And now the news for the East Midlands; I'm Maurice Flynn. | :00:00. | :00:20.
First tonight, Rolls-Royce has reported one of its biggest ever | :00:21. | :00:23.
At ?4.6 billion, it's also one of the biggest losses | :00:24. | :00:36.
Our chief reporter Quentin Rayner has the details. | :00:37. | :00:40.
Yes, a very big number - ?4.6 billion. | :00:41. | :00:42.
It's one of the largest corporate losses ever reported in the UK, | :00:43. | :00:45.
and it comes at the end of an awful year for the Derby aerospace giant. | :00:46. | :00:49.
It's Britain's most famous company and its name has become | :00:50. | :00:53.
shorthand for the very best, but these have not been the best | :00:54. | :00:55.
With five profit warnings in three years, it's now had | :00:56. | :01:00.
to post the biggest loss in its 133-year history. | :01:01. | :01:03.
That said, the bulk of the loss is due to an accounting adjustment | :01:04. | :01:05.
Overall the situation is not rosy, but not to the extent that this | :01:06. | :01:16.
But it is an uphill battle for Rolls-Royce - | :01:17. | :01:19.
but they have embarked on a serious programme of restructuring, | :01:20. | :01:24.
cost-cutting, they aim to have savings of about ?200 million | :01:25. | :01:29.
So it's not a rosy picture, but nothing to the extent | :01:30. | :01:33.
But Rolls-Royce IS going to have to pay ?671 million in combined | :01:34. | :01:40.
fines for 24 years of bribery and corruption across the world, | :01:41. | :01:43.
exposed after the biggest investigation by the Serious Fraud | :01:44. | :01:45.
Office - prompting this video released last month by Rolls-Royce. | :01:46. | :01:52.
The behaviour uncovered in the course of the investigations | :01:53. | :01:54.
by the Serious Fraud Office and other authorities is completely | :01:55. | :01:56.
unacceptable, and we apologise unreservedly for it. | :01:57. | :01:59.
When the Deferred Prosecution Agreement was granted | :02:00. | :02:01.
by Lord Justice Leveson last month, his verdict was stinging. | :02:02. | :02:12.
He said the SFO investigation unearthed the most serious breaches | :02:13. | :02:14.
of criminal law in the areas of bribery and corruption - | :02:15. | :02:17.
adding that some of this corruption involved controlling the minds | :02:18. | :02:19.
As a company Rolls-Royce avoided a criminal prosecution, | :02:20. | :02:22.
but now the Serious Fraud Office is looking into bringing | :02:23. | :02:25.
It's been reported in certain areas of the press that those | :02:26. | :02:28.
investigations could involve up to three dozen people, | :02:29. | :02:30.
and Rolls-Royce says it continues to cooperate with the SFO. | :02:31. | :02:33.
With 14,000 workers, Rolls-Royce is Derby's biggest employer. | :02:34. | :02:35.
What happens at the Sinfin site is keenly felt in the city. | :02:36. | :02:40.
They've just got to hope that Rolls-Royce actually have got a plan | :02:41. | :02:43.
in place to minimise the effects, to get new orders in. | :02:44. | :02:46.
Rolls-Royce to me has always been something good in Derby, | :02:47. | :02:49.
and I would hate to think of Rolls-Royce going down. | :02:50. | :02:51.
I think they got a get out of jail free card, | :02:52. | :02:56.
because of their size, because of...you know, | :02:57. | :02:57.
There's no suggestion Rolls-Royce is under threat. | :02:58. | :03:07.
It's got a healthy order book, costs are coming down, | :03:08. | :03:10.
Its CEO says they're now looking forward, | :03:11. | :03:13.
but has called for high standards to be maintained, to ensure | :03:14. | :03:15.
that Rolls-Royce becomes a more trusted company. | :03:16. | :03:19.
So what about the future prospects for Rolls-Royce | :03:20. | :03:21.
selling its technology around the world, after the bribery | :03:22. | :03:23.
Here's the view of Howard Wheeldon, an aerospace specialist for two | :03:24. | :03:28.
From a reputational point of view I'm less concerned about that - | :03:29. | :03:34.
I really don't think that Rolls-Royce is going to face | :03:35. | :03:37.
problems in trying to sell its engines to airlines, | :03:38. | :03:43.
because of the nature of that 671 million deferred prosecution amount. | :03:44. | :03:49.
Post-Brexit, everybody knows the pound is down, | :03:50. | :04:01.
so it means Rolls-Royce has taken a big hit on this fund, | :04:02. | :04:04.
But of course over time currency rates change, | :04:05. | :04:11.
and that particular loss could very well dwindle right down again. | :04:12. | :04:13.
What is true is that the underlying profits are down by about a half | :04:14. | :04:24.
on what they were last year, from ?1.4 billion to ?813 million. | :04:25. | :04:27.
Better than expected, so not a disaster - | :04:28. | :04:28.
A 34-year-old man from Leicester has been jailed for hitting a police | :04:29. | :04:33.
officer with his van, while fleeing from a building site | :04:34. | :04:35.
Courtney Johnson pleaded guilty to theft and causing GBH | :04:36. | :04:38.
with intent to resist arrest, after the incident in | :04:39. | :04:41.
Today he was jailed for almost four years at Leicester Crown Court. | :04:42. | :04:44.
The judge, Philip Head, described his actions | :04:45. | :04:46.
Cash grants are being made available to employers in our region, | :04:47. | :04:52.
to help former offenders find legitimate jobs. | :04:53. | :04:55.
The money's coming from our Police and Crime Commissioners - | :04:56. | :04:57.
an attempt to break the cycle of unemployment and crime that some | :04:58. | :05:00.
Our social affairs correspondent Jeremy Ball reports. | :05:01. | :05:09.
Sam is making a clean start; no-one wanted to give him a job | :05:10. | :05:12.
That was until he was given a placement here | :05:13. | :05:16.
At the end of the third week they turned around to me and said, | :05:17. | :05:21.
"We would like to offer you a full-time job." | :05:22. | :05:24.
It was like a dream come true, my eyes just lit up | :05:25. | :05:27.
No, it really was the best news I could have heard | :05:28. | :05:35.
Sam is one of hundreds of people with criminal records who have | :05:36. | :05:40.
been given placements through what is known | :05:41. | :05:41.
They are working side-by-side with staff at firms like this one | :05:42. | :05:45.
an opportunity to make an honest living. | :05:46. | :05:56.
The charity is being funded by Leicestershire's Police | :05:57. | :05:58.
and Crime Commissioner, who is spending ?40,000 per year | :05:59. | :06:01.
You know, there will be some people watching this who will say, | :06:02. | :06:07.
you know, "These job opportunities are rewarding people | :06:08. | :06:09.
It is really important for the rest of us, for society, | :06:10. | :06:20.
that those who have committed crime, paid the punishment, | :06:21. | :06:22.
have a chance when they come out to live lawful lives. | :06:23. | :06:25.
If they blow that chance, well, that is up to them, | :06:26. | :06:28.
but for the rest of us and for them themselves, it is absolutely | :06:29. | :06:31.
crucial that they are given that chance; otherwise | :06:32. | :06:33.
The Wire Project says two-thirds of its ex-offenders who are given | :06:34. | :06:40.
work placements get jobs within a year, and now Sam is | :06:41. | :06:43.
It seemed at times when it was impossible. | :06:44. | :06:46.
It is like there was this physical barrier, because of | :06:47. | :06:49.
I'm in a good position right now, I am not blowing it for anything. | :06:50. | :06:53.
Next: A service offering support for people with dementia | :06:54. | :06:57.
that's proving so popular, more volunteers are needed. | :06:58. | :07:05.
It's called the Side-By-Side service - a kind of unusual matchmaking | :07:06. | :07:08.
service which helps people who would otherwise | :07:09. | :07:09.
Artemis and Jennifer are both retired teachers, | :07:10. | :07:16.
grandmothers, and they share the same interest in books. | :07:17. | :07:19.
They have been matched as friends, because one of them has dementia. | :07:20. | :07:22.
Artemis was diagnosed five years ago. | :07:23. | :07:30.
Jennifer's visits mean Artemis can feel secure walking | :07:31. | :07:32.
Their pairing as pals is part of the Alzheimer's Society's | :07:33. | :07:39.
It aims to match helpers with those who need support. | :07:40. | :07:49.
list in Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire alone. | :07:50. | :08:00.
I am so looking forward to her coming. | :08:01. | :08:05.
In fact, recently I was telling her I am dreading when the time comes | :08:06. | :08:09.
I'm afraid you're stuck with me, because I just go on and on... | :08:10. | :08:17.
Well, I love "stuck", cos I keep being stuck with you! | :08:18. | :08:19.
And while Jennifer sticks with Artemis, others | :08:20. | :08:28.
with dementia claim they LOSE friends following diagnosis. | :08:29. | :08:30.
The aim now is to help them pick up vital new ones... | :08:31. | :08:33.
..and begin a whole new chapter in their lives. | :08:34. | :08:40.
A man from Nottingham, who had a cardiac arrest | :08:41. | :08:42.
at a football match in Derbyshire, today met the paramedics | :08:43. | :08:44.
Ian Taylor showed no signs of life for ten minutes after collapsing | :08:45. | :08:48.
Paramedics say the quick reaction of staff and volunteers | :08:49. | :08:52.
He was stood behind me, we were talking, and as I looked | :08:53. | :09:11.
around he fell down, instantaneously. | :09:12. | :09:12.
Just lying flat on his back, not breathing. | :09:13. | :09:14.
heart was stopped for quite a while. The CPR kept it going. I was very | :09:15. | :09:28.
lucky. Sport now, and four of our sides | :09:29. | :09:34.
have been in action tonight, A 4-4 draw at Mansfield Town | :09:35. | :09:51.
with Accrington Stanley, while Notts County lost 2-1 | :09:52. | :09:56.
at home to Exeter. That's your news and sport, | :09:57. | :09:58.
but let's check now on the weather - It is a lot cloudier than earlier, | :09:59. | :10:04.
and we have some quite mild temperatures coming in. The further | :10:05. | :10:07.
to the east you are, is where the best of the brightness was today. | :10:08. | :10:13.
This weather front is bringing quite a lot of cloud. Here's what's going | :10:14. | :10:16.
on in the bigger picture, we've got a couple of weather fronts so plenty | :10:17. | :10:22.
of cloud over the next few days, but it's this change in the weather | :10:23. | :10:26.
direction that is dragging in some milder air, and that is where we are | :10:27. | :10:32.
seeing temperatures creeping up. So as we go through this evening and | :10:33. | :10:36.
overnight we've got plenty of cloud, a few outbreaks of rain, and it is | :10:37. | :10:41.
going to be quite murky, some missed about and some fog over higher | :10:42. | :10:46.
ground. Temperatures falling to an overnight low of six, 7 degrees. A | :10:47. | :10:52.
mild start of the day tomorrow, plenty of cloud around. It will be | :10:53. | :10:56.
quite murky first thing, but then into the afternoon sun rain coming | :10:57. | :11:01.
up from the south-west. Temperatures at a maximum of | :11:02. | :11:03.
weather into the weekend. A bit of fog around to watch out for. Jon | :11:04. | :11:07.
Hammond with the national forecast now. | :11:08. | :11:11.
Good evening. There is some rain in the forecast but not a lot. Plenty | :11:12. | :11:16.
of dry weather to look forward to as we head to the weekend. Cloud | :11:17. | :11:22.
delivering some rain but plenty of spaces in between, hence my | :11:23. | :11:28.
optimism. One of these blobs of cloud is producing dampness right | :11:29. | :11:31.
now. We could see a glancing blow across the far south-east through | :11:32. | :11:36.
the early hours and later some rain arriving across the far south-west. | :11:37. | :11:40.
In between some hill fog overnight, not desperately cold, for most a | :11:41. | :11:43.
touch of frost across the northern Glens of Scotland. At the other end | :11:44. | :11:48.
of the UK some wet weather first thing for breakfast, pushing through | :11:49. | :11:51.
Devon and Cornwall into South Wales. It won't | :11:52. | :11:52. |
