Good evening and welcome to BBC London News. | :00:13. | :00:14.
Southern Rail passengers have been warned that services will be | :00:15. | :00:18.
"severely disrupted" over the next few days because of a fresh strike | :00:19. | :00:21.
by guards and an ongoing overtime ban by drivers. | :00:22. | :00:24.
Members of the RMT union will walk out on New Year's | :00:25. | :00:27.
Our political Correspondent Karl Mercer reports. | :00:28. | :00:33.
Not strike one, not strike two, not even strike three, | :00:34. | :00:36.
For months, customers on Southern trains have suffered. | :00:37. | :00:42.
Even on days when there haven't been strikes, | :00:43. | :00:44.
Now, they face going into the New Year with more of the same. | :00:45. | :00:51.
Over the next three days, the RMT union will be on strike. | :00:52. | :00:54.
A week later, they'll be joined by drivers from the Aslef union | :00:55. | :00:57.
in the long-running row over changes that would see drivers | :00:58. | :01:01.
being responsible for shutting the train doors instead of guards. | :01:02. | :01:04.
I'm not looking to take any credit or to get a victory. | :01:05. | :01:07.
To help the travelling public maintain a safe and secure railway | :01:08. | :01:15.
and provide the train company with the benefits of enhanced | :01:16. | :01:18.
On the eve of the New Year, I make this challenge to them. | :01:19. | :01:24.
Let's forget about the dogma, and let's do this for the public. | :01:25. | :01:30.
The company insists it will continue with its plans | :01:31. | :01:32.
It, too, says it's willing to talk but once again, | :01:33. | :01:39.
It has been a very frustrating number of months and I would | :01:40. | :01:47.
like to apologise for the service we've been offering, | :01:48. | :01:49.
which of course has not been anything like good enough. | :01:50. | :01:52.
We've continued with our plans, we are continuing to roll | :01:53. | :01:54.
out our plans and we intend to do that. | :01:55. | :01:56.
We feel our plans are very reasonable, they're all | :01:57. | :01:58.
about a better service for our customer and are about | :01:59. | :02:01.
improved punctuality and more opportunity for our people to work | :02:02. | :02:03.
We think it's entirely a good thing we're doing. | :02:04. | :02:06.
We think the response of the trade unions have been unreasonable | :02:07. | :02:09.
The company is warning it will only run around half of services over | :02:10. | :02:13.
The following week, it won't run any if the driver strike goes ahead. | :02:14. | :02:17.
A new year perhaps, but the same old problems on Southern. | :02:18. | :02:20.
We'd like to hear from you if you've been affected | :02:21. | :02:24.
We're hosting a special televised debate on Sunday 8th January. | :02:25. | :02:30.
If you'd like to take part, email your details, | :02:31. | :02:32.
including your point of view, to bbc rail [email protected]. | :02:33. | :02:36.
A teenager has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder | :02:37. | :02:39.
after another boy was knocked off his bike before being stabbed | :02:40. | :02:41.
The attack happened on Rushcroft Road around | :02:42. | :02:46.
It's thought the 18-year-old victim was attacked by a gang of men | :02:47. | :02:51.
who got out of a Ford Focus car after it struck him. | :02:52. | :02:54.
He remains in a critical condition in hospital. | :02:55. | :02:58.
Christmas may be over, but Londoners are being urged | :02:59. | :03:00.
The capital currently only recycles around 30% of its rubbish, | :03:01. | :03:04.
After the festivities, the clean-up begins across London. | :03:05. | :03:17.
Many councils will collect overflowing rubbish for | :03:18. | :03:18.
But with a less than sparkling record on | :03:19. | :03:26.
recycling, households in the capital are being asked to make it a New | :03:27. | :03:29.
It's vital that we up the amount of recycling that we do. | :03:30. | :03:36.
We are below the national average in London, 31%, | :03:37. | :03:38.
In order to look after our planet, basically. | :03:39. | :03:48.
The borough of Surrey Heath recycles more than double the average amount | :03:49. | :03:51.
And with so much more waste created during the holidays, | :03:52. | :04:00.
it's a chance to reduce the load on Southeast landfill sites. | :04:01. | :04:04.
In London, over the Christmas period, we create | :04:05. | :04:06.
enough waste to fill Trafalgar Square several times. | :04:07. | :04:09.
That includes 38,000 tonnes of Christmas wrapping | :04:10. | :04:14.
paper and card and 192,000 real Christmas trees. | :04:15. | :04:18.
Some experts blame London's poor attempt at recycling | :04:19. | :04:19.
on the capital's growing population and the increasing number of people | :04:20. | :04:22.
renting, rather than buying their own homes. | :04:23. | :04:28.
But in Ealing, big improvements have been made just by | :04:29. | :04:31.
With Londoners doing their bit to make | :04:32. | :04:38.
Students at a school in north London have come up with an idea that | :04:39. | :04:44.
could raise hundreds of thousands of pounds for charity. | :04:45. | :04:47.
The group, from Skinners Academy in Stamford Hill, won a competition | :04:48. | :04:52.
Now, their idea is being put into practice, | :04:53. | :04:55.
Henrique was born with cystic hygroma and he needed a tracheostomy | :04:56. | :05:02.
Henrique's parents didn't know if he would ever talk. | :05:03. | :05:07.
But last month, after only a few hours of music therapy classes, | :05:08. | :05:13.
Got so chuffed when he first realised that sound | :05:14. | :05:17.
He said, "water", "grandma", and "hello". | :05:18. | :05:27.
Without fundrising, the charity that helps pay for these | :05:28. | :05:34.
And these students in Hackney have come up with a new way of raising | :05:35. | :05:40.
iRoundup is a system where pupils can round up every payment | :05:41. | :05:45.
for their school lunch, so a small part can be | :05:46. | :05:47.
We thought it would be easy to implement into the real world. | :05:48. | :05:54.
Their idea won a competition for young entrepreneurs, | :05:55. | :05:56.
Now the company that runs school lunch payments, | :05:57. | :06:01.
It's very rare that you hear a genuine new idea | :06:02. | :06:08.
We've already raised nearly ?10,000 just during this trial period. | :06:09. | :06:13.
With a full launch in 2017 we're expecting to raise | :06:14. | :06:15.
between ?150,000-?200,000 in the first year. | :06:16. | :06:21.
So, what do the students think about their idea of raising money | :06:22. | :06:24.
Thanks to the students, small change can make a big difference. | :06:25. | :06:44.
And it's been another cold and foggy day, let's have a check | :06:45. | :06:49.
Fog has been causing problems through the day-to-day on the roads | :06:50. | :06:56.
and flight cancellations and delays at our airports. | :06:57. | :06:58.
We still have a Met Office yellow weather warning in force for fog. | :06:59. | :07:01.
Visibility down to 100 metres, perhaps less at first tonight. | :07:02. | :07:04.
That fog and muggy weather will be widespread with a possibility | :07:05. | :07:06.
Through the night, we will probably start to see the worst of conditions | :07:07. | :07:11.
It won't be quite as murky as we start off Saturday but some | :07:12. | :07:17.
of us will have a frosty start to the day. | :07:18. | :07:19.
As we get through to New Year's Eve, there will be a lot of cloud around, | :07:20. | :07:23.
occasional brighter spells just about possible but it | :07:24. | :07:25.
won't be as murky thanks to the south-westerly | :07:26. | :07:27.
Temperatures reaching a high of 10 degrees. | :07:28. | :07:31.
A bit milder than it has been for the last few days. | :07:32. | :07:34.
The New Year celebrations, the weather looks something | :07:35. | :07:36.
like this, dry, quite cloudy, temperatures around 7 degrees | :07:37. | :07:38.
But then, for New Year's day, we have outbreaks of rain, | :07:39. | :07:46.
perhaps even a bit of winteriness over the highest hills and then | :07:47. | :07:49.
Good evening, fog has been a problem in recent days, slow changes over | :07:50. | :08:14.
the next 48 hours or so as this weather front moves south bringing | :08:15. | :08:19.
rain and behind it, much cleaner, cold arctic air which will sweep | :08:20. | :08:23.
that fog out of the way. The fog was dense in places, you could hardly | :08:24. | :08:27.
see across the Thames in Kingston, Greater London this afternoon. It | :08:28. | :08:31.
has been thickening up in the last few hours and if you are on the move | :08:32. | :08:35.
in the next few hours, into the morning, state shoes and two BBC | :08:36. | :08:38.
local radio because it will keep you up-to-date because it will be dense | :08:39. | :08:42.
in the morning. -- stay tuned. | :08:43. | :08:45. |
