And now the news for the East Midlands, I'm Geeta Pendse.

0:00:140:00:16

East Midlands Today can reveal that several hundred prisoners

0:00:160:00:20

are being taken to hospital every year in this region.

0:00:200:00:22

Many inmates needed ambulances after being attacked

0:00:220:00:24

or overdosing on drugs.

0:00:240:00:28

And crews even had to help some women prisoners give birth.

0:00:280:00:31

Our social affairs correspondent, Jeremy Ball, reports.

0:00:310:00:35

Our prisons are calling ambulances, around three times a day and more

0:00:350:00:38

often than not they end up taking an inmate to hospital.

0:00:380:00:41

We've been given details after an freedom of information request

0:00:410:00:43

to the East Midlands Ambulance Service.

0:00:430:00:47

Here's where those crews went - to 14 jails and young offenders

0:00:470:00:50

institutions in the area covered by EMAS and to the Morton Hall

0:00:500:00:53

immigration centre.

0:00:530:00:56

In all, there were well over 3000 incidents over the last three years.

0:00:560:00:59

We wanted to know how many of those calls were for deliberate attacks.

0:00:590:01:04

There's been persistent concern about violence,

0:01:040:01:05

particularly here in Nottingham.

0:01:050:01:11

The figures show this prison needed more ambulances

0:01:110:01:13

than any other East Midlands jail.

0:01:130:01:20

And across the region, more than 300 calls were recorded as assaults,

0:01:200:01:23

traumatic injuries or lacerations and burns.

0:01:230:01:25

This is a terrible and horrendous catalogue of violence.

0:01:250:01:27

It's happening all too often, we see assaults every single day

0:01:270:01:29

in the region's prisons.

0:01:290:01:31

That should create concern for all of us because, as these figures

0:01:310:01:34

show, these problems spill out from the prison and put pressure

0:01:340:01:42

on other public services.

0:01:420:01:43

Some ambulance crews dealt with things like heart attacks,

0:01:430:01:45

which might happen anywhere.

0:01:460:01:46

But a lot of calls in that three-year period were prompted

0:01:460:01:49

by drugs or self-harm.

0:01:490:01:50

The figures show 335 incidents that were recorded

0:01:500:01:52

as overdose or poisoning.

0:01:520:01:58

Another 256 were listed as psychiatric or suicide attempt.

0:01:580:02:00

And there were 18 calls for pregnancy or childbirth cases

0:02:000:02:03

at Foston Hall women's prison.

0:02:030:02:04

The cost of an average ambulance call is more than ?200.

0:02:040:02:06

The Ministry of Justice says staff in prisons are trained to deal

0:02:060:02:10

with emergencies and the decision to ring the Ambulance Service is

0:02:100:02:17

made by health-care professionals.

0:02:170:02:23

The family of the late Lord Janner say the independent inquiry into sex

0:02:230:02:26

abuse should drop its investigations into claims he sexually

0:02:260:02:28

abused children.

0:02:280:02:29

It follows the announcement that six alleged victims have

0:02:290:02:35

dropped their civil case against the peer's estate.

0:02:350:02:37

Lord Janner died after the prosecution case

0:02:370:02:39

against him had started.

0:02:390:02:42

The situation has changed so significantly that now

0:02:420:02:43

we would like the enquiry to stop a strand into an individual

0:02:430:02:50

who the facts have changed about, there is no criminal case,

0:02:500:02:56

no civil case, and we want the inquiry to do what the inquiry

0:02:560:02:59

is meant to do and the terms say, which is to look into institutions.

0:02:590:03:03

But lawyers for child abuse victims say the allegations

0:03:030:03:05

against the former Leicester MP remain and will still be

0:03:050:03:08

investigated by the independent inquiry.

0:03:080:03:15

A man's been charged with murder after the body of a woman was found

0:03:150:03:18

at a house in Derby.

0:03:180:03:20

Police were called to Pear Tree Crescent just before 10:00pm

0:03:200:03:22

Saturday and found the woman's body inside.

0:03:220:03:23

A 35-year-old man, Atual Mustafa, was arrested.

0:03:230:03:28

He appeared before magistrates this morning and will be back at

0:03:280:03:31

Nottingham Crown Court on Wednesday.

0:03:310:03:34

The family of a man who's died after a battle with cancer

0:03:340:03:37

say they now have to decide what to do with the thousands

0:03:370:03:40

of pounds raised for his treatment.

0:03:400:03:42

Former Nottinghamshire policeman Phil Hogg was diagnosed

0:03:420:03:44

with pancreatic cancer less than two years ago.

0:03:440:03:47

His family managed to raise ?43,000 to help send him

0:03:470:03:52

to a clinic in Germany.

0:03:520:03:54

But sadly he died last Thursday.

0:03:540:03:58

Police in Derby are investigating after a body was found

0:03:580:04:01

in the River Derwent this morning.

0:04:010:04:02

In a statement, they say they were called by a member

0:04:020:04:05

of the public, just before 9:00am, who had spotted the body

0:04:050:04:08

near St Mary's Bridge.

0:04:080:04:09

It's not yet clear if there are any suspicious circumstances

0:04:090:04:13

and enquiries are ongoing.

0:04:130:04:15

Police say they're concerned for the safety of a woman

0:04:150:04:18

who's gone missing.

0:04:180:04:19

19-year-old Shannon Parkin was last seen in the Mansfield

0:04:190:04:21

area last Thursday.

0:04:210:04:23

Anyone with information is asked to contact police.

0:04:230:04:29

Next, part of Leicester has been transformed over the weekend

0:04:290:04:32

with giant faces and murals painted on some major buildings.

0:04:320:04:34

Graffiti artists from around the world were allowed

0:04:340:04:36

to leave their mark as part of an international festival.

0:04:360:04:40

Simon Ward has been taking a look.

0:04:400:04:45

Some of the new legal graffiti in Leicester is massive,

0:04:450:04:48

towering above the streets of the Cultural Quarter.

0:04:480:04:52

The festival, called Bring the Paint, saw more than 150

0:04:520:04:55

artists getting involved.

0:04:550:04:57

Pablo came from Germany to be part of the event.

0:04:570:05:00

I was really happy and glad to get a chance to do this.

0:05:000:05:04

This is an incredible line-up, really the high society

0:05:040:05:07

of the graffiti scene.

0:05:070:05:08

Of course I want to take part of it, it's a real pleasure and an honour.

0:05:080:05:11

Music, skateboarding, BMX and enjoying food and drink

0:05:110:05:15

were also part of the festival mix.

0:05:150:05:20

One of the things about the festival, we really wanted to do

0:05:200:05:23

something that really celebrated a lot of the creative

0:05:230:05:28

work that is happening in Leicester at the moment,

0:05:280:05:30

so we thought it was a good opportunity to use

0:05:300:05:33

the Cultural Quarter as a canvas, invite a lot of artists to come

0:05:330:05:36

and leave a mark here.

0:05:360:05:38

Most of these art works will stay and the paint should last for years.

0:05:380:05:41

It should be really good, it brightens the area up,

0:05:410:05:43

you've got lots of grey buildings and concrete, so in the Cultural

0:05:430:05:48

Quarter it's nice to have a bit of visual culture on the walls as well.

0:05:480:05:52

Organisers are so pleased they're considering another graffiti

0:05:520:05:54

festival in the city next year.

0:05:540:06:01

A Nottinghamshire skate park which closed because it was unsafe

0:06:010:06:04

has reopened after months of renovation by volunteers.

0:06:040:06:06

A team of ten painted and repaired the Radcliffe-on-Trent skate park

0:06:060:06:12

in their spare time.

0:06:120:06:14

The new facility is now suitable for bikes, skaters,

0:06:140:06:17

boarders and scooter-users.

0:06:170:06:20

Most of the ramps were broken in some way, shape or form.

0:06:200:06:23

They either had big holes in them or they were

0:06:230:06:26

just worn and not really rideable.

0:06:260:06:28

The ones that were just about rideable were a bit dangerous.

0:06:280:06:32

It's been hard work but it pays off when

0:06:320:06:34

you see lots of people using it.

0:06:340:06:39

Now, you may already be a fan, but Nottingham's Food Assembly

0:06:390:06:42

scheme is going from strength to strength.

0:06:420:06:43

It enables the city's shoppers to easily source artisan

0:06:430:06:46

and locally made food.

0:06:460:06:47

In fact, it's doing so well it's had to move to bigger premises.

0:06:470:06:50

Elise Chamberlain reports.

0:06:500:06:56

Hard at work for the next batch of orders for jams and jellies

0:06:560:06:59

straight from the plot to the pot, Alice is one of the latest

0:06:590:07:02

food producers to join the Nottingham Food Assembly,

0:07:020:07:04

a click-and-collect service for food which, on average,

0:07:040:07:06

has travelled just 17 miles.

0:07:060:07:09

People are more aware of where the food comes

0:07:090:07:12

from and what's been put into it.

0:07:120:07:18

When I open a jar of jam, I know exactly what has gone into it

0:07:180:07:21

and I can point to exactly which fruit bush it's come from.

0:07:210:07:24

The assembly's now been running for ten months.

0:07:240:07:29

Organisers Bex, Shona and Kimberley have already seen the amount

0:07:290:07:31

of producers treble - and it's continuing to rise.

0:07:310:07:33

Nearly 42,000 has gone back into the local economy

0:07:330:07:35

since we started the Food Assembly, which we think is really great,

0:07:350:07:38

that's over 91% of all the sales go back into the local economy.

0:07:380:07:42

83% goes to the producer.

0:07:420:07:44

It's also moved to Primary Studios - a bigger venue for

0:07:440:07:47

a growing community.

0:07:470:07:48

It's not got that kind of faceless supermarket feel.

0:07:480:07:52

You're actually meeting them and seeing what happens to make that

0:07:520:07:54

food that goes on your plate.

0:07:540:07:58

With almost 350 products in its catalogue already,

0:07:580:08:01

they're now looking into delivery options in the future.

0:08:010:08:04

Elise Chamberlain, BBC East Midlands Today, Nottingham.

0:08:040:08:09

That's your news, it's goodbye from me and time

0:08:090:08:12

for the weather with Rebecca Wood.

0:08:120:08:17

Good evening.

0:08:170:08:18

It's been a typical bank holiday Monday, we've seen plenty

0:08:180:08:21

of rain out and about.

0:08:210:08:22

Our Weather Watchers have been catching those scenes,

0:08:220:08:24

plenty of cloud around and some mist, some fog.

0:08:240:08:26

It has been rather wet.

0:08:260:08:28

We will continue to see that theme at times through the new working

0:08:280:08:31

week but there will also be some sunny spells.

0:08:310:08:34

As for tonight, we see the area of showers clearing away

0:08:340:08:37

to the north and east.

0:08:370:08:38

Behind that, we could get a bit of fog developing in some spots,

0:08:380:08:41

but it will be clearer further south and west and slightly fresher

0:08:410:08:44

than it has been of late, so perhaps a little bit more

0:08:440:08:47

comfortable for sleeping overnight tonight.

0:08:470:08:49

Temperatures between 13-14 Celsius.

0:08:490:08:51

We start tomorrow with a ridge of high pressure starting to build

0:08:510:08:54

and that there is this weather system that will work its way

0:08:540:09:00

in from the west, along that some showers and behind it we'll start

0:09:000:09:03

to get the improvement, but it will start to feel a little fresher.

0:09:030:09:06

There will be some sunny spells through the start of the day
