We're examining that now, on BBC Two. | :00:00. | :00:00.
And now the news for the East Midlands, I'm Dominic Heale. | :00:00. | :00:16.
More vigils of solidarity have been held across the East Midlands | :00:17. | :00:20.
to show support for the victims of Monday night's terror | :00:21. | :00:22.
Messages of peace and unity were delivered by leaders of all faiths. | :00:23. | :00:28.
And today, across this region, a minute's silence was observed | :00:29. | :00:32.
Flowers were handed out, a symbol of peace for those who lost their | :00:33. | :00:54.
lives. These Nottingham teenagers were at the arena. The are believed | :00:55. | :01:00.
to have escaped unharmed, but are in shock at how close they came. I | :01:01. | :01:08.
haven't got words for it yet. It hasn't sunk in. It's scary. Why was | :01:09. | :01:14.
it important to you to come to light? To get the message across | :01:15. | :01:18.
that we need to stand together. And stand together they did. This was a | :01:19. | :01:25.
multi-faith vigil with all speakers encouraging people to oppose hatred. | :01:26. | :01:30.
This is about love, love that overcomes hate, love that unites and | :01:31. | :01:35.
love that compels us to come together to act with and Ford each | :01:36. | :01:38.
other for all people in this great city. We feel sorry for the innocent | :01:39. | :01:46.
people who have been injured and died out there. | :01:47. | :01:50.
It's a problem we all share whatever our race, nationality or religion. | :01:51. | :01:55.
The love we have will overcome any hate. | :01:56. | :01:58.
No matter your nationality or race we should come together and show | :01:59. | :02:02.
that hatred will not win. A reminder of the threat was | :02:03. | :02:06.
constantly present, armed police patrolling the streets while the | :02:07. | :02:12.
threat level remains critical. The officers have been overwhelmed | :02:13. | :02:16.
with messages of support from the public. They offer a real | :02:17. | :02:20.
reassurance message. This evening vigils were held in | :02:21. | :02:25.
Loughborough and outside a mosque in Leicester where prayers were said | :02:26. | :02:29.
for peace. There's been one method which has come over loud and clear | :02:30. | :02:35.
at this vigil this evening. That is this, acts of terror will not divide | :02:36. | :02:38.
communities. They will bring them together. | :02:39. | :02:50.
A minute silence was held across the East Midlands today as crowds fell | :02:51. | :02:58.
silent at 11am in shopping malt, parks and all public spaces. | :02:59. | :03:03.
silence was also observed in schools. | :03:04. | :03:06.
Teachers have said they know the bomb attack, which targeted | :03:07. | :03:08.
youngsters and their parents, has especially upset pupils. | :03:09. | :03:10.
At 11 o'clock, all the classes start at St John Horton Academy | :03:11. | :03:23.
in Kirkhallam in Derbyshire for students to pay | :03:24. | :03:25.
These year-nine pupils said it was important than to spend time | :03:26. | :03:29.
It's just about remembering all of the people that died | :03:30. | :03:33.
I was just thinking about everyone's parents and what they're | :03:34. | :03:38.
Just thinking about their sadness and grief. | :03:39. | :03:44.
Not a lot of recognition has been sent to the families of people | :03:45. | :03:49.
who have lost family members in the attack. | :03:50. | :03:53.
Across the county border in Nottingham, sixth form students | :03:54. | :03:55.
at Bilborough College also stood in silence, many said | :03:56. | :03:58.
they were affected by the tragedy because so many of the victims | :03:59. | :04:01.
It's very close to us because we would go to a concert | :04:02. | :04:06.
like that and it can happen out of anywhere, and I think just | :04:07. | :04:09.
to show some respect to the people, we should also stand together | :04:10. | :04:12.
This is been an attack on freedom, our Western values but also on young | :04:13. | :04:19.
people and that is what personally hit me so hard. | :04:20. | :04:21.
My mum and my grandparents are really like, no, | :04:22. | :04:26.
you can't go to any more, because it's really, | :04:27. | :04:28.
In Leicester, at a memorial rather than in a school setting, | :04:29. | :04:32.
but young people also thinking of their peers killed | :04:33. | :04:34.
It's important to give respect to those who went to the concert | :04:35. | :04:39.
who went with happiness and came back with sadness because they lost | :04:40. | :04:43.
When we were doing this moment of silence, I was just thinking | :04:44. | :04:50.
about all the times that people have come out in support from our | :04:51. | :04:53.
religion and my faith and I was thinking that those people | :04:54. | :04:56.
are innocent and their lives did not need to be taken. | :04:57. | :04:59.
They were good people and what that man is, he has no excuse, | :05:00. | :05:02.
so this one-minute silence is just remembering those people | :05:03. | :05:05.
and giving them happiness, because they deserve it. | :05:06. | :05:11.
Immigration figures were released today, revealing a slight drop | :05:12. | :05:13.
in the total net migration figure for the UK. | :05:14. | :05:16.
It's a subject likely to be addressed in the last two | :05:17. | :05:22.
weeks of campaigning for the General Election, which gets | :05:23. | :05:25.
Our Social Affairs Correspondent, Jeremy Ball reports | :05:26. | :05:29.
How should we control freedom of movement? | :05:30. | :05:33.
Immigration has always been contentious, but the next | :05:34. | :05:35.
governemnt's going to face some tough decisions about who this | :05:36. | :05:38.
Our journey begins in one of Nottinghamshire's former pit | :05:39. | :05:44.
towns and at our first stop, it's market day. | :05:45. | :05:49.
My lad can't get a job, he employed two Poles who got rid of him. | :05:50. | :05:54.
There's not enough jobs for our people to get nowadays. | :05:55. | :05:57.
We've always had immigrants, foreigners who support us the way | :05:58. | :06:00.
they do, and they are putting stuff back into the country. | :06:01. | :06:04.
It's pretty clear that a lot of voters are worried that | :06:05. | :06:07.
immigration is damaging their communities, putting | :06:08. | :06:08.
pressure on local services and driving down wages, too. | :06:09. | :06:11.
On the other hand, employers from farms to carers often | :06:12. | :06:15.
depend on migrant workers, and many experts argue that | :06:16. | :06:21.
immigrants are more likely to be paying tax then claiming | :06:22. | :06:23.
If you want to know if they think, take the train to Hysen Green, | :06:24. | :06:28.
where at one off-licence I found out smile he came here from Afghanistan. | :06:29. | :06:31.
I work here full-time so that I can pay tax. | :06:32. | :06:34.
Do you feel like you're making a contribution? | :06:35. | :06:36.
Ajmal's local customers come from as far afield | :06:37. | :06:43.
From education to the health service, at the Queens Medical | :06:44. | :06:53.
Centre, many people are worried about foreign patients | :06:54. | :06:55.
getting treatment here, but nursing leaders are more | :06:56. | :06:57.
They are keeping the National Health Service going, so without them, | :06:58. | :07:00.
Shouldn't we just give those jobs to British nurses instead? | :07:01. | :07:04.
We need foreign nurses to continue to come. | :07:05. | :07:06.
They are plugging huge gaps that we've got, because we haven't | :07:07. | :07:09.
So what do they think about that down the line in suburban Beeston? | :07:10. | :07:12.
We need as many outsiders coming in to do the work that | :07:13. | :07:15.
unfortunately ours are not able or not capable or not willing to do. | :07:16. | :07:19.
The country is too small, physically. | :07:20. | :07:23.
Getting immigration right is a difficult balance | :07:24. | :07:28.
That all depends on who wins on polling day. | :07:29. | :07:37.
More than one thousand men from India, who lost their lives | :07:38. | :07:39.
in World War One, have been remembered at a special | :07:40. | :07:42.
The Indian Labour Corps had a non-combat role, | :07:43. | :07:47.
providing service work to the British Army. | :07:48. | :07:51.
Today's event happened at the same time as a similar | :07:52. | :07:53.
one thousands of miles away, in Delhi. | :07:54. | :07:55.
Over 200 people, including children and dignitaries, | :07:56. | :08:00.
gathered in Victoria Park in Leicester to commemorate | :08:01. | :08:03.
Pupils from nearby schools tied messages of thanks to those | :08:04. | :08:09.
I wrote thank you for giving your lives for us and for your braveness, | :08:10. | :08:18.
As the service got underway, at the same time, thousands | :08:19. | :08:23.
of miles away in Delhi, a similar service was taking place, | :08:24. | :08:28.
connecting the two memorials, which were designed by the same | :08:29. | :08:31.
architect, together for the first time. | :08:32. | :08:34.
Over one million Indian soldiers, officers and troops participated | :08:35. | :08:40.
but what is not commemorated very often is the contribution made | :08:41. | :08:42.
by the Labour Corps and as part of the larger labour corps that | :08:43. | :08:45.
fought in World War I, the Indian Labour Corps | :08:46. | :08:49.
Children came with placards, each bearing the name of a member | :08:50. | :08:53.
We should remember them because they have done it for us | :08:54. | :09:02.
We have to remember all these people that died and fought to bring peace. | :09:03. | :09:09.
They've been known as the Unremembered, | :09:10. | :09:14.
the 1,174 men from the Indian Labour Corps. | :09:15. | :09:17.
The workers who died supporting the soldiers during World War I. | :09:18. | :09:21.
So, it's goodbye from me, - but with your weather | :09:22. | :09:34.
Thank you. As we go through the next few days we lose some of the high | :09:35. | :09:45.
temperatures and sunshine. But still not looking too bad over bank | :09:46. | :09:51.
holiday weekend. Earlier on today beautiful sunshine across the whole | :09:52. | :09:55.
of the East Midlands, barely a cloud in the sky. A little hazy as we went | :09:56. | :10:02.
through the sap to be progressed in. High still in charge of the weather, | :10:03. | :10:06.
but low-pressure starting to move in. That could bring some downpours | :10:07. | :10:13.
on Saturday. Looking at the detail overnight tonight, barely a cloud in | :10:14. | :10:19.
the sky. A starry night ahead. Maggie and humid. Quite | :10:20. | :10:22.
uncomfortable. Those around 13 or 14 Celsius. In 11 or 12 in the | :10:23. | :10:31.
countryside. We are expecting very high levels of UV tomorrow so take | :10:32. | :10:35.
precautions. Take your suncream with you. It's a repeat performance | :10:36. | :10:41.
tomorrow. A bright and sunny note, a little bit of cloud building up over | :10:42. | :10:45.
the course of the day, here and there. Again, feeling quite humid. | :10:46. | :10:51.
As we have a look ahead to Saturday we see that cold front moving in, we | :10:52. | :10:57.
see those patchy showers, possibly thundery rain, temperatures not | :10:58. | :11:01.
doing too badly. High-pressure returns next week. I leave you with | :11:02. | :11:03.
the Outlook. Next You would expect strong sunshine at | :11:04. | :11:15.
this time of year, but it has been stronger than you would normally | :11:16. | :11:19.
expect, and that continues tomorrow. It has been the hottest day of the | :11:20. | :11:28.
year so far. I suspect we might beat those temperatures tomorrow. We have | :11:29. | :11:33.
had made 20s for many, barely a cloud in the sky. This is how it | :11:34. | :11:39.
looked in Cornwall this afternoon, and a beautiful sunset as | :11:40. | :11:40. |
