Welcome to BBC London News.

I'm Sara Orchard.

A remembrance service has taken
place in New Addington this morning | 0:00:18 | 0:00:20
to pay tribute to those who died
in the Croydon Tram crash last year. | 0:00:20 | 0:00:26
The tram overturned speeding
on a tight corner at Sandilands | 0:00:26 | 0:00:28
killing seven people
and injuring 51. | 0:00:28 | 0:00:29
Marc Ashdown has more. | 0:00:30 | 0:00:36
One by one they laid flowers. To pay
tribute. To reflect. To support each | 0:00:36 | 0:00:43
other. And to remember their loved
ones. Seven Londoners who exactly | 0:00:43 | 0:00:48
one year ago boarded a tram and lost
their lives. There has not been a | 0:00:48 | 0:00:52
minute of any hour of any day in
this last year he has not been in | 0:00:52 | 0:00:57
our thoughts. One families suffering
shared by an entire community, every | 0:00:57 | 0:01:02
face here has a story. Bereaved
families, survivors and those who | 0:01:02 | 0:01:06
simply whether in this quiet corner
of London devastated by tragedy. I | 0:01:06 | 0:01:12
year may have passed but emotions
are still raw. Sometimes I cry and | 0:01:12 | 0:01:17
nobody knows how to feel. 23 days
before today I have had a of | 0:01:17 | 0:01:23
flashbacks. I had one this morning
like I was on the tram again. Since | 0:01:23 | 0:01:27
that they have not been on a tram.
On a cold and drizzly morning I saw | 0:01:27 | 0:01:31
some amazing people do some truly
courageous things. A difficult day | 0:01:31 | 0:01:39
for the emergency services who one
year ago battled in horrendous | 0:01:39 | 0:01:43
conditions trying to save lives.
Everyone was working so hard | 0:01:43 | 0:01:49
together. To do the best that we
could. For the people on the tram. | 0:01:49 | 0:01:55
And number of our staff are members
of this community, they have worked | 0:01:55 | 0:01:59
for the Ambulance Service for a
number of years and I think they | 0:01:59 | 0:02:02
have felt the impact of that as much
as the people directly involved. The | 0:02:02 | 0:02:09
plinth here and another to be
installed near the crash site is to | 0:02:09 | 0:02:12
be a permanent memorial inscribed
with the names of those who perished | 0:02:12 | 0:02:16
so they can be permanently
remembered. | 0:02:16 | 0:02:18
So one year after the tram crash,
how are the survivors coping? | 0:02:18 | 0:02:21
And what changes are being made
to the tram system to make it safer? | 0:02:21 | 0:02:24
Here's our transport
correspondent Tom Edwards | 0:02:24 | 0:02:29
I remember thinking to myself, he's
going a bit quick. Matthew still | 0:02:29 | 0:02:34
doesn't remember what happened in
the tram crash one year ago. He | 0:02:34 | 0:02:37
suffered a severe head injury and
it's been a tough 12 months. I still | 0:02:37 | 0:02:43
suffer from a bout of depression,
memory loss, I have trouble | 0:02:43 | 0:02:48
remembering things a lot and mood
swings, my wife said I have changed | 0:02:48 | 0:02:54
a lot in the last year. So it's been
difficult all round. He has not | 0:02:54 | 0:03:02
worked as an HGV driver since. He
was on board the tram when it | 0:03:02 | 0:03:07
overturned. A preliminary report
found it was travelling at 46 mph on | 0:03:07 | 0:03:12
the corner where the speed limit is
13. Unusually investigators have | 0:03:12 | 0:03:18
already made recommendations. The
report into this incident is close | 0:03:18 | 0:03:23
to completion. As yet we still don't
know why the driver was speeding on | 0:03:23 | 0:03:26
this very tight corner here. The
early indications from the | 0:03:26 | 0:03:33
investigators are that they will
recommend some kind of automatic | 0:03:33 | 0:03:38
mechanism to prevent speeding and
also a system that will be able to | 0:03:38 | 0:03:42
detect if the driver isn't paying
attention. Since the crash it has | 0:03:42 | 0:03:48
emerged a number of drivers had
fallen asleep at the controls. This | 0:03:48 | 0:03:54
equipment has now been stalled on
all trams, it uses infrared to | 0:03:54 | 0:03:58
protect the driver is falling
asleep. Warning signs and further | 0:03:58 | 0:04:03
speed restrictions are so now in
place on tight corners. Solicitors | 0:04:03 | 0:04:08
say they want any more
recommendations to be implemented | 0:04:08 | 0:04:10
quickly. I think the detail will be
important for them to understand | 0:04:10 | 0:04:16
exactly what happened and how it
happened and the next step is to | 0:04:16 | 0:04:19
make sure it never happens again.
The legacy from this has got to be | 0:04:19 | 0:04:23
that this does not happen again. I
have always said it's important that | 0:04:23 | 0:04:27
trams are treated more like trains
than they are like buses. It's a key | 0:04:27 | 0:04:33
feature and I hope those lessons
have been learned. So was the | 0:04:33 | 0:04:38
changes are already being made on
the London trams, for Matthew and | 0:04:38 | 0:04:41
many others it will take much longer
to get his life back. | 0:04:41 | 0:04:49
The Surrey coroner
says he will consider | 0:04:49 | 0:04:50
whether the inquests of the victims
of the Guildford Pub | 0:04:50 | 0:04:53
bombings should resume. | 0:04:53 | 0:04:54
Five people were killed
in the IRA blast in 1974. | 0:04:54 | 0:04:58
The sister of one of the four men
convicted and then later | 0:04:58 | 0:05:00
acquitted has called
for the inquests to re-start. | 0:05:00 | 0:05:02
The families of the victims are now
being consulted on their views. | 0:05:02 | 0:05:05
Hundreds of south London homes have
been without gas for five days | 0:05:05 | 0:05:08
after heating systems in four tower
blocks were turned off | 0:05:08 | 0:05:10
due to safety concerns. | 0:05:11 | 0:05:12
It is the third time in two years
residents have been affected | 0:05:12 | 0:05:14
by issues with the communal heating
in four blocks on the | 0:05:14 | 0:05:17
Grantham Road Estate. | 0:05:17 | 0:05:20
About 360 homes were cut off
after a potential leak was detected. | 0:05:20 | 0:05:23
Hyde Housing, who have provided
electric heaters, said | 0:05:23 | 0:05:26
it was "doing everything it can". | 0:05:26 | 0:05:31
The sport of karate
will make its Olympic | 0:05:31 | 0:05:33
debut at Tokyo 2020,
but the hopes of some | 0:05:33 | 0:05:35
of England's finest youngsters
was hanging in the balance. | 0:05:35 | 0:05:40
The team was left on the verge
of financial ruin, but their Olympic | 0:05:40 | 0:05:43
dreams appear to have been revived
after a London-based billionaire | 0:05:43 | 0:05:45
offered to pay off their debts. | 0:05:45 | 0:05:48
Chris Slegg reports. | 0:05:48 | 0:05:54
England under 21 karate team have
just returned from the World | 0:05:54 | 0:05:58
Championships in Tenerife with three
medals to their name. I was so happy | 0:05:58 | 0:06:02
because we have all worked so hard
and it's paid off. The mood is more | 0:06:02 | 0:06:07
upbeat than a few weeks ago when we
reported on their financial | 0:06:07 | 0:06:10
problems. They were preparing for
the biggest moment of the young | 0:06:10 | 0:06:16
sporting lives when Monarch airlines
collapsed leaving them among | 0:06:16 | 0:06:19
thousands of passengers out of
pocket. Financially it put us close | 0:06:19 | 0:06:24
to bankruptcy. Watching the report
at home was a cutie billionaire and | 0:06:24 | 0:06:27
former owner of Nottingham football
club. I saw it on TV and I felt the | 0:06:27 | 0:06:35
same when I used to play in the old
days, in my country, I know how they | 0:06:35 | 0:06:40
feel so I was talking to my friend
and I told him, can we do something | 0:06:40 | 0:06:51
to help them? So he offered to pay
off the team's debts of £40,000. | 0:06:51 | 0:06:58
Absolutely overwhelmed. Everybody is
overwhelmed, such a delightful | 0:06:58 | 0:07:02
gesture, such a wonderful gesture.
To offer to cover the cost. He | 0:07:02 | 0:07:09
stepped in, it is overwhelming that
he has decided to do this for us. I | 0:07:09 | 0:07:13
cannot thank that man enough, it
helped all of us because some of us | 0:07:13 | 0:07:16
were not able to make the trip
because of that happening and it | 0:07:16 | 0:07:20
caused a lot of stress for a lot of
our tweets. He has also said he will | 0:07:20 | 0:07:26
consider helping fund the team in
the run-up to Tokyo 2020. I will | 0:07:26 | 0:07:31
help them, if they need my help and
my support I will try to help them | 0:07:31 | 0:07:34
again. I love in general and I would
like to help and support them. The | 0:07:34 | 0:07:40
Olympic dream is still alive. | 0:07:40 | 0:07:42
Now lets get a check on the weather
with Elizabeth Rizzini. | 0:07:45 | 0:07:47
Lovely sunrise this morning for many
of us but that was all that was | 0:07:50 | 0:07:54
pretty, it was damp and cold, really
quite chilly earlier on this | 0:07:54 | 0:07:59
morning, all of the cloud cover as
well has stuck around for most of | 0:07:59 | 0:08:03
us, few outbreaks of drizzle as well
and there will be more drizzle I | 0:08:03 | 0:08:06
think many areas as we through to
the end of the day, drifting its way | 0:08:06 | 0:08:11
southwards, very few spots of rain
here and they are but most of us | 0:08:11 | 0:08:14
staying dry and it could brighten up
towards parts of Buckinghamshire, | 0:08:14 | 0:08:18
Berkshire and sorry. An awful lot of
cloud around, feeling quite chilly | 0:08:18 | 0:08:22
from any of us, top temperatures 11
or 12. Overnight tonight, clear | 0:08:22 | 0:08:29
skies or a time or two, temperatures
dropping away, then rising again | 0:08:29 | 0:08:33
into tomorrow morning, we will start
the day tomorrow on a milder note, | 0:08:33 | 0:08:39
more outbreaks of drizzle, grey and
dull start to the day but tomorrow a | 0:08:39 | 0:08:43
lot more cheery through the
afternoon, we should see some | 0:08:43 | 0:08:47
brightness and sunshine develop,
fairly brisk and chilly | 0:08:47 | 0:08:51
north-westerly wind but temperatures
up into double figures, 10-12d. Not | 0:08:51 | 0:08:57
looking too bad but if you're going
out on Friday night be aware we are | 0:08:57 | 0:09:01
likely to see some rain and it could
turn out to be quite heavy, that'll | 0:09:01 | 0:09:04
stick around and to Saturday, over
the weekend we are going to see a | 0:09:04 | 0:09:08
northerly wind develop, it should be
mostly dry after Saturday morning, | 0:09:08 | 0:09:14
lots of sunshine on Saturday but
feeling cold, highs of only 9 | 0:09:14 | 0:09:17
degrees. | 0:09:17 | 0:09:19
That's about it from me,
Riz Lateef will be here | 0:09:19 | 0:09:22
with our 6:30pm evening programme. | 0:09:22 | 0:09:23
But for now, from us all,
a very good afternoon. | 0:09:23 | 0:09:29 |
