And now the news for the East Midlands.

:00:15.:00:16.

First tonight, the snap election on June the 8th will throw

:00:17.:00:21.

the spotlight onto the East Midlands once again as a key

:00:22.:00:23.

In a moment, I'll be talking to our reporter Navtej Johal,

:00:24.:00:27.

who's been getting reaction in our most marginal seat.

:00:28.:00:29.

But first, this is how the political map looks now -

:00:30.:00:32.

Two years ago, the Conservatives took 18

:00:33.:00:33.

parts of the countryside, while Labour's power lies

:00:34.:00:36.

in the cities and former mining areas, with 14 MPs.

:00:37.:00:39.

The Lib-Dems failed to make an impression.

:00:40.:00:50.

On the streets of Nottingham and Leicester today,

:00:51.:00:52.

people gave their reaction to the unexpected election news.

:00:53.:00:55.

Well, I think it's about time we had one.

:00:56.:01:02.

I didn't think there would be one so soon.

:01:03.:01:07.

I just read one headline that said, a snap annihilation

:01:08.:01:09.

That's probably what they're going with.

:01:10.:01:12.

One vote is one vote and to go through it all again

:01:13.:01:18.

is going to confuse people, so I think it shouldn't

:01:19.:01:20.

Everybody in their lives, they need change.

:01:21.:01:25.

I don't think it was the right action.

:01:26.:01:31.

Unless she felt as a leader but she didn't actually have the support

:01:32.:01:51.

from the country that she felt that she had to do that.

:01:52.:01:52.

I've only just seen it on the train so it's a bit of a shock.

:01:53.:01:56.

I thought she was only here for the long haul to get Brexit over and

:01:57.:02:02.

Anyone that was leading anything, a business or a country,

:02:03.:02:05.

would want to have a mandate and I think that's

:02:06.:02:08.

Well, she wasn't really elected, was she?

:02:09.:02:10.

She was put in there, so this will show how popular she is.

:02:11.:02:14.

I voted for Brexit and I will vote again.

:02:15.:02:19.

I think it's a really good tactic and it's a guaranteed win, isn't it?

:02:20.:02:25.

The Prime Minister's announcement seems to have caught

:02:26.:02:27.

After she repeatedly said it was not an option,

:02:28.:02:34.

she's changed her mind and it is now happening.

:02:35.:02:36.

Navtej Johal has been looking at the reaction of some

:02:37.:02:39.

of our MPs and you've also been to the most marginal

:02:40.:02:42.

Derby North was not only the most marginal seat

:02:43.:02:46.

in the East Midlands, but the most marginal

:02:47.:02:47.

Two years ago, the Conservatives' Amanda Solloway beat the Labour

:02:48.:02:51.

incumbent Chris Williamson by just 41 votes -

:02:52.:02:54.

it was so tightly contested that it took three

:02:55.:02:56.

I went to two very different parts of her constituency to see how

:02:57.:03:05.

people would be voting this time round.

:03:06.:03:07.

Whoever puts forward remain, I'll be voting for them.

:03:08.:03:09.

So Brexit has affected the way you would vote?

:03:10.:03:11.

Well, I'm a Labour voter, but I quite like Theresa May.

:03:12.:03:16.

I probably used to vote Conservative, but now I'd

:03:17.:03:21.

It's just a lifelong, family tradition.

:03:22.:03:33.

I normally vote Conservative and I'll

:03:34.:03:35.

I'm one of those that I'll have to do my

:03:36.:03:41.

Well, Amanda Solloway was in London at a photo call for the marathon

:03:42.:03:47.

earlier today when she heard the news about the election.

:03:48.:03:54.

Well, I hadn't expected it this morning, I have to say.

:03:55.:03:57.

And then, now that I'm hearing about this

:03:58.:03:59.

general election, I can really understand why it's happening.

:04:00.:04:01.

At the moment, economically, the country is doing great.

:04:02.:04:04.

There are lots of good things happening in education.

:04:05.:04:06.

One of the things that I am really driving is

:04:07.:04:08.

And I feel that we are doing more now than we ever have done.

:04:09.:04:13.

So I actually feel that there is a lot is being done by the

:04:14.:04:16.

Government and I am very, very hopeful that we will increase our

:04:17.:04:19.

My majority in my constituency is 41.

:04:20.:04:22.

I've always had a really simple philosophy that all I

:04:23.:04:26.

And I thought it was going to be five years, now two so far.

:04:27.:04:31.

And we will now find out on June 8th whether I have done enough

:04:32.:04:40.

And any reactions from some of our other MPs?

:04:41.:04:44.

Well, it's certainly come as a surprise and

:04:45.:04:46.

On social media, Anna Soubry the Broxtowe Conservative called

:04:47.:04:50.

the Prime Minister's decision brave and principled.

:04:51.:04:53.

And she said winning the General election would give the PM a mandate

:04:54.:04:56.

she needs for the Brexit negotiations.

:04:57.:04:57.

On the other hand, Lilian Greenwood called it a chance to,

:04:58.:05:00.

quote, "Kick out this lousy Tory Government."

:05:01.:05:03.

"Bring it on," says the Labour MP for Nottingham South.

:05:04.:05:06.

And Jon Ashworth, the Shadow Health Secretary

:05:07.:05:08.

a text which indicates that Labour want to campaign on far more

:05:09.:05:12.

than Brexit - the NHS, providing every child with the very

:05:13.:05:14.

best education, and building the economy.

:05:15.:05:21.

There's uncertainty over which of our MPs will decide

:05:22.:05:23.

There's much interest in Rushcliffe's Ken Clarke,

:05:24.:05:29.

He said he'd stand down in 2020, but the election has come

:05:30.:05:35.

early and the Rushcliffe seat survives being carved up

:05:36.:05:37.

in proposed boundary changes, which won't now go ahead.

:05:38.:05:45.

We'll be hearing from more candidates in the coming days

:05:46.:05:48.

and weeks, but if it passes the vote in the House of Commons tomorrow,

:05:49.:05:51.

the election will be just seven weeks away.

:05:52.:05:54.

A Derby man has admitted seven sex offences, including

:05:55.:05:59.

Ilija High from Chaddesden pleaded guilty to attacking three

:06:00.:06:02.

women in Spondon and Darley Abbey, between September 2014

:06:03.:06:04.

The 23-year-old will be back in front of the Crown Court again

:06:05.:06:08.

in June and has been told to expect a significant sentence.

:06:09.:06:16.

A Nottinghamshire family have been speaking about their escape

:06:17.:06:18.

Two crews were called to the blaze in Eastwood

:06:19.:06:22.

Everyone in the property managed to escape,

:06:23.:06:24.

but the house is un-inhabitable, because of smoke damage.

:06:25.:06:27.

The Fire Service believes it began with an electrical fault.

:06:28.:06:37.

I was just watching telly with my kids and we started to smell

:06:38.:06:41.

I just saw it sparking and popping and I just got the kids out and ran

:06:42.:06:58.

them up to my friend's house and I came back and it was ablaze.

:06:59.:07:03.

Onto football and Leicester City's dream of making the Champions League

:07:04.:07:06.

They drew 1-1 with Athletico Madrid at the King Power Stadium.

:07:07.:07:11.

Over now to Colin Hazelden at the King Power Stadium.

:07:12.:07:27.

Heroine failure. All is likely. No one here at Leicester was going to

:07:28.:07:33.

leave wondering what might have happened had they given a little bit

:07:34.:07:39.

more. The staff, the fans in the stand, all with their game. The

:07:40.:07:42.

players around themselves absolutely ragged. It didn't work. There were

:07:43.:07:47.

very nearly turned into a very very nearly turned into a very

:07:48.:07:49.

very nearly turned into a very special night.

:07:50.:07:51.

Leicester were putting on a show, whether this

:07:52.:07:54.

was to be the end of their European journey or not.

:07:55.:07:57.

They needed at least two goals and were looking the more

:07:58.:07:59.

But Atletico had been in two of the last three Champions

:08:00.:08:03.

League finals and they found a killer goal of simplistic quality.

:08:04.:08:06.

With Europe's away goals rule, it meant Leicester needed to score

:08:07.:08:08.

three times in an hour to make the semifinals,

:08:09.:08:10.

Leicester made half-time changes for one final fling,

:08:11.:08:13.

One of the subs, Ben Chilwell, with the ball across, Vardy,

:08:14.:08:17.

Two needed in 30 minutes, Leicester were racking up

:08:18.:08:21.

the attempts on goal and coming close.

:08:22.:08:33.

Their football was no direct, but it had the

:08:34.:08:35.

And the European tour was finally over.

:08:36.:08:40.

The last English team in the competition went out fighting

:08:41.:08:42.

to the end and Atletico Madrid were relieved to stay in.

:08:43.:08:45.

The fans remained behind, savouring every

:08:46.:08:47.

Not knowing when or if they will be back in it.

:08:48.:09:07.

It is the end and it's the end not just of the Champions League, but

:09:08.:09:15.

what has been an absolutely wild to your right. Encompassing the great

:09:16.:09:18.

escape and of course that Premier League title. The question for

:09:19.:09:22.

everyone here is, what on earth happens next to this club? Standard

:09:23.:09:27.

football rules the go back to being just another side in mid-table, but

:09:28.:09:31.

for many years, standard football rules have not applied here. They

:09:32.:09:36.

certainly haven't, Colin. Thank you very much indeed.

:09:37.:09:38.

As we go through the next few with your weather now, here's Alex.

:09:39.:09:46.

As we go through the next few days, we have a settled spell of weather

:09:47.:09:50.

ahead. This was the picture area on today. Blue skies across much of the

:09:51.:09:53.

region. Thank you to our weather watchers for sending in those

:09:54.:10:01.

pictures. As we have a look at the track high pressure is not going

:10:02.:10:03.

anywhere any time soon. We're sticking with settled conditions. A

:10:04.:10:09.

few week weather funds coming in our direction in places, so we may see a

:10:10.:10:15.

little bit of patchy rain. Overnight tonight, clear spells to begin with

:10:16.:10:18.

and that means the temperatures falling away. In towns and cities,

:10:19.:10:25.

we may seize temperatures around three or four Celsius. It may drop

:10:26.:10:31.

below freezing in the countryside. As we go through tomorrow morning,

:10:32.:10:35.

we will start off on a bright note, but then it will turn his air over

:10:36.:10:39.

the course of the day, with thick clouds starting to move down from

:10:40.:10:44.

the north. The odd shower here and there. As we have a look ahead

:10:45.:10:50.

towards Thursday, more of the same. Variable amounts of cloud,

:10:51.:10:54.

temperatures recovering just a little there. High pressure still in

:10:55.:10:57.

charge towards the end the week, with showers. Here is

:10:58.:11:12.

The weather hasn't been too dramatic of late. That is not say it's not

:11:13.:11:18.

without problems. One of those could occur as early as tonight. There

:11:19.:11:22.

could be a sharp rural frost around especially so in the southern half

:11:23.:11:29.

of the British isles. I make the distinction between south and north,

:11:30.:11:33.

further north we have a weather front, a weak affair from the

:11:34.:11:37.

Atlantic. It has enough breeze and cloud to help to keep the

:11:38.:11:41.

temperatures up relative to the south. Now there

:11:42.:11:43.
