And now the news for
the East Midlands, | 0:00:13 | 0:00:15
I'm Dominic Heale. | 0:00:15 | 0:00:17
Good evening. | 0:00:17 | 0:00:19
A mass protest has taken place
against plans to expand | 0:00:19 | 0:00:21
Magna Park in Leicestershire. | 0:00:21 | 0:00:23
Dozens of people staged
the demonstration outside | 0:00:23 | 0:00:32
tonight's planning meeting. | 0:00:32 | 0:00:34
Harborough District Council
is discussing doubling | 0:00:34 | 0:00:35
the size of the distribution
centre near Lutterworth. | 0:00:35 | 0:00:39
So many people wanted to attend,
the authority is holding the meeting | 0:00:39 | 0:00:42
in a giant aircraft hangar. | 0:00:42 | 0:00:44
It started at half past six this
evening and is STILL going on. | 0:00:44 | 0:00:48
In a moment we'll talk to our
reporter Tim Parker who's there. | 0:00:48 | 0:00:51
But first Giles Taylor has been
looking at the plans. | 0:00:51 | 0:00:58
Along the busy A5
in Leicestershire it | 0:00:58 | 0:01:00
sits Magna Park. | 0:01:00 | 0:01:02
Already one of the biggest sites of | 0:01:02 | 0:01:05
its kind in Europe, it is home
to some big-name brands like Argos, | 0:01:05 | 0:01:08
Asda and others. | 0:01:08 | 0:01:09
It is ideally located
to access the M1 and in 69. | 0:01:09 | 0:01:12
New plans have been
submitted for expansion. | 0:01:12 | 0:01:15
Residents are unhappy. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:19
It will be overbearing
on the villages. | 0:01:19 | 0:01:21
It is going to bring
extra traffic at extra | 0:01:21 | 0:01:25
pollution. | 0:01:25 | 0:01:28
It is also going to bring
jobs that we don't need. | 0:01:28 | 0:01:33
The proposals are into sections
of the northern side. | 0:01:33 | 0:01:35
Builders say if approved,
it will bring thousands | 0:01:35 | 0:01:38
more jobs to the area,
but for those living | 0:01:38 | 0:01:40
in the nearby villages,
it is | 0:01:40 | 0:01:42 | |
a step too far. | 0:01:42 | 0:01:46
Over 80% of people don't
live around here who | 0:01:46 | 0:01:48
work at the Park, because the number
of people unemployed is so low. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:52
We are going to be covered
and overrun with warehousing | 0:01:52 | 0:01:56
and I reckon we are
going to have a surplus. | 0:01:56 | 0:02:00
Campaigners have already lost
previous battles against expansion, | 0:02:00 | 0:02:04
and were tonight's plans
recommended for approval, | 0:02:04 | 0:02:06
they fear the result
may well be the same. | 0:02:06 | 0:02:16
That meeting is still going on. It's
thought the decision will be made | 0:02:33 | 0:02:36
this evening. | 0:02:36 | 0:02:37
Well, let's hear join
our reporter Tim Parker | 0:02:37 | 0:02:39
who's at Bruntingthorpe airfield
where tonight's | 0:02:39 | 0:02:41
meeting is being held. | 0:02:41 | 0:02:45
The meeting continues this evening,
over 300 pages in the planning | 0:02:45 | 0:02:51
document. 30 speakers so far. We've
just taken a short break. I have the | 0:02:51 | 0:02:57
chair of the parish council with me.
How do you feel the meeting is going | 0:02:57 | 0:03:02
so far? You've spoken against the
proposals. There is an air of | 0:03:02 | 0:03:08
anticipation right now. It's all a
little bit uncertain, but seemingly | 0:03:08 | 0:03:13
positive. We've put forward strong
arguments from the developers have | 0:03:13 | 0:03:17
been slightly uncertain of how to
respond. Do you feel you can | 0:03:17 | 0:03:21
convince people here tonight to
reject the proposals? They certainly | 0:03:21 | 0:03:28
have been convincing questions from
councillors, digging deeper into | 0:03:28 | 0:03:32
what can be committed. I think,
ultimately, maybe they are afraid of | 0:03:32 | 0:03:36
the appeal. That's really sad if
that is the case. Thank you for | 0:03:36 | 0:03:45
joining us. I let you get back to
the meeting. In a statement the | 0:03:45 | 0:03:50
developers, says the proposals will
deliver a significant number of | 0:03:50 | 0:03:59
jobs, and that they are listening to
the concerns of local residents. | 0:03:59 | 0:04:07
Two men have been charged with four
counts of burglary and one of theft | 0:04:07 | 0:04:11
following a series of attacks on
cash points across the Midlands. | 0:04:11 | 0:04:18
It follows a police investigation
into dozens of attacks on ATM | 0:04:18 | 0:04:21
machines across the East Midlands. | 0:04:21 | 0:04:24
Two men arrested in Warwickshire
are still in custody. | 0:04:24 | 0:04:28
The two women were arrested
in Lutterworth in Leicestershire. | 0:04:28 | 0:04:30
They have been released. | 0:04:30 | 0:04:37
Figures out today show a shocking
increase in the number | 0:04:37 | 0:04:40
of people in the East Midlands
who died last winter. | 0:04:40 | 0:04:42
It's thought that was partly
because the flu jab failed | 0:04:42 | 0:04:44
to sufficiently protect the elderly. | 0:04:44 | 0:04:46
At least 3,000 more people died
between December and March | 0:04:46 | 0:04:48
than in the summer months. | 0:04:48 | 0:04:49
Most of those deaths were due
to respiratory problems. | 0:04:49 | 0:04:54
Other advice would be around keeping
warm, making sure your house is | 0:04:54 | 0:04:59
heated to at least 18 degrees.
Layering up when you go outside. | 0:04:59 | 0:05:04
Keeping an eye on elderly relatives.
Visiting a pharmacist if you feel | 0:05:04 | 0:05:09
unwell. Bringing the GP if you feel
very unwell. | 0:05:09 | 0:05:20
There has been an angry reaction
from the news that Notre Dame will | 0:05:20 | 0:05:23
be blocked from becoming European
capital of culture after the EU | 0:05:23 | 0:05:26
announced today that Europe to
tackle UK cities will no longer be | 0:05:26 | 0:05:31
able to take part. -- Nottingham
will be blocked. Hundreds of | 0:05:31 | 0:05:34
thousands of pounds has been spent
preparing the bed. As this come as a | 0:05:34 | 0:05:43
shock? It's a big surprise to hear
this news. A letter was sent to DCM | 0:05:43 | 0:05:50
S, the government department dealing
with the process. The next 24 hours | 0:05:50 | 0:05:58
are critical. We've been on the
phone today with the DCM S, there is | 0:05:58 | 0:06:04
a dialogue taking place. We will
have more clarity tomorrow. Couldn't | 0:06:04 | 0:06:11
these difficulties have been
foreseen? In 2019 we will be leaving | 0:06:11 | 0:06:18
the EU?
It's always been believed this | 0:06:18 | 0:06:20
process would continue until Brexit
had been concluded. It was assumed | 0:06:20 | 0:06:25
that it would take place. Really now
it is about resolving the situation. | 0:06:25 | 0:06:31
The government have committed to the
five cities that have entered the | 0:06:31 | 0:06:35
process and said they will support
them and help them to realise | 0:06:35 | 0:06:39
cultural ambitions. Our job now is
to represent Nottingham as well as | 0:06:39 | 0:06:44
we can. You seem to be saying it's
not over until it is over. There is | 0:06:44 | 0:06:53
still an opportunity. The next 24
hours are critical. Beyond that we | 0:06:53 | 0:06:58
hope our bid, which we think is
strong and is being driven by that | 0:06:58 | 0:07:03
great collaboration across the city,
we still want to do something with | 0:07:03 | 0:07:06
that. Briefly to end, lessons have
been learned, progress has been | 0:07:06 | 0:07:14
made, that won't be wasted? Not at
all. We will carry this forward and | 0:07:14 | 0:07:20
deliver elements of our bid anyway. | 0:07:20 | 0:07:22
We hear a lot these days
about driverless cars. | 0:07:22 | 0:07:24
But one Nottingham-based company
is going a step further | 0:07:24 | 0:07:26
and developing a flying car. | 0:07:26 | 0:07:28
At the moment the projected
cost is £1.5 million. | 0:07:28 | 0:07:30
But the vehicles could be in
production within just a few years. | 0:07:30 | 0:07:33
Quentin Rayner reports. | 0:07:33 | 0:07:39
The idea of a flying car is not
as far-fetched as you would think. | 0:07:39 | 0:07:42
Have few years ago James May
apply in the Aero car, | 0:07:42 | 0:07:45
developed in America in the 1940s. | 0:07:45 | 0:07:48
Petrol powered, its wings folded
back when used as a car and it flew | 0:07:48 | 0:07:52
at 100 mph with a range
of 300 miles. | 0:07:52 | 0:07:55
Absolutely fabulous. | 0:07:55 | 0:08:01
Almost 30 years later,
are we about to see the new version | 0:08:01 | 0:08:04
take-off as a possible idea? | 0:08:04 | 0:08:09
Those behind it think so. | 0:08:09 | 0:08:16
This company based in not say
they're flying car will be able to | 0:08:16 | 0:08:19
take off vertically of driveways or
even water. Part of the journey | 0:08:19 | 0:08:25
could be in the air or on road where
you have landed. You would have two | 0:08:25 | 0:08:29
be flown by a pilot, but eventually
it could sell half-life. Still | 0:08:29 | 0:08:34
tempted? Here are some other
specifications? It will carry to be | 0:08:34 | 0:08:39
blunt cruiser 200 mph. It could fly
for up to an hour with a range of 75 | 0:08:39 | 0:08:44
miles. It is being developed with
the University of Derby. One is £10 | 0:08:44 | 0:08:54
million of investment secured it is
held for full-size operation models | 0:08:54 | 0:08:58
will be certified to fly by 2020.
Back in the 1940s the car never | 0:08:58 | 0:09:07
really took off because of the need
for eight separate licences to | 0:09:07 | 0:09:11
operate it. Maybe now is the time to
land this big idea. | 0:09:11 | 0:09:15
That's your news. | 0:09:15 | 0:09:17
So, it's goodbye from me
but with your weather | 0:09:17 | 0:09:19
now, here's Anna. | 0:09:19 | 0:09:23
Thank you, Dominic. It was rather
mild earlier in the week, but the | 0:09:23 | 0:09:28
winds have started to ease and it
feels much colder. That is the trend | 0:09:28 | 0:09:33
over the next few days. Thank you
for this photograph. A sunset | 0:09:33 | 0:09:39
earlier. Keep your pictures coming
in. It is becoming increasingly | 0:09:39 | 0:09:46
cold, they will be plenty of autumn
sunshine. It's also going to be | 0:09:46 | 0:09:51
mostly dry. Dry out there, we've got
clear skies that will allow tempted | 0:09:51 | 0:09:57
to drop away. Winds have eased. Lows
of three Celsius, that's towns and | 0:09:57 | 0:10:03
cities. It will get lower than that
in rural areas. Perhaps low enough | 0:10:03 | 0:10:09
for a touch of frost in sheltered
spots. A chilly start to Friday. | 0:10:09 | 0:10:14
Staying cold throughout the day,
plenty of sunshine, it should be dry | 0:10:14 | 0:10:19
for most of us. One or two isolated
she was pushing in from the North | 0:10:19 | 0:10:27
West. Mostly dry, highs of 7
degrees. It is Friday night that | 0:10:27 | 0:10:30
will be particularly cold with the
risk of a few showers that could | 0:10:30 | 0:10:34
turn wintry. A cold start on
Saturday, widespread frost expected. | 0:10:34 | 0:10:41
We have this risk of one or two
showers and if they do manage to | 0:10:41 | 0:10:47
make their way towards us, these
could be wintry on Saturday. On the | 0:10:47 | 0:10:54
whole, dry, sunny, but chilly. 5
degrees is the maximum temperature. | 0:10:54 | 0:10:59
Here is your outlook for the next
few days. | 0:10:59 | 0:11:02 |
