Coming up on BBC London News...
so it's goodbye from me - | 0:00:09 | 0:00:12
One of the capital's major hospital
trusts is placed in special | 0:00:12 | 0:00:15
measures as another row breaks out
over NHS funding in the capital. | 0:00:15 | 0:00:21
There's a real risk here that the
NHS we know and love will slip away | 0:00:21 | 0:00:27
from us. His NHS Trust was the worst
financially managed NHS Trust in the | 0:00:27 | 0:00:32
country, on the cusp of being put on
special measures so this is a case | 0:00:32 | 0:00:39
of jumping before he got pushed. | 0:00:39 | 0:00:44
Also ahead tonight... | 0:00:44 | 0:00:49
Could we see a repeat
of this tomorrow? | 0:00:49 | 0:00:53
Hundreds of schools are closed
with freezing conditions | 0:00:53 | 0:00:55
expected overnight. | 0:00:55 | 0:00:57

London becomes the first area
to offer people extended | 0:00:59 | 0:01:01
hours for GP services. | 0:01:01 | 0:01:02
And... | 0:01:02 | 0:01:08
Your Majesty... Mr Churchill. | 0:01:08 | 0:01:13
As Gary Oldman
takes on the role of Britain's most | 0:01:13 | 0:01:15
famous Prime Minister. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:16
We visit the tailors
who dressed Churchill | 0:01:16 | 0:01:18
as well as the lead actors
in the film. | 0:01:18 | 0:01:20
We were waiting to see Gary just to
make sure everything was OK. Then a | 0:01:20 | 0:01:25
voice behind me said, "Hello, Mr
Parker" and he had the prosthetics | 0:01:25 | 0:01:33
on. And of course it wasn't Gary at
all, it was Churchill. | 0:01:33 | 0:01:40
Good evening, and
welcome to the programme. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:46
First tonight, the
government has stepped | 0:01:46 | 0:01:49
in to help manage one of London's
biggest hospital trusts | 0:01:49 | 0:01:51
after serious concerns
about its finances. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:53
Today, it was announced that
Kings College hospitals | 0:01:53 | 0:01:55
Trust was being put
into "special measures". | 0:01:55 | 0:01:57
It came not long after the trust
chairman, Lord Kerslake - | 0:01:57 | 0:02:00
former head of the civil service -
resigned saying he wasn't | 0:02:00 | 0:02:02
prepared to make more cuts. | 0:02:02 | 0:02:04
It came not long after the trust
chairman, Lord Kerslake - | 0:02:04 | 0:02:07
Our Political Editor,
Tim Donovan, reports. | 0:02:07 | 0:02:12
This hospital trust has been
struggling financially ever since | 0:02:12 | 0:02:15
the merger with the Princess Royal
four years ago. This year it is said | 0:02:15 | 0:02:20
to overspend its target budget by
£92 million, which is why the NHS | 0:02:20 | 0:02:26
regulator has just stepped in.
Pre-empting that, getting his | 0:02:26 | 0:02:31
retaliation in first some would say
was the trust chairman, who | 0:02:31 | 0:02:34
announced he was off. We have saved
in each of the last two years, £80 | 0:02:34 | 0:02:41
million, twice the national average.
The challenges of rising demand, | 0:02:41 | 0:02:44
rising gusts and an expectation to
bring that deficit down even faster | 0:02:44 | 0:02:50
I think have proved very difficult
and this year has been particularly | 0:02:50 | 0:02:54
challenging. But if he says further
cuts were unsustainable, the health | 0:02:54 | 0:02:59
service regulator doesn't agree. At
the hospital today there was support | 0:02:59 | 0:03:03
for both views. Apparently he has
reduced the deficit but not the | 0:03:03 | 0:03:08
target. Do you think he could have
made more savings? Without affecting | 0:03:08 | 0:03:14
care, well, actually, I think he
probably could by going for the | 0:03:14 | 0:03:20
bureaucrats. It needed more staff,
more money spent on it, more beds | 0:03:20 | 0:03:26
because the pressure on a day-to-day
basis is quite heavy. I think we | 0:03:26 | 0:03:31
should all dig into our pockets and
provide more for the NHS. It is | 0:03:31 | 0:03:37
clear the regulator NHS improvement
has been concern to some time about | 0:03:37 | 0:03:42
the trust's financial planning. Its
former head recently warned they | 0:03:42 | 0:03:46
haven't hit a single number they
have put to us in the two years I | 0:03:46 | 0:03:52
have been involved. Today the
patience ran out, with the new chief | 0:03:52 | 0:03:57
executive saying the financial
situation has deteriorated seriously | 0:03:57 | 0:04:03
over recent months and we have now
placed the trust in special | 0:04:03 | 0:04:07
measures. NHS improvements found
Lord Kerslake's trust was the worst | 0:04:07 | 0:04:13
performing in the country on
financial grounds and that's why I | 0:04:13 | 0:04:16
think he effectively got pushed out.
I know it was structured as a | 0:04:16 | 0:04:20
resignation but I think he jumped
before he was pushed. Putting it in | 0:04:20 | 0:04:25
special measures is intended to
achieve a swift turnaround of its | 0:04:25 | 0:04:30
financial fortunes but it's getting
close to the most difficult time of | 0:04:30 | 0:04:33
the year. The potential challenge of
bed crisis. | 0:04:33 | 0:04:37
And if you want to see how the NHS
Trust in your area is | 0:04:37 | 0:04:40
performing, go to the BBC
News website and search | 0:04:40 | 0:04:42
for "NHS Tracker". | 0:04:42 | 0:04:43
Then just type in your postcode. | 0:04:43 | 0:04:47
Plenty more ahead
tonight, including... | 0:04:47 | 0:04:55
If you're thinking about travelling
to Waterloo this evening, massive | 0:04:55 | 0:05:00
delays and cancellations are
continuing and it is nothing to do | 0:05:00 | 0:05:03
with the weather! | 0:05:03 | 0:05:08
Hundreds of schools were closed
across Hertfordshire and north | 0:05:08 | 0:05:10
London today as the parts
of the capital struggled to deal | 0:05:10 | 0:05:13
with the wintry conditions. | 0:05:13 | 0:05:15
Whilst many children were very
happy building snowmen | 0:05:15 | 0:05:18
and sledging, parents have had
to find alternative arrangements. | 0:05:18 | 0:05:22
Something they may have to do
all over again tomorrow | 0:05:22 | 0:05:24
if schools are closed again. | 0:05:24 | 0:05:25
Here's Thomas Magill. | 0:05:25 | 0:05:29
Making the most of an unexpected day
off school in Hertfordshire. | 0:05:29 | 0:05:32
Got up late. | 0:05:32 | 0:05:37
I'm guessing you did as well. | 0:05:37 | 0:05:40
And then just come out here,
just having fun in the snow. | 0:05:40 | 0:05:43
Enjoying it. | 0:05:43 | 0:05:44
It doesn't come around very
often, so might as well | 0:05:44 | 0:05:46
make the most of it. | 0:05:46 | 0:05:48
Yesterday's snow caused widespread
disruption for many on the roads, | 0:05:48 | 0:05:51
on public transport,
and at Heathrow, where today over | 0:05:51 | 0:05:53
200 flights have been cancelled
as the airport struggled to get | 0:05:53 | 0:05:55
back to normal. | 0:05:55 | 0:06:04
And as the big thaw began,
there was more disruption, | 0:06:04 | 0:06:10
as hundreds of schools
in the northern home counties | 0:06:10 | 0:06:15
and North London took the decision
yesterday not to open. | 0:06:15 | 0:06:17
as hundreds of schools
in the northern home counties | 0:06:17 | 0:06:23
and North London took the decision
yesterday not to open. | 0:06:23 | 0:06:25
I work, so it's been very difficult,
because I've been trying to work | 0:06:25 | 0:06:28
from home while having two children
who mostly have been bribed | 0:06:28 | 0:06:31
to stay still and quiet. | 0:06:31 | 0:06:32
It's a massive inconvenience,
but luckily for us, | 0:06:32 | 0:06:34
it wasn't too bad. | 0:06:34 | 0:06:35
I was able to swap the days. | 0:06:35 | 0:06:37
And you guys have got
a day off, haven't you? | 0:06:37 | 0:06:39
How does that make you feel? | 0:06:39 | 0:06:41
Are you happy to be off with Daddy? | 0:06:41 | 0:06:43
Yes. | 0:06:43 | 0:06:44 | |
North London and the Northern Home
Counties have been worst affected | 0:06:44 | 0:06:46
by the poor weather this weekend. | 0:06:46 | 0:06:48
In Hertfordshire, around 300 schools
haven't opened today. | 0:06:48 | 0:06:50
In Buckinghamshire, 261
decided to stay closed, | 0:06:50 | 0:06:51
and in Essex, around 65. | 0:06:51 | 0:06:53
In north London, over 100 schools
have told students there they too | 0:06:53 | 0:06:55
could have the day off due
to the bad weather. | 0:06:55 | 0:06:59
Harpenden was just one of the towns
that saw the heaviest | 0:06:59 | 0:07:01
snow over the weekend. | 0:07:01 | 0:07:06
And today, all of the town's
schools are closed. | 0:07:06 | 0:07:09
It's a really tricky decision. | 0:07:09 | 0:07:11
We really appreciate that
there's lots of our parents | 0:07:11 | 0:07:14
who are working parents,
for whom, if their children | 0:07:14 | 0:07:16
are at home unexpectedly,
it's hard to organise and make those | 0:07:16 | 0:07:18
necessary arrangements,
but it's really important for us | 0:07:18 | 0:07:20
to make sure that everybody's safe,
the access is clear, the site | 0:07:20 | 0:07:23
is safe for everybody to use. | 0:07:23 | 0:07:27
Back in the park,
and no one was complaining | 0:07:27 | 0:07:29
about the extra day off. | 0:07:29 | 0:07:33
Based on how the weather
was yesterday and the forecast | 0:07:33 | 0:07:35
overnight, I think it was a fairly
sensible decision, because there's | 0:07:35 | 0:07:38
no way this morning I would
want to get the car out. | 0:07:38 | 0:07:43
It's been good, actually. | 0:07:43 | 0:07:44
I've really enjoyed it. | 0:07:44 | 0:07:45
It's been an extra day,
a bit of fun, the kids have | 0:07:45 | 0:07:48
loved it, and a good
wind down, actually. | 0:07:48 | 0:07:50
But back to work tomorrow. | 0:07:50 | 0:07:52
That could be wishful thinking,
as temperatures are expected | 0:07:52 | 0:07:54
to nosedive for a second night,
causing widespread frost and more | 0:07:54 | 0:07:56
treacherous driving conditions. | 0:07:56 | 0:08:00
Thomas Magill, BBC London News. | 0:08:00 | 0:08:05
And you can of course keep
across how the weather might | 0:08:05 | 0:08:15
affect where you live -
by tuning in to your | 0:08:15 | 0:08:21
local radio station. | 0:08:21 | 0:08:23
Meanwhile, there's been major
disruption at Waterloo station | 0:08:23 | 0:08:25
for most of the day due
to a track-side fire. | 0:08:25 | 0:08:27
Network Rail says to expect
short-notice delays | 0:08:27 | 0:08:29
and cancellations until the end
of the day. | 0:08:29 | 0:08:31
Let's the latest from
Marc Ashdown, | 0:08:31 | 0:08:32
who's at Waterloo for us now. | 0:08:32 | 0:08:33
I have been doing these disruption
stories for a long time and I have | 0:08:38 | 0:08:42
never seen anything like this. It
has thinned out now, that's because | 0:08:42 | 0:08:47
they have closed Waterloo station so
there are not only people here on | 0:08:47 | 0:08:52
the concourse and platforms but
hundreds of people outside wondering | 0:08:52 | 0:08:54
if they can get home this evening. I
can tell you what happened, there | 0:08:54 | 0:08:59
was a track-side fire this evening
which we believe was caused by a 650 | 0:08:59 | 0:09:05
volt cable which came into contact
with three tracks. To compound that, | 0:09:05 | 0:09:15
train down outside Guildford today
which blocked the line for a time, | 0:09:15 | 0:09:18
so three tracks have been out of
action all day causing delays. All | 0:09:18 | 0:09:22
south Western trains have been
subject to delays, cancellations and | 0:09:22 | 0:09:25
alterations all day long and it
looks like it will continue into the | 0:09:25 | 0:09:30
evening. That's clearly people
already in the station but what are | 0:09:30 | 0:09:33
you hearing in terms of advice for
people travelling today and | 0:09:33 | 0:09:37
tomorrow? The usual really. Check
before you travel if at all | 0:09:37 | 0:09:43
possible. Don't just come to
Waterloo expecting to have a train. | 0:09:43 | 0:09:48
I have information on the services
not running at the moment. | 0:09:48 | 0:09:55
Trains between here
and Dorking will be cancelled. | 0:09:55 | 0:09:56
Trains to Hampton Court
will also be cancelled. | 0:09:56 | 0:09:58
Two Circular trains
to and from Waterloo via Teddington | 0:09:58 | 0:10:01
and Strawberry Hill will be
cancelled. | 0:10:01 | 0:10:02
Three trains between here
and Guildford will also | 0:10:02 | 0:10:04
call at New Malden and Raynes Park. | 0:10:04 | 0:10:06
All West of England
services will start | 0:10:06 | 0:10:07
and terminate at Basingstoke. | 0:10:07 | 0:10:13
Network Rail says it's investigating
what caused this fire and its | 0:10:13 | 0:10:17
engineers are working as hard as
possible to get things moving. We | 0:10:17 | 0:10:21
are seeing a few trains limping out
of here but expect the delays to | 0:10:21 | 0:10:25
continue into the evening. For the
time being at least, Waterloo | 0:10:25 | 0:10:30
station is closed so check before
come here. | 0:10:30 | 0:10:33
Being able to see your GP
in the evenings and at weekends | 0:10:33 | 0:10:36
should be easier, as thousands
more appointments have been | 0:10:36 | 0:10:38
made available outside
normal working hours. | 0:10:38 | 0:10:40
London's the first part
of the country to offer all patients | 0:10:40 | 0:10:42
extended access to GP services,
meaning you'll be able | 0:10:42 | 0:10:44
to see your doctor on a Sunday
and even Bank Holidays. | 0:10:44 | 0:10:47
Victoria Hollins reports
from a surgery in Stratford. | 0:10:47 | 0:10:57
There are 13,000 patients registered
at the Liberty Road practice in east | 0:10:59 | 0:11:03
Stratford and demand is growing fast
so they are now open at least 12 | 0:11:03 | 0:11:08
hours every week day and Saturday
and Sunday mornings. I'm a teacher | 0:11:08 | 0:11:13
so early morning and late evenings
is a much better option, and knowing | 0:11:13 | 0:11:17
I can come first thing in the
morning with the baby and after work | 0:11:17 | 0:11:22
is great for me. They give you an
option to choose, you want morning, | 0:11:22 | 0:11:28
evening or later on which is really
very good. It makes your life that | 0:11:28 | 0:11:34
little bit easier. Definitely.
London becomes the first place in | 0:11:34 | 0:11:39
the country to offer extended hours
to all registered patients. The | 0:11:39 | 0:11:46
extended hours won't be available at
every GP practice, but within a | 0:11:46 | 0:11:50
group of practices so you might not
get to see your own GP and you may | 0:11:50 | 0:11:54
have to travel further but this is
all about GPs working in | 0:11:54 | 0:11:59
collaboration. Appointments are
arranged through your own GP | 0:11:59 | 0:12:03
practice or the 111 service. Extra
funding has been provided as part of | 0:12:03 | 0:12:09
a review. It's hoped it will help
patients but also relieve pressure | 0:12:09 | 0:12:13
on other parts of the NHS including
A&E. We are trying to think about | 0:12:13 | 0:12:21
how we create extra support for
people to help them stay well | 0:12:21 | 0:12:24
through the winter, access GPs more
effectively and make sure we release | 0:12:24 | 0:12:28
some of the pressure our A&E
departments are feeling across | 0:12:28 | 0:12:32
London. There is more money for GPs
if we can find them but we are short | 0:12:32 | 0:12:38
of GPs in England at the moment.
Some stuffing these posts may be a | 0:12:38 | 0:12:44
concern, however so far the signs
are looking good. Research had | 0:12:44 | 0:12:49
previously suggested weekend
appointments are not popular and | 0:12:49 | 0:12:53
remain unfilled. In the Stratford
practice though they are well used | 0:12:53 | 0:12:56
and the GPs are noticing benefits
across the service. Our triage gets | 0:12:56 | 0:13:04
filled up so quickly and at that
point you are struggling to tell a | 0:13:04 | 0:13:09
patient, OK we will have to book you
for a few days' time. Now they can | 0:13:09 | 0:13:14
be seen the same day when they know
it needs addressing. The real test | 0:13:14 | 0:13:18
for the system will be over the
winter months. Demand continues to | 0:13:18 | 0:13:23
grow. | 0:13:23 | 0:13:24 | |
The Foreign Secretary has
said it's too early to be confident | 0:13:24 | 0:13:27
that his recent visit to Iran might
secure the release of a mother | 0:13:27 | 0:13:30
from Hampstead, who's been held
in prison there since last April. | 0:13:30 | 0:13:32
Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe
was arrested after being accused | 0:13:32 | 0:13:34
of spying in the country -
a claim she's always denied. | 0:13:34 | 0:13:37
Boris Johnson met with political
leaders in Iran over the weekend. | 0:13:37 | 0:13:44
He said while his meetings
were worthwhile, he did "not wish | 0:13:44 | 0:13:46
to raise false hopes". | 0:13:46 | 0:13:48
Almost six months
on from the Grenfell fire, | 0:13:48 | 0:13:50
survivors have been told at a public
inquiry that great importance | 0:13:50 | 0:13:53
will be placed on their stories. | 0:13:53 | 0:13:54
Meanwhile, amid ongoing criticism
over its handling of the disaster, | 0:13:54 | 0:13:57
the leader of Kensington
and Chelsea Council told | 0:13:57 | 0:13:59
the BBC's Victoria Derbyshire
that she was sorry some families | 0:13:59 | 0:14:01
will still be in temporary
accommodation this Christmas. | 0:14:01 | 0:14:09
We have 250 who we've exchanged on,
but remember buying your own house, | 0:14:09 | 0:14:12
all the things you have to do,
and double it because we're | 0:14:12 | 0:14:16
doing it as a council. | 0:14:16 | 0:14:19
All those things take time,
but we've been buying at a rate | 0:14:19 | 0:14:22
of roughly two a day. | 0:14:22 | 0:14:25
And you said - you told us
in October that you hoped | 0:14:25 | 0:14:27
you would have bought 300
new homes by Christmas. | 0:14:27 | 0:14:31
We're almost there. | 0:14:31 | 0:14:32
We've excahnged on 250,
so we've got 50 more | 0:14:32 | 0:14:35
to exchange before Christmas. | 0:14:35 | 0:14:38
But, in total, under offer,
we've had 370, so we're | 0:14:38 | 0:14:41
moving in that direction. | 0:14:41 | 0:14:48
Would you say sorry to those
who are going to be | 0:14:48 | 0:14:50
in hotels over Christmas? | 0:14:50 | 0:14:51
Yeah, I am sorry. | 0:14:51 | 0:14:52
I'm sorry that they're in hotels,
but I'm also sorry that... | 0:14:52 | 0:14:55
It's one of those things, isn't it? | 0:14:55 | 0:14:58
That they don't feel that they trust
us enough they can move somewhere | 0:14:58 | 0:15:01
that they might feel more
comfortable before they make | 0:15:01 | 0:15:03
the final decision. | 0:15:04 | 0:15:05
Yes, of course I'm sorry. | 0:15:05 | 0:15:07
That's lack of trust, and that takes
time to build up again. | 0:15:07 | 0:15:10
I don't think I have
a magic answer to that. | 0:15:10 | 0:15:20
That was the leader of Kensington
and Chelsea Council talking to the | 0:15:21 | 0:15:25
BBC. Still to come this Monday
evening. The Sabor Road workshop | 0:15:25 | 0:15:31
that tailored Winston Churchill's
famous suits, and still makes them | 0:15:31 | 0:15:35
today.
And coming up, all the latest | 0:15:35 | 0:15:38
details on just how cold tonight is
going to be, and whether tomorrow is | 0:15:38 | 0:15:42
going to be an improvement on today. | 0:15:42 | 0:15:47
From next year, organisations
who accidentally leak personal | 0:15:47 | 0:15:49
details could be fined tens
of millions of pounds because of | 0:15:49 | 0:15:52
changes to data protection rules. | 0:15:52 | 0:15:54
Islington Council was one
of the worst offenders under | 0:15:54 | 0:15:57
the old regime after mistakenly
publishing thousands | 0:15:57 | 0:16:00
of confidential files. | 0:16:00 | 0:16:02
So is the local authority
ready for the new rules? | 0:16:02 | 0:16:05
Sarah Harris has been finding out. | 0:16:05 | 0:16:08
Across the internet,
millions of people's details, | 0:16:08 | 0:16:11
bank account numbers
and personal histories. | 0:16:11 | 0:16:15
Carol Crawley knows first-hand
the real-life devastation that can | 0:16:15 | 0:16:18
be caused when those
details are leaked. | 0:16:18 | 0:16:21
She lives on the Andover estate,
Finsbury Park, where sensitive | 0:16:21 | 0:16:25
details of dozens of residents
were published online. | 0:16:25 | 0:16:29
Six of her neighbours had to be
rehoused for their own safety. | 0:16:29 | 0:16:33
She no longer trusts giving
personal information online. | 0:16:33 | 0:16:38
No, not after it has happened twice,
if they can do it twice, | 0:16:38 | 0:16:41
they can do it quite
a few more times! | 0:16:41 | 0:16:43
If you think about it. | 0:16:43 | 0:16:45
Are you now careful
what you disclose? | 0:16:45 | 0:16:48
Yes, definitely, I think
everybody should be. | 0:16:48 | 0:16:52
Parking fine private details
were also published. | 0:16:52 | 0:16:55
Islington Council said
in a statement: | 0:16:55 | 0:16:58
But some campaigners say
they have not gone far enough. | 0:17:07 | 0:17:11
We have seen people's personal dates
of birth, sexual orientation, | 0:17:11 | 0:17:15
and housing situation
released to the public. | 0:17:15 | 0:17:18
We have seen the names and addresses
of witness statements, released | 0:17:18 | 0:17:23
to the perpetrators
of anti-social behaviour. | 0:17:23 | 0:17:25
Time and time again, we have seen | 0:17:25 | 0:17:30
incompetence from this council
regarding data protection. | 0:17:30 | 0:17:32
Legal experts say it's time
for all organisations in London | 0:17:32 | 0:17:35
to invest in secure systems ahead
of law changes in the New Year, | 0:17:35 | 0:17:39
where high security costs will be
small, compared to fines. | 0:17:39 | 0:17:44
The current maximum fine
is £500,000, that will go | 0:17:44 | 0:17:48
up to between 2% to 4% | 0:17:48 | 0:17:52
of an organisation's turnover,
or, ten to 20 million euros, | 0:17:52 | 0:17:54
whichever is higher. | 0:17:54 | 0:17:56
That's a huge increase in fines
for an organisation. | 0:17:56 | 0:18:00
For those trusting organisations
with their personal information, | 0:18:00 | 0:18:03
tighter rules and fines have
to be welcomed. | 0:18:03 | 0:18:06
But for those already facing
budget cuts, it's a cost | 0:18:06 | 0:18:09
they can be doing without,
and data security is not | 0:18:09 | 0:18:12
an exact science. | 0:18:12 | 0:18:22
The weather has also impacted on a
number of sports fixtures over the | 0:18:27 | 0:18:32
weekend, with one being replayed
right now. We are talking about | 0:18:32 | 0:18:38
Saracens. Yes, we are. A very
important match in the European | 0:18:38 | 0:18:43
Champions Cup, a pool game that was
going to be a repeat of last year's | 0:18:43 | 0:18:49
final, it was actually called off,
between Saracens and Claremont or | 0:18:49 | 0:18:56
van. There is actually an artificial
pitch in Barnet, but it was all of | 0:18:56 | 0:19:02
the snow around the ground that was
causing the problems. They did | 0:19:02 | 0:19:07
decide they would be playing it
right now. It kicked off at 5:30pm, | 0:19:07 | 0:19:12
and at half-time, Clermont Auvergne
were ahead. A penalty try for | 0:19:12 | 0:19:24
Saracens, and you can keep across
that match right now. We should also | 0:19:24 | 0:19:30
add that regardless of what happens
in that match, the French club | 0:19:30 | 0:19:35
Clermont Auvergne was very upset
with how it was rearranged, and they | 0:19:35 | 0:19:40
accuse the tournament organisers of
incompetence. Luckily for football | 0:19:40 | 0:19:45
fans, the weather would never have
affected the Champions League draw, | 0:19:45 | 0:19:49
would it? No, it was inside, but
still plenty of drama. Two London | 0:19:49 | 0:19:55
clubs in the mix. There were
actually five English clubs in that | 0:19:55 | 0:20:00
last 16 draw, a record for any
country at this stage. Let's see how | 0:20:00 | 0:20:06
Tottenham and Chelsea got on.
Tottenham will be taking on Juventus | 0:20:06 | 0:20:10
with the first leg away in Italy,
which is a tough draw because | 0:20:10 | 0:20:15
Juventus were the Champions League
runners-up next season. -- last | 0:20:15 | 0:20:22
season. Chelsea and Barcelona have a
very rich rivalry in the | 0:20:22 | 0:20:28
competition, last meeting in 2012,
when the blues went on to lift the | 0:20:28 | 0:20:32
trophy. A lot to fit in there.
Thanks for the update! | 0:20:32 | 0:20:40
Whilst Winston Churchill is best
remembered for leading | 0:20:40 | 0:20:42
Britain through the Second World War
and his rousing speeches - | 0:20:42 | 0:20:45
he was also known for his cigars
and sartorial style. | 0:20:45 | 0:20:47
Well, his tailors on Saville Row
still make the suit | 0:20:47 | 0:20:50
they call "The Churchill". | 0:20:50 | 0:20:51
Wendy Hurrell went to find out more
ahead of a new film about Britain's | 0:20:51 | 0:20:54
most famous Prime Minister. | 0:20:54 | 0:20:57
When one has a country to run,
one must be suitably attired... | 0:20:57 | 0:21:00
in a suit made by the best. | 0:21:00 | 0:21:08
For more than 200 years,
Henry Poole and Co have | 0:21:08 | 0:21:11
been crafting clothes
for the most esteemed gentleman. | 0:21:11 | 0:21:16
NEWSREEL: While Mrs Smith relaxed
at the pictures and her husband | 0:21:16 | 0:21:19
at the football match,
Winston Churchill went to the zoo. | 0:21:19 | 0:21:21
Including for Winston Churchill. | 0:21:21 | 0:21:23
He came to us in 1906. | 0:21:23 | 0:21:27
NEWSREEL: While Mrs Smith relaxed
at the pictures and her husband | 0:21:27 | 0:21:32
He came to us in 1906. | 0:21:32 | 0:21:34
A rather young man, a 19-year-old,
and with a rather slim build | 0:21:34 | 0:21:37
with a little large head. | 0:21:37 | 0:21:38
So much so - yes -
so much so that we actually | 0:21:38 | 0:21:41
made his shoulders bigger. | 0:21:41 | 0:21:42
A prolific customer,
pages and pages on him. | 0:21:42 | 0:21:46
"The Churchill" is a suit
they still make today | 0:21:46 | 0:21:48
from their workroom beneath the shop
at 15, Savile Row. | 0:21:48 | 0:21:51
Your Majesty... | 0:21:51 | 0:21:53
Mr Churchill. | 0:21:53 | 0:21:54
So when you're making a film
about our former Prime Minister, | 0:21:54 | 0:21:57
naturally you'd send your leading
actors to be fitted here. | 0:21:57 | 0:22:00
Gary Oldman plays Churchill
in The Darkest Hour. | 0:22:00 | 0:22:08
We were waiting to see Gary,
just to make sure everything was OK | 0:22:08 | 0:22:11
and all of a sudden a voice
behind me said, "Hello, Mr Parker." | 0:22:11 | 0:22:14
I turned around and he had
the prosthetics on, and of course it | 0:22:14 | 0:22:17
wasn't Gary Oldman at
all, it was Churchill, | 0:22:17 | 0:22:20
which was an exciting moment! | 0:22:20 | 0:22:24
The thread stitching the real
Churchill in the early 1900s | 0:22:24 | 0:22:28
to Oldman's portrayal of him now,
is this taylor, considered | 0:22:28 | 0:22:31
the founder of Savile Row. | 0:22:31 | 0:22:38
Well, Gary Oldman's performance
as Churchill has already | 0:22:38 | 0:22:40
been nominated for a Golden Globe
award, and there's Oscar talk too. | 0:22:40 | 0:22:43
And, a little earlier, Wendy caught
up with him at the premiere | 0:22:43 | 0:22:46
in Leicester Square. | 0:22:46 | 0:22:52
I've spent the morning making a
little film about the tailor who | 0:22:52 | 0:22:56
made your suit for the film. I just
wonder how it felt to step into a | 0:22:56 | 0:23:01
suit that was made by the same
tailors on Savile Row that used to | 0:23:01 | 0:23:06
make Winston Churchill's suits. This
is the great thing about the costume | 0:23:06 | 0:23:12
designer, Jackie Duran. She goes
above and beyond, and goes to the | 0:23:12 | 0:23:20
original source, so you get the same
cloth, the same material. I've just | 0:23:20 | 0:23:27
seen him, actually and said hello.
Philip Parker just walked past. You | 0:23:27 | 0:23:32
gave him a bit of a shock when you
turned up one day in full make-up | 0:23:32 | 0:23:37
and prosthetics to say hello. The
trouble is that sometimes you get to | 0:23:37 | 0:23:43
keep the clothes after you've
finished, but none of them fit me, | 0:23:43 | 0:23:49
so they are made for a much bigger
man, unfortunately. Are you allowed | 0:23:49 | 0:23:53
to keep the fat suit as well?
Exactly, I'd have to wear that as | 0:23:53 | 0:23:59
well. No more fat suits. You were
quite reticent to play the role. Why | 0:23:59 | 0:24:04
was that? I just think he's an
iconic figure, sort of mythologised, | 0:24:04 | 0:24:16
and you wonder whether you could
reach beyond that, get beyond that | 0:24:16 | 0:24:21
and find the man. And the fact that
you're stepping, not only into | 0:24:21 | 0:24:26
Churchill's shoes, but Robert Hardy,
Albert Finney, John Lithgow, Michael | 0:24:26 | 0:24:35
Gambon, all the people that have
played him before. You've obviously | 0:24:35 | 0:24:41
done a good job. Congratulations on
your Golden Globe nomination. Thank | 0:24:41 | 0:24:45
you. First one. Enjoy your evening! | 0:24:45 | 0:24:50
After a white weekend for many,
let's see what this week's weather | 0:24:50 | 0:24:53
has got in store. | 0:24:53 | 0:24:54
Philip Avery is here. | 0:24:54 | 0:24:58
You always deliver! | 0:24:58 | 0:25:02
A little bit snowy. Some of our
weather watchers have been out and | 0:25:05 | 0:25:11
about. Not everybody has seen this,
but as the day has gone on, we've | 0:25:11 | 0:25:16
gone towards something a bit more
water three than wintry. A bit of | 0:25:16 | 0:25:22
flash in the far south-east due to a
weather system that brought a bit of | 0:25:22 | 0:25:28
sleet and snow. The winds will ease
across the south eastern quarter | 0:25:28 | 0:25:33
overnight. Out west, this is the
real story. Forget all the rest if | 0:25:33 | 0:25:39
you have to. -11 or so. It could be
that cold, the coldest night of the | 0:25:39 | 0:25:45
so far. To come, I suspect, a very
cold start. But, by complete | 0:25:45 | 0:25:52
contrast for many of you, it will be
a sunny day, which tends to lift the | 0:25:52 | 0:25:58
spirits. A really chilly start if
you are standing at the platforms or | 0:25:58 | 0:26:04
standing at the bus stop. You will
need a lot of layers, despite the | 0:26:04 | 0:26:08
presence of quite a bit of sunshine.
For the most part, quite a dry day, | 0:26:08 | 0:26:13
with the best of the sunshine doing
nothing at all for the temperatures. | 0:26:13 | 0:26:19
Things cloud over | 0:26:19 | 0:26:30
tomorrow night. Tomorrow night will
not be nearly as cold. A weather | 0:26:35 | 0:26:37
front from the west bringing in some
cloud and rain. Relatively speaking, | 0:26:37 | 0:26:39
the wind coming from the west is a
milder direction. Thereafter, a lot | 0:26:39 | 0:26:42
of isobars, so wind quite a factor,
but it's not until we get to the | 0:26:42 | 0:26:47
latter part of the week that the
isobars begin to crank back towards | 0:26:47 | 0:26:53
the north. Having had mild air at
midweek, it gets colder towards the | 0:26:53 | 0:26:58
end of the week.
Thank you. | 0:26:58 | 0:27:03
The main headlines: | 0:27:03 | 0:27:04

From all of us on the team -
