The mother of a young Derbyshire backpacker stabbed

to death in Australia, has received a personal letter

from the country's Prime Minister pledging support to her campaign

20-year-old Mia Ayliffe-Chung was doing unpaid work on a farm

when she was attacked and killed in a workers' hostel.

Our reporter Navtej Johal has been to meet Mia's mother.

Stabbed to death just weeks before her 21st birthday.

Mia Ayliffe-Chung from Wirksworth had been working on a farm in order

She died at this hostel in Home Hill in Queensland where she had to stay

under the visa rules to do the unpaid work.

29-year-old French national Smail Ayad has been charged

with her murder and that of Tom Jackson from Cheshire,

In the aftermath of her death, her mother Rosie has been

campaigning to improve conditions for backpackers in Australia,

She believes a lack of regulation on the system contributed

to her daughter's death, placing her in a hostel

They've got that duty of care, they need to be communicating

with them, they need to be on-site at all times

Yesterday, her campaign received a helping hand -

a letter from the Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull

which includes a pledge of $20 million to help crack down

on employers who exploit workers in Mia's position.

I'm pleased, yes, I'm really delighted to have

that recognition and to have that response

from Malcolm Turnbull himself, that meant a lot to me,

but it's where we go from here, isn't it?

What I want to see him do is to implement tighter regulation

of the industry in order to protect young backpackers who are working

What would Mia have made of all the work that you're doing?

I don't want to decide for Mia what she would have said about me.

What she'd probably have said would have been,

"Mum, your shoes don't go with your tights" and

"You might have cleaned the carpet before the BBC arrived!"

But you know that she would be a little bit

I know how Mia felt about me, I know she loved me.

A prison officer's been arrested, and several others have been

suspended, after a police investigation at Nottingham jail.

There have been reports that they're accused

of goading Muslim inmates, until they needed to be

Our social affairs correspondent, Jeremy Ball, reports.

The police have confirmed that a 28-year-old member of staff here

He is being questioned on suspicion of conspiracy to cause

actual bodily harm and he's been released on bail while the police

We also know that he's one of eight officers who have now been

The Sun newspaper reported that it was prompted by a game

they were playing on social media where they used vile racist

language where they scored the most points by provoking Muslim inmates

The prison service told me it can't give

any details while there is a police investigation, but there have been

ongoing concerns about violence here, violence committed by inmates.

The latest monitoring report says that in the last year, one inmate

was murdered by a fellow prisoner, there were almost 500 assaults

by inmates, more than 200 of those were assaults on members of staff

and this is all being blamed on a cocktail of pressures -

as well as those new, more powerful drugs.

And after last week's big prison riot in Birmingham, those concerns

An ex judge and her husband have been jailed after forging

a will to get their hands on a cottage in Nottinghamshire.

Margaret Hampshire, a former solicitor, along

with her husband Alan have been sentenced to six months in prison.

They were found guilty of doctoring the will of a man who died

in 2007 to claim ownership of his cottage in Rolleston.

While sentencing the pair the judge said they had "abused" the positions

Judges at the High Court have agreed that a consultation over the future

of the local government of Chesterfield was

Derbyshire County Council had argued that people in the town

weren't properly asked if they'd like to form part of

The Yorkshire city is holding its mayoral elections in May next year,

Police in Leicestershire are trying to find a man who allegedly stole

a defibrillator from a paramedic, while he was treating a patient.

They've released images of a man they'd like to speak to

in connection with the incident on Regent Street in Hinckley

in the early hours of Sunday the 4th of December.

The paramedic was abused and spat on by a crowd.

The device was later recovered with substantial damage.

A new 24-hour Urgent Care Centre has opened at Newark hospital today,

after a long-running campaign for improvements.

?700,000 has been spent on the changes,

but bosses say calls for a return to Accident and Emergency Care

Officially reopened after a major investment.

For the past few years, this hospital has been known

as a minor injuries unit and urgent care centre.

Bosses say the rebranding is subtle, but important.

The main difference now is we are bringing together primary

care services out of hours together with services that used to be

That's great for patients because they can come to one place

and we can direct them to the most appropriate place to receive care

There were protests at this site five years ago

following a controversial decision to close the old A unit.

Some campaigners have described today's rebranding as nothing more

than a PR tool and it's an issue that continues

It doesn't matter what it's called, it's what they do here that matters.

I'd like to see it as an A capable of treating more

than minor injuries, but I guess financially

We've never had any issues for myself or my son

so whether it is an A or urgent care, it's the same service.

Previously the local MP has raised concerns

about the care provided here, but now he says he's confident

I think we can see things are on the up.

We've got this major investment, it's a very good quality facility

and all of the statistics are improving for us.

More patients are coming through the door, fewer people

having to be taken onwards to Kingsmill in an ambulance.

The service in Newark will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Volunteers in Leicester have been helping homeless people in Leicester

tonight with a special Christmas party.

They were given hot meals, Christmas presents and clothing

Organisers estimate there are around 50 homeless people

in the city and wanted to give them festive cheer.

There's lots of people enjoying a warm winter meal here in Leicester

tonight and it's all thanks to donations from the public who have

helped to pay for all this food and organised

by the One Love charity, founded by Mohammed.

The public have really stepped up and helped us

give the homeless a wonderful Christmas party.

We've got amazing food, hot food, presents waiting to come,

In Leicester, there are estimated around 50.

I would say there's probably a few more that aren't accounted for

and then there's also vulnerable people.

People that are elderly, people that aren't necessarily in the best

income bracket and they need a really big helping hand

during the festive period as well, so it's good to help them.

Yes, it was two years ago we were outside in

the Leicester market and, you know, and this time, it can get freezing

so even when you're throwing a really good Christmas party,

everyone's shivering and it's a really big thanks to

the City Retreat who have given this venue completely free of charge

You're not homeless, but why are you helping here?

You know, when I arrived here, I was so alone and I didn't have

These people helped me to communicate with other people

and now I'd like to repeat their behaviour and be kind with people.

And the organisers here have been saying that it's great

They just wish there were fewer they needed to help.

those clear skies, temperatures will drop down

so we are looking at a touch of frost and certainly further south

some patchy fog is likely to form as well.

For most of us though, it will stay dry but I think

you are at risk of just seeing the odd isolated shower.

It starts off dry but then the rain will start

to push in and that's going to push through on a very strong and gusty

wind so keep listening to the forecast

and then into Christmas weekend, well, Christmas Eve, it looks like

it is going to be mostly dry and then as we head

into Christmas Day, is going to be mild, very windy once again

and we are looking at some outbreaks of rain at times as well.
