The terrorists who targeted the capital - now a former police

:00:00.:00:07.

chief blames Muslim leaders for failing to act.

:00:08.:00:14.

This is a call for action to do something much more other than just

:00:15.:00:21.

merely denouncing or condemning something that is bad.

:00:22.:00:24.

But one London Mosque has hit back by dismissing the claims.

:00:25.:00:27.

A brother and sister are arrested after a suspected burglar is shot

:00:28.:00:31.

dead outside their caravan in the woods.

:00:32.:00:35.

Reaction to the new EU rules mean a huge slice of London's

:00:36.:00:38.

banking business could move out after Brexit.

:00:39.:00:42.

And travelling up to 80 miles an hour - the drones taking over

:00:43.:00:45.

Alexandra Palace in the UK's first professional race.

:00:46.:00:59.

Good evening and welcome to the programme.

:01:00.:01:01.

Muslim leaders have been accused of 'hollow words'

:01:02.:01:06.

It comes from a former Met police commander who was the force's most

:01:07.:01:11.

Mak Chisty retired last week but today spoke out ,

:01:12.:01:17.

accusing leaders of failing to tackle violent extremism.

:01:18.:01:22.

But one Mosque has hit back, claiming its community works

:01:23.:01:24.

Here's our Home Affairs correspondent Nick Beake.

:01:25.:01:33.

Three mass murders in the space of ten weeks. 35 people dead in London

:01:34.:01:42.

and Manchester. As the UK is most senior Muslim police officer, the

:01:43.:01:47.

commander led the tributes and try to ease any community tensions. But

:01:48.:01:52.

now he says Muslim leaders need to do much more than simply condemn

:01:53.:01:56.

terror attacks after they have happened.

:01:57.:01:57.

The feedback I'm getting back, post-London Bridge and Borough

:01:58.:02:00.

market, is, actually, it isn't as believable anymore.

:02:01.:02:02.

People think they are just hollow words.

:02:03.:02:05.

People want to see actions and deeds following those words.

:02:06.:02:08.

So, this is a call for action, to do something much more other

:02:09.:02:12.

than just merely denouncing something or condemning

:02:13.:02:14.

For him, action means driving out what he calls the menace of

:02:15.:02:26.

extremism lurking within Muslim communities in London and beyond. He

:02:27.:02:32.

says it is not just about reporting extremist views to the authorities

:02:33.:02:36.

but challenging them as well. He also wants changes to mosques in

:02:37.:02:41.

particular he says half the people on the management committees should

:02:42.:02:45.

be women and he wants Imam is from different branches of his lamp to

:02:46.:02:49.

come together to preach a common message that it is perfectly

:02:50.:02:52.

possible to be both British and Muslim. The East London Mosque in

:02:53.:02:58.

Whitechapel says it is Britain's largest mosque where the family of

:02:59.:03:02.

the three Bethnal Green girls who went to Syria come to pray. Salman

:03:03.:03:08.

says he and other worshippers have been attacked by Islamic extremists

:03:09.:03:12.

when they challenge their views. He believes singling out mosques or

:03:13.:03:16.

criticism is unfair. The criticisms by the commander are unfounded. I

:03:17.:03:23.

think he is out of touch. If you look at the last two incidents with

:03:24.:03:27.

respect to London Bridge and the Manchester attacks, the individuals

:03:28.:03:32.

were reported by members of the Muslim community and we have a good

:03:33.:03:36.

relationship with the police, the local police here and any time have

:03:37.:03:40.

any issues or suspect anyone of any criminality we are more than happy

:03:41.:03:45.

to report those individuals. These are the men behind the Westminster

:03:46.:03:49.

and London Bridge attacks. It is not known what drove them to murder but

:03:50.:03:55.

some believe London gang culture and online radicalisation are more to

:03:56.:03:58.

blame the mosques for the growing terror threat. We find from many

:03:59.:04:03.

terrorists who have committed atrocities here and in Europe, many

:04:04.:04:11.

had prior prison sentences, not for extremism but a criminal behaviour,

:04:12.:04:16.

drug-taking, gangs. The commander says he is facing a backlash rages

:04:17.:04:21.

comments but insists more uncomfortable conversations need to

:04:22.:04:22.

be had. Now we've learnt today

:04:23.:04:25.

that the new person in charge of counter terror policing is London

:04:26.:04:27.

MP, Nick Hurd. More on this from our political

:04:28.:04:30.

reporter, Nicola Ford - Nicola, this as part

:04:31.:04:32.

of a cabinet reshuffle. Yes, the Prime minister has been

:04:33.:04:44.

giving out new details of her ministerial team. Nick Hurd, the

:04:45.:04:50.

Ruislip Northwood and pin MP who becomes the new minister for

:04:51.:04:55.

policing and fire, his main -- name may be familiar because his father

:04:56.:04:59.

Douglas Hurd served under Margaret Thatcher and John that -- John

:05:00.:05:09.

major. Labour accused the Conservatives of cutting police

:05:10.:05:12.

numbers. The second is Greg hands, the MP for Chelsea Fulham and he

:05:13.:05:16.

becomes the new minister for London. The opposition was held by Gavin

:05:17.:05:21.

Barwell who lost his seat last week and is now the Prime minister's

:05:22.:05:25.

chief of staff. This position was set up when Theresa May came into

:05:26.:05:29.

power last year and it shadows the Labour Mayor Khan. Great handset is

:05:30.:05:37.

looking forward to working with the mayor and Brexit will be high on

:05:38.:05:41.

their inbox and finally another hot topic for London, housing. The MP

:05:42.:05:47.

for Reading West is the new Housing minister and the Conservatives

:05:48.:05:51.

promised to build a million homes by 2020 and housing insiders will be

:05:52.:05:54.

watching with interest as if he can the target.

:05:55.:05:56.

Meanwhile, the terror attacks on Westminster and London Bridge

:05:57.:05:59.

have lowered visitor numbers at some of London's top tourist attractions.

:06:00.:06:03.

That's according to the company which runs the London Eye

:06:04.:06:06.

Let's get more on this from Marc Ashdown who's in central London.

:06:07.:06:17.

According to Visit London this is number six on the list

:06:18.:06:20.

But for its owners - Merlin Entertainment -

:06:21.:06:24.

The company also runs Madame Tussauds, Legoland,

:06:25.:06:29.

A trading update this morning can best be described

:06:30.:06:35.

The Chief Exec Nick Varney said the Westminster

:06:36.:06:42.

Bridge attack in March - which is literally just over there -

:06:43.:06:45.

had an impact on the domestic day-trip market.

:06:46.:06:47.

So in effect, fewer people from London and beyond are choosing

:06:48.:06:50.

to come here for a day-out in the school holidays

:06:51.:06:52.

And that drop-off he says has continued after the Manchester

:06:53.:06:56.

The big unknown still is the overseas visitors.

:06:57.:07:01.

Those figures were up after last year's referendum

:07:02.:07:03.

But there's a lag in bookings - visitors from abroad tend to book

:07:04.:07:15.

two thirds months in advance, so insiders I spoke to today tell me

:07:16.:07:19.

we'll have to wait to see if the attacks have had an impact -

:07:20.:07:23.

but fair to say they're bracing themselves for more bad news.

:07:24.:07:25.

Tho tourists here today seemed relatively bullish.

:07:26.:07:28.

A letter family members and friends were a bit worried but I still feel

:07:29.:07:38.

like it is a safe place. It looks like there were lots of security

:07:39.:07:43.

around London everywhere. Looking around now I find myself looking and

:07:44.:07:47.

if somebody is behind me, or next to me I'm not feeling that comfortable.

:07:48.:07:52.

We were a bit frightened but yes, the show must go on. What is being

:07:53.:07:57.

done to address this question mark Today's report also came

:07:58.:07:59.

with lots of positive language - "London is resilient" -

:08:00.:08:03.

"will bounce back" - Sort of thing we've

:08:04.:08:05.

heard from elsewhere - mayor's office for example

:08:06.:08:12.

in recent months. 66 million tourism visitors came

:08:13.:08:16.

to London last year - Market generates ?36

:08:17.:08:22.

billion every year Now all this is only expected

:08:23.:08:31.

to grow in the coming years too. Despite today's warnings, Merlin

:08:32.:08:42.

itself is "cautiously optimistic". So there's confidence that

:08:43.:08:47.

despite a difficult, fairly gloomy few months,

:08:48.:08:49.

the future is bright. A cycling gridlock -

:08:50.:08:57.

how anti-terror barriers on London's I will be talking to you about 3-D

:08:58.:09:17.

photography and my unseen Queen in 3-D photographs. A brother and

:09:18.:09:29.

sister who have lived in a secluded woodland in Berkshire for 50 years

:09:30.:09:32.

have been arrested after a man was shot dead at their caravan.

:09:33.:09:37.

Officers were called to reports of a shooting in the early hours

:09:38.:09:40.

This remains a major police operation.

:09:41.:09:44.

The search for evidence about what led up to the fatal

:09:45.:09:47.

shooting today spreading further away from the scene as a 48 year old

:09:48.:09:50.

man was arrested in nearby Slough on suspicion of burglary.

:09:51.:09:56.

Forensic teams meanwhile continued their work at

:09:57.:09:59.

the caravan where it is thought an attempted break-in sparked the

:10:00.:10:02.

The caravan's residents are believed to be a brother and

:10:03.:10:07.

sister and by all accounts led a reclusive lifestyle despite living

:10:08.:10:10.

just a short distance from the M4 and M25

:10:11.:10:13.

motorways and under the

:10:14.:10:15.

People who use the footpaths say they rarely

:10:16.:10:19.

Despite living here off the grid, as it was described, they were known

:10:20.:10:25.

I happened to leave my house and I locked the door

:10:26.:10:31.

and there is this person in front of me and after a few minutes she

:10:32.:10:35.

turned around and said, are you following me?

:10:36.:10:37.

I continued to walk and she turned around again two or three times

:10:38.:10:44.

until I got to where I branched off so I thought

:10:45.:10:46.

she was hypersensitive for

:10:47.:10:47.

This afternoon as firearms officers arrived at the

:10:48.:10:53.

scene, Thames Valley police confirmed they have now recovered a

:10:54.:10:56.

gun thought to have been used in the shooting.

:10:57.:11:06.

It deals with around 885 billion euro per day and is hugely lucrative

:11:07.:11:09.

But now what's known as the euro clearing market,

:11:10.:11:13.

which settles business conducted in the EU currency could be forced

:11:14.:11:15.

to move to continental Europe - after Britain leaves the EU.

:11:16.:11:23.

It's led to fears that london's reputation as a financial

:11:24.:11:26.

powerhouse could be damaged, as Katharine Carpenter explains.

:11:27.:11:40.

You'd be forgiven for thinking he is talking a different language, a

:11:41.:11:45.

jargon filled EU Commission statement proposing a set of reforms

:11:46.:11:51.

which would strike at London's financial heart. Pair it back and

:11:52.:11:55.

this is a power struggle over business worth billions in the city.

:11:56.:11:59.

That business is called clearing and it is the process which has made

:12:00.:12:03.

trading less risky and more efficient since the day deals were

:12:04.:12:11.

done in coffee houses. Clearing houses stands between the buyer and

:12:12.:12:15.

seller guaranteeing both sides of the trade will be honoured so one

:12:16.:12:19.

party will pay, the buyer and the other party will sell. Europe wants

:12:20.:12:25.

to repatriate all that valuable business back into the EU at some

:12:26.:12:29.

point and London and not surprisingly has built a reputation

:12:30.:12:34.

on being good, efficient and low cost in that clearing space wants to

:12:35.:12:39.

hang onto it. Until now, membership the EU has allowed the city to argue

:12:40.:12:42.

against change that now we are leaving the EU is having another go

:12:43.:12:47.

so what would it mean here if more of the Euro clearing business went

:12:48.:12:52.

to the constant? Clearly if more business moves then it is jobs lost

:12:53.:12:56.

in London and tax lost but who do not envisage that will happen. Why?

:12:57.:13:03.

Clearing is done in London, dollar and yen clearing because that is

:13:04.:13:06.

where the marketplaces and whether participants want to be. It is where

:13:07.:13:10.

the infrastructure is and it cannot just be picked up and moved

:13:11.:13:14.

somewhere else without substantial risk. And EU has stopped far short

:13:15.:13:18.

of saying all Euro clearing must be moved what it does want is stricter

:13:19.:13:23.

supervision of London's clearing houses and the power to fall --

:13:24.:13:28.

force big operations to relocate if it gets nervous about financial

:13:29.:13:32.

stability. Timing is significant in the sense with the EU UK talks about

:13:33.:13:37.

to begin next week the Europeans are trying to put some pressure, moral

:13:38.:13:41.

and otherwise on the UK. This is a power grab, it will have some impact

:13:42.:13:46.

but overall London is definitely going to remain the major financial

:13:47.:13:51.

centre within Europe. The city might be bullish but it has had a taste of

:13:52.:13:56.

Europe flexing its muscles today. Of that, they'll be much more to come.

:13:57.:13:59.

A new appeal's been launched almost two years after the brutal robbery

:14:00.:14:02.

of a partially-blind 85-year-old woman in her own home.

:14:03.:14:05.

Police have released this photo of a man they want to speak

:14:06.:14:08.

Another man is serving nine years in prison for the break-in

:14:09.:14:14.

The men responsible threw the victim to the ground and ripped jewellery

:14:15.:14:18.

London Gatwick has been rated as the second worst

:14:19.:14:23.

airport in the world, according to figures compiled

:14:24.:14:25.

A recent fault with the Airport's baggage system meant

:14:26.:14:32.

flights were leaving without passengers' luggage.

:14:33.:14:34.

It was one of 86 airlines analysed in terms of quality and service,

:14:35.:14:38.

the number of delayed flights throughout 2017 and its track record

:14:39.:14:41.

The number of cast iron streetlights have changed from 700 a year ago to

:14:42.:15:03.

400 today and it is part of a street light upgrade. Reading borough

:15:04.:15:06.

council says it appreciates the heritage value of the lights but

:15:07.:15:09.

some have had serious structural faults. It is an important issue

:15:10.:15:16.

because this is marking our heritage and more importantly it is how it

:15:17.:15:21.

feels when you go around this Victorian area which is still pretty

:15:22.:15:26.

untouched and it makes it, it is one of the things that gives it that

:15:27.:15:28.

spirit of place. There's concern that the anti terror

:15:29.:15:30.

barriers put on many of London's bridges are making cycling

:15:31.:15:32.

routes more dangerous. Cyclists say the safety precaution

:15:33.:15:36.

is causing huge congestion and want Here's our transport

:15:37.:15:39.

correspondent Tom Edwards. This was the main cycle lane

:15:40.:15:45.

over Blackfriars Bridge These concrete security barriers

:15:46.:15:47.

are making it much more difficult for cyclists and pedestrians to use

:15:48.:15:55.

the route and the bottleneck is It is obviously annoying,

:15:56.:15:58.

but I see why it is necessary. I've seen people who have gone back

:15:59.:16:06.

to using the road instead So, in terms of trying to save one

:16:07.:16:08.

possible unlikely risk, they just are putting more people

:16:09.:16:14.

at risk of sending them It is appropriate,

:16:15.:16:16.

that is what is needed. This morning, there were also three

:16:17.:16:22.

TfL staff controlling the crowds. The barriers were installed

:16:23.:16:26.

on a number of London's Bridges after the terror attack

:16:27.:16:30.

ten days ago. This is part of cycle

:16:31.:16:32.

superhighway six into the city. In peak times, 1500

:16:33.:16:36.

cyclists an hour use it. Campaigners say it now

:16:37.:16:40.

needs redesigning. There are also concerns

:16:41.:16:43.

about barriers squeezing road We totally understand

:16:44.:16:46.

and are supportive of measures We just feel like with a small

:16:47.:16:50.

few tweaks and changes, they could be working much better

:16:51.:16:56.

than they are at the moment. Particularly Blackfriars,

:16:57.:16:59.

the north side of the bridge, it is really stacking up,

:17:00.:17:02.

it is making things very difficult for pedestrians and for cyclists

:17:03.:17:04.

crossing the bridge. And we think, with some small

:17:05.:17:07.

alterations, it could much better. These barriers have

:17:08.:17:12.

been put in by the Met with little consultation

:17:13.:17:14.

with Westminster Council City Hall says it is looking at now

:17:15.:17:15.

short-term improvements and a long-term solution

:17:16.:17:22.

to this problem. City Hall also says the safety

:17:23.:17:27.

of all road users remains the number one priority but campaigners say

:17:28.:17:31.

long-term these interventions need Now she's not the regular commuter

:17:32.:17:33.

you'd expect to sit next But this morning Her Majesty

:17:34.:17:45.

the Queen along with Prince Philip re-enacted a historic journey made

:17:46.:17:49.

by Queen Victoria 175 years ago - the first train journey to have been

:17:50.:17:54.

taken by a British monarch. Most commuters do not get this

:17:55.:18:09.

perception. The Queen arriving at Slough station today just as I

:18:10.:18:14.

great-great-grandmother did 175 years ago. Today marks the

:18:15.:18:17.

anniversary of the first train journey undertaken by a British

:18:18.:18:23.

monarch. Queen Victoria. In 1842 she travelled from Slough to London

:18:24.:18:26.

Paddington in 30 minutes writing in her diary she was quite impressed by

:18:27.:18:30.

the lack of dust or heat. Today's journey on a new high tat she

:18:31.:18:35.

express train was over ten minutes faster accompanied by Prince Philip,

:18:36.:18:43.

the Queen was travelling with Isambard Thomas, his namesake and

:18:44.:18:45.

ancestor Isambard Kingdom Brunel created the great Western Railway

:18:46.:18:47.

route. Isambard Kingdom Brunel went on the first train with Queen

:18:48.:18:52.

Victoria in 1842 and he was assisting the driver, it was more of

:18:53.:18:55.

a privileged to sit next to her Majesty. Not only did we do it

:18:56.:19:02.

hundreds 75 years ago, we did it to the minute the train left at 12pm

:19:03.:19:07.

and we were able to give the Queen a glimpse into the future as well as

:19:08.:19:13.

looking back on some great history. I am delighted to ask your

:19:14.:19:17.

Majesty... It wasn't all a re-creation, today the Queen

:19:18.:19:21.

finished her visit revealing a power cart named after her. The Queen

:19:22.:19:24.

Elizabeth II will help carry passengers from the autumn.

:19:25.:19:28.

Six-time Paralympic champion David Weir has announced his

:19:29.:19:31.

retirement from wheelchair racing on the track.

:19:32.:19:35.

The 38-year-old from Sutton will continue to compete in the marathon,

:19:36.:19:39.

but says next month's Anniversary Games at London Stadium

:19:40.:19:41.

A great opportunity to race with no pressure, to say goodbye and enjoy

:19:42.:19:52.

the moment of racing in the fantastic stadium in London.

:19:53.:19:59.

Imagine being inside a video game, travelling at high speed,

:20:00.:20:02.

That's a bit like drone racing - which is growing in popularity.

:20:03.:20:09.

And tonight the first professional race in the UK will be held

:20:10.:20:12.

Emma Jones has been to see the drones in action.

:20:13.:20:20.

It is a relatively new sport but tonight hundreds of fans will be

:20:21.:20:26.

in Alexandra Palace to watch these top pilots in action.

:20:27.:20:31.

In the last few years, we've seen it go from low local

:20:32.:20:34.

fields, local races, 10-15 people, to all of a sudden

:20:35.:20:37.

Thousands of people across the globe and now we're travelling

:20:38.:20:41.

The drones are operated with remote controls and the pilots use goggles

:20:42.:20:46.

The drone has two cameras, a grow pro and while we are flying around

:20:47.:21:01.

the courses are seeing what the drone seize and it is almost as

:21:02.:21:05.

though we on board. We feel like we are having an out of body

:21:06.:21:06.

experience. Much like this view from a drone

:21:07.:21:08.

flown by amateur racers in a London park, these fans understand why

:21:09.:21:11.

the sport is becoming so popular. You basically feel like a bird,

:21:12.:21:14.

it gives you the opportunity to fly, Humanity itself always

:21:15.:21:17.

desired to be able to fly. It's kind of like when Anakin

:21:18.:21:23.

Skywalker in Star Wars, is flying his pod around,

:21:24.:21:27.

it's like that but real life. With a recent race through

:21:28.:21:29.

the streets of Paris, could we be seeing something similar

:21:30.:21:34.

soon here in London? We've looked at a lot

is really important to us, it is an iconic thing in London,

:21:42.:21:44.

there is a lot of history, it means a lot to Londoners

:21:45.:21:47.

but I think it's just the beginning and there's so many places we'd love

:21:48.:21:50.

to race in the city of London. So, tonight might be the first

Instead of having a flak -- flat picture you have a window which you

can look through and it is like you could relive the moment and touch

the people. This is that window, a stereoscope that comes with this

collection of mostly unseen photographs. This is a great shot,

pretty good like this. But we will try and see what effect this has.

That is Freddie Mercury as everyone remembers him, I suspect. Owning the

It felt like a lovely day today. Yes, and I weather watchers have

:24:41.:24:52.

been inspired to take the rain pictures, no better place than the

:24:53.:24:55.

Surrey countryside on a day like today, gorgeous conditions just not

:24:56.:25:01.

too far away from Guildford and plenty more sunshine as we go

:25:02.:25:04.

through the middle part of the week but it has been warm and up-to-date,

:25:05.:25:07.

it might be uncomfortable because it will turn hot as some of us and

:25:08.:25:12.

humid for all. This evening we still have plenty of centring to enjoy,

:25:13.:25:17.

warmth left in the day yet. As we go through the night and a clear skies

:25:18.:25:21.

and light wind, temperatures will not fall away too far. In urban

areas, near coast line 14, 15, 16 degrees is the lowest temperature

tonight so it will start feeling Willy quite humid as we go through

the night. However, a warm start for the commute tomorrow. Light winds

again so UV will be high and the pollen will be very high again. In

terms of temperature, we are looking in London at 27, 20 8 degrees, it

:25:55.:26:00.

will not be very warm but we will be right up there and it will be

:26:01.:26:04.

feeling increasingly humid. You will notice that the most as we go

:26:05.:26:08.

through the night on Wednesday and into Thursday. These other

:26:09.:26:12.

temperatures I have picked out on Thursday morning, 17 degrees and

:26:13.:26:17.

bear in mind it will take a few hours to get there so warmer than

:26:18.:26:20.

that through much of the night. And a comfortable sultry night Wednesday

:26:21.:26:26.

night and we start warm on Thursday with some sunshine. Then, a spell of

:26:27.:26:30.

cloudy weather in the middle part of the day from this cold front on

:26:31.:26:35.

Thursday producing some rain and feeling fresher towards the end of

:26:36.:26:39.

the day as the sun returns to us towards the evening. So, more

:26:40.:26:44.

breezy, fresher but the heat builds again into the weekend and it is

nice when summer stays into the weekend as well.
