Tonight on BBC London News: Commuters are hit by a triple whammy | :00:00. | :00:00.
of travel disruption, including a derailment at Waterloo. | :00:00. | :00:22.
There have been trained ailments, platforms closed. I don't know if | :00:23. | :00:36.
they have told us anything, really. Just that it took an hour and a bit | :00:37. | :00:38.
to get into Waterloo. We will have the latest | :00:39. | :00:42.
and find out how journeys Also ahead: She took | :00:43. | :00:44.
her own life in jail - now her mother calls for better | :00:45. | :00:47.
protection of prisoners Her death, it still nonsense. If | :00:48. | :00:54.
people had done their proper job, she would still be here. | :00:55. | :00:56.
Plus the Dartford sprinter who helped Britain win relay gold. | :00:57. | :00:59.
Adam Gemili reflects on his moment of glory at the London stadium. | :01:00. | :01:02.
And swapping the cloakroom for the stage - how standing | :01:03. | :01:04.
in for a sick soprano turned this student into an overnight star. | :01:05. | :01:18.
A very warm welcome to the programme. | :01:19. | :01:23.
First tonight, there was huge rush hour disruption for thousands | :01:24. | :01:29.
Three separate incidents on the transport network causing | :01:30. | :01:34.
First a train derailment at Waterloo, then problems | :01:35. | :01:36.
at King's Cross after a train crashed into platform buffers, | :01:37. | :01:40.
On the Underground, Holborn station was evacuated | :01:41. | :01:44.
Here's our transport correspondent, Tom Edwards. | :01:45. | :01:54.
At 5:40am this morning, just outside the UK's | :01:55. | :01:56.
busiest station, Waterloo, a passenger service collided with | :01:57. | :01:58.
All day, commuters have been warned not to use the station. | :01:59. | :02:10.
I was trying to get out of London, there were no trains, | :02:11. | :02:13.
One thing on top of another, signal failures, derailments, | :02:14. | :02:18.
train breakdowns, half of the platforms are closed anyaway. | :02:19. | :02:22.
I do not know if they have told us anything, really. | :02:23. | :02:33.
Slow and taking an hour and a bit to get into Waterloo. | :02:34. | :02:36.
No-one was hurt but investigators are trying to find out why | :02:37. | :02:39.
the passenger train went onto the wrong track. | :02:40. | :02:43.
At 6:20am this morning, this train failed to stop in time | :02:44. | :02:46.
at platform nine at King's Cross, and hit the buffers at speed. | :02:47. | :02:49.
They said they were sent flying due to the impact. | :02:50. | :02:54.
And at 9am this morning at Holborn tube station, | :02:55. | :02:58.
it was evacuated after a train motor caught fire. | :02:59. | :03:05.
It later reopened, but there was panic as many passengers wrongly | :03:06. | :03:08.
It is the second tube train fire in four days. | :03:09. | :03:15.
There was a lot of people being really aggressive. | :03:16. | :03:18.
There was a kid with her mum and a scooter. | :03:19. | :03:26.
And she was trying to get to the platform, but she couldn't | :03:27. | :03:29.
turn around because there were so many people running out. | :03:30. | :03:31.
A lot of people sort of rushing toward escalators. | :03:32. | :03:36.
It was completely packed, there was nowhere to move. | :03:37. | :03:40.
At one point, the doors were closing and some people | :03:41. | :03:42.
Before the train had stopped, a massive bang. | :03:43. | :03:46.
Then immediately, the carriage I was in, at the end, | :03:47. | :03:48.
People rose from their seats and try to funnel out of the doors. | :03:49. | :03:52.
People were just manic in trying to get out. | :03:53. | :04:00.
Back at Waterloo, workers are in the middle of a huge redevelopment. | :04:01. | :04:03.
Ten out of 24 platforms were already caused. | :04:04. | :04:07.
Ten out of 24 platforms were already closed. | :04:08. | :04:08.
The concern is that the planned reopening date of 28 | :04:09. | :04:13.
We are obviously very concerned about the derailment at Waterloo, | :04:14. | :04:16.
We do not want the Waterloo upgrade to overrun. | :04:17. | :04:25.
And if it does, we will be calling on Network Rail and the Government | :04:26. | :04:29.
Very few trains are running in and out of Waterloo at the moment. | :04:30. | :04:36.
The disruption is expected to last until tomorrow. | :04:37. | :04:41.
What's the latest update on the disruption? | :04:42. | :04:49.
Well, it's not very nice year at Waterloo, if you are a commuter. It | :04:50. | :04:57.
is extremely busy. Lots of cancellation, lots of delays and | :04:58. | :05:02.
lots of crowds. These are crowd spotters. There are watching here | :05:03. | :05:06.
for any potential problems. I am afraid if you are a commuter uses | :05:07. | :05:14.
Waterloo, there is some bad news. Network Rail have said you should | :05:15. | :05:17.
avoid Waterloo Station tomorrow. We are working very hard to ensure | :05:18. | :05:21.
that we are able to safely re-rail the train that partially | :05:22. | :05:28.
derailed this morning. We will then look no | :05:29. | :05:30.
surrounding area for any damage that may have been done, | :05:31. | :05:32.
in order that we can rectify that. And actually then get train | :05:33. | :05:35.
services back up and running And obviously huge | :05:36. | :05:37.
redevelopment going on here. 28 August is the finish | :05:38. | :05:40.
date for that. Are you confident you will finish it | :05:41. | :05:42.
on time on 28 August? So work has continued, | :05:43. | :05:45.
including today, since this And we are continuing | :05:46. | :05:47.
to monitor the progress. The project has actually been | :05:48. | :05:50.
progressing very well and we will clearly continue | :05:51. | :05:52.
to monitor it very closely. Network Rail don't know | :05:53. | :06:06.
categorically say that this project will finish on time. Also, they | :06:07. | :06:12.
might have to deal with other problems because this franchise | :06:13. | :06:18.
changes on 20 guest. Talk about timing. Thank you. | :06:19. | :06:22.
I am in the oldest allotments in London. Should they be knocked down | :06:23. | :06:32.
to make way for social housing? The words of a mother whose | :06:33. | :06:39.
32-year-old daughter took her own life inside | :06:40. | :06:43.
Holloway Prison. Sarah Reed had mental health issues | :06:44. | :06:45.
when she died last year. An inquest found a series | :06:46. | :06:47.
of failings by staff Now her mother is calling for better | :06:48. | :06:50.
protection of vulnerable prisoners, This is Sarah Reed in | :06:51. | :06:53.
2012 being assaulted by a Metropolitan Police officer, | :06:54. | :07:02.
after being accused of shoplifting. He was later charged | :07:03. | :07:05.
with assault and dismissed. She struggled with mental health | :07:06. | :07:10.
issues for years after the death She would have seasons | :07:11. | :07:13.
where she would go into dark moods. You know, whenever she thought | :07:14. | :07:21.
about the child that she lost. Because she never | :07:22. | :07:23.
recovered from that. In 2015, she was admitted to the | :07:24. | :07:27.
Maudsley Hospital in south London. Her family claim she was sexually | :07:28. | :07:31.
assaulted by another Afterwords, she was | :07:32. | :07:34.
transferred to Holloway Marilyn says her daughter | :07:35. | :07:39.
needed care, not custody It needs to stop, it | :07:40. | :07:44.
needs to be investigated, we need to have things put in place, | :07:45. | :07:50.
that mental health is dealt It's something that if people had | :07:51. | :07:53.
done their proper jobs, At her inquest last month, | :07:54. | :08:05.
Peter Thornton QC raised concerns about the care Sarah received | :08:06. | :08:08.
and highlighted The jury found amongst | :08:09. | :08:10.
the shortcomings there'd been a failure by staff here to treat | :08:11. | :08:17.
sera in a timely manner. A failure in the management | :08:18. | :08:21.
of her medication and monitoring. And an unacceptable number | :08:22. | :08:24.
of cancelled visits by staff. It found that all of these failings | :08:25. | :08:28.
significantly contributed Holloway Prison closed last year | :08:29. | :08:32.
after being branded as inadequate Sarah's inquest revealed how | :08:33. | :08:39.
some national policies Now campaigners say Sarah is just | :08:40. | :08:41.
one example of how the system is failing prisoners | :08:42. | :08:56.
with mental illness. What we need to do is invest | :08:57. | :08:58.
in quality specialist services in the community, | :08:59. | :09:01.
especially mental health services, given that we know the majority | :09:02. | :09:04.
of women who are sent to prison have The Government say they take mental | :09:05. | :09:07.
health of prisoners extremely seriously and have launched | :09:08. | :09:12.
a suicide and self harm reduction I would go as far as to say | :09:13. | :09:14.
she was like my friend. Marilyn remembers her daughter | :09:15. | :09:27.
with fondness, and hopes her death In what's believed to be | :09:28. | :09:30.
the first case of its kind, a cyclist is facing charges | :09:31. | :09:39.
of killing a mother-of-two after Let's cross to Charlotte Franks | :09:40. | :09:42.
who's got more details. Charlie Alston is on trial for | :09:43. | :10:01.
manslaughter. He was allegedly riding his might at 80 mph when he | :10:02. | :10:09.
crashed into a 44-year-old mother of two. She had been on her lunch | :10:10. | :10:12.
break. She was crossing the road at the time of the incident in February | :10:13. | :10:18.
last year. Following the crash, she suffered catastrophic head injuries, | :10:19. | :10:23.
including two skull fractures. She was taken to hospital but died a | :10:24. | :10:29.
week later. What was heard in court? Well, today in court, witness | :10:30. | :10:34.
described what they saw. They said following the crash they saw the | :10:35. | :10:46.
cyclist go over to her and start shouting at her as she lay injured | :10:47. | :10:49.
on the floor. He told the court the cyclist clamped her to the ground. | :10:50. | :10:56.
The journey had already heard that Charlie Alston had been riding a | :10:57. | :11:03.
fixed wheel track bicycle was no front break. These bikes are not | :11:04. | :11:06.
legally allowed to be on the road unless they have a modification. | :11:07. | :11:11.
That is an extra front break. The court was told how a few days after | :11:12. | :11:16.
the incident he posted on an online forum. In it, he wrote, it is a | :11:17. | :11:21.
pretty serious incidents I won't bother saying she deserved it. It | :11:22. | :11:25.
was her fault but she did not deserve it. He went on to claim that | :11:26. | :11:28.
she had been on her mobile phone at the time. He said people either | :11:29. | :11:45.
think they are invincible or have zero respect for cyclists. Charlie | :11:46. | :11:47.
Alston denies the charge of manslaughter and the case continues. | :11:48. | :11:48.
Thank you. It is a row which pits campaigners | :11:49. | :11:54.
for two of the capital's most On one side are those who want | :11:55. | :11:57.
more affordable homes. On the other, those | :11:58. | :12:01.
who want London's green The disagreement is over London's | :12:02. | :12:03.
oldest allotments in Ealing, as Caroline Davies has been finding | :12:04. | :12:06.
out. I've really struggled, | :12:07. | :12:11.
but these are supposed I've really struggled, but these | :12:12. | :12:17.
are supposed to be parsnips. There are a few and that is sort | :12:18. | :12:20.
of what is coming up here, but parsnips are notoriously | :12:21. | :12:23.
difficult. Nolan is new to | :12:24. | :12:29.
Northfield allotments. It's really about bringing my kids | :12:30. | :12:35.
down here and actually letting them understand how fruit and veg | :12:36. | :12:37.
and flowers grow. Just a short time been here, | :12:38. | :12:39.
I have been able to feel that The allotments were much bigger | :12:40. | :12:42.
than they were founded in 1830s. Now the charity that owns the land, | :12:43. | :12:46.
Pathways, want to develop more. Every bit of land from here back | :12:47. | :12:52.
to the road is the area that the charity want | :12:53. | :12:57.
permission to develop. It's only 4% of the overall | :12:58. | :12:58.
allotment, which might not sound like a lot, but the people | :12:59. | :13:01.
here are worried that So if I said you, just eat one | :13:02. | :13:03.
little cube of that bar of chocolate, you will realise how | :13:04. | :13:11.
good it is and eventually you will come back for more | :13:12. | :13:13.
until there is nothing left. The homes the charity | :13:14. | :13:16.
want to build would be for older He lives across the road | :13:17. | :13:19.
in another Pathways flat. Due to unforeseen | :13:20. | :13:25.
personal circumstances, and I was basically homeless, | :13:26. | :13:28.
jobless and if I hadn't come to Pathways, I believe | :13:29. | :13:34.
I would still now be homeless. For the sake of a few allotments, | :13:35. | :13:36.
you know, something can be achieved for people that are in the position | :13:37. | :13:42.
that I was in eight years ago. Some of the properties | :13:43. | :13:52.
might be sold privately, but the charity says that will only | :13:53. | :13:59.
happen if they need the funding. They say they can't promise | :14:00. | :14:02.
they will never build on more of the allotments because they don't | :14:03. | :14:05.
want to bind future boards, What do you say to people That | :14:06. | :14:08.
say this is nimbyism? We realise we are in politically | :14:09. | :14:16.
difficult situation because we most definitely need social housing, | :14:17. | :14:18.
but everything I read says So we have to find | :14:19. | :14:20.
a balance somewhere. I mean, that is for | :14:21. | :14:23.
the politicians to decide. But all I can do is fight for my | :14:24. | :14:30.
side which is for the green space. The allotment owners want | :14:31. | :14:34.
the charity to look at other options to build on because once this | :14:35. | :14:37.
Greenland has gone, they don't So what do we prioritise? Green | :14:38. | :14:53.
space of social housing? The mere has spoken about building more | :14:54. | :15:01.
genuinely affordable homes. This case shows it is almost impossible | :15:02. | :15:05.
to do. It is something the council and the Mayors office will have to | :15:06. | :15:10.
grapple with. Because sometimes finding a compromise really isn't so | :15:11. | :15:12.
simple. The stuff of dreams. House standing | :15:13. | :15:29.
in for a six soprano turned the student into an overnight star. | :15:30. | :15:32.
Monday took the title for the warmest day in August so far. Today | :15:33. | :15:40.
was not too bad either. Could it be three in a row? | :15:41. | :15:44.
Since the Grenfell Tower fire, there has been lots of attention | :15:45. | :15:46.
on the estimated 700,000 or so Londoners who | :15:47. | :15:48.
BBC London has spent a week meeting the residents | :15:49. | :15:51.
of one of the capital's first residential blocks. | :15:52. | :15:53.
Trellick tower, in was designed by the architect Erno Goldfinger | :15:54. | :15:56.
as an inspiration for the future living by creating | :15:57. | :15:59.
In the first of our series of films, we hear from Chris Paulsen, | :16:00. | :16:09.
who has lived there since the 70s, on whether that vision | :16:10. | :16:12.
Sorry, I called you by accident. | :16:13. | :16:22.
My name is Chris Paulsen and I'm originally from Cape Town. | :16:23. | :16:31.
I've lived in Trellick Tower since '77. | :16:32. | :16:34.
One of the problems we have here is the rubbish chutes | :16:35. | :16:43.
are not built properly, there is some kind of kink in it. | :16:44. | :16:49.
Occasionally, it gets blocked up and it ends | :16:50. | :16:50.
up with people dumping their rubbish out here. | :16:51. | :16:54.
We will have to see if we can clear it up quickly | :16:55. | :16:57.
They have way too much on their plate. | :16:58. | :17:05.
And, of course, people on your own landing, taking in, say, | :17:06. | :17:19.
a parcel in from the postman for your neighbour, | :17:20. | :17:21.
What was it like when you first moved in? | :17:22. | :17:25.
They expected the place to run itself, really. | :17:26. | :17:31.
There were laundry chutes, with quite expensive equipment in it. | :17:32. | :17:39.
That is what you expect with coin-operated machinery | :17:40. | :17:47.
There's never really been any serious trouble. | :17:48. | :18:03.
Just the one time, I think a woman got raped during the carnival. | :18:04. | :18:06.
It's one of my favourite areas in London. | :18:07. | :18:08.
For him, it really was a super Saturday. | :18:09. | :18:24.
Dartford sprinter Adam Gemili has been talking about that moment | :18:25. | :18:27.
of triumph at the London Stadium when he helped Great Britain become | :18:28. | :18:30.
sprint relay World Champions for the first time. | :18:31. | :18:32.
Reflecting on the greatest achievement of his career - | :18:33. | :18:34.
he says he had something to prove, as Chris Slegg reports. | :18:35. | :18:42.
Great Britain, four by 100 metre relay world champions. | :18:43. | :18:48.
For Adam Gemili, Saturday night is still sinking in. | :18:49. | :18:58.
It was the best I have ever felt on track. | :18:59. | :19:01.
To get a gold medal, not just with three of my good mates, | :19:02. | :19:05.
but do it in front of a home crowd of 60,000 British fans, | :19:06. | :19:08.
Jamaica's Usain Bolt pulling up injured in his very last | :19:09. | :19:16.
So how far did gold going to make up from the disappointment | :19:17. | :19:24.
of being left out of Britain's squad for the 100 metres and 200 metres? | :19:25. | :19:29.
It was tough to watch the individual events in London. | :19:30. | :19:34.
And know that I wasn't going to be competing. | :19:35. | :19:36.
They were so open, especially the 200 metres. | :19:37. | :19:39.
The first time watching a race that I thought anyone could sort of when. | :19:40. | :19:42.
The first time watching a race that I thought anyone could sort of win. | :19:43. | :19:45.
But I got on with it and dealt with it. | :19:46. | :19:48.
I just had to go out there and do my bit for the really. | :19:49. | :19:51.
I just had to go out there and do my bit for the relay. | :19:52. | :19:54.
I was fortunate enough then pick me, I had a point to prove | :19:55. | :19:58.
and I was just going to go as fast as I can. | :19:59. | :20:00.
This was the verdict of Michael Johnson. | :20:01. | :20:05.
But it is the support from Mum Sasha which has meant the most. | :20:06. | :20:11.
My whole family and my friends were lucky enough | :20:12. | :20:16.
And to see them, it was the best feeling to show | :20:17. | :20:22.
And to see them, it was the best feeling to share | :20:23. | :20:25.
Share it with them and with 60,000 others who will never forget 2017's | :20:26. | :20:29.
Chris, Adam Gemili is one of a number of athletes who come | :20:30. | :20:34.
from in and around the capital who flourished at | :20:35. | :20:36.
Who else should we be keeping an eye on in the run-up to the next | :20:37. | :20:41.
British athletics had a medal target of 6-8 for these championships. They | :20:42. | :20:59.
got to that tally. Opinion is split on the true health of British | :21:00. | :21:04.
athletics. And looking at the positives, one of those is Blake. | :21:05. | :21:10.
Born in new one. He finished fourth in the 200 metres and ran the anchor | :21:11. | :21:17.
that we have been speaking about. His mum lives in Jamaica. They | :21:18. | :21:19.
hadn't seen each other for three years until she was in the stadium | :21:20. | :21:28.
cheering him on. Also 21-year-old Dina Asher-Smith who we have seen a | :21:29. | :21:31.
lot of on this programme. She finished fourth. She broke her back | :21:32. | :21:46.
in February, so just to be at these championships was an achievement. | :21:47. | :21:49.
Incredible. One athlete promised gold on this programme in Tokyo? | :21:50. | :21:56.
Caroline Flint. To speak that confidently to the media is rare. He | :21:57. | :22:00.
did so after finishing fourth and just missing out on bronze in the | :22:01. | :22:08.
800 metres. He was speaking with so much confidence. His parents run a | :22:09. | :22:15.
fish and chip shop in Watford. He has true faith in his ability. We | :22:16. | :22:24.
shall keep an eye on all of them. Thank you. | :22:25. | :22:26.
It is the break many performers dream of. | :22:27. | :22:29.
One of the main singers is taken ill, you are asked | :22:30. | :22:32.
to step in at short notice and you play a blinder. | :22:33. | :22:35.
That's what happened to a 23-year-old student | :22:36. | :22:36.
from Chiswick who works evenings at London's Wigmore Hall. | :22:37. | :22:38.
Alice Bhandhukravi has been to meet the rising star. | :22:39. | :22:51.
I do a couple of shifts here a week waiting for patrons. She has worked | :22:52. | :23:02.
in the cloakroom and onstage as page turner. So what happened at the last | :23:03. | :23:10.
concert of the summer season didn't quite fit her job description. | :23:11. | :23:23.
When one of the sopranos went off sick, music graduate Millie was cold | :23:24. | :23:32.
by the director to take her place. But she had left her mobile phone at | :23:33. | :23:37.
home. I had loads of mist calls, texts and e-mails. I phoned John | :23:38. | :23:46.
Gilhooly and he asked if I could step in for the concert on Saturday | :23:47. | :23:52.
because the singer has tonsillitis. I said yes. I felt very rocky. It | :23:53. | :23:58.
could have been anyone. There are some fantastic singers who work | :23:59. | :24:03.
here. I didn't hesitate. I went straight to learning the music. | :24:04. | :24:09.
That's the priority. Jesse Norman opened the season here in the 1980s. | :24:10. | :24:14.
Wigmore Hall is one of the most prestigious classical music venues | :24:15. | :24:19.
in the world. On the night in question, Milly got a mention in a | :24:20. | :24:28.
5-star review. It is a tall order to perform on a night like that when | :24:29. | :24:33.
you are surrounded by very well established singers, ten or 15 years | :24:34. | :24:37.
older than her in many cases. They were thrilled to welcome somebody | :24:38. | :24:43.
knew a long. She will be returning to job in the cloakroom, but his | :24:44. | :24:48.
plans to return to the stage for an next year. | :24:49. | :24:58.
It was a lovely day to go to the park in Chiswick. As we move into | :24:59. | :25:16.
tomorrow, it is looking like another lovely day. Dry and bright with some | :25:17. | :25:22.
sunshine around as well. We have high pressure pushing in and it will | :25:23. | :25:26.
keep things settled through the evening and overnight and into the | :25:27. | :25:31.
beginning of tomorrow. Looking to the west, weather front is pushing | :25:32. | :25:34.
across and it will bring some outbreaks of rain into Thursday. A | :25:35. | :25:41.
lovely evening with plenty of late spells of sunshine. And overnight | :25:42. | :25:49.
law between 12 and 14 Celsius. Single figures possible in rural | :25:50. | :25:55.
areas. Some sunshine around first thing. Some patches of cloud. | :25:56. | :26:01.
Temperature is not doing too badly. A maximum of 23 or 24 degrees. | :26:02. | :26:08.
Moving through tomorrow evening and overnight, the weather front will | :26:09. | :26:11.
start to creep across, bringing outbreaks of rain. It could be quite | :26:12. | :26:15.
heavy as we move into Thursday morning. The rain continues to make | :26:16. | :26:19.
its way eastwards as we begin the day on Thursday. Starting to see | :26:20. | :26:24.
some bright intervals developing from the West. Sunny spells and some | :26:25. | :26:29.
scattered showers to look out for. Temperatures not too bad. As we move | :26:30. | :26:35.
to Friday, we started hitting the breeze picking up slightly, not | :26:36. | :26:41.
feeling quite as warm with some scattered showers in the mix. | :26:42. | :26:45.
Maximum temperatures of around 20 degrees. We start the weekend on a | :26:46. | :26:50.
similar note. We saw to see some improvement. At the moment, it looks | :26:51. | :26:55.
like it will be dry on Sunday as well. | :26:56. | :26:58.
Recapping the headlines: The government has set out its plans | :26:59. | :27:01.
for trading with the EU and the rest of the world after Brexit. | :27:02. | :27:04.
Ministers want a temporary relationship with Europe, | :27:05. | :27:13.
while a more permanent arrangement is developed. | :27:14. | :27:15.
The EU parliament's chief negotiator described that as a fantasy. | :27:16. | :27:17.
The public inquiry into the Grenfell Tower fire - | :27:18. | :27:19.
which left more than 80 people dead - is officially under way today. | :27:20. | :27:22.
It will examine how the blaze started and the actions | :27:23. | :27:25.
Millions of rail passengers will see the biggest rise | :27:26. | :27:28.
They are going up by 3.6% in January, because of a rise | :27:29. | :27:32.
That's it for now, thanks for joining us. | :27:33. | :27:36.
I'll be back with our late news at 10:30pm. | :27:37. | :27:38.
You're always welcome to get in touch on Facebook. | :27:39. | :27:40.
From all the team, have a lovely evening. | :27:41. | :27:43. |
