court. | :04:30. | :04:40.
Over the last few weeks, the court here has heard how increasing | :04:41. | :04:43.
animosity grew between two groups of young men here in Nottingham. | :04:44. | :04:46.
It culminated in the death of 21-year-old. | :04:47. | :04:59.
The court heard how around 8:30pm on June 1st this | :05:00. | :05:01.
year, his car was surrounded by three other car is on his own street | :05:02. | :05:05.
His windows were smashed and he received a stab wound | :05:06. | :05:08.
to the lung and heart, from which he collapsed and died. | :05:09. | :05:11.
Four men aged between 18 and 24 have pleaded | :05:12. | :05:13.
guilty to manslaughter, because it has now been revealed the actual | :05:14. | :05:16.
All four were originally charged with murder, | :05:17. | :05:19.
but it was revealed in court today that phone footage that | :05:20. | :05:21.
originally was thought to show the four | :05:22. | :05:23.
defendants as the colour was | :05:24. | :05:24.
It showed that the defendant did not wield the | :05:25. | :05:27.
knife, but another man, who has now disappeared. | :05:28. | :05:29.
When we reviewed our own evidence, we find that the | :05:30. | :05:31.
detail became clearer when we've used it on Apple software and Apple | :05:32. | :05:34.
Then we were able to exactly see what had gone off. | :05:35. | :05:38.
We have already made steps to make sure | :05:39. | :05:40.
that officers are aware that when things are transferred from one | :05:41. | :05:43.
format to another, everything must be viewed | :05:44. | :05:44.
format to another, everything must be viewed in the original | :05:45. | :05:47.
Judge Stuart Rafferty told the four accused that | :05:48. | :05:50.
his death was wholly needless and that they all knew who the real | :05:51. | :05:53.
Qamran Ahmed, aged 21 on the left was jailed for seven years. | :05:54. | :05:58.
Mohammed Quasim aged 24 and Junaid Farrukh aged 21 both | :05:59. | :06:00.
received nine years and 11 months and the youngest, 18-year-old | :06:01. | :06:02.
Mohamud Alasow on the right, the instigator, | :06:03. | :06:04.
Nottinghamshire Police say that the hunt for the actual killer | :06:05. | :06:09.
A new visitor attraction is being planned in Leicester, | :06:10. | :06:23.
based on the story of forensic science and its role in solving | :06:24. | :06:26.
It's a partnership project led by the King Richard the third | :06:27. | :06:29.
Visitor Centre and the University of Leicester and would feature | :06:30. | :06:32.
the pioneering work of Professor Sir Alec Jeffreys. | :06:33. | :06:34.
The Council owned Conway Buildings in Greyfriars is being considered | :06:35. | :06:36.
Next - they say the best gifts come in small packages and that's | :06:37. | :06:47.
certainly true for parents Mel and Khaled Ibrahim from | :06:48. | :06:50.
Their daughter Amaya was born 16 weeks early back | :06:51. | :06:54.
in April, but she's finally been allowed home. | :06:55. | :06:56.
They say it's the best Christmas present they could have wished for. | :06:57. | :06:59.
Eight months after she was born, Amaya Ibrahim has finally been | :07:00. | :07:07.
She arrived 16 weeks early in April, much to the surprise | :07:08. | :07:13.
She looked like a little bird and she was moving and | :07:14. | :07:18.
it just, it scared me, because I was on my | :07:19. | :07:21.
own and I didn't know what | :07:22. | :07:22.
I wanted to hold her, keep her warm, but I knew that I could to | :07:23. | :07:27.
So I just stayed there waiting for help to come. | :07:28. | :07:30.
And so Amaya's fight for survival began. | :07:31. | :07:32.
She spent most of her life at Nottingham's | :07:33. | :07:34.
Children's Hospital at the Queens medical Centre, battling everything | :07:35. | :07:36.
from lung disease to sepsis and still relies on oxygen. | :07:37. | :07:40.
Babies born that early have many complications with | :07:41. | :07:42.
their bowels, with their lungs and they need a lot of support | :07:43. | :07:45.
And it's fantastic that now she has reached a time when | :07:46. | :07:49.
all of the team looking after her decided she is ready for home. | :07:50. | :07:52.
Her mum and dad say she wouldn't be alive | :07:53. | :07:57.
today had it not been for the | :07:58. | :07:59.
treatment she received at the QMC and that is why they have raised | :08:00. | :08:02.
over ?11,000 for the neonatal unit where her journey began. | :08:03. | :08:10.
They spent 19 weeks battling to save her. | :08:11. | :08:13.
She has had many, many downs and also many ups | :08:14. | :08:15.
and there have been times when we thought | :08:16. | :08:17.
then something would happen and she couldn't. | :08:18. | :08:20.
Now, finally, Amaya is home just in time for Christmas. | :08:21. | :08:23.
Her mum and dad say it's the perfect present. | :08:24. | :08:25.
And judging by her face, Amaya's pretty pleased too. | :08:26. | :08:38.
Leicester City Council is hoping to cover the city's Magazine Gateway | :08:39. | :08:40.
of the Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red installation that covered | :08:41. | :08:46.
Now Leicester has made a bid to host it in 2018. | :08:47. | :08:50.
If successful, the city will have it for six weeks. | :08:51. | :08:53.
So, it's goodbye from me, but with your weather now, here's Alex. | :08:54. | :09:06.
If anything could be said about the weather for the week ahead, it's | :09:07. | :09:12.
certainly a mixed bag. We are starting on quite a cloudy notes and | :09:13. | :09:16.
then that wind will pick up later in the week and we have rain and | :09:17. | :09:20.
showers on the way, too. It's not all bad news as we go to White | :09:21. | :09:24.
Christmas, because we have brighter spells in the picture as well. For | :09:25. | :09:28.
tonight, that drizzly rain from earlier is slowly starting to move | :09:29. | :09:33.
out of the way. Less than fog patches around this evening, not | :09:34. | :09:38.
quite as much as at the weekend. Particularly up around the | :09:39. | :09:43.
Derbyshire Peak District there tomorrow morning and afternoon has | :09:44. | :09:48.
the clear the picture. Major spells in the afternoon, highs of only | :09:49. | :09:51.
around six Celsius. It will be chilly, wrap up warm. What will be | :09:52. | :09:58.
next? Cloudy conditions for the next day or so. Show is starting to work | :09:59. | :10:01.
their way across the region in the early hours of Wednesday. Those of | :10:02. | :10:08.
two Celsius on Wednesday night. Will beget query spells, we may just | :10:09. | :10:12.
about see a patch of frost and cruel sports. Once we get the first band | :10:13. | :10:17.
of rain at the way, a cloudy picture on Wednesday and another band of | :10:18. | :10:21.
rain and showers starts working on Wednesday afternoon. Highs of around | :10:22. | :10:27.
nine Celsius. Slightly milder on Wednesday afternoon. This is what | :10:28. | :10:31.
the pressure tractor doing. The high pressure protecting us from the | :10:32. | :10:33.
front coming in from the Atlantic is moving away. The Isa buyers are | :10:34. | :10:38.
squeezing together, windier conditions was the end of the week | :10:39. | :10:45.
and more brain as well. 30 will be mostly dry, just few bits of drizzle | :10:46. | :10:50.
here and there. Quite cloudy, but brighter spells and active cooler | :10:51. | :10:55.
temperatures. Friday again, a cloudy note to start with and then I been | :10:56. | :10:58.
size to work in the early on with highs in the degrees Celsius. I will | :10:59. | :10:59.
leave you with the The rest of the weekend, some rain | :11:00. | :11:03.
around, windy, but with dry and bright spells. | :11:04. | :11:11.
Heavy weather is brewing, it will not reach us just yet. It will take | :11:12. | :11:17.
a good few days before the stormy weather reaches us. At the moment, | :11:18. | :11:22.
it's just potential, nothing is certain, but it will be different to | :11:23. | :11:26.
what we've had over the last few weeks, it's been so calm. We have a | :11:27. | :11:31.
jet stream raging out of North America making a beeline for the | :11:32. | :11:33. |
