News at Six. It's goodbye from me. On BBC One we

:00:00.:00:00.

The schoolboy who disappeared 30 years ago in Croydon,

:00:00.:00:00.

His sister appeals for a key witness to come forward.

:00:00.:00:10.

The biggest part is hope that he's still out there.

:00:11.:00:14.

Does investing more in "meals on wheels" help improve

:00:15.:00:24.

In its 150th year, I'm at the London Fire Brigade's annual

:00:25.:00:33.

Christmas carol concert at St Paul's Cathedral.

:00:34.:00:37.

# This comes to pass when a child is born.

:00:38.:00:49.

And soul singers Gregory Porter and Beverly Knight go

:00:50.:00:51.

Welcome to BBC London News with me, Riz Lateef.

:00:52.:01:05.

We start tonight with a ?20,000 reward being offered

:01:06.:01:09.

by police to help solve the mystery of the disappearance

:01:10.:01:15.

of a 16-year-old boy 30 years ago - who's now believed to

:01:16.:01:18.

It was in March 1986 that Kevin Hicks from Croydon went out

:01:19.:01:22.

to buy some eggs for a school project and was never seen again.

:01:23.:01:25.

The case was reviewed earlier this year and detectives are now

:01:26.:01:28.

appealing for an unnamed woman, who called a local

:01:29.:01:30.

newspaper ten years after he disappeared,

:01:31.:01:31.

His disappearance in 1986 prompted a huge search effort from police and

:01:32.:01:49.

the local community. He has run away, maybe, and we looking, but

:01:50.:01:53.

maybe something more serious has happened. 30 years on, for those

:01:54.:01:58.

still missing him, it is as painful as ever. It doesn't seem like 30

:01:59.:02:03.

years. It only seems like yesterday. He was only going down the road to

:02:04.:02:07.

buy some eggs. He had a pound on him and that was it. The rest is

:02:08.:02:15.

history. Kevin disappeared in March 19 86. In October 1996, the Croydon

:02:16.:02:20.

Advertiser newspaper took an anonymous phone call about his case.

:02:21.:02:26.

Now, following a review, police have announced a murder investigation.

:02:27.:02:28.

When police reviewed the case earlier this year they were

:02:29.:02:32.

concerned by three things. First, the night Kevin disappeared, D had

:02:33.:02:36.

told his parents he was going to a local shop to buy eggs. An hour and

:02:37.:02:40.

a half later, he was senior on Shelley wrote for the last time,

:02:41.:02:43.

leading police to believe he may have been meeting someone. Secondly,

:02:44.:02:48.

he received some speakers from an anonymous person days before his

:02:49.:02:51.

disappearance. Something he tries to hide from his parents. Thirdly,

:02:52.:02:57.

there was the anonymous call to the Croydon Advertiser newspaper ten

:02:58.:02:59.

years after his disappearance, suggesting that that person knew the

:03:00.:03:04.

location his body was buried. Police now believe he had been groomed and

:03:05.:03:09.

perhaps been killed for it. When a disappearance is viewed with a

:03:10.:03:13.

grooming aspect, it raises suspicions that he met with foul

:03:14.:03:18.

play that night. Why wasn't that seem at the time? There was a huge

:03:19.:03:22.

police response of the time, a massive area searched around South

:03:23.:03:28.

Croydon. Now we are being more intelligence led and evidence lead,

:03:29.:03:31.

which is why we are basing the appeal on that now. Investigators

:03:32.:03:38.

believe whoever called the newspaper may know who killed Kevin. I want

:03:39.:03:43.

that person who made the call to contact us. I believe they may have

:03:44.:03:47.

some specific information about what happened to Kevin that night and I

:03:48.:03:50.

urge them to come forward. Make that phone call. You can't tell anyone

:03:51.:03:56.

else because it's your secret, that you know what happened that night.

:03:57.:04:00.

The best person to phone is ring the police. Get that secret told. Just

:04:01.:04:08.

come forward. Let me have closure. That's all I'm asking. I just need

:04:09.:04:12.

closure. Alexandra Hicks ending that

:04:13.:04:13.

report by Dan Freedman. London is still one of the safest

:04:14.:04:16.

cities in the world. That was the Mayor's message today

:04:17.:04:19.

to reassure Londoners and tourists following yesterday's attack

:04:20.:04:22.

on a Christmas market in Berlin. Let's get more from Emilia

:04:23.:04:26.

Papadopoulos who's been This is a very busy time of year all

:04:27.:04:42.

over London with tourists and London is doing their Christmas shopping

:04:43.:04:45.

and visiting markets like the one just behind me here on the South

:04:46.:04:49.

bank. Naturally, people are worried after seeing events in Berlin

:04:50.:04:52.

yesterday, seeing that lorry plough through the cloud killing 12 people

:04:53.:04:58.

and injuring almost 50 people. Earlier today, I spoke with the

:04:59.:05:01.

mayor Sadiq Khan, use that London was standing shoulder to shoulder

:05:02.:05:04.

with Bellerin and he wanted to urge people here to carry on as normal.

:05:05.:05:09.

I want to reassure Londoners and those visiting London

:05:10.:05:11.

that the Met Police service and others are doing

:05:12.:05:14.

The Met Police are currently reviewing safety and security around

:05:15.:05:18.

events like Winter Wonderland, around events like the New Year's

:05:19.:05:20.

Eve fireworks, around markets taking place across London.

:05:21.:05:22.

We are always making sure we're as safe as we possibly can be.

:05:23.:05:25.

But also, it's worth bearing in mind, what the terrorists

:05:26.:05:28.

want to do is to terrorise us - for us to change the way

:05:29.:05:31.

At the same time, we can never be complacent and must

:05:32.:05:36.

As he mentioned there, the Metropolitan Police are reviewing

:05:37.:05:55.

their plans for the festive period just as a precaution, but especially

:05:56.:05:59.

for big events like the New Year's Eve fireworks display. They have

:06:00.:06:02.

confirmed they will be extra security as well as armed officers.

:06:03.:06:05.

The threat level here in London remains the same. It is severe,

:06:06.:06:10.

meaning an attack is highly likely, but the police and the mayor today

:06:11.:06:14.

wanted to reassure people that London was still one of the safest

:06:15.:06:18.

cities in the world and their priority here and now is to keep the

:06:19.:06:20.

people here safe. Thanks very much. As Charlton fans continue to protest

:06:21.:06:22.

against their owner - we speak to the new manager

:06:23.:06:26.

of the south London club The charity Age UK is warning that

:06:27.:06:29.

cuts to councils' budgets mean that fewer elderly people are getting

:06:30.:06:41.

meals on wheels delivered But Hertfordshire is increasing

:06:42.:06:43.

the number of meals it delivers which the county council claims

:06:44.:06:49.

is saving taxpayers money 83-year-old Margaret waits for

:06:50.:06:52.

what she calls her daily lifeline. Margaret has very painful

:06:53.:07:01.

osteoarthritis and bowel problems. A hot, balanced meal delivered

:07:02.:07:08.

to her home in Harpenden in Hertfordshire every day helps

:07:09.:07:18.

the former secretary stay well I don't have to worry working

:07:19.:07:22.

in the kitchen because I can't And, B, someone is checking on me

:07:23.:07:28.

every day to make sure that I'm perfectly all right,

:07:29.:07:32.

which means an awful lot to me because I have no family

:07:33.:07:36.

to check on me at all. How has your appetite been

:07:37.:07:39.

since I last saw you? Regular health checks

:07:40.:07:41.

are included in the service. It's run by Hertfordshire

:07:42.:07:43.

County Council and Hils - Staff have found that more

:07:44.:07:47.

than a third of the people referred to them are at serious

:07:48.:07:51.

risk of malnutrition. In a recent survey of more than 800

:07:52.:07:55.

clients like Margaret, 87% said 76% visit their GPs less

:07:56.:08:00.

and about 93% feel happier Despite budget cuts,

:08:01.:08:07.

Hertfordshire's now providing more of them than anywhere else

:08:08.:08:16.

in the UK. The health checks

:08:17.:08:19.

included are a unique. The health checks

:08:20.:08:22.

included are unique. If the people that we serve meals

:08:23.:08:24.

on wheels to were to go into care, It's estimated we could spend

:08:25.:08:27.

?40 million more per year on residential care if we didn't pay

:08:28.:08:34.

for the meals on wheels service, Elsewhere, meals on wheels have

:08:35.:08:37.

been drastically cut. Some fear it's leading

:08:38.:08:40.

to an increase in malnutrition. In 2014, 67% of councils in the

:08:41.:08:44.

Southeast provided meals on wheels. This year, that's

:08:45.:08:49.

fallen to just 17%. It's estimated that more

:08:50.:08:54.

than 1 million people over 65 in the UK are now suffering

:08:55.:08:56.

malnutrition or are at risk of doing so - that's 10%

:08:57.:09:01.

of the elderly population. I think it's a very,

:09:02.:09:05.

very sad state of affairs for our country because it didn't

:09:06.:09:07.

used to be like this. With the number of over-65s

:09:08.:09:12.

predicted to rise by nearly 50% in the next 20 years,

:09:13.:09:14.

the need to ensure basic nourishment and care will continue to challenge

:09:15.:09:17.

hard-pressed council budgets. Well, joining me now from Age

:09:18.:09:32.

UK is Gordon Deuchars. Thank you for coming in. We saw

:09:33.:09:42.

there an extra health checkup with meals on wheels. What do you make of

:09:43.:09:47.

that? I think that is very positive and it is one of the ways in which

:09:48.:09:52.

meals on wheels are a really valuable way of reaching older

:09:53.:09:56.

people who need some help and making sure that their health is looked

:09:57.:10:05.

after over the piece. Is there any evidence to suggest that's taking

:10:06.:10:08.

away meals on wheels as an impact on the health of the elderly? There is.

:10:09.:10:17.

There is evidence that malnourished people are twice as likely to visit

:10:18.:10:21.

their GP, three times as likely to be admitted to hospital and are

:10:22.:10:26.

likely to stay in hospital longer when they are there. There are

:10:27.:10:34.

obvious knock-on effects of that. In fact, quite a lot of older people

:10:35.:10:39.

who are admitted to hospital have got some signs of malnutrition. You

:10:40.:10:43.

believe it is a false economy, taking away meals on wheels, because

:10:44.:10:49.

in the long term there is in effect a benefit. Absolutely. If people

:10:50.:10:55.

need to use the health service identifiably much more because

:10:56.:11:00.

they've taken away meals on wheels and other similar services, indeed

:11:01.:11:07.

in the long run the NHS will spend more on looking after them. We've

:11:08.:11:12.

talked about it many times on this programme and we know the pressure

:11:13.:11:16.

on budgets of councils. At this time of year, it focuses the mind on the

:11:17.:11:21.

collective responsibility of people in our communities. What do you

:11:22.:11:27.

suggest? I think it is a very good idea to look out for older

:11:28.:11:31.

neighbours and friends that you have, talk to them, check they are

:11:32.:11:38.

all right. Especially around Christmas and when the weather is

:11:39.:11:44.

cold. I don't think it should be, for example, a neighbour's

:11:45.:11:51.

responsibility to check that their older neighbour has enough to eat.

:11:52.:11:54.

There are social responsibilities for that. I would suggest that, if

:11:55.:12:01.

you are worried about an older person, then it is a good idea to

:12:02.:12:08.

get in touch with your local Age UK. Thank you very much indeed for

:12:09.:12:09.

coming in. Essex detectives said today

:12:10.:12:12.

they are continuing to search for the killer of notorious criminal

:12:13.:12:14.

John Goldfinger Palmer. The pledge came as a coroner

:12:15.:12:17.

concluded that the 65-year-old was unlawfully killed

:12:18.:12:20.

at his home last year. He was shot six times

:12:21.:12:22.

at close range. Gareth George was at today's

:12:23.:12:24.

inquest in Chelmsford. John Palmer, AKA Goldfinger. He got

:12:25.:12:35.

the nickname amidst rumours he had melted down gold bullion from the

:12:36.:12:41.

heist in 1983. Speaking to reporters at the time in Tenerife, where he

:12:42.:12:44.

was operating a time-share scam commie denied having anything to do

:12:45.:12:48.

with it. I'm completely innocent of anything to do with this so-called

:12:49.:12:56.

bullion raid. I know nothing of it. In June last year, shortly after

:12:57.:13:00.

these CCTV pictures were taken, Palmer was shot six times at his

:13:01.:13:04.

home near Brentwood in Essex. The days, please didn't realise he had

:13:05.:13:08.

been murdered, thinking he had died as a result of gall bladder surgery

:13:09.:13:11.

has recently undergone. They have recently apologised for that

:13:12.:13:15.

mistake. Today an inquest into his death was held in Chelmsford. The

:13:16.:13:20.

coroner concluded he'd been unlawfully killed. There was only

:13:21.:13:24.

one member of John Palmer's family present at the inquest, and that was

:13:25.:13:28.

a man called Ashley Phil thought. He is the partner of John Palmer's

:13:29.:13:33.

daughter. He is seen on the right, leaving the hearing with DCI Stephen

:13:34.:13:39.

Jennings. DCI Jennings gave evidence and said the murder investigation is

:13:40.:13:43.

ongoing. One problem detectives have is the sheer number of people who

:13:44.:13:47.

might have had a motive to kill Palmer. In relation to his

:13:48.:13:52.

conviction in 2001, there were listed anything up to or above

:13:53.:13:56.

16,000 victims. There could be 16,000 motives for why he was killed

:13:57.:14:01.

in relation to that. Then there is criminality involving the bullion

:14:02.:14:05.

heist. We know a number of people involved and that is, subsequent to

:14:06.:14:08.

the crime, have been either killed or have died. That was very much a

:14:09.:14:13.

consideration. Hatton Gardens, possibly involvement. Possible. It

:14:14.:14:18.

was a line of enquiry we took. He associated the passwords of the

:14:19.:14:22.

people associate with that crime who are now in prison. Police say

:14:23.:14:26.

someone involved in the criminal underworld knows who killed John

:14:27.:14:30.

Palmer and after today's inquest, officers renewed their appeal for

:14:31.:14:32.

anyone with information to come forward.

:14:33.:14:33.

The stars come out for the festive season.

:14:34.:14:38.

I'll be talking to jazz singer songwriter Gregory Porter

:14:39.:14:40.

and Shaun Escoffery as they prepare for a very gospel Christmas

:14:41.:14:43.

This year, the London Fire Brigade has marked its 150th anniversary.

:14:44.:14:59.

It's why the Service's annual Christmas Carol concert

:15:00.:15:01.

at St Paul's Cathedral has added significance - a chance to recognise

:15:02.:15:04.

the bravery of the firefighters who risk their lives everyday

:15:05.:15:06.

where we can also join Asad Ahmad who's there for us.

:15:07.:15:20.

Making yourself at home, I see. The London Fire Brigade, one of the

:15:21.:15:27.

largest in the world, made up of some of the bravest men and women

:15:28.:15:33.

here in London. Why? When there is a fire in a building and everyone is

:15:34.:15:36.

trying to get to safety, it's the firefighters doing the opposite and

:15:37.:15:40.

getting into the building, trying to make the rest of us safer. It would

:15:41.:15:44.

begrudge them coming here to save all's Cathedral for the annual

:15:45.:15:48.

Christmas carol concert? 2000 firefighters from across London eye

:15:49.:15:51.

coming here tonight. They have these fire engines parked outside. You are

:15:52.:15:54.

from east London, born and raised. You have been better what is so

:15:55.:16:01.

special? This is the latest engine we have in London and should be

:16:02.:16:04.

rolled out across the city in the next year. We will be getting out of

:16:05.:16:08.

the way for one of these. Merry Christmas. It is 150 years of the

:16:09.:16:14.

London Fire Brigade, I am joined by Mike, who can tell us about these

:16:15.:16:21.

vintage machines. This is a 1937 Leyland. It served until 1964 at

:16:22.:16:27.

Soho fire station. I must do this. I've always wanted to do that. What

:16:28.:16:32.

a great machine. This would have seen servers around Saint Pauls?

:16:33.:16:37.

Churchill ordered that Saint Pauls be saved at all costs. The London

:16:38.:16:41.

Fire Brigade concentrated resources around here, including this vehicle,

:16:42.:16:49.

in December 19 40. Some don't have engines. This would have been pulled

:16:50.:16:55.

by horses. You'll anachronisms operated by the Metropolitan

:16:56.:16:59.

waterboard, fired by coal and wood. That fired the engine to put out

:17:00.:17:06.

fires. Thank you. Earlier I spoke to Ron Dobson, the outgoing London Fire

:17:07.:17:09.

Brigade commissioner, leaving within a couple of weeks.

:17:10.:17:13.

A 20-year-old from New Cross joining the London Fire Brigade in 1979.

:17:14.:17:16.

Back then, could he have ever envisaged that one day he'd lead

:17:17.:17:18.

the service through a terrorist attack, the Olympic

:17:19.:17:20.

When I first joined, I wanted to be a really good firefighter.

:17:21.:17:35.

Then I wanted to be a really good watch officer in charge

:17:36.:17:38.

of my own watch, then I wanted to run my own station.

:17:39.:17:41.

I didn't actually look at that time in terms of,

:17:42.:17:43.

"I want to run the London Fire Brigade."

:17:44.:17:45.

As the opportunity came along, I more and more realised that

:17:46.:17:48.

I wanted to do that job, and I've been so proud to do it

:17:49.:17:51.

Now, one of the most significant days, let's say,

:17:52.:17:55.

has probably been 7/7, and you were the lead

:17:56.:17:57.

It was an incredible day and I think it's a day that's

:17:58.:18:07.

I'm a different person now to what I was before then.

:18:08.:18:10.

My overriding memory, I think, was how pleased I was that

:18:11.:18:13.

all of our training, all the training we'd done prior

:18:14.:18:15.

to 7/7, for that type of incident - the training the firefighters had

:18:16.:18:18.

done, the training that I'd done, many weekends and things training

:18:19.:18:21.

with the police and the other emergency services and also local

:18:22.:18:24.

authorities to make sure we were ready to respond.

:18:25.:18:26.

You said that that day - understandably - changed you.

:18:27.:18:28.

Just generally, I think I'm more humane and humble

:18:29.:18:32.

about some of the things that I do, really.

:18:33.:18:34.

It changed my outlook on life, really.

:18:35.:18:37.

The most recent attack, yesterday, in Berlin -

:18:38.:18:39.

a lorry killing a number of people at a Christmas market yesterday.

:18:40.:18:42.

Let's hope something like that never happens in London, but if it did,

:18:43.:18:45.

London Fire Brigade - ready for action?

:18:46.:18:47.

That's a very, very difficult event to plan for, the type of attack that

:18:48.:18:52.

But I'm confident that any sort of attack that happened in London,

:18:53.:18:56.

we've got the skills - London firefighters have got

:18:57.:18:58.

I've no doubt that London Fire Brigade is the best Fire

:18:59.:19:02.

We respond more quickly than anybody else, we're open to change,

:19:03.:19:06.

we are much more inclusive workforce - although we need to do

:19:07.:19:09.

more in that area - and I'm very confident that

:19:10.:19:12.

London Fire Brigade will continue to be the best

:19:13.:19:14.

Fire and Rescue Service in the whole world.

:19:15.:19:16.

So, looking into the future now, what does the future hold

:19:17.:19:18.

I'm really pleased that we've appointed the first woman

:19:19.:19:22.

Dany Cotton is going to be my replacement.

:19:23.:19:25.

I think Dany, hopefully, will prove to be a role model

:19:26.:19:27.

for women and people and other groups in our authority to actually

:19:28.:19:30.

So the challenges will continue to change, I'm sure,

:19:31.:19:36.

and what I'd like to see - and I'm sure I will see -

:19:37.:19:39.

is that London Fire Brigade continues to grow and adapt

:19:40.:19:41.

and change to meet the threats that London faces because, actually,

:19:42.:19:44.

London's Fire Commissioner Ron Dobson who retires at the end

:19:45.:19:50.

of this month speaking to Asad Ahmad.

:19:51.:19:54.

It was once viewed by many as the model

:19:55.:19:56.

Several Charlton matches have been disrupted by fans protesting

:19:57.:20:01.

against an unpopular owner under whose watch they were relegated.

:20:02.:20:06.

So a tough challenge for their new manger -

:20:07.:20:08.

the seventh in less than three years.

:20:09.:20:09.

Here's our sports reporter Chris Slegg.

:20:10.:20:14.

One of the many protests aimed at Belgian businessmen

:20:15.:20:16.

Roland Duchatelet, Charlton supporters unhappy with

:20:17.:20:19.

They say they'll keep protesting until he sells up.

:20:20.:20:28.

Stepping into the civil war between fans and owner,

:20:29.:20:31.

new manager Karl Robinson, who recently lost his job at fellow

:20:32.:20:34.

Karl Robinson was MK Dons' manager for six and a half years.

:20:35.:20:40.

Only Arsene Wenger at Arsenal and Paul Tisdale at Exeter have

:20:41.:20:44.

served in their current jobs for longer than that.

:20:45.:20:46.

Here at Charlton, though, these days, the players barely get

:20:47.:20:48.

a chance to know the new man in charge before he's on his way -

:20:49.:20:52.

there's been seven managerial changes in less than three years.

:20:53.:20:56.

Can Karl Robinson fare any better than his predecessors?

:20:57.:20:59.

To an outsider, it looks fairly chaotic.

:21:00.:21:01.

Has it felt like you're walking into a chaotic place?

:21:02.:21:03.

My first reaction has been, it's brilliant, you know?

:21:04.:21:08.

I think certain people here have maybe used the problem

:21:09.:21:11.

to maybe cut corners, rather than focus on themselves.

:21:12.:21:23.

When it comes to the fans, a sizeable section of the fans have

:21:24.:21:26.

been very vocal and very creative, actually, in some of their protests

:21:27.:21:29.

I just hope I can do them proud, I hope I can make them proud.

:21:30.:21:38.

The festive fixture list pits Charlton against Millwall

:21:39.:21:40.

in the south London derby tomorrow and against MK Dons on Boxing Day.

:21:41.:21:47.

The players, though, won't be required to train on Christmas Day.

:21:48.:21:52.

I believe the psychological gain of seeing your kids open Christmas

:21:53.:21:54.

presents far outweighs any physical aspects we can give

:21:55.:21:56.

So my message to them is, if I show you the respect

:21:57.:22:04.

and your family respect, you show your football club respect

:22:05.:22:07.

It may take more than an upturn in results under Karl Robinson

:22:08.:22:14.

for Charlton's owner to regain the respect of many fans.

:22:15.:22:21.

Now, if you fancy something a little bit different to traditional

:22:22.:22:23.

Christmas carols this year - how about joining these two

:22:24.:22:26.

Beverly Knight and American soul singer Gregory Porter

:22:27.:22:29.

are hosting their very own festive fun in Hackney.

:22:30.:22:34.

Our entertainment correspondent Brenda Emmanus caught up

:22:35.:22:36.

# I really am sorry, but it just couldn't wait.

:22:37.:22:45.

The Grammy award-winning singer songwriter Gregory Porter,

:22:46.:22:48.

whose musical roots are steeped in jazz and gospel music.

:22:49.:22:52.

A London regular, the man with the booming baritone has teamed

:22:53.:22:55.

up with a host of talent to record a special gospel show for Christmas.

:22:56.:22:59.

How much has music always been a part of your Christmas experience?

:23:00.:23:10.

My mother, she'd put on Nat King Cole and Mahalia Jackson.

:23:11.:23:17.

They would be spinning on the record player.

:23:18.:23:19.

At the point at which you're opening your gifts or first coming

:23:20.:23:25.

into the room and you see the tree, it's - in a way, it's the backdrop.

:23:26.:23:32.

Together with singer and musical star Beverley Knight,

:23:33.:23:41.

Gregory introduces a feast of festive music from the cream

:23:42.:23:45.

This has already turned into a musical family,

:23:46.:23:53.

I don't think this will be the last time that I work with so many people

:23:54.:24:05.

that I've met during the course of putting the show together.

:24:06.:24:07.

The Lion King star Shaun Escoffery performs his hero Donny Hathaway's

:24:08.:24:13.

How I look at gospel music - it's expressing the un-expressible.

:24:14.:24:21.

It also allows you to let yourself go.

:24:22.:24:25.

It allows you to celebrate, it allows you to kind

:24:26.:24:29.

I'm going to let myself go and sing and there's no-one that's

:24:30.:24:33.

That's where the beauty of it comes, really.

:24:34.:24:39.

This show, recorded at the Church of Saint John-at-Hackney,

:24:40.:24:49.

promises to be an uplifting experience with popular songs

:24:50.:24:52.

I think we've done a really good job to matching the artists with songs

:24:53.:24:59.

that they will really get stuck into and really give

:25:00.:25:02.

Well, you can join in this big spiritual singalong on Christmas Day

:25:03.:25:09.

Let's get a check on the weather now with Wendy Hurrell.

:25:10.:25:26.

You just need to walk out of a concert like that into some crisp

:25:27.:25:33.

snow. Don't think you'll get it. It would be quite different. It will be

:25:34.:25:37.

windy. In the meantime, we are going to flip between a mild, great

:25:38.:25:40.

weather and the crisp sunny weather. It was the turn of sunny weather

:25:41.:25:45.

today. Wherever you wear across London and the home counties, it was

:25:46.:25:48.

a really lovely day. Beautifully captured by our Weather Watchers as

:25:49.:25:52.

usual. The sunshine and blue sky will return on Thursday, but before

:25:53.:25:57.

we get there, we have something a bit different. Outside at the moment

:25:58.:26:01.

it is clear and the temperature is falling. Three to 5 degrees at the

:26:02.:26:05.

moment and as we go through the night, it stars to cloud over. You

:26:06.:26:09.

can see what that does to the temperature, they are starting to go

:26:10.:26:12.

up. You can also see we have bits and pieces of rain around and that

:26:13.:26:15.

will take us through the rush hour tomorrow morning. Then, we will get

:26:16.:26:22.

some heavier rain later. It is the light stuff first. You will notice

:26:23.:26:26.

the wind picking up. The blustery morning, a blustery day. The best

:26:27.:26:30.

chance of any brightness will be in the middle, around lunchtime. This

:26:31.:26:33.

is what you will go home in during the evening rush hour. Not nice. It

:26:34.:26:39.

will be blustery. Ten or 11 degrees make it looked mild, but under that

:26:40.:26:42.

persistent and heavy rain, it will feel quite unpleasant. There is your

:26:43.:26:47.

blue sky for Thursday once again. Another crisp day. As we approach

:26:48.:26:51.

the Christmas weekend, it gets interesting. We lose the

:26:52.:26:54.

high-pressure which brought the sunshine on Thursday and instead we

:26:55.:26:58.

have low pressure. Storm Barbara is coming through on Friday into

:26:59.:27:03.

Christmas Eve. That will create some windy conditions that will continue

:27:04.:27:07.

through to Christmas Day. All sorts of things happening this week, but

:27:08.:27:10.

the key thing to note is the strength the winds later and into

:27:11.:27:14.

the weekend. We will keep you posted.

:27:15.:27:15.

The only suspect held after yesterday's deadly lorry

:27:16.:27:23.

attack on a Berlin Christmas market has been released.

:27:24.:27:25.

Here in the capital, Mayor Sadiq Khan has reassured

:27:26.:27:27.

Londoners and tourists that the capital is still safe.

:27:28.:27:30.

I'll be back later during the ten o'clock, plenty more though

:27:31.:27:33.

From all of us here - thanks for watching
