in half an hour. Now, it's time to join the BBC's news teams where you | :00:00. | 3:59:59
are. Tonight on BBC London News: Vigils | :00:00. | :00:11.
are held across the capital to remember the 22 victims of last | :00:12. | :00:14.
night's concert attack, as Londoners The occurrence and if they want to | :00:15. | :00:27.
bring the fight worse than bring the fight us. | :00:28. | :00:27.
The Met has stepped up security in the wake of the attack with extra | :00:28. | :00:31.
officers on the streets for as long as needed. | :00:32. | :00:38.
People will see extra real issues patrols and officers out on the | :00:39. | :00:45.
streets. That includes Wembley and Twickenham. | :00:46. | :00:47.
How many people live in this rumour site? -- room? | :00:48. | :01:04.
The appalling breach of housing regulation, | :01:05. | :01:08.
where 26 migrants were living in a single house, some | :01:09. | :01:10.
And the boy from Stockwell who went onto become | :01:11. | :01:14.
Good evening, welcome to the programme with me Riz Lateef. | :01:15. | :01:33.
In the wake of the suicide bombing in Manchester, | :01:34. | :01:35.
the capital has been standing in solidarity. | :01:36. | :01:37.
Londoners know all too well the horrors of a terror attack. | :01:38. | :01:40.
Just two months ago, five people lost their lives | :01:41. | :01:42.
in the atrocity at Westminster, while the device used | :01:43. | :01:44.
at the Manchester Arena had echos of the 7/7 bombings. | :01:45. | :01:47.
22 people died last night, many of them children. | :01:48. | :01:49.
And as Tim Donovan reports, there have been impromptu vigils, | :01:50. | :01:51.
moments of silence and anger at the perpetrator of the attack. | :01:52. | :01:57.
Londoners have been through attacks on the city, one very recently but | :01:58. | :02:03.
today it was another city on their thoughts. It is cliches for the | :02:04. | :02:14.
reason. We're with you, Manchester. Don't let anyone one, we're bigger | :02:15. | :02:23.
than themselves best things to stick together and be strong. Pray for | :02:24. | :02:25.
each other and look after each other. The world needs a little bit | :02:26. | :02:29.
of love and I think that will get us along. Anyone who attacks young | :02:30. | :02:32.
girls is disgusting and their carers and if you want to bring the fight | :02:33. | :02:35.
to a stubborn fight less pedantic to little girls. Flags were lowered on | :02:36. | :02:46.
public buildings and mayor the who was elected by police last night | :02:47. | :02:56.
sent this message. The emergency services have our full support and | :02:57. | :02:59.
Erin live for us today. Manchester and the rest of Britain will never | :03:00. | :03:10.
be cowed by terrorism. For some it triggered the worst kind of | :03:11. | :03:16.
memories. This man was badly injured in the 7/7 attack and blown out of a | :03:17. | :03:24.
tube carriage. Total shock I couldn't believe it was happening | :03:25. | :03:27.
all over again. It is still quite hard to take in. I didn't really | :03:28. | :03:37.
want to go to work. You have to try and carry on. He knows, because his | :03:38. | :03:45.
wife went through it, what families in Manchester will be suffering. I | :03:46. | :03:50.
was a missing person for quite a long time and it is really hard how | :03:51. | :03:56.
difficult was deal with. Not having the information, to find some loved | :03:57. | :04:01.
one and had to go about that. That's where really feel it is hard | :04:02. | :04:11.
thinking about the people managers are having to do that right now. | :04:12. | :04:15.
City Hall said this evening that for people wanting to lay flowers are | :04:16. | :04:19.
spaces being created in Trafalgar Square. | :04:20. | :04:25.
Vigils are being held across the capital as people gather | :04:26. | :04:28.
together to remember those who lost their lives in the bombing. | :04:29. | :04:30.
An impromptu gathering is taking place at Trafalgar Square | :04:31. | :04:32.
where Yvonne Hall is for us tonight. | :04:33. | :04:37.
This is the sentiment being expressed here are Trafalgar Square | :04:38. | :04:42.
tonight. About 200 people have turned up so far to show simply in | :04:43. | :04:46.
solidarity with people in Manchester. Quite a few different | :04:47. | :04:49.
groups involved with this virtual including a group of bikers behind | :04:50. | :04:53.
this would attempt to show terrorist they are not afraid and life will go | :04:54. | :04:59.
on. Another group here say they have millions of supporters and they | :05:00. | :05:02.
believe the only way forward to combat the evil of terrorism is to | :05:03. | :05:06.
show love and compassion for all faiths and communities. Another | :05:07. | :05:11.
hundred or so people are expected here are Trafalgar Square this | :05:12. | :05:14.
evening and it is hoped the weather will continue like this and it will | :05:15. | :05:18.
be a huge for Julia in an hour or so. -- vigil. | :05:19. | :05:23.
Let's now go to Tolu Adeoye in Regents Park where people | :05:24. | :05:26.
of different faiths are attending a service at the London | :05:27. | :05:28.
A number of people from all faiths have gathered here to remember those | :05:29. | :05:38.
who lost their lives in Manchester. They say that all this attack has | :05:39. | :05:41.
done is try to divide people but they are coming together. I am | :05:42. | :05:56.
joined by Yusuf. These acts are committed in the name of religion | :05:57. | :06:03.
and Lee of all faiths and none are determined to show that these vile | :06:04. | :06:07.
acts cannot continue in the name of religion and we are determined that | :06:08. | :06:10.
the good name of religion is preserved and these people are | :06:11. | :06:18.
isolated from our community. So-called Islamic state have claimed | :06:19. | :06:22.
responsibility for the site. When something like this happens the | :06:23. | :06:24.
spotlight then goes on the Islamic faith. I am sorry to say that most | :06:25. | :06:31.
of the victims of the so-called Islamic state and Muslims. The | :06:32. | :06:40.
suicide attacks happen every day in Baghdad and in Istanbul and other | :06:41. | :06:47.
Muslim cities. But we really need is a global community to deal with this | :06:48. | :06:52.
global problem which is nothing to do with religion, it has to do with | :06:53. | :07:02.
power and money and oil and selling arms from the people who are behind | :07:03. | :07:06.
this and fund this. Are we really touching the surface and we are | :07:07. | :07:10.
always trying to condemn and treat the symptoms but we're really not | :07:11. | :07:14.
dealing with the root cause of this problem. Thank you very much. There | :07:15. | :07:21.
will be prayers for those who lost their lives. | :07:22. | :07:24.
Well, our Home Affairs Correspondent Nick Beake is here with me. | :07:25. | :07:27.
Londoners may have already seen that Scotland Yard has | :07:28. | :07:29.
increased police presence - and that's for reassurance? | :07:30. | :07:34.
Absolutely. I think it is worth stressing that the Met says that is | :07:35. | :07:44.
specific threat to London because of what happened last night. The terror | :07:45. | :07:48.
level has not been raised and if it were to go up higher it would be | :07:49. | :07:50.
critical which means an attack is imminent and that has not happened. | :07:51. | :07:54.
We had a commissioner stated today she wants to see more patrols in | :07:55. | :07:59.
London, armed and unarmed patrols in busy places and tourist hotspots and | :08:00. | :08:02.
we have a big weekend of sport coming up. We have the FDA cup final | :08:03. | :08:11.
at Wembley and Chelsea versus Arsenal and the rugby final at | :08:12. | :08:17.
Twickenham. Fans are being asked to arrive sooner rather than later so | :08:18. | :08:21.
bag searches can take place. They stressed the security resumes at | :08:22. | :08:25.
those places will be robust. Earlier I spoke to a Metropolitan Police | :08:26. | :08:29.
commander at Scotland Yard and asked how London may look and feel | :08:30. | :08:32.
different in the coming days. People will see an extra real issues | :08:33. | :08:37.
patrols and extra officers out on the street in relation to key | :08:38. | :08:42.
locations and also crowded places. The whole point of Hercules is to | :08:43. | :08:50.
avoid predictability. We will make sure Londoners a hostile environment | :08:51. | :08:54.
for terrorists. I mention sporting venues and people are big shops and | :08:55. | :08:59.
shopping centres they may see more police? We both make sure that | :09:00. | :09:04.
people see more police but if anybody sees anything they are | :09:05. | :09:08.
concerned about make sure the phone this so we can assist. So increased | :09:09. | :09:15.
security. But the Westminster attack is still very fresh in people's | :09:16. | :09:18.
minds. The attack in Manchester last night came two months to the day | :09:19. | :09:29.
since the attack at Westminster and the murder of four people and PC | :09:30. | :09:37.
Keith Bama. The concern was last night that somebody was able to | :09:38. | :09:39.
build and then detonate a viable device. -- Keith Palmer. There will | :09:40. | :09:53.
be concern for Scotland Yard and colleagues because someone has been | :09:54. | :09:58.
able to put together a bomb. We know that police have been concerned with | :09:59. | :10:09.
marauding attacks and this is a sign really to 7/7. We have not seen an | :10:10. | :10:17.
expose of use for 12 years. -- explosive used. | :10:18. | :10:23.
And we have tributes to the "perfect gentleman". | :10:24. | :10:35.
Londoners remember Sir Roger Moore, who's died aged 89. | :10:36. | :10:44.
To other news now and a family who were housing at least 26 | :10:45. | :10:47.
migrants in appalling conditions in North London are due to sentenced | :10:48. | :10:50.
The tenants were paying up to 70 pounds a week for rooms | :10:51. | :10:55.
jammed with bunk beds, with one occupant sleeping | :10:56. | :10:57.
In court in Willesden today because they were responsible for a property | :10:58. | :11:12.
with condition is described as appalling. We filmed back in July as | :11:13. | :11:17.
Brent council rated the four-bedroom semi. Up to 26 people were living | :11:18. | :11:30.
here and bunk beds were packed into nearly every room. | :11:31. | :11:38.
Inside the shed, a woman had been living. | :11:39. | :11:42.
Up to 26 people living in this property | :11:43. | :11:44.
paying somewhere between 60 and ?65 a week. | :11:45. | :11:51.
Today, the people who owned or managed this | :11:52. | :11:53.
property have appeared in court and have been convicted of multiple | :11:54. | :11:56.
The court was told the rent added up to | :11:57. | :12:03.
There were six men living in box bedrooms with three bunk beds per | :12:04. | :12:10.
room and when we find this shack with tarpaulins and pieces of timber | :12:11. | :12:13.
put together with the lady living in it I couldn't believe it. It was | :12:14. | :12:26.
disgraceful. Around 6000 moans per month were taken from this property. | :12:27. | :12:36.
-- ?6,000. The quartet this man the rent and this man known about the | :12:37. | :12:41.
state of the property he would've helped manage. Would you like to | :12:42. | :12:44.
live in those conditions in your House? They will all be sentenced at | :12:45. | :12:51.
Harrow Crown Court. A couple from West London | :12:52. | :12:57.
who want to take their sick baby son to America for treatment - | :12:58. | :13:00.
have asked Court of Appeal judges not to take away | :13:01. | :13:03.
their "only remaining hope". Doctors wish to withdraw his | :13:04. | :13:13.
life-support saying it is only prolonging his suffering. | :13:14. | :13:17.
Well, Helen Drew is outside court now where judges have been hearing | :13:18. | :13:20.
He was born healthy but with a genetic disorder meaning he has | :13:21. | :13:32.
progressive muscle and brain damage. His parents went to the High Court | :13:33. | :13:37.
last month because they want the chance to take their son to America | :13:38. | :13:42.
for treatment but at the time doctors who had been looking after | :13:43. | :13:46.
him at great Ormond Street said they believe his brain damage is | :13:47. | :13:49.
irreversible and it will just prolong the process of dying. The | :13:50. | :13:55.
High Court ruled in favour of great mistreat hospital but today his | :13:56. | :13:58.
parents came to the Court of Appeal because they still want to take | :13:59. | :14:01.
their son to America for that treatment. They said they wished to | :14:02. | :14:04.
exhaust all possible options and they said this is their only | :14:05. | :14:09.
remaining hope for his survival. The buyer still representing them -- | :14:10. | :14:16.
barrister still representing said great mistreat specialists are | :14:17. | :14:20.
usurping the parental function. It's been said by taking to America it | :14:21. | :14:24.
will not cause significant harm but if they do not they will ask what | :14:25. | :14:29.
if? They have raised the ?1.3 million needed to take him to | :14:30. | :14:34.
America from the from members of the public but today lawyers from great | :14:35. | :14:38.
ministry said that the pinch right is not for the pittance. -- great | :14:39. | :14:55.
Ormond Street. For the payments. -- parents. | :14:56. | :14:58.
We will hear the decision on Thursday afternoon. | :14:59. | :15:01.
The RMT union has suspended its forthcoming strike next week | :15:02. | :15:04.
The action scheduled by rail workers across the country was due to affect | :15:05. | :15:08.
the South East on the Southern line on the 30th May. | :15:09. | :15:11.
As many as 30 positive leads have been discovered as a result | :15:12. | :15:14.
of investigations carried out on piles of rubbish | :15:15. | :15:15.
Buckinghamshire County Council staff have been sifting through household | :15:16. | :15:19.
and building material, old cars and electrical goods | :15:20. | :15:21.
It'll now be shared with the Environment Agency. | :15:22. | :15:25.
Eurostar services to Amsterdam will operate direct to the city | :15:26. | :15:28.
There will be two trains a day and the journey | :15:29. | :15:32.
from St Pancras International will take just under four hours. | :15:33. | :15:34.
The company says it will compete with low-cost airlines on price, | :15:35. | :15:37.
speed, ease, convenience and quality of service. | :15:38. | :15:41.
It's being called a "health emergency" and London regularly | :15:42. | :15:44.
breaches legal limits for air quality. | :15:45. | :15:50.
Well, now researchers at Imperial College London have | :15:51. | :15:52.
shown why diesel fumes can worsen conditions like asthma. | :15:53. | :15:54.
It is not news that diesel fumes are a harm | :15:55. | :16:03.
It's estimated they contribute to the premature deaths of more | :16:04. | :16:08.
And cleaning the capital's air has become a political | :16:09. | :16:15.
In October the most polluting cars will pay a so called toxicity charge | :16:16. | :16:20.
An ultra low emission zone will follow in two years' time. | :16:21. | :16:35.
Today, researchers from Imperial college have published research | :16:36. | :16:37.
which shows how diesel particles attack the lungs | :16:38. | :16:39.
They activate receptors on the nerve endings that tell you to cough. | :16:40. | :17:05.
Basically the directly activate receptors which cause symptoms such | :17:06. | :17:13.
as cough. This is a problem for everybody but more of a problem for | :17:14. | :17:17.
those who have asthma and respiratory conditions. | :17:18. | :17:19.
Just ten days ago, doctors demonstrated at Downing Street, | :17:20. | :17:26.
calling for more to be done to tackle the issue. | :17:27. | :17:29.
The mayor of course wants the government to pay people to | :17:30. | :17:31.
Data shows that in schools and nurseries they care quality levels | :17:32. | :17:42.
are way above the legal limit and I want to see those driven down so | :17:43. | :17:49.
that no school and nursery has levels that breach world health | :17:50. | :17:50.
organisation limits. The team at Imperial | :17:51. | :17:52.
hope their research will lead to the issue of pollution moving up | :17:53. | :17:55.
the political agenda. Londoners have been paying tribute | :17:56. | :17:58.
to Sir Roger Moore who's He was born in Stockwell - | :17:59. | :18:00.
one of their most famous residents - Well, I was lucky enough to meet | :18:01. | :18:05.
Sir Roger eight years ago when we jumped in cab to take a trip | :18:06. | :18:10.
down memory lane. I lived at this house | :18:11. | :18:18.
here that is nicely painted. That was my bedroom | :18:19. | :18:23.
window, that one. That one there with | :18:24. | :18:38.
the shutters shut. This is Liberty Street, | :18:39. | :18:42.
I'd forgotten that. This is where my mother | :18:43. | :18:51.
would meet me on this corner And that used to be a little sweet | :18:52. | :18:53.
shop where we would go in with our ha'pennies and get boiled | :18:54. | :19:00.
sweets or sherbet dabs. How did the young boy from Stockwell | :19:01. | :19:04.
end up as James Bond? Being in the right place | :19:05. | :19:09.
at the right time. Just for us, because it is one of | :19:10. | :19:16.
those defining phrases, can you do the phrase where you | :19:17. | :19:19.
introduce yourself as Bond? Well, social media has been | :19:20. | :19:24.
inundated with tributes for example: Lots of you getting in touch | :19:25. | :20:08.
on our Facebook Page. You're so welcome to join | :20:09. | :20:11.
the conversation there Let's return to our top story - | :20:12. | :20:13.
and after the terror attack Music and sports centres say they | :20:14. | :20:32.
are increasing security. That includes Wembley into Twickenham. | :20:33. | :20:34.
Let's go to East London. Alice Bhandhukravi | :20:35. | :20:41.
is there for us now. The Latin UK awards celebrate the | :20:42. | :20:55.
contribution of Latin music in the UK. Organisers have faced a dilemma | :20:56. | :20:58.
of what to do this evening in light of the attack in Manchester | :20:59. | :21:04.
yesterday. They will be marking the attack in Manchester but as they | :21:05. | :21:07.
explain to me earlier this show will go on. The event represents the | :21:08. | :21:13.
opposite of what happened last night. It is about community and | :21:14. | :21:18.
solidarity and supporting each other and it is about giving a platform to | :21:19. | :21:23.
each other to shine and be the best you are. I guess in a way that is | :21:24. | :21:27.
the kind of message we want to convey. Of course this weekend the | :21:28. | :21:35.
biggest event is the FA Cup final at Wembley. The Met has released a | :21:36. | :21:40.
statement saying they will have extra armed officers in place across | :21:41. | :21:46.
all major sporting events. The message from the FA is that there | :21:47. | :21:51.
will be enhanced security for all events and football fans are being | :21:52. | :21:54.
asked to arrive earlier to make up for the fact that there will be | :21:55. | :21:58.
those extra security checks. At Twickenham the rugby season is | :21:59. | :22:02.
coming to an end this weekend and so there will be extra security | :22:03. | :22:06.
measures in place there. Of course other events are taking place | :22:07. | :22:10.
outside London. Luton will be hosting its annual carnival and | :22:11. | :22:13.
Bedfordshire Police say they are looking at whether there are | :22:14. | :22:16.
security measures will need to be stepped up. As one concert promoter | :22:17. | :22:21.
explained to us, to make safe events and particularly concerts is a | :22:22. | :22:27.
difficult task. The most vulnerable point is on the exit and therefore I | :22:28. | :22:31.
will presume all the arenas and promoters together will review how | :22:32. | :22:35.
to do with people leaving concerts. If it is outside the concert arena | :22:36. | :22:42.
itself with a concert takes place, if it is on the way out, it is very | :22:43. | :22:46.
difficult to do much more than is being done now. We're still waiting | :22:47. | :22:53.
to hear about what will happen at the O2. Ariane Grande Who's concert | :22:54. | :22:59.
was targeted in Manchester last night was due to play there on | :23:00. | :23:04.
Thursday and Friday, Saturday and Sunday and organisers there have | :23:05. | :23:08.
said they have been in touch with the promoters to find out if that | :23:09. | :23:10.
concerts will go ahead. Last night 's events are all the | :23:11. | :23:30.
more shocking cos of the children involved. Like many parents waking | :23:31. | :23:39.
to the news of a terror attack in Manchester Arena Amanda Dawson | :23:40. | :23:41.
wondered how to be cheaper ten-year-old son. They have tickets | :23:42. | :23:49.
for the same concept in London on Thursday. The first thing he wanted | :23:50. | :23:54.
to do was come and watch it on the news for himself. I think that | :23:55. | :23:58.
there's that all disbelief when you hear something. When you see it | :23:59. | :24:03.
becomes really real. That is kind of how our conversation went and you | :24:04. | :24:05.
were really quite angry this morning. I was really curious. What | :24:06. | :24:13.
really curious about? I was curious about what happened. This is new | :24:14. | :24:30.
shine. -- Newsround. Some programmes might have content which helps | :24:31. | :24:36.
explain to parents how to explain to their children. But what advice is | :24:37. | :24:42.
the two pins when talking to children? The NSPCC advises to | :24:43. | :24:45.
listen carefully to a child's fears and worries and comfort and avoid | :24:46. | :24:51.
complicated explanations could be frightening and confusing. Because | :24:52. | :24:55.
of these events and children have been victims children feel much | :24:56. | :25:00.
closer to these events and emotionally traumatised. They. They | :25:01. | :25:03.
think they are more likely to become victims as a consequence and as a | :25:04. | :25:07.
result of that they have higher levels of anxiety and therefore need | :25:08. | :25:11.
additional support to be able to address some of the worries they | :25:12. | :25:18.
have. You hear about these bombings and these terrorist attacks. It is | :25:19. | :25:21.
quite hard when you read about them and it makes you question is what is | :25:22. | :25:27.
next. I want him to go out and enjoy what London has two offer. I don't | :25:28. | :25:31.
want them to feel scared every time they get on the cheap on a bus or if | :25:32. | :25:35.
they go to a big event like that. To reinforce that message Amanda says | :25:36. | :25:39.
that she and her son still want to see Ariane Grande in concert. They | :25:40. | :25:45.
are waiting to see if the gig is going ahead. | :25:46. | :25:48.
Let's turn now to a check on the weather and Elizabeth has joined us. | :25:49. | :26:00.
It has been cloudier than many of us expected but it did break up | :26:01. | :26:07.
eventually. There will be more sunshine for the rest of the week | :26:08. | :26:11.
from Thursday onwards notably. It will stay dry and feel quite warm as | :26:12. | :26:14.
we approach the bank holiday weekend. He was the cloud fizzling | :26:15. | :26:19.
away this evening. Overnight tonight there the bits and pieces of cloud | :26:20. | :26:24.
coming and going. Possibly a cloudy start of the day tomorrow and | :26:25. | :26:28.
feeling a overnight tonight. Temperatures not dropping out of | :26:29. | :26:31.
double figures and starting of the day and 13 or 14 degrees into | :26:32. | :26:35.
tomorrow morning. Tomorrow there will be plenty of cloud around but | :26:36. | :26:39.
we have a change of wind direction. We have high pressure sat firmly | :26:40. | :26:43.
over us. The winds will be light and the cloud should break and we should | :26:44. | :26:49.
get some sunshine and temperatures will be on a par with Monday, 2425 | :26:50. | :26:56.
Celsius. We will start to see the area of high pressure migrate | :26:57. | :26:59.
eastwards on Thursday. That will in the very warm air from the near | :27:00. | :27:05.
continent. It looks like we will see temperatures take a leap on Thursday | :27:06. | :27:06.
and Friday. We are looking at probably 2627 | :27:07. | :27:21.
degrees on Thursday and lots of sunshine around. Same sort of thing | :27:22. | :27:24.
on Friday. At the time you get to Saturday could be looking at 30 or | :27:25. | :27:27.
31 Celsius. Of course it will break down. Will a breakdown over the bank | :27:28. | :27:30.
holiday weekend just after? That we still have two firm up. I | :27:31. | :27:47.
Below me, hundreds of people have just been leaving Albert Square | :27:48. | :27:51.
It is just one of the many ways this city is coming to terms | :27:52. | :27:56.
The newly elected Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, | :27:57. | :28:01.
has said the city will show it's true spirit. | :28:02. | :28:05.
As our special correspondent Fergal Keane reports now | :28:06. | :28:11.
Our cities cannot live in constant fear of terror, however | :28:12. | :28:16.
So when the night is torn by violence, | :28:17. | :28:23.
there is shock, there is strength and there are questions. | :28:24. | :28:25.
Is today we asked the Mancunians we met to speak | :28:26. | :28:32.
Kind of, when's it going to end, really? | :28:33. | :28:45.
It's incredibly sad and our way of life, you know, is sort of | :28:46. | :28:48.
being controlled by it now, as much as we don't want it to be. | :28:49. | :28:51.
We're such a united city and it's just | :28:52. | :28:53.
It's quite harrowing to think what happened last night. | :28:54. | :28:56.
It's very devastating and how young people are that fell victim to it, | :28:57. | :28:59.
You wouldn't expect it for anywhere, but of Manchester, it's a welcoming | :29:00. | :29:07.
You don't expect things like this to happen here, but | :29:08. | :29:12.
It makes you scared at first, but you just | :29:13. | :29:15.
realise you can't let fear win and you get on with it. | :29:16. | :29:18.
You thank the emergency services for all they've | :29:19. | :29:19.
done and, yeah, it's Manchester, life goes on. | :29:20. | :29:22.
Yet also a place of emphatic declaration. | :29:23. | :29:36.
We ask that you allow the perpetrators of this evil, evil | :29:37. | :29:42.
action, ala, bring them to justice. It's hard. How can I, if I had one | :29:43. | :29:48.
of the victim's fathers, let's say, or someone who lost their daughter | :29:49. | :29:54.
or son in yesterday's attack and I'm saying to him, George, Alan, this is | :29:55. | :29:58.
nothing to do with us. He knows the person who did it adhered to a | :29:59. | :30:02.
so-called faith. It's hard to talk to a person like that, to say this | :30:03. | :30:06.
is nothing to do with the faith. I'm saying to people publicly and | :30:07. | :30:12.
privately, we have to distance our faith from these barbaric | :30:13. | :30:14.
terrorists. That's what they are. They are criminals with criminal | :30:15. | :30:18.
mind sets. People here already knew what it meant to face and recover | :30:19. | :30:25.
from terrorist violence. An IRA bomb devastated Manchester City centre i | :30:26. | :30:32.
1996. Three years earlier, in nearby Warrington, an IRA bomb killed | :30:33. | :30:38.
three-year-old Jonathan Ball and 12-year-old Tim CAP Parry. Tim's | :30:39. | :30:41.
father, Colin, became a peace campaigner. Today he was thinking of | :30:42. | :30:48.
the burden of parents' grief. Closing a child is the most awful | :30:49. | :30:54.
event in anybody's life and there's no easy way to say you'll one day | :30:55. | :31:00.
get over it, you will one day recover. You might, you might not. | :31:01. | :31:06.
The feelings are deep, deep, they are almost animal-like. You lock | :31:07. | :31:09.
everything down. You go inside on yourself. The fact that terrorism is | :31:10. | :31:12.
part of the collective memory of this city does nothing to reduce the | :31:13. | :31:19.
sense of raw shock felt here today. Manchester's past experience does | :31:20. | :31:22.
remind us of the resilience of democracies in the face of terrorist | :31:23. | :31:27.
campaigns. And of the strength of the bonds of community. After terror | :31:28. | :31:35.
attacks the word "defiance" is often used. There is that here, but the | :31:36. | :31:40.
communal sense of grief that is most profound. Ferg app Keane, BBC News, | :31:41. | :31:48.
Manchester. Huw uw Edwards will be back here with the latest from the | :31:49. | :31:51.
BBC's news at ten. That's all from us. Before we go, I'll leave you | :31:52. | :31:55.
with some of the images of the day. A day of emotion, deviance and | :31:56. | :32:05.
solidarity. Goodbye. Always remember, never forget, forever | :32:06. | :32:10.
Manchester. Choose love, Manchester, thank you. | :32:11. | :32:15. |
