inspired by so-called Islamic State.

That

0:00:000:00:06

Good evening.

0:00:060:00:07

Coming up on BBC London news:

0:00:070:00:09

A mother whose sick daughter

could be placed in foster care

0:00:090:00:11

following a row with doctors

at Kings College Hospital

0:00:110:00:14

over her treatment.

0:00:140:00:15

All I've got at heart

is her best interests,

0:00:150:00:17

and for them to take her away

from me is going to kill her.

0:00:170:00:20

It will kill her.

0:00:200:00:21

She can't cope without us.

0:00:210:00:29

But the authorities say the mother's

intervention could be further

0:00:290:00:31

harming 11-year-old Melody.

0:00:310:00:32

Also tonight: A 17-year-old admits

0:00:320:00:42

Also tonight: A 17-year-old

admits to carrying out

0:00:430:00:47

a spate of acid attacks.

0:00:470:00:48

Plus, we meet the 67-year-old who

battled blood cancer

0:00:480:00:50

for years without success

and claims taking turmeric

0:00:500:00:52

helped her fight the disease.

0:00:520:00:53

And decades of history under threat

as London's historic India Club

0:00:530:00:56

faces closure.

0:00:560:01:05

A very warm welcome to the programme

with me, Riz Lateef.

0:01:050:01:09

The mother of an 11-year-old girl

who has a life-limiting illness has

0:01:090:01:14

been warned that her daughter may be

taken into foster care if she fails

0:01:140:01:18

to co-operate with doctors

at Kings College Hospital.

0:01:180:01:21

Melody Driscoll has a rare genetic

disorder that causes

0:01:210:01:26

mental and physical disability.

0:01:260:01:28

Croydon Council says it's

taking the legal action

0:01:280:01:30

on the advice of the hospital,

which claims Melody's parents

0:01:300:01:32

are "obstructing her care".

0:01:330:01:38

But they claim they are acting in

her best interests.

0:01:380:01:40

Marc Ashdown reports.

0:01:400:01:42

# You just hold me...

0:01:420:01:43

It's fair to say she's up

there amongst his biggest fans.

0:01:430:01:46

So when Melody Driscoll

received a surprise visit

0:01:460:01:48

from Ed Sheeran last year,

it was a dream come true.

0:01:480:01:51

But Melody's day-to-day

life is very different.

0:01:510:01:58

SHE CRIES.

0:01:580:01:59

Her mother says these bouts

of intense pain happen daily and can

0:01:590:02:02

last up to two hours at a time.

0:02:020:02:06

In the past, Melody has been

administered strong painkillers,

0:02:060:02:10

but King's College Hospital

is trying to wean her off them,

0:02:100:02:12

against her parents' wishes.

0:02:120:02:15

She starts attacking herself.

0:02:150:02:17

She can't keep her body

still on the bed, she starts trying

0:02:170:02:20

to throw herself off.

0:02:200:02:23

She tries to rip out every line

possible and she looks at you...

0:02:230:02:26

Sorry, she looks at you with these

eyes that say "Help me".

0:02:260:02:29

And there's nothing I can do,

because they won't let me help her.

0:02:290:02:32

We filmed in happier times last

year, when Melody was living

0:02:320:02:35

at home with her family.

0:02:350:02:39

She suffers from a range

of complex medical conditions,

0:02:390:02:41

and could die at any point.

0:02:410:02:45

It was decided four years ago

at Great Ormond Street

0:02:450:02:48

that it was about her quality

of life rather than quantity of life

0:02:480:02:52

because if we didn't

control her pain and her symptoms,

0:02:520:02:54

she was stuck in hospital

and she wouldn't have no life

0:02:540:02:57

and she was always in pain.

0:02:570:02:58

So by giving her these medications,

it got her home, she was happy

0:02:580:03:01

and she was going to school.

0:03:010:03:03

But in July, she fell ill and has

been in hospital ever since.

0:03:030:03:06

The dispute over her

care has escalated.

0:03:060:03:07

Croydon Council has now intervened.

0:03:070:03:09

They wrote to Mrs Driscoll saying:

0:03:090:03:14

We are concerned about your ability

to care for your child, citing her

0:03:140:03:19

refusal to allow medical

professionals to treat Melody by

0:03:190:03:22

obstructing and refusing to

co-operate with her medical plan.

0:03:220:03:26

Consultants have advised of the

harmful risks that continued use of

0:03:260:03:30

morphine could cause to Melody's

liver, which could eventually lead

0:03:300:03:33

to her death. They say are they are

concerned that if she were sent

0:03:330:03:37

home, Mrs Driscoll would not appear

to the advice of medical

0:03:370:03:40

professionals and Melody could be at

risk of suffering significant harm

0:03:400:03:44

in her care. There are now. The

letter states that the plan is to

0:03:440:03:53

place Melody in foster care.

0:03:530:03:54

Croydon told us these types

0:03:540:03:56

of cases are difficult

where there are complex health

0:03:560:03:58

and care needs and differing

0:03:580:03:59

medical opinions.

0:03:590:04:00

They say they always seek

to work with the family.

0:04:000:04:02

The trust which runs

King's College Hospital said

0:04:020:04:04

all the decisions taken

by their expert medical

0:04:040:04:06

team are done so in

the patient's best interest.

0:04:060:04:08

Karina is fighting on.

0:04:080:04:09

She's hired the solicitors

who represented Charlie Gard's

0:04:090:04:11

parents, who had a well-publicised

battle with doctors at Great Ormond

0:04:110:04:14

Street over his treatment.

0:04:140:04:15

These are medical experts.

0:04:150:04:16

Do they not know best?

0:04:160:04:19

If you have got something that

actually is working,

0:04:190:04:21

why take that away from her?

0:04:210:04:23

They say they are doing it

to give her quantity of life.

0:04:230:04:26

But is it fair to have a quantity

of life full of pain?

0:04:260:04:35

Coming up later in the programme:

0:04:350:04:41

New powers to prevent unsafe laser

pens from coming into the country -

0:04:410:04:44

and being used recklessly

against pilots and drivers.

0:04:440:04:51

A 17-year-old boy has admitted

carrying out a series of acid

0:04:510:04:55

attacks against moped riders.

0:04:550:05:00

On 13th July last

year, the teenager -

0:05:000:05:02

who cannot be named because of his

age - targeted six riders

0:05:020:05:05

in one night to try

and steal their vehicles.

0:05:050:05:07

Chris Rogers is at the scene

of the first attack in Hackney.

0:05:070:05:13

It was 10.25 on the evening of July

the 13th last year when a man was

0:05:130:05:17

found screaming in agony on the road

just behind me. He had had acid

0:05:170:05:21

thrown in his face. His moped had

been stolen and within minutes, 20

0:05:210:05:26

fellow careers from the same company

arrived at the scene. They had

0:05:260:05:30

already warned police they feared an

attack like this would happen. They

0:05:300:05:33

had heard his attack on their

communication system. Over the next

0:05:330:05:38

90 minutes, another five couriers

were attacked with acid in an

0:05:380:05:41

attempt to steal their bikes. The

17-year-old responsible for those

0:05:410:05:44

attacks pleaded guilty at the start

of his trial today. He has been

0:05:440:05:48

named as Derek John, from Croydon.

The judge lifted the reporting ban

0:05:480:05:52

on identifying him, saying there is

a huge public interest in knowing

0:05:520:05:59

who was responsible for these

horrific attacks, which left one

0:05:590:06:01

courier with life-changing facial

injury. The boy's mother left court

0:06:010:06:08

crying today. It comes after the

government announced new measures to

0:06:080:06:11

try and stop the spate of acid

attacks in London and across the

0:06:110:06:14

country with a voluntary code of

practice for retailers banning under

0:06:140:06:19

18s from buying corrosive liquids.

In the last 24 hours, victims and

0:06:190:06:23

their families have taken to social

media, saying the measures don't go

0:06:230:06:27

far enough.

Chris, thank you.

0:06:270:06:32

An academic who was viciously

beaten in his home in Wimbledon

0:06:320:06:35

by burglars believes he would be

dead if it wasn't for

0:06:350:06:38

his local police station.

0:06:380:06:39

That's why Paul Kohler is now

planning to take Mayor Sadiq Khan

0:06:390:06:42

to court over plans to close

local police stations.

0:06:420:06:44

Karl Mercer has been

speaking to him.

0:06:440:06:48

This was Paul Kohler more

than three years ago,

0:06:480:06:52

severely beaten after an attack

at his home.

0:06:520:06:55

This is him today, the bruises gone,

but not the memories of the night

0:06:550:06:59

four men burst into his home.

0:06:590:07:00

My wife and I were in

the back of the house.

0:07:000:07:03

There was a knock at the door,

I opened the door and four guys

0:07:030:07:06

rushed in and started beating me.

0:07:060:07:08

Something out of a gangster movie.

0:07:080:07:09

As the police rushed through

the door, he was about to bring

0:07:090:07:12

a heavy wooden door down on my head,

so we were seconds

0:07:120:07:15

away from oblivion.

0:07:150:07:16

The local police station is just

a couple of hundred yards away

0:07:160:07:19

from Mr Kohler's home in Wimbledon.

0:07:190:07:20

It was officers from here who burst

through his door to save him.

0:07:200:07:25

But this station, like others

in the capital, is set to close

0:07:250:07:28

under City Hall plans.

0:07:280:07:29

Mr Kohler is threatening a judicial

review of that decision.

0:07:290:07:33

I also feel a huge warmth

to the police for saving me,

0:07:330:07:36

so I want to stand up for them.

0:07:360:07:38

They are enduring these cuts

and I want to say on their behalf,

0:07:380:07:41

this has gone too far.

0:07:410:07:42

And police keep

telling me, carry on.

0:07:420:07:44

You're doing the right thing.

0:07:440:07:45

So to an extent, I'm

speaking on behalf of them,

0:07:450:07:48

because they can't speak.

0:07:480:07:50

Wimbledon is one of 37 police

stations the Mayor plans

0:07:500:07:53

to close over coming years,

but he says he's been left no choice

0:07:530:07:56

due to Government cuts,

which means the Met will have

0:07:560:07:58

to save more than £400 million

over the coming years.

0:07:580:08:04

Back in 2008, there were 149 police

front counters around London.

0:08:040:08:09

Boris Johnson shut more than half,

meaning there are 73

0:08:090:08:12

currently left open,

but 37 of those are listed

0:08:120:08:14

for closure, dotted

all around the capital

0:08:140:08:16

following a public consultation.

0:08:160:08:20

We see an enormous number

of public consultations.

0:08:200:08:22

They vary from the brilliant

to the abysmal.

0:08:220:08:24

Sadly, this was one

of the abysmal ones.

0:08:240:08:29

It really was bad.

0:08:300:08:32

City Hall insists every borough

will have a police station and fast

0:08:320:08:36

response times will not be affected

by the current plans.

0:08:360:08:44

The Grenfell Tower inquiry

has ended its contract

0:08:440:08:46

with the auditors, KPMG,

after campaigners claimed the

0:08:460:08:49

company had a conflict of interest.

0:08:490:08:50

More than 70 people had written

to the Prime Mminister to complain

0:08:500:08:53

that the firm had worked

for Kensington and Chelsea Council

0:08:530:08:56

and for companies involved

in the refurbishment of the tower

0:08:560:08:58

before it was destroyed

by a fire last year.

0:08:580:09:05

The supermarket chain Lidl

is to open five new London stores

0:09:050:09:07

and build its largest warehouse

to date in Luton.

0:09:070:09:09

The German-owned chain says it'll

create up to 1,000 new jobs

0:09:090:09:12

and underlines the scale

of its expansions

0:09:120:09:14

plans in the capital.

0:09:140:09:21

The Cabinet reshuffle

is still under way,

0:09:210:09:23

taking longer than expected,

but with the final pieces

0:09:230:09:25

being put in place.

0:09:250:09:28

It looks as if Justine Greening -

MP for Putney -

0:09:280:09:31

is moving from Education.

0:09:310:09:33

She's in Number 10 now.

0:09:330:09:36

Our political editor Tim Donovan

is at Westminster with the latest.

0:09:360:09:42

As we have been hearing, this is

turning out to be what is regarded

0:09:420:09:48

as a fairly limited, some would say

cautious reshuffle, all with the

0:09:480:09:54

emphasis on reappointment. But

Justine Greening has been, as you

0:09:540:09:58

say, in Downing Street. She arrived

about an hour ago and there has been

0:09:580:10:02

speculation over the weekend and

this morning that she would be moved

0:10:020:10:05

from the post of education. An hour

ago, David Gauke, the existing Work

0:10:050:10:11

and Pensions Secretary, was moved to

justice and there has been

0:10:110:10:17

speculation that Justine Greening

has maybe been offered that move.

0:10:170:10:21

But there has been talk of Justine

Greening, a nonselective

0:10:210:10:27

comprehensive school educated

politician who has been less than

0:10:270:10:36

keen to promote the grammar school

policy. She has perhaps not

0:10:360:10:40

displayed the requisite enthusiasm

for free schools, which is where the

0:10:400:10:45

speculation about her future at

education has arisen. She is a

0:10:450:10:49

former International Development

Secretary and did a stint as

0:10:490:10:53

Transport Secretary as well,

something she couldn't carry on with

0:10:530:10:55

because she was opposed to the

expansion of Heathrow, which is now

0:10:550:11:00

government policy. Talking of which,

Chris Grayling, someone who does

0:11:000:11:03

support the expansion of Heathrow

very much, and we believe after the

0:11:030:11:09

early speculation that he might have

been taking on the chairmanship of

0:11:090:11:12

the party. It was wrongly tweeted

out by Conservative HQ. That hasn't

0:11:120:11:17

emerged. It looks as if he may stay

in his position as Transport

0:11:170:11:21

Secretary. That for one will not be

welcomed by the Mayor of London, who

0:11:210:11:25

has clashed with Chris Grayling

repeatedly on the issue of

0:11:250:11:30

outsourcing, taking over the

franchise of overground rail routes

0:11:300:11:33

and Southern and so on more although

there is some speculation that he

0:11:330:11:38

could be offered the work and

pensions brief, which is a portfolio

0:11:380:11:42

he shadowed once before. We are

still waiting.

As you say, a lot of

0:11:420:11:48

speculation. While we wait, there

are a lot of new faces running

0:11:480:11:53

things at Conservative HQ?

Yeah, and

for those who study these things,

0:11:530:11:57

very much a freshened up look at

Conservative HQ with people like

0:11:570:12:02

James Cleverly. These are young

politicians who have only just been

0:12:020:12:12

elected. Kemi was elected this year.

James Cleverly in 2015. Both are

0:12:120:12:21

former London assembly members. The

London Assembly at City Hall is

0:12:210:12:24

turning out to be a finishing school

for some of these politicians.

Tim,

0:12:240:12:29

thank you.

0:12:290:12:30

New powers to tackle the sale

of unsafe laser pens,

0:12:300:12:37

which can cause blindness, have been

announced by the Government.

0:12:370:12:41

It comes after an increase

in incidents targeting

0:12:410:12:44

train drivers and pilots -

particularly at Heathrow Airport,

0:12:440:12:46

which has seen

the highest rate in the UK.

0:12:460:12:48

Here's our transport

correspondent Tom Edwards.

0:12:480:12:50

The dangerous misuse of lasers

has been increasing.

0:12:500:12:52

They're cheap and easily available

and many are unaware of the dangers.

0:12:520:12:55

Angela Marshall is

from Hertfordshire.

0:12:550:12:58

She wants to raise awareness

after her son damaged his eye

0:12:580:13:00

after looking into a laser he bought

at a school fair.

0:13:000:13:08

I shone it in my eye to see

what it looked like,

0:13:080:13:11

and then suddenly I just

saw this blur.

0:13:110:13:13

It was quite weird.

0:13:130:13:16

I thought it would go

away, so I left it.

0:13:160:13:18

But eventually, it started

knocking out my reading.

0:13:180:13:20

It was just a spot.

0:13:200:13:26

Lasers are an issue.

0:13:260:13:27

They are a weapon used by people.

0:13:270:13:29

People don't realise how

dangerous lasers are,

0:13:290:13:31

and it's down to a lot of people not

understanding the full impact

0:13:310:13:34

of laser and its technology.

0:13:340:13:35

Transport has often been

a target for lasers.

0:13:350:13:37

Two years ago, this plane was forced

to return to Heathrow after one

0:13:370:13:40

of the pilots was hit by a laser

shortly after take-off.

0:13:400:13:50

Since 2013, there have been

150 incidents

0:13:520:13:53

of eye injuries from lasers,

most of them children.

0:13:530:13:59

There were nearly 1,300 incidents

at airports in 2016.

0:13:590:14:05

Heathrow is the worst affected.

0:14:050:14:06

On the rail network, there have been

578 incidents over recent years.

0:14:060:14:09

The Government is now bringing

in new measures to stop high-powered

0:14:090:14:12

lasers getting into the UK.

0:14:120:14:22

A lot of these products

are imported from abroad,

0:14:220:14:24

so we're stepping up checks

at our borders and our ports

0:14:240:14:26

and providing more resources

and more training for officials

0:14:260:14:28

there so that they can spot

these items coming in.

0:14:280:14:34

The other thing we're doing

is to make sure they're properly

0:14:340:14:36

labelled so that if it's

a high-powered laser,

0:14:360:14:38

it has to have proper labelling

and it has to have warnings

0:14:380:14:41

and safety notices on it.

0:14:410:14:44

Johnny's eye has improved.

0:14:440:14:45

He was lucky.

0:14:450:14:47

His mum now wants the Government

to license all lasers.

0:14:470:14:52

They do need to look at the

lower-powered lasers as well

0:14:520:14:55

and make a difference there.

0:14:550:14:56

Our view is that all lasers

should be licensed.

0:14:560:14:58

New laws already mean

tougher sentences for those

0:14:580:15:02

who misuse lasers.

0:15:020:15:03

Further changes, it's hoped,

will make it much harder to get hold

0:15:030:15:06

of the high-powered lasers

themselves.

0:15:060:15:16

Commuters faced the first of three

days of disruption this week as

0:15:190:15:22

members of the RMT union began a

fresh wave of strikes. Today the

0:15:220:15:26

dispute over the role of Caltech

passengers on Southern and South

0:15:260:15:29

West Trains, with those travelling

into and out of Waterloo facing

0:15:290:15:32

further disruption on Wednesday and

Friday. Let's get more from Paul

0:15:320:15:36

Clifton, who is at Waterloo now. How

are things looking this evening?

0:15:360:15:41

There are strikes on three train

operators in the London area today

0:15:410:15:45

and later this week. On

south-western, as you can see, it's

0:15:450:15:49

pretty busy, but that is normal. On

Southern Railway, it is the 39th

0:15:490:15:55

straight day spread over 20 months.

There is also strike action on

0:15:550:15:59

Greater Anglia into Liverpool

Street. It is the biggest week of

0:15:590:16:03

industrial action on the railway in

decades, and yet a majority of

0:16:030:16:06

services have been running more or

less as normal. On Southern, nine

0:16:060:16:11

out of ten trains than today. On

south-western, seven out of ten

0:16:110:16:18

services have been running. Both

Southern and south-western say some

0:16:180:16:21

guards who have stopped work on

previous strike days have turned up

0:16:210:16:24

today. The union says it has been

rock solid. They can't both be

0:16:240:16:28

right.

Indeed. As you mentioned, a

big week of walk-outs. How much

0:16:280:16:35

longer can this go on?

This could

run for many months yet. The RMT is

0:16:350:16:44

demanding a guarantee never to

change the role of the guard, and

0:16:440:16:48

that is something to which the

railway cannot agree if it is to run

0:16:480:16:51

new trains the way they have been

designed and built. Politically, the

0:16:510:16:56

government will never give in to the

union's wishes. And likewise, the

0:16:560:17:00

RMT union can't afford to back down

on what it has always said is an

0:17:000:17:06

argument about safety. It is risking

its entire reputation on making this

0:17:060:17:10

long-running dispute work.

Paul,

from Waterloo, thank you.

0:17:100:17:17

Still to come this Monday evening...

0:17:170:17:24

This intriguing little doorway leads

up to a place an changed since the

0:17:240:17:29

1950s. But the future of the India

club is under threat.

0:17:290:17:36

Before that though: can

this spice, turmeric -

0:17:360:17:38

help cancer patients

fight the disease?

0:17:380:17:44

Well, the bold claim comes

from a 67-year-old woman,

0:17:440:17:46

who after three rounds

of chemotherapy for terminal cancer

0:17:460:17:49

without success, thought she had

nothing to lose by taking curcumin -

0:17:490:17:52

a component of turmeric.

0:17:520:17:55

The result has been remarkable -

so much so it's inspiring scientists

0:17:550:17:58

in the capital to find out more.

0:17:580:17:59

Sarah Harris has the story.

0:17:590:18:04

It was an internet search which led

to a discovery Dieneke

0:18:040:18:07

believes saved her life.

0:18:070:18:08

She had already had three rounds

of chemotherapy and four

0:18:080:18:11

stem cell transplants to put

a stop to her cancer.

0:18:110:18:15

In the end, it was a treatment using

curcumin found in a common spice

0:18:150:18:18

which she believes turned the tide.

0:18:180:18:22

It was soon after she started taking

the tablets that her white cell

0:18:220:18:25

count indicating the cancer started

to go down.

0:18:250:18:30

I had to go for regular blood

tests and for two months,

0:18:300:18:33

and it was very quick

that they weren't going up, and of

0:18:330:18:36

course they were supposed to go up.

0:18:360:18:39

If you don't have any

chemo that goes up.

0:18:390:18:44

It didn't occur to me

really to think about I'm

0:18:440:18:46

going to die, because you can't.

0:18:460:18:47

You just don't know.

0:18:470:18:49

I think with anything you don't

know when it's finished.

0:18:490:18:54

The health turnaround

has already featured

0:18:540:18:55

in the British Medical Journal,

and now scientists in the labs

0:18:550:18:59

at Westminster University are trying

to get to the bottom of how a powder

0:18:590:19:03

found in many of our kitchen

cupboards really works.

0:19:030:19:08

There are positive

results so far, yes.

0:19:080:19:12

We are seeing reduced inflammation

in cartilage cells grown in vitro

0:19:120:19:15

or in a petri dish and we are seeing

reduced proliferation of cancer

0:19:150:19:19

cells also in vitro.

0:19:190:19:24

But it is a big step between that

and seeing in a human clinical

0:19:240:19:28

effect which is what we're trialling

at the moment.

0:19:280:19:30

In Indian restaurants,

turmeric is used pretty liberally

0:19:300:19:32

here in its raw state.

0:19:320:19:35

It just smells pretty

pungent, but a recent study

0:19:350:19:37

at University College London showed

that even small amounts of this

0:19:370:19:41

used in cooking can have

anti-inflammatory effects.

0:19:410:19:47

Doctors say there is no alternative

explanation for her recovery.

0:19:470:19:50

Dieneke knows the curcumin

is keeping her cancer at bay,

0:19:500:19:54

and will keep taking it every day

for the rest of the life her family

0:19:540:19:58

thought she may never have.

0:19:580:20:05

Now tonight sees a first for

a competitive football game here.

0:20:050:20:09

Because the referee

in Crystal Palace's match

0:20:090:20:12

at Brighton in the third-round

of the FA Cup will not be alone.

0:20:120:20:15

For the first time, if required,

he'll be able to use

0:20:150:20:18

a Video Assistant Referee.

0:20:180:20:19

I spoke our sports correspondent

Richard Conway a little earlier

0:20:190:20:23

and asked him how it would work.

0:20:230:20:28

Well, video assistant refereeing,

the system, has been under

0:20:280:20:30

development for 18 months.

0:20:300:20:32

It has been a global experiment

to get it ready for competitive use.

0:20:320:20:35

A decision will be made on its full

authorisation in the coming weeks.

0:20:350:20:40

What we will see here this evening

as part of that wider experiment.

0:20:400:20:44

It can only be used in four

specific situations.

0:20:440:20:47

That is to determine

whether a goal should stand,

0:20:470:20:51

to determine whether a penalty

should be awarded, for a straight

0:20:510:20:55

red card and also to clear up any

confusion over mistaken identity

0:20:550:20:58

when the referee is trying

to punish a specific player.

0:20:580:21:02

So the referee can refer or ask

for a video assistant referee

0:21:020:21:07

who is located in Uxbridge

near Heathrow airport,

0:21:070:21:14

to look at the incident on replays,

look at various different angles,

0:21:140:21:18

and then make a decision there.

0:21:180:21:21

The ultimate decision will rest

with the referee on the pitch.

0:21:210:21:25

It will ultimately be his call

about whether to seek guidance

0:21:250:21:28

and whether to take that guidance

in the end.

0:21:280:21:31

If he wants, he can also come

to the side of the pitch

0:21:310:21:34

and view a monitor here, to look

at a replay for himself, if that

0:21:340:21:37

aids him in making a decision.

0:21:370:21:43

Now, for more than half a century

The India Club on the Strand

0:21:430:21:47

has been like a slice

of the sub-continent

0:21:470:21:48

in the heart of the capital.

0:21:480:21:51

Set up in the 50's it became

a popular meeting place

0:21:510:21:53

for south Asian ex-pats.

0:21:530:22:00

But the historic site is now under

threat from developers

0:22:000:22:05

with campaigners turning

to English Heritage

0:22:050:22:06

for help save it.

0:22:060:22:07

Wendy Hurrell has the story.

0:22:070:22:11

Lunch service at the India club.

They have been dishing up authentic

0:22:110:22:14

south Asian food here since 1951.

The bar and canteen has barely

0:22:140:22:20

changed since. It has its loyal

customers. Will self has a table in

0:22:200:22:25

the corner.

It is more like a

genuine Indian restaurant in India.

0:22:250:22:29

But as what it reminded me off in

the 1980s. As the years have gone

0:22:290:22:36

by, and the world has grown faster

and shinier, the India Club

0:22:360:22:40

restaurant has remained exactly the

same.

Does not only the decor and

0:22:400:22:45

cuisine which has made this place of

important for the Indian community

0:22:450:22:50

in London.

You go to a place where

you don't know a soul and the only

0:22:500:22:54

place you hoped to meet somebody was

in the India Club.

It was set up by

0:22:540:23:00

the first High Commissioner to

England. And it was a place to

0:23:000:23:07

discuss politics and India's new

independence.

I don't think there is

0:23:070:23:12

another place in the whole United

Kingdom which has this particular

0:23:120:23:15

platform for both the community is

to not only eat wonderful food, but

0:23:150:23:21

also to discuss and debate issues of

the day.

That next year, the lease

0:23:210:23:26

runs out, and there is a planning

application to turn the building

0:23:260:23:30

into a hotel. The family running the

India Club are now reluctantly in

0:23:300:23:36

the spotlight as custodians of its

heritage.

Some people have told us

0:23:360:23:42

why can't you just move it to

another building, but it is really

0:23:420:23:45

the memories and events which are

soaked up in the walls of this place

0:23:450:23:49

which you cannot replicate. What we

have tried to do is get in touch

0:23:490:23:53

with Historic England to get the

place listed and get heritage

0:23:530:23:58

status.

The owner of the buildings

says no decision has been made to

0:23:580:24:02

redevelop it, exploring planning

permissions is one option and it is

0:24:020:24:09

working with Historic England to

establish the heritage of this

0:24:090:24:12

place. One that is little known to

the people passing by on the Strand.

0:24:120:24:19

Now, here with all the weather news

for us it's over to Matt Taylor.

0:24:190:24:24

You are always optimistic even

though it is freezing outside!

0:24:240:24:28

I try my best.

0:24:280:24:29

Seems like this are not ones you

want to see on a Monday. You can

0:24:340:24:41

hardly see the south-east underneath

that cloud on the satellite imagery.

0:24:410:24:47

There are some breaks in the near

continent and one or two of those

0:24:470:24:51

may head our way. It is certainly

very cloudy tonight. Quite misty

0:24:510:24:56

over the hills. Where you have got

that cloud, it does mean if you are

0:24:560:25:00

up early to driving into work you

will not be scraping much frost off

0:25:000:25:04

of the car. It will be frost free

but rather grey into your Tuesday

0:25:040:25:10

morning commute. It is slowly

brightening up a touch. There will

0:25:100:25:18

be one or two brighter breaks

potentially into the afternoon. It

0:25:180:25:23

will not feel quite as chilly.

Temperatures up to six or 7 degrees

0:25:230:25:27

through the second half of the day.

As were go into Tuesday night and

0:25:270:25:31

into Wednesday morning, there will

be a change on the way. It does mean

0:25:310:25:34

we have some wet weather to content

with. With the rain pass on its way

0:25:340:25:39

through, temperatures will not be as

low as they have been in recent

0:25:390:25:44

nights. Maybe the sublist morning

commute on Wednesday. Not for

0:25:440:25:51

everyone. Then skies will brighten.

Mostly dry on Wednesday with good

0:25:510:25:59

sunny spells and feeling pleasant.

As for Wednesday night into

0:25:590:26:04

Thursday, this area of low pressure

is taking wet and windy weather oft

0:26:040:26:12

is -- off to France and Spain. There

are not many isobars on the chart

0:26:120:26:17

are not much in the way of wind

around. Wednesday night and Thursday

0:26:170:26:22

night there could be some frost and

lingering fog. I am always

0:26:220:26:28

optimistic that there can be some

sunshine as well.

0:26:280:26:31

I know, and we love it! Let's recap

the main headlines.

0:26:310:26:37

A couple who met on an internet

dating website have been convicted

0:26:380:26:40

of planning a devastating Christmas

terror attack inspired

0:26:400:26:42

by the Islamic State group.

0:26:420:26:44

Munir Mohammed, stored bomb-making

components at his bedsit in Derby

0:26:440:26:46

with his pharmacist girlfriend

Rowaida El-Hassan.

0:26:460:26:49

The Prime Minister has been

carrying out a reshuffle

0:26:490:26:51

of her Cabinet, but so far

the changes appear limited.

0:26:510:26:55

The Immigration Minister,

Brandon Lewis has been named as

0:26:550:26:57

the new Conservative Party chairman.

0:26:570:27:03

That's it for now,

thanks for your company.

0:27:030:27:05

I'll be back with the latest

for you during the ten o'clock news.

0:27:050:27:08

From all of us on the team -

have a lovely evening.

0:27:080:27:11

Bye for now.
