And now the news for the East Midlands, I'm Geeta Pendse. | :00:13. | :00:14.
First tonight, the police in Nottinghamshire have started | :00:15. | :00:16.
an intensive search for a mother and her two young sons | :00:17. | :00:19.
They say they urgently need to hear from anyone who can help trace them. | :00:20. | :00:25.
Samantha Baldwin was last seen near Nottingham city centre. | :00:26. | :00:29.
Make no mistake, this search is a priority | :00:30. | :00:40.
I'm at Central police station where earlier this evening | :00:41. | :00:49.
briefed us the media on the latest developments. | :00:50. | :00:50.
I can tell you the missing woman is Samantha Baldwin who's | :00:51. | :00:53.
42 and it's believed she is with her two young sons. | :00:54. | :00:56.
Lewis Madge, who's nine, and his six-year-old brother Dylan. | :00:57. | :01:01.
The family are from Newark but have connections to both Lincolnshire | :01:02. | :01:04.
and Manchester and it's possible they may have travelled | :01:05. | :01:07.
How intensive is the police search tonight? | :01:08. | :01:13.
Well, they are taking this very seriously. | :01:14. | :01:20.
They have a dedicated team of three detective sergeants and 11 detective | :01:21. | :01:24.
constables who are working round the clock. | :01:25. | :01:29.
They also have search teams working in a targeted way to find | :01:30. | :01:32.
They've got specialist missing from home teams and neighbourhood | :01:33. | :01:38.
They have conducted searches of properties and talked | :01:39. | :01:43.
We can't underestimate the importance of the information | :01:44. | :01:52.
So, any bit of information, however small somebody might think it is, | :01:53. | :01:56.
if they've seen people that fit the description, if they have any | :01:57. | :02:00.
knowledge or have heard any rumours about where Samantha and the two | :02:01. | :02:06.
boys might be, then please get in touch through | :02:07. | :02:09.
It's really, really important people do so. | :02:10. | :02:13.
A small bit of information might be the little bits of the jigsaw | :02:14. | :02:16.
Although they're from Newark, Samantha was last seen | :02:17. | :02:26.
near Nottingham City Centre yesterday and police have | :02:27. | :02:30.
They're also working with police in Manchester and Lincolnshire. | :02:31. | :02:40.
"We have two little boys and a mother," they told me | :02:41. | :02:43.
"we want to find them safe and well, that's out priority." | :02:44. | :02:49.
And a reminder of those numbers again. | :02:50. | :02:53.
If you have information you can call 101 and quote incident 332 or ring | :02:54. | :02:58.
Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. | :02:59. | :03:05.
Next, what does Brexit mean for hundreds of doctors and nurses | :03:06. | :03:09.
from other EU countries working for the NHS in the East Midlands? | :03:10. | :03:14.
As the government prepares to invoke Article 50, | :03:15. | :03:17.
Britain's formal notice to leave the EU, there are still no | :03:18. | :03:20.
guarantees over the right of medical staff from other EU countries | :03:21. | :03:23.
Our health correspondent Rob Sissons reports | :03:24. | :03:27.
I moved to England two years ago and I moved | :03:28. | :03:34.
I do love Nottingham and I would like to stay here. | :03:35. | :03:39.
She's holding off buying a house in Nottingham | :03:40. | :03:42.
because of the uncertainty around Brexit talks. | :03:43. | :03:46.
We are going to wait and see what that is going to bring us, | :03:47. | :03:49.
but obviously, it's a different country now compared | :03:50. | :03:52.
At a time when the NHS is short of thousands of nurses, | :03:53. | :03:58.
most patients seem to appreciate the contribution of foreign nurses. | :03:59. | :04:03.
The nurse I have, Chiara, she can't do enough for you. | :04:04. | :04:08.
But Chiara says a small minority of patients aren't so welcoming. | :04:09. | :04:16.
It's bad to say, but you feel like you're different | :04:17. | :04:19.
Nurses and midwives from other European Union countries number 215 | :04:20. | :04:27.
But there are still no guarantees about their right to remain | :04:28. | :04:35.
It's uncertainty, because people just don't know | :04:36. | :04:41.
So, they are quite anxious and we are reassuring them. | :04:42. | :04:46.
We are sending lots of messages out to our nurses that they are valuable | :04:47. | :04:49.
It's important that they don't make a knee jerk reaction | :04:50. | :04:53.
I came over from the Netherlands about 20 years ago. | :04:54. | :05:00.
I trained and qualified as a nurse of their and I've been working | :05:01. | :05:03.
Marijke's settled and married with children in Nottingham. | :05:04. | :05:15.
She has a Dutch passport and doesn't want to have to give that up. | :05:16. | :05:18.
If it gets harder to stay here, or if people are forced | :05:19. | :05:21.
into becoming British citizens when they don't really want to, | :05:22. | :05:24.
I think they might well choose not to stay here. | :05:25. | :05:34.
Well, the Royal College of Nursing is extremely concerned | :05:35. | :05:36.
about the impact of Brexit on the number of universes | :05:37. | :05:39.
With me is the RCN regional director, Dr Sheila Marriot. | :05:40. | :05:45.
First of all, we saw in Rob's film the level of uncertainty, | :05:46. | :05:48.
this fear that nurses will leave the NHS, the EU nurses. | :05:49. | :05:52.
Surely, the government can't let that happen. | :05:53. | :06:01.
Well, the nurses that are here from the EU | :06:02. | :06:03.
We know there are about 24,000 vacancies in the UK and many | :06:04. | :06:07.
of those vacancies could be filled by nurses from the EU. | :06:08. | :06:10.
But if they are leaving because they feel uncertain | :06:11. | :06:13.
about security of their jobs then they are unlikely to stay. | :06:14. | :06:18.
And have you seen much of an impact already in terms of EU nurses | :06:19. | :06:21.
Well, we know that our nurses have to apply to the nursing | :06:22. | :06:30.
and midwifery board to make sure that they reach the standards | :06:31. | :06:32.
And we know that the numbers are very significantly down | :06:33. | :06:37.
We would like Theresa May to acknowledge the importance | :06:38. | :06:47.
And, secondly, give them some sense of security that they will be able | :06:48. | :06:53.
Do you think this will have an impact on patient care? | :06:54. | :07:01.
Well, if there are 24,000 vacancies, then however hard the nurses that | :07:02. | :07:04.
are working in the NHS at the moment work, clearly, they can't do | :07:05. | :07:10.
the jobs of two or three nurses to fill those vacancies. | :07:11. | :07:15.
OK, well, Dr Sheila Marriot, thank you for joining us. | :07:16. | :07:19.
The agency which recruits workers for the Sports Direct warehouse | :07:20. | :07:22.
at Shirebrook in Derbyshire has told Parliament they have | :07:23. | :07:25.
made their contracts easier to understand for workers. | :07:26. | :07:29.
TransLine were called to give evidence to the Business Select | :07:30. | :07:32.
Committee which is investigating concerns about the treatment | :07:33. | :07:35.
From Westminster, here's our political editor Tony Roe. | :07:36. | :07:42.
Trade unions say there are 1.6 million agency workers, | :07:43. | :07:45.
and those in low paid jobs are most likely to be the ones | :07:46. | :07:47.
The committee began investigating after a BBC Inside Out programme | :07:48. | :07:53.
on Sports Direct's warehouse in Shirebrook in Derbyshire. | :07:54. | :07:57.
It showed some workers earning less than the minimum wage | :07:58. | :07:59.
as they were docked pay for the time spent going through security. | :08:00. | :08:03.
They also had a six strike and you're out policy | :08:04. | :08:06.
Since the Business Select Committee began its inquiry into future work | :08:07. | :08:10.
practices, Sports Direct has made changes. | :08:11. | :08:13.
No zero hours contracts anymore for shop staff, | :08:14. | :08:15.
no six strikes policy, and changes to security searches. | :08:16. | :08:19.
Where Sports Direct are directly responsible, where it was directly | :08:20. | :08:25.
in the public glare, they've taken action. | :08:26. | :08:27.
Where it's not in the public glare, and then not responsible, | :08:28. | :08:30.
although we claimed them to be responsible as the client, | :08:31. | :08:33.
Today's committee heard agencies described as either criminal, | :08:34. | :08:39.
dodgy or compliant, as in compliant with the law. | :08:40. | :08:41.
Not surprisingly, TransLine believe they are compliant. | :08:42. | :08:51.
We want to be seen out there as a compliant agency, | :08:52. | :08:53.
we've had a big red flashing light over us, and we've done | :08:54. | :08:56.
A lot of things have been done and we're not | :08:57. | :09:00.
publicising them beforehand, so we've had a big shift | :09:01. | :09:02.
of our thought process, and thinking, right, | :09:03. | :09:04.
actually, we need to be at the forefront of this. | :09:05. | :09:06.
Some companies like to use agency staff to respond in changes | :09:07. | :09:10.
in demand but unions want access to those workers to have the chance | :09:11. | :09:13.
It's been revealed that dozens of drivers across the East Midlands | :09:14. | :09:18.
were stopped for using their mobile phones in the first week | :09:19. | :09:21.
following the introduction of tough new penalties. | :09:22. | :09:24.
Between the first and 7th of March, Leicestershire Police | :09:25. | :09:26.
stopped 16 motorists, while officers in | :09:27. | :09:27.
In Derbyshire, 64 drivers were stopped for both mobile phone | :09:28. | :09:33.
So, it's goodbye from me, here's your weather now. | :09:34. | :09:46.
Thank you and good evening. A fairly changeable day today and as we move | :09:47. | :09:52.
through the next few days, it's also looking quite unsettled. | :09:53. | :09:55.
Low-pressure out in the Atlantic driving our weather and we will see | :09:56. | :09:59.
some weather fronts making their way from east to West. It's hard to | :10:00. | :10:03.
pinpoint where they will sit so stage into the forecast. Tonight, | :10:04. | :10:10.
some rain, won't be too heavy, turning increasingly dry into the | :10:11. | :10:17.
early hours, fairly cloudy with some hill fog with an overnight low of | :10:18. | :10:22.
9-10. A fairly mild start to the day tomorrow. We could see some | :10:23. | :10:27.
outbreaks of light rain or drizzle and something a little bit brighter | :10:28. | :10:31.
particularly in the south-east moving into the afternoon but that | :10:32. | :10:36.
rain isn't too far away in the north-west. Temperatures at a | :10:37. | :10:41.
maximum of 15. It'll be fairly breezy. Thursday, similar story, the | :10:42. | :10:46.
rain sitting out in the north-west, moving down to the south-east with | :10:47. | :10:49.
some uncertainty. It will be the warmest day of the week with | :10:50. | :10:54.
temperatures reaching a high of 17. A cold front introduces some fresh | :10:55. | :10:58.
air and rain so turning cooler into the weekend. Here's your | :10:59. | :11:01.
times, but fairly mild for the time of year. This stay tuned for the | :11:02. | :11:04.
national weather forecasts with John Hammond. | :11:05. | :11:09.
Good evening. Your parents might have told you once that life 's not | :11:10. | :11:13.
fair and they were right. He is the proof. Over the next few days some | :11:14. | :11:16.
of us will enjoy some lovely sunshine, temperatures in the low | :11:17. | :11:20.
20s. It will feel like early summer. For others, quite a lot of rain | :11:21. | :11:24.
around and it will feel like late March. This is showers earlier on | :11:25. | :11:29.
today and dampness this evening in the West Country and Wales. That is | :11:30. | :11:33.
heading north eastwards. A different sort of night. A lot of cloud | :11:34. | :11:37.
around, quite damp and misty in places. Cloud cover will prevent | :11:38. | :11:41.
temperatures falling much at all. A much milder my | :11:42. | :11:43. |
