And now the news for the East Midlands, I'm Geeta Pendse. | :00:12. | :00:15.
First tonight, Labour Party officials are drawing up plans | :00:16. | :00:18.
to select a new Parliamentary candidate for Nottingham North | :00:19. | :00:21.
after Graham Allen's shock announcement that he won't stand | :00:22. | :00:24.
He told his local party that ill health was the main | :00:25. | :00:29.
Well we'll hear from our General Election reporter | :00:30. | :00:34.
But first, he's been looking back on Graham Allen's career. | :00:35. | :00:41.
A fresh-faced Graham Allen in his early election campaigning days. | :00:42. | :00:45.
The former trade union official has been the area's MP for 30 years. | :00:46. | :00:49.
His political legacy will be his approach | :00:50. | :00:51.
to the deep-seated social problems of the area, for example the high | :00:52. | :00:54.
His thinking to combat intergenerational deprivation - | :00:55. | :00:59.
through the so-called Early Intervention Programme - | :01:00. | :01:02.
Among political colleagues, there was genuine sadness at his decision | :01:03. | :01:07.
All the people, it was so important, all the people said they | :01:08. | :01:12.
were really going to miss him, and I think | :01:13. | :01:14.
that is something that many | :01:15. | :01:16.
politicians cannot say they can hold. | :01:17. | :01:19.
Labour has an 11,800 majority in Nottingham North. | :01:20. | :01:22.
At the last election, when Ed Millband's Labour Party | :01:23. | :01:25.
was losing seats, there was a 5% swing to Graham Allen. | :01:26. | :01:28.
We are looking to get a strong Labour candidate to replace me, and | :01:29. | :01:34.
that will happen within about three or four days. | :01:35. | :01:36.
The question now is whether the voters of Nottingham North will | :01:37. | :01:40.
So who will replace Graham Allen as Labour's candidate? | :01:41. | :01:53.
It is a good question. We have had a clue what Graham was saying there, | :01:54. | :01:59.
he hopes his replacement will be in position to fight this general | :02:00. | :02:02.
election in Nottingham North within, in effect by the end of this week. | :02:03. | :02:06.
That is a clue to the fact that it might be a strong city councillor, a | :02:07. | :02:10.
Nottingham City Council. But there will be huge annoyance and a row if | :02:11. | :02:16.
there is any hint that Jeremy Corbyn and Labour Party mangling... Haida | :02:17. | :02:24.
parish it in a candidate. It happened with Chris Leslie and that | :02:25. | :02:26.
happened in Ashfield, so watch this space. | :02:27. | :02:27.
The thing to remember that when Graham won the seat, she won it for | :02:28. | :02:37.
the Conservatives in 1987 when Mrs Thatcher was in ten Downing St, and | :02:38. | :02:42.
he has turned it in effect to a labour fortress so there is a cute | :02:43. | :02:47.
little legacy there. As for Graham himself, I suspect that he will want | :02:48. | :02:51.
to swap the green benches for the red benches in the House of Lords | :02:52. | :02:55.
arable use the Lauds as an opportunity to promote early | :02:56. | :02:57.
intervention and those projects that were so close to his heart. | :02:58. | :02:59.
In other news, a Derby man's denied a string of terror offences | :03:00. | :03:02.
including planning an attack in the UK. | :03:03. | :03:04.
36-year-old Munir Hassan Mohammed was arrested in December | :03:05. | :03:07.
after officers searched a house on Leopold Street. | :03:08. | :03:10.
Today he appeared at the Old Bailey alongside a co-defendant, | :03:11. | :03:13.
Both pleaded not guilty to researching, planning | :03:14. | :03:18.
and obtaining materials to produce a bomb or poison. | :03:19. | :03:21.
In other news, Nottinghamshire County Council's been fined | :03:22. | :03:26.
?1 million pound after a disabled visitor to Rufford County Park | :03:27. | :03:29.
was hit by a machine used for collecting branches. | :03:30. | :03:33.
The tractor-mounted grabber struck the 71-year-old | :03:34. | :03:37.
while he was on a guided tour in 2015, leaving him with injuries | :03:38. | :03:41.
The Health and Safety Executive ruled the council failed | :03:42. | :03:47.
to adequately plan the work in a public place, putting employees | :03:48. | :03:50.
Next, it's a simple bell, but it's ringing in new hope | :03:51. | :03:56.
That's because people get to ring it to mark the end of their treatment | :03:57. | :04:02.
It's an idea imported from America, and as Victoria Hicks reports, | :04:03. | :04:07.
Harris Wagner hopes this is his last visit to the radiotherapy department | :04:08. | :04:14.
Today marks his 33rd course of treatment. | :04:15. | :04:20.
We sit and talk in the lounge and in the waiting area about, | :04:21. | :04:25.
And, how many treatments do you have? | :04:26. | :04:28.
And, mine is over next week, and, mine is over today, | :04:29. | :04:31.
and everybody looks forward to this day. | :04:32. | :04:34.
After being diagnosed with prostate cancer, | :04:35. | :04:36.
Harris Wagner had his prostate removed in 2009, but when cancer | :04:37. | :04:40.
cells returned, he needed radiotherapy here at the LRI. | :04:41. | :04:45.
And now it's his turn to ring the newly installed bell to mark | :04:46. | :04:49.
Ring the bell three times and we'll all give a big cheer. | :04:50. | :04:54.
And hopefully it's a new life, really. | :04:55. | :05:09.
It has had such a positive impact within the department, all the | :05:10. | :05:14.
patients have wanted to ring it, because it signifies a real turning | :05:15. | :05:18.
point in their life, the end of treatment. | :05:19. | :05:21.
It's the focal point of the reception area and people, | :05:22. | :05:27.
when they finish their treatment, it's something really special. | :05:28. | :05:31.
They cheer and they clap and it's lovely. | :05:32. | :05:34.
That's why I'm hoping there's going to be some people | :05:35. | :05:39.
People here can't praise the staff enough - | :05:40. | :05:44.
this is a happy goodbye - as Harris Wagner leaves feeling | :05:45. | :05:48.
Finally, in our increasingly fast-paced world, it seems | :05:49. | :05:58.
many of us are turning to life in the slow lane. | :05:59. | :06:02.
It's thought there are more boats on our waterways | :06:03. | :06:04.
now than at the height of the Industrial Revolution. | :06:05. | :06:07.
And where there are boaters, there is business. | :06:08. | :06:09.
Amy Harris is in the studio for us tonight. | :06:10. | :06:11.
Yes, Geeta, our waterways are going through what's been described | :06:12. | :06:16.
In the 20th century, many routes were being closed. | :06:17. | :06:21.
Now they are being reopened and regenerated. | :06:22. | :06:24.
There are now 33,000 boats on our canals and rivers, | :06:25. | :06:27.
more than during the Industrial Revolution. | :06:28. | :06:30.
There were 380 million visits to our waterways last year, | :06:31. | :06:33.
And boats actually passed through locks nearly four | :06:34. | :06:38.
So it's easy to see why our businesses are keen to cash in. | :06:39. | :06:44.
Among them is the Mercia Marina in Derbyshire which is seing | :06:45. | :06:47.
On a grey Monday morning, it is perhaps understandably quiet at | :06:48. | :06:55.
Mercia Marina near Willington, but in fact 800,000 visitors a year | :06:56. | :07:00.
flock here, tempted not just by boats but by its restaurants | :07:01. | :07:05.
Business is so brisk, they are expanding. | :07:06. | :07:09.
We are building a piazza which is a 25,000 square foot | :07:10. | :07:13.
building which will have two stories of high-quality offices. | :07:14. | :07:16.
It will have six shops and a restaurant. | :07:17. | :07:19.
The demand has been extremely strong. | :07:20. | :07:21.
We've got some really interesting tenants coming forward. | :07:22. | :07:23.
And they are not the only ones making the most of | :07:24. | :07:27.
This Nottingham boat company has tripled its profits in a year to | :07:28. | :07:35.
?1.5 million through diving in to the high-end market. | :07:36. | :07:41.
Back at Mercia Marina, there are grand plans, too. | :07:42. | :07:44.
It is already a major tourist attraction, but this ?3 million | :07:45. | :07:49.
extension is not the only planned investment. | :07:50. | :07:52.
We are a strong believer in the strength of the East Midlands | :07:53. | :07:55.
as a whole, and we're happy to invest. | :07:56. | :07:57.
We've had huge success so far, and we think we've got a long | :07:58. | :08:00.
We are always serving the community and we're | :08:01. | :08:03.
We are pretty much part of the community. | :08:04. | :08:07.
This expansion is expected to be complete by December, | :08:08. | :08:11.
in time for festive visitors, both on and off the boats. | :08:12. | :08:17.
The increased popularity of our waterways isn't just benefiting | :08:18. | :08:21.
local businesses, but the charity that looks after those rivers | :08:22. | :08:24.
For our region, this means that any of the waterways that flow | :08:25. | :08:29.
through the towns, cities, villages can bring increased facilities, | :08:30. | :08:33.
What we're finding as the charity that looks after the waterways is | :08:34. | :08:38.
that more people are aware of our work and are wanting to support it. | :08:39. | :08:42.
We have had people running the London Marathon for us last | :08:43. | :08:44.
weekend, so it is great as a charity that more people are aware of our | :08:45. | :08:48.
work, looking after the waterways, and want to support that. | :08:49. | :08:52.
And that of course means our canals are in | :08:53. | :08:55.
better shape than ever, handy really as it seems | :08:56. | :08:57.
the popularity of this peaceful pastime isn't | :08:58. | :08:59.
So, it's goodbye from me, but with your weather now, here's Lucy. | :09:00. | :09:13.
Think cycling down, maybe May next week but whatever it is an dropping | :09:14. | :09:20.
off as we move through the next few days. Through tomorrow and Wednesday | :09:21. | :09:23.
because the temperatures just struggling in the single figures. | :09:24. | :09:28.
We'll see some cool night as well, a touch of Frost is likely. There are | :09:29. | :09:32.
if you win the showers to look out for. If you get caught in one of | :09:33. | :09:35.
those they won't be pleasant, they could contain some hail and snow. | :09:36. | :09:39.
And that the nature of shallots, not everybody is seen one. As we move | :09:40. | :09:44.
through the day today, we have seen cool air spending in from the north, | :09:45. | :09:48.
and that means is removed the next few days it really will be fairly | :09:49. | :09:53.
cold. Putting the detail to the map, what a night, plenty of clear skies, | :09:54. | :09:57.
they will be a few patches of cloud, 12 showers, they do have the | :09:58. | :10:01.
potential to be quite wintry. Many others in a dry and clear night | :10:02. | :10:06.
overnight lows between zero and two Celsius in towns and cities, cooler | :10:07. | :10:10.
in the countryside. A bit of Frost to start the day tomorrow, but | :10:11. | :10:13.
plenty of brightness as we move through the day. Sunny spells, | :10:14. | :10:17.
scattered showers, particularly in the afternoon and those showers are | :10:18. | :10:21.
the ones that have the potential to be wintry. Activity is reaching a | :10:22. | :10:25.
maximum of 10 Celsius, it will also be fairly windy. North-westerly | :10:26. | :10:29.
wind. As they moved to Wednesday, a cool start, chance of seeing a touch | :10:30. | :10:34.
of Frost, looking largely like Tuesday, sunny spells and scattered | :10:35. | :10:38.
showers. Don't take those showers completely leisurely, it you can see | :10:39. | :10:42.
one anywhere. Temperatures reaching a maximum of nine Celsius. As we | :10:43. | :10:47.
move into Thursday, a warm front coming down from the north, that | :10:48. | :10:51.
will bring some cloud and a bit more in the wake of patchy outbreaks of | :10:52. | :10:55.
rain. Temperatures slightly recovering as they move through it | :10:56. | :10:59.
to Friday. Another largely cloudy day with highs of 11 Celsius. I | :11:00. | :11:02.
believe you with some rain. More with the national | :11:03. | :11:03.
forecast now. Good evening. It's been turning | :11:04. | :11:12.
colder from the north so far today. It's been cold enough for | :11:13. | :11:15.
significant snow in northern Scotland. This was mid afternoon. | :11:16. | :11:19.
More recently it's been blowing around over the tops of the | :11:20. | :11:24.
mountains. Snow in April not necessarily unusual but it's usually | :11:25. | :11:29.
unwelcome. The colder air coming in behind the front which | :11:30. | :11:30. |
