I'm Alice Bhandhukravi for the news where you are. | :00:11. | :00:14.
As we've been hearing, Notting Hill Carnival | :00:15. | :00:17.
is drawing to a close shortly and, overall, it's been a successful | :00:18. | :00:20.
event, despite heightened concerns over security. | :00:21. | :00:23.
Latest police figures suggest arrests are down on last year. | :00:24. | :00:28.
And, for the second day running, respects were paid | :00:29. | :00:30.
to the victims of Grenfell Tower, as Dan Freedman reports. | :00:31. | :00:33.
It is carnival day two, and we are stowaways on board one | :00:34. | :00:42.
We are on board Smoky Joe's Roadshow float. | :00:43. | :00:54.
The noise is deafening, the bass is shaking my chest. | :00:55. | :00:56.
But on the ground amongst the sequins is a security | :00:57. | :01:02.
challenge heightened by | :01:03. | :01:04.
an unprecedented year of terror in London. | :01:05. | :01:06.
Things are developing, and so are our responses | :01:07. | :01:15.
to the nature and extent of any possible threat. | :01:16. | :01:18.
Clearly, we are using technology to support us | :01:19. | :01:20.
And so we will use anything that is lawful | :01:21. | :01:26.
and proportionate to help us keep communities safe. | :01:27. | :01:30.
So far, arrests are down compared to last year. | :01:31. | :01:34.
Anything could happen to anyone, anywhere. | :01:35. | :01:40.
That is what terrorists want to do, be inside and make you afraid, | :01:41. | :01:43.
We have our roots in the West Indies, | :01:44. | :01:51.
whatever, but we see it as we are all one. | :01:52. | :01:56.
Once again, today, at 3pm, the sound systems | :01:57. | :02:01.
were silenced as a mark of respect for the victims of Grenfell. | :02:02. | :02:07.
If you judge a community on how it responds in the | :02:08. | :02:11.
face of terror and tragedy, then this community is passing that test | :02:12. | :02:14.
Believe it or not, this is what Carnival looks like when it is | :02:15. | :02:27.
coming to an end, quite a name down. There are literally thousands of | :02:28. | :02:31.
people on the streets. We have had more than 1 million people here | :02:32. | :02:37.
across the weekend. It is not even the world's biggest, that accolade | :02:38. | :02:42.
goes to Rio. I have to say the weather here today, it has been | :02:43. | :02:47.
warmer than Brazil. That is why the London Ambulance Service has been | :02:48. | :02:50.
telling everyone to keep drinking as much water as possible. We have seen | :02:51. | :02:58.
some incidences of people being carried to the ambulance and | :02:59. | :03:02.
emergency service tents, clearly needing attention. | :03:03. | :03:06.
Amidst the colour and costumes, the most poignant moment and memorable | :03:07. | :03:11.
moment so far of Carnival 2017, when the sound systems quietened for a | :03:12. | :03:16.
minute on both days at 3pm, and people turned their mind to the | :03:17. | :03:25.
victims of them fell tower just half a mile from here. | :03:26. | :03:27.
A teenage boy has died at the Reading Music Festival. | :03:28. | :03:30.
Paramedics were called to a tent in one of the campsites, | :03:31. | :03:32.
but the 17 year-old was already dead. | :03:33. | :03:34.
Police say his death is being treated as "unexplained". | :03:35. | :03:39.
Next, it's a martial art you may not have heard of. | :03:40. | :03:41.
Gatka is combat training followed by Sikhs. | :03:42. | :03:43.
Although traditionally fought with a sword, nowadays, | :03:44. | :03:45.
competitions are less danberous, using wooden sticks to spar. | :03:46. | :03:50.
Today, the national championships were held in Chigwell. | :03:51. | :03:52.
In the red corner, and the blue, this is the Gatka UK Championship, | :03:53. | :04:02.
Yes, gatka was introduced to the Sikh fold by the sixth | :04:03. | :04:11.
This also meant not just physically or aggressively, | :04:12. | :04:14.
but humbleness without service to mankind, without meditation, | :04:15. | :04:16.
without forgiveness, without compassion, you can't | :04:17. | :04:17.
The aim is to land the most hits on your opponent, and defend | :04:18. | :04:26.
Hundreds of years old, it came to the UK 25 years ago. | :04:27. | :04:33.
Now, there are thousands of practitioners, or gatka badge, | :04:34. | :04:36.
It has taught us a lot of discipline, commitment. | :04:37. | :04:42.
We made lots of friends while being here. | :04:43. | :04:45.
It helps them stay connected to their roots. | :04:46. | :04:51.
And the values that their parents would have taught us. | :04:52. | :04:53.
Before I would look down on the floor. | :04:54. | :05:04.
Now I can look them in the eye and have a proper conversation. | :05:05. | :05:08.
It is watched over by the new MP for Slough, also president | :05:09. | :05:11.
In other parts of the world, people looked to London for leadership. | :05:12. | :05:17.
That is why we are holding this for the second year out | :05:18. | :05:25.
of five, we have held the championship in London. | :05:26. | :05:27.
I am hoping this annual event will go from strength to strength. | :05:28. | :05:30.
And maybe the gatka champion of tomorrow | :05:31. | :05:32.
We have been lucky with the glorious weather. | :05:33. | :05:48.
I had given up in August, but a beautiful day. | :05:49. | :05:52.
Now, a lovely evening as well with warm sunshine. | :05:53. | :05:56.
Through the night, we will see some cloud in Kent and Sussex and Thames | :05:57. | :06:00.
Estuary. Even one or two showers in the early | :06:01. | :06:05.
hours, very warm, 17. More cloud to start, mist patches | :06:06. | :06:09.
first thing. The afternoon brings more warm | :06:10. | :06:13.
sunshine but not as hot as today. The mid-20s. Not so on Wednesday. A | :06:14. | :06:18.
good deal fresher, rain moving up into the afternoon. | :06:19. | :06:21.
We're back later in the Ten O'Clock News. | :06:22. | :06:24.
The weather today has been pretty warm. Temperatures have got up to 28 | :06:25. | :06:46.
Celsius. It is the warmest late August bank | :06:47. | :06:57.
holiday on record. We are just checking that. It was funny across a | :06:58. | :07:01.
lot of the country but not everywhere. These are the | :07:02. | :07:06.
temperatures at eight o'clock. Still 25 degrees in London. That shows how | :07:07. | :07:11.
warm the areas across the UK. It will stay warm across England and | :07:12. | :07:17.
Wales. To the north of this weather front which will bring some spots of | :07:18. | :07:22.
rain to Yorkshire and Wales, it is a lot fresher with the air coming of | :07:23. | :07:28.
the ocean. Tomorrow, a lot more cloud around | :07:29. | :07:29. |
