We're live at one of the country's biggest shopping centres | :00:00. | :00:07.
as the countdown to Christmas nears an end. | :00:08. | :00:09.
Today may be billed Frenzied Friday and tomorrow Super Saturday, | :00:10. | :00:13.
but will consumers spend as retailers hope? | :00:14. | :00:15.
Why it could be a tough year ahead... | :00:16. | :00:19.
Wider things like the European referendum, they do take time | :00:20. | :00:21.
to filter through and it will have a sort of longer-term | :00:22. | :00:24.
impact on the way people feel about their confidence | :00:25. | :00:26.
Also ahead on the programme tonight... | :00:27. | :00:31.
Manned checkpoints and barricades - a new ring of steel is planned | :00:32. | :00:34.
But why snow globes and Christmas crackers are catching | :00:35. | :00:41.
I'm backstage at the Hackney Empire at Sleeping Beauty, | :00:42. | :00:46.
Good evening and welcome to the programme. We are live from | :00:47. | :01:10.
Westfield shopping centre, just one of them in London that is filled | :01:11. | :01:14.
with people picking up last-minute Christmas gifts. Others are getting | :01:15. | :01:18.
into the festive spirit in other ways on the ice rink below us. There | :01:19. | :01:24.
has been much talk this year about what would happen post-referendum. | :01:25. | :01:28.
Well, figures out today suggest that actually spending has held up, but | :01:29. | :01:33.
will it continue? Mark Ashdown has been chatting to shoppers about | :01:34. | :01:36.
whether their spending habits have changed at all and are looking to | :01:37. | :01:42.
the lengths that retailers are going to to attract them. | :01:43. | :01:48.
Well, relax, you're in the Merman Lagoon now. | :01:49. | :01:50.
Westfield's latest attraction isn't a store at all, | :01:51. | :01:54.
but an underwater experience complete with boat ride | :01:55. | :01:56.
Today's ONS figures show consumers are still willing to spend, | :01:57. | :02:01.
but shops like this recently opened branch of Charlotte Tilbury | :02:02. | :02:04.
are coming up with creative ways to woo business. | :02:05. | :02:07.
People definitely want to experience things whilst shopping rather | :02:08. | :02:15.
than just transacting, and I think that's where we win | :02:16. | :02:18.
big-time because you come in here and there's so much to do | :02:19. | :02:21.
These destination shopping malls are increasingly attracting people | :02:22. | :02:26.
from their own high streets and further afield... | :02:27. | :02:31.
Some last-minute Christmas presents, we've travelled from Qatar. | :02:32. | :02:36.
Big luxury brands, you wouldn't find on a typical high street, | :02:37. | :02:46.
This wall here takes customers through the journey | :02:47. | :02:52.
So, for example, you have different levels of stitching and quilting. | :02:53. | :02:59.
There's no robots at the Bentley factory, 4,000 people work there. | :03:00. | :03:03.
People sort of like all this, they like to come... | :03:04. | :03:06.
It's not just shopping, it's coming and learning something. | :03:07. | :03:09.
We want people to go away learning maybe an anecdote or something | :03:10. | :03:15.
And, of course, they want you to buy something. | :03:16. | :03:19.
That might just be a key ring or a toy car... | :03:20. | :03:21.
But if you do have a few hundred thousand pounds left | :03:22. | :03:24.
after your spending spree, you could come downstairs here. | :03:25. | :03:27.
This showroom is right underneath Westfield. | :03:28. | :03:30.
You can take one of these for a test drive and still have it | :03:31. | :03:34.
Back in the real world, this data shows the economy | :03:35. | :03:37.
is more reliant than ever on consumer confidence. | :03:38. | :03:40.
I've really cut down this year, absolutely. | :03:41. | :03:43.
Because of the referendum, things like that? | :03:44. | :03:45.
It's just generally you realise your money is not | :03:46. | :03:50.
It's really the household budget that affects how people make | :03:51. | :03:55.
So things like interest rates, if you're paying a little bit more | :03:56. | :04:01.
or less on your mortgage, it'll change how much you have | :04:02. | :04:03.
in your monthly budget to spend and whether or not you've got to do | :04:04. | :04:07.
more for your hours at work because of the state of the economy | :04:08. | :04:10.
and actually wider things like the European referendum, | :04:11. | :04:12.
they do take time to filter through and they'll | :04:13. | :04:14.
have a longer-term impact on the way people feel about their confidence | :04:15. | :04:17.
The pain has been felt more in high streets. | :04:18. | :04:22.
More pound shops, not very nice shops. | :04:23. | :04:24.
I think people don't really try very hard. | :04:25. | :04:26.
Everything is closed there, the shops are shut down. | :04:27. | :04:32.
It seems places on the outskirts of London, like Harrow, | :04:33. | :04:36.
are struggling in the shadow of out-of-town malls. | :04:37. | :04:40.
If you were doing your Christmas shopping, where would you go? | :04:41. | :04:42.
Obviously the internet generally tends to be | :04:43. | :04:48.
cheaper because they do not have the overheads that the high | :04:49. | :04:51.
But there are signs - this family business only | :04:52. | :04:54.
I want them to support the independent retailers | :04:55. | :04:58.
and hopefully we can give them special service as well. | :04:59. | :05:05.
If this has been an up-and-down year, 2017 promises | :05:06. | :05:07.
Well, let us speak to Rachel from the British Retail Consortium and | :05:08. | :05:24.
her colleagues. Thank you for joining us. Please give us a sense | :05:25. | :05:30.
of keep calm and spending after the referendum, that is what the figures | :05:31. | :05:34.
seem to tell us. That is true, it has not been a spectacular year for | :05:35. | :05:39.
retail but the sales figures in the three months post-referendum were | :05:40. | :05:43.
pretty solid. If consumer spending was the key driver of growth after | :05:44. | :05:47.
the referendum, that must raise questions about what are not and how | :05:48. | :05:53.
long that can continue? Yes, it does raise questions and what we will see | :05:54. | :05:57.
over this Christmas, I think, is that it will be challenging to have | :05:58. | :06:01.
more growth than last year. Most consumers have said they were | :06:02. | :06:04.
watched their Budget this year and that will have an overall effect on | :06:05. | :06:10.
sales. Figures have suggested that people are spending significantly | :06:11. | :06:19.
less this Christmas. These sorts of marketing term spike frenzied Friday | :06:20. | :06:24.
and Super Saturday, are the ways of retailers trying to entice shoppers? | :06:25. | :06:29.
I do not think so, we have seen a huge number of visitors, over 30 | :06:30. | :06:34.
million since the beginning of the Christmas season at Westfield | :06:35. | :06:37.
shopping centre. Spending half ?1 million an hour. The Speaker alone. | :06:38. | :06:42.
So it has been a pretty busy Christmas period for us. If it is a | :06:43. | :06:48.
more challenging Christmas, Rachel, as you mentioned, how is the | :06:49. | :06:52.
landscape looking for 2017 for retailers and consumers? 2017 looks | :06:53. | :06:57.
really challenging and that is mainly because prices are going to | :06:58. | :07:01.
go up. So far we have seen shop price deflation for over three years | :07:02. | :07:05.
now but because of the devaluation of the pound, prices will go up | :07:06. | :07:09.
mixture and that will squeeze the of consumers. While the devaluation of | :07:10. | :07:14.
the pound and the spending of tourists, as that enjoyed the | :07:15. | :07:17.
capital and there could be a shock coming to us? It has not just | :07:18. | :07:21.
enjoyed in the capital, the rest of the UK has been translated from the | :07:22. | :07:24.
price rises because retailers are still selling stock that they bought | :07:25. | :07:28.
before the referendum. I think London gets an advantage from having | :07:29. | :07:32.
all those tourists coming over and we have seen tourists spend grow | :07:33. | :07:36.
massively since the referendum. Both of you, thank you very much for | :07:37. | :07:41.
joining us this evening and Avery, Merry Christmas to both of you. | :07:42. | :07:43.
Thank you very much indeed. We will have more from Westfield shopping | :07:44. | :07:51.
centre bit of this evening, including a modern-day ankle and | :07:52. | :07:55.
some festive voices. So do stay tuned. Now over the Alex Bushill who | :07:56. | :07:59.
has the rest of the day 's news. Alex. | :08:00. | :08:05.
A ?5 million "ring of steel" is being planned to protect some | :08:06. | :08:09.
of the Square Mile's highest skyscrapers from terrorist attack. | :08:10. | :08:11.
Manned checkpoints, rising street bollards and crash-proof barricades | :08:12. | :08:13.
are among the measures proposed according to a Corporation of London | :08:14. | :08:15.
Nice in July, Ilori attack kills over 90 people. On Monday in Berlin, | :08:16. | :08:31.
12 people died at a Christmas market. The challenge in London is | :08:32. | :08:35.
how to keep the capital functional whilst protecting us against larger | :08:36. | :08:42.
vehicle borne attacks. We have seen the attacks like in Berlin, Ilori | :08:43. | :08:47.
that was simply hijacked and driven into a busy area. We cannot discount | :08:48. | :08:51.
these types of attacks but one that we would call a vehicle borne on | :08:52. | :08:57.
cause of device or a large truck that is packed full of explosives | :08:58. | :09:00.
being driven into a building. This is why it is especially important | :09:01. | :09:04.
that security has the address not only the high-level protection | :09:05. | :09:08.
measures but the ground level of any type or form that an attack might | :09:09. | :09:16.
take shape as. A new report shows that MI5 and counterterror police | :09:17. | :09:19.
have advised that the city skyscrapers should be better | :09:20. | :09:29.
protected. In the report has said... When security plans were first drawn | :09:30. | :09:34.
up in 2007, they focused on protecting individual buildings but | :09:35. | :09:38.
as more skyscrapers are built and planned in this area, it was felt | :09:39. | :09:41.
the only way to protect them all was to create a so-called ring of steel | :09:42. | :09:45.
surrounding this whole area of London at an estimated cost of ?5 | :09:46. | :09:50.
million. Bordering Liverpool Street, the bank of England and down the | :09:51. | :09:53.
Fenchurch Street, the ring is designed to protect the east of the | :09:54. | :09:59.
city, home to some of the most iconic as newest skyscrapers of the | :10:00. | :10:04.
capital. This eastern section of the City of London is of special | :10:05. | :10:08.
importance because there will be a number of media landmarks built and | :10:09. | :10:10.
developed around this area that could be of interest and set the | :10:11. | :10:18.
ideology of terrorists. This will include manned checkpoints and | :10:19. | :10:23.
bollards. The ring of steel was response to IRA bombs in the early | :10:24. | :10:30.
90s. So are the protective measures familial -- so while these | :10:31. | :10:34.
protective measures are familiar, it is hopefully that these scenes will | :10:35. | :10:36.
not come again. A specialist police team created | :10:37. | :10:40.
to tackle online extremism is on course to remove its 250,000 | :10:41. | :10:42.
item of harmful material The Counter Terrorism | :10:43. | :10:45.
Internet Referral Unit, based within Scotland Yard, | :10:46. | :10:47.
was set up in 2012. Let's get more from Emma North, | :10:48. | :10:50.
who joins me now... And this is a new team, | :10:51. | :10:52.
with a complex and difficult task... That is correct. They are the only | :10:53. | :11:00.
team in the world to do this kind of job, operated by the Met. This year, | :11:01. | :11:06.
officers removed more than 120,000 PCs of extremist material from the | :11:07. | :11:10.
Internet, more than double what they did last year and we are talking | :11:11. | :11:15.
about nasty stuff they are taking down. Jihadists videos including | :11:16. | :11:18.
beheadings and so-called hearts and minds films aimed at families, | :11:19. | :11:23.
getting them to encourage their sons or daughters to fight in the lights | :11:24. | :11:26.
of Syria. We have heard a lot about the rise of the so-called lone wolf | :11:27. | :11:30.
fight this year. They get a lot of their training material from the | :11:31. | :11:34.
Internet. Chief Superintendent Clarke Javid from the Met, he reads | :11:35. | :11:39.
this team, he has said we cannot underestimate how influential these | :11:40. | :11:45.
videos can be. We see them trying to influence others to commit acts in | :11:46. | :11:49.
their name, we are seeing material broadcast from Islamic State | :11:50. | :11:52.
encouraging others to tell, explaining how they should make | :11:53. | :11:56.
exporters. We think it is important to remove that material where we can | :11:57. | :11:59.
add to stop vulnerable people finding it so easily on social media | :12:00. | :12:06.
sites. There has been calls for more international help. Absolutely, this | :12:07. | :12:09.
is because we are seeing more videos of different sorts appearing on the | :12:10. | :12:14.
internets, more far-right material is appearing, which the Counter | :12:15. | :12:16.
Terrorism Internet Referral Unit must take down as well. We are | :12:17. | :12:20.
talking about speeches that are found at meetings, demonstrations | :12:21. | :12:25.
and films that are getting more and more sophisticated. This is begging | :12:26. | :12:28.
the question, is this actually a job for the police? Should it not be the | :12:29. | :12:31.
job of companies that run these Internet services to take these | :12:32. | :12:36.
thumbs down? The police have said in the main these companies are very | :12:37. | :12:39.
good to deal with, they do cooperate but there are some that are unloving | :12:40. | :12:43.
and this is why they need delights of Interpol and Europol to join | :12:44. | :12:46.
forces but this team to make everybody pull their weight. Thank | :12:47. | :12:51.
you for that. Chelsea have been cleared | :12:52. | :12:57.
of breaking any Premier League rules in their handling of claims | :12:58. | :12:59.
of historical sexual Gary Johnson accepted a ?50,000 | :13:00. | :13:01.
payment from Chelsea last year and signed a confidentiality | :13:02. | :13:04.
agreement after claiming he was sexually assaulted | :13:05. | :13:06.
by the club's chief scout The Premier League says Chelsea | :13:07. | :13:08.
has no case to answer, but has asked that the club agrees | :13:09. | :13:12.
to a full safeguarding audit Harrods is to give more customer | :13:13. | :13:15.
tips direct to its restaurant staff after waiters and chefs threatened | :13:16. | :13:23.
an unofficial strike. The Knightsbridge department store | :13:24. | :13:24.
says it's reviewing the way it shares out service charges, | :13:25. | :13:27.
after its union said workers could walk out | :13:28. | :13:29.
during the post-Christmas sales. The store said it had not been made | :13:30. | :13:31.
aware of any industrial action. Well, more now on the Christmas | :13:32. | :13:38.
getaway and a busy day But also a busy time | :13:39. | :13:41.
at London's airports. Almost a 120,000 passengers | :13:42. | :13:44.
are expected to fly out of Heathrow today, making it the most popular | :13:45. | :13:47.
day for flights in the lead-up And at Stansted they're | :13:48. | :13:51.
expecting their busiest ever Christmas, as Leigh Milner has | :13:52. | :13:56.
been finding out. Today more than 40,000 passengers | :13:57. | :14:02.
will walk through these gates, making it the busiest departure | :14:03. | :14:04.
day before Christmas. But if you think that's busy, | :14:05. | :14:06.
double the amount of passengers will be flying in and out of this | :14:07. | :14:10.
airport in just one week's time. And with both Christmas and New Year | :14:11. | :14:16.
landing on a weekend, it seems holiday-makers are making | :14:17. | :14:19.
the most of it. We're going for Christmas | :14:20. | :14:23.
and New Year, my grandma You were born there, | :14:24. | :14:29.
so we are going back What are you doing in an airport | :14:30. | :14:33.
the day before Christmas Eve? Because we want to be leave it | :14:34. | :14:37.
all behind and go off and go skiing, But we're just going to make | :14:38. | :14:41.
the most of it, anyway. We used to live abroad | :14:42. | :14:45.
and we like the warmth. Spanish people too, so we just | :14:46. | :14:47.
thought we would go back No family there, just thought | :14:48. | :14:50.
you would spend it together? Now, if you are running a bit | :14:51. | :14:54.
late for your flight, bear in mind it will take | :14:55. | :15:01.
approximately eight minutes to get through security, | :15:02. | :15:06.
but if you don't follow the rules, it could take you up | :15:07. | :15:09.
to five times as long and at this time of the year, | :15:10. | :15:11.
you've got extra Snow globes is a huge one, | :15:12. | :15:13.
that is a liquid and, again, And also party crackers because they | :15:14. | :15:17.
contain small detonators. So, of course, we see | :15:18. | :15:21.
different things coming through at Christmas, | :15:22. | :15:24.
but again, just the same as any day of the year, | :15:25. | :15:26.
we just want people to get through. It might have been ten years | :15:27. | :15:29.
since the new rules were introduced, but it seems a few of you still need | :15:30. | :15:32.
a little reminder. Now, remember, pop your make-up | :15:33. | :15:35.
in a little plastic bag and if it is over | :15:36. | :15:40.
100 mil, bin it. Leigh Milner, BBC London News, | :15:41. | :15:42.
at Stansted Airport. For sports fans, Boxing Day | :15:43. | :15:47.
wouldn't be Boxing Day One of the most prestigious events | :15:48. | :15:49.
in horse racing will be taking place at Kempton Park, | :15:50. | :15:57.
where a huge crowd is expected. The race before the race | :15:58. | :16:00.
as the Kempton Park ticket office gets ready for the arrival of 20,000 | :16:01. | :16:07.
people for Boxing Day's The atmosphere is amazing, | :16:08. | :16:10.
the roar from the crowd on the big race is unreal and the mood | :16:11. | :16:14.
in the office is brilliant. We all joke with each | :16:15. | :16:16.
other and we have a nice lunch on Christmas Eve, | :16:17. | :16:19.
so it is all good. We have a great team | :16:20. | :16:21.
here and the planning So, everything is as it should be, | :16:22. | :16:25.
a finely-tuned machine now. The legendary Kauto Star won this | :16:26. | :16:30.
race a record five times and is the only horse to claim | :16:31. | :16:33.
the Jockey Club Chase Triple Crown with triumphs at Haydock, | :16:34. | :16:38.
Kempton Park But he could have a rival | :16:39. | :16:39.
for that latter achievement. Cue Card won the King George last | :16:40. | :16:45.
year and this season has already completed the first leg | :16:46. | :16:48.
of the Triple Crown Stablemate Thistlecrack will be | :16:49. | :16:50.
among the challengers on Boxing Day, He has got all the attributes, | :16:51. | :16:55.
plenty of pace, he has won over two miles, he has won over two | :16:56. | :17:03.
and a half miles and three miles, I think he was a horse | :17:04. | :17:06.
that was quite difficult to handle So now I think he is a boy | :17:07. | :17:11.
that has become a man. The fine line between triumph | :17:12. | :17:16.
and tragedy in racing was clear for all to see at Kempton in October | :17:17. | :17:20.
when an accident left jockey Freddy Tylicki paralysed | :17:21. | :17:23.
from the waist down. He was released from hospital this | :17:24. | :17:26.
week and transferred to the London Spinal Cord Unit | :17:27. | :17:28.
where his recovery will continue. It is great to hear that he has been | :17:29. | :17:34.
moved out of hospital All of our thoughts | :17:35. | :17:37.
are with Freddy over this really Boxing Day's most famous trophy has | :17:38. | :17:40.
a new look to it this year. For someone, it will make | :17:41. | :17:44.
the perfect late Christmas present. Well, that's all from me for now, | :17:45. | :17:47.
but we can rejoin Riz Thank you very much, Alex. Yes, I | :17:48. | :18:07.
have come outside, I have my coat and my scarf on. It is feeling very | :18:08. | :18:12.
festive. We have a special breed in case you did not see earlier in the | :18:13. | :18:16.
programme, for you later. Stay tuned. Firstly, Christmas would not | :18:17. | :18:20.
be Christmas without pantomimes. Wendy has been speaking to the woman | :18:21. | :18:25.
behind some of the capital's most successful ones and she has said | :18:26. | :18:28.
this year she has turned pantomime on its head. | :18:29. | :18:34.
Christmas at the Hackney Empire means panto and for the last 18 | :18:35. | :18:37.
years, they have been written and directed by the same woman. | :18:38. | :18:40.
This year, she's taken on Sleeping Beauty, but her princess | :18:41. | :18:42.
doesn't need to be rescued by a prince, thank you very much. | :18:43. | :18:45.
It was really important to me that she was going to be someone | :18:46. | :18:56.
who really kicks butt, actually, and was a warrior. | :18:57. | :19:08.
I like the idea of a woman being a warrior and I thought, | :19:09. | :19:11.
yes, this is important, let's turn it on its head and let's | :19:12. | :19:14.
But they haven't strayed too far from panto tradition. | :19:15. | :19:18.
The audience still gets to shout those most loved lines like... | :19:19. | :19:20.
And you won't find soap or reality TV stars here - | :19:21. | :19:24.
You go from Olivier Awards to being booed every day. | :19:25. | :19:28.
If they are not booing, I'm not doing my job right. | :19:29. | :19:31.
Backstage, Gavin Spokes gets his dame face on. | :19:32. | :19:44.
And lets me into the secrets of the role in which he | :19:45. | :19:50.
There was a famous dame called Jack Tripp and he said | :19:51. | :19:55.
you only need to do this, that, and that, and that's | :19:56. | :19:58.
all you need to do, apparently, and repeat and repeat | :19:59. | :20:00.
The audience is the final person to bring the production alive. | :20:01. | :20:05.
That's what makes it a bit more special, I suppose. | :20:06. | :20:08.
Oh, no, it isn't - Christmas without a panto. | :20:09. | :20:18.
From Hackney to Harrow, Richmond to Romford and everywhere | :20:19. | :20:20.
in between, this century's long staple is still making us smile - | :20:21. | :20:23.
which is what we need at the end of this year. | :20:24. | :20:25.
If you prefer to stay indoors, let me tell you about one of the real TV | :20:26. | :20:38.
highlights of this festive season, it is the feature length animation | :20:39. | :20:43.
by the graphic novelist and the creator of the Snowman, Raymond | :20:44. | :20:48.
Briggs. What can we expect? Key moments in 20th-century London and | :20:49. | :20:52.
the voices of Brenda Blethyn and Jim Broadbent. Am I to understand that | :20:53. | :21:02.
you wish to get married to a man? Yes, madam. It tells the story of | :21:03. | :21:08.
two ordinary Londoners, their lives, love... And 40 years of change | :21:09. | :21:17.
across the capital. Ethel and earnest recounts the lives of the | :21:18. | :21:23.
parents of Raymond Briggs. It was a story written on this very S. London | :21:24. | :21:29.
St after marrying in 1930, Ethel and earnest moved here to Wimbledon, | :21:30. | :21:34.
where they lived happily for the rest of their married life. | :21:35. | :21:37.
Originally a graphic novel, it has been brought to the screen by | :21:38. | :21:42.
director Roger Meanwood, one of the original animators of the Snowman | :21:43. | :21:47.
back in 1982. With the modern technology, we no longer have the | :21:48. | :21:52.
light box but a tablet that we draw upon. Yet, bringing 20th-century | :21:53. | :21:57.
London to buy the animation was no small feat. For the animation | :21:58. | :22:02.
process itself, we had over 100 people, that includes the animators, | :22:03. | :22:08.
their assistants and also the clean-up people who added the final | :22:09. | :22:12.
lines to the drawings. So the end credits go on for a long time. Jim | :22:13. | :22:16.
Broadbent and Brenda Blethyn star in the film and taking part was almost | :22:17. | :22:23.
a case of art imitating life. It is so reminiscent of my own parents | :22:24. | :22:30.
life. In so many ways. It even looks like my own mother. When those | :22:31. | :22:35.
voices came over, I just felt my mother was any written. I spent the | :22:36. | :22:42.
whole two days of recording in tears. It was a love story that | :22:43. | :22:47.
lasted over 40 years, that included war, child rearing and the onset of | :22:48. | :22:51.
old age. For those wanting to tune into this very London deal, Ethel | :22:52. | :23:00.
and earnest errors on BBC One, 730 on the 24th of December. | :23:01. | :23:08.
I mentioned we had a treat earlier. Meet some of the members of the | :23:09. | :23:11.
London community Gospel choir who have sung with the lights of Kylie | :23:12. | :23:15.
Minogue, Madonna and Sir Paul McCartney. How much do you love this | :23:16. | :23:18.
time of year? We love it, especially the food. What will you be singing | :23:19. | :23:26.
for us this evening? This evening we will be singing joy to the world. | :23:27. | :23:30.
Thank you. Whilst you get prepared and get into position, we will, of | :23:31. | :23:34.
course, get that all-important weather forecast. It is starting to | :23:35. | :23:38.
drizzle here. John Hammond has the forecast. | :23:39. | :23:45.
If you are dreaming of a white Christmas, dream on. It will not | :23:46. | :23:50.
happen. Lovely picture from one of our Weather Watchers. The rain is on | :23:51. | :23:56.
its way. That is arriving in the capital, just about now. I mentioned | :23:57. | :24:03.
band of rain, but the odd heavy burst, that will rush through and | :24:04. | :24:06.
the skies will clear, no real dramas for the rest of the night. It will | :24:07. | :24:11.
be largely clear. Temperatures will not fall too low but it will be to | :24:12. | :24:15.
the first thing tomorrow morning. Temperatures in rural spots are | :24:16. | :24:18.
closed everything so you might have to scrape the windscreen. If you are | :24:19. | :24:21.
heading out for last-minute Christmas shopping there will be | :24:22. | :24:25.
blue skies and it will be bright and breezy. It should stay dry | :24:26. | :24:30.
throughout the day, showers will only be isolated. No problems if you | :24:31. | :24:35.
are on the move across this half the country. Furthermore, a different | :24:36. | :24:41.
story. Nine or 10 degrees should cover it. As we head into the | :24:42. | :24:46.
evening, tomorrow evening, it will be largely dry for a time. | :24:47. | :24:51.
Thickening cloud coming in from the West but the rain will hold off | :24:52. | :24:54.
until Christmas Day, just the odd spot of drizzle. Here is the big | :24:55. | :24:58.
picture for Christmas Day. That big area of low pressure to the North | :24:59. | :25:03.
West, that is Storm corner. Wrapped within that system, a lot of warm | :25:04. | :25:07.
here and that will be the noteworthy thing about Christmas Day, it will | :25:08. | :25:11.
be remarkably mild for the time of year. Not quite tee shot Weatherup | :25:12. | :25:16.
but nearly. On Christmas Day we could have some sunshine and in 12 | :25:17. | :25:20.
places we could get up to the mid-teens. Fair bit of cloud and | :25:21. | :25:25.
later in the day we could see a splash more. 14, possibly 15 degrees | :25:26. | :25:31.
and through Monday, bank holiday, it will be dry. The sun coming out and | :25:32. | :25:36.
that unsettled prospect class. Next week, we have the return of | :25:37. | :25:40.
overnight frost and fog. Back to Riz Lateef. | :25:41. | :25:50.
We are going to be tube the festive sound of the Gospel community choir | :25:51. | :25:55.
singing Joy to the world. I would like to thank you for your company. | :25:56. | :26:01.
It has been quite a year. From all the BBC London team, we wish you a | :26:02. | :26:04.
Merry and peaceful Christmas. Good night. | :26:05. | :26:17.
# He rules the world with truth and grace | :26:18. | :27:07.
Christmas is about family. I'll have that. | :27:08. | :28:06.
Let's get this Christmas party started! | :28:07. | :28:24. |
