for an Islamist extremist group, has been sentenced to

A month ago Ryan Counsell was found guilty of four terrorism offences.

He's a Muslim convert, who had downloaded a "wealth"

of jihadi extremist material, and bought military

That prompted a raid on his home near the ASDA store

They found he was due to fly out to the Philippines

Our Social Affairs Correspondent, Jeremy Ball, was at the sentencing

this afternoon at Woolwich Crown Court.

Judge Andrew Lees said he had no doubt that Ryan Counsell

That's a violent extremist group, that's pledged allegiance

to the so-called Islamic State, and which beheaded a German

The judge said he spent almost ?900 on that military equipment,

And he'd downloaded beheading videos, bomb-making guides,

and advice on how to pack, and to join the group,

I've been speaking to one local imam, Musharraf Hussain

from the Bobbers Hill mosque. He says "This case highlights

the dangers of Muslim converts trying to learn

I think anybody who wants to do any criminal activity and commit

violence and join any terrorist groups, it is shocking.

And we want to condemn it and I would not regard him as part

of the Muslim community or our city, in fact.

Rather than virtual teachers, we need real teachers.

Ryan Counsell was sentenced this afternoon.

He didn't show any emotion, but there was some mitigation

from his barrister. He said that Counsell chose

to leave Nottingham soon after the Brexit vote,

because he was worried about a backlash against Muslims.

He also said that if Counsell had "cold-called" Abu Sayyaf,

the chances are that instead of recruiting him, they would

have taken him hostage and held him for ransom.
