That's all from the BBC News at Six,
so it's goodbye from me - | 0:00:00 | 0:00:07
Tonight on BBC London News. | 0:00:07 | 0:00:09
Tackling knife violence -
the Mayor's new campaign message | 0:00:09 | 0:00:11
says "London Needs You Alive"- | 0:00:11 | 0:00:13
This is part of a package
of measures, along with schools | 0:00:13 | 0:00:16
playing their part, along
with police playing their part, | 0:00:16 | 0:00:19
along with parents, civic
leaders, youth leaders. | 0:00:19 | 0:00:20
All of us have a role to play
in making sure we address | 0:00:20 | 0:00:23
the issue of knife crime. | 0:00:23 | 0:00:25
We'll also investigate
what's behind the rise. | 0:00:25 | 0:00:27
Also tonight... | 0:00:27 | 0:00:28
The number of people who've reduced
the asking price of the house | 0:00:28 | 0:00:31
they're selling is at its highest
level in five years. | 0:00:31 | 0:00:36

lives through sailing. | 0:00:36 | 0:00:39
How Children In Need is helping
charities like this one. | 0:00:39 | 0:00:46
Everybody's talking about Jamie,
the gay teenager whose story | 0:00:46 | 0:00:48
of wearing a dress to the school
prom has been turned | 0:00:48 | 0:00:51
into a west end musical. | 0:00:51 | 0:01:00
Good evening and welcome
to the programme. | 0:01:00 | 0:01:02
I'm Claudia-Liza Armah. | 0:01:02 | 0:01:04
16 young people have been stabbed
to death on the streets | 0:01:04 | 0:01:06
of London this year -
that's up by almost 30% with some | 0:01:06 | 0:01:09
saying it's "an epidemic". | 0:01:09 | 0:01:10
Today, City Hall outlined a new plan
it hopes will help to save lives. | 0:01:10 | 0:01:15
The mayor, Sadiq Khan,
is using social media | 0:01:15 | 0:01:17
to spread the message -
but with so many violent videos | 0:01:17 | 0:01:20
available online glamorising knives,
will young people take any notice? | 0:01:20 | 0:01:22
Here's our home affairs
correspondent Nick Beake. | 0:01:22 | 0:01:32
Young voices from different parts
of our city, but all | 0:01:38 | 0:01:40
with the same message. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:43
After a year of more stabbings,
this is the Mayor's attempt to get | 0:01:48 | 0:01:52
teenagers to think twice before
reaching for a blade. | 0:01:52 | 0:01:57
The plea is that London desperately
needs their talents. | 0:01:57 | 0:01:59
Remember, London needs you alive. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:01
Your talent is needed,
your brain is needed, | 0:02:01 | 0:02:06
your intelligence is needed. | 0:02:06 | 0:02:08
HIP HOP MUSIC. | 0:02:08 | 0:02:11
The musician Bossman Birdie
used to carry a knife | 0:02:11 | 0:02:13
growing up in Tottenham. | 0:02:14 | 0:02:18
He then spent time in prison
for making a threat to kill. | 0:02:18 | 0:02:21
Now, City Hall have signed him up
for their anti-knife campaign. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:27
To me, it's a complete waste of life
and it's a waste of this beautiful | 0:02:27 | 0:02:30
city that we are occupants of,
London. | 0:02:30 | 0:02:35
When you're going around,
carrying a knife, you know, | 0:02:35 | 0:02:39
you're giving away your opportunity
to become something crazy. | 0:02:39 | 0:02:43
Three, two, one,
London needs you alive! | 0:02:43 | 0:02:48
This morning in Brixton Sadiq Khan
met children who have | 0:02:48 | 0:02:51
been posting online,
explaining why their | 0:02:51 | 0:02:53
lives are valuable. | 0:02:53 | 0:02:55
It's a campaign backed by London
rappers, bloggers and musicians. | 0:02:55 | 0:02:59
It is hoped their status
on social media will help | 0:02:59 | 0:03:01
the message get through. | 0:03:01 | 0:03:02
Is this actually going
to make a difference? | 0:03:02 | 0:03:05
Look, we've got to do
all that we can to address the issue | 0:03:05 | 0:03:10
of knife crime, which is rising
across the country, | 0:03:10 | 0:03:12
not just in London. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:13
This is part of a package
of measures, along with schools | 0:03:13 | 0:03:16
playing their part, the police
playing their part, parents, | 0:03:16 | 0:03:18
civic leaders, youth leaders. | 0:03:18 | 0:03:19
All of us have a role to play
in making sure we address | 0:03:19 | 0:03:22
the issue of knife crime. | 0:03:22 | 0:03:23
Yvonne Lawson's teenage
son Godwin was stabbed | 0:03:23 | 0:03:25
to death seven years ago. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:27
What does she make of the campaign? | 0:03:27 | 0:03:30
It can make a slight
difference for the younger | 0:03:30 | 0:03:32
generation, the under 16s. | 0:03:32 | 0:03:36
Whether it can make a huge
difference to the young people that | 0:03:36 | 0:03:39
are already engrossed
in criminality, that's | 0:03:39 | 0:03:41
yet to be proven. | 0:03:41 | 0:03:44
This positive message may well get
through to some kids in London, | 0:03:44 | 0:03:49
but there's no doubt it will also be
competing with many other | 0:03:49 | 0:03:52
negative messages online. | 0:03:52 | 0:03:55
We're talking about videos and music
which glorify violence, | 0:03:55 | 0:03:59
intensify gang rivalry,
and lead to more knife crime. | 0:03:59 | 0:04:04
For eight months this year,
YouTube refused the Met Police's | 0:04:04 | 0:04:08
request to take down
these four videos. | 0:04:08 | 0:04:12
Now they've relented,
apart from this one, still up today, | 0:04:12 | 0:04:15
which Scotland Yard claims
is encouraging stabbings. | 0:04:15 | 0:04:18
Bossman Birdie simply sees these
videos as a waste of time. | 0:04:18 | 0:04:24
You're that talented,
to sit there and write these lyrics, | 0:04:24 | 0:04:29
thinking of metaphors,
thinking of rhyming schemes. | 0:04:29 | 0:04:33
To basically make something
that is not going to go | 0:04:33 | 0:04:35
anywhere, purposely. | 0:04:35 | 0:04:37
It doesn't make sense to me. | 0:04:37 | 0:04:40
So, social media videos,
a force for good and bad. | 0:04:45 | 0:04:48
In this case, they hope
it will save lives. | 0:04:48 | 0:04:51
Nick Beake, BBC London News. | 0:04:51 | 0:04:53
So just how bad is knife crime
in London at the moment - | 0:04:53 | 0:04:57
and what's behind the rise? | 0:04:57 | 0:04:58
Tolu Adeoye has been investigating. | 0:04:58 | 0:05:04
These are faces of the 16
teenagers stabbed to death | 0:05:05 | 0:05:08
in London this year. | 0:05:08 | 0:05:10
Knife crime has risen by 31%
in the capital in the last year. | 0:05:10 | 0:05:14
It's the biggest increase in the UK. | 0:05:14 | 0:05:17
The latest teenager to be killed
was 17-year-old Michael Jonas. | 0:05:17 | 0:05:19
His father said he'd hoped
to one day to become | 0:05:19 | 0:05:21
a mechanical engineer. | 0:05:21 | 0:05:22
He's warned that anyone | 0:05:22 | 0:05:23
could be a victim. | 0:05:23 | 0:05:27
Presently, right now in the London
area you don't have to be a rude | 0:05:27 | 0:05:36
boy, you don't have to be in a gang,
you don't have to be among certain | 0:05:36 | 0:05:41
people for things to reach you.
People may want to stereotype, | 0:05:41 | 0:05:46
thinking it is only the bad boy
getting stabbed. Innocent kids are | 0:05:46 | 0:05:52
dying. | 0:05:52 | 0:05:54
So why is knife crime rising? | 0:05:54 | 0:05:58
Perhaps surprisingly last year
the Met revealed the overwhelming | 0:05:58 | 0:06:00
majority of young people who carry
knives are not gang members. | 0:06:00 | 0:06:03
Just 20% of stabbings
are linked to them. | 0:06:03 | 0:06:06
St Giles Trust, which works
with attackers and victims, says | 0:06:06 | 0:06:08
there's been a shift in culture
among some young people, | 0:06:08 | 0:06:11
and more resources must be invested
to help turn the tide. | 0:06:11 | 0:06:15
Young people feel in fear so they
are carrying knives, carrying | 0:06:15 | 0:06:23
weapons, there is a glamorisation
happening on social media as well. | 0:06:23 | 0:06:26
Legally there are cutbacks in
services that are important, | 0:06:26 | 0:06:32
grassroots services such as
community centres, organisations | 0:06:32 | 0:06:35
keeping young people safe. | 0:06:35 | 0:06:36
So what about police tactics? | 0:06:36 | 0:06:41
We know the use OF stop and search
was curbed by the former | 0:06:41 | 0:06:44
police commissioner,
Sir Bernard Hogan Howe. | 0:06:44 | 0:06:46
And subsequently knife crime rose. | 0:06:46 | 0:06:50
One expert has told us
and search is an essential | 0:06:50 | 0:06:52
tactic but it must be
used more strategically. | 0:06:52 | 0:06:54
Rather than targeting a lot of very
scared kids, you need those kids on | 0:06:54 | 0:07:00
board to tell you who you ought to
be targeting. Then it is not nearly | 0:07:00 | 0:07:04
as resource intensive. The police
cannot afford to throw resources on | 0:07:04 | 0:07:11
the street to search people, they
need to focus their search | 0:07:11 | 0:07:16
operations on the hard-core of
individuals who are prepared to use | 0:07:16 | 0:07:20
offensive weapons to terrorise and
causes serious damage. | 0:07:20 | 0:07:28
Well the Met say they are using
more stop and search. | 0:07:28 | 0:07:30
And in a more sensitive
and intelligent way, | 0:07:30 | 0:07:32
including carrying out
monthly weapon sweeps. | 0:07:32 | 0:07:34
But they say that they can't and
won't arrest their way out of the | 0:07:34 | 0:07:38
problem. It is proving to be a
bigger societal challenge. | 0:07:38 | 0:07:42
Lots more to come, including. | 0:07:43 | 0:07:49
The fans paying their team's wages -
we'll discuss the future | 0:07:49 | 0:07:51
of non-league club, Dulwich Hamlet. | 0:07:51 | 0:07:58
"If the intention was to intimidate
us, the effect has actually been | 0:07:58 | 0:08:00
to bring us closer together." | 0:08:00 | 0:08:04
That's been the response of MPs BBC
London has spoken to who are among | 0:08:04 | 0:08:07
a group condemned by
a national newspaper this as | 0:08:07 | 0:08:09
"Brexit mutineers". | 0:08:09 | 0:08:10
More than a dozen Tory MPs have
signalled they will vote | 0:08:10 | 0:08:13
against government plans to put
the exact date of Brexit into law. | 0:08:13 | 0:08:16
Our political editor
Tim Donovan has the details. | 0:08:16 | 0:08:18
They woke up this morning
to find their pictures on the front | 0:08:18 | 0:08:22
page of a newspaper,
below a headline | 0:08:22 | 0:08:24
"the Brexit mutineers". | 0:08:24 | 0:08:26
Their leader, according
to the paper, is Dominic Grieve, | 0:08:26 | 0:08:30
former Attorney General
and MP for Beaconsfield. | 0:08:30 | 0:08:33
Alongside him, Oliver Heald,
MP for North East Hertfordshire, | 0:08:33 | 0:08:37
Vicky Ford from Chelmsford,
Bob Neill, MP for Bromley, | 0:08:37 | 0:08:43
and finally Stephen Hammond,
whose seat is Wimbledon. | 0:08:43 | 0:08:44
I thought it was a bit odd really. | 0:08:45 | 0:08:47
I've never voted against
the government before. | 0:08:47 | 0:08:49
But there are a number
of things in this bill | 0:08:49 | 0:08:51
which need to be corrected. | 0:08:51 | 0:08:53
He and the others have been targeted
because they want to block | 0:08:53 | 0:08:56
government plans to write the exact
Brexit leave date into law. | 0:08:56 | 0:08:59
Actually it's illogical to do this. | 0:08:59 | 0:09:01
The government says it wants
a freer hand to negotiate. | 0:09:01 | 0:09:03
By doing this the government
is actually restricting its own | 0:09:03 | 0:09:06
ability to negotiate
with what will be our ex-partners. | 0:09:06 | 0:09:08
Do you feel you're singled out? | 0:09:09 | 0:09:10
Well, I think it's silly. | 0:09:10 | 0:09:11
Some people have
classed it as bullying. | 0:09:11 | 0:09:13
It doesn't worry me
in the slightest. | 0:09:13 | 0:09:18
My job as a member of
Parliament is to represent my | 0:09:18 | 0:09:21
constituents and the country. | 0:09:21 | 0:09:22
I'd be a pretty weak person
if I was worried about the front | 0:09:22 | 0:09:25
page of the Telegraph. | 0:09:25 | 0:09:26
But another of those
accused of mutineering | 0:09:26 | 0:09:28
puts it more strongly. | 0:09:28 | 0:09:31
What I don't like is this attempt
by some parts of the press to bully | 0:09:31 | 0:09:34
and to muzzle dissent,
and that is a serious point. | 0:09:34 | 0:09:38
It's almost as bad as the attack
on the judges after they did | 0:09:38 | 0:09:41
what was simply their constitutional
job in the Article 50 case. | 0:09:41 | 0:09:45
What we are seeking to do is what's
our constitutional job as MPs, | 0:09:45 | 0:09:48
to scrutinise the legislation,
to do it constructively, | 0:09:48 | 0:09:50
and improve it. | 0:09:50 | 0:09:54
But some of their pro-Brexit
colleagues accuse them of wanting | 0:09:54 | 0:09:57
to wriggle out of Brexit. | 0:09:57 | 0:10:00
Absolutely not, I accept
the result of the referendum, | 0:10:00 | 0:10:02
even though I didn't like it. | 0:10:02 | 0:10:03
That's why I voted
to trigger Article 50. | 0:10:03 | 0:10:06
36% of my constituents work
in financial and personal services. | 0:10:06 | 0:10:13
It's important to them
to get it right. | 0:10:13 | 0:10:15
Billions of pounds of tax | 0:10:15 | 0:10:16
revenue comes for our public
services from the financial | 0:10:16 | 0:10:19
services sector. | 0:10:19 | 0:10:20
The last thing they want is any
heightened risk of a cliff edge. | 0:10:20 | 0:10:23
Time after time this isn't
about frustrating Brexit, | 0:10:23 | 0:10:25
we understand what people
voted last year. | 0:10:25 | 0:10:27
What this is about is ensuring this
country gets a good deal. | 0:10:27 | 0:10:31
They won't be put off,
but with feelings running high, | 0:10:31 | 0:10:35
the Speaker of the House of Commons
today warned that MPs should not be | 0:10:35 | 0:10:39
subject to threats for expressing
a political opinion. | 0:10:39 | 0:10:40
Tim Donovan, BBC London News. | 0:10:40 | 0:10:45
Hundred of survivors
of the Grenfell Tower have been | 0:10:45 | 0:10:47
given the right to take part
in its inquiry. | 0:10:47 | 0:10:50
The decision could give almost 400
people and organisations the right | 0:10:50 | 0:10:53
to provide opening statements,
highlight evidence or suggest | 0:10:53 | 0:10:54
lines of questioning. | 0:10:54 | 0:11:01
Meanwhile officials from the inquiry | 0:11:01 | 0:11:05
say they've | 0:11:05 | 0:11:06
yet to finish taking statements
from residents and firefighters. | 0:11:06 | 0:11:08
Plans to build a new Westfield
shopping centre in Croydon | 0:11:08 | 0:11:11
have been approved. | 0:11:11 | 0:11:15
Work will begin on the £1.4
billion project in 2019 - | 0:11:15 | 0:11:21
of 7,000 new jobs and
a thousand new homes. | 0:11:21 | 0:11:23
The complex, which will be the third
Westfield in the capital, | 0:11:23 | 0:11:25
will include the redevelopment
of the Whitgift and Centrale | 0:11:25 | 0:11:28
shopping centres. | 0:11:28 | 0:11:29
There's a warning tonight over
the number of mobile phones stolen | 0:11:29 | 0:11:31
at gigs and festivals. | 0:11:31 | 0:11:32
Last night people took to social
media to report around 80 phones | 0:11:32 | 0:11:35
being taken at one gig alone,
but it seems it's not the only | 0:11:35 | 0:11:36
time it's happened. | 0:11:38 | 0:11:39
Chris Rogers joins me now and can | 0:11:39 | 0:11:43
tell us more - so what
happened last night? | 0:11:43 | 0:11:48
Going by social media, there is a
pattern. 30 phones were taken at a | 0:11:48 | 0:11:54
concert last night and a similar in
Cardiff. A different band and a | 0:11:54 | 0:11:59
different venue on Saturday,
Alexandra Palace, a large number of | 0:11:59 | 0:12:04
phones stolen. We don't know if the
same people behind it but the same | 0:12:04 | 0:12:07
thing happens, people are pushed,
there is a surge forward and they | 0:12:07 | 0:12:12
noticed that their possessions have
gone missing. We've heard from three | 0:12:12 | 0:12:16
viewers, Suzy, Ruby and James, who
were at the concert in Reading last | 0:12:16 | 0:12:23
night. | 0:12:23 | 0:12:29
The surge came like they had intent. | 0:12:29 | 0:12:31
There was one point there was a huge
surge, and the whole crowd, | 0:12:31 | 0:12:34
everyone got crushed forwards. | 0:12:34 | 0:12:35
By the time it waved back
there were a couple of people | 0:12:35 | 0:12:38
looking on the floor,
and we thought someone | 0:12:38 | 0:12:40
has lost their phone. | 0:12:40 | 0:12:41
And then you saw more people
looking on the floor, | 0:12:41 | 0:12:43
and then there was a lot of people
looking around, so we thought | 0:12:43 | 0:12:46
this is a bit strange. | 0:12:46 | 0:12:47
Then we realised the girl next to me
had had a zipped pocket, | 0:12:47 | 0:12:50
a front pocket, phone gone. | 0:12:51 | 0:12:52
The girl next to her had
a button pocket, again | 0:12:52 | 0:12:54
front pocket, again gone. | 0:12:54 | 0:12:55
There was a guy who'd
lost his wallet. | 0:12:55 | 0:12:57
This was all just in the one surge. | 0:12:57 | 0:12:59
Then it started again. | 0:12:59 | 0:13:00
Last night I saw Royal
Blood at Rivermead. | 0:13:00 | 0:13:02
I put both of our phones in my front
pocket, assuming they'd be safe. | 0:13:02 | 0:13:05
Shortly after entering the mosh pit
I felt like I was being grabbed, | 0:13:05 | 0:13:08
and someone took it,
and all I was left | 0:13:08 | 0:13:10
with was a phone case. | 0:13:11 | 0:13:12
I felt really uneasy
in the crowd that night, | 0:13:12 | 0:13:16
and just that last Saturday we went
and saw Don Broco at Ally Pally | 0:13:16 | 0:13:20
in London, and one of my friends
got their front pocket unzipped | 0:13:20 | 0:13:23
and their phone taken out of it. | 0:13:23 | 0:13:24
It's not a very nice thing to do. | 0:13:24 | 0:13:28
A lot of people on social media,
especially Royal Blood fans. Same | 0:13:28 | 0:13:35
released a statement saying they
were dismayed to receive reports of | 0:13:35 | 0:13:38
phones being stolen in Cardiff and
warned fans ahead of the concert in | 0:13:38 | 0:13:43
Reading although there were more
thefts. They are urging fans to be | 0:13:43 | 0:13:46
vigilant and they are working with
the police and promoters to increase | 0:13:46 | 0:13:50
security. Any response from Thames
Valley? Thames Valley Police said | 0:13:50 | 0:13:56
they received 11 reports of thefts
from river made in Reading and a | 0:13:56 | 0:14:01
32-year-old man from London has been
arrested on suspicion of attempted | 0:14:01 | 0:14:04
theft and remains in custody. They
say that the arrest is in Malaysia | 0:14:04 | 0:14:09
and to some of the thefts, not all
of them. -- is in relation. | 0:14:09 | 0:14:14
They've been around since
1893 and are best-known | 0:14:14 | 0:14:16
for their distinctive pink and blue
shirts, but the future of non-League | 0:14:16 | 0:14:19
Dulwich Hamlet football
club appears uncertain. | 0:14:19 | 0:14:21
Fans are being asked to raise money
to help the team following a dispute | 0:14:21 | 0:14:25
between the council and the property
developers who own their stadium. | 0:14:25 | 0:14:27
Chris Slegg reports. | 0:14:27 | 0:14:30
Last night, fans of Dulwich Hamlet
came to give their support | 0:14:30 | 0:14:34
and anything they could afford. | 0:14:34 | 0:14:36
There you go, thank you very much. | 0:14:36 | 0:14:38
Thank you very much. | 0:14:38 | 0:14:40
To help a club caught in a stand-off
between Southwark Council | 0:14:40 | 0:14:43
and property developers,
Meadow Residential. | 0:14:43 | 0:14:44
It's a disgrace. | 0:14:44 | 0:14:51
I think this is a community club
that's very well supported and it | 0:14:51 | 0:14:54
shouldn't have got this far. | 0:14:54 | 0:14:55
I fear for the worst
when there are property | 0:14:55 | 0:14:57
developers involved. | 0:14:57 | 0:14:58
Basically this bit of land
round here is worth a lot | 0:14:58 | 0:15:01
of money in London. | 0:15:01 | 0:15:02
This stadium is owned
by Meadow Residential. | 0:15:02 | 0:15:06
Many fans initially backed
their vision of turning the stadium | 0:15:06 | 0:15:09
into flats because they also had
a vision for the football club. | 0:15:09 | 0:15:15
The 1,500 fans who regularly come
to games here at Champion Hill felt | 0:15:15 | 0:15:22
the future was bright when Meadow
Residential announced plans | 0:15:22 | 0:15:24
to build a brand-new stadium next
door but with the property | 0:15:24 | 0:15:27
developers now unwilling
or unable to continue | 0:15:27 | 0:15:28
funding the football team,
they fear they may soon no longer | 0:15:28 | 0:15:31
have a club to support at all. | 0:15:31 | 0:15:34
Meadow Residential have
stopped funding the club | 0:15:34 | 0:15:37
after Southwark Council went
to court to block their development | 0:15:37 | 0:15:41
plans because of a lack
of affordable housing. | 0:15:41 | 0:15:43
Manager Gavin Rose says he may soon
not have enough money | 0:15:43 | 0:15:46
to pay his semiprofessional players. | 0:15:46 | 0:15:50
We've been told that the club
will be responsible | 0:15:50 | 0:15:52
for finding the wages, etc. | 0:15:53 | 0:15:59
We're working with an organisation
basically telling us | 0:15:59 | 0:16:01
what action we can take, | 0:16:01 | 0:16:02
how much is coming through the door,
without us knowing. | 0:16:02 | 0:16:04
Meadow Residential insists
they are not to blame | 0:16:04 | 0:16:07
for any financial problems,
adding: | 0:16:07 | 0:16:09
The Mayor of
London Sadiq Khan has said | 0:16:24 | 0:16:26
he is deeply concerned
by the club's predicament. | 0:16:26 | 0:16:28
The fans are remaining resolute. | 0:16:28 | 0:16:33
Hopefully there's
a short-term solution. | 0:16:33 | 0:16:34
This sort of thing can only be
short-term but hopefully it | 0:16:34 | 0:16:37
will keep the club going long enough
to find a long-term | 0:16:37 | 0:16:39
answer to the problems. | 0:16:39 | 0:16:41
The hope now is that somehow
a deal can be struck. | 0:16:41 | 0:16:47
Still to come tonight. | 0:16:47 | 0:16:49
Transforming young
lives through sailing. | 0:16:49 | 0:16:51
How Children In Need is helping
charities like this one. | 0:16:51 | 0:16:59
The number of homes for sale
with reduced asking prices | 0:17:01 | 0:17:03
is at its highest level in five
years - with nearly half | 0:17:03 | 0:17:06
of sellers dropping the price
by an average of 7%. | 0:17:06 | 0:17:09
It might be a good time
for buyers to secure a deal | 0:17:09 | 0:17:12
in the run-up to Christmas -
but when you need £64,000 | 0:17:12 | 0:17:15
for an average London deposit,
what can young couples do to get | 0:17:15 | 0:17:18
themselves on the property ladder? | 0:17:18 | 0:17:19
Marc Ashdown can tell us more. | 0:17:19 | 0:17:24
As sure as the leaves fall,
in Autumn house prices follow. | 0:17:24 | 0:17:27
Is this the property they're
thinking of reducing? | 0:17:27 | 0:17:30
That's the one, yeah. | 0:17:30 | 0:17:31
But this year has seen
the highest number of owners | 0:17:31 | 0:17:34
reducing their asking
price since 2012. | 0:17:34 | 0:17:37
I think a combination perhaps
of a bit of uncertainty, | 0:17:37 | 0:17:40
perhaps Brexit talks,
interest rates going up, | 0:17:40 | 0:17:41
people thinking are they going to go
up a lot higher and by how much, | 0:17:41 | 0:17:45
can I still afford it. | 0:17:45 | 0:17:49
Plus the time of year as well. | 0:17:49 | 0:17:51
Those are the main factors, I think. | 0:17:51 | 0:17:53
For many in Generation Rent,
there is a long way to go to even | 0:17:53 | 0:17:56
get on the housing ladder. | 0:17:56 | 0:17:57
Agents Strutt and Parker have
published a few self-help | 0:17:57 | 0:17:59
suggestions, or sacrifices. | 0:17:59 | 0:18:04
If you ditched one night out a week
you could save £6,000 a year. | 0:18:04 | 0:18:10
But if you are staying home,
don't get a takeaway. | 0:18:10 | 0:18:15
That could save you £2600 a year. | 0:18:15 | 0:18:20
Stop buying food on the go. | 0:18:20 | 0:18:22
Binning the shop-bought lunch
could save you £2500 every year. | 0:18:22 | 0:18:24
Stop upgrading your phone every
year, that's another £154 saved. | 0:18:24 | 0:18:34
Stop playing the lottery
every week, £832 saved. | 0:18:37 | 0:18:42
And finally, if you're
thinking about jetting off | 0:18:42 | 0:18:44
for a summer or winter break,
don't, and that'll | 0:18:44 | 0:18:46
save you another £700. | 0:18:46 | 0:18:51
In just five years a couple
could save up a staggering £64,000, | 0:18:51 | 0:18:55
the average needed for a deposit
in the capital. | 0:18:55 | 0:18:58
I fear that a lot of the time
we just get into these habits | 0:18:58 | 0:19:02
of spending money because it gets us
through, and we see other | 0:19:02 | 0:19:05
people doing it, and it
becomes very normalised. | 0:19:05 | 0:19:07
But actually, if we do a review
of our finances right | 0:19:07 | 0:19:10
across the board and actually
question where the money is going, | 0:19:10 | 0:19:13
and it can be in big areas
as well as in small areas, | 0:19:13 | 0:19:16
then you can feel that
much more empowered. | 0:19:16 | 0:19:18
In six months' time,
with the green shoots of spring, | 0:19:18 | 0:19:21
prices usually pick up. | 0:19:21 | 0:19:22
By then a couple could have said
goodbye to a life of fun, | 0:19:22 | 0:19:25
and hello to six grand in the bank
towards their dream home. | 0:19:25 | 0:19:29
Mark Ashdown, BBC London News. | 0:19:29 | 0:19:34
Not long to go before
Children In Need. | 0:19:34 | 0:19:36
Pudsey's excited. | 0:19:36 | 0:19:37
The big day is this Friday. | 0:19:37 | 0:19:39
Last year, millions
of pounds were raised. | 0:19:39 | 0:19:40
Which helped many charities right
here in the capital. | 0:19:40 | 0:19:43
Among them, the Ahoy
Centre in south London. | 0:19:43 | 0:19:46
Now it works with disadvantaged
young people teaching them life | 0:19:46 | 0:19:49
skills through sailing
on the Thames. | 0:19:49 | 0:19:54
All holding on? | 0:19:54 | 0:19:55
Yes. | 0:19:55 | 0:19:56 | |
Three, two, one, nice and gently. | 0:19:56 | 0:19:58
One of the mottos we have
at the Ahoy is, whatever | 0:19:58 | 0:20:00
is on the outside, whether that's
family pressures, or stuff | 0:20:00 | 0:20:03
with schooling, or anything
like that, we leave that | 0:20:03 | 0:20:05
at the door. | 0:20:05 | 0:20:07
You come in, we're here to sail
and have fun and learn. | 0:20:07 | 0:20:10
My name is Zak, I'm a senior
instructor at the Ahoy Centre. | 0:20:10 | 0:20:13
I first came here
when I was about 12-13. | 0:20:13 | 0:20:17
And now I run the
apprenticeship programme. | 0:20:17 | 0:20:19
A lot of the people who come here,
myself included, didn't do | 0:20:19 | 0:20:22
amazingly well at school. | 0:20:22 | 0:20:25
I've got dyslexia. | 0:20:25 | 0:20:26
But when it comes to the more
practical side, I feel | 0:20:26 | 0:20:29
I excel a lot better. | 0:20:29 | 0:20:30
The water's not at its cleanest
right now, so we're not going to be | 0:20:30 | 0:20:34
going on the water unfortunately. | 0:20:34 | 0:20:37
But there's still lots of fun stuff
to do on land, isn't there? | 0:20:37 | 0:20:40
Yeah! | 0:20:40 | 0:20:41 | |
We are based on the border
of Deptford and Greenwich, | 0:20:41 | 0:20:43
so there are some families that
might be a bit more | 0:20:43 | 0:20:46
disadvantaged than others. | 0:20:46 | 0:20:47
So that is partly
the people we take in. | 0:20:47 | 0:20:51
We also take in people
with learning difficulties. | 0:20:51 | 0:20:53
Our main demographic
is 8-12-year-olds right now. | 0:20:53 | 0:20:56
Hi there, my name is Emmanuella. | 0:20:56 | 0:20:58
We go sailing, and I like coming
here because I get to learn new fun | 0:20:58 | 0:21:02
stuff with my best friend Esther. | 0:21:02 | 0:21:07
My name is Esther, I just finished
my three-week stage one course, | 0:21:07 | 0:21:14
and happily I passed. | 0:21:14 | 0:21:17
When I'm on the water
I feel like I can be free, | 0:21:17 | 0:21:20
I don't worry about anything. | 0:21:20 | 0:21:23
ALL TOGETHER: Ready! | 0:21:23 | 0:21:25
Sometimes it's just good to go
places and not always be at home. | 0:21:25 | 0:21:31
The money that has been raised goes
towards helping young people | 0:21:31 | 0:21:34
either find a hobby,
or find something | 0:21:34 | 0:21:36
they wish to continue. | 0:21:36 | 0:21:38
For these kids, not only
are they learning new skills, | 0:21:38 | 0:21:41
but they're also socialising. | 0:21:41 | 0:21:42
So they develop friends
they never would have had. | 0:21:42 | 0:21:44
Lovely stuff. | 0:21:44 | 0:21:47
So that is just one example of where
your Children In Need money goes. | 0:21:50 | 0:21:53
Remember, you can join
us on the big night, | 0:21:53 | 0:21:55
this Friday, November the 17th. | 0:21:55 | 0:21:56
Pudsey will be there too, of course, | 0:21:56 | 0:21:58
at Warner Brothers Studio
Tours in Hertfordshire, | 0:21:58 | 0:22:00
along with some very special guests. | 0:22:00 | 0:22:01
You can be there too -
just tell us what you're | 0:22:01 | 0:22:04
doing to raise money. | 0:22:04 | 0:22:05
Details of how to get
in touch are on your screen. | 0:22:05 | 0:22:10
And now a story which started life
as a documentary and ended up | 0:22:11 | 0:22:14
as a West End musical. | 0:22:14 | 0:22:16
Everybody's Talking About Jamie
follows the life of a gay teenager | 0:22:16 | 0:22:19
growing up in an ex-mining town,
who decided he wanted to wear | 0:22:19 | 0:22:22
a dress to his high school prom. | 0:22:22 | 0:22:24
He had the full support
of his mother, but not | 0:22:24 | 0:22:26
everyone was so accepting. | 0:22:26 | 0:22:29
Wendy Hurrell has been speaking
to him, his mum and the actor | 0:22:29 | 0:22:31
who plays him at the Apollo Theatre. | 0:22:32 | 0:22:40
No haters please, no haters. | 0:22:40 | 0:22:44
High school prom was the most
spectacular occasion Jamie | 0:22:44 | 0:22:47
could think of to reveal his drag
queen alter ego, Fifi La True. | 0:22:47 | 0:22:50
Close friends were supportive. | 0:22:50 | 0:22:51
I'd give him a dance. | 0:22:51 | 0:22:52
But he faced prejudice. | 0:22:52 | 0:22:53
There was one particularly strong
comment from a parent | 0:22:53 | 0:22:55
to the teachers, who initially
barred him from the party. | 0:22:55 | 0:22:58
I know there's a lot
of insults you can get, | 0:22:58 | 0:23:00
but the word "disgusting" to me hurt
the most that you could ever say. | 0:23:00 | 0:23:03
But the reaction that
I got from my peers, | 0:23:03 | 0:23:06
even the people who I wasn't really
friends with, came out | 0:23:06 | 0:23:10
of the prom and said
if you don't let Jamie in, | 0:23:10 | 0:23:12
we're not going in. | 0:23:12 | 0:23:13
It was amazing. | 0:23:13 | 0:23:19
Fairy tale fodder for a musical. | 0:23:19 | 0:23:22
Everybody's Talking About Jamie has
travelled south from Sheffield | 0:23:22 | 0:23:24
to the West End in London. | 0:23:24 | 0:23:27
The front man of band
The Feeling wrote the music. | 0:23:27 | 0:23:31
It's the story about a mum
and her son, and how | 0:23:31 | 0:23:33
they support each other and get
on with each other. | 0:23:33 | 0:23:36
It's about being 16,
getting to that age and trying | 0:23:36 | 0:23:38
to figure out what kind of grown up
you're going to be. | 0:23:38 | 0:23:43
It's our life, and to see it
being played out there | 0:23:43 | 0:23:45
is like being in a tumble dryer,
to be honest! | 0:23:45 | 0:23:49
They say it's been surreal to see
themselves on stage. | 0:23:49 | 0:23:54
Odd too, for to the actors. | 0:23:54 | 0:23:55
Every actor dreams of playing a real
person at some point, | 0:23:55 | 0:23:58
but you always assumed it'd be some
sort of historical | 0:23:58 | 0:24:00
figure who's long gone. | 0:24:00 | 0:24:01
Not someone who's very
close to you in age | 0:24:01 | 0:24:03
and who lives around
the corner from you! | 0:24:03 | 0:24:05
LAUGHTER. | 0:24:05 | 0:24:06
He lives in the same
area of London as me. | 0:24:06 | 0:24:09
That's strange, but he seems
to be enjoying it so far, | 0:24:09 | 0:24:11
and I think he's quite happy
with what I'm doing, so whew! | 0:24:11 | 0:24:14
Jamie's tale was first told
on TV six years ago. | 0:24:14 | 0:24:18
Progress has since been made. | 0:24:18 | 0:24:19
The Church of England has offered
guidance to its schools that | 0:24:19 | 0:24:22
children should be able to choose
whatever they like from | 0:24:22 | 0:24:24
the dressing up box,
without being bullied or labelled. | 0:24:24 | 0:24:29
You should be able to be yourself,
you shouldn't be put in a box. | 0:24:29 | 0:24:32
Sometimes you're just outside that
box, and that's fine. | 0:24:32 | 0:24:36
And who made the box anyway? | 0:24:36 | 0:24:38
Exactly! | 0:24:38 | 0:24:39
LAUGHTER. | 0:24:39 | 0:24:40
Smash the box up! | 0:24:40 | 0:24:41
Smash it up and throw it away. | 0:24:41 | 0:24:42
Wendy Hurrell, BBC London News. | 0:24:42 | 0:24:47
Now let's check on the weather
with Tomasz Schafernaker. | 0:24:47 | 0:24:54
It's quite mild today actually for
winter. Mild but the sky wasn't | 0:24:54 | 0:25:00
pretty. It was drizzly, dull,
gloomy, horrible. | 0:25:00 | 0:25:03
pretty. It was drizzly, dull,
gloomy, horrible. We'll have none of | 0:25:03 | 0:25:05
that and tomorrow we are in for a
much better day. We're going to get | 0:25:05 | 0:25:09
rid of the gloom. It's still going
to hang around through this evening | 0:25:09 | 0:25:13
and overnight but eventually over
the next couple of days the weather | 0:25:13 | 0:25:16
is going to get a bit better. Today
it was a layer of grey, it was | 0:25:16 | 0:25:22
really rubbish. 12 degrees today we
managed so relatively mild. Here's | 0:25:22 | 0:25:29
the groom through this evening and
tonight and here is your blobs of | 0:25:29 | 0:25:33
drizzle moving through the capital.
Temperatures around nine, 10 | 0:25:33 | 0:25:37
degrees. Not a lot of difference
this time of year in the temperature | 0:25:37 | 0:25:42
between the day and the night.
Tomorrow you could already see | 0:25:42 | 0:25:48
sunshine. That's because the breeze
is picking up. They are breaking up | 0:25:48 | 0:25:53
a bit but sometime during the
afternoon we could see a spot of | 0:25:53 | 0:25:56
frame. Those temperatures might get
up to 14 degrees -- spot of rain. | 0:25:56 | 0:26:04
And then, as we head towards the end
of the week, we could be in for some | 0:26:04 | 0:26:09
frost. Those temperatures will be
dipping away. After a frosty start | 0:26:09 | 0:26:13
on Friday we've got a beautiful end
to the week on the way. Gorgeous | 0:26:13 | 0:26:18
sparkling sunshine out there. White
winds as well. Double figure | 0:26:18 | 0:26:24
temperatures for most of us. That
means after a clear and sunny day on | 0:26:24 | 0:26:32
Friday, Friday night the stars are
out, beautiful weather, overnight, | 0:26:32 | 0:26:38
but that means Saturday morning is
going to be on the net he I'd. | 0:26:38 | 0:26:42
Here's the click into Sunday. --
Saturday morning is going to be on | 0:26:42 | 0:26:50
the nippy side. After today it's
looking better. | 0:26:50 | 0:26:54
Let's get a reminder
of tonight's main stories. | 0:26:55 | 0:26:57
